Gifted kids get special ‘cluster class’
For the full report scan with Layar
Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
The Burnaby school district is offering a new class for gifted learners next fall. Come September, students considered “high ability learners” can attend a multiage cluster class program at Capitol Hill Elementary. The idea is to provide a more intellectually stimulating environment for students whose intellectual, personal and social skills may be developing at varying rates. “I think it’s fantastic that the district is doing this. This is something parents in Burnaby have been advocating for, for a number of years now,” said Burnaby resident Peter Cech, father of two children both considered gifted. Cech is part of a group of local parents who have been calling on the district to provide more options for gifted learners. “This is yet another positive step forward, so we’re grateful,” he added. According to Cech, kids that are gifted sometimes come with unique challenges including over-sensitivities. “A kid that’s gifted needs to be shown something once, and then they need to apply it, while the typical teaching model involves a lot of repetition,” Cech said. “In a perfect world every student should be taught to where they’re at.” The multi-age cluster class program will include a grade 4/5 and a grade 6/7 class. There are also plans for a second program is the South Burnaby area for September 2015. The school district is hosting an information session about the program on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. at Burnaby Central Secondary, 6011 Deer Lake Parkway.

‘Left hanging’: Matthew Senf is a Brentlawn Drive resident who wants to see more traffic calming measures implemented on his street to avert property damage incidents that happen all too often.
Slow down – ‘we live here’ Stefania Seccia staff reporter
The bus needs to go or speed bumps need to go in – either way, Brentlawn Drive residents in North Burnaby want the city to make a decision. But since making a presentation to the traffic and safety committee in November, resident Matthew Senf has yet to hear anything from the city. Senf lives on Brentlawn Drive and presented to the committee to make them aware of the issues faced by the residents in regards to vehicle traffic, resulting in all-too-often property damage to the cars parked along the narrow street. According to ICBC data, from 2004 to

2011 there have been 45 incidents where property was damaged on Brentlawn Drive between Willingdon and Delta Avenue. “Something can be done, it’s just the agenda and I get it, they have quite a bit on their plates,” Senf told the Burnaby NOW. “But we live here, too.” Senf said all he and his neighbours want are significant traffic-calming measures on Brentlawn Drive to curb property damage and safety issues. The issue led to many of the neighbours compiling a report and presenting it to the committee in November. “The residents of Brentlawn Drive have a long history of petitioning city council and the traffic safety commit-
tee, TransLink, Coast Mountain Bus Company and others for improvements in the safety and liveability of their street and neighbourhood,” he said. Since the presentation about two months ago, Senf said no one has contacted him about the issue, despite asking the committee for action on it. “In short, absolutely yes, we’ve been left hanging,” he told the NOW. “Nobody has written us. At the end of the day, I don’t care what the rules are, I pay taxes, I live on the street and our property has been damaged.” At the last meeting, the committee told Senf a recent project in the Capitol Hill and Heights area lowered speed limits

WITH MORE DENSITY AND LAND VALUES RISING, TRANSLINK LOOKS AT OTHER OPTIONS
Have bus loops run their course? Stefania Seccia staff reporter
As Burnaby prepares for a 61 per cent population spike by 2041, it could inevitably mean the end of bus loops in the ever-urbanizing city. Bus loops take up a lot of space on land that is increasingly becoming more valuable, and the trend of removing bus loops in Burnaby has already begun at Brentwood Town Centre. Higher population rates have put pressure on SkyTrain stations to match the volume. As a result, TransLink announced a $164-million project to expand seven of its Expo Line stations, including longer platforms and more access points. Jeff Busby, senior manager of project development and network management at TransLink, says the transit authority is always reviewing how it uses space, particularly with bus configuration. “I think we’re seeing the consequence of the region urbanizing,” he told the Burnaby NOW in a phone interview. “It happens with the concentration of growth in town centres, there’s a competing demand on space. Land values get very high as a result. Land changes, just like malls that are replacing surface parking with structure parking and development. We’ve also been asked to do as much as we can with transit services.” Shape Properties, owner of Brentwood and Lougheed town centres, isn’t alone in removing its bus loop. Lougheed Town Centre’s major redevelopment has cast a questionable future for the bus loop across from the mall, as well. According to a city staff report, a transit hub and plaza are currently part of the redevelopment proposal – complete with an iconic roof, shops and services, a bike service centre and on-street bus stops. Metrotown SkyTrain is one of the stations already undergoing change, but its bus loop has wired buses that have to stay put, while the diesel buses could go to one of two proposed locations for an exchange near the mall. A major planning activity for TransLink is also currently underway at the bustling Surrey Central location, with its bus configuration also in question as new proposals are ongoing.

Where will all the buses go?: The Brentwood Town Centre bus loop is going to be removed as part of a massive redevelopment at the mall. what transit is about. “When you think about … bus exchange buses roaring in and out, it’s not a very pedestrian-friendly environment,” he said. “Look at the transition that’s going to be made at Metrotown, it’s a bleak environment, and it is awful. … It feels like garages. It’s clear it was never designed to be pedestrianfriendly urban environments.” Gordon said the lack of bus loops in Vancouver helped develop commercial hubs by keeping people on streets where businesses could take advantage of the extra foot traffic. “In some circumstances, bus loops do make sense,” he said. “Vancouver is blessed, we never built bus loops in the streetcar era, it’s the best urban design we came up with, in my opinion. That’s why we have streetcar villages like Commercial, Robson (and) Denman. All were created by the streetcar system. It created a healthy urban environment.” As suburban areas become more urbanized, transit orientation is also changing. Most Burnaby Bus loops Page 10

Shooting: Burnaby RCMP on scene at the Cactus Club near Metrotown after one person was shot inside the restaurant Tuesday afternoon. The suspect remains at large.
Police say Cactus Club shooting gang related Cayley Dobie staff reporter
Mounties say a midday shooting at a local restaurant that sent one man to hospital was gang related. B.C.’s gang police and the Burnaby RCMP’s serious crimes unit are now searching for a suspect they say targeted the victim. Shortly before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Mounties were called to the Cactus Club in the 4800-block of Kingsway Avenue near Metrotown after a man was shot. During the initial investigation, Burnaby RCMP determined the victim was shot while inside the restaurant with a group of men, according to a media release from the RCMP. The suspect fled on foot and has yet to be apprehended by police. The victim, a man in his 30s, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, the release added. No one else in the restaurant at the time of the shooting was injured, which is quite lucky, according to the RCMP.
“The restaurant had several patrons inside at the time of the shooting,” said Sgt. Peter Thiessen of the Lower Mainland District RCMP. “It is extremely fortunate that no innocent bystanders were injured.” Burnaby RCMP shut down a portion of Kingsway Avenue while they investigated the shooting and attempted to locate the suspect. Burnaby Staff Sgt. Ghalib Bhayani told the Burnaby NOW on Tuesday the scene was “very hectic” and the investigation was unfolding quickly. Officers from a number of Burnaby RCMP units, including the serious crime unit and forensic identification service, were all on the scene. The RCMP canine unit was also on scene to help search for the suspect, Bhayani said. There were no suspects in custody at press time. Anyone who witnessed this shooting or has any information and has not spoken to a police officer is asked to call the Burnaby RCMP serious crime unit at 604-294-7922 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. cdobie@burnabynow.com

OUR VIEW
Even the government of Yukon Territory sat for 60 days last year. The population of Yukon was less than 34,000 people during the last census. What is the value of a sitting legislature? Premier Christy Clark doesn’t see much of one, preferring to be elsewhere, by her own account. She has called the culture of the legislature “sick.” Of course, that was quite a contrast from her 2005 views, when she said this: “I love question period. I love debate. I love the people I’ve met. I even love the protest-
ers. I love politics.” Some of us also love politics and the opportunity to actually see our politicians debate things, in public, on television, on the record, and under a format in which they’re held to a certain level of decorum. The legislature, like it or not, is where the votes happen. Without the debates and cut-andthrust that Clark either loves or finds sick, we have government via press releases and focus groups. The voters of B.C. deserve better.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Cancer diagnosis changes lives Dear Editor:
On one fine March day the telephone rang in our house. The three words I heard have changed our lives forever: “Caleb has cancer.” How can that be? Our almost three-year-old grandson had been admitted to B.C. Children’s Hospital to the oncology ward, and chemotherapy, lasting until the end of December, started. Our vocabulary has been expanded to include the words “pleuropulmonary blastoma.” It wouldn’t be long before we learned more than we wanted to know about this rare form of cancer that manifested itself as an aggressive malignant tumour growing on his left lung.
Our family had entered the world of children’s cancer. We learned more new words: Doxorubison, Ifosfamide, all with a long list of unpleasant side effects. In June our vocabulary grew again with another word over three syllables: pneumonectomy. Four days before his third birthday, Caleb had his left lung removed, and Timmy the Tumour went to live in Minnesota and is doing research there. Families facing the prospect of dealing with a child with cancer at first are overwhelmed by the complicated issues that one is not prepared for and the decisions about day-to-day life. The vocabulary, the culture of the hospital, and as treatment goes on, the uncertainty, the unknown must all be taken in

stride. We are so proud of our daughter and son-in-law for the strength and courage they have shown during the past year. We are so thankful for the staff at Children’s Hospital who do an incredible job of caring for sick children and their families. During this time, we have learned how caring and giving people can be. Caleb has been in the thoughts and prayers of so many people as he moves in and out of the hospital. The love and support from friends and family and strangers has taken so many different shapes. Recently, our gratitude and thanks go out to the employees of the Burnaby Village Museum who went the extra mile to put a million-dollar smile on a threeyear-old face. We thank you so much for caring. It is these acts of kindness that enable our family to move forward with grace and humility, for we know we are not alone. Katherine Raadsheer, Burnaby
How will deporting ex-KGB agent make Canada better? Dear Editor:
Re: Former KGB agent offered ticket to Russia, Burnaby NOW, Jan. 1. After reading this story, I found it quite disturbing that a “civil liberties” organization here in B.C. would find humor (a free one-way Sochi ticket?) in the forced separation of a man from his family here in B.C. to return to Russia and probable incarceration. And for what? Being a translator? Definitely not something detrimental to
the interest of Canadian national security, I would think. It seems to me that the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association has been on a very firm agenda to have this man out of Canada more than anyone Why would they not afford a man and his family the same Canadian values of compassion, fairness and understanding as they would have wished on their own parents and grandparents decades earlier in the dark days of Soviet oppression? My family goes back almost 200 years to the early Southern Ontario farm communities, and these are values that have made us who we are as Canadians and of which I hold dear. I understand that Mr. Lennikov was “recruited” by the KGB for his language translation skills and was positioned in a low, non-decision-making position of translator. Mr. Lennikov left the KGB after only five years, and most of that time was spent trying to get himself out of the agency – a rather “reluctant” KGB man, to say the least. Isn’t this of any significance to Mr. Roman Zakaluzny, current chairman of the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association? Would he rather Mr. Lennikov not have left the KGB or perhaps had been more ambitious in his work there? I think not. I would suggest that both Mr. Lennikov and Mr. Zakaluzny may have very similar feelings about the KGB and possibly share some common ideals as well. Most Canadians have never known the unbelievable horrors and suffering the Ukrainian people have felt under various Soviet regimes and the KGB, and I don’t pretend to understand these horrible things as they do, but I feel that Mr Lennikov (and his family) is not the enemy. Derek Morton, Burnaby
Bus loop: Brentwood project brings major safety concerns continued from page 6
which provides safe access to and from SkyTrains. This would not have passed scrutiny by anyone who actually uses transit in the area. The report also states that “most” walk distances will be shorter. When – three years? And it’s time and safety that counts: waiting at intersections and for elevators means more time and more missed connections. This
will be worse when the ramp/overpass is closed. At the public hearing on Dec. 10, I asked Corrigan and council questions about the loop closure. Will the ramp be closed? Will the sidewalks be salted and cleared in icy/snowy conditions? Who is liable if someone is injured – the developer or the city? None of the questions were answered. Afterwards, Coun. Pietro Calendino repri-
manded me and expressed his displeasure with “political rants and all the s**t you’re talking about.” Shape’s vice-president was quoted in the NOW saying that the sidewalks near the mall would be maintained. But they didn’t shovel a long stretch on the south side of Lougheed Highway. Maybe they don’t want to cross it either. Helen Ward is a Burnaby resident.

Burnaby hikes service frontage rates City council approved an increase to local area service frontage rates, which have stayed constant since 2007. The service is a cost-sharing program between the city and property owners whose land touches where the upgrade is being done. The annual charge paid by nearby property owners is determined by the type of infrastructure improvement
and the assessed taxable frontage of the property, according to a report. The interest rate for paving will increase by .2 per cent; street lighting will increase by .95 per cent; lane paving will increase by 1.81 per cent; and traffic calming will increase by 1.71 per cent. – By Stefania Seccia, staff reporter
Traffic: Frustrated residents complain continued from page 1
on residential streets to 40 kilometres an hour, that data is currently being reviewed and a report is forthcoming. The committee than referred his presentation to staff for a report. The previous response Senf received was from Stuart Ramsey, Burnaby’s transportation manager, earlier in 2013 in response to a letter Senf had sent to the city on the issue. In the letter, Ramsey said two reasons why the city does not recommend putting speed bumps on Brentlawn is because of the presence of the bus route and the road’s classification as a local collector. “Our position regarding traffic calming for Brentlawn Drive has not changed from past years,” Ramsey added. Local collectors are one step up from
parallel streets that are local residential. Its function is to “provide access to and from a residential area,” according to Ramsey. “The (Burnaby transportation plan) is supportive of encouraging alternatives to travelling by car, such as walking, cycling, and transit,” Ramsey states. “In Burnaby, that has largely been achieved.” Ramsey also said a contributing factor to the volume of traffic on Brentlawn is that drivers are unable to turn left from eastbound Lougheed Highway to northbound Delta Avenue. “As such, some drivers that would otherwise use that route are forced to access their neighbourhood in different ways, such as via Brentlawn Drive,” he said. The city is updating the city’s transportation plan, which will be open to public input, he added, and include a review of the transit network.

O Christmas tree: A crowd gathers to watch a Christmas tree burning demo at the fire hall on Sperling. The demonstration took place during the annual tree chipping fundraiser hosted by the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society on Jan. 5.
Bus loops: ‘Trying to be efficient’ continued from page 3
redevelopment proposals include cyclistand pedestrian-friendly focuses. Gordon noted that while Burnaby has already grown with bus loops, the opportunity to remove loops can happen easily alongside major redevelopment. However, the Brentwood mall bus loop removal came with much controversy. Coun. Sav Dhaliwal and some local residents were up in arms about the change to on-street stops, and residents questioned the safety of people with mobility issues accessing stops that were farther away.
Mayor Derek Corrigan questioned the merit of the consultation process about the SkyTrain redevelopment at Metrotown including the bus loop move, and called it frustrating. In the end, Busby says it’s about making the best use of space. Whether that means bus loops have a future in Burnaby or not, it depends on the growing population’s needs. “It’s mostly about trying to be efficient with space as our region gets denser,” he said. “We have to be as efficient with space as possible.”

rade 8 can be absolutely terrifying. You’re trying to fit in, desperate to make friends and scared of rejection. It’s anything but easy. Now imagine Grade 8 at Burnaby’s Byrne Creek Secondary, with the highest percentage of student refugees in the Lower Mainland. Many are dealing with culture shock, language barriers, poverty and trauma from political violence. “When I came here, I was so shy, I remember just staying in the library the whole of Grade 8,” says Jeanne Mubalama, a Grade 12 student originally from Africa. “Everyone was so tall, the girls were so tall. They were all so terrifying.” n a bright but bone-chilling afternoon, Jeanne is one of four female students, discussing their Grade 8 experiences around a table in the school’s community room. The others laugh in sympathy and offer their anecdotes: trying to make friends but feeling shy, speaking in squeaky nervous voices, feeling pressured and worrying about what everyone else thinks of you. When you ask where these students are from, their stories are complicated; but all came to Canada from Africa as children and grappled with the inevitable culture shock that comes with life in a new country. A few years ago, community school coordinator Iha Farquhar-Hayer was concerned about this particular group of girls. They stood out as leaders and had potential, but it wasn’t clear if they were going to forge a healthy path or a dysfunctional one. “They are lovely, wonderful kids, but you can tell, they need extra support,” Farquhar-Hayer says. That’s when she connected with Loretta Cella, founder of the Passion Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to helping young women become leaders and mentors to their peers. But why just focus on girls? “If I could have another minime, I would do a program with boys and girls,” she says. hen she cites the stats from the Canadian Women’s Foundation: more 20 per cent of girls in B.C. deliberately cut or harmed themselves, about 75 per cent of Aboriginal girls

under age 18 have been sexually abused, and the percentage of girls who feel self-confident drops from 36 per cent in Grade 6 to only 14 per cent by Grade 10. That’s not to mention the eating disorders, depression and sexualization of young girls. Cella meets regularly with the Byrne Creek students and uses her life coaching skills in a teen-friendly way to help them develop strong self-esteem, a healthy self-awareness and good leadership skills. The girls learned to rewrite the internal script about themselves, challenge their negative attitudes and reframe their thinking. Three or four years later, it’s hard to believe these girls were ever considered at-risk. They come across as confident, charismatic, articulate, friendly and funny. They smile and make eye contact when greeting you, and

Guarding the gateway to Burnaby’s history Stefania Seccia staff reporter
Fifty thousand council records, 12,000 bylaws and 41,000 textual records dating back to Burnaby’s incorporation in 1892 – all this is now under the guardianship of a new city archivist. Rebecca Pasch started in her new role in late November, but she has been working for the city since May 2008. The city archives are based in McGill Library. Around the corner from the front desk is a room kept chilled between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius to keep about 600 metres of records in pristine condition. “I was hired on as part of the Heritage Burnaby project,” Pasch said. “I wrote photographic descriptions for Heritage Burnaby. I was in charge of describing and rehousing and digitizing the photographs, so you can have them put online.” Pasch has a photography degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and started out as an architectural photographer. Through her work, she wound up taking a contract with West Vancouver Museum and Archives. Then she found herself in Burnaby. After describing photographs for the city, she showed an interest in the oral history project that was next and received the training to stay on and help out.
“The city is really great that way,” she said. “They’re always wonderful if somebody shows initiative, they get the training.” With a love of photography and history, Pasch says she can see how she ended up in her position now as city archivist. Former archivist Arilea Sill left the position to return to her hometown near Halifax to take on a new role in the same field. “I found her (Sill) really inspiring to work for,” she noted. “She had her hands in everything. She created every important feature in the archives.” Pasch said she hopes to continue in Sill’s footsteps and intends to do more outreach programs. “I’d love to do more of that,” she added. “To get out into the public and let them know we’re here as a resource and to help them so they can also … donate and that kind of thing, too.” The archives has currently undertaken two projects Pasch says she’s excited about: the book-digitizing project, where the city has selected several books to digitize and put online for researchers; and the moving image project where films will be digitized, including ones donated by city freeman George McLean. “We are the record keepers,” she said. “We’re responsible for those records. In order for things to be in order, for things to be lawful, we have to have records.”

Guardian of the past: Rebecca Pasch is the new archivist for the City of Burnaby. Pasch said the city archives department plays an important role in the democratic process, by keeping facts, evidence and significant historical decisions
preserved and available for anyone to look through, keeping the government accountable. “We’re also here for the citizens of Burnaby,” she said. “If
there’s anything they need to know about. We have a duty to remember.” For more about the city archives, visit www.burnaby.ca.

TOM: And the extra weight of the larger wheels is what cuts into your acceleration and fuel economy. RAY: And here’s one more strike against fancy, colossal wheels: Because of the shorter sidewalls of their tires, the rims are closer to the pavement, so they get bent and damaged more easily by potholes and curbstones. If you’re content with how the 17-inch wheels look on the Ram, that’s what I’d go for. Send car questions to Click and Clack via www. cartalk.com. Representative semi-monthly lease offer based on new 2014 Versa Note 1.6 S (B5RG54 AA00), manual transmission/2014 Sentra 1.8 S (C4LG54 AA00), manual transmission/2014 Rogue S FWD (Y6RG14 AA00), CVT transmission. 0.9%/0%/3.9%
Dear Tom and Ray: I’m going to buy a 2014 Ram Laramie pickup. I have a choice of 17-inch or 20-inch tires. I don’t plan to drive off-road much, if at all. I do plan to drive several thousand miles around town and then
since the wheel-tire combination usually ends up being about the same size, your dog and wife might not get much help from the smaller wheels in terms of getting into the truck. Definitely get the running boards so that they have a step. But in terms of cornering, when a tire has a shorter sidewall, it’s stiffer, so you get less flexing from the tires on turns. That’s how larger wheels improve handling. RAY: But that same stiffness is what makes your overall ride harsher.

Ram, Stewart? TOM: The other reason people opt for larger wheels is that, up to a point, they can improve handling. Usually as a wheel gets larger, the tire’s sidewall (or aspect ratio) gets smaller, so the total diameter of the wheel-tire combination stays about the same. RAY: This is so the speedometer stays accurate and, more importantly, so the wheel-tire combination fits inside the wheel well and doesn’t scrape. TOM: And by the way,

mileage on the highway, too. I think you’re right to lean toward the 17-inch wheels, Stewart. We’re generally opposed to people supersizing their wheels. RAY: Smaller wheel-tire combinations provide better mileage (city and highway), better acceleration and a quieter, more comfortable ride. TOM: So why, you ask, would anyone give up all those things and pay extra to get ginormous wheels? RAY: ‘Cause they look cool! Have you seen those 20-inch bad boys on the
perhaps 10,000 miles towing a travel trailer that weighs about 7,500 pounds. My thinking is that the 17-inch tires would weigh a lot less and so would provide better mileage around town. They also might be quieter rolling down the road. Another nice feature is that my wife and dog have short legs, so getting into and out of the truck will be easier. What I’m wondering is: What effect will the smaller tires have on mileage on the highway as I tow the trailer long distances at 65 m.p.h.? – Stewart TOM: You’ll get better

SFU women’s soccer coach takes on new responsibilities Ben Hodge

After 26 years of building the Simon Fraser University women’s soccer program into one of the top collegiate soccer programs in North America, SFU head coach Shelley Howieson accepted a new position as the facilities manager for the SFU athletics and recreation department. “Over the years I had the good fortune to work with some of Canada’s finest collegiate athletes. More importantly, I’ve had the opportunity to watch so many aspiring young female athletes blossom into engaged young women ready to take on the world after their four years in our program,” said Howieson. “I have had many fond memories of some very significant milestones in our program, but what I’ll remember most are the wonderful people that have touched my life so

During her tenure, Howieson guided the Clan to 22 winning seasons and led the women’s soccer program in their transition from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to the NCAA, a transition that started with a second-place finish in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in the program’s first NCAA season in 2010. Those seasons in the NAIA included two national championships in 1996 and 2000, including an impressive 274-162-47 overall record. “I am pleased that after an illustrious career as our head women’s soccer coach that Shelley will be joining my staff as our facilities man-

I’m thrilled that Shelley has chosen to continue her career on the administrative side of the department.” Howieson coached for over 30 years, including numerous coaching appointments to senior provincial teams. The Canadian Soccer Association honoured Howieson as the 3M coach of the year, and in 1995 she was nominated for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award. In addition to NAIA national championships, Howieson also led the Clan to a pair of runner-up finishes in 1997 and 1998. Senior guard Kia Van Laare potted a pair of game-winning free throws to complete a 63-60 comeback win for Simon Fraser University over No. 9ranked Seattle Pacific in Great Northwest women’s basketball. The New Westminster Secondary grad came off the bench to score eight points, including four from the charity stripe in the final three minutes of play. The Clan made 17 of 23 shots from the free throw line, including 15 in the second half to fuel the rally. SFU led 26-21 at halftime, but allowed Seattle Pacific to go on a 19-4 run to start the second half. Senior Rebecca Langmead started the comeback with back-toback buckets and an assist to junior Katie Lowen to cut the deficit to six points. Langmead finished the game with eight points, five rebounds and three blocks. Lowen had 14 points and a team-high six rebounds and four assists. D-Tox Spa, 1780 Manitoba St., Vancouver, 604-559-7488, www.dtoxspa.ca
Recently opened in the Olympic Village, Aqua Sushi + Juice Bar offers both brown rice sushi and fresh-pressed juices for those on-the-go. All sushi here is brown rice or low-carb, and the salmon used is only of the wild sockeye variety. The real crab California mango ($10) and veggie ($6) rolls and kale goma-ae ($4) are made from the freshest ingredients, as are the five juice options ($6 for 16oz). Cleanse your system with the pineapple-apple-ginger-mint, or rejuvenate with the carrot-orange-grapefruitsginger-cayenne combinations — either way, each one is delicious. Being healthy never tasted this good. 1764 Manitoba St., Vancouver, 604-559-9766, www.aquajuicebar.com

Everything we’ve all come to know and love about the brand is here, and this airy woodand-white space truly feels like a reflection of the clothing: simple and clean, well-thought out and beautiful. The eponymous collection has even more pieces for us to covet now. We’ll be making room in our closet for quilted front black leather skirts ($68), cozy mottled mustard scarves ($38), staple Simona leggings ($38), Neutra tunics ($78) and Lottie knit hats ($24.75). Sister line Loft 82 makes an appearance, too, in the form of warm shearling jackets ($188) and Alex sweaters ($88). Although the Hanwha sweatshirt ($104) with square logo and side pockets is for men, we easily see ourselves, ahem, borrowing it from our fella’s drawer. Oak + Fort, still as mighty as ever.
Layar connects you to websites, photo galleries, facebook pages, twitter, videos and much more!

Grill & Vine is the latest addition to The Westin Resort & Spa Whistler, a contemporary but casual space with upscale food offerings. Open for both breakfast and dinner, every menu item is made from fresh ingredients, coming by way of local suppliers such as Pemberton’s North Arm Farm. For starters, the crispy quail ($15) is a savoury twist on traditional chicken and waffles. Mains come straight from the grill and stone hearth oven; you can’t go wrong with the light Louis Lake steelhead ($30) or the hearty wild board lasagna ($26). Sides here are the definition of comfort food — think chorizo tater tots ($6) and truffle mac & cheese ($8). The wine list of local and international labels is just as phenomenal, and available by the glass, carafe or bottle. Après-ski just got a whole lot swankier. 4090 Whistler Way, Whistler, 604-905-5000, www.westinwhistler.com
