Welcome to the spring summer issue of The Vine!

T

his issue is packed with the latest in new season fashion, fitness, food and trends for your home. Our resident personal stylist, Julie Zanes, shows us how to wear the staple white tee and a pair of jeans three ways on Page 56, and on Page 80 we catch up with our inaugural Burnside Village Foundation recipient, Imogen Walters, who gives us an insight into what it takes to become a prima ballerina.

We went on location to the picturesque Carrick Hill to shoot the story, ‘A Fine Romance’, on Page 32. On Page 86 Salvatore Pepe, owner and chef at our new restaurant Pepe Cucina joined us in the kitchen to bring you flavoursome and fresh seasonal cuisine. Plus we are delighted to introduce you to this season’s ambassador, Kate Freebairn, who features on our cover and on Page 18. As well as bringing you the weather every week night, Kate loves spring summer, enjoying nothing more than a beach day on one of South Australia’s endless choices of beaches. Whether you are on the beach or at home, relax and enjoy the magazine,

Greatest gift The ethereal, boho creations at Camilla were all that was needed to inspire Christy Kretschemer, the winner of The Fashion Illustrative competition. “I was strolling through Burnside Village one afternoon for inspiration and I was drawn to Camilla because they had recently arrived,” Christy says. She fused the casual elegance of Camilla perfectly with elements of Burnside Village; the elaborate background is a nod to the vinecovered arches. This attention to detail was the reason Christy

stood out to the judges and was named winner; not only is her watercolour striking, it reflects Burnside Village perfectly. Having her work featured in a retail setting isn’t a first for Christy – she’s a former visual merchandiser and is used to seeing her designs adorning store windows. “When the competition came up, I used my love for creating pieces that make stores look visually appealing.” The mother of two has taken a break from her work on a professional level, but her personal collection is expanding. Christy’s watercolours have a

delicacy to them, with soft black strokes, defined by pops of colour. Fashion, children and animals are her muses. Her art may be more of a hobby these days, but Christy’s win and being featured on a limited edition gift card has inspired her to pick up the brush more regularly. “Seeing my design on the gift card is the best part. It’s been a great thing for me to feel motivated to work on my own art.” Christy’s limited edition gift card is now available at concierge until stocks run out. THE VINE

Forward THINKING Discover what Audi has to offer with their latest innovative design. The first S model in the Audi Q7 model line has been released, and with it comes some world firsts. With 320 kW and 900 Nm of torque, the new Audi SQ7 TDI is the most powerful diesel SUV on the market. It also leads the competition in numerous other technical fields. Its newly developed 4.0 TDI engine features an electric powered compressor giving the SQ7 TDI outstanding offthe-line performance, yet it consumes on average just 7.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. The Audi SQ7 TDI changes gears quickly and efficiently, and at high speeds allows coasting at idle. The vehicle is offered with an optional driving dynamics package, comprising three

technology modules: sport differential, electromechanical active roll stabilisation and all-wheel steering. The rear wheels turn as much as five degrees, making parking easier. It is unmistakably an Audi, with the sculpted Singleframe radiator grille, distinctively highlighted wheels and flared quattro-style blisters. The standard LED and optional Matrix LED headlights, plus the dynamic rear turn signals underscore Audi’s leading role in lighting design and technology. The new SQ7 TDI is available in 12 colours, and is available with five or seven seats – the optional third row folds up and down electronically. audisolitaire.com.au

he doors at high fashion jewellery company Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen were wide open for Charlotte Lynggaard. Her father, the company’s namesake, worked hard for decades to create a unique brand and she was a perfect fit to join him. A lifetime of knowledge of the jewellery industry paired flawlessly with her creative side. It was no wonder Charlotte inherited the talent, watching her father draw, paint and model anything around him into jewellery – even chocolate wrapping. “From when I was little, I was allowed to hammer and play around with tools and I made small rings,” Charlotte says. Talent wasn’t the only thing Charlotte inherited, she and her father share their traits of perfection, ambition and passion. “Even though we each have our own personal style, you can still see that our designs derive from the same passion and design DNA.” The brand is nearly 50 years old and boasts several Lynggaards; Charlotte’s brother is the managing director, her husband is the commercial director and she and her father have paired up as designers. They are no doubt a close unit, but sometimes space is the key. “There must be room both physically and mentally, to disappear into our own territory. It is one of the secrets behind our fantastic cooperation.”

The Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen workshop is based in Denmark, lending inspiration to their designs. “A major source of inspiration is always life’s many contrasts – such as the Scandinavian nature combined with inspiration from the strict Japanese style. Whether it comes in the form of furnishings, clothing or here in my latest jewellery designs. To me designing is often about the contrast in colours, styles, mixing contemporary with the classic, the wild with the stylish or the simplicity with daring.” The latest collection, Magic Circus, is a tribute to the travelling circus of the 1930s and ’40s. The vibrant, joyful spirit of the carnival is brought to life by the energetic colours. The petite Circus Bracelet perfectly illustrates the sophisticated playfulness. One piece can take years to create from idea to final product. Lotus, the collection closest to Charlotte’s heart, took three years to perfect, with just the right colour combinations and designs needed to create a luxurious bohemian look. No matter the time it takes to create, Charlotte knows great design isn’t about following the rules, but a strong understanding of quality and craftsmanship. “My father always told me to follow my gut feeling and to believe in my vision.” Aurum Jewels at Burnside Village is the only destination for Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen jewellery in South Australia.

BODY OF WORK

Artists aim to bring their canvas to life, but Emma Hack is already one step ahead.

E

mma Hack emerged as an artist in her own right, after years of body painting for some of the world’s most luxurious brands – a skill she picked up, face painting for pocket money as a teenager. In 2002, Emma wanted to paint a collection just for herself, so Petal was created, along with her signature style. It featured painted models, contorted into poses representing flowers. Fourteen years after that collection, and 26 years since she began body painting, Emma has brought countless collections to life. And to think it all began as a weekend job. Emma says she isn’t even halfway to where she hopes to be one day. Undeniably, she’s in a pretty good spot. She was in Korea recently for her first solo museum exhibition at the Savina

14

THE VINE

Museum of Contemporary Art, where 49 of her works featured over three floors. Emma’s designs are so intricate, it’s a surprise to discover she’s not a fan of sketching. Instead the ideas grow in her mind over a few months. Inspiration comes in many forms: nature, other cultures, travel, patterns and colours. A shoot day can take between eight and 15 hours. Emma paints the model, running back and forth between her subject and the camera to ensure every detail is perfect. That’s not counting the prep time painting the background beforehand. Emma’s style is so recognisable, though her techniques are evolving. “The hardest thing is to keep on creating better works than the last,” Emma says. “I am sure it is a continuous battle for most artists, to stay true to what they desire to create but to also sell their work and

survive. I ultimately just want to create beauty that makes us think about and appreciate the world we live in.” Emma’s work will be on display at Burnside Village at her pop-up gallery from September 19 to October 9, featuring new collection Chinoiserie, last editions and some never before seen works.

ne day Kate Freebairn’s office is the Barossa; the Adelaide Hills the next. The TEN Eyewitness News weather presenter loves getting out and about to experience what South Australia has to offer. “It’s the best part of the job! I am on location somewhere different every night, which makes every day unique.” Kate, who joined Network Ten nearly a decade ago, is looking forward to another summer of visiting SA’s regions and hanging out at home by the coast – and she knows just what she’ll be wearing. “I think summer is all about a fresh, undone look”, says Kate, who is Burnside Village’s spring summer ambassador. “My style for the warmer weather is minimal and simple, so a white linen shirt is a must – whether it’s throwing it on over bathers or layering it up for lunch with the girls.” She’s also loving the earthy tones around this season. “I’m dying over

continued from page 19 the beautiful rust orange colour – I think that will be huge this season and I can’t wait to wear it!” As Kate prepares for another season of bringing us scorching temperatures this summer, she shares some of her favourite spots around the city and beyond. WINDING DOWN

My favourite spot to wind down is at the beach. I live on the coast so I love packing a towel and good book to walk down to claim my little bit of sand. If I really want to escape for the day – I’ll drive down to my favourite beach at Port Willunga. RETAIL THERAPY

Scanlan Theodore is my guilty pleasure. I find it so hard to walk out without buying something amazing. My excuse is that they’re investment pieces that will carry through from season to season. I love to keep active, so Lululemon is my go to. And Mecca Cosmetica is the best for stocking up on beauty products! SPOT OF ADVENTURE

The airport! Exploring the world is one of my greatest joys in life – I love visiting new countries and the feeling of not knowing what’s around the corner or what’s coming next. DEEP PAMPERING

Endota Spa is heaven. There is nothing better than their 60 minute massage ... except their 90 minute massage. GETTING AWAY

Port Elliot. Long lazy days at the beach, pit stops at the Port Elliot bakery, and late afternoon cheese platters and wine on a balcony. WORK IT OUT

My favourite way to exercise is at the ballet barre! I’m the brand ambassador for Aleenta Barre – I’m there three times a week mixing it up between the Barre Burn toning sessions and the Barre FIT cardio classes. It’s my most enjoyable way to exercise and it still gets the results.

SUMMER

SILHOUETTES

M

odern femininity is the key for women this spring/summer at Zara. Think black and white inspired by the glamour of the 1920s. Silhouettes are sculpted among fluid fabrics, while lace accents enhance floaty dresses in floral patterns with flounces, exposed shoulders and contrasting frills. All this makes for a sexy look with a contemporary edge. Boudoir elegance returns with pyjama sets and slip dresses in black, white and powder pink silks and satins – you’ll find details of lace egding its way in. Natural textures such as linen and rustic handmade styles create the season’s new dress code. Relax your look with wrinkled jackets, trousers and shirts. There’s a nod to the free spirits, with tie dye patterns and crochet details. As spring unfolds, sequins and metallic fabrics for day and night create deconstructed silhouettes. For the men, inspiration comes from vintage resort style, with faded striped pieces and soft tailoring. Military hasn’t gone

anywhere; seek out camouflage, faded washes, asymmetrical details and patches. Search for safari style with Mandarin collar shirts and pleated trousers. There’s a nod to the nautical in the form of stripes and for comfort and style, sportswear is a constant thread, combining practicality and modernity. A hybrid of tailoring and sportswear keeps it professional and informal all at once. Girls’ summer styles are colourful, covered in suede, patches and flaps – plenty of pink and florals. The trend for the homemade look appears in homespun edges and rustic fabrics. Boys are clad in neutral and natural tones in bohemian styles. Skater styles of the ’70s make a comeback and sandy hues evoke the tones of an African safari. Drop into Zara at Burnside Village to keep up with the ever-changing styles.

R

ebecca Morse is an award-winning journalist who has been presenting Adelaide’s TEN Eyewitness news for the past decade. She also writes a popular weekly column in the Messenger newspapers. She and her husband James have three daughters, Grace, 13, Milla, 7, and Frankie, 4, plus a rescued dalmatian named Henley. What are your values? How do you live your life in alignment with these? How do you know when you’re not? Spending time with my family is the most important thing to me. At the same time, I want to be a strong female role model for my three daughters by working hard to achieve success in my career. If I’m happy and balanced I’m a better mum and that includes finding time to catch up with my girlfriends or scheduling a sneaky pamper session. When was the last time you took time out for yourself without the distractions of a phone or family? I aim to have a massage or facial at endota Burnside at least monthly, both to relax and have some me-time but also to try to rescue my skin from the heavy makeup I have to wear on camera and that annoying ageing process!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATE ENDOTA SPA BURNSIDE TURNING ONE YEAR YOUNG WITH POP-UPS WITHIN BURNSIDE VILLAGE AND GIVEAWAYS FOR LOYAL CUSTOMERS FROM OCTOBER 6 TO 8.

Do you have a beauty must have that you can’t live without? Moisturiser with SPF. I spend a lot of time at the beach during summer so I need to protect my skin from sun damage. And Hydropeptide Solar Defence Booster is my personal favourite from endota spa Burnside. I also have to mention the Instant Brows from the new endota COLOUR™ make up range – it is so quick and easy to use when I am on the run! Plus I am told it has skincare ingredients in it to conceal like make-up and treat like skincare! How would you suggest to others they take some “me time”? Try to earmark at least one hour a week, just for you, whether it be to read a book or a magazine, do some exercise or book in a treatment. Don’t feel guilty about it. Think of it as a mental health investment.

D

ancers from The Australian Ballet sparked the interest of Imogen Walters, but the bold, yet incredibly graceful dances by their Russian counterparts felt more like home. Imogen, 15, is the inaugural recipient of the Burnside Village Foundation grant and has had tunnel vision for the Bolshoi Ballet Academy ever since watching a Russian ballerina transform into Odette for a performance of Swan Lake. “I thought she was amazing, I wanted to be like her,” Imogen says. Until then, her ballet classes had been fun and games; more social than serious. Imogen’s teachers clearly thought she had a special talent, but the highlight of her career so far had been performing as a snowflake in the front line during The Nutcracker. “I thought I was a big shot, it was my shining moment,” she laughs.

80

THE VINE

It wasn’t to be the pinnacle of her career though. Imogen will be in Russia for the next 10 months, studying full-time at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Her training has increased to five days a week, up to three hours a day. She’s started online school – her stay in Russia doesn’t incorporate education. The technique and training system used at Bolshoi – vaganova – isn’t taught here in Adelaide, so Imogen expects she’ll have her positions and style corrected. But one attractive attribute she already has is her height. The Australian Ballet prefer shorter dancers, but in Russia, her height is welcomed – all 171.5cm of it. The Summer Intensive program offered by Bolshoi and held in New York last year gave Imogen a taste of what was to come. Though the days were long and hard, she came back, resolute in her dreams to dance on the world’s stages. Here’s what a typical day in Imogen’s life at the Summer Intensive looked like.

village culture

“I’ve had tunnel vision for the Bolshoi Ballet Academy ever since watching a Russian ballerina transform into Odette for a performance of Swan Lake.”

A day in the life of the Bolshoi Summer Intensive program 7.30am Breakfast We mostly ate healthy food. The nurses spoke to us about making sure we were eating enough and they’d check in to make sure you were being healthy.

9am Studio I’d get to class with my friends about half an hour before so we could stretch. For the first class, we’d do classical ballet and technique. It was a lot harder for me because it’s a different style. Our teacher only spoke Russian, so we had a translator.

11.45am

Pointe After a 15 minute break, we’d have pointe class and it nearly killed me! I usually do half an hour a week, which is not enough. In Russia, they

do three hours every day. The first four days, I thought my feet were going to drop off. They went numb and the skin was peeling. I didn’t really enjoy it for the first three days – I thought “what did I get myself into”. I got out of bed one morning and didn’t know if I could make it to class that day, but it got better by the third week. It was the first time I’d used toe tape. My friends gave it to me and once you put it on, you can keep dancing. Pointe shoes die so quickly, especially because I have strong, flexible feet. I took five pairs and I had to glue my last pair together for the performance at the end.

12.45pm Lunch

grammar is harder to get used to. Then we’d have character or repertoire class.

5.15pm Dinner Dinner was on campus, and then we’d have outdoor activities so we could socialise. If the menu wasn’t great that day, we’d order Chinese food or pizza when we got back to the room.

10.30-11pm Lights out I’m a night owl, sometimes I get up because I’ve got things on my mind, or because I want to stretch, or do an ab workout. I’ll watch live streaming if there’s a ballet competition on.

For lunch, I would usually have salad with tater tots (potato gems). We were based at Westover Private College in Connecticut, so we’d just eat on the campus.

My tip – if you don’t already, make sure you have a green juice a day, great for the skin mind, body and soul! What are your tips for people who may not have been too active in winter? I love tricep dips and bicycle crunches for quick visible changes. Plus crank up the fermented foods for a flat stomach and healthy gut. Start slow – but now! Excuses don’t get results – pulses, plies and pointe do! Any special warm-ups or classes or workouts that you can recommend for spring? Yoga Barre is lovely to start with if you haven’t been too active in winter. It’s a great way to get the body flowing again, while stretching, and lengthening the muscles.

While we all know our faces change over time, Dr Chris Koulos from Burnside Cosmetic & Skin Cancer Centre says what you think is just ageing, could actually be underlying volume loss. Youth generally comes with well-defined cheeks, jawline and upper face. Losing this volume can make us look older than we feel. The clinic offers dermal filler treatments to assist in restoring lost volume, defining cheekbones and enhancing your lips. Made from complex sugar chains found naturally in the body, dermal fillers attract water and provide hydration to the skin. They can be used to soften lines, wrinkles, correct asymmetries and restore facial balance in cheeks, the lower face and lips. Treatments take around 30 minutes and results are almost instantaneous, lasting for up to 24 months.

Gym style FOR THOSE WHO WANT A PRACTICAL YET ON-TREND STYLE FOR THEIR WORKOUT, THE TEAM FROM CLIP JOINT RECOMMENDED THE BRAID-MEETSPONY. THE LOOK IS EASILY CREATED AT HOME AND IS SURE TO KEEP YOUR LOCKS SWEPT OFF YOUR FACE DURING A WORKOUT. AND THE BEST PART – THIS LOOK CAN TAKE YOU FROM THE GYM TO THE OFFICE.

SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT

WORK IT OUT Left the summer exercise prep a bit late this year? Jetts Burnside Manager Chad Obst says it’s not too late to get in shape. “It’s never too late to start a new exercise regime. If you’re coming off an inactive winter, it’s best to slowly build your fitness back up, speak to a personal trainer to get a balanced and tailored program specifically designed for you.”

For children and adults alike, Townsend Orthodontics will provide you with the best in modern and evidence-based orthodontics. In addition to traditional orthodontic methods, they also use the Ormco Insignia brace system and Ormco Lythos scanning system. With these two systems the results are precise and predictable. This computerised system

combines digital treatment planning with custom fabricated brackets and wires, tailored to your specific dental anatomy. A 3-D image is produced of your teeth avoiding the messy and uncomfortable “old-style” dental impressions. This progressive technology is currently the most advanced in braces systems and allows you to see the end result before your treatment even commences!

A favourite is the Pure Eden smoothie, which contains apple, pineapple, grapes, kale, spinach, cucumber, lemon, banana, mint and coconut water blended with Boost’s all greens booster. Because it uses whole fruit and vegetables, the smoothie is an excellent source of fibre keeping you feeling fuller for longer. Boost Juice is always on the lookout for new ways to make healthy easy, which is why opting for whole fruit and vegetable smoothies is a great option thanks to its balance in nutritional benefits.

When you’ve had a busy morning shopping, stop into Cibo for a quick pick-me-up coffee and cake, or something a little more if you’ve really built up a hunger. Their Italianstyle blend, made with Arabica beans, pairs perfectly with their range of sweet treats, including a cannoli or slice of cheesecake. Don’t restrict yourself to the classic latte – branch out and try different items from the drinks menu, whether it’s a vanilla chai latte, Americano or something iced. In the warmer months, it’s time for gelati, for the tastiest way to cool down.

Known for their delicious chocolate and dessert combinations, Cocolat also deliver some tantalising lunch options for the warmer weather. Try their smoked salmon salad on sourdough bread with creamed horseradish or indulge in some avocado salsa. Try an iced drink to replace your winter favourite. Using a ganache and made from a combination of cream and chocolate, Cocolat Burnside manager Arty recommends their iced chocolate, iced coffee or iced mocha to cool down. “An iced mocha with our new lime and yoghurt tea cake is a great option.”
