WELCOME
BURNABY NOW
BURNABY COMMUNITY SERVICES
We couldn’t be more pleased to have teamed up with Burnaby Community Services to create this unique publication, the first Burnaby Seniors’ Guide To Well Being. In these pages, we’ve compiled a variety of resources, information and organizations to help Burnaby seniors make the most of their “golden years.” Alternatively, when you need support, guidance or resources, the guide has a wide spectrum of services and agencies right here in our own community.
Welcome to the inaugural Burnaby Seniors Guide to Health and Well Being. The guide is a listing of services for and stories about seniors 55+ and their families to help them maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. This publication is printed and distributed through a partnership between Burnaby Community Services and the Burnaby Now as part of our common goal to keep Burnaby residents informed and engaged.
Seniors now make up the fastest growing segment of society – and are enjoying their retirement years like never before, thanks in part to living more active, healthy lives. We’re excited about this opportunity to help local seniors live their best “golden years” possible.
The inclusion of agencies and businesses in the guide do not constitute an endorsement, nor does omission constitute disapproval. For more info about services in your community please contact Burnaby Community Services at 604-299-5778 or visit www.BbyServices.ca. Stephen D’Souza, Executive Director Burnaby Community Services

Welcome: Coming to Canada as a senior By Christina Myers, contributing writer
C
oming to a new country – with a new language, culture and social expectations – can be confusing and overwhelming for anyone at any age. But for a senior, who has already lived most of their lives somewhere else, it’s a uniquely challenging event. For some newcomers, there’s also the additional challenges of having spent time as a refugee or in a war-torn country. And in a city like Burnaby, where there are thousands of residents, dozens of cultures and languages and a multitude of communities, it can be hard to know where to start. The Burnaby Multicultural Society provides a variety of programs and resources for newcomers of all ages, but some that are specifically intended for seniors. The society’s goal is to help integrate new Canadians
12
as fully functional and valued citizens. Their mission statement reads, in part: “The BMS promotes the development of an integrated, multicultural society that both shares and celebrates the contributions of the peoples of all ethnic and cultural origins.” Specifically, the organization helps newcomers to settle successfully, to celebrate their heritage and works to advocate for public policy to ensure equity and access for all. For seniors they offer an outreach program and an elder abuse program, along with a variety of other resources for individuals of all ages. For example, two ongoing sessions include English conversation classes for seniors and a workshop for seniors to help learn about using smartphones. Their elder abuse workshops
focus on the issue of seniors who may be abused by family members, caregivers and others – in the form of physical, sexual, financial or emotional abuse. It’s estimated that about eight per cent of older adults in B.C. are likely to experience abuse but it’s likely the overall number is higher due to the likelihood of low reporting. Shame or guilt may stop the person from reporting the problem; on the other hand, the perpetrator may be a loved family member that they may feel compelled to protect. The society runs a variety of workshops and offers resources to help seniors learn about and deal with elder abuse. The Burnaby Multicultural Society is online at www. thebms.ca, or at 6255 Nelson Ave. Call 604-431-4131 for more information.

BURNABY SENIORS’ GUIDE 2014
Living at home: Simple solutions in the community can help By Christina Myers, contributing writer
T
here’s no place like home. It was true for Dorothy, and it’s true for many seniors as well. Though individual needs – be it medical, physical or simply social – can lead some seniors to prefer the benefits of group or supported living situations in retirement communities or assisted living centres, many seniors prefer to stay in their own homes as long as they can. But with many living on their own in “empty nests” – usually without children and often without a partner – there can be a variety of challenges to ensure safety and, equally importantly, happiness. Programs like Better at
Home, a United Way-managed program funded by the provincial government, are going a long way to help make that happen. Better at Home works to support seniors in their own communities by providing simple services delivered by local non-profit agencies. Services can include social visits, yard work, simple home repair, transportation to appointments, help with grocery shopping and housekeeping. The services are all non-medical and are considered supplemental to home support services provided through local health authorities. Provided by a mix of volunteers and paid staff, the services are paid for with a fee based on the senior’s income.
BURNABY SENIORS’ GUIDE 2014
“We want to help seniors age with dignity and maintain their quality of life,” said Michael McKnight, president and CEO of the United Way of the Lower Mainland, in a press release announcing the expansion of the program last year. “Better at Home helps seniors stay engaged and independent. By providing seniors with the support they need, United Way helps prevent isolation, loneliness and related health problems.” To find out more about Better at Home services, see betterathome.ca or call Burnaby Better at Home at 604-297-4877. Aside from services and supports, there are many ways to make living at home safer and more enjoyable: make connections with neighbours and have their phone numbers on hand in case of emergency; get involved in a local seniors group or community centre and make new friends in the neighbourhood; assess your home space to make sure it is “fall friendly” – falls are the one of the leading sources of injury for seniors, so learning more about preventing falls can help keep home a safe place to be. For more information on a variety of topics, and resources for seniors, see www.seniorsbc.ca for the province’s website on healthy aging, medical services, and more.

BURNABY SENIORS’ GUIDE 2014
Take Care: Get support to help balance life while caretaking By Christina Myers, contributing writer
L
ife always comes full circle. For some families, that can often mean that the role of care-taking can swap from parent to child as time goes on. That can be challenging for both the parent – who is accustomed to being more independent – and for the “child” who, as an adult may also be caring for their own children and balancing a busy working schedule too. The changing roles, demands on time and energy and uncertainty over health conditions can easily cause stress and anger. And more and more families are finding themselves in this changing dynamic, so much so that there’s even a word for it: the sandwich generation. The middle of the sandwich is the adult child who may be caretaking for not just their parents but even possibly grandparents, as well as their own children at the same time. “Caregivers may be so focused on caring for a loved one that they neglect their own well-being which may affect the quality of
BURNABY SENIORS’ GUIDE 2014
care they provide,” notes the Province of B.C.’s website on the issue of caregiving for family members. But how to ensure your own “well-being” is looked after? The short answer: get a little help. Here in the city, the Burnaby Seniors Outreach Services Society runs programs and events throughout the year to help support seniors and their family caregivers in a variety of ways. The group offers a self-help support group that meets weekly, education sessions throughout the year with speakers and information, and one-to-one counselling. They also have an extensive guide for resources for family caregivers to help navigate services, government programs and community initiatives that may help. Each year, the society also runs a family caregivers information and speakers fair with exhibitors, talks, and plenty of helpful resources. The society can be reached at 604-2912258 or online at www.bsoss.org.
