THIS MONTH the city of New York welcomes back TEFAF for its ninth iteration. Around 90 exhibitors will present exceptional works of art at the historic Park Avenue Armory. The annual event showcases art from the Antique through the contemporary, spanning all disciplines and media. Modern and contemporary design is particularly well represented, as is twentieth-century painting. High numbers of visitors to the sister Maastricht event in March earlier this year proves that there is no substitute for a reallife luxury fair, where visitors can view, touch and discuss objects with world-renowned experts. A rich programme of talks will take place both in person and online; subjects covered will include the art market, conservation and collecting.

THE ART OF CONSERVATION

For centuries paintings have been treasured as religious icons, great works of art, objects of value. But paintings age, and with age comes change: varnish yellows, candles scorch, dust accumulates. From the sixteenth century to the present day the question of how to restore such works has taxed their owners. The articles in The Art of Conservation, commissioned from the foremost scholars in their eld, originally appeared in The Burlington Magazine. Now collected in book form they tell the story of the evolution of the art of conservation throughout Europe and the United States.

1 The conservation history of the Ghent Altarpiece by is probably unique in terms of conservation history, as archival information covering over five centuries can be connected to the physical alterations observed on the painted panels and their frames. It has been subjected not only to the natural ageing associated with the materials employed but also to many structural alterations, the consequences of war, iconoclasm, fire, theft and changes in taste, and also to many restorations. It was extensively overpainted in the mid-sixteenth century, split up and displaced at least nine times, stolen in 1794 following the French Revolution and again in the Second World War, and stored in wretched conditions on several occasions. Some of its shutters were sold in 1816 and sawn in half in Berlin in 1894. The paintings and the frames were treated and examined by restorers in France, Germany and Belgium. New methods of imaging and analytical techniques were used to decipher the altarpiece’s intricate genesis and condition, stimulating the advancement of technical art history and the conservation of old-master paintings. The current conservation treatment, begun in 2012 by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, Brussels (KIK-IRPA), has revealed crucial information on the conservation history of the altarpiece. The present article sheds light on the context of the most important campaigns and asks how they reflect on the appreciation of the masterpiece both as work of art and an object of devotion. ‘In size, complexity and almost encyclopaedic variety, it stands head and shoulders above all other fifteenth-century altarpieces in the Netherlands.

PHOTO LONDON RETURNS to Somerset House this May for its ninth edition. Over 100 exhibitors from 44 cities will take part, with many participating for the first time, including eight galleries from Turkey.

Two prizes will be awarded during the four-day event: the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize for outstanding contribution to the medium, in a ceremony at The Photographer’s Gallery, London; and the Emerging Photographer Award, presented in partnership in Nikon. A programme of talks curated by Thames & Hudson will take place at Somerset House (further details to be announced).

The 2024 Master of Photography is Valérie Belin (b.1964), an acclaimed French artist whose portraiture incorporates many photographic processes and techniques. At Somerset House the exhibition Silent Stories will present three decades of her photographic output, while a major retrospective of her work runs at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux until 28th October.

An insightful exhibition in the public programme curated by Robert Hershkowitz, The Magic Art of French Calotype: Paper Negative Photography 1846–1860, brings together the largest number ever seen in Britain of paper negatives by French practitioners – with many of them shown alongside their corresponding positive prints. The title of the exhibition references the French writer Francis Wey’s pronouncement in 1851 that ‘Photography has attained a magic feeling that neither painting nor drawing could have reached’. There will be plenty to keep the photography enthusiast satiated beyond the four-day event at Somerset House, with several satellite events taking place, such as Peckham 24 – South London Festival of Contemporary Photography, which runs from 17th until 26th May. Simultaneously, a number of photography exhibitions will be staged in the capital’s world-class museums, including Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream In at the National Portrait Gallery; Photography Feminism and the Art of Protest at South London Gallery; and Polly Braden: Leaving Ukraine at the Foundling Museum.

Simiolus Netherlands quarterly for the history of art

The papers in the current issue of Simiolus span five centuries of Netherlandish art history. Svea Janzen presents new insights in an Eyckian portrait at the National Gallery in London, cautiously suggesting him to be Duke Louis IX the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut. Stefaan Grieten revisits the well-known but little-studied house of the enigmatic landscape painter Cornelis van Dalem, presenting new visual sources and an iconographical reading of its facade. In the third paper, Stefan Bartilla studies Jan Brueghel’s 1604 journey to Prague, focusing on its impact on the development of his painted output. Leen Kelchtermans and Katharina Van Cauteren demonstrate that what has long been thought to be a heraldic aberration in double portraits by Anthony van Dyck and Jacques Jordaens should in fact be read as a sign of pregnancy and motherhood. Stefan Huygebaert, finally, addresses the reception of Memling’s oeuvre in Bruges of c. 1900, by

studying a refreshing range of diverse and sometimes surprising source material.

Simiolus is published in English, and pays for the cost of translation of papers submitted in Dutch, German, French or Italian which we have agreed to produce. But to go on providing that service while retaining our very modest subscription fee, we do need your support. So please urge your library to subscribe or continue subscribing, and/or take out a subscription yourself!

Institutions pay € 100 a year and individuals pay € 60. Visit Simiolus.nl for the conditions of subscription and information on how to advertise, where to send your copy and how to order the backsets not yet in JSTOR . We are also still accepting submissions for the Haboldt-Mutters Prize of 2022.
