INDIAN AND ISLAMIC ART – SOME HIGHLIGHTS

Indian & Islamic Art: 20th–29th October

East Asian Art: 27th October–5th November

This year Asian Art in London (AAL) celebrates its twenty-fifth year promoting the arts of Asia. Since its inaugural edition in 1998, AAL has grown into a two-week-long event involving more than forty participants. The accompanying programme has developed to include exhibitions, auctions and talks.

For the second year running the AAL will be structured into two distinct parts: the first week will focus on Islamic and Indian art with a launch evening on 20th October, followed by ten days dedicated to the arts of East Asia, with a launch on 27th October.

This year several galleries will be participating for the first time, including Alisan Fine Arts, a Hong Kong-based gallery specialising in contemporary Chinese art; David Thatcher Samurai Art; and Schoeni Projects – a platform for contemporary Chinese and Chinese diaspora art.

AAL supports emerging galleries and dealers but also strives to nurture new collectors, which is reflected in this year’s launch of a section on the AAL website devoted to more affordable works of art listed by participants, all priced under £5,000.

For full details and to download the comprehensive AAL guidebook with the events programme, maps, and lists of participants and affiliated institutions, please visit: asianartinlondon.com

SHOCK CITY Image & Architecture in Industrial Manchester SHOCK
mark crinson Repro: resolution is OK but please add unsharp masking to back cover image ISBN 978 913107 33 8 From the mid-eighteenth century to the nineteentwenties, from the birth of the Industrial Revolution to the height of Manchester’s global significance and the beginning of its decline, Shock City challenges the idea that Paris was the ‘capital of the nineteenth century’. Mark Crinson re-orients this issue around the development of industrial production, particularly cotton and its manufacture by means of steam power, offering a fascinating and accessibly written account of how new relations in the industrial economy were manifested through the spaces and representations of the first industrial city. Focusing on Manchester’s mills and warehouses, its main trading institution (the Royal Exchange), its magnificent Gothic Revival Town Hall and its late Gothic Revival Rylands Library, this book explores these iconic buildings alongside paintings, prints, maps and photographs of the city throughout the period. Crinson interweaves analysis of buildings and images, urban spaces and new institutions, technol ogy and industrial pollution to show how these were all the products of Manchester’s newly emergent industrial middle classes, who re-made the city in their image. is Professor of Architectural History at Birkbeck (University of London). He previ ously taught for twenty-three years at the University of Manchester. He was President of the European Architectural History Network between 2018 and 2020, and directed the Architecture Space and Society Centre at Birkbeck between 2017 and 2021. SHOCK CITY Image & Architecture in Industrial Manchester ‘In a kind of inversion of grand tourists leaving Britain to view the Continent’s ancient ruins, European visitors (technologists, economists, journalists, architects and spies) were drawn to Manchester for its lessons as much as its sights. It was a place of advanced technology, they thought, a new territory of the modern. But what they, and visitors from other parts of Britain, found was something viscerally repulsive and awesome, something that was certainly new but also discordant and startling. How could this otherness – the city’s scale and its perceived labyrinthine qualities, its noise and murk, its stark facades and forests of tall chimneys – be assimilated to any sense of what a city should be?’ 9781913107338 VAN DYCK and the Making of English Portraiture  Adam Eaker This book offers an original approach to one of Britain’s leading artists: Frank Auerbach. It looks in detail at his portrait drawings, which Auerbach has been making since the 1950s, and which he has always considered important, freestanding works of art. By turns eerie, shocking, enigmatic and hauntingly tender, they demand fresh interpretation and investigation. Reproducing more than a hundred and thirty examples of these portraits, some for the first time, and featuring new essays by curators, scholars and critics, this book provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore and reassess these striking and sometimes unsettling works of graphic art.
