Made to sell on to other newspapers, these prints show the story Carter and Carnarvon wanted to tell. But they show another story, too – about the British Empire’s influence in the Middle East, Egypt’s new independence, and the efforts both British and Egyptian excavators put into this remarkable find.

Tutankhamun: The Original Photographs By Christina Riggs (with Rupert Wace) The Times reported on 7 November 1923 that Egyptian authorities had installed a telephone in the Valley of the Kings, to facilitate activities at the tomb of Tutankhamun. In this photograph, a dark-robed Egyptian
ghaffir (security guard) stands as if taking or making a phone call. The image may try to contrast the ‘traditional’ (the ghaffir) and the ‘modern’ (the telephone) for the amusement of British viewers, as if 20th-century Egyptians were unfamiliar with commonplace technologies. W. 88
