message from the foundation

60 Years of Caring

This past year, Burnaby Hospital Foundation partnered with the Fraser Health Authority to develop a High Level Master Plan for Burnaby Hospital that would create a 20-year vision for the hospital’s expansion and growth. The results of this plan outlined three immediate projects—totaling $5.5 million—aimed at improving patient care in priority areas: • Emergency Super Track Expansion • Increased Endoscopy and Cystoscopy Procedures • Sterile Processing Department Upgrades

It has been a very exciting year for Burnaby Hospital Foundation. This past year marked the launch of Burnaby Hospital’s 60th anniversary—a milestone that celebrates the hospital’s 60 years of caring for our community. Burnaby Hospital’s history is built upon a strong spirit of philanthropy; evident in the fact that the dream to build a hospital in Burnaby began in the early 1940s with a group of concerned citizens. Looking back, I don’t think this group of concerned citizens could ever imagine how much our community would change and grow— demanding more of its community hospital than ever before. From Burnaby’s 1952 city population of about 62,000 to a service area that now serves over 450,000 across Burnaby and East Vancouver, much has changed since the hospital’s doors first opened in October 1952.

It is clear there is much work ahead of us. As we move forward, I am grateful to those who go above and beyond to help us make Burnaby Hospital the best it can be. The difference you make is evident in the gift you bring to patients and their families. So many lives count on your support, and we look forward to building a brighter future for those who need Burnaby Hospital’s services for many years to come. Sincerely,

Cheryl Carline President & CEO Burnaby Hospital Foundation

message from the board of trustees

From a Little Hospital on the Hill...

Let me begin by saying that I am both humbled and honoured to be stepping into the role of Chair of Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s Board of Trustees. As a member of the Board over the last few years, I am grateful for the friendship and mentorship of Past Chair Rahim Rajan in preparing me for this role. Throughout his seven year tenure, Rahim’s pivotal role ensured Burnaby Hospital was in the best possible position to help those in the community who needed its services. Most notably, his leadership helped acquire a new $4.85 million MRI suite for Burnaby Hospital in 2009. The shoes he passes on to me will be big to fill, but I am excited for this opportunity and look forward to carrying the torch he has lit so brightly.

As we celebrate Burnaby Hospital’s 60-year history of serving our community, we reflect on how far Burnaby Hospital has come from being known as the “little hospital on the hill” in an area that was primarily farmland. Today, Burnaby Hospital receives over 200,000 patient visits each year and has the third-busiest Emergency Department in all of B.C.—a testament on the importance of Burnaby Hospital to the communities that rely on its health care delivery. This change did not happen overnight and many of our supporters have been with us through this journey. I am constantly moved by the stories shared from patients and those whose lives have been touched by the hospital, and am thankful for your unwavering support. The hospital staff are passionate, committed individuals who work closely as a team to provide the best level of health care possible—putting the patient needs as their top priority. We are lucky to have them. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish to assure you of our unwavering commitment. Together, we can continue to build a strong future for Burnaby Hospital and our community. Sincerely,

Tinu Mathur Chair, Board of Trustees Burnaby Hospital Foundation

She remembers riding her bike down a gravel road now known as the Barnett Highway. She might have been about 12, and her grand-father, Fred Mason, waved goodbye from across the street. She describes him as an “original agitator”—one of a handful of people who championed the establishment of a hospital for Burnaby, British Columbia, population 33,000. His passion must have imprinted on her, though; her goal from the start of nursing school was to work at Burnaby Hospital. In 1959, Nurse Marion Heritage began a lengthy career at the hospital and in the community—a place that continued to be intertwined in her life in many ways. From dramatic treatment for colon cancer, a heart concern and a detached retina, to extraordinary care for her husband Bill, with advanced Parkinson’s, and her grandson for childhood injuries, Marion cannot remember a time when Burnaby Burnaby General admits its Centennial Wing, built at a cost first patient. Heritage, Former In the early 1940s, BurnabyMarion was still a community Patient and Third Generation of “only” 33,000 residents. Yet its citizens, perhaps Supporter, with a photo of sensing the growth to come, grandfather and limited the who Fred by Mason advocated to build Burnaby lack of local hospital care, had the dream of building Hospital in the 1940s. a hospital of their own. On July 14, 1943, representatives from eight Burnaby groups met as concerned citizens at the Canadian Legion Hall. Their question: Can we, together, build a hospital? The question was audacious. Government was skeptical and the Second World War was in full fury and resources were scarce. But through door-to-door pleas, cake sales, bingo nights and even the raffling of a new house, the Burnaby Hospital Fund Raising Committee, later the Burnaby Hospital Society, raised thousands of dollars. Seeing the enthusiasm of the community, the municipal government became a supporter, donating 17 acres of open land for the site. Still, the effort was driven by the community. The raffles continued, but the citizens also voted a $196,000 appropriations bylaw to qualify for provincial and federal grants. On May 5, 1950, W.T. Willson turned sod at the site, starting a 30-month, $686,000 construction process. On October 30, 1952, Burnaby General Hospital was officially opened, and it admitted its first patient four days later. With plenty of community spirit, lobbying and quite the number of cake sales, Burnaby’s citizens had given themselves the largest, most modern suburban hospital in Canada.

Feisty. That’s the word the chief physician at Burnaby Hospital uses to describe the spirit of a community that not only built its own hospital 60 years ago, but continues to quietly ensure it gets what it needs in the way of state-of-the-art equipment through neighbourhood support. Looking back on his 35 years at the hospital, Dr. David Jones speaks with reverence and gratitude for the residents of Burnaby and East Vancouver. “We keep our heads down here, and get things done,” he says. Cathie Heritage would agree, as would her maternal great-grandfather, who was one of the original advocates for a hospital in Burnaby. Cathie wells up when she thinks of her mother Marion’s life-saving treatment for colon cancer almost 35 years ago. “They gave her five years,” she says, “and she’s still going strong.” Burnaby Hospital seems to be in the genes of Cathie’s family, leading her to where she is now: Executive Having added capacity, the Thirty years on, Burnaby hospital enhances care. else? The community again came together, raising funds and petitioning government for expansion. In 1954, Burnaby’s citizens approved an expansion appropriations bylaw to add beds, and, in 1956, planning began for a 123-bed expansion to double the hospital’s capacity. The Centennial Wing opened in May 1959. And yet Burnaby’s growth was so rapid that the hospital was again running at full capacity by the end of 1960. While wrestling with the problem of available beds, Burnaby Hospital added needed clinical services. The Emergency Department began operating 24 hours a day in 1960. Two four-bed activation units were created for patients requiring physical rehabilitation. The hospital expanded the range of orthopedic surgery procedures. In 1965, the hospital added a cardiac arrest team—and a team of “candy stripers.” An intensive care unit was established in 1968. After some years of discussion, Burnaby General broke ground for a new 147-bed extended care wing in 1971. It opened in 1973. Two years later, the Ministry of Health approved a 300-bed acute care expansion project. The new acute care tower and the Atchison Wing were opened in 1977.

Like most kids, Braden Senner, 15, has a high squirm-factor when it comes to hospitals. So, five years ago, when the end of his thumb was badly cut, Dr. Joanne Rowell-Wong’s Emergency Department “magicians” sewed it back, and he had to get over it. Add visits to see his grandparents during recent extended stays, and many after-school hours in the office of executive director and mom Cathie Heritage, and this high school rugby player knows the hospital well. As head of the third-busiest Emergency Department in B.C., Dr. Rowell-Wong says “We work in partnership here.” Braden plans to become a firefighter, following in his dad’s volunteer footsteps, and four generations The comes of 10,000th familypatient members whose workplace to Burnaby Hospital and is presented with a get well work is focused and community gift, 1954. on helping others. By 1982, the hospital was admitting 15,000 patients a year (a far cry from the 200,000 patient visits last year). While the expansions of the 1970s had relieved many physical constraints, public budget woes presented financial constraints. That year, local citizens joined hands, much like the citizens of the 1940s, to establish the Burnaby Hospital Foundation as a way to help sustain and build the hospital’s facilities and services. One of the Foundation’s earliest successes was its role in acquiring the hospital’s first computed tomography (CT) scanner in 1986. In 2009, it would be instrumental in raising $4.85 million thanks to overwhelming community support for the hospital’s first magnetic resonance image (MRI) unit. Despite tightening government budgets, the hospital continued to enhance its programs and services by adding many areas of care to its original listing, including cardiac care, ophthalmologic surgery, pediatrics and palliative care. In orthopedic surgery, the hospital has become a leader, conducting thousands of hip and knee surgeries a year. According to Dr. Tim Kostamo, Orthopedic Surgeon, the Foundation’s support has been critical, such as in the recent acquisition of a much needed arthroscopy kit: “Orthopedics is equipment-intensive. To provide excellent surgery, we need excellent equipment, and the Foundation and its donors are fantastic at supporting that. Without them, we would be one or two generations behind.” Sixty years ago, the citizens of Burnaby opened a hospital to serve 35,000 people. Today, that hospital serves communities of 465,000 people.
