Surge in demand for co-working space at The Landmark The Landmark in #BrilliantBurnley is a business club and co working space in the centre of town. They have expanded their team due to a large number of organisations joining its thriving business community. As the demand for flexible workspaces and co working hubs increases, The Landmark has bolstered its guest services department by taking on a customer services professional from the hospitality sector, Malea Vernon. Malea will be looking after all the members of the growing business community and working as a brand ambassador promoting The Landmark by liaising with potential new members. Increasing coronavirus restrictions have caused offices to close up and down the country with staff having to work from home. While these measures are necessary
4
to control the virus, many have found it challenging to maintain productivity amid the distractions of working in a domestic setting. The strong demand is also attributed to a sharp rise in entrepreneurial activity as a result of covid related redundancies. Liz Wilkinson, General Manager at The Landmark, commented: “We’re offering a covid safe workspace for businesses and individuals looking for an alternative to the traditional office, or home working. The uptake has been astonishing. We’ve had in increase in demand of over 400%, and more businesses are joining all the time.” Joining The Landmark business club comes with a host of benefits. Club members are able to use ultrafast internet connections throughout the building. There are private offices, meeting
rooms, and COVID safe communal areas designed to encourage networking. The Landmark is based in the iconic former home of Burnley Grammar School, an impressive grade 2 listed building on School Lane, central Burnley. Record-breaking figures for Low Carbon Energy Burnley-based Low Carbon Energy are witnessing first-hand how businesses are challenging the ‘green-recovery’ plans. The award-winning multi-service renewable energy company is seeing a large increase in businesses wanting to include clean energy in their sustainability plans going forward, in particular their solar panel solutions. “It has been a very interesting time for us,” explains Gerard Ennis, managing director. “On the back of a record breaking period, we are currently ahead of target for this financial year, even after a twelve week lockdown. Just last week, the team confirmed four new solar panel projects for a private
hospital, a car repair company, an IT distribution company and a water treatment plant. It is definitely an exciting time for the renewable energy sector and one we should all be embracing.” The new projects in the pipeline, totalling to 400KW of solar panels, will see Low Carbon Energy help businesses to generate approx. 360,000 KWh a year of green energy at a fixed price of less than 3p for the next twenty-five years. This will save over 1,428 tonnes of carbon emissions annually with an average return on investment in excess of 20%. “As restrictions continue to ease in many parts of the UK, and in other countries
across the world, I urge organisations not to undo one of the few positive sideeffects of this devastating pandemic – namely, the relief it has provided for the environment. Right now we have a unique opportunity almost unmatched in modern history, to reshape our society in terms of the way we consume energy, building a fairer, cleaner and more resilient economy.” “We have recently welcomed a new team member to the business, Danny Loftus. Danny joined us during the lockdown period as an additional project manager to help us with the increased demand for our
solutions. All of us here at Low Carbon Energy are working tirelessly to help as many businesses as possible discover the benefits of renewable energy, and with the grants currently available, there has never been a better time to make the move over to more sustainable business model.”

What More UK invested
£20 million Burnley based housewares manufacturer and exporter, What More UK, has invested £20million on a number of new projects including 13 new injection moulding machines. What More UK is the British firm behind the popular housewares brand Wham. Leaders of this successful organisation are following a strategy of continuous investment, which has proven to be a very smart decision. This latest investment has seen them grow their manufacturing capacity with the purchase of 13 injection moulding machines. The
6
company plans to upgrade or replace every machine they own within four years. The new machines, five of which have already arrived and been installed at their Altham site, are specifically designed to meet the needs of the organisation. If current affairs have taught us anything, it’s that the world can change dramatically at a moment’s notice. 6 months, even 6 weeks, is a very long time during a global health crisis. The business environment can turn upside down, seemingly overnight. This latest investment will help position What More to
deal with the situation. When the pandemic struck, What More didn’t batten down the hatches. They did the opposite, increasing their investments and focusing on resilience and agility. Tony Grimshaw OBE, Director at What More UK, explains: “What More UK is not the sort of company to sit still. In business we deal with crises every day and the worst thing you can do is ignore it. Putting money back into the firm means we’ll be stronger in the future. These new machines will give us the ability to respond to changes as and when they occur.”
This type of investment is one of the reasons behind What More’s success. It enables them to satisfy customer requirements in lightning speed. What More UK products are available in all major UK supermarkets, 1600 independent retailers in the UK, and 75 other countries around the world. They produce housewares of all kinds, including storage boxes, around-the-sink items, bakeware and cookware. They also produce products for the garden like planters and troughs. How one Burnley business made a year’s turnover in one month Design, copy and print business CMYK moved to Vision Park last year to accommodate their growth due to an increase in print demand. Speaking exclusively to Burnley.co.uk, Managing Director Lewis Pearce explained that the usual annual turnover was reached last June alone – an impressive feat. The Burnley business has seen huge demand during the COVID-19 crisis, particularly for its social distancing signage, floor markers, stickers and other related products. “When lockdown was announced last March, we were fortunate to be allowed to continue to trade as we are classed as manufacturing. At first, we took the quieter period at the start to really work on our marketing, especially on our website and SEO,” Mr Pearce explained. And the hard work paid off. CMYK found itself in the top spot on Google’s rankings for search terms such as “social distancing stickers” and, in his words, “things just then exploded”. Well-known establishments such as BBC, ITV, the Ministry of Defence and Oxfordshire
NHS all placed significant orders to ensure their premises complied with the new social
So why does he favour Burnley for his business?
distancing guidelines. Mr Pearce said his biggest order so far has come from West Yorkshire Fire Service. CMYK provided every sticker, sign and poster for all of the fire stations in West Yorkshire. Many of these new customers have also now become regular customers, purchasing other work-related items and equipment now more businesses are returning back to more normal levels of operation. In addition, previous customers who are returning to more usual operations have restarted orders with CMYK. Both factors have contributed to the decision to take unit space at Vision Park. Mr Pearce added: “Vision Park was an obvious choice. It’s just off the motorway and a unit is more practical when taking delivery of the new machinery we have invested in. It’s also more convenient for many of our customers as we can offer an improved parking provision.”
“I’ve grown up in Burnley, it’s part of me. The town itself is on the verge of exploding into something big and great and I think we’ll particularly see this over the next five years. There’s also a large number of young entrepreneurs setting up businesses and there’s a real buzz about it.” 7

Rapid IT create a slice of Google in Padiham Google’s offices are famous for their slides between floors, games rooms, interactive screens and abundance of food and drink for their employees, and one Padiham business is recreating a slice of Google at its 8,500 sq ft building close to Gawthorpe Hall. Rapid IT provides refurbished computer hardware, recycled IT, communications solutions and audio-visual equipment and works closely with schools to promote the cost and environmental benefits of using refurbished equipment. Its founder and MD Jack Bannister said Burnley.co.uk: “We are passionate about speaking to schools about the cost and environmental savings you can make by using refurbished equipment, rather than going out and buying new. One recent fun project was with nearby Shuttleworth College. We
8
gave the pupils a tour then held a competition to see what they could build out of an old computer – it was really interesting to see what they came up with.” Rapid IT has recently undergone a rebrand and knew that it needed to upgrade its building to provide more of a wow factor and improved environment for its employees, visitors and clients. “It’s a very large space and the roof would sometimes leak, which isn’t nice for staff and doesn’t make the best impression on visitors either. Whilst everything scaled back
during COVID-19, we took the opportunity to commence work on modernising the space. We worked with fellow Burnley business The Low Carbon Energy Company to install a 30kw solar roof to become carbon neutral with free electricity,” Mr Bannister said. “I’m also keen to recreate some of the working environment Google has, including living green walls. Our ambition is for the offices to be modern and a fun place to be and work. He was born in Burnley and is passionate about contributing to the town’s growth. Mr Bannister praised the support he’d received from Burnley Borough Council over the past eight years, particularly from the business support team. “The town is heading to a very positive place – it’s becoming a vibrant student town with lots of quality independent bars and restaurants. The early evening economy especially is growing and it’s great to see. “The establishment of Burnley as a university town is great for businesses like us. We have a higher calibre of students we can draw upon. Rapid IT has a variety of roles, from sales to data wiping and production roles to logistics. We currently outsource our marketing, but it would be fantastic if we could have a marketing apprentice alongside that support,” Mr Bannister explained.
UCLan welcomes students to the new student accommodation at Sandygate
Burnley.co.uk got a sneak preview of what the impressive 136-bed student accommodation looked like before it officially welcomed students in Autumn 2020. The modern student accommodation features bright bedrooms with an en-suite, and the students also benefit from a hub, cinema room and study room – not to mention a canalside location and views across to Pendle Hill. The development was a joint venture between Barnfield Investment Properties and Burnley Council, which has now handed over the day-to-day running of the building to UCLan. The new accommodation is an important milestone in the university’s plans to attract 4,000 students to Burnley by 2025.
UCLan’s Michael Ahern, Chief Information and Infrastructure Officer, added: “It’s a really exciting part of the development of the University of Central Lancashire’s Burnley campus. This fantastic new accommodation facility is essential for building a university town which will attract a new generation of talent and enable us to recruit nationally and internationally. “Crucial to our plans has been the first-class support and encouragement we’ve received from the entire Burnley community. By continuing to work together, meeting the existing and emerging skills needs of Burnley and East Lancashire, we can achieve our collective vision of driving prosperity and quality of life for the people of Burnley,
Lancashire and the North West as a whole.” The building wraps around Sandygate square and includes two A3 units, which are being marketed by Trevor Dawson. The students are in a prime location, close to both UCLan campuses at Victoria Mill and Princess Way, as well as the town centre. Kate Ingram, Strategic Head of Economy and Growth at Burnley Council, said: “To have delivered this building in such a short time frame and in such difficult circumstances is extraordinary. It is the first purpose-built student accommodation in the town, and we have deliberately set the bar high and I’m pleased with the results. We have created a great
student experience whilst respecting the historic canal-side setting”. Tim Webber, Managing Director of Barnfield Construction, said “We are absolutely delighted to have delivered the high-quality project on time, despite the worldwide pandemic. “We’re so proud of the hard work and unwavering effort and dedication the team have shown, to deliver what will be a fantastic addition to the projects already achieved, as part of the ongoing On The Banks development.” A huge Burnley welcome to the new UCLan students – we hope you enjoy your time in the town and we look forward to seeing more students move in over the coming months.

Burnley takes Forbes Reinvention and Resilience Report by storm With 11 businesses based in our town recognised. The report details those North West businesses that have innovated and diversified during the COVID-19 situation. The ones in Burnley are: • Velocity Composites • What More UK • Panaz • Ellis’s • CheckedSafe • PM+M Solutions for Business • LPK Facilities Management • Fagan & Whalley • Key Digital • Bellyflop TV • Jay-Care Stairlift and Mobility Almost all these businesses are also Burnley Bondholders. Other businesses that featured that aren’t based in the town, but who are also bondholders, include BCN Group and Businesswise Solutions. That takes the number of Burnley Bondholders included in the top 50 to 12. You can read the full case studies of how Burnley businesses proved innovative and resilient during the global
pandemic at www.burnley.co.uk. Some of case studies include Velocity Composites, who produced PPE for NHS workers. In the first two months alone of lockdown, the aerospace products manufacturer had produced 8,000 face shields and 2,500 fluid protection gowns for the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Ellis’s restaurant on Standish Street launched collection and delivery services, as well as lockdown kits, so people could recreate their favourite meals from home. The profit prevented the business from needing additional finance and plans are in place for a second site. LPK Facilities Management usually provides building maintenance but switched its services to cold fogging decontamination to eliminate bacterial and viral infection on surfaces. Oliver Burton, chief executive officer at Forbes Solicitors, commented: “It’s clear that every facet of the North West business community has been profoundly affected by COVID-19 and the subsequent national lockdown.
“However, what has clearly emerged from our top 50 research is the raft of companies that have used this as an opportunity to rethink their approach and strategy – whether it’s by responding to overnight demand quickly and effectively, coming up with new ways of working to deliver services in an innovative way, or by lowering their risk levels to continue investing in their business through either acquisition or expansion.” Another Burnley case study is Jay-Care Stairlift and Mobility, who changed all sales, no matter how small, to free home delivery. Employees also worked seven days a week for 13 weeks due to an increase in demand, supporting NHS discharge and home support teams across East Lancashire. As a result, the business saw record profit in July and is looking to expand to larger premises. A huge congratulations to all the Burnley Bondholders and businesses who feature in this report, proudly flying the flag for our innovative and resilient town.

Within an hour new VEKA MD
knew just how important Burnley was to the company... The new MD of VEKA UK, Neil Evans, has exclusively spoken to us about his new role at the Burnley-based organisation – and why he’s upping sticks from Newcastle to live in the town. Neil took up the role last December, following current MD Dave Jones announcing his retirement after 26 years at the business. And despite vowing to never leave his home city of Newcastle after moving back there several years ago, he’s been so impressed by VEKA’s dedication to Burnley, he’s making the move to be closer in the new year. “Prior to VEKA, I’ve worked in Glasgow for what is now Aviva and in Fife for Velux. When I moved back to Newcastle, I stared at the Tyne Bridge and told myself I wouldn’t leave my home city again,” he told us. So what made him decide to move to Burnley? “I was headhunted for the Sales Director role at VEKA UK. I’d never been to Burnley before, but when I met Dave, I was hugely impressed by both him, the organisation and
12
their passion for Burnley. Within an hour, I had a sense of how proud they are of Burnley and how important the town is to them and it has since become as important to me.”
Corporate culture is important to Neil
His plans for Burnley
trustworthy, reliable and a safe pair of hands.
Neil brings with him a wealth of experience. He worked at Aviva for around 15 years and admits it was a shock to the system when they outsourced their contact centre, which he managed, to India, resulting in his role being made redundant. However, he took the opportunity to change industries from insurance, and moved to Velux, where he joined as Operations Director. After three years, he was asked to become Sales Director, a role he was first unsure about. “When you’ve done a particular role for so long, you can think you know it all. Becoming Sales Director made me get out of my comfort zone and ask lots of questions and I learnt a lot.” He enjoyed his time at Velux, particularly as it is family owned with strong values.
and he said one of his plans is to build on the already strong culture at VEKA. “At VEKA our customers see us as We will increase our focus on our customers – at the end of the day, they are our ultimate stakeholder. We all get benefit from true longterm partnerships,” he told Burnley.co.uk. Neil is excited to work and support a town that has a well-recognised community spirit and a growing university status. He’s already worked with Burnley FC in the Community for some time, after deciding he wanted to give his time, and not just company sponsorship. He also looks forward to experiencing Burnley Bondholders (of which VEKA is a longstanding member) and everything it entails. “It’s exciting that there are plans for 4,000 university students by 2025. At VEKA, we have technical engineering capabilities, so it’s reassuring that we will have a graduate talent pool we can draw upon.”
CoolKit records bumper year A leading manufacturer of temperature controlled transport solutions closed 2020 with a record high order book. Despite feeling the initial impact of the pandemic, CoolKit in Burnley, enjoyed a bumper year and expects sales to soar further still in 2021. The company has recruited to deal with the surge in order intake and is well prepared to satisfy what is expected be the rebounding market of a post-pandemic era, hopefully as soon as March or April. Rupert Gatty, CoolKit’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “When I think back to the first national lockdown in March last year, there was widespread uncertainty; we were in uncharted waters and responding to ever-changing information. “Orders were postponed and supply chains dried up, but we had a duty to convert vehicles essential to the safe delivery of pharmaceutical products and foodstuffs to
frontline organisations across the UK and so we pressed on.” Such customers included FareShare, a national organisation delivering vital food supplies to frontline charities across the UK, providing a lifeline to those most at risk, including children and families and those who are sick and self-isolating. As the first lockdown lifted and CoolKit acclimatised to working within tiered restrictions, business began to pick up further, its products proving especially popular among LCV rental companies and large fleet operators. Rupert said: “These customers recognised the beneficial aspects of the products - which aim to optimise refrigerated fleet productivity whilst minimising total cost of ownership. “In addition, customers were attracted by the comfort of CoolKit’s unrivalled production capacity, which is larger than that of any other refrigerated
van converter in the UK. “The company sustained output throughout the first lockdown and plans to do so throughout the latest lockdown.” 2020 also saw substantial investment in equipment and a number of new key appointments for the business, including new managerial positions in quality assurance, sales, aftersales, logistics and production planning roles. Rupert added: “Over and above that, there is more investment in R&D planned than ever before to deliver further innovations of the kind that have just won CoolKit
the coveted What Van? 2021 Award for Innovation. “Key to the win was our ability to eliminate the traditional timber element of refrigerated vehicles from our regular conversions, which demonstrates both our commitment to reducing deforestation whilst simultaneously enhancing fleet productivity by reducing unladen vehicle mass.” “We’re really proud of what we have achieved amid challenging times and look forward to a prosperous 2021 as we hopefully wave goodbye to the virus.”

after investing more than £100,000 in the business during the past six months, it is on course to hit seven-figure sales levels for the first time, having seen turnover soar by 50% in the past quarter. This is despite having to move to remote working during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. Dave Walker, Managing Director, said: “It’s been a very difficult six months for everyone, employers and staff alike. “Thankfully, we were able to respond early to make the changes that were vital to ensure the business has remained buoyant and successful. “We have been agile in our response to our customers and forged new relationships with businesses by listening to their needs and responding appropriately. “It has led to some fantastic new clients.” He added: “Circumstances have led us to make some pretty big changes, like establishing remote working for all our team, but our ethos and strong work ethic
has remained – and is positively reflected in our books. “In this last quarter we hit 50% growth compared to the same time last year, mainly thanks to existing clients bringing us new business, as well as some new accounts.” Existing, long-standing clients including Ansell Lighting, Calico and IT recycling company Tier 1, have continued to work closely with Dave and his team of software developers. The firm’s ability to adapt to the changing landscape of the UK as the COVID-19 pandemic spread was illustrated when long-standing client Calico and Burnley Council turned to +24 for help. Burnley Together is a new partnership between Calico, Burnley Council and other agencies, to urgently address issues created by the pandemic – specifically, where to turn to for help.
Lancashire Textiles hits BBC headlines for diversification into face mask production Lancashire Textiles switched to producing face masks in 2020, reacting to the national requirement to wear face coverings early in the pandemic. The business featured on the BBC news for their innovative diversification. Based on Howsin Street, Lancashire Textiles have been manufacturing duvets, pillows and mattresses in Burnley
since 2001. However, the pandemic crisis has created an unprecedented demand for face coverings, which the company has been in an excellent position to produce. Sales manager Steve Aspey said: “Some of our production has been switched to face masks and wipe-clean only products, which we also supplied during the Ebola outbreak to help
bolster levels of production. “This is something we can do due to the flexible nature of our manufacturing and the expertise of our workforce.” The masks are of a higher quality and come in more colourful designs than standard medical masks. Recycle IT supports local communities as lockdowns saw demand for laptops soar Recycle IT has been supporting vulnerable people and charities to get online, after COVID-19 lockdowns saw demand for laptops soar. The Manchester Road company recently relocated from the Ribble Valley to Burnley, safeguarding 22 jobs. It chose our town because when the business looked at where it wanted to relocate, “we were drawn to Burnley’s great regeneration programme and the entrepreneurial spirit,” Recycle IT told us.” Business Development Manager at Recycle IT, Carl Greenwood, said: “Last year was one of our busiest years and a big reason for that was the COVID-19 lockdowns. Businesses and individuals who hadn’t before needed to be equipped with desktops, monitors and laptops suddenly needed affordable kit, and fast.
“We have been providing an average of 5,000 laptops a month during the pandemic to schools, NHS and frontline workers, as well as to businesses who required their staff to work from home.” Businesses don’t need to place large orders either; Recycle IT serves customers, whether they require one laptop or 300. And whilst business has been strong, Recycle IT is also committed to helping the community, particularly vulnerable individuals and charities. In the past year, the company has donated £15,000 worth of equipment to football clubs, local charities and vulnerable members of the community. One such recipient was Bancroft House in Burnley. Bancroft House is a support centre for former armed forces. It is ran by Healthier Heroes, a charity set up by Burnley
veteran Andrew Powell, who recently told Burnley.co.uk about the mental health and addiction challenges that former armed forces can struggle with. Recycle IT is confident about its future in Burnley. It has made capital investments and improvements to its facility of more than £1 million, has invested more than £100,000 to set up an inhouse printing department and continues to reinvest into its fleet. It now has six trucks operating across the UK on a daily basis. Mr Greenwood said: “The laptops we provide are grade A, fully refurbished to Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher Standards and we are ADISA, ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO27001 accredited. This means end users and businesses who sell their old equipment to us can have complete peace of mind that the equipment meets stringent security standards.
All the work is done in Burnley too and the laptops can be purchased for up to 50 per cent cheaper than the big high street and online brands. This has been a real benefit to those schools, businesses and other organisations who suddenly needed to get their hands on a lot of high-quality equipment.” There are obviously the environmental benefits too to refurbishing old equipment and Recycle IT are confident that they can continue to grow in Burnley and serve the local community and beyond evenmore. “Over the next 12 months, we will be looking to turnover and break the £5 million barrier, and grow and continue to enhance our workforce to create more jobs in Burnley, as well as offer our services to more business within the area,” Mr Greenwood explained.

Boohoo’s purchase of the Debenhams brand means further investment in Burnley Boohoo has a huge presence in Burnley with its distribution warhouses and its customer contact centre on the Heasandford Business Park. The buyout of the Debenhams brand will lead to further Boohoo investment in the town. Boohoo have bought and renovated two huge empty premises (one formerly M&S Print and one the former TRW factory) to accommodate the new brands including Karen Millen clothing stock and other leading brands. This transaction will allow a new Debenhams-branded business to emerge under strong new ownership, including an online operation and the opportunity to secure an international franchise network that will operate under licence using the Debenhams name, Boohoo said it was a

“transformational deal” and a “huge step”. Boohoo has already bought a number of High Street brands out of administration. It snapped up Oasis, Coast and Karen Millen, but not the associated stores. Its executive chairman, Mahmud Kamani, said: “This is a transformational deal for the group, which allows us to capture the fantastic opportunity as ecommerce continues to grow. Our ambition is to create the UK’s largest marketplace. “Our acquisition of the Debenhams brand is strategically significant as it represents a huge step which accelerates our ambition to be a leader, not just in fashion ecommerce, but in new categories including beauty, sport and homeware.” Boohoo, with its customer service office and distribution
warehouses in Burnley, said Debenhams was expected to
relaunch on Boohoo’s web platform later this year.
WHY BURNLEY IS SUCH A GOOD FIT New Burnley Football Club chairman Alan Pace has given his full backing to the work of manager Sean Dyche and outlined his thoughts on bringing a positive future to Turf Moor. Pace, managing partner of new club owners ALK Capital, held his first virtual media conference since the successful takeover of the Clarets which saw the American replace Mike Garlick as chairman. In a wide-ranging set of interviews, Pace made clear the new board’s support for Dyche and their plans to back the Burnley manager in the January transfer window. And he also explained the appeal for investing in Burnley as a member of the Premier League, which he described as the greatest sports’ league in the world with the worldwide appeal to match. “Burnley fit a number of things we felt were important to us long-term; primarily looking at the passion, the operating structure, the opportunity for growth and
the ability for us to have an impact as a management team and an organisation,” said Pace. “When we looked around at various clubs, one of the things that stood out was the position of this club in this community is unbelievable, the way it has brought it together, the way it’s at the centre of the community. “Also, the longevity of the manager, the ability of him, specifically, to have punched well above his weight, as far as the team is concerned, and the financial stability of the club and the way it’s been run all led us to the place we have come to, which we thought was a great opportunity. “We think there are some building blocks here we can actually work with. “It’s really important to us to see there is a very solid, historical
relationship between fans, community, club. “Where you sit in the country and the passion of the game in this part of the country; it’s not a corporate environment, it’s not a tourism environment. It’s very much ‘live, breathe, die Burnley football’.” Pace – who has set up a family base in the Ribble Valley – will split his time between offices in New York and London and Turf Moor. He will be ‘hands-on’ in looking to drive the Clarets forward and expects 80 per cent of his time to be spent at the football club. He has held his first talks with Dyche and wants the Clarets’ boss to be part of the long-term plans, with the initial focus on January transfer targets to try and build on a superb run of form which lifted Burnley clear of the Premier League’s bottom three.
“We are very big fans,” added the chairman. “We like consistency, we like longevity and we see what an amazing manager he is, and a leader. Leadership is really important to us. “He does have some things he’s looking at. We’re supportive of what he’s looking at. “If he wants to go forward on the things he wants to do we’ll be there and support what he needs to have happen. “The prudence here is being able to move swiftly and support what needs to be done. “I would expect we’d be thoughtful in the process because that’s what Sean has always done. “We will be very supportive of making sure he can achieve his goals. I don’t expect Sean to be frustrated.”

Cube HR scoop two special awards Burnley Bondholder and growing Burnley HR business, Cube HR, scooped one of the three BIBA’s that were awarded late last year for the amount of local businesses that they helped free of charge during the pandemic, as well as an HIVE In It Together Award. Cube scooped the awards for helping over 60 local
businesses with free support during the pandemic and they continue to offer free advice for businesses that need their help. Their ethos is the more businesses they can help survive, the more businesses they will have to work with moving forward as they want to see the local community thrive. Despite doing this and continuing to offer their services for free, they have seen a 110% increase in turnover from end of 2019 to end of 2020 and they have just taken on a new full time staff member as they continue to grow, signing up a further 15 clients in the first two weeks of 2021. Claire Thwaite, the CUBE HR human resources manager was awarded the title of Employee Hero at the BIBA Heroes Awards. Claire secured the award thanks to the work she has done keeping track of government updates since the start of the pandemic and supporting the company’s clients.
This dovetailed well with the company’s focus, providing HR support and general for smaller businesses. Claire said: “I’m delighted to have won this award; there has been so much mis-information and confusion for businesses and I did what I thought was the right thing for so many businesspeople feeling the effects of the pandemic. I’m very grateful for Lisa’s nomination and thankful to The Biba’s for the recognition.” The BIBAs are a series of awards set up by East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce aimed at recognising the innovation, commitment and community spirit shown by Lancashire businesses. This year has given particular attention to those who have risen to the occasion when faced with challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic. Claire’s efforts in this regard have included introducing Monday Mode video sessions offering tips on topics such as
‘how to do a redundancy’ via zoom, running Wednesday Wisdom sessions, answering topical HR questions from the previous week and organising webinars. She was nominated for the award by her boss Lisa Sourbutts. Lisa said: “Having captured the necessary information, she would then put it in a format that was easy to understand, together with any actions needed and get this out to all of our clients the same day. “Every time there were updates as to social distancing, shielding, furlough and the CJRS she did the same. No one asked her to do this; she just took it upon herself to ensure our clients were well informed as quickly as possible. “We have received amazing feedback from our clients about this, saying that they could not believe how quickly we were updating them.”

Planning Application gives green light for Ring Stones to begin work on land at Sycamore Avenue Planning permission has been granted for Ring Stones Maintenance and Construction, part of The Calico Group, to commence work on a £5m redevelopment project in Burnley. This will enable the creation of 22 two and three bed houses and 12 apartments. The area, based on Sycamore Avenue, Gannow, has laid derelict for a number of years and had been branded an eyesore by locals, while also attracting bouts of anti-social behaviour. The development will create a new neighbourhood and offer affordable quality homes for rent in a desirable area. In redeveloping this site, which will benefit the wider local community, Ring Stones are looking to create energy efficient homes for the future using ethical and
environmental standards of working. Ring Stones pride themselves on supporting local suppliers and creating employment opportunities for both existing experienced construction workers and apprentices. In addition, Ring Stones will be providing training opportunities specifically for young people through the Government Kickstart Scheme. James Macaree, Managing Director of Ring Stones, said, “This project is an
exciting and rewarding venture for everyone involved. Not only are we set to rejuvenate an area of Burnley which has long needed attention, we are also going to be doing it in a way that benefits the community by keeping everything as local as possible – from the workforce to supplies.”Details around the progress of this development will be announced in the coming months.

News Pioneering collaboration shapes future workforce Burnley College has earned a place in the finals of the Association of Colleges’ prestigious national Beacon Awards for its innovative work with employers to help create the skilled, motivated and innovative workforce of tomorrow and boost the region’s economy. This month, representatives from Safran Nacelles Ltd, Veka plc, Paradigm Precision Ltd, BCW Manufacturing Group Ltd and Hycrome Europe Ltd joined Tutors, College leaders and Apprentices to discuss the pioneering work carried out in the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Excellence – which has now influenced teaching and learning across every division in College – in a day of intense online scrutiny. The College’s work with employers has seen it already achieve AoC Beacon Standard and Commended Status to reach the final of the City and Guilds-sponsored Employer Engagement category of the awards which highlight best practice in the education sector. In the finals Burnley College is flying the flag for the North of England against Colleges from Devon and Somerset. The College’s impressive entry to the annual awards focussed on the development and impact of the North West Engineering Advisory Board. The group was founded by the College some six years ago to help facilitate collaborative working and align education and training provision to the needs of industry. It now has a membership of more than 30 and is led by employers whose input is integral to the development of the College’s course offer, facilities development and specialist staff recruitment. The entry highlighted how the College and employers’ symbiotic relationship has proved particularly effective during the COVID-19 pandemic in supporting business resilience, change management, diversification and problem-solving. It also showcased how the Advisory board model had been expanded to now embrace additional industries and sectors, as well as professions, to shape additional areas of training provision and allow the sharing of best practice and resources. Neil Burrows, Director of Themis, the College’s Apprenticeship Training Arm, and North West Business Training, the College’s bespoke training provider for the business community, said:
32
“We are extremely proud to be recognised in the top three Colleges in the country for our work with employers and would like to thank every business which has helped us to reach this achievement. “Close links between the education sector and industry have never been more important. Our region’s future success and prosperity depends on our ability to work together to create a dynamic, highly-skilled and motivated workforce of the future and the business community having the tools and knowledge to ride the current and future economic storms through additional training and support.” The College’s award entry focussed on how discussions within the Engineering Advisory Board had transformed the delivery of engineering courses and training aligned to its vision of ensuring students
and Themis Apprentices have the hands-on skills, specialist knowledge and attributes to meet the current and future demands of the region’s engineering employers, large and small. This has led to: • The engineering curriculum and training delivered to students aged 16-19 focussing on skills rather than classroom theory, to create a dynamic, innovative workforce • The number of engineering courses offered increase in line with industry demands and specialisms • The number of Themis Apprentices rise from 100 to 520 and the number of students and Apprentices progressing to university-level qualifications tripling • The College named North West Aerospace Alliance New Talent Training Provider of
the year for two consecutive years The expansion of the successful Advisory Group/Forum model being rolled out to other industries and areas of expertise including Human Resources, Construction Professions and Digital Technologies • The development of a pioneering PreApprenticeship programme to support employers’ future recruitment plans and ensure the very best potential apprentices are not lost to industry • The implementation of Destination Recovery, a multi-faceted support programme offering employers access to the very latest training, change management and business resilience/ agility modelling. Investing more than £4million in its expanding Centre for Advanced Manufacturing, the College has recruited industry experts, with years of experience in their chosen specialisms, and fitted its workshops with the latest industry-standard equipment and technology with the support of employers, including Fort Vale Engineering Ltd, Futaba Manufacturing UK Ltd, BooHoo, Safran Nacelles Ltd, WEC Group Ltd, Orthoplastics Ltd and Hycrome Europe Ltd. Rodriguez Signs for The Landmark, Burnley
The Landmark has signed an important deal with international football agents DRN Sports Management. The new signing will see yet another prestigious organisation join The Landmark’s thriving business community. The Landmark is a grade 2
listed building on School Lane in Burnley town centre. Formerly the home of Burnley Grammar School, the iconic gothic building has been tastefully restored into a thoroughly modern and impressive business hub and coworking space.
The decision for DRN Sports to join The Landmark business club is a strong vote of confidence for the organisation. Kiko Rodriguez, Burnley man and founder of DRN Sports Management, was once a footballer himself. His son Jay Rodriguez is currently a top striker at Burnley FC. Mr. Rodriguez explained about the decision to set up his international headquarters at The Landmark: “Before Covid hit we were flying in players from all over the world and we needed a facility that represented our business. The Landmark has all the facilities a modern business would need. We’ve got plenty of hotels nearby and there are fantastic transport links to other parts of the country.”
DRN Sports is the latest in a string of top signings. Since last October, The Landmark has experienced an astonishing 400% growth. Last November saw one of the region’s most important law firms, Forbes Solicitors, set up an office there. Liz Wilkinson, General Manager at The Landmark, commented: “Having a prestigious organisation like DRN Sports Management set up at The Landmark is another great signing It’s great news for us, for Burnley, and for the North West. I’d like to welcome Kiko Rodriguez and DRN Sports Management to our Business Club. I’m sure they’ll have a great future as part of our community.”
New employment and skills hub for the young people of Burnley Burnley businesses have been called upon to support young people in the town, who have particularly been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. An unfortunate consequence of the pandemic is that the town’s 16–24-year-olds have seen reduced training and employment opportunities, as well as redundancies. The Burnley Together Youth Employment and Skills Hub has been launched to help young people with training and job opportunities, including those not advertised or promoted elsewhere. Individuals will also receive personalised coaching support that focuses on mental and physical health, helping to build resilience. Kate Ingram, Strategic Head of Economy & Growth, Burnley Council said: “Whilst
the town of Burnley is resilient, and we can see that with the way the community has pulled together during this time, we also must understand the challenges that our young people in particular have faced during the past ten months. “Statistically, it is 16–24-yearolds who face the higher volumes of redundancies, as well as reduced employment and training opportunities. That is why the Burnley Together Youth Employment and Skills Hub is essential and we are proud that our young people have this support. “As well as encouraging young people to get in touch, we really do ask our local businesses to reach out and help protect that generation’s future. Whatever support you can provide could really change a young person’s
life, no matter how big or small. We look forward to working with our town’s businesses, who we know are incredibly supportive of training young people, especially via apprenticeships.” There are three ways Burnley’s 16–24-year-olds can access the Youth Hub; by either emailing : contact@burnleytogether.org.uk, by calling them on 01282 686 402 or by asking a Job Centre Plus work coach to refer them to the Hub. Employers in the town can contact Samantha Smallridge, Employment and Skills Coordinator at Burnley Council, at ssmallridge@burnley.gov.uk. Whether it’s offering work experience or opening up a placement, or providing coaching and advice, all support is very much appreciated.
The Hub’s partners include Burnley Council, Calico, Burnley College, UCLan, Burnley Football Club, the Department for Work and Pensions, The Prince’s Trust and Burnley Leisure. Philip Jones, Director of New Services at Calico, said: “Calico is proud to help lead this initiative to ensure the young people in Burnley are given the best chance possible when it comes to skills and employment. This is a joined-up effort by all of the partners to support those young local people who are struggling. I really would encourage both businesses and young people to get involved and together, we can ensure we are in the best position possible to come through these difficult past few months and ensure a brighter future.”

JOANNE HINDLEY PROMOTED TO MANAGING DIRECTOR OF PETER SCOTT PRINTERS Joanne Hindley has dedicated 26 years to Peter Scott Printers, a commercial lithographic and digital printing business established in 1960, and a traditionally male dominated sector. Joanne started as Office Junior, and has progressed through various roles including Commercial Director. She is so highly valued in the company, this week she was promoted to Managing Director. One of the largest projects Joanne has undertaken was overseeing the move of premises in April 2020 to Heasandford Industrial Estate in Burnley, following a £200k investment in a £1m factory. The move was planned pre pandemic and PSP had a surge of demand to deal with at that time too, with items such as essential local authority work, including signposting and social distancing

signs. It was achieved whilst remaining fully operational and open for business. The move was complex and involved moving 36 tonne printing presses and equipment. Joanne took the opportunity to engage experts AMRC North West on lean time management and streamlining production layout, to refine operations and reduce lead times. Peter Scott Printers have also invested in new computer-to-plate tech. PSP is also reducing its carbon footprint, and is FSC certified as part of an initiative to have minimal environmental impact. They now have more capacity, quicker turn-around times and are looking forward to the future, under Joanne’s very capable watch. Joanne Hindley, Managing Director
at PSP said “I’m absolutely delighted and honoured to be given this role, and very proud to be working with such a wonderfully supportive team.” You can see more about Peter Scott Printers at: peterscottprinters.com

Fagan & Whalley Ltd restructure to facilitate future growth Despite a challenging 12 months due to the pandemic, Lancashire-based logistics specialist Fagan & Whalley has recently announced a company restructure, which has been executed to facilitate further growth for the company. With a rich heritage spanning over 90 years, Fagan & Whalley is now recognised as a national brand, offering transport, distribution, and warehousing services to clients across the UK and Europe. As long-standing members of the Burnley Bondholders organisation, the company takes a great deal of pride in its origins, and continues to make regular contributions to community support projects locally, nationally, and internationally. Having grown to encompass a large operation under the management of two directors - Stephen Fagan and Graham Fagan - the senior management team have
42
developed plans for further expansion beyond the four operational sites currently held. In a move designed to align the structure of the company with these aspirations, the board of directors has been extended from two to six people. Joining the board will be Sam Fagan (Business Strategy Director), Daniel Fagan (Transport Operations Director), Daniel Wood (Operations Strategy Director), and Graham Clare (Business Development Director), all of whom have been valued members of the Fagan & Whalley team for several years, with extensive experience in the business and its operation, and a shared
vision for future development. Stephen and Graham Fagan will remain on the board as CEO. “We’ve spent a lot of time over the years working on the structure of the company as it exists beneath the senior management team, and we’ve experienced continual growth under the management of our two directors, Stephen and Graham Fagan,” explains Sam Fagan, Business Strategy Director. “Upon reviewing the operation and discussing our plans for the future, we all came to the understanding that the company had outgrown the current structure, and it was decided that, in order
Stephen Fagan [Director]

Daniel Fagan [Transport Operations Director]
to facilitate further growth, the board of directors would need to be extended. “The senior management team had already been working as a board for a number of years, so it made sense that the new director positions would be filled by senior staff members who already had a good understanding of the company and its future goals. “We’re really excited about this latest restructure, and we’re each looking forward to the heightened level of responsibility these new roles will bring. We have already made a start on our plans for expansion, and we’re excited to execute them and move the company forward into a bright future.”

Feature : Wham Q&A on Brexit & Exports
Q&A
with Tony Grimshaw OBE
Export Champion and Director at the UK’s Leading Housewares Manufacturer: What More UK 44
What More UK is the Lancashire firm behind the extremely popular housewares brand Wham. They sell their products in every major UK supermarket, 1600 independent retailers and they export to a further 75 countries.
Now the UK has officially left the EU, organisations are discovering the reality of the situation. We met up with Tony for a Q&A about Brexit, sustainability, and British manufacturing.
Q
Q
Q
One of the best ways that the UK can compete with other economies, is on sustainability and environmental impacts. For a start, buying British means goods have less distance to travel to reach the consumer. Here in the UK we use the latest technology to cut emissions, the latest fuels, and proper methods of waste disposal. That all adds up to a significant competitive advantage. British manufactured products are some of the best in the world, made to the highest standards with strict environmental controls. The UK is a brand in itself, and we're lucky that it's a brand people know and it inspires confidence. Brand UK is recognised, respected and envied all over the world. People want UK manufactured products and it would be rude not to supply them. I'm very confident that Brand UK is strong enough to stand on its own two legs, next to but apart from the EU.
. How do you feel about Brexit and what are the main opportunities that you see?
It's a big change, and that's always difficult. There will be challenges along the way, but there will also be benefits. >From my experience, challenging situations can often be turned upside down, and seen as opportunities. Even if it isn't a direct business endeavour, it's still a chance to grow, to understand the world a bit better and move forward. At the moment, the problems are obvious. There's extra paperwork to contend with, new processes to go through, and there are new rules to interpret and apply. For now, in the immediate future, business will overcome these challenges. That's what successful businesses do. We deal with challenges on a daily basis.
. You're an export Champion, what do you think will be the short and long-term impacts of Brexit on the country's exporters?
It's all about short-term pains and long-term gains. The short-term pain is things like more paperwork, and rules to understand and apply. Over the longer term, we've got the freedom to set our own course, and you can't put a value on that. We're no longer dependent on 27 other countries to agree a course of action. In my experience, agreement on that scale is usually impossible, that leaves only compromise, and everyone is left feeling short changed.
Q
. What More is a successful British manufacturer. How does manufacturing in the UK affect things like price and sustainability? Investment is vital to keep British manufacturers competitive. The UK cannot compete with other economies where overheads are lower. British manufacturers have higher costs, in terms of wages, national insurance contributions, working conditions, quality control, health and safety. These are all costs that British manufacturers have to pay. Investment in people, production equipment and estate will all help to close the divide.
. and on the same lines, what about sustainability and the environmental impacts?
What More UK manufactures housewares of all kinds, including kitchenware, bakeware, cookware, products for the home laundry and even gardenware like plant pots and troughs. They are proud members of Made in Britain and they export their products to every continent except Antarctica. For more information about What More UK visit the website www.whatmoreuk.com.

Sector Special : Digital Revolution
Mill workers to digital entrepreneurs in four generations Red-fern tell the story of their growth and relocation to their new state-of-the-art premises in their own words.
A
s we’ve been navigating our way through the challenging times of 2020, we wanted to publish this article that details our story of success, growth and innovation, helping the businesses we partner with to flourish and will see Red-Fern relocate to its brand new, state-of-the-art 3,500 sq ft destination in Burnley, helping to accommodate our ever growing team of 20 creatives, developers, marketers, strategists and digital specialists. But why Burnley? Well, as we’ve mentioned in previous articles, this is no ordinary office move - and the story behind our relocation cements that mantra too. The decision-making behind building this new destination for our brand, clients and events in Burnley is one of a heart-warming tale. So, let’s get into it! Here’s how Red-Fern and our history have evolved from mill workers to digital entrepreneurs! As a proud Burnley boy, our CEO and Founder, Sean was keen to move Red-Fern back to his hometown. Red-Fern’s ties with Burnley date way further back than before Sean was even born, with a rich family history in and around the Burnley area Sean grew up around Accrington Road, which is a 5 minute walk from the new Red-Fern HQ. During the 1900s and first industrial revolution, Burnley was one of the largest producers of cotton cloth, known as the weaving capital of the world and recognised for its grit and determination as a leading industrial town. Sean’s Grandmother, Ethel Monks, worked as a cotton weaver in the mills on Trafalgar Street - which is exactly where Red-Fern
46
has invested in developing its new HQ. Sean’s Grandfather, Stanley Monks, worked as a labourer for Massey’s Brewery all his life apart from when he was in the army during the war. Although the brewery closed in the 1970s, it backdated centuries of brewing in Burnley. The last remains of Massey’s you’ll find is an advert at the bottom of Sandygate from a 1920s photograph - a two-minute walk from our new location. Four generations on, the town seeing many changes and now in the midst of Burnley becoming one of the leading towns in the UK for digital innovation and education, there’s still the same core grit and energy around the town. The once of a day renowned, bustling cotton milltown regarded for its extreme hard work and quality, is now a hotbed for innovation and growth. Life as a cotton weaver or brewery labourer in those times certainly wasn’t glamorous - and they certainly didn’t have the top of the range facilities that we’ve instilled in our new office. Who’d have thought that the same premises of blood, sweat, tears and manual labour, would one day be home to our flourishing digital agency? Certainly not us - which is why it’s so special. “I’ve always had my heart in Burnley, with so many fond memories of growing up in and around Accrington Road.” says our CEO Sean Redfearn. “Walking down to the Mitre and then into the town to do the weekly shopping. The fact that my grandmother actually worked in the mills on Trafalgar street and we will be running the business I founded from the very same mills holds many happy and proud emotions for me”.
Great grandmother, Ada Spencer; Great grandfather, William Joseph Spencer; Grandmother, Ethel Monks; Grandfather, Stan Monks and Uncle Wilfred Monks
47
Sector Special : Digital Revolution Sean goes on to say, “The journey and growth Red-Fern has seen over the last 3 years is incredible, the investment into the new HQ is one way I would like to give back to the town. As one of the UKs leading design, technology and marketing agencies, we’ve created a great name and strong brand for ourselves, partnering with global manufacturing, retail and technology companies to achieve their growth goals. Locating our HQ in Burnley is the next natural step, employing talent from the town and surrounding areas gives me great pride and I cannot wait to see how Red-Fern will work in partnership with the town to create growth”. It’s a family story - and one that we’re extremely proud of. The fact that Sean grew up around the streets near our new headquarters with such a memory-filled and loving childhood, while his family worked hard to contribute to the town’s economy and global outlet, was a huge motive for us moving back to Burnley. Now it’s time for us, as a leading digital agency, to give back to Burnley and propel our business forwards in our new home.
48
The destination for creativity, innovation, technology, education, events and brands As we’ve mentioned, our new destination is situated on Trafalgar Street and accessed via Sandygate - which acknowledges both Sean’s Grandmother and Grandfather’s previous working lives. We’re so excited to be moving into the old mill that was once a contributor to the global cotton market share. Not only is it exciting for us - but our partners and clients too. While we’re making all of these changes, we’re doing them for you! That way, we have the facilities and space to create an even higher standard of work - whether that’s technology, development, design or marketing - for all of our partners. At Red-Fern, we value delighting our partners in very high regard - as it should be. So, how are we going to do that?
let’s give you a little glimpse into our new home...
49
Sector Special : Digital Revolution
New studio area ready for 24 designers, developers & marketers Location Firstly, let's start with the location, as I am sure you can already gather, we LOVE Burnley. On the western side of the town centre, Trafalgar street is situated at the very heart of the re-developed weavers’ triangle. With easy access to all the local amenities and the railway station on our doorstep with links direct to Manchester and Leeds, we are perfectly positioned. An ultra-creative and inspiring space for our team with a nod to the hard work and history that has come before us in the mill, we’ve created a working environment that allows us to create a similar working ethic. While the environment is a world apart from a cotton mill full of large weaving machines and dangerous equipment, we’ve kitted out the workspace to allow our design, development and marketing teams to maximise their efforts on every project and partnership we create.
Video recording studio
Brand new events space
Our in-house videographer Alan Noble and Sean are super excited about our state of the art facility - developing video strategies, filming and audio recording to deliver world-class video and audio content. The studio will see our podcasting and video capabilities enhanced to an all-new level. It’s fitted with top of the range equipment, as we’re investing in our facilities so we can provide unrivalled value to our existing and potential clients. We’re incredibly excited to see the fantastic productions that come out of there in the future!
We’re aiming to transform the way that marketing, design and development events are held and hosted - and our new events space allows us to do just that. Quite often, we attend events and are greeted with an impersonal and non-immersive experience. To us, this poor experience really holds events back and is counterproductive with some of the amazing guest speakers we’ve seen down the years. Events should be remembered for the actual event - not its lack of competence. Our events space allows ourselves and other businesses to hold events that create the perfect environment for a personable experience. That way, we can interact with all attendees and it’s not a case of awkward networking with people who aren’t fully invested. The events space will add great value to all - our partners, us and all attendees.
Education space One of the next key steps in our journey is to develop the apprenticeships and educational side of our business, we are working closely with the local university and colleges, developing the processes to consistently employ apprentices and develop their skills and experience.
At Red-Fern, we prioritise collaboration and working together especially in our line of work. Our close-knit team has an incredible workspace that can spark inspiration, creativity in an unparalleled creative, innovative and collective environment. 50
Two generations later... With an insight into a true and heartwarming story of how a deep rooted family from Burnley have gone through four generations, over 180 years of family history and industrial change, plus the that fact they are still part of the community and helping to shape the future of the town and its residents, Sean and his family are proud to be mill workers to digital entrepreneurs.

This allows the technology to continuously deliver a high level of antiviral efficacy even after it has been applied for a lengthy period of time, unlike standard disinfectants which only work on contact at the point of application and quickly evaporate leaving the surface unprotected.

“Shieldplus was originally developed as a key weapon in the fight against hospital acquired infections and has been used extensively in hospitals throughout the world. We quickly realised its potential benefit in helping to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike silver-ion or other heavy metal technologies based on poison, Shieldplus is non-toxic and does not leach into the environment.”

The technology works through attracting negatively charged microorganisms onto the positively charged molecular coating of Shieldplus. The cell wall is pierced and electrocuted, killing the microbe or virus immediately Since launch, the innovative new technology has been successfully used in a range of settings including major international hotel groups, education facilities, theatres and local authorities who have been able to save considerable time and money on their new covid-era cleaning regimes without compromising on protection. The product is available in a range of formats and sizes, including 750ml trigger spray bottles and 5L bulk cans. www.panaz.com

Feature : Baton handed to new Chair
We say goodbye to the longstanding Chair of Burnley Bondholders who hands over the baton The chair of the pioneering public/private partnership Burnley Bondholders stepped down after eight years in the role. Mark Crabtree OBE, founder and managing director of Burnley-based AMS Neve, has led the successful Burnley Bondholders to over 200 members. The partnership is dedicated to raising the prosperity and profile of the borough and has attracted attention from the wider business community, other local authorities and the press. Some of Burnley’s greatest achievements during the time of Mr Crabtree being at the helm of the Bondholders includes being named the Most Enterprising Area in 2013, the second most successful town for digital jobs growth in 2016 and a Top 16 UK Tech Town in 2018.Most Enterprising Area in Britain 2013.
Mr Crabtree said: “I feel now is the right time for me to step down and I look forward to welcoming my successor. Burnley Bondholders is highly regarded both within and outside our borough and over the years, I’ve often been asked by other councils how the partnership is so successful. The answer, quite simply, is the spirit of the people of Burnley.“We see what needs doing and without fanfare, we roll up our sleeves and get things done. The town has an innovative, resilient and entrepreneurial approach and this will be needed now more than ever as we navigate the postCOVID-19 era.

I want to thank everyone I have worked with during my role as chairman of Burnley Bondholders and I am extremely proud of what we have achieved. I wish my successor all the best.
“I will continue to work hard for the town of Burnley, both growing my own business AMS Neve and supporting the growth of Making it in Burnley and The Landmark, which are both going from strength to strength. “Finally, I want to thank everyone I have worked with during my role as chairman of Burnley Bondholders and I am extremely proud of what we have achieved. I wish my successor all the best.” AMS Neve makes world-class products that are highly regarded particularly in the music and film industries. Sir George Martin, often described as the “Fifth Beatle”, once said “Neve consoles are the Rolls-Royce of the industry”. It is based at AMS Technology Park on Billington Road. Making it in Burnley is an aspiration strategy to help boost the attainment of young people in the town. It covers a raft of
initiatives and stakeholders including UCLan, Burnley College, the head teachers of schools, Burnley Council and the Children’s University. An important part of Mr Crabtree’s education and skills work is Primary Engineer, which he brought to Burnley. It aims to develop children and young people through engagement with engineering and address the gender imbalance in science and engineering. Its Burnley HQ is based at AMS Neve, which funded engineering lessons for 28 primary schools in the town. The lessons were delivered with engineers from Burnley Bondholder companies and Burnley was the first location in the UK to have such a town-wide initiative. Another significant contribution he has made to the town is The Landmark, the historic building which now provides creative work spaces and business support
for start-ups and growing businesses. A first for Burnley, The Landmark – the former Burnley Grammar School on School Lane – also focuses on providing inspiring environments for students, kitted with the latest technology. Mick Cartledge, Burnley Council’s Chief Executive said: “Mark’s contribution to Burnley Bondholders cannot be underestimated. From day one, he has been passionate about driving our town forward and promoting it as a great place to live, work, study and explore. “He leaves the Bondholders in a strong position and I have begun the process to find a successor with the same passion and commitment to Burnley. I know I speak for everyone when I say a huge thank you to Mark and we look forward to celebrating his achievements when the time is right and safe for the bondholders to come together.

The world’s
BIGGEST AIRCRAFT
that helped pave Safran Nacelles’ future
I
n 2019, Airbus announced the end of production for their A380 superjumbo jet, well-known for being the world’s largest passenger airliner, and the most modern commercial aircraft ever designed. For Burnley’s Safran Nacelles Ltd it signalled the end of an era, which began nearly twenty years ago and that helped put the Bancroft Road site on the map for its manufacturing expertise – which it is still renowned for today. The story of the A380 programme in Burnley started back in 2002 when Safran Nacelles, then known as Hurel Dubois, was chosen to design, industrialise and manufacture part of the nacelle called the blocker doors. – no small feat, as the site had not been involved in the production of parts of this huge size before. Over the next few years, a range of parts started to be manufactured in Burnley for the two different types of nacelles produced; one type for RollsRoyce’s Trent 900 engines, and another for Engine Alliance GP7200 engines. Due to the large size of the nacelles (8.5m long and almost 4m diameter wide) the teams were faced with a range of technical and industrial challenges to overcome along the way. In addition to that, Airbus requested a lighter and quieter aircraft. Safran Nacelles developed and integrated new innovations: the world’s first thrust reverser activated with an electrical system, and the use of a lot of composite and metallic alloy materials both with acoustic treatments, to answer the customer’s needs. These challenges were met with success
60
and Safran Nacelles has now become renowned for these innovations, many of which are now used in their current programmes, which include Airbus’ A320neo and A330neo programmes. Graham Banks, Safran Nacelles Ltd Assemblies Director, said: “It was a great honour for the company to be involved in the prestigious A380 programme, but it was also a huge challenge as we had never had to produce anything on that scale before. We had to take a step back and look at how we could approach it in a different way. We learnt a lot and increased our skills in many areas technical, operational, team and customer management, contracts, industrialisation, processes, programme management and quality. It also provided an opportunity to invest in the site with a new cleanroom, autoclave and C-Scan machine. Everything we learnt was then applied to our current programmes. We can honestly say that this programme has been a foundation stone for Safran Nacelles.” Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Safran Nacelles delivered the 1,000th A380 nacelle to Emirates in October
2020 and delivered the last nacelle to Airbus in January 2021. However, the site will continue to manufacture spares parts for many years to come. Michael Rigalle, Safran Nacelles Ltd Managing Director said: “I am extremely proud and sad to see the end of the A380 programme in Burnley. It was a huge part of our site’s history and the credibility Safran Nacelles gained from it underpinned our success in winning other programmes. In particular, the A380 helped to shine a light on the fantastic skills and the quality of work that could be produced here in Burnley.”

From terrace house basement to Habergham Mill [How the people of Burnley have got behind Batch Distillery]
When Phil Whitwell, director at Batch Distillery, asked his then local council in Winchester for support in growing the business, he was surprised by their response... Speaking to Burnley.co.uk, he told us that the business was deemed as too small and would therefore not receive any support. “I told my nephew Oliver about what had happened, and he said he’d be interested in establishing the business in his hometown of Burnley, where he has lived most of his life. So, we moved operations into the basement of his terrace house in late 2014/early 2015 and he became our Head Distiller,” Mr Whitwell explained. However, the company still needed support to expand and this time, it was a different story.
