PLACES TO LEARN ABOUT BURNLEY’S FASCINATING PAST

Find out about Burnley’s fascinating history in the town’s stately homes, museums and unique visitor centres. 34

Towneley Hall and the famous people who lived there What does a renowned scientist, the last man to be hanged, drawn and quartered in Britain, and an antiques collector have in common? They all lived at the historic Towneley Hall, home to the Towneley family for almost 500 years and the jewel in Burnley’s cultural crown. Visitors to the hall will uncover fascinating stories about Towneley family members and the history of the hall. Hear about science boffin Richard Towneley, who was a pioneer of meteorology and co-founded the Greenwich Observatory, and Charles Towneley, whose collection of artefacts led to a gallery at the British Museum named after him. The eeriest story of the Grade I listed building, set in the award-winning Towneley Park, is perhaps that of Francis Towneley. Executed for high treason for his role in the Jacobite rebellion in 1745, his head was placed on a pike at London’s Temple Bar before eventually being stolen and returned to Towneley Hall, where it was hidden behind a secret panel in the chapel for over 200 years. Guided tours runs throughout the year, to book a place on a tour contact Towneley Hall on 01282 477130 or email kdarwen@burnley.gov.uk. http://towneley.org.uk/ - Check website for opening times.

Gawthorpe Hall

Gawthorpe Hall is a stunning structure with a rich history. It is sometimes referred to as the ‘Downton of the North’. Although not as grand, Gawthorpe was redesigned by Sir Charles Barry (who also redesigned Highclere Castle, the filming location for ITV’s Downton Abbey). Why not take a leisurely stroll around the formal gardens with views of the river, or perhaps a short ramble through the woodland to enjoy the wildlife. Gawthorpe Textile Collection - The Gawthorpe Textile Collection showcases the most extraordinary and intricate needlework, lace and costume amassed by Rachel Kay Shuttleworth as well as contemporary pieces from talented artists across the region. The team regularly host incredible events that support the collection. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/gawthorpe-hall - Check website for opening times.

EXPLORE

THE OUTDOORS

Burnley has a great reputation for its stunning countryside and award-winning parks, gardens and green spaces. Did you know Burnley is 80% rural and has more parkland per head of population than anywhere else in the UK? You are never too far from green spaces, the stunning countryside surrounding the town, and some great country pubs servicing great homemade food. 38

39

Walks that end near a cracking pub

After a ramble in the countryside there’s nothing better than ending up at a cracking country pub serving good pub grub and real ales. Here are a couple of good walks to revive your soul with a great pub on route!

Singing Ringing Tree Walk

A walk where you can set off from the Victoria Mill Campus, takes you up onto the moors to view this stunning panopticon Singing Ringing Tree (named one of the UK’s top landmarks) and the 360 degree vistas across Pennine Lancashire. Designed by Tonkin Liu, Burnley’s Panopticon, ‘Singing Ringing Tree’, is a unique musical sculpture which overlooks Burnley from its position high above the town on Crown Point. Constructed from pipes of galvanised steel stacked in layers, this Panopticon takes the form of a tree bending to the winds and harnesses the energy of those winds to produce a low, tuneful song. In June 2007, Singing Ringing Tree was named winner of a National Award for architectural excellence by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). ‘Singing Ringing Tree’ is close to the Dunnockshaw Millennium Wood, part of the Forest of Burnley reforestation 40

programme, and links to the Pennine Bridleway and local walking routes. Crown Point Rd, Burnley BB11 3QZ

The pub near the end As you walk through the door of The New Waggoners, you will be greeted with a warm welcome, a selection of real ales and wines, and a deliciously mouthwatering menu. The New Waggoners is a free house with a quality selection of cask ales to compliment a varied drinks selection. Their cosy bar area is the perfect place to relax in before and after your meal, especially on a cold day when they light their open fire!

Hurstwood village, reservoir and woodland Hurstwood is a delightful village of great charm, steeped in history and character. It contains a number of very old attractive buildings, including Hurstwood Hall built by Barnard Towneley in 1579, Spenser’s cottage, reputed to have been the home from 1576 – 1579 of Edmund Spenser the Elizabethan poet; and Tattersall’s Barn, possible the oldest building in the village. Hurstwood is excellent for outdoor enthusiasts with several walks leading from the village up to the reservoirs and across the moors. From here walks will take you up onto Worsthorne Moor – a great spot for bird watchers – and to the limestone hushings at Shedden Clough. The hushings were once an area where limestone was extracted in the 17th and 18th centuries by using water to wash the limstone from the rocks left by the ice age, today the lunar landscape that remains is a fascinating reminder of a largely forgotten industry.

If you prefer cycling then the new mountain bike route through the woodland at Hurstwood provides thrill seekers with a dedicated facility in an area where they were already improvising their own routes. Postcode BB10 3LG

The pub near the end Set in the rural village of Worsthorne the Crooked Billet is a Traditional Freehouse country pub serving the best cask ales. Winner of the Burnley Area ‘Pub of the Year’ Award from CAMRA for 2013.The Crooked Billet is a place to socialise and make new friends and welcomes walkers (& dogs) cyclists and everyone else just passing through. The pub is Cask Marque accredited and hosts various Camra social events.Customers travel from far and wide to sample the excellent range of real ales, especially from our local Worsthorne Brewery – they are also renowned for their delicious pie and peas.

Pendle Hill

One of the most famous walks you can do in the area is Pendle Hill. Most famous for its links to the now notorious witch trials of 1612, Pendle Hill and its surrounding towns and villages are a truly bewitching area of Lancashire. Its summit is 557 metres (1,827 ft) above mean sea level, just 51 metres short of being a mountain but has a huge presence. History and legend has woven a spell over Pendle. Pendle Hill rises above this ancient hunting ground, once the home of wolves and wild boar and to this day dotted with

tiny hamlets and farms. It is still an untamed place, full of mystery and infamous as the home of the Pendle Witches who were tried and executed for witchcraft in 1612. The landscape, carved out by man and by nature, welcomes walkers and countryside enthusiasts. Long distance walks, such as the 43-mile Pendle Way and parts of the Bronte Way, combine history with stunning scenery, with plenty of country inns and farmhouses to provide most congenial rest and refreshment along the way.

The Pubs at the end A walk up Pendle can in end the lovely village of Barley which has two gre at country pubs service some tasty country fayre. Barley Mow, Barley Village, The Bullion, Burnley BB12 9JX Pendle Inn, Barley Lane, Barley, Burnley, Lancs, BB12 9JX 42

Cliviger Gorge & The Ram Inn

Cliviger Gorge is a steep-sided valley that follows the line of a geological fault and was shaped by glacial erosion during the last ice age – a stunning valley walk. Set off from the village of Cliviger on the outskirts of Burnley and finish with a drink and a nibble in the Ram Inn, a picture-postcard village pub with wooden floors, an eclectic mix of upholstery in diverse seating areas, candlelight and real fires tick all the right boxes if you’re looking to chill out in a glorious setting. .

The Pub at the end The Ram Inn, 399 Burnley Road, Cliviger Burnley, BB10 4SU

Canal Walk/Cycle to Reedley Marina and the Kingfisher Waterside Bistro

Head East along the canal - you can walk or cycle along the canal from Burnley Town Centre / or hop straight on the canal from Sandygate Square on the Victoria Mill campus. The walk to the marina is approximately 3.5 miles. Rest your legs before the return journey at The Kingfisher Waterside Bistro which sits on the canal on the outskirts of Burnley in the picturesque setting next to the stunning Reedley Mariner. Enjoy a casual drink overlooking the water, in the perfect place to watch the canal boats drift by against the picturesque backdrop of the famous Pendle Hill.
