Welcome to the autumn winter issue of The Vine!

T

he autumn winter season is here and for us that means coats and boots, falling leaves and entertaining friends with good food and wine near the fire. Issue 14 of The Vine celebrates the new season and is packed full of the latest trends in fashion, beauty, food and home, all available from your favourite stores at Burnside Village.

Since the last issue of The Vine, we welcome new fashion retailers Tommy Hilfiger, Noni B and Gorman and the newest lunch option in the Village Market, Rolld. On Page 52 we chat with Camilla Franks, the woman behind the Camilla brand, who visited the Burnside Village store late last year. And with the Peter Alexander brand turning 30 this year, we catch up with Peter himself on Page 54 to find out more about his anniversary collection, his creative mind and his mum. We go on location to the picturesque Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, who are also celebrating a milestone birthday, to shoot the kids fashion story, Babes in the Wood on Page 60. Still talking fashion, our resident personal stylist, Julie Zanes, uncovers what she is loving this autumn winter season on Page 58. Plus join Rosa Matto in the kitchen for some delicious winter recipes perfect for a cosy gathering. If that’s not enough, you also have a chance to win a trip for two to London, thanks to Singapore Airlines and Flight Centre. You can find out more on the competition on Page 9 or your potential winning destination on Page 82. Enjoy this issue, stay warm and see you soon at

ELIZA COLLIER

Rosa Matto describes herself as a teacher first, chef second. Her long career as cookery teacher, caterer and consultant spans three decades. Rosa’s greatest passion is growing or buying fresh fruit and vegetables from Village Fresh Fruiterers and supporting local providores and artisans – she brings that fabulous produce into her rather chaotic kitchen and creates simple, healthy dishes that ooze flavour. Her other obsession is travelling with groups of like-minded people so her recipes originate from many destinations – they are unpredictable, exotic and easy to love.

Eliza is responsible for the sleek hair looks on Page 52. She has been a hair stylist for six years and started her career as a Clip Joint Salons apprentice. Eliza has worked her way up to assistant creative director, working closely with the brand’s creative director Atilio Dusa on photo shoots and Adelaide Fashion Festival. The best part of the job for Eliza is being creative and working on an ever-changing canvas to make her customers happy. When she doesn’t have scissors in hand, you’ll find her perusing Camilla at Burnside Village.

Nectario Karolos Papazacharias is a visual artist, who has been focusing on fashion photography for the past decade. You’ll find his gorgeous work on Page 28. Nectario is a fairly new resident to South Australia, so the beauty of the landscape and warmth of the people capture him. The photographer loves stopping into Burnside Village for a coffee and a peek at what’s new at Zara.

How did the collaboration with Liz Payne come about? My textile designer in our design team, the fabulous Bonnie, had had her eye on Liz Payne’s work for some time. She showed me, I thought it was the best thing I’d seen in Australian embroidery and tapestry ever, and gave Liz a call. What is it about her work that appeals to you and works in so well with the brand? Liz’s work is full of colour and texture. Gorman is known for colour and it’s a prominent part of my collections, but the texture was something quite new. Digital printing has been around for years now, however photographic digital reproduction is not something I’ve tended to go for very often. This time, imagining Liz’s work digitally printed in high resolution with

utmost detail onto silk was something that just had to be tried. The results were quite amazing. Which is your favourite piece in the collection? My favourite is the dress. I love the scale of Liz’s work on this dress, its volume maximises the drama and detail. What are your tips to working some of these pieces into the everyday winter wardrobe? If you go wild on one half you can take it easy on the other half. The beauty of such intensely printed styles is that you need only basics to wear with them, like a black tank or skirt. Keep the simple bits very simple. I like the dress with a street shoe, such as a white trainer. It brings the larger-than-life element back down to earth. THE VINE

A firm foundation Thanks to the support of the Burnside Village Foundation, talented students from around the state recently experienced what life might be like as an art student. Earlier this year, eight nervous teenagers from various regional locations in South Australia arrived for the inaugural 2017 Summer Art Camp at Adelaide Central School of Art. Supported by a grant from the Burnside Village Foundation, so there was no cost to students, the School put together a diverse program designed to challenge, connect and inspire the selected participants. The teenage participants shared a love of visual art and the strong sense that it would be part of their adult lives. They came from as far afield as

Waikerie and Mount Gambier, having been selected on the basis of merit, passion and need. For four days the teenagers were introduced to the visual art industry and tasted life as a Bachelor of Visual Art student. They drew. They painted. They analysed work. They also ate a lot of ice cream. They left having formed firm friendships and filled with anticipation of the years to come. To find out more about the Burnside Village Foundation visit burnsidevillage.com.au/services/ burnside-village-foundation

“Summer Art Camp was really amazing. I didn’t expect to come into a community that is so engaged in the visual arts and that is so supportive as well. I’ve never really experienced that, being a regional student. Being around people who understand you is awesome.” CAITLIN MCELROY SUMMER ART CAMP PARTICIPANT AND CLARE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT

Progressive technology, sophisticated design and sporty dynamics. The all-new Audi Q2 Launch Edition has arrived in Australia, announcing itself as the most exciting newcomer in the compact SUV segment. Featuring elements from the Q2 Edition #1, such as exclusive quantum grey paint, black and Manhattan grey exterior details and 19-inch alloy wheels, the all-new Audi Q2 is initially being offered in two model lines: the 1.4 TFSI design and the 2.0 TDI quattro sport. Both models share the sporty seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard. The entry level 1.4 TFSI model features fuel-saving Cylinder-on-Demand technology that shuts down two of the four cylinders under light throttle loads. The Audi Q2 is equipped with a generous array of standard features, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, MMI Navigation, Bluetooth and smartphone interface, voice control and parking system with rear view camera. Automatic air-conditioning with dualzone climate control, leather-appointed seats, auto-dimming interior mirror, a

contrasting C-pillar blade and either 17or 18-inch alloy wheels, depending on the model, round out the key highlights. The all-new Q2 has been awarded a fivestar Euro NCAP rating, with an ANCAP rating pending. Along with the game-changing Audi “virtual cockpit” and convenient headup display, the driver assistance systems for the Audi Q2 come directly from the upper luxury classes. The Audi pre-sense plus (AEB) system recognises critical situations with other vehicles, as well as pedestrians crossing in front of the vehicle, while driving at speeds of up to 65 kmh. If necessary, Audi pre-sense plus can initiate hard braking – to a standstill – at low speeds. Other systems in the line-up include adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function, the lane-departure warning system Audi side assist, the lane-keeping assistant Audi active lane assist, and cross-traffic assist rear which supports the driver while reversing out of tight situations. audisolitaire.com.au

O

ne of Burnside Village’s newest stores has one of the world’s hottest stars supporting them. Tommy Hilfiger global ambassador Gigi Hadid will collaborate a second collection this autumn. The supermodel co-designed the first TommyXGigi collection in 2016, and this year’s collection celebrates Gigi’s unique take on modern style, fused with the signature “classic American cool” for which Tommy Hilfiger is renowned. The collection features women’s sportswear, footwear and accessories, including watches and sunglasses. Inspired by the Summer of Love, the collaboration is a nod to the laid back Californian beach lifestyle, with badges and patches inspired by the sunshine state. Strong on the rugby stripes, denim and

relaxed silhouettes celebrate a calm and carefree lifestyle. The signature Tommy colours stand tough and uphold the brand’s heritage. The latest campaign was shot on the beautiful beaches of Santa Monica; Gigi the perfect choice for the job. “Gigi’s iconic style, authenticity and optimistic attitude make her the ultimate Tommy girl, and she is always surprising and inspiring our fans with a unique approach to fashion and lifestyle,” says Tommy Hilfiger. To keep the chills away, check out the ever-popular bomber jacket, re-imagined by Tommy in denim. The new collection joins the classic Tommy Hilfiger range, including men’s tailored clothing and sportswear, women’s apparel and sportswear, underwear, sleepwear, loungewear, footwear and accessories.

A

ndrogyny was the look du jour for our fashion shoot, and Eliza went for a wetlook polished creation with a quiff to create volume. A little EIMI styling mousse gives shape and control to the style, along with the Ocean Spritz. A touch of Evo Builder’s Paradise working spray on damp hair finishes the look perfectly. A wide tooth comb is the perfect tool to create that just-stepped-out-of-the-water look. “It’s not over-styled, it’s a little undone with an edge,” Eliza says. You can take the drama down a notch for a classic night look, by following the same steps with dry hair. Coming into winter, Eliza says styling is all about keeping hair out of the face and away from the high collars and scarves we tend to don. A sleek up-do keeps hair away from the chest and neck. Beach waves are banished this season; Eliza recommends a texture spray and hairspray, which can be formed perfectly with heat and a wide-tooth comb. It’s also time to go over to the dark side – no more warm blondes. It’s all about ultra-contouring, which works by playing up your best features. To keep hair in its best shape, use moisture-rich products to keep away the dryness caused by heating and heat-styling.

IS FOR ZARA

F

rom catwalk to sidewalk, the Zara woman will be sporting a range of different fabrics, cuts and colours from the brand’s collections this season. Rock ’n’ roll inspires the grunge collection, with embellished tartan and band tees. These are perfectly paired with more feminine pieces, to create an edgy, yet fragile look. Rebellion meets femininity with studs and leather, combined with fluid, floaty fabrics. Think ruffles and lace with plenty of grit. The functional and sophisticated range is all about oversized silhouettes, minimal details and sharp structure. Floral prints aren’t going anywhere any time soon. Adding to the colour and geometry over the cooler months is houndstooth and gingham, to keep the solid blacks at bay. Whether men are on the look-out for formal or casual, Zara Man has it covered. Wool and cotton suits are inspired by American Ivy THE VINE

League and are dominated by stripes, checks and greys to add interest to the suave silhouettes. Men don’t have to choose between classic and sporty with neoprene, wool and cotton suits that are easy to move in, but office-appropriate. The young, urban edge comes in the form of super-skinny trousers with a strong note of rock. Checks, studs and leather reign supreme. Ease into the relaxed vibe of oversized garments in different shades of blue and surprising twist of stripes and traditional Japanese prints. Oriental inspiration flows into Zara Kids, with girls wearing satin fabrics, printed and embroidered with Japanese birds and flowers. Boys are street-inspired in black, grey and white, with extra-long bombers, baggy chinos and skinny jeans.

The Camilla boutique quickly became a must-see destination at Burnside Village when it opened in 2015. We caught up with the woman behind the brand to chat about inspiration, prints and, of course, the new store in the Atrium Mall.

WORLD OF

WONDERS F

ans of iconic brand Camilla finally got what they wished for, when the first South Australian boutique store opened at Burnside Village. They got even more than they bargained for late last year with a special appearance by the brand’s creator, Camilla Franks. “It was an honour to meet and connect with our Burnside tribe.” Camilla says. “Like us, they walk to the beat of their own drum, embrace colour and feel empowered by adventure. We celebrate all women, no matter what age, shape or size and I am humbled to have Adelaide women stand tall with the Camilla brand.” Camilla aims to make customers feel like they’ve landed in parts of the world that inspire

her most, and Burnside is no exception. “I want to transport our customers on a journey of my travels when they enter a Camilla boutique. We take cues from the places we have visited, such as the Topkapi Palace in Turkey or the Jardin Majorelle in Morocco, and reinterpret them into our store design. I want them to be able to stop here for a minute and for it to be a place of reflection and peace.” Travel is such an inspiration for Camilla in every aspect of the brand; it’s the motivation for each and every collection. For Camilla, the prints are her personal travelogue. “I get off the beaten track and the inspiration comes from my immersion in the culture – their tribe, their food, their traditions and their colour palette.”

Camilla’s most recent journey was to the foothills and ancient fortresses of China and Tibet and the latest collection, Chinese Whispers, is the result. Camilla spent time with batik artists who honour the traditional processes of their ancient crafts. “The pieces within these prints are hand embroidered like the traditional garments of the region, and the detail, right down to each button, fortifies my newfound love for this special part of the world”. The label has skyrocketed from a small resort brand in Bondi Beach launched more than 14 years ago, to its current gallery of global wanderings. “I honour the artisans of different tribes I visit by whole heartedly engaging in their traditions and cultures.”

years

in bed S

troll into Peter Alexander at Burnside Village and you’ll immediately get a feel for the brand – quirky, fun and oh so playful. What’s most impressive is the brand’s creator and namesake has been turning out collection after collection for three decades, sometimes with 24 product drops in a year. That equates to a lot of ideas and reinvention of Peter’s favourite styles. “My brain never turns off,” Peter says. “I always have the antenna open to ideas. They can come from anywhere.” Peter was born in South Africa, so animals and safari have featured heavily throughout the years, and there have even been creatures of a whole different kind. Peter Alexander was the first commercial brand to shoot with the characters of Sesame Street, who featured in one collection. Peter is proud of being inclusive to all. His brand is for everyone – for infants to the elderly, from size six to 22. This extends to his store visits, something Peter is known for.

“I’m not just saying it, but Burnside Village is one of my favourite centres. There’s something really chill about it.” Store visits give Peter a chance to chat with fans and hear what they’re loving or wanting. “You can’t just sit in your glass tower. It’s a nice way of being one on one with customers.” The first 30 years of Peter Alexander culminated in a collection that’s close to Peter’s heart. When creating a new line, the designer has to put his creative and commercial brain to work. He has to love each piece and have fun with it, but ultimately, it has to sell to the wider market. But for the anniversary collection, Peter has thrown commercialism out the window to create a capsule of pieces based on what he loves. There’s animal print, floral and some of the most glamorous sequinned sleepwear pieces you’ll ever see. Peter says the gold sequinned track pants might not be for everyone, but they sure are a lot of fun. “I really love the slippers. There’s lots of fuzz and fur – always fake fur with me. It’s like a shoe you can wear out.”

“My brain never turns off. I always have the antenna open to ideas. They can come from anywhere.” Peter’s mascot, muse and reason he does so much work with the RSPCA, Penny the dog, doesn’t miss out either. There’s a special 30 year candle adorned with a golden dog on top. The milestone has given Peter pause to reflect on the past few decades and the growth of his business from his humble beginning. “In my office, there’s a 10-year anniversary collection poster and at the time, I was amazed I’d made it that far, and it’s grown so much since then.” Along the way, his mum has been a constant support, and the celebrations are as much for her as anyone else. “It’s a nice time for my mum to gush – not that she doesn’t every day already!” You will find Peter Alexander in the Atrium Mall. ARTISTIC connection A recent exhibition at Burnside Village for the Adelaide Fringe Festival marked judgement day for a group of local artists.

E

mma Hack’s artistic career has gone from strength to strength. She’s become a prominent figure in the local, national and international art scenes with her intricate, creative body painting. Her success has ignited a desire to give back to the industry that has supported her for so many years. “My artistic career had started to climb and I wanted to give back to the South Australian community in some way, as well as connect with other artists,” Emma says. Emma wanted to give back in a very practical way and celebrate the artists our state produces, and so the Emma Hack Art Prize (EHAP) was born. Entrants are bound only by their imagination; mixed mediums, sculpture, video work, photographic pieces and paintings are all welcome. “It’s a really exciting exhibition to visit and immerse yourself in.” This year, the EHAP was held at Burnside Village from February 20 to March 13, and the theme, Real or Surreal, encouraged participants to explore their idea of reality. In the fourth year of the prize, there were nearly 200 entries – the most to date, and Emma says the competition was very strong. Helping Emma to judge the Prize was Penny Griggs, general manager of the SALA Festival, and Gavin Blake, founder and director of the Centre for Creative Photography. Penny says the exhibition made people think, question and swoon. “It was a pleasure being a judge for this year’s Emma Hack Art Prize,” Penny says. “Held every year during Adelaide Fringe, the award highlights and acknowledges the diversity and talent of visual artists living in South Australia.” A portion of sales of the works were donated to Mental Health Illness Fellowship South Australia. emmahackartprize.com

Lise Temple The temporal experience of viewing place is explored in Lise’s oil on canvas. The compositional elements of architecture and space were manipulated with the objective to intertwine memories with the experience of the present.

Sonja Durmanovic Blurring the Lines explores the surreal nature of the content of our carefully curated social media profiles, where the lines between our actual selves and the surreal self we wish to project become so blurred as to be indistinguishable. Jasmine Dixon Using realistic subjects in conjunction with abstract, unconventional backgrounds, Jasmine aims to create disjointed and interesting effects and, in this case, reflect her brother’s joyful personality and love of technology.

SHE’S GOT

STYLE Burnside Village personal stylist Julie Zanes uncovers some of the latest trends to heat up the coldest months. What are your favourite trends/looks this Autumn/Winter? On the Milan and European runways I was thrilled to see velvet featuring so prominently with dresses, skirts, tops, pants, shoes – even boots! I particularly love velvet in navy blue and burgundy. Shoppers will be delighted to find this featuring at Burnside Village retailers. I also love the high shine metallics, and not just in shoes. In gold, silver, rose gold, copper, greens and blues – sass & bide love to do this look.

Which boots and coats will you be wearing? An emerging trend that you will find at our stores, such as Carla Zampatti, is an essential wardrobe staple – the military coat/jacket. Already proving popular among savvy fashionistas. Wear it with skinny jeans and ankle boots for a fabulous look.

What’s back in fashion? Bomber jackets are back. You will find them in leather, satin, lace and velvet. Traditional, short, long and plenty with embellishment. For guys, head into Calibre. I’ve spotted them at Cue and Witchery for the ladies.

What about tips for men this season? Whether it’s a suit, shirt or just a tie, lots of copper for men this autumn/winter. Very much suited to men with warm undertones. The duffle coat has made a comeback. Classic black, grey, navy, or if you have warm undertones, try it in camel. The fedora felt hat for the confident man is also a great look for autumn/winter. Rodd & Gunn is a definite must for some of these pieces.

What is your favourite accessory this season? I love the choker and so do many editors of style magazines. A variety of choice in different fabrics and materials including leather, beads, sequins, tassels, fringe, and my much-loved velvet. A choker can really dress up an outfit.

Take advantage of Julie’s expertise and book your Burnside Village Stylist Session at burnsidevillage.com.au

HEAD for the HILLS Autumn’s just around the corner, which means sandy thongs will be replaced by more appropriate footwear, cricket will make way for Aussie Rules and the leaves on Adelaide’s trees will begin their gorgeous transformation. For some, mid-autumn is the annual catalyst for a trip to Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, while others may have heard good things about the place, but are yet to make the pilgrimage.

H

ere are five reasons to stop by the iconic Mount Lofty Botanic Garden this autumn:

The autumn colours are breathtaking Every year around April, the leaves on the Garden’s cool-climate trees – think maples, oaks, elms, liquidambars, dawn redwoods and ashes – begin to change, transforming it into a panorama of scarlets, bronzes and yellows. Photographs don’t do it justice, but if you do want some proof of the Garden’s beauty simply search Instagram and prepare to be amazed (and probably inspired to pack the car to head the Hills right now). It’s super close to town While a trip to the Hills can seem like a fullday trip on first thought, the Garden is just a hop, skip and a jump from the toll gate. A quick scan on Google Maps will tell you the Garden’s just a 20-minute drive (15 kilometres) from Burnside Village up the freeway. Take the exit at Crafers and use the Upper Entrance (Summit Road, Crafers) or Lower Entrance (Lampert Road, Piccadilly).

70

THE VINE

It’s accessible to everyone Mums with prams, the elderly and people with disabilities, fear not! The Lakeside Trail opened in 2015 is designed to allow anyone to enjoy the Garden’s tranquil beauty. Dotted along the one-kilometre loop around Main Lake are eight artworks – each with a different fundamental message about people, plants and the environment. Keep an eye out for the Garden’s elegant resident black swan. Fitness fans can tackle more strenuous routes by starting at the Lower Carpark and heading to the top. There are surprises at every corner Autumn’s the Garden’s busiest season, but with 97 hectares to play with, it’s still a breeze to find a secluded picnic spot. Along with autumn colour, the Garden’s signature sights are its cool and winding gullies, which contain some of Australia’s finest plant collections. Fern Gully is a temperate rainforest that’s cool and inviting year-round. Magnolia and Rhododendron Gullies are two of the Garden’s most photographed sights (their dazzling flowers are best viewed in spring). Fans of

native plants shouldn’t miss Spring Gully and the Nature Trail, where a canopy of mature Stringybark eucalypts shelters a complex understory filled with native wildflowers. It’s celebrating its 40th birthday this year Mount Lofty Botanic Garden opened its gates on November 5, 1977, and in the decades since it has become one of the Hills’ most popular natural destinations. The Garden will celebrate its anniversary on November 5 this year with a free public event, featuring live music, food and kid’s activities. Subscribe to the Botanic Gardens of South Australia’s e-newsletter to get all the details delivered to your inbox later in the year. And in the meantime, make sure you head up for a visit to experience the Garden’s magic – you won’t regret it. botanicgardens.sa.gov.au/subscribe

Manager of Flight Centre Burnside Village, Christopher Eig recommends some of London’s highlights, from his professional and personal travel experiences. How many times have you visited London? Three What are your tips for surviving a long-haul flight? Drinking plenty of water, and try to avoid consuming too much alcohol as it dehydrates you. Ensure you walk around the aircraft throughout the flight to stretch your legs. Which city district do you prefer to stay in? Mayfair. It is so close to the amazing Hyde Park, and is within walking distance of many attractions. There is also a tube station nearby, providing easier transit around London. Do you have a favourite hotel? Intercontinental London Park Lane – the location is amazing and the rooms are just beautiful. What is your favourite historic site? Modern marvel? I love the Tate Modern – you can walk around all day and look at all the art. My favourite historic sites are the palaces, including the Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace. They are simply beautiful. What is something every first-time visitor should see? Eat? Drink? I recommend the hop-on hopoff bus; this journey showcases the attractions in London that

newcomers love to see. It also saves time, as you can get on and off at various points along the way. To eat, you must try British fish and chips. Finally, sit inside a traditional pub and soak up the locals enjoying themselves. What is something in London you never tire of? Walking along the banks of the Thames and looking at the Houses of Parliament, Palace of Westminster and London Bridge. What is something about London that has surprised you? The food, and just how many amazing places there are to fit any traveller’s needs. Particularly the curries; they are top quality.

Loosely cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and toss; cook, uncovered, for a further 30 minutes or until the chicken is tender and the potatoes cooked through. Lettuce and pea fritters with Romesco sauce MAKES 16-18 500g finely shredded cos lettuce 150g peas 2 tsp salt 4 eggs, well beaten 4 spring onions, finely chopped 150g fresh white breadcrumbs 100g grated smoked cheese 2 tbsp each finely chopped parsley, dill and mint (plus extra for garnish) Fresh green chilli, to taste Pepper and smoked paprika, to taste Panko crumbs for coating Olive oil for frying Toss lettuce with salt and place in a colander with a weight on top for an hour or so. Test fry a tiny amount to check for flavour (don’t add any salt until this point; there will be saltiness from the lettuce) before shaping the mixture into 16-18 small patties. Roll them in panko crumbs to coat thinly. Heat a shallow layer of oil in a frypan and cook fritters until golden on both sides. Preheat oven to 200C. Cut tomatoes in half and trim a bit off the bottom so they sit flat. Over a bowl, squeeze each half gently to force out the seeds and juice. Into this bowl, add bread crumbs, garlic, parsley and enough olive oil to make a firm paste; season to taste. Place onto a baking tray and drizzle with a little more oil. Bake for 15 minutes or until topping is nicely browned, but tomatoes hold their shape. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Heat oil in a heavy saucepan and cook onions over low heat until soft and just starting to colour (don’t skimp on this process otherwise the onions will not have a natural sweetness). Add tomatoes and reduce until liquid has evaporated. Add sugar, vinegar, cinnamon and star anise. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture is thick and syrupy. Add chilli, salt and pepper if necessary – aim for a pleasant sweet and sour taste (adjust sugar or vinegar as needed). Seal in sterilised jars to keep (makes about 500ml), or cover tightly and keep in fridge for about a fortnight. pastry 1 packet Careme puff pastry, thawed 1 egg, lightly beaten

ROSA’S TIP:

“Buy round tomatoes that are firm but fully ripened on the vine for extra flavour.”

Cut 16 x 5cm rounds from the pastry; lightly brush with egg. Take eight of the rounds and cut out a centre piece of 2.5cm round. Set the larger disc on the 5cm round. Bake at 200C for 12-15 minutes or until puffed and golden. (You can cook the extra centres at the same time and use as garnish or save for another time.) Fill with hot onion jam and serve.

ganache 125ml cream 15g butter 200g dark chocolate

Prepare orange sugar so it has time to dry – mix sugar with zest and set out at room temperature to dry. To make doughnuts, in a medium bowl activate yeast by dissolving it in warm water and milk, with sugar. Leave in a warm place for about 15 minutes or

until mixture starts to foam. Add butter, flour, zest, cocoa and eggs. Bring together and knead on a lightly-floured surface until smooth (you can do this in a mixer with the kneading hook attached). Oil the ball of dough lightly and put in a clean bowl, covered, for about 1 hour or until doubled in size. Meanwhile, make the ganache by heating cream and butter on the stovetop or in a microwave. Remove from heat and melt in the chocolate. Place mixture in fridge until set enough to hold its shape. Knock back risen dough and knead briefly. Break off about 1 tablespoon of dough and wrap it around 1 teaspoon of cold ganache, making sure there are no gaps. Repeat with remaining dough and ganache and set aside to rise again for another 30 minutes. Pour oil into a deep saucepan and heat to 190C using a thermometer. Cook doughnuts in batches of 4 or 5 until golden all over. Drain and roll in orange sugar. Serve immediately but take care with the hot centres. Grey bowl from Best Wishes THE VINE

The Cibo cannoli has been a menu staple over the years, reinforcing the Italian heritage of Cibo – and they’re the perfect winter treat. They’re handmade fresh daily in the Cibo kitchen in Adelaide. The delicate shell is made from a light pastry dough, gently fried, the inside of the cannoli coated in chocolate and hand filled with sweet ricotta dipped in crushed pistachio nuts. It is filled with chocolate custard cream one end and vanilla custard cream the other. Finally, it’s finished with a dust of snow sugar.

Cocolat may just be your go-to this winter for soul-warming meals and beverages. Find comfort in their home made winter soups, with four different flavours on offer. There’s a nutty pumpkin soup, creamy potato bacon and leek soup, Spanish minestrone soup or European chicken and corn soup. Or start your day with a full breakfast; eggs benedict, smashed avocado with tomato, or feta cheese with a soft poached egg. You can’t go wrong with classic eggs and smoky grilled bacon, with mushrooms and tomato. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a decadent hot chocolate or mocha coffee, made using real chocolate ganache. DOLCE & CO

PASTA DELI

PEPE CUCINA

ROLLD

If you can tear yourself away from the beautiful sweets at Dolce & Co, you’ll find a new line of savouries. They’re smaller in size, but provide a hearty, filling and delicious meal. There are 12 different pies and pasties, made with locally-sourced sustainable meat and vegetables – a lovely lunch on a cold day. Don’t forget to save room for the premium cake and sweet pastry range.

Pasta is always the ideal partner for other nutritious ingredients essential to a healthy diet. Drop by Pasta Deli to pick up the perfect accompaniment to your vegetables, fish, and poultry. Pasta provides the perfect fuel to power your muscles and brain, to keep you going throughout the day. See the team in store for fresh pasta, sauces or ready-made pasta packs.

The seasons well and truly set the menu at Pepe Cucina, and chef Salvatore Pepe anticipates there will be lots of funghi featured this year. Salvatore says the earthy flavours find their way into dishes from pasta and risotto, to frittata and crostini. Slow cooking is also popular this time of year, with rich sauces the perfect way to ward off chills. Stop by the restaurant to see what’s in season.

You can’t beat the taste of locally sourced produce. The team at Rolld recommend a bowl of pho. The warm broth is cooked over six hours and served with white rice noodles and garnished with bean shoots, basil or fresh chilli – for those who prefer a little heat. Try the banh mì: a baguette-style roll sourced from Bakers Delight, filled with chicken, beef, pork or tofu and salad.

SHANGHAI TEA HOUSE

THE VILLAGE BAKER

UMI SUSHI

UTZI ESPRESSO

VP’S

The new kid on the menu at Shanghai Tea House is the grilled scallop in a bread bowl. The scallops are grilled and blended with onion, celery, carrot and creamy garlic sauce. The ingredients are served in a toasted bread bowl, sprinkled with parmesan cheese and oven-roasted. All dishes at the restaurant are prepared in-house using the freshest local ingredients.

Delectable sweet and savoury pastries and breads are available fresh each day at The Village Baker. Try the South Australiansourced lamb shank pie, or the pork and fennel sausage roll. On a cold winter’s day, there’s no remedy like indulgence so choose a tart, cake or slice. The Village Baker also has you covered with the wide range of delightful cocktail selections.

Umi Sushi offers classic and flavoursome Japanese dishes. Their prawn tempura udon is a light noodle dish, comprising a savoury hot broth, topped with crispy tempura prawns. The gyoza pack comes with eight pork or vegetable dumplings and two slices of beef sushi roll and salad. Or try the teriyaki chicken don, teriyaki beef don, teriyaki salmon don and una don.

There will always be a coffee and sweet treat with your name on it at Utzi Espresso. In addition to the old favourites, there are some new meals on the menu over the cooler months. Their Italianstyle cannelloni or lasagne is served with a fresh garden salad. The chicken schnitzel roll will soon become a favourite and their home-made baklava is hard to pass up.

What better way to warm up this winter than with a cooked breakfast at VP’s, made using the freshest ingredients. Available all day, you can stop in and refuel either before or after shopping. For a lighter option, try the homemade soups. The vegetable or chicken and vegetable soups are both served with toasted ciabatta bread. Or perhaps the glutenfree frittata or quiche will hit the spot.

Explore the Village Market and beyond for a leisurely lunch, or takeaway meal.
