Annual Report 2006 Outlook 2007 01
Message from the Dean 2007 was another year of ground-breaking developments for the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. The Faculty was actively engaged in the development of the Melbourne Model reforms and we were a key participant in the formal launch of the Melbourne Model on the 17th of April. The year also saw the final groundwork being laid for the launch of the New Generation Bachelor of Commerce in 2008. This work had two major goals to develop the degree’s curriculum and structure and to communicate the Melbourne Model changes to students, parents, schools and the business community.
Our teaching performance is, once again, outstanding. We have received significant national recognition for the innovative teaching of our individual academics, as well as for our collective performance with a top ranking in the Commonwealth teaching and learning performance fund.
Our key message for these stakeholders is that the New Generation Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) offers an enhanced professional preparation for our graduates. The new curriculum provides the same depth of professional specialisation as the old, while breadth studies and implementation of new experiential learning opportunities will further enhance the employability of our graduates. Importantly, the BCom continues to enjoy professional accreditation in accounting, actuarial studies and finance.
A number of initiatives have also been launched to enhance the study and campus experience for our students.
We are pleased to say our message was heard ‘loud and clear’, as we experienced a significant boost in demand for the BCom among school leavers. This resulted in an increase in the ENTER score to 95.6. The successful outcome of the launch of the New Generation BCom and the subsequent high ENTER score reinforces its position as the premier undergraduate business and economics program in Victoria and, arguably, in Australia. 2007 was also a ‘red letter’ year with respect to our graduate programs. On the 26th of October, the Melbourne Graduate School of Management was formally launched, along with the full suite of the University’s graduate schools, by the Chancellor of the University, Mr Ian Renard.
In 2008 we will continue to implement initiatives to become the leading Economics and Commerce Faculty and Graduate School of Management in the region and one of the best in the world. Professor Margaret Abernethy, Dean
02 Faculty of Economics and Commerce
The Melbourne Graduate School of Management will be responsible for the delivery of all of the Faculty’s graduate programs, including coursework and research degrees. The establishment of the new Graduate School gives us the opportunity to fully review the entire range of graduate programs, ensuring they remain at the ‘cutting edge’ of industry, research and pedagogical developments. We are confident that both of these new endeavours will deliver a highly rewarding experience for our students.
In the last weeks of 2007, two integrated student centres were established at separate locations for undergraduate and graduate students. By concentrating a wide range of administration and support services into a single, well-designed facility, each of these student centres will improve access for students seeking to manage their enrolments and student life. One of the key elements of the student centre model is the Student Experience team, to be integrated in each centre. These teams will deliver programs including orientations, mentoring and social events to enrich the campus experience for all of our students. The Faculty’s industry links were greatly strengthened during the course of 2007. A key development was the inauguration on the 21st of November of the Faculty Advisory Board. Chaired by Mr Peter Yates, Chairman of Peony Capital, the Board was described by the Financial Review as a ‘dream team’ of Australian business. The Board members are Ms Sally Capp, CEO of the Committee for Melbourne; Seek co-founder, Mr Paul Bassat; former President of the Australian Business Council, Mr Hugh Morgan AC; Mr Chris Leptos AM Managing Partner at Ernst & Young; Dr Ian Macfarlane AC, former Governor of the Reserve Bank; Mr Terrence Campbell AO Chairman of Goldman Sachs JBWere; Ms Patricia Cross, a Director of Wesfarmers Limited, National Australia Bank Limited, Qantas and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute; Mr Peter Gunn, Managing Director of the PGA Group Pty Ltd; Mr Kevin Wong, former Managing Director of JP Morgan; Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce, Professor Margaret Abernethy; and Deputy Dean of the Faculty, Professor Bruce Grundy.
Annual Report 2007 Outlook 2008 03
The University of Melbourne Knowledge Transfer activities took several strong steps forward in 2007 with the launch of Insights, a new Faculty journal. Insights publishes the best of our public contributions, edited for a general readership. It makes for topical and thought-provoking reading, available online at http://insights.unimelb.edu.au. The Faculty continued to strengthen its research program in 2007. During the year, eight new Australian Research Council Discovery Grants were awarded to Faculty researchers. Our overall application success rate was three times the national average. Our researchers continue to work in areas that reflect the concerns of our society, creating project partnerships with the National Water Commission and the Brotherhood of St Lawrence. We are seeing returns on our efforts to provide high quality support for research higher degree students. The latest Quality of Research Supervision survey noted our major improvements in the ‘researcher cohort experience’ of our PhDs. Our PhDs continue to produce outstanding research, earning significant national and international accolades. 2007 also saw ongoing expansion and refinement of the scholarship program for international and domestic students, ensuring the brightest applicants are not prevented from studying with us for financial reasons. In 2008 we will continue to implement initiatives to become the leading Economics and Commerce Faculty and Graduate School of Management in the region and one of the best in the world by: Y
maintaining and enhancing our strong emphasis on conducting and publishing world-class research
Y
further developing our program offerings, especially in the Melbourne GSM at graduate level, to provide a full suite of graduate career entry and career development programs across the business and economics disciplines
Y
enhancing our state-of-the-art infrastructure with the completion of our new faculty building in Berkeley Street
Y
further improving the student experience in the Faculty and Melbourne Graduate School of Management, with the implementation of dedicated student experience teams in both the undergraduate and Graduate School Student Centre
Y
boosting links with industry, government and the community, in particular through the activities of the Faculty’s Advisory Board
Y
raising the profile and the prestige of the Melbourne Graduate School of Management.
I would like to acknowledge and thank the many friends of the Faculty who have supported and assisted us this past year with their endeavours both within and beyond the University community. I hope that you will find this report on the activities of the Faculty in 2007 and the profile of the academic and professional staff of interest. Please do not hesitate to contact the Faculty if you would like more information. Professor Margaret A. Abernethy Dean
Established in 1853, the University of Melbourne is a public-spirited institution that makes distinctive contributions to society in research, teaching and knowledge transfer. The University is consistently ranked as Australia’s premier tertiary institution and is placed 27th in the world in 2007 in the Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings. Melbourne is a globally significant research institution. It is Australia’s largest university in terms of both research expenditure and income, and is the country’s second largest research and development organisation. This position is enhanced by its proximity to so many of the nation’s independent medical research institutes in Parkville. University of Melbourne staff include Nobel laureates, eminent scholars, award-winning researchers and many internationally renowned academics. In all disciplines, Melbourne is active in international networks of scholarship and collaboration, offering excellent academic and research prospects to its students. The University of Melbourne is a vibrant institution with a reputation for excellence built over 155 years. Our success has been achieved by insisting on international excellence and alignment with global best practice in teaching and research. Throughout 2007, the University devoted much effort to develop ‘the Melbourne Model’ for implementation in 2008. The Melbourne Model comprises a major curriculum reorganisation that aligns the University of Melbourne with European and US higher education pathways. Focusing on a ‘3+2’ model of three-year undergraduate and two-year professional and research masters degrees, the Melbourne Model promises students an educational experience attuned to the challenges of the 21st century. The Melbourne Model also commits the University to place an equal emphasis on research, teaching and community engagement, or ‘Knowledge Transfer’. These three strands of activity form a ‘triple helix’, a DNA that will shape all of the university’s activities as it seeks to become one of the world’s leading universities. The University community is made up of 40,000 students, including more than 9,000 international students from a least 100 different countries. There are more than 6,500 staff working in the University. The University offers 29 undergraduate degrees but, from 2008, the majority of enrolments will be in the six ‘New Generation’ degrees developed under the Melbourne Model. These degrees, in Arts,
04 Faculty of Economics and Commerce
Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Music and Science, provide a broad and deep, disciplinebased education and act as pathways to graduate professional degrees in agricultural science, applied commerce, architecture, engineering, law, medicine, nursing and teaching. In addition to the new graduate professional degrees, the University continues to offer traditional graduate and postgraduate certificates, diplomas and masters degrees including masters by coursework and by research. With over 3000 students in research higher degrees, the University confers more Doctors of Philosophy and higher doctorates than any other Australian institution. There are 12 faculties and schools in the University: Architecture, Building and Planning; Arts; Economics and Commerce; Education; Engineering; Law; Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences; Music; Science; Veterinary Science; Land and Food Resources and the Victorian College of the Arts. As professional education moves to graduate level under the Melbourne Model, many of these faculties have launched graduate schools or are making the transition to become graduate schools. New graduate schools include the Melbourne School of Design, the Melbourne School of Engineering and the Melbourne Graduate School of Management. The University of Melbourne is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight, comprised of the leading comprehensive, research-intensive universities in Australia. In addition, the University is a member of Universitas 21, an international network of leading research-intensive universities. Universitas 21 facilitates collaboration and cooperation between the member universities and creates entrepreneurial opportunities larger than could be achieved individually, or through traditional bilateral alliances. The main University campus covers 20 hectares and is located at Parkville, adjacent to the Melbourne central business district and near Carlton’s vibrant Lygon Street precinct. A number of residential colleges and student apartments are located close to the campus.
Annual Report 2006 Outlook 2007 05
Faculty of Economics and Commerce History The Faculty has a proud record of innovation in teaching, and excellence in research. Economics has been taught at the University of Melbourne since its foundation, commencing with the appointment of W.E. Hearn as professor of history and political economy in 1855. The Faculty itself was established in 1924 and teaching commenced in the Bachelor of Commerce the following year. The founding Dean of the Faculty, Professor Sir Douglas Copland, was a leading figure in Australian economics and politics until his death in 1971. The Faculty’s 500 seat Copland Lecture Theatre perpetuates his memory. The Faculty of Economics and Commerce has always been a pioneer in Australian business education. In the 1930s, it led the way by teaching marketing and, in 1954, it appointed Australia’s first full-time professor of accounting, A.A. Fitzgerald. The Faculty first offered the MBA degree in 1963 (now taught in the Melbourne Business School) and has remained a leader in graduate education. Masters degrees in business and IT, applied finance, international business, applied commerce and accounting were all introduced as timely responses to shifts in the economic and business landscape.
During its long history, the make up of the Faculty’s student population has changed considerably. In 1925, the first students in the BCom were predominantly part-timers, also working in commerce in the city of Melbourne. Today, the degree takes a large cohort of full-time students, recruited from high-performing school-leavers both in Australia and overseas. The Faculty has an extensive alumni body, numbering some 33,000 students who have graduated since its foundation 80 years ago. Many of these graduates now occupy senior positions in business, government and academia, in Australia and around the world.
Current Profile The Faculty is a leading centre of business and economics education, research and innovation. Our academic staff make key contributions to professional and public debate through publications in the international scholarly literature, conferences, lectures and executive education. They are also regularly invited to provide expert advice to the highest levels of industry and government, both nationally and internationally and have won numerous awards in teaching and research excellence.
The aims of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce at the University of Melbourne are to: Y
conduct and disseminate research of international standing in the disciplines of accounting, actuarial studies, economics, finance, business information systems, management and marketing
Y
provide the highest quality of teaching and training to students drawn from the brightest students in Australia and overseas
Y
develop close and mutually beneficial relationships with business, government, the not-for-profit sector and the professions, both nationally and internationally.
Teaching and research is undertaken by four Departments: Accounting and Business Information Systems, Economics, Finance, and Management and Marketing. The Centre for Actuarial Studies is located in the Department of Economics. The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research is also part of the Faculty. Our departments collaborate closely in both teaching and research.
The Faculty also includes a specialist Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU), which was the first of its kind in Australia. The Unit is instrumental in supporting student learning, the development of innovative teaching practices and improving the teaching and learning culture throughout the Faculty. Some 8,640 students are enrolled in the various degrees and diplomas offered by the Faculty. Approximately 6,380 students, representing 25% of undergraduates in the University, are enrolled in the BCom, either as a single degree, or, more commonly, in combination with another degree such as Arts, Law, Engineering, or Science. Over 1,800 students are enrolled in postgraduate diplomas and degrees, including 145 in research higher degrees. In 2007, the Faculty taught in excess of 5,450 full-time equivalent students. Of this load, 40 percent are Australian students paying under an income contingent loan scheme (HECS) with some government subsidy, 50 percent are international students and 10 percent are full fee-paying Australian students. There are 190 full time equivalent academic staff employed in the Faculty, supported by 134 professional staff.
Melbourne is an amazing city, and the University of Melbourne embodies the best aspects of its culture. Jane Chynoweth, current BCom student, Australia

Annual Report 2006 Outlook 2007 07
Academic Programs 2007 Faculty Highlights In addition to the successful launches of the Melbourne Model, the New Generation Bachelor of Commerce and the Graduate School of Management, covered in the Dean’s message, the Faculty enjoyed many additional highlights in 2007. In 2007 the bi-annual journal Insights was launched as a major Knowledge Transfer initiative. In two issues, pitched at the general reader, Insights covered topics including the booming Chinese economy, Amazon deforestation and climate change, global poverty and trade protectionism. The Faculty is also publishing a regular Knowledge Transfer flyer, detailing the latest projects and initiatives in which we collaborate or engage with the community and industry. The inauguration of the Faculty Advisory Board represents a major step towards a richer dialogue with the business community, one that we believe will be mutually beneficial. In August, the Department of Economics opened its new laboratory for Experimental Economics. The laboratory simulates complex economic scenarios incorporating behavioural elements from participants. Experimental economics is a burgeoning field, and a new undergraduate subject offers our students the opportunity to explore it. One of the partners funding the laboratory, the Victorian Department of

At the date of writing, the Faculty’s new Berkeley Street building is up to its 10th storey and construction is proceeding rapidly. It is anticipated all floors will be completed by mid-2008 and the fit-out will then continue until building hand over in February 2009.
Bachelor of Commerce (Honours)
The Faculty’s success in winning competitive research funding exceeds that of previous years. Grants were awarded to 'traditional' research projects as well as to industry partnerships indicating the academic and public relevance of our endeavours. In 2007, Faculty staff earned very high profile recognition for their teaching. Inspiring and innovative teaching by individual academics was recognised with a prestigious Carrick Award and two Carrick Citations (see the Awards and Distinctions section for full details). The very high overall standard of our teaching is recognised in the University’s top ranking in the Business, Law and Economics discipline group of the 2008 Learning and Teaching Performance Fund. This Commonwealth fund aims to reward excellent teaching standards in Australian Universities and, in 2008, will distribute $83.3million across the university sector.
In 2007, the following undergraduate courses were offered by the Faculty of Economics and Commerce: Bachelor of Commerce Bachelor of Commerce (Management) The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and Bachelor of Commerce (Management) are three year, full-time programs. The honours degree requires a further one year of full-time study. The bachelor degree aims to develop powers of critical analysis that can be applied in many fields, and provides professional training for a wide variety of professions. The honours program allows students to undertake specialised study and research in an area of interest, developing analytical and research skills to a higher level. From 2008, the New Generation Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) retains the depth and professional emphasis of the original degree, while offering the opportunity to gain additional breadth of learning. The core program comprises five compulsory subjects. Students then choose a major from one or more of accounting, actuarial studies, business, economics, finance, management and marketing. Breadth is developed by taking subjects outside the core program of commerce, and makes up between a quarter and a third of the degree. Breadth studies enable students to tap other bodies of knowledge, methods of enquiry, personal and professional skills, and ways of learning. In 2008, the clearly-in ENTER for a Commonwealth supported place in the New Generation Bachelor of Commerce was 95.60, representing the top 4.4 percent of students in the state, with comparable levels for interstate and international students. The standard of entry increased from 2007, signifying a positive market response to the Melbourne Model and the New Generation BCom. The total number of students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce in semester 2 2007, either as a single degree or as a combined degree, was 6,830. For the New Generation BCom in semester 1 2008, 644 Commonwealth Supported Places have been offered.
Faculty engagement with the school community included the Accounting Extension Program, Master Class program, school visits, and representation at expos in metropolitan and regional Victoria and interstate, as well as on-campus activities promoting the Melbourne Experience. In 2007, over 500 high-achieving Year 10 students, representing over 100 schools, participated in the Master Class program. Four of our academics offered classes, covering topics such as ‘Australians are living longer – will their retirement savings last?’ and ‘The art of persuasion: does advertising really work?’ Over 8,000 prospective students and parents visited the Faculty during Open Day in August. A series of information events on the New Generation BCom was also well attended later in the year. The Faculty continued to support student programs such as the Student Ambassador Leadership Program and the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) in 2007. The team SIFE represented five faculties across the University and competed in New York for the SIFE World Cup, after winning the national competition. Twenty-two undergraduate students and four graduate students in the Faculty took part in the Student Ambassador Leadership Program. As part of this program, students chose either a community project, university service, or to volunteer at least 40 hours in the community with organisations including Engineers Without Borders, People Outdoors, Vic Aids Council, Scared Heart Primary School, Cystic Fibrosis Victoria and the New Hope Foundation. Bachelor of Commerce students were recognised for their academic achievements at the annual Dean’s Awards Ceremony. The guest speaker was Ms Sally Capp, CEO Committee for Melbourne, and Mark Chicu (BCom(Hons) 2006) was the inaugural student speaker. Increased Faculty engagement with industry and the community resulted in generous support for students through sponsored scholarships and prizes, with six new awards set up in 2007. The Faculty’s seven undergraduate student societies were again very active, offering opportunities for students to develop personal and professional networks and engage in leadership roles.

We were successful in attracting ARC funding, with eight new Australian Research Council Discovery grants awarded to Faculty researchers. The overall success rate of 66 per cent was very pleasing given a national success rate of 21.4 percent. The Faculty was also awarded two new ARC Linkage grants in 2007 demonstrating our commitment to work with industry partners on projects of social relevance. Dr Rosanna Scutella from the Melbourne Institute is working with the Brotherhood of St Laurence on a project investigating job retention for disadvantaged job seekers. Associate Professor Michael Davern and Professor Colin Ferguson are working with the South West Alliance of Rural Health to model the adoption and use of virtual services technologies for rural and regional healthcare. The Faculty’s researchers continue to work across disciplines and institutions to carry out topical research on issues affecting our changing society. Dr Brad Potter and Professor Nasser Spear from the Department of Accounting and Business Information Systems, for example, were awarded a one-year research grant of $182,607 from the National Water Commission to undertake a project titled ‘Developing a conceptual framework for water accounting’, being undertaken with A/Professor Keryn Chalmers and Professor Jayne Godfrey from Monash University. Dr Angela Paladino from the Department of Management and Marketing conducted research into buyer behaviour and the decision to move to
environmentally sound electricity, which attracted significant media interest throughout the year. The Faculty’s Honours students apply for a Kinsman studentship which provides them with the opportunity to work with their supervisor to turn their Honours thesis into a journal article. Kinsman scholars publish in a wide range of journals and present at academic conferences around the world. The Faculty successfully recruits research higher degree students of the highest calibre and provides top-quality academic supervision. In 2007 the Faculty achieved a very high ranking with regard to overall satisfaction in the latest Quality of Research Supervision survey. The survey noted the Faculty’s major advances with regard to cohort experiences, citing improved computer access, support for conferences and fieldwork, a successful social events program, scholarship support programs and career advice upon graduation contributing to the students experience whilst undertaking their PhD. Our PhD graduates continue to be recognised internationally for the quality of their research. Dr Carlin Dowling from the Department of Accounting and Business Information Systems was awarded the 2007 Outstanding Dissertation Award by the American Accounting Association (Information Systems Section) for her thesis which investigated the antecedents of appropriate audit support system use.
The experience and knowledge of the lecturers was most helpful in getting a firm grasp on applying theories to practice. Alexandre Tsymbalov, Master of Applied Commerce 2007, Associate Business Banker, NAB
Annual Report 2007 Outlook 2008 13
Internationalisation In 2007 the faculty maintained a strong level of international applications and enrolments in spite of a general downturn in international recruiting throughout Australia. We strengthened our links with a number of international universities and we continue to attract high profile academic visitors from around the world. Diversity remains a key priority in our international recruiting and work to develop our markets in India, in particular, is an ongoing focus. Our scholarship program continues to provide study opportunities for applicants from our region and further afield. The program is also targeted to provide opportunities to applicants from developing economies. Some of our internationalisation highlights in 2007 include: Y
Y
expansion of the dual degree agreement with Universitas Gadjah Mada to cover both undergraduate and graduate programs negotiation of a dual degree agreement with Universitas Indonesia
Y
exploration of potential dual degree links in Europe and South Asia
Y
increased student diversity with successful recruitment from markets such as Mauritius, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines
Y
streamlined entry requirements to avoid overcrowding from major markets like China, while still ensuring access for the highest standard applicants.
Delivering international professional experiences for our graduate students is a high priority, with significant programs launched in 2007. The Thai Mobility Program takes a group of students, local and international, to spend 10 days in Thailand, consulting for two organisations. The consulting projects are genuine business challenges and the project offers our students exposure to real business scenarios that demand analysis and solutions drawn from the full breadth of knowledge acquired through their studies. Another initiative, truly representative of the global information economy, is the ‘Virtual Internship’ in which our students conduct online analysis of Chinese businesses listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The internship host is a New York based company specialising in web based financial analysis. Students are given project assignments and check in with the company online. The Melbourne GSM’s Graduate Careers Centre facilitates the project, ensuring students gain a maximum of professional learning from the experience.
Study Abroad and Exchange Opportunities An important part of the Faculty and the Melbourne Model agenda is ensuring that our students have a genuinely international experience, by being exposed to international students in Melbourne and having the opportunity to study at partner institutions overseas. The Faculty welcomed over 110 students from study abroad and exchange partners in 2007. Scholarships were made available for students from Melbourne to study at partner institutions overseas and many Melbourne students went on exchange to countries including the UK, USA, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. The Faculty of Economics and Commerce currently has exchange programs with the following institutions. Students from these institutions can apply to study with the Faculty and our current students can also apply to study at these institutions. Students of institutions not listed are invited to apply for the Study Abroad program within the Faculty.

Being part of the Economics and Commerce Career Mentoring Program was a significant step towards success for 55 selected graduate students who were matched with industry mentors according to their degree specialisation and interest. In 2007 Mentors came from a very wide range of professional fields from the private and public sectors alike, many of them University of Melbourne alumni, interested to be part of successful mentor-mentee relationships enabling students to gain insights into specific industries and begin to develop personal and professional networks. Mentors came to the ten-month program from large, medium and small organisations including Deloitte, Telstra, KPMG, AAMI, JP Morgan Chase Bank Berhad, Halstead Financial Services, Commonwealth Bank, Department of Human Services Victoria, Synergy Plus, CSIRO, MediGroup Australia, Hobsons, Cubit Media Research, and Toll Holdings Ltd. The Department of Management and Marketing have had much positive feedback about their third year Management Practicum subject, where students are teamed into groups and assigned to a Practicum Organisation. In 2007, students undertook placements at a range of business and government organisations. This subject gives students to opportunity to explore a host-specified business project of strategic importance and produce and present a report proposing recommendations. The participating organisations identify the scope, opportunities and constraints of the project, and students learn to work with unstructured and incomplete information, and develop essential planning, research, and teamwork skills. There are a limited number of places in this subject, and students are selected on the basis of academic merit.

The Department now has 25 full-time academic staff, 7.8 EFT professional staff and a large number of sessional teaching staff. In 2007, the Department of Finance had approximately 9,680 subject enrolments, of which 7,800 were undergraduate, and 1,880 were postgraduate students. The Department has a particularly strong honours program with intake restricted to around 40 of the very best undergraduate students. A suite of postgraduate programs is offered, ranging from the practitioner-oriented Master of Applied Finance and Master of Financial Management to the more academically-oriented Master of Commerce in Finance and the PhD in Finance.
The Department of Management and Marketing provides integrated education in the disciplines of management and marketing. The main competence areas in management are human resource management and industrial relations, international management, managing business and organisation and operations management. The main competence areas in marketing are marketing management and communication and customer strategy.
Current research interests of department staff span the field of finance and include asset pricing, derivatives, corporate finance, market microstructure, financial institutions, real estate finance and international finance. The Department is particularly strong in derivatives research, with the Melbourne Derivatives Research Group as a focal point. To support its research activities, the Department has access to all major financial databases, including WRDS, Datastream, Bloomberg and IRESS. The Department of Finance is committed to knowledge transfer. The Department is one of the founding members of the Melbourne Centre for Financial Studies, established in 2005 to foster a partnership between public and private sectors, and industry and academia. Department staff members offer tailored executive education programs, actively participate in professional associations, and are frequently invited to consult for the finance and corporate industry and for the public sector. In exchange, finance practitioners actively participate in our teaching programs, by providing applied topics lectures in our undergraduate finance program and by lecturing specialist subjects in our professional graduate programs.

Established in 1962 under the leadership of Professor Ronald Henderson, it was the first research institute of its kind in Australia. It has had six Directors: Ronald Henderson, Peter Dixon, Richard Blandy, Peter Dawkins, John Freebairn and Stephen Sedgwick. Throughout its history, the Melbourne Institute has made significant contributions to economic and social research on Australia and contributed strongly to economic and social policy analysis, debate and development.
During 2007, major clients of the Melbourne Institute included the Australian Government Departments of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) and Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance, Westpac Banking Corporation, TD Securities and the Reserve Bank of Australia, as well as the University of Melbourne. Currently, the Melbourne Institute has a major research contract for the provision of social policy research with DEWR.
In 2007, it had a staff of about 47 as well as a number of honorary appointments.
The Melbourne Institute has also been successful in winning substantial ARC funding, both Discovery and Linkage grants. It is home to a NHMRC grant to conduct a longitudinal survey of Doctors, known as Medicine in Australia: Balancing Employment and Life (MABEL). The first wave of the survey is planned for May 2008.
The Melbourne Institute operates in four research areas:
The Melbourne Institute also provides postgraduate education at the PhD level.

As well as contributing strongly to the academic literature in applied economic research, both in Australia and internationally, the Melbourne Institute has a long-standing tradition of working closely with business, government and community groups by providing research and consultancy services.
The Melbourne Institute is the home of one of Australia’s leading academic journals in Economics, the Australian Economic Review. This has a strong policy focus and a readership that extends beyond the academic community. The Australian Economic Review is included in the prestigious Social Sciences Citation Index (only the second non-specialist economics journal from Australia to be included). The Melbourne Institute publishes regular economic indicator reports such as the Westpac – Melbourne Institute Indexes of Economic Activity; the Westpac – Melbourne Institute Survey of Consumer Sentiment; the Melbourne Institute Survey of Consumer Inflationary Expectations; the Melbourne Institute Wages Report; the TD Securities – Melbourne Institute Monthly Inflation Gauge; and the Manpower – Melbourne Institute Employment Report.
