Themis Aeronautical Engineering Apprentices visit aerospace heroes Advanced Aeronautical Apprentices from Themis at Burnley College experienced a day in the presence of aerospace giants as they came face to face with Concorde and Nimrod at Manchester Airport. The Apprentices, who work at top Aerospace Engineering employers across the North West, were given the opportunity to learn more about some of the UK’s most historic engineering achievements at an industry best practice visit hosted by Runway Visitor Park at Manchester Airport. The sessions included information about the speed and uses of the aircraft, including specialist Maritime Patrol and Attack SONAR plane Nimrod and the famous passengers who once used Concorde in its heyday. Later in the day, Apprentices were given radios to hear information from Air Traffic Control as flights took off and came in to land at the UK’s third busiest airport. Aeronautical Engineering trainer assessor James Kenyon said: “Our trip to
Manchester Airport was a fantastic way to introduce our Advanced Engineering Apprentices to the types of aircraft that used British innovation to break the mould. It was great to show each member of the group that they could be using their skills to manufacture or design iconic aircraft or aeronautical technologies in the future. Inspirational trips like this one really bring home the idea of what Apprentices can achieve, understanding that they too have what it takes to be world-class engineers.” Director of Themis Simon Jordan said:“Trips like these are important to provide additional skills and knowledge for our Advanced Apprentices, giving them industry insights that will help them further their careers. The previous masterplan for the area, which was completed over 10 years ago has guided much of the town’s growth over the past decade, and helped secure funding which has seen the development of the new Manchester Road Railway Station, the new town centre public realm transformation, Burnley’s Knowledge Quarter, incorporating the University and College Campus and the new Vision Park development, and the mixed use OntheBanks scheme in the historic Weavers’ Triangle, which has seen the transformation of the fringe town centre canalside area providing a unique business, leisure and waterside housing offer. The new masterplan will take into account changes in the national and local

economy and in the retail and leisure market, complementing the recently published Local Plan Proposed Submission Document, which sets out a high growth strategy for the borough, with new sites for aspirational housing and extensions to the successful business parks along the M65 corridor. Council Leader, Mark Townsend says: “A key part of the borough’s growth strategy is to enhance the town centre offer, which is a significant retail, leisure, service and learning centre for much of Pennine Lancashire.” “We were delighted to announce the opening of Primark in Burnley Town Centre early 2018 and the new masterplan will develop a focussed strategy going forward to promote the ongoing potential in Burnley’s town centre, unlock further development, attract new businesses and residential development and help to secure external funding to fund the next phase of plans.” Adding: “Burnley has a reputation for getting things done and has a strong package to offer investors. We are growing above
national trends and have been identified as a boom town with all the ingredients needed to grow by economic experts. We want to keep being creative, doing things differently and creating new experiences to take the town forward and the masterplan will us achieve our objectives.“ BDP will work with their identified partners, BE Group and Urban flow to form a multi-disciplinary team bringing together urban planning, transport planning, design and architectural skills, with a strong collective knowledge of commercial markets and commercial development. Doug Metcalf, stadium manager, BFC “Burnley Football Club are pleased to be working in partnership with Burnley Council. The Club is planning significant investment in its ground which sits on the edge of the town centre and the masterplan should identify synergies to ensure the town benefits from having a premiership club on its doorstep.” A formal launch of the new Masterplan is expected to take place early in 2018.
Birchall purchase new site adjacent to HQ to accommodate growth Just two and a half years after moving to larger premises, a successful family business has its sights set on further expansion. Award-winning Birchall Foodservice more than doubled the size of their HQ when they purchased Cobalt House on Burnley Bridge Business Park in January 2015. But with the business growing faster than predicted, they are now reaching capacity status at their new home. In response, the company has recently purchased a connecting site, securing the opportunity for future development. The two-acre site currently houses an obsolete two-storey office/workshop complex, which will be demolished to make way for a warehouse expansion. In the short term, the surrounding land will help ease site congestion for visitor parking, along with the company’s expanding delivery fleet. Company MD Justin Birchall said: “Having more than doubled our warehouse space by relocating to this site only 30 months ago, we hadn‘t predicted that our growth at this stage would be as big as it is. Obviously we’re really pleased but we needed to ensure we have plans in place to facilitate the next stage of our growth. “Therefore the adjacent site becoming available was extremely fortuitous and, despite the challenges of tackling a brownfield site, we are determined to develop this location into a productive facility benefitting the company, its employees and the community.”
Padiham celebrates Lottery funding success Padiham is celebrating a major lottery win that will help preserve the town’s past for future generations. The Padiham Townscape Heritage scheme, Crafting the Future, will benefit from £1.4 million of Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) money to help protect the town centre’s historic buildings. It will also help support work to create an area of special architectural and historic interest and making the town more attractive for residents, workers and visitors. Burnley Council worked with local businesses, Padiham Town Council, residents and other interested organisations on the bid. Earlier this year the council asked local people to help shape a conservation area management plan which was a key part of the successful bid. Councillor Sue Graham, executive member for regeneration and economic development, said: “Padiham has a wonderful heritage centre that needs preserving for future generations. At the same time this successful bid will help breathe new life into the centre. This is great news and the result of close partnership working between the
council, local residents and businesses, and other groups to improve their town. “Schemes like this don’t just help to create attractive, vibrant places that people want to live, work, visit and invest in. They also inspire communities to find out more about their local heritage, and give people the chance to learn new skills. It will help enhance Padiham’s historic heart, build on the town’s civic pride, and attract more visitors and shoppers to the town.” Councillor John Harbour, the council’s deputy leader and “heritage champion”, added: “This is wonderful news for Padiham and a great boost to the town and the ongoing work to create a vibrant centre that reflects the past as well as the future. I’d like to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund and everyone who played a part in the successful bid for all their support.” The Townscape Heritage scheme is focused on a compact area of mostly Victorian buildings at the heart of the conservation area, known locally as “The Hill.” The council worked with a number of key partners in the successful bid, including Lancashire County Council, Gawthorpe Textile Collection, Fixhub, and Padiham Archives.
The five-year programme aims to bring back traditional life and vitality to this area of the town by: • overseeing the repair and restoration of eligible historic buildings within the Townscape Heritage boundary. •
carrying out environmental improvements, such as introducing traffic calming, pavement resurfacing and public art enhancements
•
working with local partners to deliver a wider activity programme, including community events and heritage skills training
•
support regeneration and business development throughout the town centre by celebrating all things home made in Padiham. This will include the development of a marketing strategy “Home made on the High Street” to build on the growing cluster of creative businesses and draw on Padiham’s heritage and connections to the Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth and Gawthorpe Textiles Collection.

News SECURELY TRANSFORMING THE FUTURE By Seriun
GDPR is fast approaching and will transform business operations, with extremely hefty fines being dished out to any business not fully complying with regulations. The main focus must be on maintaining client privacy and managing data breaches. You would be surprised at how vulnerable networks can be, even within multi-million pound operations. We’ve all heard about the recent ransomware cyber-attacks that have devastated the British NHS, Netherlands’ TNT, Russia’s Rosneft and most recently America’s HBO, yet security still isn’t the top of the agenda for many UK businesses where it should be. Breaches can go undetected for months and it’s getting more difficult for organisations to detect them on their own. We believe prevention is better than cure, and it all starts by getting your business technically ‘in order’ through a managed proactive approach to meet best practice. It’s crucial that businesses understand the value of investing in security and IT, and look beyond managed service provision to partnering with a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) who can provide the end-to-end solution they need. Derren Stephenson, Operations Manager at Seriun said: “The availability of electronic crypto currency has in part driven the explosion of cyber-attacks, because the cybercriminal can now do the crime and get paid in a virtually untraceable currency. It is no longer a question of ‘if your systems will get attacked’ it’s now a question of ‘when’. If businesses do not act now and implement a full end-to-end security solution, they will be leaving themselves wide open for attack – and if the attack is successful this could potentially result in a total loss of company data.” A quality MSSP will deploy the latest Security, Information and Event Management (SIEM) technology to ensure your networks are secure, your IT operations are optimised, and that your business complies with regulations such as GDPR, PCI DSS and CIP. The MSSP should use intelligent security analytics to unify the automated collection, analysis and recovery of log data with network and endpoint monitoring – ensuring cyber threats are detected and dealt with before a material breach occurs. If we take the analogy of managing a castle and building a fortress to protect the kingdom – all the day-to-day operational activities would be taken care of by a Managed Service Provider. However, the MSSP would go beyond, ensuring that all the layers of security are in place and fully functioning, i.e. making sure the moat is full, the guards are where they should be, and that the walls aren’t crumbling as the invaders are approaching. In translation, the MSSP will proactively manage every layer of security they put in place to protect you and your customers, from multi-factor authentication and data encryption to back-up solutions and business continuity. Make sure you partner with the right MSSP – and that will take care of your system security. You should also ensure the people behind your business are trained in security breach prevention too – so they don’t weaken your defences. If you still need to plan your GDPR strategy, or if you want to alleviate your concerns about data security, then give Seriun a call on: 08081 643 644 or visit: www.seriun.co.uk.

Crow Wood further enhance their green credentials Burnley’s award winning Spa has further enhanced its green credentials with the recent installation of a 50 kw solar pv system. The solar project was installed in less than a week by local renewable energy specialist The Low Carbon Energy Company. It will deliver 45,000kwh a year for the next twenty years at less than 1p per kwh ,and beyond and reduce the carbon emissions by 25 tonnes a year. Oliver Brown , Director at Crow Wood said: “Crow Wood is focussed on the ecological impact of their activities and are constantly looking at ways to improve efficiencies in order to reduce environmental impact. “We have invested heavily over the past few years in a range of sophisticated management systems which allow us to control heating, lighting and air conditioning to create the minimum waste of energy, whilst at the same time generating our own electricity following the installation of a CHP generator and more so now with this recent solar panel installation. “We looked at solar a few years ago and the numbers didn’t quite work for us but we were pleasantly surprised when we asked Ged to re-visit his original proposal and the returns on investment met our requirements. We now generate even more of our own clean energy, reducing our costs and CO2 emissions. Adding: “The team at Low Carbon were great and worked around our busy schedules with no fuss and high degree of professionalism.” Ged Ennis MD at Low Carbon Energy, said: “We are delighted that Crow Wood selected us to deliver this important project for them. It’s been a pleasure working with Andy and Oliver Brown and the team at Crow Wood. We had to prove not only the environmental benefits but the commercial benefits as well. Constantly rising energy prices are a major issue for all businesses and clearly Crow Wood saw those benefits and acted to take control of the energy costs in a way that secures their supply , lowers costs and benefits the environment.”

And Birchall Foodservice, which occupies the 64,100 sq ft Cobalt Building, has bought a two-acre site next to its base with a view to expanding its operations onsite. House sales in Burnley amongst best in Britain Burnley has been declared a property hotspot after a significant rise in sales, according to a new report from Lloyds Bank, using Land Registry figures. Burnley was joint seventh in England and Wales with a 10 per cent rise in house sales. In comparison, 82 per cent of towns included in the survey saw house sales fall between 2015 and 2016. This is reflected in increased confidence in the area from housebuilders, with a wide range of quality housing schemes taking shape across the borough on several previously developed (brownfield) sites. Councillor John Harbour, the council’s executive member for housing, said: “The fact we are
enjoying a boost in house sales across the borough is really good news. “This is being reflected on the ground with significant developments of a wide range of new homes. The fact that many of those are being built on brownfield land shows our commitment, where possible, to re-use sites that have previously been developed. “We are seeing a whole range of new homes being built across our borough that will help meet demand from current and future home-buyers, and which will help attract new people into the area. This is a very much part of a longer term strategy to diversify the borough’s housing stock to attract and retain a skilled workforce.”

News Checkedsafe fuelling a clean air drive A collaborative partnership led by Idox (Cloud Amber) with Burnley business CheckedSafe, Amey and Birmingham City Council has secured funding from the UK’s innovation agency InnovateUK, to help reduce highway maintenance fleet emissions around the city. The 12-month Greenwave pilot project, which started in April 2017, will provide fleet vehicle drivers with an app to monitor traffic signal green timings. By being aware of when traffic lights will change, it’s hoped drivers will be able to adapt their speed to ‘ride the greenwave’ and minimise stops and starts at traffic lights. This should reduce fuel use and also emissions, which are typically greater from stationary/idling traffic. Clean Air Zone by 2020 As one of a number of cities in England mandated to introduce a Clean Air Zone by 2020, this project is aligned to Birmingham City Council’s efforts to improve air quality by reducing the impact from particular types of vehicles. This pilot will work with a small team of drivers and 12 larger vehicles managed by Amey, which provides highways maintenance services to Birmingham City Council through a 25-year partnership. The vehicles used for the trial have been selected because by their nature they use more fuel, and are also deployed in a variety of different work activities across Birmingham. Collaborative Partnership CheckedSafe is delivering the app that drivers will use to monitor traffic signal timings, working with Idox (CloudAmber) which manages the Urban Traffic Monitoring Control (UTMC) system that controls the traffic signal timings, on behalf of Amey and Birmingham

City Council. Anthony Burgess, from Idox (Cloud Amber), said: “The development of Greenwave demonstrates that we are committed to meeting the UK’s CO2 reduction and zero emission targets. There is no known solution of this type in existence – which uses data feeds from existing infrastructure to provide drivers with live updates enabling them to change their driving style. We are excited to see what the future will hold for this type of innovative, transport management solution.” Darran Harris, from CheckedSafe, said: “This is an exciting project for us. The development of the app will assist drivers in riding the “greenwave” and then hopefully encourage drivers to improve driving behaviour to reduce omissions and save fuel. If successful, the solution will be of huge benefit to all towns and cities.” Tony Mathews, Transport Manager for Amey in Birmingham, said: ” Amey is involved in a number of initiatives which support Birmingham City Council’s drive to improve air quality and we are delighted to be piloting this technology. “All of our vehicles are GPS tracked so we can monitor how driving styles impact fuel consumption, and we are excited to see how this trial will help our drivers adapt even further to limit the environmental impact of these essential journeys.” Philip Edwards, Head of Growth and Transportation, Birmingham City Council said: “Air quality is a big concern for the city and the health and wellbeing of its citizens.” www.checkedsafe.com

Freewebstore have successful conference in Chicago Freewebstore, the Burnley based eCommerce platform has returned after a successful exhibition at the Internet Retailer Conference and Expo in Chicago, USA. The firm, which caters for an international customer base across 178 countries, was established in 2007 by Managing Director Martin Hermansen. Whilst in the States, the company also spent time in Illinois mingling with global partners including TrustPilot, PayPal, and MailChimp. Keen to forge new partnerships, the Freewebstore team decked their exhibition stand out with a foosball table, challenging punters to a quick game while they chatted
business. “We drew people into our stand by challenging attendees to a game of foosball whilst we talked eCommerce!” said Marketing and Business Developer, Matthew Turner. “It worked wonders, taking the Americans back to their college days and creating a more relaxed environment.” After the event, at which many foosball aficionados professed to being newly-converted Burnley FC fans, the Freewebstore team donated the table to James Jordan Boys and Girls club – Michael Jordan’s Chicago-based youth club under the name of his late father.
“Our product was extremely well received by the Americans we spoke to,” Matthew added. “Our sole aim was to increase our brand awareness and create partnerships, and we came out with over ten new global partnerships. The Americans that we met loved soccer and were very fond of Burnley.” Never far from a Clarets connection, the company’s Partner Manager, Stephen Darwood, bumped into two former Burnley players in Chicago, snapping a pic with Tyrone Mears and Chris McCann after their loss against the Chicago Fire playing for Atlanta United.

News Burnley tops ONS digital jobs growth tables – a hub of digital innovation Figures by the ONS Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES), show Burnley ranks an impressive second place for digital jobs growth in Britain. The Survey also showed Burnley continues to buck regional and national trends in overall private sector jobs growth. Jobs growth in the digital sector is where Burnley really shone, with a yearly growth during 2014-15 of a whopping 161.8% – against NW growth of just 30.0% and GB growth of 2% in digital jobs. The digital economy is leading the growth of local economies across the UK and Burnley has seized the opportunities for growth in the digital sector, building on its existing digital business base to grow the economy with next generation jobs. Council Leader, Mark Townsend, said: “Embracing digital technology will have huge rewards for Burnley businesses and for the Burnley economy, making us a more competitive and more prosperous place. I’m delighted with the latest ONS digital jobs growth figures for Burnley and for the positive private sector jobs growth overall.” Adding: “Burnley has several businesses at the forefront of global digital technology, IT and programming, including: the world class AMS Neve digital sound desks; one of the country’s most advanced 3D printing firms, FDM printing; leaders in digital IT and telecoms Chess Ltd; code warriersJP74; Vodafone Automotive and many more. Burnley is working hard to raise its profile as a town at the forefront of digital technology, and these results reinforce this important message. A Digital Burnley Group has recently been formed within the wider Digital Lancashire Initiative to shine a light on and to grow our digital economy and the ONS figures reflect the huge investments made to improve Burnley’s business partnerships and infrastructure over the past few years which has attracted several new businesses to Burnley.” Mark Crabtree, OBE, Managing Director, AMS Neve, said: “The Digital Burnley Group is probably the most advanced cluster in Lancashire working to make the town the premier location for digital businesses as a contrast to a big city site. Our aims are to establish a thriving communal business hub to enhance our digital cluster. We’re also working to communicate clearly to students the skillsets that they need to succeed in this field and to actively assist with their education and experience – and so continue to increase the pool of Burnley’s digital talent. The ONS figures confirm what we are promoting – our digital growth and strengths in recruiting knowledge intensive jobs in the digital sector. A recent Independent Economic Review on the Northern Powerhouse identified ‘digital’ as a key growth opportunity for the North, and with our already successful digital hub and the new direct rail link to Manchester, this will open up huge opportunities for Burnley’s growth.”

Boohoo invest for future growth
Burnley and Manchester based Boohoo.com has raised £50m through the placing of 22.7m new shares priced at 220p in order to fund new investments in the business. Boohoo shares hit a record high – closing up 18% at 260p in July – after Boohoo said the money raised from the sale of new shares would be used to pay for a “supersite” warehouse in Burnley, as the retailer attempts to meet rising demand for its clothing ranges, aimed at 16 to 30 year-olds. Warehouse expansion plans include an automated distribution centre to provide £2bn in annual sales capacity, on top of the £1bn provided by its already extended site in Burnley. The cost of the land and construction of the warehouse is expected to cost about £150m over the next three years. A spokesperson for the company said Boohoo had yet to decide on a location for the 600,000 sq ft facility. The company, which sells dresses priced from £4 to £50 and jeans ranging from £6 to £35, is valued at about £2.8bn – four times as much as Debenhams. Nick Bubb, an independent retail
analyst, said: “It says something about the extraordinary outlook for the business that all the shares have been snapped up at 220p, a minimal 0.3% discount to the closing price [in July].” The retailer exceeded expectations for first-quarter sales, which more than doubled to £120m in the three months to 31 May. Boohoo also raised its guidance for full-year sales growth to 60%, from an earlier forecast of 50%. The shares were floated at 50p three years ago and fell to 23p in the first year, but over the past 12 months they have risen more than 300%. Mahmud Kamani and Kane, joint chief executives, said the business had performed well across all brands and locations in the first quarter. “The combination of broadening product ranges, strong brand image, competitive prices and good customer service continues to drive sales momentum, while the inclusion of our new brands is proving the potential of our multi-brand strategy in delivering strong group revenue growth,” they said. In addition to the sale of new shares, Mahmud Kamani, The co-founder of Boohoo. com sold more than £80m of his family’s own
shares. Mahmud Kamani and his siblings Rabia Kamani and Nurez Kamani sold a total of 36.6m shares. It left the Kamani family, together with co-founder Carol Kane, with a 39% stake in the business, which also includes the brands Pretty Little Thing and Nasty Gal. George Mensah, an analyst at Shore Capital, said: “We have no concerns about the possibility of the most senior member of management selling down equity, we believe this to be opportunistic … and we believe both chief executives to be committed to the long-term future of the business.” The upbeat outlook from Boohoo was in sharp contrast to the fortunes of its rival Topshop, where UK sales fell for the first time in more than a decade. Boohoo was founded in Manchester in 2006 targeting young, cost-conscious customers. The average item of clothing on the website is £13. The company bought a 66% stake in Pretty Little Thing, which aims to “make every girl feel like a celebrity”, in January. It bought US-based Nasty Gal, which targets 18 to 27 year-olds, a month later.

‘Made in Lancashire’ Whinberry Gin Growing Burnley based micro gin distillery, Batch Brew, launched a ‘Big Batch Whinberry Picking Challenge’ over the summer - for a special limited edition batch of their new whinberry gin. Whinberries (a northern term for Bilberries) are in abundance on the moors and hillsides around Lancashire over the summer months – a tiny fruit similar to the blueberry but smaller – but a prince of the northern fruits. Batch Brew invited the people of Burnley and Lancashire to get involved in making a proud Lancashire gin made here in Burnley and be part of the production of a truly local specialty product. Phil Whitwell, Director at Batch Brew Ltd, said: “We were looking to collect around fifty kilos, and we were delighted to get local residents and communities

involved across Burnley and Lancashire. It was an idea we had to evoke childhood memories of wild fruit picking and to re-introduce the pleasures of getting out there and picking your own fruit to a new generation – and we had a good response. “We are so proud to make what we term ‘The Lancashire Gin’ here in our micro distillery in Burnley which is taking the gin industry by storm, and our new Whinberry Gin is taking complex flavours to a whole new level.” Adding: “We’ve just taken delivery of a 3,200 litre former Cognac Barrel from France in which we’ll age the limited edition gin, which will take in the cognac flavour and add a whole new dimension to the Limited Edition. “Our Whinberry Gin which we recently launched has been hugely popular. This
is normally made with dried whinberries, so we are really excited about making the limited edition with fresh locally grown and locally picked berries which will be ready in time for Christmas – making it a great ‘made in Burnley’ Christmas gift. It will be a true new flavour for the gin connoisseur senses.” “We believe ourselves to be a true a definition of a family-run distillery as there is. Our premium gin is lovingly crafted. We don’t ask anyone else to produce our drinks and we source everything, from the bottles, to the botanicals and everything inbetween – and to use local people to source the local berries is truly in keeping with our family ethos – our Lancashire family – We produce and bottle by hand to ensure quality and individuality, which the team are immensely proud of.”
Door4 16 year’s growth crowned by office upgrade Following 16 consecutive years of growth, digital marketing agency Door4 has moved into new, larger premises in Burnley. Launched by Burnley born and bred Leon Calverley in 2000, Door4 has since grown to a team of 18, with revenues nearing £1m per year. The move from original premises in Nelson to Burnley Wharf, Manchester Road, sees the company now occupying the top floor of a 1840s Grade II listed building at the former canal wharf. Managing director Leon Calverley says: “As well as needing larger premises to cope with our expansion, we moved to Burnley to take advantage of the growing digital economy. “Burnley is fast developing as a hotspot for the digital industries,
and the move into prestigious new premises is better for attracting and retaining the right staff – the lifeblood of any knowledge-based business. “The new location not only provides better transport links but also better networking, amongst a thriving cluster of local businesses. “We had lots of support from Burnley Borough Council finding accommodation, introductions, and structuring our rates. We chose the top floor, with original structural beams and warehouse machinery, as it provides our staff with a more inspiring work environment. “We’ve already seen an increase in clients wanting to visit us, and there’s a pub next door! So we couldn’t be happier with the move.”
Burnley hailed as a ‘blueprint’ for others to follow by leading Lancashire business leader At a recent LBV business panel forum, featuring Tony Grimshaw, director of WhatMore UK, as well as Kate Ingram, head of regeneration and planning policy at the council; Dharma Kovvuri, dean of the business school at UCLan; Mike Riding, MD of Process Instruments and Leon Calverley, MD of Door4, discussions centred around the borough’s growing digital sector, the success of the Burnley Bondholders and strengthening links between local businesses and schools. Kate highlighted regeneration and job creating projects across Burnley including a £4m investment in the public realm in the town centre. She said: “It is about giving it a facelift
and giving people confidence to invest in the town centre and bring in more retailers.” Kate also highlighted the digital success story emerging in Burnley, pointing out recent statistics revealing a 162 per cent increase in jobs in the local digital economy. And she added: “People are coming to Burnley because there is a lifestyle offer here that is attractive for small businesses and a good business environment.” Tony Grimshaw, director of Padihambased What More, the UK’s leading manufacturer of plastic housewares, was speaking at the latest Lancashire Hotspots event held at Turf Moor in Burnley. He told the audience of around 60 business leaders: “Burnley has got an attitude
to just get things done. It’s the attitude not only of the council but the people of Burnley.” But he added that the borough did have its challenges, including ensuring a pipeline of future commercial development to attract new businesses and to allow existing operations to grow. He said: “It is about the future. UCLan and Burnley College are preparing the workforce for the future; Burnley has to prepare the workplace for the future.” Lancashire Business View’s Hotspots event at Burnley FC’s ground attracted business leaders from across the county. It was held in association with Burnley Council. A Question Time-style discussion was chaired by Richard Slater, publisher of LBV.

Burnley entrepreneurs honoured in World Luxury Spa and Restaurant Awards,Vietnam 2017 The scene is set; it’s a warm, exotic summer’s evening in Vietnam, the sun begins to set over the bustling and intriguing city of Hanoi, excited participants gather at the event of the year, the event that will later that night honour them as the crème da la crème of the luxury wellness and fine dining industries. Champagne flows, canapés travel on beautifully decorated trays to guests, and the air of anticipation grows. Proudly hosted by the spectacular JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi, who with a red carpet welcome invite over 180 guests from more than 50 countries to a dazzling evening of luxury, glamour, and style. “Over 100,000 votes brought our winners here tonight; 100,000 times the public voiced their opinion on who of the 1,000 entrants are deserving of these accolades. Tonight we honour the staff of these fine establishments, who through their immeasurable service delivery have brought success to the proud brands of which they are a part.” says Marna Lourens, Executive Manager for the World Luxury Spa Awards. Setting the basis for service industry standards around the globe, the World Luxury Spa Awards and World Luxury Restaurant Awards pride themselves on providing true recognition to luxury spas and restaurants in their relevant categories during its annual voting phase. Votes are garnered through various marketing channels from guests, showcasing yet again the true value of service excellence.
22
“The most coveted award on the evening is our Global Spa and Global Restaurant of the Year awards. Each year the task to determine these top establishments begins after voting has closed and we announce to our winners if they have been successful. We are six senior managers who take weeks to decide, as voting is not the only criteria we look at to bestow this prestigious award. A multitude of factors come in to play; brand, location, overall guest satisfaction from online reviews, services and facilities, design, and even menu offerings whether spa or restaurant. It is important to look at each establishment as an individual as well, some are on an island, some are in cities or in a desert, it is not always possible to compare apples with apples when defining luxury. This year the focus was on unique design with a touch of classy elegance, and we were as such proud to award Global Spa of the Year to Harnn Heritage Spa at InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, and Global Restaurant of the Year to Ithaa Undersea Restaurant at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. Both of whom encompass the ethos of luxury and supreme service.” says Joanna Evans, Marketing Communications Manager for the World Luxury Awards. The evening was as glamorous as one would expect from a JW Marriott brand hotel; a delectable 6-course fine dining menu adorned each table throughout the night and was paired with fine wines and champagne
from Moët et Chandon. Entertainment fitting of the destination included a Dragon Dance, a Vietnamese based string quartet performance by Nhóm Độc Cầm - Toxic Quartet, and a local Ao Dai Dance, all of which added to the evening’s Asian flair. “The food tonight was exceptionally impressive, and has been during our entire stay at the hotel. Executive Chef Brendon Partridge and his team receive full honours from the World Luxury Awards and all our guests for the tireless effort of crafting these delicious plates of exquisite foods we received this evening.” says Linda Cooper, Executive Manager for the World Luxury Restaurant Awards. “I am proud to know that the awards they themselves received tonight are so well deserved.” After all awards were received and each representative had an opportunity for exclusive photos and interviews on the red carpet, guests were welcomed to the chic and ultra-stylish Cool Cats Jazz Club, a name so apt for the warm red glow it provides, while live musicians entertained crowds late into the night with some fabulous classic jazz music. Luxury establishments from around the globe are welcomed to participate in these exciting awards, to proudly show the world what they have to offer in terms of luxury and excellence.

Council’s business growth programme supports LCWS growth
Padiham based recycling company, LCWS, who specialise in computer recycling and re-manufacturing of electrical items, have received assistance from Burnley Council’s Business Growth Programme towards a hard drive crusher which will enable the business to expand its service going forward. With the onset of the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) which comes into force from the 25th May 2018, companies will have to look closer at how they dispose of confidential information they hold, which should generate business growth for businesses like LCWS, who provide a data destruction service. The additional piece of hardware which has been purchased with assistance from the council’s business growth programme will ensure LCWS are ready to handle new business when the new data protection regulations come into force. For organisations requiring high security data disposal they can now offer both off and on-site hard drive destruction using the crushing machine. The device drills through the hard disk spindles physically destroying the platters making it impossible to retrieve any data. LCWS can perform Hard drive crushing nationwide both on or off site. Destruction can be carried out in front of the client for additional peace of mind. Certification is provided to the client with details of destroyed devices. LCWS operate in the Lancashire region and across the UK and offer a FREE collection service with no minimum or maximum quantity regarding the collection of redundant IT equipment, which makes a real difference to impact on the environment. They offer a free collection service with no minimum or maximum quantity for the collection of IT equipment and are an Approved Accredited Waste Treatment Facility (AATF). Burnley business signs agreement with HS1 to look at track side solar Burnley business, Low Carbon Energy, leaders in multi-service renewable energy, are delighted to have been offered an exclusivity agreement with HS1 to look at delivering track side solar panels to the line between London and the south coast. Ged Ennis, Managing Director, Low Carbon Energy said: “I’m delighted we have secured the exclusivity agreement with HS1 to look at the benefits of track side solar for this high profile rail route. Rail networks could save several million pounds a year in operating costs by inviting investors to fund trackside solar, which is estimated could generate significant electricity to power trains.
Adding: “Track side solar schemes, which will be much more environmentally friendly, could also generate revenue, benefiting from having two guaranteed revenue streams – firstly through the Feed In Tariff for renewable electricity but also by selling the electricity back to Network Rail at a reduced rate. It’s a win-win situation; investors get a return and Network Rail could save millions of pounds on their electricity bill and reduce their carbon footprint, so we are genuinely excited about looking at the options for track side solar.” Low Carbon Energy are also working across the UK in a number of sectors, including commercial, domestic, farming and the public
sector, to deliver solar energy through a range of ways including solar panels, Smart Energy Solution, Batteries & Electric Vehicle Chargers, LED Lighting and Energy Monitoring, and they are delighted to be looking into how they can revolutionise track side rail power. As a Carbon Trust Partner, they’ve helped many SME’s, farmers, public sector organisations and businesses to use solar panel systems to save on energy bills and earn thousands by generating their own electricity using the power of the sun. They’ve also helped turn these companies green, and allowed them to meet carbon reduction commitments.

The road to success
A blueprint for modern logistics 30
1927 - 2017
Celebrating 90 years in style with a new Head Office, a state of the art high bay warehouse and modern driver training facilities: Reaching the highest standards Fagan & Whalley Ltd (FWL). pride themselves on being a truly modern logistics provider offering a first-class service with the highest quality equipment. Nine decades and six family generations from its inception, with 2017 marking their 90th year in business, they still retain all the determination, spirit and drive that their forefathers had on their very first day. Over that period FWL has been a commercial barometer of the Burnley and East Lancashire economy delivering goods to local communities and manufacturers’ customers further afield. This started out with coal from the railway sidings in Hapton village before branching out into textiles, armaments, automotive, aeronautical and general machinery, carpets and flooring, packaging materials, construction supplies and fast-moving consumer goods. Improvements in engineering technology and changes in road transport legislation have increased vehicle payloads massively so that one top of the range 2017 articulated vehicle is able to transport the same tonnage as 17 1920’s trucks. Always an innovator FWL has used the majority of major truck makes for specific pieces of work for different customers. 1982 saw Fagan & Whalley take delivery of their first Scania truck. This started the development of a successful relationship that has seen the fleet grow exponentially from 30 to the present day 170 due to the mark’s reliability and durability. Similar long-lasting partnerships with trailer manufacturers and other suppliers are a fundamental part of the FWL’s success. In their 90th anniversary year FWL has celebrated in style with the opening of their impressive Head Office, Albion House, on the Shuttleworth Mead Business Park, the purpose built state-of-the-art 92,000 sq.ft. high bay warehouse, with the latest in digital logistics technology on Burnley Bridge Business Park and the new multilocation driver training centre, one of the largest of its kind in Lancashire.

Stephen Fagan, commercial director at Fagan & Whalley, said “Like many Road Transport businesses, Fagan & Whalley Ltd started off with a single truck employed on small deliveries around our local villages.” That was in 1927. Today, six family generations and nearly nine decades in business later, we retain all of the determination, spirit and drive that our founders had on their very first day. Now, we pride ourselves on being a truly modern logistics provider, offering a first class service with the highest quality equipment. However, for us there has to be more, because what gives Fagan & Whalley Ltd its true spark is our people; and our ability to listen to precise customer needs, our understanding of what is required and our skill to respond with efficiency, friendliness and genuine care. We are proud of our heritage, and build relationships based on our core values - that’s the road we choose to follow.”
1927 - 2017
Fagan & Whalley are going through a significant period of growth which they attribute to: •
Transport services provide the foundation of the operation, the ability to react to customer requirements is precise, consistent and proven.
•
Distribution services which give comprehensive operational flexibility to any supply chain.
•
Warehousing services to British Retail Consortium (BRC) standards with a systematic approach helping create solutions tailored towards the customers requirements.
•
Training provision both internally and externally from the centre of excellence hosting a portfolio of industry specific training, conducted by fully qualified Department of Transport accredited instructors.

The versatility of the FWL fleet allows them to accommodate loads of any size throughout the UK and Europe. As part of Palletforce and the Transport Association, they can deliver even the smallest loads cost-effectively.

Major purpose built distribution hub on Burnley Bridge Fagan & Whalley took the final plot of phase 1 on the successful Burnley Bridge Scheme developed by Leeds-based Eshton Ltd. in September 2016 and has just opened their newest warehouse just 10 months after the start of the build. The major distribution hub will complement Fagan & Whalley’s existing facilities in Padiham and Coventry and will provide parking for up to 80 trailers, with 10 loading bays and 25,000 pallet locations. Along with the creation of 25 jobs initially, the building will significantly increase the firm’s warehousing capacity. Standing at 19 metres high, the building will be the second largest on the 70-acre site, which has just two units remaining at Magnesium Court between 6,000 sq ft and 12,500 sq ft. James Chapman, managing director at Eshton, said: “Fagan & Whalley are a highly reputable company and we are delighted that they have chosen to site their major distribution facility at Burnley Bridge Business Park. The development is one we are particularly proud of and we’re thrilled that the scheme is almost full. Our vision for Burnley Bridge was to create a thriving business hub, ideally located with connections across the UK and this has well and truly been delivered.” Stephen Fagan, commercial director at Fagan & Whalley, added: “There is a distinct lack of suitable accommodation on the M65 corridor and Burnley Bridge offered exactly what we wanted, with the added bonus of it being just one junction down the motorway from our existing operations and remains at the heart of our long-standing customer base. This extra capacity will enable us to provide a more efficient service to our customers in the UK and abroad. Sam Fagan, Projects Manager at Fagan & Whalley said: “Our dedication to excellence is supported by the opening of this purpose built high-bay semi-automated warehouse facility the supports the local supply chain. The facility is capable of holding 30,000 pallets, utilises best in class technology and will remain adaptable to changing customer requirements.” Located at junction 9 of the M65, Burnley Bridge Business Park provides modern industrial and warehousing accommodation. 650,000 sq ft has been delivered to date. Already home to a range of businesses including Birchall Foodservice, Equinox Building Solutions, Exertis, Townsend Music and YESSS Electrical, the next stage of development, at 600,000 sq.ft. at Burnley Bridge South has just been announced.

Britain needs more HGV drivers The haulage industry is facing a national driver shortage, which threatens to bring industries such as manufacturing, retail and logistics to a grinding halt in the UK. Fagan & Whalley and other leading haulage firms are pro-actively looking at ways of attracting young people into the industry. Fagan & Whalley’s new driver training centre, one of the largest in Lancashire, with and their successful apprenticeship programme are is proving hugely successful in bringing a new generation of drivers into the industry.

Graham Fagan, Operations Director said “Logistics & Transport is a great career, that can take you across the UK as well as offering global opportunities. Well trained drivers can command earnings between £30,000 to £40,000 a year. Yes, it does entail being away from home for spells, but the salary rewards are good.” When InBusiness visited the driver training centre they were delighted to meet two of FWL’s newest recruits. Young driver, Chris Daly, passed his LGV Class One on the day we visited and one of their apprentice mechanics, Tom Loveday.

Take-up on Innovation Drive takes off - leading to the creation of 300 new jobs Burnley’s state-of-the-art Innovation Drive (a hi-tech aerospace and engineering supply park), which was opened last year by the then Northern Powerhouse Minister, Andrew Percy, MP, has really taken off – with a phenomenal occupation rate on site with enquiries from businesses wanting the prestigious Innovation Address going through the stratosphere – leading to the site being fully occupied in just one year! (PS - the new Northern Powerhouse Minister to succeed Andrew is Lancashire MP, Jake Berry who took up the role in June 2017.) Based on the former site of the Michelin Tyre factory, Innovation Drive is a 400,000 sq ft Advanced Engineering and technology business hub, which is now home to major AEM, aerospace and technology business and SMEs including Kaman Tooling, BCW Engineering, Safran Nacelles, FDM Digital Solutions, Elite04 Ltd, Lomax Offshore Couplings, Kavia Tooling, Zzen Engineering and the Lancashire Digital Technology Centre (LDTC). The Minister met with Councillor Mark Townsend, Leader of Burnley Council and Lancashire LEP Director; Pam Smith, Chief Executive of Burnley Council; Tim Webber, Chairman of Barnfield Construction and Mark Crabtree, Chair of Burnley Bondholders and Director of AMS Neve After the opening ceremony, the Minster was taken on a tour of Innovation Drive and visited aerospace and automotive specialists BCW Engineering, who manufacture components for the likes of Aston Martin, Jaguar and Airbus. Burnley Council Leader and LEP Board Director, Mark Townsend said: “I was delighted to welcome the Northern Powerhouse Minister to Burnley to formally launch Innovation Drive. Burnley has a reputation for getting things done, and this site is further evidence of the success of the council’s close working relationship with our local businesses. The phenomenal rate at which Innovation Drive has been developed is commendable, which I’m delighted to say is now almost fully occupied by high growth, high value engineering businesses creating 300 jobs.”

The visit to Innovation Drive was part of the Minister’s wider tour of Lancashire which included a series of official engagements highlighting Lancashire’s significance within the Powerhouse initiative.
The visit commenced with the Minister addressing over 200 Lancashire business leaders and stakeholders from across the county at a special Lancashire Enterprise Partnership conference at Burnley Football Club. Facilitated by Lancashire-born BBC Radio Five Live’s Tony Livesey, the event saw the Minister give an update on progress regarding the Northern Powerhouse initiative and the key role Lancashire is set play in helping to boost the economic prosperity of the whole of the North. The conference also saw the Lancashire LEP become the first Enterprise Partnership in the country to sign-up to the Northern Powerhouse Partnership. By signing-up, the Lancashire LEP will join a diverse range of companies and organisations who have formally committed to work with government to help the North achieve its full potential, including generating new jobs and securing more investment for the whole of the Northern region. Conference delegates heard about the new Lancashire narrative; a distillation of Lancashire’s key sectoral strengths which will be used to help target and promote new investment opportunities across the county. The narrative, which has been developed after extensive consultation with hundreds of local businesses across the county, is set to be adopted by both private and

Northern Powerhouse Minister Andrew Percy said: “Building the Northern Powerhouse is central to our plans to create an economy that works for everyone. “We’re backing the North with the investment and powers it needs to fulfil its huge untapped potential and I’m pleased to see businesses here, working alongside the Lancashire LEP, are pledging their support.” Edwin Booth, Chair of the Lancashire LEP said: “The Lancashire Enterprise Partnership is delighted to be the first LEP in the country to confirm its position as an official Northern Powerhouse partner and to play a full and active role in the Powerhouse initiative. We wanted to take mark this occasion by inviting the Minister to Lancashire so he can see for himself the continuing, credible progress
of the Lancashire LEP and partners are making across a wide range of sectors and markets.” “We also wanted to use the Minister’s visit to mark the launch of the Lancashire narrative, a series of clear, engaging messages and themes which capture Lancashire’s world-class offer. The narrative, which has been shaped and driven by the people and businesses of Lancashire itself, is designed to give all partners and stakeholders a succinct, distinctive and compelling Lancashire story which can be used to promote the county’s assets, celebrate its successes, and highlight its investment potential at every possible opportunity.” Following on from the LEP conference at Burnley FC, the Minister will undertake a series of engagements which further reflect and reinforce the depth and breadth of Lancashire’s economic strength.

Burnley’s business achievements celebrated at the Burnley Business Awards 2017 Burnley celebrated the achievements of its businesses and their employees at the glittering Burnley Business Awards ceremony, held in the stunning setting of Towneley Hall, in June. With 600 guests in attendance, the evening was a buzz with celebration and excitement. A champagne reception served guests on arrival, while classical performers, all the way from London’s Covent Garden, played in the great hall. The evening was hosted by Simon Brierley, managing director of local radio station 2BR, with a variety of entertainment throughout the evening, starting with a moving musical performance from Basics Junior Theatre School and culminating on the dancefloor with local singer Gavin Young. There was everything from magic to opera and everything inbetween before the serious business of naming the winners. 45

Burnley Council’s Chief Executive, Pam Smith, welcomed guests with her opening speech: “It’s great to see so many businesses, dignitaries, and support agencies gathered here tonight to show their support for Burnley and its businesses. The ‘tent’ gets bigger every time as the demand for tickets increases! Which is wonderful – we’ll be hiring a circus big top next! Since the last awards evening, Burnley has headlined in the ‘The Times’ no less, as an oasis of warmth - named the friendliest place in the UK – what an accolade – and so true. We’ve also been named a leading business friendly town. Ranking a fantastic 11th place in the UK as a business friendly town. We are a council that recognises the importance of our businesses and that the success of our businesses impacts on the prosperity of the town and we are becoming well known as a pro-active council when it comes to supporting our businesses. Burnley has a reputation for getting things done and has a strong package to offer investors – a proactive and supportive business environment and a great transport infrastructure, which boasts a direct line to Manchester, making Burnley a fantastic commuter belt opportunity. We are growing above regional trends and have been named a top 5 Boom Town in the North West by economy experts. We are bucking the national trends – we have ambition, strong business partnerships, and the results are there for all to see. Our ambition was to be recognised for growth and a good place to do business; to change how people think and feel about Burnley and to do things differently and get noticed for all the right reasons – and we are achieving all these thing – but we mustn’t rest on our laurels we have to keep being creative, doing things differently and creating new experiences, and we need to continue to work together to take Burnley forward. It’s not just on the business stage Burnley is performing well. Our home grown talent is shining across all spectrums. Our athletes are achieving on a world stage, with Sophie Hitchon returning from the Rio Olympics with Britain’s first ever medal in the hammer throw; we have a local hairdresser chosen to be part of the national L’oreal team as well as being the chosen hair stylist for the England football team; a young dress designer whose clothes have featured in Vogue and at London Fashion week, and a young Endsleigh employee who is the World Supermodel UK. And the young talent you’ve just seen from Basics Junior Theatre, many of whom end up in the west end in some of the world’s leading shows. I’m passionate about creating a confident, skilled and aspiring up and coming generation and I think we are achieving just that.“

WINNER : Ian Mankin Founded in 1983 by Ian Mankin, a London Designer, most of the products were being made in Burnley by family weaving business John Spencer (Textiles) Ltd. When Ian decided to retire in 2005, John Spencer bought the business with a view to developing the business in a new direction with closer connections to the retail market. During that time sales have increased threefold and the business has grown from a small London retail business to a well-known UK furnishing brand. Export sales have grown 400% during the same time and now account for over 15% of turnover. With the newly set up US distribution this figure should grow strongly over the next few years. Ian Mankin has an increasingly high profile in the designer interiors market and is regularly receiving over 20 items of national press coverage a month.
Judges felt Ian Mankin has solved a problem by acquiring a key client and have gone on to develop that client’s business presence. It has gone from an on-line web presence to now having 700 stockists of their stunning MADE IN BURNLEY fabrics and homewares and 4,000 trade customers. They have seen rapid growth and in the space of two years and have transported to new customers in 26 countries.

WINNER : CheckedSafe CheckedSafe is a SaaS platform for digital compliance. They initially developed and App and Management Portal to replace the paper based, mandatory and legally required checks for commercial vehicles. They then advanced the system to allow checking of any piece of equipment, plant, fork lift truck or indeed anything else that requires a paper based check. Put simply if an organisation has to carry out a check on anything as part of the business they can replicate that check and allow the same to be done digitally. With increased health and safety awareness and legislation most organisations need systems in place to help them with compliance. CheckedSafe has created a simple and inexpensive solution to this ongoing problem.
The judges felt that Checkedsafe was a true innovator, speculatively developing an innovative digital technology that will significantly enhance health and safety performance across a number of industry sectors. With other exciting innovations under development this is an innovative start-up company that will certainly go far.
