Our home-grown athlete, Sophie Hitchon nicknamed ‘Glamour with the hammer’, returns from Rio with a Bronze Medal, and another OBE is awarded to one of Burnley’s businessmen, Tony Grimshaw OBE, for his work in international trade. From manufacturing to digital, Burnley is home to several world class companies at the forefront of both sectors. News Rosebud marks 30th anniversary with 220 jobs boost Rosebud Finance, the finance package which helps Lancashire firms to grow, is celebrating a record period of job creation as it marks its 30th anniversary. Rosebud has helped to create over 220 jobs since the start of the year – more than any other six-month period since it was established in June 1986. Funding from Rosebud – which includes both loans and equity finance - has created over 200 jobs at Lancashire companies during the first half of the year. They include the Preston-based software developer Valuechain.com, the Burnley-based 3D print firm FDM Digital Solutions, and the Colne LED manufacturer CFE Lighting. Rosebud is a finance package supporting Lancashire firms to grow and expand their business. It is managed by Enterprise Ventures on behalf of Lancashire County Developments Ltd (LCDL) - the county council’s economic development company.
The origins of Rosebud go back to one of the toughest economic periods in Lancashire’s history. Back in 1986, the county was still reeling from the effects of the early 80s recession, when 31,000 jobs were lost and manufacturing output fell by 14%. It was also suffering from the continuing decline of traditional industries. By October 1986, unemployment was running at 13.3% - more than double the rate of today. Rosebud was initially set up to provide smaller sums of £1,000 to £10,000 to encourage entrepreneurship, although the amounts available have increased over the years. Lancashire Enterprises Ltd (LEL), the county council’s former economic development company, launched Rosebud. Enterprise Ventures, which was once a part of LEL, continues to manage Rosebud Finance on behalf of the county council. Paul Taberner of Enterprise Ventures said:
“Rosebud was set up 30 years ago with the mission to create jobs and continues to do so today, as the last six months have shown. While initially it provided very small sums, over the years it has played a more strategic role in economic growth, providing larger amounts to companies of all sizes. It is now one of the longest established and most successful funds of its type in the UK.” County Councillor Niki Penney, chair of LCDL, said: “From the start of Rosebud thirty years ago to the current day, we’ve continued to change and adapt to meet the needs of businesses here in Lancashire. It’s especially clear that we’re providing the right support for businesses when they return to us to once again to support their growth plans, as we’ve seen with some of our companies. “We’re proud of Rosebud’s history of support and backing for Lancashire’s business. Their growth directly creates jobs here in the county and boosts our economy.”
Burnley - the best place in the UK to make a living Top 10 places to make a living:

People looking to find their fortune should think about moving to Burnley, as new research has revealed it to be the best place in the UK to make a living. Analysis from credit comparison site TotallyMoney.com looked at criteria such as employment rates, average wages and cost of living to find the best places to live in the UK, from a financial perspective. TotallyMoney.com Head of Brand and Communications Joe Gardiner said of the research: “While scenery, shopping and a nice local pub are all important, people will always want to live in areas where they can be financially secure. “This research shows us the true financialhealth of an area, and that a town which offers
high-paying jobs and expensive restaurants won’t necessarily be the best place to make a living. “Here at TotallyMoney.com we are committed to making consumer credit fairer. We hope this research will allow people to make more informed decisions when looking for somewhere to live and allow them to take steps towards improving their financial situation.” Mark Crabtree OBE and chair of Burnley Bondholders said: “No need to compromise - we can offer all of these: financial security; scenery of outstanding natural beauty and ‘nice local pubs’ but with award-winning food. Enjoy the best of all worlds in fantastically affordable homes and much more house for your money.”
Eshton’s £70m Exertis Scheme completes in Burnley The biggest development scheme at Eshton’s £70m Burnley Bridge Business Park has been handed over to occupier Exertis, following completion of the 543,620 sq ft unit. The development will safeguard 350 jobs and is set to create 400 additional jobs. Main contractor, Bowmer & Kirkland, handed over the warehouse unit with office accommodation after a 56 week programme involving the installation of more than 42 km of tubular steel piling and construction of a steel frame requiring 1,900 tonnes of metal. Exertis’ fit out contractors have taken possession of the building, along with the racking
contractors to enable the technology distributor to move in. David Singleton, director at Eshton, said: “This unit is big enough to contain five fullsized football pitches and its completion is a major milestone for Exertis, Burnley Bridge Business Park and for Burnley and the M65 corridor. “The construction method has maximised the potential of the site to create a 24-bay warehouse along with three storey offices and external yard with immediate access to the motorway network via Junction 9 of the M65. “The successful scheme adds to the mixed profile of accommodation and occupiers
at the rapidly-expanding development which is also home to YESSS Electrical, Birchall Foodservice, Equinox Building Solutions and Townsend Music.” The development scheme involved remediation to the site with cut and fill works to level the ground. The 3,911 steel piles were then installed to a depth of up to 16 metres to stabilise the site prior to construction of the foundations, the steel framework and a composite steel fibre suspended ground floor slab, containing 400 tonnes of steel fibres. Externally, the project also included construction of the goods yard and a combination of hard landscaping and planting.
Gerry O’Keeffe, managing director of Exertis UK and Ireland, adds: “We represent 200 manufacturers and hold more than 22,000 product lines in stock, so state-of-theart warehousing facilities in a location that enables us to access the motorway network quickly and easily are vital to fulfilling our commitment to next day delivery and the highest levels of customer service. “We have been delighted by the can-do approach of both Eshton and Bowmer & Kirkland throughout the development of our new unit and are looking forward to moving onto site within the coming weeks.”

News Another global award for luxury spa The Woodland Spa has once again received international recognition after winning the Global Luxury Day Spa at this year’s World Luxury Spa Awards. The lavish award ceremony took place at the exquisite 5-star Grand Hotel Kronenhof Pontresina in Switzerland and once again The Woodland Spa succeeded in seeing off competition from more well established spas in spectacular destinations from as far afield as Sri Lanka and the US. At last year’s event, The Woodland Spa won the Global Luxury Spa Award and Global Emerging Luxury Day Spa, so they were delighted to follow that up with another top global award. Feedback from the event’s organisers made it clear that they were happy to see The Woodland Spa’s continued success and they stated that it is highly unusual for a winner in the emerging category to follow that up with a win in a main category the following year. Crow Wood Leisure Director Oliver Brown, said: “The event was fantastic and the level of competition was incredible, so we’re extremely proud to be flying the flag for Burnley and the North West and challenging people’s perceptions. We have been working hard to deliver a genuinely world class experience and in doing so, we’re demonstrating that our area offers quality and sophistication. “When we opened The Woodland Spa three years ago, it represented a big investment and a big risk, but we felt that we had the location, the staff and the experience to make it happen. We feel that our confidence has been vindicated as The Woodland Spa is being recognised nationally and internationally.” Since the £4.5 million investment in The Woodland Spa in 2013, Crow Wood has doubled its number of staff to 160, the business’ catering arm serves 7,500 covers per month and the business exceeded sales of £5million of in 2014/15.

BONDHOLDERS COMMISSION NEW BURNLEY WELCOME SCULPTURE
A new sculpture to welcome visitors to Burnley has been installed at a key gateway – just off Junction 10 of the M65. Burnley Bondholders, a network of organisations who work together across private and public sectors to promote Burnley, have funded the piece. The sculpture follows on from work the Bondholders funded to install the banners you see on the roadside on the key routes into town, showing Burnley’s key messages of success and growth to visitors and potential investors as well as publicising the Burnley Brand website, burnley.co.uk
Mark Crabtree, chair of the Bondholders and MD of local firm AMS Neve, said ‘We had no welcome to Burnley sign on our main gateway into town. As we’re proud of Burnley’s success and want visitors to know they’ve arrived and feel welcome, we thought it fitting that we should have our own landmark sculpture to mark their entry to our Borough and to make a bold statement that we are a place of confidence and enterprise.’ Local metal artist Dave Palmer of DP Structures has designed the piece, which is in the shape of a 24 foot tall lower case b.

News Burnley designer appointed European Director for Loftex China Ltd Jane Louise Taylor, an international design and colour consultant designing for UK, USA and Asian textile manufacturers is celebrating landing a top job with one of the world’s largest professional towel manufacturers, Loftex China Ltd, based near Beijing, China. Her new role as European Design and Marketing Director will put Jane in charge of the growth of UK and European market, creating towel designs to meet European retailer tastes, from her UK design studio in Burnley. Jane said: “This is an amazing new challenge for me during the year when I’m celebrating my 25th anniversary as a global designer. I’ve worked with many clients across the world, in Pakistan, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, America and many more, designing for high end brands including Chanel and Christian Dior. “With 25 years’ experience designing ribbons and broadcloth for manufacturers both nationally and internationally, for well-known brands including Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Bloomingdales, Macys, Zara Home, Carrefour, Target, Victoria Secret, this is an exciting new challenge and adventure for me.” “I’ve recently returned from the towel factory in Beijing which is literally the size of a large town, where I presented to a huge floor of managers and designers. It is a totally new culture to experience and I’m looking forward to designing for their European markets. “My international career began in my 20’s and I’ve been travelling first class to various cities across the world sharing my design inspiration and creativity ever since. Clients send luxury limos, helicopters and private jets to meet me and take me to their offices! “I was offered a golden opportunity of a permanent position in New York, which was a truly exciting offer, but made me evaluate what I wanted my next step to be. Having established by UK design studio here in Burnley, I turned down the New York offer and decided to focus on my next challenge. It was the start of designing broadcloth textiles as opposed to narrow woven ribbons and I haven’t looked back since. “This Burnley girl is living the dream but my business does demand a lot of time away from my family and hometown, but I receive huge support from my husband, my two sons and my mum and dad. I always ensure that when I am home I spend quality time with family and friends to enjoy and appreciate my home, local Lancashire village and the surrounding countryside. Adding: “I am proud to host my international clients from my design studio here in Burnley, and will soon be hosting a group of esteemed guests from China who I’m sure will be pleasantly surprised at how characterful and lovely the area is.” “I love coming home to Cliviger, a beautiful village on the outskirts of Burnley, to the lush rolling hills of the countryside, with a view of the Cliviger Gorge from my kitchen window. A real escapism from the ever demanding fast global world we live in.” Her fabric design work around the world has made her a sought after figure in the global textile industry.

Burnley has a huge textile history and still has strong links to the textile industry today. Jane is the 21st century version of Burnley’s textile story. Jane descends from a strong textile tradition, with her father being the owner of a textile business and her grandmother who worked in a cotton mill for many years. She always knew she’d follow in the family textile tradition and found the perfect degree course at the Hollings Faculty in the Department of Apparel at the Manchester Metropolitan University. This is where Jane’s career took off, when she saw a summer job pinned to the University noticeboard at a large ribbon manufacturer in Cheshire – after the summer job had ended she was offered a permanent position and she hasn’t look back since, it’s been all ribbons and bows from there on in! Designing woven decorative ribbons and eye catching displays at international exhibitions led to a 12 year contract in New York, working out of offices on Madison Avenue. Providing inspiration on colours and trends for Europe. Other successful textile firms in Burnley include: John Spencer Textiles, British Velvets and Panaz. John Spencer Textiles still have a traditional weaving mill here in Burnley, weaving high end fabrics for the Ian Mankin brand, with a high street store in central London. John Spencer started weaving in Burnley in the 1860’s in the now historic Weavers Triangle. 150 years and six generations later, the company is still run by his great, great, great grandson, David Collinge. British Velvets are one of the last remaining velvet manufacturers in the UK – their velvet dresses theatres across the globe including Russia. Their velvet was used to dress the Royal Barge for the Queen’s Jubilee. Founded in 1932 they are the leading UK weaver of velvets for the soft furnishings, upholstery and contract markets. They have more than 80 years of experience in velvet production. Panaz is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of high quality decorative fabrics and wallcoverings for the Hospitality, Healthcare and Corporate sectors. For more than 25 years as UK fabric suppliers, Panaz has focused on design excellence and differentiation through technical innovation resulting in a diverse and comprehensive range of beautiful, exclusive and durable fire retardant furnishing fabrics. This sets them apart from other UK fabric suppliers, and contract fabric suppliers worldwide. Working with internationally acclaimed Interior Designers, their extensive portfolio of hospitality fabrics grace some of the most iconic interiors around the world, be they contract fabrics for guest rooms in hotels or aboard ships, in lobbies, theatres, casinos or restaurants. Burnley led the world in cotton production in the 1800’s with over 100,000 looms. The textile picture is quite different today, focusing on specialty fabrics and design, but a proud link to our textile heritage.

We’re making it in Burnley Pam Smith, Chief Executive, Burnley Council talks about local government challenges and the focus going forward Perhaps the ‘natural’ response would be to consolidate around ‘core’ services, and simply prioritise our statutory functions: a good waste collection and street cleaning service, fine formal parks, and quality leisure facilities. But Burnley is a surprising place. We are in the top ten for private sector jobs growth. A range of hi-tech firms now define our economic reputation. People here are always looking to take positive steps. That means identifying where extra effort and attention is needed, and putting energy and resources there. The Leader and Executive members are very clear that Burnley Council’s key priority is working for the future prosperity of our borough. One of our main goals is to further improve educational attainment, to better support the growth of our world class businesses The trends are already in the right direction. To make sure economic success benefits all our residents, and so that young people can take up the opportunities that are being created locally, we need to see those trends go further. That’s why we’ve invested in a new partnership with Primary Engineer. The innovative organisation is based here in Burnley, but operates across the country. It delivers unique teacher training and pupil engagement programmes. The aim is to encourage young people to consider careers in engineering and related fields. Creative cross-curricular programmes cover applied maths, science and technology: the crucial ‘STEM’ subjects. The programme is also about raising aspirations and bringing the world of work and creativity into our schools. Burnley Council is complementing the work already being done in schools and colleges. We work closely with the Burnley Bondholders- a network of local business leaders- who have persuaded local tech and advanced manufacturing firms to volunteer the time of their engineers to go into the schools and be part of the programme. The ‘invest to save’ argument stacks up. By putting some resource towards developing young people’s abilities in analysis, teamwork, communication and persistence, we will foster the skills which are vital in a 21st century workforce. It also supports our ambition to be at the forefront of Industry 4.0 whether you judge this to be an evolutionary or revolutionary process we all need to prepare our young people for the opportunities it can potentially offer. With the council’s support and the engagement of schools across Burnley, Primary Engineer has been able to expand its brief. We’re now the first place in the England to have their inspiring programmes delivered for both primary and secondary schools students – and we are clear that this will bring great benefits.

Mercedes-Benz Actros ‘seed’ takes root for Fagan & Whalley The first Mercedes-Benz Actros joins the distinctively liveried, 200-strong tractor unit fleet of Burnley haulier Fagan & Whalley. The Actros has impressed its new owners so much that they have now ordered another two. Supplied by Dealer Ciceley Commercials, the ‘seed’ vehicle entered service last year. Its winning blend of driver appeal, fuel efficiency and image-enhancing style quickly convinced the operator to change its previous policy of buying all of its tractors from another manufacturer. Family-owned Fagan & Whalley is a highly regarded name in the road transport industry, offering a comprehensive range of services and handling anything from a single pallet to a full load. Its trucks are instantly recognisable. “We take great pride in the appearance of our fleet and the Actros certainly has the right image,” declared Graham Fagan, Operations Director at the Padiham-based firm.
“We also endeavour to provide our drivers with the best vehicles, and their feedback has been entirely positive – they particularly like the driveability and performance of the new Mercedes-Benz, as well as its cab layout and high-quality interior. “The Actros is leading the way on fuel economy too, with mpg returns which are right up there with the very best on our fleet. This helps us to minimise the impact of our operation on the environment, an important factor given our commitment to sustainability across all areas of the business.” Fagan & Whalley’s first Actros is a 2545 model and has a roomy BigSpace cab with exemplary levels of comfort. At its heart is a state-of-the-art, 12.8-litre, straight-six powerplant which transmits its 330 kW (449 hp) output to the road via a smooth and efficient, 12-speed Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated gearbox. The two units it has just ordered will
be powered by engines from the recently launched second-generation OM 471 family, which is capable of delivering fuel returns up to 3% better than its already-frugal predecessor – Ciceley Commercials convinced its customer to take this step after providing an Actros ‘Fuel Challenger’ for a trial period. “These are still relatively early days and the evaluation is ongoing,” added Mr Fagan. “We want to see how the trucks perform over the longer term, into years three and four, but the early signs are certainly promising. “We’ll also be monitoring the support we receive from Ciceley Commercials, though having bought a few rigids from them in the past we know already that they run a very professional operation. The Dealer has been keen from the outset to build a relationship, and not just to sell us some metal, which bodes well for the future. On the evidence to date, we’ll definitely be looking to add more Actros to our fleet in the future.”

News Successful Business Growth Programme extended A business growth support programme in Burnley is “delivering the goods” and is being extended to help town centre traders. The scheme was introduced by Burnley Council in 2013 with a £1 million budget with the aims of supporting the local economy, securing new jobs and providing a flexible, fast-reaction approach to boost future growth opportunities for local businesses. The scheme had attracted more than £93 million in private sector leveraged funding into the borough, which features among the top 10 areas in the country for private sector jobs growth. The programme was subsequently extended for a further two years, in part to allow businesses sufficient time to progress from initial discussion and planning to completion. The council’s executive has agreed to extend the level of support available to help grow retail businesses in Burnley and Padiham town centres. Support will be available for new and existing retail businesses looking to grow and expand, creating new jobs and improve the town centre offer. The business growth scheme had exceeded its targets and proved to be a success story. For example 82 companies have received support (against a target of 75), 1,200 jobs created (the target was 250), 208 jobs safeguarded (target 75) and more than £93m of leveraged funding (target - £5m). Councillor Sue Graham, executive member for regeneration and economic development, said: “Burnley Council is committed to backing Burnley businesses and boosting the local economy so we can attract new companies to the area, support the expansion of existing firms and create new jobs for local people. “The Business Growth Programme is delivering what it set out to achieve, and more, in terms of supporting the borough’s businesses. It’s clear a number of smaller, independent town centre traders in Burnley and Padiham are looking to expand their businesses and they would benefit from the support the programme provides, which is why we’ve extended it.” One of the businesses to benefit from the programme is kitchen and bedroom trade supplier Basically Trade. Steve Ward from the firm said: “Basically Trade has been trading for more than 10 years supplying bespoke kitchens and bedrooms to the trade throughout the UK and export markets. “Burnley Council’s Business Growth Programme helped our business develop and expand into manufacturing. Moving to Padiham into 6,000 sq ft factory premises led to us invest in state-of-the-art production machinery and provide of new jobs for the area, including starting an apprenticeship scheme with Themis. “The council’s business support team’s knowledge and advice proved very helpful and really assisted our business in moving forward in a new direction.” The Business Growth Programme is one of several initiatives available to local businesses to help them grow and thrive. Any firm looking to invest or expand is encouraged to contact the council’s business support team on 01282 477213 and talk about the range of support available.

My experience both in practice and in running companies gives me a unique insight into the way that legal services need to be delivered and sets me and the firm apart in terms of the level and quality of service we can offer.” David Lawson, commented: “We are delighted to have Tim on board and are looking forward to growing the corporate side of our business. The region boasts an amazing mix of well established businesses as well as fast growing young companies and the breadth of Tim’s knowledge and experience means he is perfectly placed to advise them and to add real value to their efforts moving forward.”
‘Burnley’s a buzz’ blog! The bacon and sausage butties on arrival were a tasty way to start a busy day. But it was the large helping of positive buzz that made breakfast in Burnley a real appetising affair. The vibrancy that surrounds Burnley Bondholders’ early morning meets gives a Sherlock Holmes clue to why the town was voted the most enterprising in Britain. The best part of 100 business people turned up for the 7.30am start at July’s venue – Birchall Foodservices’ ginormous all-singing all-dancing state-of-the-art warehouse and distribution centre on Burnley Bridge Business Park. Even a couple of minutes spent by the guests in the -21 degree huge freezer area couldn’t put a chill on the bounce in Burnley. And when the borough’s chief executive Pam Smith announced 100s of new jobs
Viva PR who have been committed members of the Burnley Bondholder scheme for some time, sent their new Business Development Executive, Alan Simpson, to experience his first Burnley Bondholder event in July. Alan was so impressed with the buzz in Burnley and amongst the Bondholders he turned to social media to share his experience via his Viva blog.
were coming to the town with expansions at Exertis and BooHoo the ra-ra speech was half expected because success feels to be the town’s middle name. As she said both the Clarets and the town are Premier League. Just a glance at the excellent glossy coffee-table mag BURNLEY, which is funded by the bondholders, screams ‘it’s the place to be’. It’s distributed not only around Burnley but to movers and shakers all over the country. In fact, the furthest point away from the town where it has been spotted is Tasmania! But what’s different in Burnley than in other towns in the north? It can only be down to the bondholders – which now stand
at around 200 – and their working relationship with the council. But the question is still there, why can’t other towns do the same? Simple, Burnley through the bondholders and the council pulls together as one and then SHOUTS about it! So it’s what in PR we bang on our drum about all of the time: ‘Build and enhance your reputation and the rest will follow.’ Burnley has recovered from the industrial decline of the 1970s and 80s successfully revitalising its reputation and is massively building on it thanks to the bondholders. The rest will follow. So, going back to those butties. You see it’s not about the sausage but the sizzle and Burnley is certainly sizzling!

JOHN KENNEDY 1958 -2016
InBusinessBurnley would like to pay tribute to John Kennedy (58), general manager of TRW in Burnley. John was a great Burnley businessman, a valued Burnley Bondholder and a true ambassador for Burnley. John was a champion of all things Burnley and contributed passionately to the Burnley Bondholder Focus Group. He created a dedicated ‘Burnley room’ at TRW’s Eastern Avenue site, to showcase all that’s best about Burnley to TRW visitors and clients from across the globe, and we hope staff at TRW will build upon and preserve the ‘Burnley Room’ as a lasting legacy to John. John was a keen sportsman and loved his home team of Burnley, but his first allegiance was with Glasgow Rangers and he still travelled to home games with his life-long friend and fellow Burnley businessman Donnie Doran. Donnie posted his sadness on social media: “My heartfelt condolences go out to his lovely family who he loved, supported and educated with his wit, life’s experiences and moral compass. He will be sadly missed in my life and I’m sure his beloved Ibrox Park will never be the same again without his presence. Glasgow Rangers really has lost one its true sons.” Mark Crabtree, MD, AMS Neve, Chair of the Burnley Bondholder Focus Group and close friend and colleague of John said: “John has been a committed, enthusiastic and effective ambassador for Burnley throughout his career. Luckily for all of us in the Borough, The Burnley Bondholder initiative provided an amplifier and platform to turbo-charge his commitment and he became a key player in our group. He made sure our messages were heard loud and clear around Lancashire, the UK and across the world through the hierarchies of TRW and ZF, who very much appreciated and relied upon his talents and his drive. His time running the Lucas Apprentice training school also gave him an incredible appetite for the importance of skills development.”
We in Burnley all have a great deal to thank John for and he will be greatly missed.

Envy of the Northwest
Unite. Influence. Achieve. Enquiries have been made to the Burnley Bondholder Scheme from across the Northwest as towns have sought to emulate Burnley’s model for public and private sector partnership working. Established in 2009, the Burnley Bondholder Scheme was the first of its kind in the North West and the first in the UK to direct all private sector contributions to promote the town across the UK and encourage new investment. With over 180 members in 2016 the confidence which the scheme has created to date has been highly infectious. A key aim for the bondholders scheme is strength in numbers to influence agendas.
This united voice is transforming the future of Burnley.

Lasting Relationship
Lasting Relationships Campaign – a sales campaign with a difference – and one of our most unusual IBB cover images. The cover of this edition of InBusinessBusiness, is a little different, the image includes two VEKA campaign characters, an elephant and a dog which featured in a national marketing campaign VEKA recently commissioned. The quirky campaign was so successful campaign it was nominated in the G Awards which recognise excellence in the glass & glazing sector on a National scale. Rebecca Clegg, Brand Manager of The VEKA UK Group explains: “We’re very pleased with our ‘Lasting Relationships’ campaign. It featured the quirky images of an elephant and a dog that was unlike anything in the industry at the time and really seemed to get people talking. “The campaign conveyed how much we appreciate our long-standing partnerships with fabricator customers, and how the size and strength of The VEKA UK Group can really benefit businesses of all sizes. The animal characters were a great talking point with potential customers and we received 66 sales leads in the first month alone of the campaign going live.” “This campaign evolved to incorporate our new Approved Fabricator and Installer initiative with a ‘dating’ website called Fab-match.com, designed to pair Installers with Fabricators in their local area.

30 years together Lancashire-based marketing agency, The Image Works has revisited three decades’ work for one of its longest-standing clients, The VEKA UK Group as the German-owned company celebrates 30 years of UK manufacturing. “The company set up in Burnley in 1986, near to our former studio in Colne,” recalls Trevor Hind, MD of The Image Works. “They had just four extrusion lines then, but their international pedigree and UK aspirations were clear. Needless to say, we were keen to work with them from the outset!” Archive editions of VEKA’s periodical newsletter show the company’s meteoric growth: “Within 10 years of UK production starting, the Burnley plant was turning out 11k tons per annum – amazing considering just 1,748 tons were produced in 1986!” Trevor continues. “In the early days, VEKA worked with a number of agencies – some national – to establish itself as the ‘go-to’ name for PVC-U systems in the UK. Our versatility allowed us to prove ourselves, firstly with a series of ‘one-off’ brochure designs, advertising concepts, and so on; steadily becoming responsible for more and more project briefs. We oversaw the original Matrix 70 campaign – the company’s most significant product launch at the time – helping it to become the industry standard that it remains today.” 1993 saw VEKA announce PLC status, reflecting its early successes and its ongoing commitment to manufacturing here. Where VEKA’s marketing had hitherto targeted only trade customers, its tenth UK anniversary saw the advent of Network VEKA – a pioneering installer support organisation, with a manifesto to redress the lack of public trust in home improvement companies. “The 1980s and early 1990s saw PVC-U systems become the new ‘must-have’ addition to the home,” Trevor explains. “But unscrupulous traders had tarnished the industry’s reputation. We’re thrilled to have worked with Network VEKA since its inception, boosting and maintaining its reputation for quality and ethics. From 20 founder companies, its membership now totals around 140, and few would dispute its position as the original and most respected organisation of its kind.” “We introduced the online portal that allows Network VEKA members to add their branding and details to a suite of professionally designed marketing materials, and similar facilities have been introduced to all customers of what is now The VEKA UK Group. That includes VEKA and Halo Approved Installers and Fabricators – the Group’s second tier of installer support – that we helped launch to an unprecedented take-up, with more than 600 companies joining in its first year!”

Sector Special : Digital
Digital Burnley – a hub of digital innovation The Digital Economy is leading the growth of local economies across the UK and Burnley is no exception. A recent Independent Economic Review on the Northern Powerhouse, by leading economy analysts SQW, identified digital as a key growth opportunity for the North. The report identifies pan-North’s four ‘prime’ capabilities and sector strengths at which we are highly productive and able to compete on national and international scales, as Advanced Manufacturing, Health Innovation, Energy and Digital. The report suggests focusing on computation, software tools/design and content, data analytics, and simulation/modelling and our wider strengths in media. Burnley has several businesses already succeeding on a global stage in these areas which give us a distinctive industry structure and knowledge base advantage. Opportunities for growth in the digital sector are huge, with the digital economy driving UK growth and employment in this sector rising faster than any other area of the economy. The economy is being transformed by digital technologies with digitalisation transforming industry, allowing it to carry out tasks more efficiently and expanding the reach of traditional markets. This transformation presents new growth opportunities for local economies and you might be surprised to learn that Burnley has a considerable number of digital businesses working at the forefront of digital technology, and many non-traditional companies which use digital technologies to aid the daily running of the business. Burnley has several businesses at the forefront of global digital technology including the world renowned AMS Neve who make digital sound desks for the film and music industry, employing highly skilled digital technicians, and FDM Digital Solutions one of the country’s most advanced 3D printing (additive layer manufacturing) companies. FDM engineer some of the most advanced 3D parts to meet the ever increasing demands of the aerospace, automotive and medical industries, to achieve lighter, stronger, safer materials, meeting increased speed to market demands. Greater recognition is needed to raise the profile of our local businesses at the forefront of digital technology, and Burnley and Lancashire are working to put the area on the digital map as a successful digital cluster, to attract digital employees and businesses alike, to rival the clusters in Manchester, Leeds and London. In order to drive the digital agenda and raise awareness of the areas substantial digital cluster the Digital Burnley Group has been formed as part of the wider Digital Lancashire initiative. Burnley College are also engaging with the Burnley business community to raise awareness of how business can embrace digital and lead on ensuring our younger generation learn the skills to grow the digital economy.
Embracing digital technology will have huge rewards for business and for the Burnley economy, making us a more competitive and more prosperous place. 42

Sector Special : Digital
Driving Digital Transformation – using digital technology to drive change Burnley recognises that in order to grow its digital economy it needs to work collaboratively with business at the forefront of digital technologies to drive the growth and to move digital learning up the education agenda. Burnley has led the way with the nationally renowned Bondholder Programme bringing the private sector together to promote Burnley; in establishing itself as a regional centre for advanced manufacturing and driving STEM education in schools. The next challenge for Burnley is to support and grow its digital technology base and to once again be ahead of many towns in forming Digital groups to take this forward. The Burnley Digital Group, Digital Lancashire and Burnley College are passionate about driving digital transformation and helping to transform our business processes through digital technology and collectively they will look at growing digital creativity. They aim to inspire tech education and embed digital in the school curriculum, so we can grow our own digital talent rather than import it.
Digital Burnley Group and Digital Lancashire
The recently formed Digital Burnley Group is working closely with Digital Lancashire, an organisation formed by a group of digital business owners across Lancashire with the support of Lancashire County Council, to grow and promote the areas digital hub. Their aim is to share ideas on how to maximise growth of the digital sector across Burnley, to form a strong digital hub and to look at how to showcase Burnley and Lancashire’s offer to attract more digital companies to invest in the area and encourage collaboration between digital businesses. Mark Crabtree, OBE, MD of one of Burnley’s largest digital businesses, AMS Neve (and member of the Digital Burnley Group) said: “Digital businesses of all kinds form a significant part of our future prosperity and a first trawl initiated by Burnley Bondholders revealed an initial 60 such companies in our borough. At the same time, Lancashire County Council has also seed funded an initiative across the whole of the county – ‘Digital Lancashire’.
44
“The Digital Burnley Group is probably the most advanced cluster in Lancashire and is working with all parties in Burnley to make the town the premier location for such businesses as a contrasting offer to a big city site. We have instant access to open countryside, the ability to drive to work and not sit in endless jams yet just a short direct train ride to a big customer base in Manchester. Of course the market for digital business is global and reached largely through the Internet, and we are blessed with several key infrastructure connectivity businesses on our doorstep with the highest bandwidth connections to the web backbone.
“Our aims are: to establish a thriving communal business hub to enhance the power of the digital clusters and turbocharge the businesses; to communicate clearly the skillset students entering this field will need and actively to assist in their education and experience; to build a large pool of talent locally as an attractive, complementary alternative location to areas such as Media City with whom we are in the process of building links. “Another major opportunity lies in the M65 corridor, where a large pool of Advanced Manufacturing Companies operate, who recognise the need to harness these technologies to secure their competitive place in the decades to come, in what has been dubbed “the fourth industrial revolution” – or “Industry 4.0” in shorthand. We intend to be a leading location to drive this exciting future.” Pete Walker, Director and Vice Chairman, Digital Lancashire said: “The Burnley Digital Group and Digital Lancashire have been established to shine a light on this key industry sector in the county. At the same time it will provide a focus in the county for skills development, recruitment, support and engagement. Our aim is for our organisation to be a beacon for the industry, to accelerate growth in new and existing digital-focused businesses; to enhance digital knowledge and expertise in the wider business community; and to retain these talented businesses and individuals in Lancashire for the benefit of the county, its economy and its people.
Digital Burnley Digital Lancashire appoints Managing Director to drive digital growth Digital Lancashire is delighted to announce the appointment of Stewart Townsend, as their new Managing Director. Stewart will be working across Lancashire to drive digital growth in the region. Stewart has spent the last 15 years working within sales/ business development functions at large corporates Sun/Oracle and hyper growth start-ups’ DataSift/Zendesk, building and running teams to increase revenue across European operations. In 2008 he setup a program to focus on start-ups in the UK whilst at Sun Microsystems and became an integral part of the northern technology eco-system and has been a mentor/advisor to multiple companies in the region. He has now come back to focus on this passion which is enabling businesses to digitally engage across the region. Stewart Townsend, Managing Director, Digital Lancashire, said: “My role at Digital Lancashire will spread across multiple areas with a key focus on building collaborating groups across the region replicating the success of the pilot in Burnley. The aim is to facilitate groups to share knowledge between themselves and across the region, but also to look at collaborating together to win bigger business deals outside of the region and thinking on a larger scale in terms of global business export services/products whilst understanding how digital can assist and enable this. “A key area to address is the digital skills gap. A large focus for Digital Lancashire is working with business to understand what those gaps are and supporting programmes like “Digital Advantage” which is a ground breaking initiative for 16-18 year olds. It brings together a range of industry experts with colleges and sixth forms to deliver digital industry skills and experience into the classroom to become the digital finishing school before they move into industry.” Stewart will also be working closely with Tech North.

FDM at the forefront of British Technological Innovation Engineering the Future of Additive Manufacturing Based at the Digital Technology Centre on the Aerospace Supply Park, Innovation Drive, in Burnley, FDM situates itself at the heart of British technological innovation, offering a range of services such as: produtiona additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, 3D scanning, full reverse engineering and soluble core for carbon manufacturing. FDM are at the forefront of 3D printing - years ahead of other businesses entering the field. It is a business driven by knowledge and experience, with ongoing investment in R&D; they find innovative solutions for clients across a range of industries. They have invested over ÂŁ1million in the latest 3D printing production technology, which is changing the future of digital manufacturing solutions in the automotive, aerospace, medical, space and defence, motorsport and general engineering. Efficiency is the key to 3D printing with huge reductions in lead times and minimal waste.
46
3D Printing
Innovative solutions to aid manufacturing FDM are well positioned to deliver a comprehensive service that can be tailored to a client’s specific requirements. Often clients require a very quick and efficient turnaround to enable their projects to be completed within their deadlines, and therefore reduce time to market and ultimately the cost. 3D printing is the process that uses direct digital manufacturing to c reate an exact layer by layer replication of a CAD model. FDM Digital Solutions can take a client’s CAD data file, optimise for manufacture and produce a prototype or end-user production part to its exact dimensions and specifications. As specialists in 3D ALM (additive
layer manufacturing) the company utilises Stratasys production technology in both FDM and Polyjet processes. The FDM machines run thermoplastics which are robust and good for engineering applications using the same highperformance materials commonly found in injection moulding. The Polyjet machines run multiple UV-cured simulants which are ideal for accuracy and aesthetics often producing complex assembly models in one build. This technique enables clients to practically explore and realise complex and innovative design ideas that would otherwise be too expensive or even impossible to execute using conventional manufacturing methods.

Sector Special : Digital
FDM’s Vision Going Forward With the largest additive manufacturing production facility in the UK the company is already geared up for 24 hour production but is focused on staying way ahead of the competition. FDM’s market positioning as specialists in the field has however only come as a result of hard-work, experimentation and lateral thinking. As CEO Graeme Bond explains ‘the real benefit to business comes from the application of the technology rather than the technology itself’, to coin a phrase in short, ‘engineering practice makes for perfect engineering’. ALM is attractive to many manufacturing companies but it is the skillset that makes it valuable. Companies that invest heavily in their own 3D production grade equipment find that unless it is in almost constant use their engineers and operators do not develop the necessary skill-sets to solve complex engineering problems.
48
FDM’s production centre workers are challenged on an almost daily basis with new products, different design constraints, an ever widening range of materials and all the associated aspects of build and production technology. There is no substitute for experience and this is what gives FDM the confidence to select the most ideal build solution. This knowledge is something which can only be developed through trial and experimentation. Having complete design freedom and not being limited by traditional manufacturing constraints is something FDM encourages amongst its staff and customers. By promoting this innovative mind set and challenging accepted methodologies FDM creates the
space for new engineering solutions to develop. Many clients initially approach FDM for basic production work but once they learn more about the massive potential for improvement offered by ALM they identify more and more projects where they can collaborate and work in partnership with FDM. Working within this environment it is hardly surprising FDM’s engineers are regarded as some of the best in the industry. Bond claims that ‘in reality there is a lot more sophistication to ALM than the media often portrays’ and it has been years of grappling with real world applications that have landed FDM some of their biggest

customers. This is borne out by the fact that many of FDM’s largest customers already have their own fairly sophisticated 3D printing facilities, yet still use FDM for production, guidance, training and advice. Technology moves like a wave throughout different sectors and ALM is no different. In the early days FDM worked closely with F1 teams on car rebuilds and this know-how is now gradually filtering into areas of aerospace, automotive, medical, defence and space. This movement between industry sectors is dictated by shared market pressures such as speed to market and cost reduction programmes. By reinvesting in the latest technologies FDM intends to always be ahead of the next phase so when companies begin to adopt the technology FDM are best placed to be their partner of choice. ALM is an exciting industry to be in and at FDM we enjoy solving complex engineering problems. In reality UK manufacturing is only at the start of what in time will be looked upon as a new industrial revolution. As uptake continues to spread the demand for innovative ALM solutions will only increase. FDM is continually expanding and improving its matrix of services and based on current growth estimates it is likely the company will outgrow its current production facilities inside 12-18 months.
Burnley has a rich history of manufacturing innovation and FDM is a superb example of the town building on its historical achievements in a new technological age. 49

FDM Develop Bespoke Aerospace Tooling with 3D printing for the Airbus A320 neo FDM are at the forefront of creating additive flight quality approved 3D printed parts for leading airliners, and a full reverse engineering 3D data service. Already a Tier 1 supplier to Airbus, FDM is working ever more closely with its major customers to identify areas where ALM can be adopted to manufacture parts better, faster and at lower cost. Within aerospace particularly there is now a drive toward examining parts and analysing processes to determine which could benefit from being 3D printed in the future. FDM have recently created an aircraft part that was formerly made up of 14 pieces which is now one piece! The applications for the aerospace industry are endless. In a recent collaboration of innovative thinking between Safran Nacelle’s
Manufacturing Manager Andy Crosland and FDM CEO Graeme Bond, they solved an Airbus rate production problem using 3D printing technology. Andy Crosland says “When we began the A320neo journey our vision was firmly set on the future production rates.” A clear objective for this was to ensure that we error proofed every operation. One of the early problems we encountered was accurate drilling and countersinking of the Pre-cooler Scoop to the IFS panel. The standard process is to countersink a hole using a “Vanmar Microstop Cutter Cage”, this tool sits flat on the surface of the component when being used. However, the Pre-cooler Scoop has a complex 3D curved surface so the Vanmar would not sit flat, thus causing a
“together we found the optimum solution”

problem for the operator. The results were that sometimes the countersinks would be too shallow or too deep, or not at the correct angle and the operation was so risky that only one operator would voluntarily carry it out. I myself have a passion for innovation and I decided we needed a more creative approach to the solution. An idea came to me that we could 3D print a new drill guide alignment end for the Vanmar with the 3D curvature of the Pre-cooler built in. I had recently visited FDM Digital Solutions and CEO Graeme Bond, who has a background in jig and tool design, we arranged to meet and together we came up with a conceptual idea that allowed a repeatable production solution. Collaboratively we designed a 3D printed shroud that covers the whole of the pre-cooler aperture and at each countersink position there is a recess for the Vanmar to be aligned at the correct drill angle allowing a repeatable drill and countersink operation
3D Printing 3D printing gives total design freedom allowing unlimited design possibilities to be done at once. FDM Digital Solutions engaged with multiple two-way visits engaging shop floor production operatives with 3D printing technology.” Graeme Bond says “Through various tests and tool trials, together we found the optimum solution for Safran Nacelle’s problem. Educating and engaging the team at Safran Nacelles in the approach of design and manufacturing freedoms using 3D printing, and being ready to accept a technology to change traditional manufacturing techniques, was key to the success of this production solution”. Andy says “One of the major benefits of using this tool is that we have had no
countersinking issues on the Pre-cooler scoop and all the operators can use it. Time wise the tool saves us about an hour on each unit and makes the process capable rather than incapable.” Graeme Bond says “Innovation and speed to market with 3D printing gives total design freedom allowing unlimited design possibilities of any special purpose jigs / Tooling for areas of aircraft manufacturing. FDM Digital Solutions have the in house 3D Cad design consultancy and engineering knowledge to turn conceptual cost / time saving ideas into reality which have huge benefits to companies.”
Engineering solutions for doctors and the medical field. FDM is a lead partner with the NHS and and leading universities delivering 3D solutions for medical advancements. FDM have created digitally manufactured insoles for diabetics. Based on scans of patients’ feet, the 3D printed insoles are used to engineer a foot movement away from pressure points, therefore avoiding ulceration and reducing the necessity for amputations among diabetics, much improving the quality of life for patients. FDM is working closely with the NHS to explore untapped channels within the medical field developing digital supply chain manufacturing solutions with additive manufacturing.

EXPAND DIGITAL Digital is the next ‘industrial revolution’ say experts at Burnley College and Themis Expand Digital Event Burnley College and Themis have teamed up with thisisLDA to move the importance of digital up the business and education agenda. ThisisLDA are based at MediaCityUK, which has fast become the largest hub for the creative and digital sectors outside of London, seeing some of the leading organisations across these sectors choosing to relocate to MediaCityUK over the last few years. The college recognise Digital is one of the fastest growing industries in modern time, and have worked with thisisLDA to help grow Burnley’s digital hub, which will influence every sector and have an impact of some kind on everyone. Business experts see the Digital Skills Agenda as the next “industrial revolution”. The speed in which it is growing is creating a large skills gap across all industries in which digital impacts. It is predicted that in the next two years alone, there will be an estimated 750,000 unfilled digital job roles in the UK and in the next 20 years, +10 million jobs will be replaced by digital alternatives. Whether you are a student, parent, business or educational institution, there are 3 types of digital users: 1. Digital Believer – fully on board, committed and interactive 2. Digitally Frustrated – “All the gear but no idea” – want to progress but don’t know how and don’t understand how digital can work for them 3. Digital Dismisser – Digital is a fad/it’s not for me and won’t impact me or my business Whichever category a user falls into, they will have at least one digital interaction every day. Digital is not going away, it is going to get bigger and we need to embrace it. The College is keen to support its many stakeholders to expand their Digital Agenda.

EXPAND DIGITAL Digital Industry Experts talk to businesses about the future of digital
Expand Digital was created in partnership by Burnley College, Themis and thisisLDA, with the first event taking place on 19 May at the Burnley College campus. Expand Digital was initially launched as a vehicle to drive the Digital Agenda in East Lancashire through this first event. The event involved a series of industry experts talking about the past, present and future of digital, to an audience of ‘Digital Believers, Digitally Frustrated’ and Digital Dismissers’, providing businesses with a place to go to feel comfortable asking any questions on digital, to be able to talk to each other about the common issues that businesses are facing, and to be able to identify ways in which they can grow and develop to stay in front of digital growth. It also provided a platform to bring agencies, services and industries together to ensure that digital was at the top of the agenda.
What now? Expand Digital will focus on supporting multiple users: • •
• • •
Employers Schools - Teachers - Careers Advisors - Students Parents and Guardians Individuals The Media
Tackling the digital skills gap, filling job vacancies, training people for jobs for the future, raising awareness of future skills and research and development, cannot be achieved by one person as it needs a whole community approach to support it. But how do we address something which stakeholders do not see as a problem? Expand Digital will be built around a shared vision and strategy to encourage users to tackle or embrace the digital revolutions, to support the believers, the frustrated and the dismissers. Everyone can expand their digital in many ways and no one person or organisation will be able to provide a complete service to cater for an individual’s needs. Expand Digital will bring people, sectors and organisations together to create a support infrastructure providing traction to embrace the Digital Agenda. Expand Digital will be used as an overarching identity, ensuring quality and integrity are embedded in all activities being undertaken. Where support can be sought whether you are a company with a digital problem, an individual looking to increase your skills, or a parent looking to understand the future jobs market for your son or daughter.
53
Sector Special : Digital
How do we make this happen?
Whilst the launch event in May was important, the key to the success of Expand Digital is its ‘legacy’. It is vital that it becomes an identity that can bring lots of activity together, across a wide variety of stakeholders. Expand Digital will form part of a ‘movement’ with multiple delivery points, used by the College and Themis, plus external partners, in order to deliver a comprehensive digital offer. Schools It is clear that digital is a new and emerging market, with a whole host of careers and jobs of the future not yet even created, however there is a clear vision that there will be a real skills need. In order to ensure that businesses have the right staff when these new developments take place it is vital that the importance of digital is pushed in schools. Students Expand Digital intends to create a school curriculum and support programme, designed to develop a range of digital skills within local youngsters, ensuring they are competitive within a currently unknown jobs market. This curriculum will be embedded into the College’s school liaison activity as well as offered as school specific enhancement opportunities and ‘clubs’ created for individuals to take part in at any point. Additional activities supported by Expand Digital within schools include: • Study/work/play enhancement activities • Social clubs: - Tech literacy - Management Information Systems network for kids • Homework • Curriculum support • Competition/games
54
Parents and Guardians There is a real need for any work in schools to be supported by work with parents. These are the biggest influencers on Further Education and University choices, and so it is essential that we identify the vast array of high profile career opportunities within the digital field, either as an expert within the digital industry or a digital expert within another industry. Activities supported by Expand Digital will include: • Parents’ coding clubs • Education of career options via industry facts, jobs for the future and myth busting Burnley College The school’s curriculum previously mentioned will be further enhanced within Burnley College Sixth Form Centre, Themis, Adult Learning at Burnley College and UCLan Burnley with the Expand Digital team working cross College to ensure that digital is considered and implemented in all offers. This will ensure that our students leave College better equipped and more able to adapt in the digitally developed world. The College will provide a curriculum which supports core skills development, not role specific skills, provision will focus on skills and attributes rather than curriculum and subject specific knowledge.
Employers Employers need to be supported in a whole host of ways, from funding, staffing, training and business growth support. In order for Expand Digital to be able to successfully deliver all of these requirements it will work closely with a range of partners, from recruitment services, to business growth mentors, and including business and European funding organisations. It will also host a series of smaller, tailored events, aimed at specific industry sectors and focusing on how digital will impact them specifically. These events will include: • Manufacturing – The impact of digital on the production line • Sport – Harnessing digital to enhance human performance • Supply Chain – How digital impacts on delivery • Health – combining surgical and digital expertise to provide a more efficient and effective result for the patient Expand Digital will also work with partners to provide industry insight, networking forums, round tables, vacancy matching services and portals to ensure employers have easy access to all above services.
EXPAND DIGITAL Creating the next generation of digiteers! company announced the appointment of its first authorised distributor in continental Europe in June this year. Organised by Burnley Council, the Burnley Bondholder Scheme is a network of organisations who contribute financially or in-kind to promoting Burnley as a place to live, work, visit, invest and do business. Welcoming CoolKit managing director Rupert Gatty to the scheme, Burnley Council chief executive Pam Smith said: “Bondholders are passionate about Burnley and believe more of the right people need to know about our world-class aerospace industry, our skilled workforce, our new schools, colleges and university, nationally significant industrial heritage and breathtaking countryside. “We are very proud to welcome CoolKit to the scheme, as their success in recent years exemplifies everything that is great about business in Burnley.
Burnley-based CoolKit has appointed its first authorised distributor in continental Europe for its full range of refrigerated vans, van conversions and associated products. Netherlands-based ClimaRunners, a specialist temperature controlled converter, building a range of vehicles including Iveco, Mercedes, Fiat, Volkswagen and more, has been appointed as an authorised distributor of Coolkit products in the Benelux region – Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg. CoolKit managing director Rupert Gatty said: “The appointment of our first authorised dealer in continental Europe for our full range of products is a major milestone in our planned expansion into international markets. We look forward to working with ClimaRunners, who will be supplying our refrigerated van conversions and associated products in the Benelux region.” CoolKit is expanding rapidly having enjoyed record sales in the last few years. Having doubled the size of its facilities in 2015 and invested heavily in new manufacturing equipment to help meet increased demand, the company now employs over 70 people, supplying a full range of refrigerated vans, van conversions and associated products including its own range of vehicle lining kits and mobile aftersales support engineers. CoolKit sales executive Mark Beaton said: “We are looking forward to working with ClimaRunners in order to sell our products in the Benelux region, where they already have a substantial operation. “The relationship was established initially as Coolkit designed and developed a very specialist and bespoke build for ClimaRunners’ customer Ciso Transport, building a vehicle capable of carrying six pallets, with maximum internal width and height which also had a sleeper cab. The specification requested risked compromising thermal efficiency and brought about a number of challenges which all were overcome with a new product and some specialist development works by CoolKit. Ultimately the customers’ requirements were delivered with an ATP
