SUMMER 2024
28th June–5th July londonartweek.co.uk
LONDON’S NATIONAL GALLERY celebrates its 200th birthday this year; their inaugural party in May kick-started a year-long festival of art with the capital at its epicentre. This month London Art Week (LAW) launches its principal summer event, bringing together dealers, auction houses, artists and academics from across the city and beyond to celebrate exceptional art in all its forms. Top international dealers will showcase fine paintings, sculptures and works on paper in scholarly exhibitions, many with accompanying catalogues, against a backdrop of old-master day and evening sales at the city’s leading auction houses.
Vanitas,
Oil on board, 80 by 60 cm. MORETTI FINE ART, 13 DUKE STREET, SW1Y 6DB
The focus for LAW in 2024 is works on paper. Notably, Stephen Ongpin Fine Art will present nearly thirty works on paper by Guercino from across his long career. Highlighting the artist’s versatility as a draughtsman and his skill across different mediums, the works shown will include numerous studies for paintings as well as independent drawings such as landscapes, academies and head studies, many of which have not previously been exhibited or published. In partnership with the Imperial War Museum, Abbott and Holder will offer for sale a set of prints called The Great War: Britain’s Efforts and Ideals. The prints were originally commissioned in 1917 from eighteen artists including C.R.W. Nevinson, A.S. Hartrick, George Clausen, William Rothenstein, Augustus John, Eric Kennington and Muirhead Bone.
LAW’s new collaborator, Trois Crayons, will provide a communal hub in the heart of Mayfair at No.9 Cork Street, where it will host international works-on-paper dealers and a dedicated talks programme. Visiting dealers include Galerie Ratton-Ladrière, Galerie De Bayser, Nathalie Motte Masselink and Ambroise Duchemin.
Sculpture is also well represented. Stuart Lochhead Sculpture will present an exhibition of sculpted likenesses, with highlights including a rediscovered original plaster modèle of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux’s celebrated Why born enslaved? composition. Hignell Gallery presents an open-air exhibition of sculptures by the contemporary artist Helaine Blumenfeld. Her large bronzes, installed in the central gardens of St James’s Square, are inspired by lockdown and the importance of community.
Works by the Swedish painters Anna Boberg and Ivar Arosenius will be exhibited at Ben Elwes Fine Art and Clase Fine Art, respectively. Medieval objects and works of art inspired by the intertwined stories of the many Marys in the Bible will be presented in an exhibition at Sam Fogg; women artists will also be the focus at Elliott Fine Art and Karen Taylor Fine Art.
The Society of Antiquaries of London will be showing an exhibition of works by the contemporary artists Adam Dant and Dan Llywelyn Hall that respond to the collection of the Society. Contemporary is also the focus at Moretti Fine Art as they exhibit thirteen works by Marcos Lozano, each a response to a different painting in the National Gallery, in honour of its 200th birthday.

SUMMER 2024 28th June–5th July londonartweek.co.uk
LAW coincides with major auctions of old-master paintings, drawings and sculpture taking place in the capital: Bonhams, Christie’s and Sotheby’s each will hold dedicated sales in the first week of July. In addition, LAW’s full programme of talks and tours – in person and online – means there is plenty to keep collectors, curators and enthusiasts stimulated both in and outside of the salerooms. Indeed, The Burlington Magazine will co-host a breakfast at Philip Mould & Company on the occasion of their exhibition celebrating the seventeenth-century painter Mary Beale.

Reflections on an Architect and His Collection
Bruce Boucher
An in-depth study that sheds a fascinating new light on Sir John Soane and his worldrenowned collection. This book illuminates a side of Soane’s personality unfamiliar to most students of his life and work by examining key strands in his collection and what they reveal about Soane and the psychology of collecting. Topics include the display of antiquities; his fascination with ruins, both literal and figurative; his singular response to Gothic architecture; and his investment in modern British painting and sculpture.
