The Heights

There’s no denying the charm of Burnaby Heights.

You’ll get that small-town feel right in the middle of the city, while spending time shopping at unique stores, or sitting down for a cup of coffee, ice cream or dinner at one of its many restaurants.

The Heights is right on top of one of the three hills in Burnaby facing the Burrard Inlet. Thousands of immigrants – many of them Italian, English and Irish – came here in the early 1900s with the opening of Hastings Street and the arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908. Soon after that, the first merchants made their way to set up their shops.

Some of the businesses are still owned by second or third-generation merchants, while others are owned and operated by new immigrants of diverse cultures.

On the first Saturday in June is normally Hats Off Day with 50,000 of your neighbours at Burnaby’s biggest festival. Local businesses “tip their hats” to customers, but this year’s event was sadly cancelled due to COVID-19. You’ll also find some festivities around Halloween and the Lunar New Year.

The Heights Merchants Association, which has been an official business

improvement area since 1994, focuses on issues affecting the area, including street beautification, cleaning and decorative signs, and, not to mention their fun seasonal events.
