e are coming to the end of our year as Most Enterprising Area in the UK, and what a year it’s been, with national campaigns, ministerial and royal visits, business park launches, trade missions showcasing Burnley’s offer, all of which have generated positive press coverage and real investment leads. The Business Secretary Vince Cable officially opened the Burnley Bridge Business Park and visited several successful businesses, he was so impressed by what he saw he said “if every other part of Britain was like Burnley we wouldn’t be talking about a recession”; The Sunday Times reported Burnley is a ‘first time buyers Shangri-la’; The Minister of State for Business and Energy said Burnley is “leading the way” at our London Showcase event; HRH The Duke of York opened the University Technical College and praised the superb education and training facilities; global aerospace giants Kaman Aero Systems opened their UK Centre of Tooling Excellence, Kaman Tooling, on Burnley’s Innovation Drive; TRW were awarded the Global Quality Award the highest award for excellence across the worldwide group; Trebor Developments were selected as development partner for the Knowledge Park in Burnley’s Knowledge

Vince Cable mixing it up with The VEKA UK Group

The VEKA UK Group was delighted to welcome Vince Cable back to the company’s Burnley HQ to officially open the PVC-U system supplier’s impressive, new mixing plant. The Business Secretary enjoyed a tour of the Farrington Road site with the UK Company Directors and Global VEKA Group Board Member Boni Eichwald, who had travelled from Germany to attend the opening of the state-of-the-art mixing plant, which has seen investment of £5m. Mr Cable said it was a pleasure to be back at VEKA celebrating further success with the company. Before unveiling a commemorative plaque of the official opening, he discussed the scale of the development and described it as “a European success story” which will strengthen trading relationships across the UK and abroad. Burnley Council’s Julie Cooper and Steve Rumbelow attended the event, as did Michael Damms Chief Executive of the East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce. The VEKA UK Group’s new facility is now the most technically-advanced PVC-U mixing plant in the UK. It has been designed with future expansion in mind, which could potentially take capacity from the current 48,000 tonnes to a possible 72,000 tonnes. The VEKA UK Group Managing Director Dave Jones explains: “The Group’s capital expenditure over the last two years totals more than £15m. This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the future of our industry in the UK, and the success we want for our customers. The new mixing plant will allow The VEKA UK Group to become even bigger and stronger over the coming years, and allows us to offer even better service and stability for our customers. “It was a pleasure to welcome the Business Secretary back to the site to see the finished plant following his visit to Burnley last year. We really feel that our investment in this facility represents another success story for Burnley and the UK manufacturing industry overall.”

Trebor Developments LLP Selected for Burnley’s Vision Park Following a detailed selection process, Burnley Council is delighted to announce that Trebor Developments LLP have been selected as the development partner for the 2 hectare ‘Burnley Vision Park’ in Burnley’s Knowledge Quarter. Trebor Developments, a privately owned partnership, have an excellent track record of delivering quality developments throughout the UK. They will be working with the Council to develop the brownfield Vision Park site adjacent to Burnley’s £84 million university and college campus, alongside project partners UCLan, Burnley College and the Homes and Communities Agency. Trebor Developments are looking to create a high quality business park with a focus on attracting growing advanced engineering, manufacturing and digital industries. Council Leader, Mark Townsend, said: “I’m delighted we have secured a successful national developer to take forward the Vision Park site. They are delivering niche business parks across the UK, including the successful Malvern Hills Science Park, so I’m confident they’ll deliver an attractive business park to attract new businesses to Burnley. “The Vision Park will provide a unique offer to advanced manufacturing and digital industries who can tap into the advanced research and development, and the unrivalled manufacturing and robotic technologies from the adjacent Knowledge Quarter education campus.” Burnley Council’s Chief Executive, Steve

Global Quality Award for TRW Burnley Top bosses from TRW Automotive, a global leader in the automotive sector, flew from Germany to the UK last month and travelled to Burnley to present TRW Burnley with the highest award for excellence across the worldwide TRW group. Burnley’s plant beat off competition from over 12 worldwide plants in the Body Controls Systems Division, including sister plants in the Czech Republic and Mexico, to secure the top award. The Global Quality Award was presented to Burnley’s Operations Director, John Kennedy, at a special event held at the Eastern Avenue plant to unveil the Quality Tower! The award was presented by Mr Ralf Jeskulke, Vice President of TRW Global Control Systems and Mr Krzystof Janiga, the Group Global Quality Director. Mr Janiga gave a short presentation on the critical importance of quality to the future of the business and in particular to drive continuous improvement in all areas of customer and consumer satisfaction. Receiving the award, Mr Kennedy said: “This is something Burnley can be really proud of. Last year we were awarded the Global award for Health & Safety and Environmental Excellence with the most consistent performance of any of the 185

£3.3 million Gateway Transformation Phase III Public Square, Public Realm and Highway Improvements are underway in the Weavers’ Triangle ‘On the Banks’. The third phase of works transforming the Weavers’ Triangle ‘On the Banks’ will include; a £1.3 million public square at Sandygate and a £2 million highway and public realm improvement scheme, to create a welcoming gateway and new public spaces. The high quality public realm and highway works will enhance the huge investment underway by Barnfield Investment Properties Limited to transform the Weavers’ Triangle into a vibrant and unique ‘destination’ for business, living, leisure and education, by creating an impressive public square, distinctive public areas, and improvements to traffic and pedestrian flow around the area. Priority for pedestrian access into and

around the Weavers’ Triangle from the town centre and the new Manchester Road Station will be created by providing wider pavements and a new modern footbridge across the canal. Partners Burnley Council, Barnfield Construction and Lancashire County Council will be delivering the works, with Barnfield transforming Sandygate Square and the county council delivering the highway and public realm works. The works are being funded from the Regional Growth Fund, European Regional Development Fund and Lancashire County Council. The public realm works will create a contemporary feel in and around the Weavers’ Triangle with granite pavements, street furniture and feature lighting along Trafalgar Street. The highway improvements will greatly improve the traffic flow around the Weavers’ Triangle.

Sandygate Square will become the centrepiece of the On the Banks development and will include:

HRH The Duke of York, KG gifted gold tees at the opening of Burnley’s UTC Burnley’s University Technical College (UTC), providing young people with vital engineering and construction skills, was officially opened by HRH The Duke of York, KG in March. HRH toured the UTC, meeting staff and learners before unveiling a plaque to mark the opening and being presented with a set of brass golf tees made by the learners in the engineering workshop at the UTC. In a speech to guests, The Duke said: “The project here at University Technical College is providing the young people with excellent education and training. “I think the opportunities that the young students have here are outstanding and I would encourage more people to go out to talk to friends and colleagues and suggest this as a new learning avenue for them. I would also encourage parents to research the opportunities for students here at the UTC and to come and see in action what is going on. “The other thing that is important for prospective students and parents to realise

£20m expansion to Warburton’s Burnley operation Warburtons, the family bakery, has been given the green light for a £20m expansion to its Burnley operation. The Bolton firm already has a site on Billington Road where it employs 250 staff. The additional facility will handle products such wraps and

Sandwich Thins, and will create 60 jobs. Work has begun on construction with a view to completion in January 2015. Neil Campbell, Warburtons managing director, said: “This is an exciting time for the business and underlines our continued

commitment to future growth. “We recognise that consumer needs and tastes are changing and we must ensure we are fit to meet their needs, now and into the future. As a family business, we are able to take decisions for the long term and we’re looking forward

to expanding our presence in Burnley – a town which we have been a part of for over 30 years.” The plant will be able to produce an average of 5,500 products per hour. There are similar plants in Bristol and Bolton.

Burnley College and Themis are taking progressive action to address the local skills shortages within Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing. The College is expanding its existing Centre of Engineering Excellence and Construction Learning and Training Centre in a significant growth project which will see a +95% increased site space. The build is a significant investment from the College to support Advanced Manufacturing employers and an opportunity to put Pennine Lancashire at the forefront of industry innovation and development. The aim of the facility is to

address the skills shortages by providing industry specific, advanced training, developed in parallel with the rapid pace of technological development within Advanced Manufacturing. Burnley College and Themis have seen year-on-year increased demand for engineering learning and training as employers struggle to fill the gaps in their existing workforce and the requirement for new, skilled recruits. Local employers have been instrumental in the project’s development and continue to consult with the College as the development takes shape. This partnership has ensured the build is suitably equipped

for employer needs in a rapidly developing modern workplace. Burnley student is ‘star of the show’ in London Leading members of the business and education world were captivated by Hameldon Community College Student, Keaton Newcombe Dickson at a prestigious London-based business event. Keaton was invited to speak at Business in the Community’s National Business Class Symposium at Goldman Sachs in London following his outstanding performance in a local business/education initiative run by VEKA and its Business Class partner school Hameldon Community College. A number of mini apprenticeships were created at VEKA, job adverts were written and students were invited to apply formally for the roles. Interviews were then carried out and five students selected for the respective roles. Over the course of the following six weeks, students carried out their apprenticeship projects and ended with a judged presentation.

VEKA’s Head of HR, Gabriela Hammond said: “All the students that took part were a credit to the school, they learnt so much from the project, from what to put in a CV, to interview practice and what happens in a business environment. “Keaton worked in the Finance Team and stood out throughout the programme. Everyone here at VEKA was delighted when he was asked to attend the symposium, we knew he would shine but even we had no idea just how much! Being there on the day to watch him interact with such esteemed guests was brilliant to see. News Leading online fashion firm to double its growth in Burnley A top online fashion retailer could be set to bring 350 new jobs to Burnley under multi-million pound expansion plans. Boohoo.com bosses want to double the size of their Burnley headquarters with a £5m. new extension at Heasandford Industrial Estate. The booming fashion firm already employs more than 400 staff in the town at the existing warehouse and distribution centre on Widow Hill Road. But the huge expansion

proposals could mean hundreds of new jobs created in the town if plans are given the green light. Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle, who recently toured Boohoo’s Burnley base with bosses, believes it would be a huge boost to the local economy. He said: “It is brilliant news for Burnley. It is a major investment in the town. The firm came to Burnley five years ago with just 40 staff and now they employ around 425 people.

“By 2015 they want to more than double their workforce to more than 1,000 staff. The bosses say the workforce in Burnley is superb, committed and work hard – they run two shifts seven days a week. They are really happy with what is going on in Burnley – they are phenomenally busy. It is a real success story in the town.” The 12,379sqm extension would see a four-storey amenity block, service yard and a new distribution warehouse for the

growing online retail business. A full planning application has been submitted to Burnley Council and if granted the site could be open by the middle of next year. A statement from developers said: “The site’s development will make a valuable contribution to the economy of the borough.The proposed development, once fully operational will add a further circa 350 jobs to the local economy. The proposal is needed in order to support the growing online retail business.”

Business leaders say the town’s profile will soar as big matches are beamed around the world, with financial experts Deloitte estimating promotion to the world’s richest league being worth £120 million to the football club with the town’s businesses set to reap the rewards. Burnley Council’s Chief Executive, Steve Rumbelow said: “There is definitely a link between the town’s fortunes and the club’s success. It is a massive achievement for the club and what it means in pounds and pence for Burnley you can’t say exactly, but it’s probably worth tens of millions. “Burnley will be televised to millions of people around the world which will help get our name recognised for all the

Businesses in Burnley have said they are well placed to benefit from the higher profile that Burnley FC’s promotion to the Premier League will bring. That was the view at Insider's Doing Business in Burnley breakfast, which attracted a bumper crowd of 120 people. Burnley’s promotion to the top tier of English football is worth an estimated £120m to the football club but businesses in the town have been urged to take advantage of the increased exposure it will generate. Neil Hart, head of community at Burnley FC in the Community, said: "The promotion celebration is over. The focus now is on planning for the Premier League. The vision of the club is we want as many local businesses to join us on this journey." Burnley was recently awarded the title of 'Most Enterprising Area in Britain' and Steve Rumbelow, Chief Executive of Burnley Council said “It is the latest in a long list of great news story for Burnley”. "The attention that the town is getting is positive," he said. "We're getting a lot of interest from businesses outside the town. Although we're a manufacturing town there's a diversity of businesses here." Tim Webber is the Chairman and Managing Director of Barnfield Construction Group which employs 250 people and has a turnover of £60m. He said: "We have been around for 37 years. In our sector the mood is very buoyant. By May we had a full order book until the end of the year. "We've had five or six years of recession and people now feel confident about bringing these projects forward. Burnley winning the title of 'Most Enterprising Area in Britain' and promotion to the Premier League has created a real feel-good factor." David Grant is the Managing Director of Moorhouse's Brewery, which marks its 150th anniversary in Burnley in 2015. It employs 32 staff and has a turnover of £5.5m. "There's a feel-good factor around although it's too early to talk about a full recovery," he said. He also welcomed HS2: "I think it's great. We're regularly in London and the quicker I can get there the better. I think the image of Burnley and Pennine Lancashire is improving tremendously. It's a ripple effect. There are several nightclubs and bars, for edgier entertainment I can catch the bus to Manchester. Lancashire County Council’s Rosebud Fund has provided £172,000 while The North West Fund for Venture Capital has invested £688,000. Both funds are managed by Enterprise Ventures. The North West Fund for Venture Capital is part of The £155m North West Fund and is financed jointly by the European Regional Development Fund and the European Investment Bank. Using the system being developed by FDM Digital Solutions, hospitals will be able to scan a patient’s foot shape and email it to the company, which will then print and deliver insoles to the exact specification within as little as 48 hours. The process will replace the traditional hand-made techniques and could revolutionise the way the NHS buys orthotics and other products. FDM, together with its partners East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Salford, have already won grants totalling almost £1m from the Technology Strategy Board and EPSRC to help them develop the supply chain. Burnley ‘leading way’ on economy says business minister Delegation flies flag for Burnley businesses Burnley’s business and political leaders embarked on a ‘trade mission’ to London earlier this year in a bid to attract further investment. A delegation, including representatives from almost 30 employers from the borough, met Business Minister Michael Fallon at a private event in Westminster. The networking event was held at The Royal Society’s headquarters in Carlton House Terrace, in the shadow of Buckingham Palace. It was attended by numerous business leaders from the capital and Alexandra Jones, Chief Executive of the Centre for Cities think tank. Big name firms such as AMS Neve, VEKA and BCW Engineering

were all present at the event, which was hosted by BBC’s The One Show reporter, Tony Livesey. Burnley Council’s Chief Executive, Steve Rumbelow said: “It was about promoting Burnley and Lancashire to ministers and shareholders that we don’t normally see up north. “With the support of the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership and Marketing Lancashire, we structured it like the Prime Minister would for a trade mission abroad.
