NOW IN ITS thirty-sixth year, the European Fine Art Foundation’s Maastricht event returns to its traditional spring slot following the disruption of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. Despite recent challenges, there has been no impact on the fair’s superlative reputation for museum-quality works, and TEFAF remains the world’s most distinguished large-scale commercial art fair embracing most periods of artistic endeavour from the prehistoric to the contemporary. A distinguished vetting committee will examine objects for quality and authenticity so that private and institutional purchases can be made in good faith (at the time of going to press this process had not yet been completed). Of the 268 exhibitors, thirteen will be showing for the first-time and ten younger, less-established dealers will take positions in the TEFAF Showcase section.

The TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund (TMRF) has recently announced its support for a number of restoration and technical research projects. At the National Museum Cardiff, Édouard Manet’s portrait Monsieur Jules Dejouy (1879) has undergone transformational cleaning, full conservation and technical examinations, thanks to the fund. Furthermore, Neue Galerie, New York, will restore Egon Schiele’s Town among greenery (The old city III) (1917); and Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp, will have funds to restore Michaelina Wautier’s Two girls as St Agnes and St Dorothea (c.1650). Consequently, TMRF will stage a digital presentation of Wautier’s painting and a dedicated talk in collaboration with the International Council of Museums (ICOMCC) will take place during the run of the fair.

Ceylon, probably Kandy; 2nd-half 16th century

Ivory and silver

Dim.: 8.0 × 19.0 × 11.0 cm

Prov: descendants of Afonso de Albuquerque (1453 – 1515), 2nd Viceroy of Portuguese India.

Modelled after a late medieval European prototype, this very rare casket reveals both evidence of Tamil artistic traditions and Ceylonese artistry. It belongs to a restrict group originating from the Imperial Kōţţe workshops and was most certainly made for a high-ranking Portuguese official.

Profusely carved with scrollwork and mythological beasts, most notably the heraldic lion or simha of Ceylon’s royal house, it features a Makara shaped latch, for protecting its valuable contents, and a European Renaissance type escutcheon.

A casket of comparable carving mastery, sent as a gift with the  Ceylonese Embassy to Lisbon, is now in Munich. Two others, closely related, can be seen at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (inv.  – ) and at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum. A fourth casket, formerly in King Fernando II’s of Portugal ( – ) collection, has been recently acquired by the Asian Civilizations Museum in Singapore.

On the top surface four elaborate cartouches of painted and pearl-shell inlaid floral and bird compositions, separated by complex pearl-shell bordered crosses within multiple geometric patterns borders.

What seems to be the only other recorded table of similar shape and size, also dating from the Momoyama period (sold Christie’s London, .., lot ), features an undivided top and plain, possibly later, legs.

Salon du Dessin

22nd to 27th March 2023

Palais Brongniart, Place de la Bourse, 75002 Paris

salondudessin.com

AS THE CHAOS caused by COVID-19 subsides, normality returns to the European art fair calendar. This year sees the thirtyfirst edition of the Salon du Dessin restored to its post-TEFAF Maastricht position in late March, meaning that international museum curators, private collectors and connoisseurs can enjoy both events while in Europe.

Composition with portrait, fish and moonlight, by Louis Marcoussis (1878–1941). c.1926. Gouache and pencil on paper, 20 by 14.3 cm.

GALERIE BERÈS, PARIS

Two lovers, by Parmigianino (1503–40). Pen and brown ink on paper, 13.1 by 15.2 cm.

JEAN-LUC BARONI AND MARTY DE CAMBIAIRE, PARIS

Among the thirty-nine drawings dealers, who hail from eight different countries, will be nine first-time exhibitors. These new faces, from Italy, USA and France, will refresh the fair and offer a variety of works ranging from old masters to contemporary.

The Salon’s museum collaborations are always impressive, and this year is no exception. In the exhibition area of the Palais Brongniart, the Musée de l’Armée will exhibit sheets with a military theme, picked from its little-known holdings of some 10,000 works that date back to the sixteenth century. The Fondation Custodia will show drawings purchased at the fair since 2010 by the late (and greatly missed) Director, Ger Luijtens.

Another treat for visitors to Paris will be Semaine du Dessin – an off-site series of drawings-related events involving nearly twenty museums. Some private tours and visits will embrace a botanical theme and several notable gardens will welcome visitors including those at the Petit Trianon (Versailles), the Bibliothèque national de France (Paris) and the Archives Nationales (Paris).
