An

of tranquillity

The newly opened Moloko Strathavon Hotel offers luxury and tranquillity in the heart of Johannesburg’s financial centre. Ben Sansom reports

T

he vision was to create a haven of peace in the very heart of the bustling financial centre of Johannesburg, one of South Africa’s largest and most modern cities. Lying more than 5,700 feet above sea level on the Highveld and over 300 miles from the Indian Ocean, the city is the hub of South Africa’s commercial, financial, industrial and mining businesses and the centre of its diamond trade. Its high rise skyline boasts the headquarters of companies such as BHP Billiton and Nedbank, while its airport is the gateway to southern Africa. As the exuberance and razzamatazz of the football World Cup begins to die down, and the shrieking vuvuzelas fall quiet, the powerful heartbeat of the city’s sophisticated new business and financial centre, Sandton, will once again reassert itself. The new Moloko Strathavon Hotel is located in Sandton, and the concept behind its development was to provide an unprecedented level of comfort and service which goes way beyond the offerings of conventional five star hotels. By creating a serene and secluded environment at the very heart of the country’s thriving business and financial centre, the hotel offers the opportunity to enjoy a stress-free business trip steeped in luxury and relaxation or a stunning holiday experience leaving the visitor revitalised. The Strathavon bears little resemblance to the glittering tower blocks that usually represent new hotels in metropolitan areas. It has been thoughtfully designed to provide tranquillity along with luxury and privacy. Constructed as a series of smaller and more intimate four storey elements, each section is linked to its neighbour by a single storey walkway, which winds through a garden that has been landscaped with indigenous trees and plants, water features and ponds.

landscape designs in the hotel resorts, estates, corporate, retail and commercial sectors, we look forward to an imaginative and rewarding collaboration with Moloko Hotels and Resorts. We are proud to share our expertise in developing stylish designs matching and enhancing the exclusive, opulent, yet tranquil character of the Moloko Strathaven Hotel.

Accommodation is impressive. There are 24 warmly decorated standard bedrooms, and a range of suites—20 standard, six executive and three presidential—each of which is equipped with high speed internet access, telephone, fax machine, coffee machine and mini bar. The standard and executive suites include a lounge area and a separate kitchenette while the executive and presidential suites enjoy added extra privacy by being located separately and equipped with their own private entrance. Every room in the complex has been constructed according to green building principles and has its own terrace overlooking a stream or pond. Not only does this provide visitors with tranquil views, peace and privacy, but it also floods the interior of the buildings with natural light. At the heart of any business hotel, however, are its business centre, restaurant and lounge bar. And at the Strathavon, these match the standard set by the accommodation. Separated by a landscaped courtyard, the restaurant offers anything you care to order, at whatever time of day you want it. A gourmet à la carte menu has been inspired by international cuisine while breakfast is provided through an extensive buffet. Lunch and dinner are served at standard times while snacks and light means are available throughout the day. For pampering, the award-winning Camelot spa offers an exceptional range of treatments, and the same high standards of design have gone into this exquisite leisure complex. The spa’s steam rooms and saunas all overlook restful water features while relaxation can be achieved on the timber decks surrounded by a Zen garden. For those either wishing to cool off or enjoy the sun, the swimming pool and terrace are located on the same level as the spa and provide a wonderful view of one of the hotel’s most spectacular features: a waterfall which flows from the restaurant terrace immediately above into the pool. Meanwhile, for those wishing to indulge in more vigorous exercise

or maintain their fitness standards, the complex houses a well equipped gym. The Strathavon enjoys an enviable position, located in a secluded residential area that affords an air of peace and tranquillity, and the hotel’s concierge is always available to coordinate airport transfers, transport, excursions and any assistance the guests might need. There is easy freeway access; Johannesburg and Pretoria city centres are each just 30 minutes away; and the Gautrain station—South Africa’s first rail subway servicing the Johannesburg and Pretoria areas— is just minutes away by foot. All of this, however, is just a short distance from the centre of Sandton, the business and finance hub of the nation. The Sandton Convention Centre—one of the largest convention centres on the continent— is very close by. And among the many noteworthy events to be hosted there was the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio Plus Ten) in 2002. For those who enjoy shopping in their own right or like to return home with a gift for that special person, just minutes from the hotel are two of South Africa’s most exclusive shopping malls. The iconic Sandton City houses outlets for anything from fine African art to camera supplies. Then there is Nelson Mandela Square—named after South Africa’s eldest statesman—which is a shopping centre set around an Italian style piazza. The Moloko Strathavon Hotel is owned and operated by Moloko Hotels, and is the latest addition to a portfolio of properties which includes Moloko Athol Place, a boutique hotel also located in Sandton. The company is part of the Moloko Investment Group which is chaired by advocate and entrepreneur Richard Moloko and comprising seven divisions. Akani Hospitality is a hospitality management company, managing and marketing a wide selection of three star and four star hotels throughout South Africa. Cafe Sofia is a chain of seven restaurants in Cape Town and Johannesburg offering Mediterranean mezze and tapas. Gentlemen’s fashion outlet 312 Couture reflects the values of Savile Row and is aimed at a clientele preferring the tailored look, along with bespoke quality. The Moloko Foundation supports Moretel United Football Club; BWIN.com is one of the world’s largest online betting companies; while Moloko Property completes the group portfolio. www.molokoinvestmentgroup.co.za
