our city

I

t’s a sprawling, bustling city of 250,000 people – but it’s often overlooked in favour of its better-known neighbour to the west.

Though it may lack Vancouver’s cachet, Burnaby has its own brand of British Columbian charm – and we’re here to help you discover it. From the mighty Fraser River in the south to the ocean waters of Burrard Inlet to the north, with a whole lot of city in between, Burnaby is a study in contrasts. There are four bustling city centres: Edmonds, Metrotown, Brentwood and Lougheed. Each has its own unique mix of shopping and dining that reflects the global makeup of the city’s

TOURISM INFORMATION population, plus arts and cultural offerings to appeal to people of all ages and walks of life. But there’s a green side to the city, too. Keeping watch over it all is Burnaby Mountain, with its expansive network of trails. Within the city you can find two large lakes, and dozens upon dozens of parks from the small to the expansive. And there are a number of only-in-Burnaby attractions that are well worth your time, not the least of which are the family favourite Burnaby Central Railway and Burnaby Village Museum. So what are you waiting for? Get out and discover everything Burnaby has to offer.

I

n the north of Burnaby, there’s a unique urban village that stretches along one of the city’s most famous streets. The street, of course, is Hastings. And the neighbourhood is Burnaby Heights.

The area is part of the traditional territories of the Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish and Musqueam First Nations. The Indigenous peoples shared the hill for millennia while foraging, hunting, fishing, clam gathering and more, back when wildlife such as deer and black bears were abundant. In 1906, the district then known as Vancouver Heights was developed from a blueprint as part of the expansion of the City of Burnaby. In 1908, a streetcar line was set down in North Burnaby, paving the way for the beginnings of a flourishing merchant district. Thousands of newly arrived immigrants, many of them from Italy, England and Ireland, made their way to the area – and many of today’s businesses are

still owned by secondand thirdgeneration members of those families. In the decades since, newcomers from all parts of the globe have arrived, and with them a new array of businesses. Today’s Heights district is a vibrant, diverse neighbourhood that features culinary adventures to tempt all taste buds. Italian offerings still abound, but these days you can also find food from just about everywhere else – with Turkish, Japanese, Greek, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian cuisine nestled alongside French pastries and delectable ice cream treats. Want to find a great meal? You can just walk along Hastings Street – or, if you want to plan ahead, check out www. burnabyheights.com for a full listing of food and drink options.

You can also find an array of shopping opportunities, so if you’re looking for somewhere to support a unique local business – for art, fashion, pet supplies, jewelry, books or more – then make the Heights one of your must-see stops.

t’s not all highrises and highways – there’s a secret, serene side to our city, too.

With the Fraser River to the south and Burrard Inlet to the north, Burnaby is bounded by water and covered in trees and natural greenways. Opportunity is abundant for those who are keen to explore the city’s great outdoors. With no less than 150 city parks, Burnaby has something on offer for everyone. At the top of it all – literally – is Burnaby Mountain, where a 1,400acre conservation area co-exists with a thriving university and the UniverCity residential development.

Here, visitors will find breathtaking views over Burrard Inlet and the North Shore, and over downtown Vancouver and points beyond. You’ll find the Kamui Mintara (Playground of the Gods) totems at the top of the hill – they were created by Japanese Ainu sculptors Nuburi Toko and his son Shusei, gifted as a gesture of goodwill between Burnaby and its sister city of Kushiro, Japan. The Centennial Rose Garden, a playground and ample greenspace for picnicking live alongside the treed trails that offer abundant hiking and mountain biking opportunities. For those on a mission, try out the “Burnaby Grind,” the 1,400-metre-long velodrome trail that climbs from the velodrome on the north side of the mountain all the way to the top. ➡

The city’s core is home to not one but two major lakes. Burnaby Lake offers an 11-kilometre loop walking trail, with an abundance of shorter options for walkers of all ages and abilities. You can also check out the bird life at Piper Spit, where a viewing tour is popular with birdwatchers. Deer Lake, meanwhile, is at the

heart of the city’s cultural precinct.
