ONCE MORE, OVER 130 UK and international galleries will converge on Gloucester Green, the north-east corner of The Regent’s Park. Exhibitors at Frieze Masters will show fine and decorative works of art, spanning prehistory to the modern era. Art buyers and enthusiasts will encounter most disciplines including antiquities, medieval art, Asian and indigenous works, rare books, ceramics, old-master paintings and sculpture and an abundance of pieces from the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

A new section, ‘Modern Women’, will champion eleven women artists working between 1880 and 1980. Curated by Camille Morineau and her team at AWARE, solo displays provided by specialist dealers will include artists such as Faith Ringgold, Lisetta Carmi and Ethel Walker.

Another new initiative will be ‘Studio’, an exploration of women’s workspaces. Curated by Sheena Wagstaff from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the studios of Maggi Hambling, Mona Hatoum, Lucia Laguna, Arlene Shechet and Hyun-Sook Song (all represented by commercial galleries) will be explored.

‘Stand Out’ will see Luke Syson (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) reexamine objects once dismissed as merely ‘decorative’. In particular he will investigate the myriad ways that colour has defined the aesthetic value of works of art. Visitors will certainly find the 2023 event illuminating.

Hugely ambitious, Titian: Sources and Documents includes all known documents about Titian and his work dating from his lifetime, and all known references to him in contemporary publications. The relevant section of each text is transcribed in full, preceded by a short summary in English, with extensive annotation and, where necessary, a commentary. The intention of this incredible work of scholarship is to provide a comprehensive survey of the surviving historical evidence about Titian and his career. New transcriptions are provided for the great majority of the documents that have previously been published, and many hitherto unknown documents have been included. Consideration is given also to documents now known only via secondary sources, and to fake documents, of which a signi cant number were produced in the past two centuries.

Charles Hope is a former Director of the Warburg Institute. He has published extensively on fteenth- and sixteenthcentury Italian art. The present book is based on research he has undertaken over the past half-century.

We are proud to have sold Helene Schjerfbeck’s The Lace Shawl to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as the first work by Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) acquired by a museum in the United States. The title refers to the black lace shawl worn by the sitter, Schjerfbeck’s landlady and friend in Ekenäs on the Finnish south coast, Sigrid Nyberg. The abstract execution of the shawl and body created forms and shapes of colour which the artist paired with delicate layers of paint generating a stylized visage expressive of the modern woman of the 1920s. Helene Schjerfbeck projected her own desolation onto the work, proving that even the harsh and melancholic could be beautiful.

Last year, Asian Art in London celebrated its 25th anniversary and saw an impressive combined participant auction turnover of over £65m. The event also welcomed more emerging dealers than ever before, underscoring the enduring pulling power of the capital for collectors, scholars and enthusiasts of Asian art. Activities return this autumn, with a series of events and curated exhibitions, as well as the major auctions. With many out-of-town and international participants temporarily setting up in Mayfair, St James’s and South Kensington for the fortnight, there will be an array of masterpieces for sale both inside and outside the salerooms.

The two weeks of events are broadly thematic – week one, from 19th October, takes Indian and Islamic art as its focus. Two auctions at Christie’s on 26th and 27th October boast a number of highlights, including carpets and exquisite examples of Company School painting. Roseberys holds its ‘Antiquities, Islamic & Indian Arts’ auction on 30th October; while the Chiswick Auctions sale ‘Islamic and Indian Art’ is on 31st October. Arms and armour specialist Runjeet Singh will host an exhibition at Cromwell Place on the multiple uses of the Indonesian Keris dagger as well as a number of intricately carved objects and shields with Islamic calligraphy. On 25th October Sotheby’s will auction Part III of the collection of Edith & Stuart Cary Welch – influential figures in the scholarship and understanding of the arts of India and the Middle East in Great Britain.

Week two, from 26th October, centres on the arts of East Asia. Bonhams (Knightsbridge) will host three auctions: Asian Art (31st October); Fine Chinese Art; and Fine Japanese Art (both 2nd November). Dore and Rees in Frome, Somerset, will have an Asian auction on 6th November. The participating dealers will present a diverse range of objects – from ancient Chinese sculpture, to Edo-period hanging scrolls, through to contemporary works on paper. The late-night openings for Indian & Islamic art are 20th October (Cromwell Place) and 22nd October (St James’s), and for East Asian art are 27th October (Cromwell Place), 28th October (Kensington Church St) and 29th October (St James’s).

NOTE:

Bert Schepers has described this work and a pendant as the work of Jan van den Hoecke, who worked in Rubens’ studio in the 1630s before going to Italy in 1637; he dates the pendants 1635-1637. The attribution to Van den Hoecke was first suggested by Julius Held in the Art Bulletin, 1979. Jaffé maintained an attribution to Rubens in his Catalogo Completo of 1989. The pendant depicts Philosophers Surveying an Ideal City, which may be the picture listed in Jeremias Wildens, Antwerp inventory of 1654 as by ‘Van Hoeck’.
