“I’d like to tell you it gets easier, but it doesn’t. If there’s a comfort, you get used to the pain if you let yourself, I went to a grief seminar in Casper. Don’t know why, just, It hurt so much, I was searching for anything that could make it go away That’s what I wanted this seminar to do, make it go away. The instructor come up to me after the seminar was over, sat beside me and said, “I got good news and bad news. Bad news is you’ll never be the same. You’ll never be whole. Ever. What was taken from you can’t be replaced. You’re daughter’s gone. Now the good news, as soon as you accept that, as soon as you let yourself suffer, allow yourself to grieve, You’ll be able to visit her in your mind, and remember all the joy she gave you. All the love she knew. Right now, you don’t even have that, do you?” He said, “that’s what not accepting this will rob from you”. If you shy from the pain of it, then you rob yourself of every memory of her, my friend. Every one. From her first step to her last smile. You’ll kill ‘em all. Take the pain, Take the pain, Martin. It’s the only way to keep her with you.” -Cory Lambert, Wind river

Leopold II (9
April 1835 – 17 December 1909) reigned as the second King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909 and became known for the founding and brutal exploitation of the Congo Free State as a private venture. Leopold became the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State, a private project undertaken on his own behalf. He used explorer Henry Morton Stanley to help him lay claim to the Congo, the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the Berlin Conference of 1884–1885 the colonial nations of Europe authorized his claim by committing the Congo Free State to improving the lives of the native inhabitants. From the beginning, however, Leopold essentially ignored these conditions. He ran the Congo using the mercenary Force Publique for his personal enrichment. He used great sums of the money from this exploitation for public and private construction projects in Belgium during this period. He donated the private buildings to the state before his death, to preserve them for Belgium. Leopold extracted a fortune from the Congo—initially by the collection of ivory—and after a rise in the price of rubber in the 1890s by forced labour from the natives to harvest and process rubber. Under his regime millions of the Congolese people died: modern estimates range from , with a consensus growing around . Human-rights abuses under his régime contributed significantly to these deaths. Reports of led to a major international scandal in the early twentieth century and the Belgian government ultimately forced Leopold to relinquish control of the colony to Belgian civil administration in 1908.

Lord, the Roman hyacinths are blooming in bowls and The winter sun creeps by the snow hills; The stubborn season has made stand. My life is light, waiting for the death wind, Like a feather on the back of my hand. Dust in sunlight and memory in corners Wait for the wind that chills towards the dead land. Grant us thy peace. I have walked many years in this city, Kept faith and fast, provided for the poor, Have taken and given honour and ease. There went never any rejected from my door. Who shall remember my house, where shall live my children’s children When the time of sorrow is come ? They will take to the goat’s path, and the fox’s home, Fleeing from the foreign faces and the foreign swords. Before the time of cords and scourges and lamentation Grant us thy peace. Before the stations of the mountain of desolation, Before the certain hour of maternal sorrow, Now at this birth season of decease, Let the Infant, the still unspeaking and unspoken Word, Grant Israel’s consolation To one who has eighty years and no tomorrow. According to thy word, They shall praise Thee and suffer in every generation With glory and derision, Light upon light, mounting the saints’ stair. Not for me the martyrdom, the ecstasy of thought and prayer, Not for me the ultimate vision. Grant me thy peace. (And a sword shall pierce thy heart, Thine also). I am tired with my own life and the lives of those after me, I am dying in my own death and the deaths of those after me. Let thy servant depart, Having seen thy salvation.
It is hard for me to face and admit that I have become a middle-aged man. The certain solitude that I hold dearly in my personal life and the way I like to make my art work , increasingly, contrast the world outside; it seems to me transparently-- a two extremes. I often doubt myself as a person with Peter-Pan syndrome will who ever to take a “walkabout” and to be mature? -- (As I procrastinate with my pitiful obsession of manipulating color pixels in Photoshop as the excuse to avoid improving my financial well being for over 18 months...) Perhaps not. My computer screen is a window of a safe house that connects me through internet into the world at large. I look out from this window to see the world with distance. So far… for what I have seen.... There are no pretty pictures nor any ideal scenery that I wish to witness. Therefore, I compelled to indulge myself further to make a journal of what I have observed. This journal is not the true account of the reality but merely a series of sketches with alterations, which filtered through my angrish and discontented mind. It is a disappointed man who try to tell an honest lie. I speak of self-justified truth... naked. Seemingly without disguise but covered with shames. In fact, The reality of the world is much harsher. And I can’t bare to speak about it as what it is. But, I still feel a sense of the entitlement of being an artist, and want to commit a petty crime, lawfully in my own rights. The true dishonesty lies in my romantic notion of human forms, and their beauties. the photoesque of the compositions are mirages. I tend to blur the outlines of reality with feathering brushes of fantasies. Those fantasies whitewash and cover up an insatiable abyss of my own being. Making this book, it is my attempt to seal the void from the world outside and my soul within. Assuming the adversaries can come to an Armistice Agreement or a temporary Cease and Desist Order. It is my unbinding draft of a document with them. it titled: ParadiseLost. Burt Sun, 2017
