ONE OF THE MOST important weeks in the capital’s art calendar, London Art Week (LAW) returns in 2023 with a distinguished roster of participants and an impressive line-up of talks and events. A broad spectrum of galleries and dealers, aligned by the quality of their works and their scholarly expertise, will present objects that span Antiquity through the old masters to the contemporary. Throughout the week, participating galleries and dealerships will be open to welcome collectors, enthusiasts and industry experts drawn to the capital by the major day and evening sales at London’s top auction houses. LAW 2023 welcomes fourteen new participants, including the Indian and Islamic art dealer Amir Mohtashemi, and Nonesuch Gallery who specialise in paintings and works on paper relating to the Grand Tour. While the majority of participants are based in Mayfair and St James’s, LAW’s partnership with Cromwell Place means that several smaller and out-of-town dealers will be able to exhibit in the renowned arts hub in the heart of South Kensington. The LAW Digital initiative allows a number of overseas galleries to participate, including the Italian dealers Paolo Antonacci, Maurizio Nobile and Reve Art, as well as Bernat Gallery from Spain, and Stair Sainty and Thomas Colbourn & Sons from elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
London’s live fine art sales remain chief fixtures of the art market schedule. Christie’s Classic Week auctions include, among others: ‘Impressionists and Modern Art and Works on Paper’ on 30th June; ‘Old Master and British Drawings and Watercolours’ on 5th July; and three further Old Masters sales across 6th–7th July. Sotheby’s stages both its ‘Old Master & 19th Century Paintings’ and ‘Master Works on Paper’ sales on 5th July.
Exquisite English watercolours from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries will be a recurring theme – James Mackinnon exhibits work by masters of the genre including J.R. Cozens, John Sell Cotman and Thomas Rowlandson, while the exhibition at Guy Peppiatt Fine Art ‘British Drawings and Watercolours’ will feature an impressive depiction of Chalfont estate by Thomas Girtin. French art will also be prominent: John Mitchell Fine Paintings will present ‘French Masters on Paper: from Degas to Matisse’; Connaught Brown’s exhibition will feature works by Renoir and Pissarro; while Elliott Fine Art will exhibit a work by the Romantic painter AugusteBarthélémy Glaize (1807–93). A number of participants will host dedicated monographic exhibitions: an exhibition at Clase Fine Art explores Gustave Doré’s major painting Fall of the Rebel Angels (c.1871–72) through ancillary drawings, watercolours and inscribed first edition literary works. Patrick Bourne exhibits works from a private collection under the title ‘Winifred Nicholson: “Colour is the vital power”’. ‘The Alchemist’s Laboratory: Giambologna’s Forge in Florence’, staged by Stuart Lochhead, will reflect the

unique atmosphere of Florence at a particular moment in history by focusing on the studio of the master sculptor. Philip Mould & Co. reintroduces the art of Stephen Tomlin – a key figure of the Bloomsbury group – with a dedicated exhibition of his sculptures and related works. Smaller-scale sculpture will also be the focus at E. & H. Manners, who will be showing rare ceramics from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. ‘Fragile Visions - Vedutismo, capricci’ – a mixed show of ceramics and decorative arts – will be presented by Raccanello Leprince at Cromwell Place.
Modern art will also feature, with Ben Elwes exhibiting newly uncovered works by the self-taught twentieth-century Aymara Bolivian artist Alejandro Mario Yllanes; and Stephen Ongpin Fine Art showing drawings and watercolours by women artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including Gillian Ayres, Helen Frankenthaler, Gluck, Gwen John, Joan Mitchell and Vivian Springford.
The National Portrait Gallery reopens on 22nd June after major renovations: ‘Portrait Mode’ is their national initiative to highlight the genre. Accordingly, portraiture is a notable theme among LAW participants. The Antiquities specialist Rupert Wace will be exhibiting ancient sculptural works alongside portraits by the contemporary painter Rupert Bathurst. Agnews will present a mixed exhibition including a selection of works by Erich Wolfsfeld (1884–1956). In addition, the exhibition ‘Face to Face: Portraits spanning Five Centuries’ at Moretti Fine Art will celebrate the art of portraiture, giving visitors the chance to discover the stories behind the sitters. A curious portrait of Edward Wortley Montagu (1713–76) will be on display in the exhibition ‘Eccentrics & Orientalists: The Lure of the East’ at Trinity Fine Art & Walter Padovani. Montagu travelled widely across Europe, the West Indies and the East, taking on various occupations – author, army officer, Member of Parliament – and was reportedly fluent in Hebrew, Arabic, Chaldaic and Persian.
LAW’s charity partner this year is Art History Link-Up. Since 2016 the organisation has helped young people from diverse backgrounds across the United Kingdom to access and experience the best of Britain’s art collections. The students work towards qualifications in art history in order to promote wellbeing and employment prospects.

Simiolus Netherlands quarterly for the history of art
The current volume of Simiolus marks a moment of transition. It is the first produced by a slightly rejuvenated board of editors, headed by Ruben Suykerbuyk, and it is with enormous gratitude that we thank retiring members Peter Hecht and the much regretted Ger Luijten for their hard work and devotion in safeguarding the quality and production of our journal through the last decades. It is also the last volume to appear in print only, since we will be offering supplementary digital subscriptions and access as of volume 45 (2023). Do send your name and e-mail address to info@simiolus.nl if you are interested, and follow us on Instagram to stay informed.
As usual, the upcoming issue will include a set of papers addressing different topics and periods, ranging from new insights in an Eyckian portrait at the National Gallery in London, Cornelis van
Dalem’s Antwerp house, Jan Brueghel’s stay in Prague, pregnancy portraits by Jordaens and Van Dyck, and the reception of Memling’s oeuvre in Bruges of c. 1900. We are also still accepting submissions for the Haboldt-Mutters Prize of 2022.
Simiolus is published in English, and pays for the cost of translation of papers submitted in Dutch, German, French or Italian which we have agreed to produce. But to go on providing that service while retaining our very modest subscription fee, we do need your support. So please urge your library to subscribe or continue subscribing, and/or take out a subscription yourself! Institutions pay € 100 a year and individuals pay € 60. Visit Simiolus.nl for the conditions of subscription and information on how to advertise, where to send your copy and how to order the backsets not yet in JSTOR

THE TREASURE HOUSE FAIR
22 nd–26th June 2023
Royal Hospital Chelsea, South Grounds, London sw3 4sr treasurehousefair.com
IN JANUARY, WHEN MASTERPIECE (the last-surviving summer event of its kind in London) announced the cancellation of its 2023 fair, citing high costs and poor international exhibitor interest, the London art trade was shaken. The anxiety was mercifully short-lived when soon afterwards The Treasure House Fair was proclaimed as the new contender to take on the empty June slot. To conceive and organise a new high-stature art and antiques event in a mere six months is a remarkable feat. It will also fill the topographical shoes of Masterpiece by locating at the very same spot in the grounds of Christopher Wren’s majestic Royal Hospital Chelsea.
The new Treasure House Fair will initially comprise just sixty exhibitors of very high calibre embracing multiple art disciplines. It is gratifying to see a strong international contingent of exhibitors from the United States, Hong Kong, Switzerland, France and Belgium. Old masters will be noticeably absent at this maiden staging, however, nineteenth-century and modern paintings, drawings and sculpture will be in abundance. Modern British works will be very well represented by six London-based galleries proclaiming this blossoming area of international appreciation and collecting. The fair’s core strength will lie in the decorative arts. A cornucopia of modern and antique furniture and design, silver, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, clocks, antiquities, Chinese and nonEuropean indigenous art, and rare books will be offered for sale. In addition, MA students from Sotheby’s Institute of Art will be on hand to assist attendees during their visit.
The interior of the exhibition space will be redesigned (from that of Masterpiece) from floor to ceiling and for added interest there are plans to stage a curated sculpture park on the grass adjacent to the fair.
For visitors seeking epicurean pleasures, a well-stocked oyster and champagne bar, cocktail bar and a restaurant staffed by Michelintrained chefs will be very welcome additions.
