Manchester build their profile at MIPIM Marketing Manchester recently coordinated the city’s annual presence at MIPIM, the world’s largest property showcase which takes place every March in the South of France. This year, a record breaking 76 organisations joined the Manchester at MIPIM partnership, including Bruntwood, NOMA, Siemens, Addleshaw Goddard, Allied London and Airport City to name but a few. The main event attracted over 21,000 participants from 93 countries and the opportunity was taken to profile Manchester on the global stage; presenting the latest story of the city’s progress - the Manchester narrative as it were, through a series of events and activities. The city hosted a total of 20 events, at which 58 speakers presented to more than 2,000 International delegates. The core theme for Manchester at MIPIM 2015 was Smart Cities, and this was expressed by theming each day of activity at the event around the vital components of any successful city: ‘Head, Hands and Heart’. Highlights this year included new announcements from Salford’s £650m New Bailey Project and

NOMA. The city’s science agenda was discussed and Professor Nancy Rothwell updated the audience on the University of Manchester Campus masterplan and the £1billion investment over the next ten years. Mike Ingall from Allied London also inspired the audience at MIPIM with a vision for the city’s St. Johns Quarter and the concept of a new ‘vertical village’. Whilst Lynda Shillaw of Airport City announced a new 75,000 sq ft office scheme which will play a major part in the development of this unique £800m project. We also heard an overview of Manchester Place from Deborah Mclaughlin, who outlined plans to finance and deliver 6,000 homes in Ancoats and New Islington in the next 10 years. The presentations were rounded off by an update from Gary Neville, who represented his property firm Zerum and discussed more about his planned developments in central Manchester, including the Stock Exchange and Jacksons Row. Peel Land & Property has announced plans for an innovative, mixed-use development to be known as Trafford Waters. The development, situated on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Trafford, close to the Trafford Leisure Village and intu Trafford Centre, will be a sustainable urban neighbourhood, with both a vibrant residential and a diverse business community. The scheme will combine up to 3,000 high-density housing apartments, including many suitable for families, with approximately 875,000 sq ft of high-specification commercial space, including offices, small-scale retail, leisure and community uses. Green corridors and waterways throughout the site will ensure that it is well-integrated, with large amounts of high-quality green space that will help sustain vitality and vibrancy and attract residents, businesses and visitors. Commenting on the plans, James Whittaker, Development Director at Peel Land & Property, said,
“We have been working on the vision and masterplan for Trafford Waters for over 15 years. It will be an exemplar, sustainable development that will create a space for a new community to live, work and play. “I am delighted that we are able to present plans which, if approved, will help address housing need in the area and provide new business and employment opportunities, all while regenerating and enhancing a prominent but underused site in a fantastic waterfront location. I am confident that Trafford Waters will be an asset to the entire region.” Trafford Waters will be linked to the intu Trafford Centre by a Green Bridge, providing residents, employees and visitors with easy access to the bus station and Metrolink stop. The development will be well-situated for transport access by a range of transport options, including cyclists and pedestrians. A number of road improvements already underway in the local area will ensure easy connections to the motorway network and wider region. Greater Manchester gears up to put manufacturing back in the spotlight The beginning of March saw the publication of Greater Manchester’s Manufacturing Strategy, a six-step plan that is backed by prominent business figures and intends to put manufacturing firmly at the forefront of the city’s agenda. The board of the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership (GM LEP) which includes; David Birch, director of McKinsey and Company; Juergen Maier, managing director of the industry sector (UK & Ireland) for Siemens; Wayne Jones, Senior Vice President, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE; and is chaired by BT Regional Director Mike Blackburn, has commissioned the new strategy to ensure that manufacturing continues to be one of the most productive sectors in the region. With the industry set to grow in value from £6.7bn (GVA measured in 2012) to at least £10bn by 2027, Greater Manchester’s Manufacturing Strategy has emerged following an in-depth industry consultation period. It outlines how the sector can play a critical role in helping the region to prosper and rebalance the UK’s economy. The strategy’s recommendations include establishing a private-sector led Manufacturing Leadership Network, which would serve as a powerful voice for Greater Manchester’s manufacturing base. It is intended that the network would draw attention to current issues and also complement the work of existing national and regional (North West) bodies. Another recommendation of the strategy is to establish better collaboration in manufacturing between Greater Manchester skills training facilities, incorporating key private-sector participants and giving skills providers access to the latest manufacturing technologies. This is already underway through the work of Engineering Futures, a Greater Manchester initiative which launched in Summer 2014 and is supported by the Skills Company, Trafford College and Tameside College. Mike Blackburn, chair of GM LEP,

said: “The manufacturing sector presents a wealth of opportunity for Greater Manchester, and in light of recent announcements from Government about devolving powers to our combined authority, this is undoubtedly an exciting time to be part of the industry. “However, there are significant challenges across the sector and we’re keen that our manufacturing base has the appropriate tools to tackle these and develop its trade over the long-term. “We’re confident that, through the support of industry, we’ve identified the immediate core needs, and we intend the strategy to evolve as its six recommendations are brought to life. We want to continue this dialogue as we move forward to implement initiatives such as the Leaders Network in the coming months.” Wayne Jones, senior vice president of MAN Diesel & Turbo SE and board member of GM LEP, adds: “As we’ve seen in recent headlines, the UK’s manufacturing industry needs better support in addressing its existing skills gap, especially in the field of engineering. Given this current focus, there could be no better time to launch Greater Manchester’s Manufacturing Strategy, which is seeking to breathe new life into the industry by further raising its profile and bringing more skilled young people into the workforce.”
New hotel at LCCC
Plans to create a brand new 150 bedroomed hotel at Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) in Trafford have moved a step closer. This follows agreement from Greater Manchester’s Combined Authority (GMCA) to provide a £5m loan to the Club. The loan, funded through the Greater Manchester Growth and Growing Places Funds, will help the Club move closer towards the funding required for the development. The hotel would replace the current outdated 68-bed hotel at the Club - adding to the multi-million pound regeneration focused investment already gone into the site. This has
been key to bringing Test Match cricket back to the region. Mike Blackburn Chair of the GM LEP said: “LCCC has a long-standing relationship with Greater Manchester and is one of the most prestigious sporting arenas of its kind in the country. “This agreement by the Combined Authority will enable the Club to strengthen its position and its longterm growth strategy by allowing it to compete as an all-round first class sporting, conference and events venue, bringing business to the area and attracting wider investment, employment and training opportunities.”
Trailblazer apprenticeships launched by Barclays Barclays have launched the UK’s first degree-equivalent ‘Trailblazer’ apprenticeship, which is also the first ever apprenticeship in Relationship Management, designed to develop the skills required for looking after the needs of business and private clients. During National Apprenticeship Week at the beginning of March, Barclays announced it had recruited ten young people to join its degree-level ‘Trailblazer’ apprenticeships programme – the first of its kind to go live in the UK. Developed as part of the
Government’s ‘Trailblazers’ initiative, Barclays led a group of financial services companies in creating the standard for the first ever ‘Trailblazer’ Relationship Management apprenticeship. The ten recruits will work with teams across Barclays, including its Corporate Bank, Wealth & Investment Management division and in another first the Investment Bank. The successful candidates joining as Barclays ‘Trailblazers’ apprentices come from a range of backgrounds and bring varying academic achievements.

news Manchester builds stronger links with China The end of March saw Barbara Woodward CMG OBE, British Ambassador to China, Shao Weimin, Vice Mayor of Wuhan, Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, and Nick Whittingham, British Consul-General in Wuhan, cut a ribbon to launch construction of the new British Consulate General in Wuhan. The new British Consulate will officially open to the public later this summer. In addition to the British Embassy in Beijing, the UK also has Consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chongqing. The opening of the new Consulate will further enhance the UK’s links with Central China. Nick Whittingham also announced the launch of operations of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and British Council in Wuhan. The two teams began working in Wuhan in March, and will further explore and enhance the relations between the UK and Wuhan in areas of trade and investment, arts, culture and education. Also taking place at the end of March saw the Consulate, as well as other UK government departments and partners, including UKTI, UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI), British Council,
VisitBritain, the China Britain Business Council, and Manchester City Council (Wuhan’s sister city in the UK), organise ‘UK Week’ in Wuhan. This comprises a series of events in the areas of business, tourism, education and culture in one of the most dynamic cities in China. This aims to raise the profile of the UK’s unique characteristics in one of China’s fastest-growing and most dynamic cities. The series of events demonstrate the UK’s strengths as a creative, knowledge-based economy and a country that warmly welcomes Chinese visitors and investment. Smart Cities Planning and Governance is a special focus of the week. The final workshop for the project of UK-China Smart Cities: Planning and Governance was organised and the project of UK-China Smart Cities: Design and Delivery was launched. These projects, funded by FCO China Prosperity SPF Fund will support the development of smart cities in both China and the UK, and will enhance the city links between Manchester and Wuhan. Barbara Woodward CMG OBE, British Ambassador to China said, “I am delighted that one of my first
acts as Ambassador is to take part in a UK Week here in Wuhan and to oversee the opening of a new British Consulate-General. “The Consulate-General in Wuhan is the UK’s first new post in China for 14 years. The UK’s choice of this city for its new Consulate General reflects the British Government’s strong belief that Hubei and Wuhan will be future powerhouses in China as the balance of its economic power shift to the centre and to the west. By working together we can do so much more for the prosperity of the UK and Wuhan.” Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council said, “Manchester and Wuhan have been sister cities for many years and the relationship has gone from strength to strength. I’m delighted to lead such a significant Manchester delegation to Wuhan to further deepen our relations and the opening of this new consulate is a significant moment. “Manchester and Wuhan have much in common and I’m sure our ever-growing links will benefit the citizens in both cities, opening up new opportunities for economic and cultural connections.“
New pro bono initiative signals another year of giving at the One Advice Group The One Advice Group have announced an exciting new initiative with Thrive Trafford’s Pro Bono Bank, a volunteer scheme for local Manchester-based businesses. The Thrive Trafford Pro Bono Bank is a pool of responsible professionals and business leaders with varied skills, knowledge and experience. The bank was set up by Thrive last year in response to the demand from the local voluntary sector for professional advice and skills. The bank creates a network of responsible business professionals who work and live in Trafford, who can share their expertise with the voluntary sector, as well as each other. Dominic Timmons and Kerry Blackhurst, directors of the One Advice Group subsidiary Castle Keep Law, have offered their considerable expertise to the Bank, where they will provide local SMEs
with free, in depth legal advice. The partnership with Thrive is one of a number of charitable initiatives that the One Advice Group is already involved with in 2015. Staff from across the Group, including Harrington Brooks (its debt management subsidiary), have already raised more than £5,700 pounds for charity since September 2014. Moreover, staff members have also volunteered an incredible £680 a month in their time supporting local organisations. Separately, the One Advice Group were also shortlisted for the Corporate Supporter of the Year as part of local charity Forever Manchester’s 25th birthday celebrations. They have been supporting the charity for the last year via a range of initiatives such as office bake days and the annual ‘Movember’ fundraiser.
Commenting on the One Advice Group’s charitable work, Dominic Timmons said: “Charity is at the very heart of the One Advice Group’s ethos. We are a community focused company that employs local people in and around the Manchester area. The Pro Bono Bank is an excellent example of the work that we do to support the community that we are extremely proud to be a part of.” Mark Cottam, CSR Advisor for the Thrive Trafford Pro Bono Bank added: “We are delighted to welcome the One Advice Group into our ever growing list of corporate partners. Such guidance, from respected experts such as Dominic and Kerry, is absolutely essential for the development of small businesses that may otherwise struggle in the minefield of legality and regulation that often besets start-ups.”
Nick Whittingham, Consul-General in Wuhan said, “I am delighted to officially announce the start of the construction work of the British Consulate-General, and look forward to the full team arriving in the summer to strengthen the links between the UK and Wuhan. “The Consulate-General as well as all the other British government departments and partners will be on the ground to support business and people in Wuhan. And we plan to hit the ground running.” The UK has a long-standing relationship and wide-ranging engagement with Wuhan. In 1986 Manchester and Wuhan became sister cities, and since then, the two cities gradually enhanced their cooperation and communications. Both the UK and China, plus Manchester and Wuhan also signed a series of deals and memorandums of understanding.

North West SMEs need to consider alternative finance to grow Innovative SMEs in the region must be open to alternative sources of finance if they are to grow their businesses and help drive the economic recovery, according to finance experts. Recent statistics show that SMEs are finding it significantly more difficult than their peers to raise the funds needed to grow. Of the SMEs that applied for funding in the last 12 months, 25 per cent of applications were rejected by banks and 34 per cent were rejected by financial institutions*. Advisors from the professional services industry gathered last week in Manchester at the Bridging Finance Limited and Bibby Financial Services seminar to discuss the alternative methods available to support North West SMEs. Laura Morgan, corporate development manager from short-term lender, Bridging Finance Limited, said: “The economy is improving and SME’s are keen to grow. However, traditional bank lending restrictions are still tough and as a result, SMEs are increasingly turning to alternative forms of finance to fulfil growth ambitions. “The most progressive and forward thinking businesses may struggle to get their ideas and plans off the ground, because of a lack of availability of funding. “Many SME business owners don’t
realise alternative forms of finance, such as short term funding are available to assist the needs of their business. We work closely with SMEs in the North West Region and funding can be secured on land, commercial property or residential investment property. “Short term funding from Bridging Finance is available quickly and it allows businesses to fulfil time-sensitive opportunities and purposes such as management buyouts, cash flow raising, acquiring stock, tax liabilities, property development and property acquisition. “Short term funding is normally available on loans from £20,000 to £5 million.” For more information on Bridging Finance, call 0161 333 1955 or visit: www.bridgingfinance.co.uk
Chris Baguley to join judging panel for 2015 E3 Business Awards In other news Bridging Finance managing director, Chris Baguley, has been asked to join the judging panel for this year’s E3 Business Awards. The E3 Awards recognise diversity and achievement within the North West business community and are open to high-achieving businesses, entrepreneurs and social enterprises throughout the region. The name E3 refers to the awards’ focus on Enterprise, Education and
Employment - three key drivers of social and economic change. The awards evening will take place at the Macron Stadium in Bolton on Thursday 11 June. There will be sixteen award categories in total and, as in previous years, the standard of entries is expected to be extremely high. Chris Baguley said: “I’m looking forward to judging the fantastic pool of talent from North West businesses, social enterprises and entrepreneurs. We support SMEs and medium sized businesses in the region every day and I’m often blown-away with the diverse, switched-on and driven people and businesses that are helping the regional economy thrive.” Speaking on behalf of 1 Events Media, Managing Director Mubarak Chati said “I’m very grateful to Chris for agreeing to act as judge for the Awards. The judging process is never easy but his skills and experience will be an important addition to what is proving to be a very impressive and distinguished panel.”

The practice was founded in 2012 by Hale-based accountant Murray Patt and currently employs eight people, but aims to double staff numbers by the end of 2016. The firm believes Trafford is the perfect environment for business growth and says providing strategic advice to local owner managed and family-run businesses is paying dividends. Murray Patt commented: “We’re delighted to reach this milestone and we’ve got growth plans in place to double our staff numbers to make sure we meet our target of £2m turnover. “We’re ambitious about our growth targets but we feel that Trafford and South Manchester are the best breeding ground for entrepreneurs in the world.”

Cabinet Office announces progress on SME procurement reforms Elizabeth Vega, CEO of Altrincham based global IT consultancy Informed Solutions, welcomed the Cabinet Office announcement that 26.1% of central government spend on goods and services in 2013/14 went to SMEs. New legislation in force from 25 February means that: • Everyone in the supply chain must comply with 30 day payment terms, including suppliers and sub-contractors. • Public bodies must publish an annual late payment report, making their accountability more transparent. • The bidding process is simpler across the wider public sector – complex forms, such as Pre-Qualification Questionnaires, are now abolished for low value contracts. • The procurement process for public sector contracts will be quicker • There is a requirement to advertise public sector opportunities on the new national Contracts Finder portal
on www.gov.uk/contractsfinder These broad reaching reforms include encouraging SMEs to challenge poor government buying practice through a Mystery Shopper service. Elizabeth, as a member of the Cabinet Office SME Panel, said of the announcement; “As a mid tier company with over 22 years as trusted suppliers to government, Informed Solutions is a committed supporter of the government’s SME agenda. “Moreover, I am acutely aware of the challenges facing SMEs in securing government contracts, but I am also conscious of the substantial economic benefits that such contracts bring both directly to the UK and as leverage to UK export opportunities. “In my capacity as a member of the Cabinet Office SME Panel and a techUK Main Board Director, I very much welcome this announcement as a concrete indication that government is taking procurement forward in the right direction.”

Theo Paphitis names Many Hands Champions At the end of March, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity (RMCH) held its Many Hands Campaign finale at the Midland Hotel, Manchester. The campaign, spearheaded for the third time by renowned businessman Theo Paphitis, has raised £52,000 from 52 participating companies since last year’s launch. The famed Dragon’s Den star presented TK Components, a luxury kitchen company based in Denton and their partners in the competition, health and fitness club Bodycheck, Glossop as winner of Many Hands 2015, following an impressive pitch to judges. The Many Hands Campaign, which was first launched in 2008, encouraged North-West businesses to support the charity by signing up to a fundraising target of £1,000 each over the course of twelve months. The Many Hands finale saw five shortlisted companies pitching to a panel of judges with the aim of becoming champion of Many Hands 2015. The winning company showed the most initiative in developing an exciting fundraising concept; in this case it was ‘children helping children’. TK Components’ team actually
consisted of the children of owners from both companies, something never seen before at a Many Hands Campaign! The five young girls, Adarna, Damara and Santia Hazelhurst along with their friends Sophie and Lucy Campbell, persuaded their parents to let them organise a fun-run alongside a wide range of other fundraising ventures. Commenting on the Campaign, long-term supporter of the charity, Theo Paphitis, said: “I would like to congratulate all businesses involved in the campaign for their efforts in exceeding the fundraising target of £50,000, a truly impressive feat. Greater Manchester LEP area has the country’s highest economic growth rate The March 2015 edition of the Manchester Monitor – a snapshot of the conurbation’s latest socioeconomic indicators - highlights that Greater Manchester’s Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) area has the fastest growing economy in the country. The data obtained from a recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) release show that Greater Manchester experienced growth of 4.6% (£2.5 billion) in 2013 - the highest growth rate of all LEPs in England; exceeding both London’s GVA growth of 4.0% and 4.3% in Birmingham. In 2013, GVA in Greater Manchester
was recorded as £56.3 billion, rising from £39.5 billion in 2003 and representing an increase of £16.8 billion (42.5%) over the decade. The latest data available for Greater Manchester has been drawn together for the Monitor by New Economy, Greater Manchester’s economic intelligence and policy advisors. It shows: • Office take-up in Greater Manchester is up 67.8% since this time last year • Hotel Occupancy in Greater Manchester was 67.6% in January 2015 • House prices are up by 4.1% with
the average house in Greater Manchester now costing £108,409 (January 2015) – although this is lower than the 6.7% growth seen in England and Wales. • Assault attendances at each of Greater Manchester’s eight hospital trusts’ local emergency departments are at an all-time low, with a decrease of 8.3% since 2013. John Holden, director of research at New Economy, said: “It’s excellent news that Greater Manchester has emerged as the country’s strongest economic performer when compared with other Local Enterprise Partnership areas.
Given the size of the city region’s economy, this confirms that Greater Manchester is one of the UK’s most significant growth zones. “Indeed there are many encouraging economic indicators emerging from this month’s Manchester Monitor – office space take-up and hotel occupancy are both especially buoyant and the labour market is performing well. Coupled with the major investments aimed at strengthening economic growth that Greater Manchester has recently secured, 2015 has started off on a very strong footing to maintain and enhance this growth trajectory.”

1st Class Holidays wins award for a record thirteenth time Manchester based tailor-made specialist 1st Class Holidays proved that thirteen isn’t always an unlucky number at the British Annual Canadian Travel Awards held in London at the end of February, when they were again named Best Operator to Canada - for the thirteenth time! The event, held at BAFTA and hosted by the Canadian Tourism Commission, was attended by UK travel professionals and tour operators as well as representatives from the various Canadian Provincial Tourist Boards, journalists and Canadian suppliers. Voted for by the UK’s Canada Specialist travel agents, the award recognises the company that gives the best service and value, and is an indication of the tour operator that
agents trust the most to look after their client’s dream holiday. Managing Director Paul Ainsworth commented: “This is a truly humbling experience. To be so consistently voted top operator by travel agents is an indication that the values and principles we laid down when we created the company 19 years ago still hold true today. Our dedication to high levels of service and total commitment to the independent travel trade continue to be appreciated by our agent partners. “This award belongs to all the team we have at 1st Class who go the extra mile every day to ensure we give truly outstanding service and comes on the back of the highest ever score awarded to us by Investor in Customers earlier this year.”

£10 million Govern showcase itself as Northern destinations will receive £10 million of Government funding to boost tourism and attract international visitors from across the world, including the USA and China, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Culture Secretary Sajid Javid announced today (Friday). The funding will go towards a ground-breaking new initiative that will see tourism bodies, such as ‘Cumbria Tourism’ and ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’, amongst others, work
together to sell what’s unique about the North under one umbrella. The North has seen fantastic growth from overseas visitors in recent years, but there is more to do. The move is expected to pump £177 million into the region’s economy, creating over 3,200 jobs and resulting in two million more nights spent in local hotels and B&Bs. This initiative will leverage the strength of the Government’s GREAT brand in transforming the North into a top global tourist destination.

The Wood Awards celebrates the very best use of wood in British architecture, furniture and design, and this year the organisers received a record entry of 300 projects. On the night, Jack Badger was honoured with the Judges’ Special Award for its hand carved oak gothic doors, which it designed and created for a property in York. The carvings were adapted from historical designs to compliment the overall style of the property and created specifically to meet the client’s taste. While competition was tough throughout all categories, Jack Badger stood out for its inventive and creative use of traditional techniques to create a finished
Commenting on the award win, Ben Naylor, managing director of Jack Badger, said: “We were up against so many talented carpenters and inspiring projects, so it really is an honour to have won this award and we’re overwhelmed by the feedback from the judges and our peers. “At Jack Badger, our craft is our lives. We’ve spent decades between us perfecting our skills and knowledge, looking at traditional techniques and finding new ways of using these in contemporary homes.” The Jack Badger team’s way of working encompasses the time tested construction methods of the old, combined with a deep understanding of how to use timber in modern properties with the challenges of central heating on the inside along with the wet British weather outside. Such elements can cause the wood to expand and contract, but by allowing the wood to move in a natural way while using traditional construction methods, the team produced doors that are stable, built to last and aesthetically pleasing. nment funding to help the North a top tourist destination Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, said: “I’m immensely proud of the stunning countryside, history and culture that the north has to offer, and yet all too often international visitors flock to London rather than our northern beauty spots and cities. “As the most senior member of Government from the North, I invited local people to get involved with my Northern Futures initiative to strengthen the economy and ensure the north is on the map as a top tourist destination. “This funding will help bring together existing work being done to boost tourism right across the north, showcasing major events such as the Tour de Yorkshire whilst creating a single vision for showing off the jewels of the north for all to see.”
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, commented: “As part of our long-term economic plan to build the Northern Powerhouse, today the government is committing money to a northern tourism fund. From outstanding areas of natural beauty to some of our great cultural centres so near to one another, the potential for attracting more tourism and jobs to the North of England is huge. “This fund will see the tourism bodies for the north working together to create a coherent plan that identifies the region’s strengths into a collective offer for the world to see. This is the essence of our plan for a Northern Powerhouse, connecting its strengths so that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
Culture Secretary, Sajid Javid, said: “Visitors to Britain want to see world-class heritage, culture and stunning landscapes, and the North of England has these in abundance. Our record tourism boom is already building the Northern Powerhouse, delivering jobs and growth as part of our long-term economic plan. “By helping destinations work closely together to attract tourists we will ensure everywhere from Leeds to the Lake District benefits. This, in turn, will set an example across the country, showing what can be achieved when we work collaboratively.” UK tourism has boomed since 2012 with record growth in 2013 and 2014. Overseas tourists spent a mammoth £21.7 billion in 2014 and that number is expected to
continue to rise with 2015 eclipsing 2014 by passing the £22bn mark for the first time. The government wants to ensure that regions across the country benefit from this tourism boom. This tourism fund for the North is a new approach to achieving this as part of the Government’s long term economic plan. One part of the campaign will be to bring influential travel journalists to experience the best of the region’s festivals, cultural and sporting attractions. These will include the Manchester International Festival this July. The destinations are also working together to make it easier for potential visitors looking online to see the full range of Northern attractions on offer.

New Manchester based bank gains regulatory approval and unveils heavyweight non-exec board OakNorth, a new lending bank based on Queen Street in Manchester geared for lending to high-growth small and medium sized companies, has gained a banking licence and appointed a number of business leaders to its Non-Executive Board as it seeks to shake up lending to growth SMEs. Ratan Engineer, former CFO at Invesco, becomes OakNorth’s chairman, and Robert Burgess, former chief executive of Alliance Trust Savings, becomes a nonexecutive director of the new bank that will start this summer providing short-term working capital loans and term loans to small and medium sized businesses, and savings accounts to retail customers. OakNorth Bank’s founders Rishi Khosla and Joel Perlman are Chief Executive Officer and Chief Strategy Officer respectively. They previously founded and developed Copal Amba, an investment research and analytics
company, into a 2,500 employee industry leader, which was acquired by Moody’s Corporation. The bank recognises that fast-growing SMEs have been structurally under-served in the UK, with a relative dearth of lending services targeted specifically at them. Major banks have focused their services on larger companies, or property rich SMEs and have often not given strongly growing small companies due consideration. OakNorth will use financial technology that enables faster service and a superior customer experience. It will accept multiple collateral types, not just property, unlike much of the secured lending offered to SMEs by other banks. Rishi Khosla, Chief Executive Officer, OakNorth, said: “These appointments give us an exceptionally strong and wellbalanced leadership team that will foster the growth and resilience
of the business. OakNorth will be a positive force in SME banking, blending new technology to deliver a better customer experience with a capability to accept a wider range of collateral for loans.” Lord Turner, Senior Independent Director, OakNorth, said: “Fastgrowing small and medium sized businesses play a pivotal role in the economy, but they find it more difficult to access finance in Britain than they would in many other countries, such as the US or Germany. OakNorth understands that it doesn’t have to be this way, and we see an opportunity to focus on this market of growth SMEs, be more flexible in the range of collateral we accept from them and invest in IT that improves customer service.” OakNorth’s fintech platform will enable short-term working capital loans to be accessed within short time frames, through a customer friendly process and is designed
to provide a distinctive customer experience. The model is designed so customers don’t need to sacrifice speed of application and likelihood of success to access a good rate. Term loans will be offered through Relationship Managers at regional offices, initially in London and Manchester. “Growth companies provide half of all employment growth in Britain, but have been neglected by banks in favour of big business,” said Rishi Khosla, founder of OakNorth. “When smaller growth companies have tried to access loans, they’ve often been refused, required security against property or served at a glacial pace. That’s why we’re launching OakNorth – to use financial technology and a new approach to lending that gives smaller growth companies a banking service one would normally associate with larger corporate clients.”
Informative forum launches for North West Landlords Property investors in the North West gathered recently to share their thoughts and knowledge and identified new opportunities for the local buy-to-let market. Discussions at the property investment forum held by Edward Mellor, in partnership with Auction Finance Limited, focussed on common risks and concerns landlords experienced, the growing popularity of HMO’s (Houses of Multiple Occupancy) and Labour’s proposals for three year tenancies and rent control. Advice from the National Landlords Association and a HMO specialist was also available. The informative forum was launched for, and attended by, both investors new to the buy-tolet market as well as those with a diverse portfolio. Emma Mander, head of lettings development at Edward Mellor said: “We’re seeing a rise in the market for properties that could be used for HMOs and many investors were interested to find out how to benefit from the improved and upcoming markets.
Edward Mellor is now offering a new and exclusive service for investors, the Platinum Membership. The membership is free and unique in today’s market, the service offers a dedicated personal shopper to help guide investors through their buy to let journey from start to finish.
“The event was fully booked and we’re already looking at planning future events where we can give further information, especially with the election coming up, they’ll be potential changes that landlords will want to consider and be kept up to speed on.” The next North West forum for property investors will be held on the 29th April 2015 at the Britannia Country House hotel. To find out more contact Emma Mander at Edward Mellor on 0161 443 4781 or visit www.
Emma and her team have developed the personal shopper experience over the past 12 months, based on the growing need for advice in the buy-to-let market today, and it has proved very popular with new and existing Investors. The Great Manches
Busines
Now in its 5th year, the Great Manchester Business Conference has become a slick, informative, entertaining conference run as a fast-paced interview style production.
Laura Morgan and Chris Baguley from sponsors Bridging Finance
Friday 6 March saw the great and the good from Manchester’s business community gather at The Point at Old Trafford for an event not just offering keynote speeches from business leaders, expert analysis and interviews, but celebrating the positive impact of Greater Manchester as a region on the UK as a whole. The presentation and style of the event worked very well. The conference covered many different subjects, following a set programme starting with a keynote address, then an interview with the keynote speaker, and ending with a lively panel debate offering an exchange between industry experts on that particular subject. The conference also offered some great opportunities for networking, with a sponsor’s area set up in a break-out room. After registration the conference was introduced by John Ashcroft, Chief Executive of pro-manchester, and also Chief Economist for the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce,
‘‘
both of which organised the event, and Stephanie McGovern, award winning financial journalist and part of the BBC Breakfast team.
would you see, certainly, in this country, a more sophisticated and robust partnership.”
First speaker, and opening with a short keynote was Sir Howard Bernstein, Chief Executive of Manchester City Council. Sir Howard’s speech covered two topics. Firstly, collaboration, particularly mapping Greater Manchester’s journey through the establishment of strategic collaborations. For example, the creation of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and ultimately the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities. Sir Howard explained: “The partnership between the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities and local business had enabled businesses to play a very full part not only in shaping the strategic direction of Greater Manchester but crucially, also, allowing the business sector to take direct responsibility for the operational delivery of a number of key economic development functions. Nowhere, in my view,
Sir Howard then moved on to Devolution and what it means for Greater Manchester: “Devolution is important when looking at making us financially self-sustaining. We need to see more growth, and that is the development of more business, the drive to create more activities to generate more tax. We also need to tackle dependability, reduce the demand for high dependency services. So, a combination of both growth and reform of public services, which can be achieved through devolution, will help Greater Manchester develop. “Another important role of devolution will be the absolute need to rebalance our national economy. This is not about how do we stop London growing, which is actually crucial to the UK’s economy, but instead we ask how do we reduce the gap in productivity and GVA.” Next on the agenda was a discussion about making Manchester a better
The Pro-Manchester Conference is always a great event, and this year was another well planned, inspiring offer. I particularly liked the session from James Akrigg at Microsoft about how cities can work smarter, it was inspirational, a little scary - but very exciting! Another highly entertaining and very informative session was from Tim Hanes at BVCA with his ‘10 reasons to be cheerful in Greater Manchester’. From a college perspective it’s essential to attend as you hear from leaders across the city and beyond, about future developments such as those for skills, science, media/ digital, financial, devoManc - and it’s also a great networking opportunity. It helps us position our offer to businesses across the city, so we can work with them to meet the many challenges they face. The fact that the conference is on our doorstep at LCCC is a bonus - but I’d travel miles to attend it!

place to work, visit and live, and featured a presentation by Vaughan Allen, Chief Executive of CityCo, and Kate Vokes, Marketing and HR Director of Bruntwood. James Akrigg, Head of Technology for Partners, Microsoft, then gave a summary of some very interesting recently developed technology, plus some technology in development. James specifically looked at the issues surrounding making Manchester a smarter city. He also demonstrated new technology in the form of a real-time translator, to be used in many applications. The demonstration also showed how the programme not only translated on the fly, but also made the translation’s voice the same as the original speaker. A quick change of direction followed in the form of presentations from Keith Morgan, Chief Executive of British Business Bank and Lindsay Whitelaw, Chief Executive of URICA. The subject was ‘Are we doing enough for our SMEs and startups in Greater Manchester?’ and offered a comprehensive look at the problems encountered through cash-flow issues, down to all the many different access to finance routes that many businesses are not aware of. The whole event was progressing at a healthy gallop, with the team of AV technicians working in tandem with hosts Stephanie McGovern and John Ashcroft, and the feeling we got viewing the proceedings was of a slick, professionally presented TV programme complete with presentations, interviews, panel debates and even pre-recorded video interviews with contributors like John Jones, promanchester Chairman, and Sir Richard Leese, Manchester City Council Leader.

After a swift break for coffee and networking the delegates quickly returned to a presentation from Manchester Airport Group’s Chief Executive Charlie Cornish. numbers of 22 million before the downturn. We expect a million more passengers this year, plus another million the year after. “The group’s profits are double what they were 4 years ago and we expect to grow at a rate to return profits in 2 years of treble what they were 4 years ago. So we are making considerable progress, and connectivity is at the heart of what we do.” Charlie then went on to discuss specific developments, including Airport City, plus expanded on the importance of connectivity and the HS2 and HS3 rail links. He underlined the importance of linking Northern cities to the
Airport, creating a true ‘Northern Gateway’ offering one of the most comprehensive international hubs offering destinations across the globe. Observing potential issues with HS2, particularly the problem of Southern migration once the route is completed, Charlie offered a positive slant. He suggested that as the current plans and development of not just the massive investment in and around the Airport, but the whole of Greater Manchester as a region were completed, HS2 would then start to pull people North. The remaining events for the morning featured a discussion with Clive Memmott, Chief Executive of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and Arun Narayan, UK India Business Council Director, on the International agenda for business in Greater Manchester. Specifically the issues surrounding importing and exporting. There was also a skills panel, with presentations from Professor Jean-Noël Ezingeard, Deputy ViceChancellor, MMU, and a review of Manchester’s ‘Knowledge Corridor’ by Manchester science partnership Chief Executive Rowena Burns, plus an invigorating presentation of ‘10 reasons for Manchester to be cheerful’ from Tim Hames, Director General of the BVCA.
impassioned and heartfelt talk about what engineering and manufacturing means for the Greater Manchester economy, and indeed for any economy. He especially highlighted the importance of promoting engineering and manufacturing as early as possible in schools and colleges. After a brief summary from John and Stephanie, the conference finished with an excellent buffet lunch and extended session of networking, giving many of the delegates a chance to chat to the speakers and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere of business networking at The Point.

Apprenticeships give companies the opportunity to recruit fresh, local young talent to their business. They represent the social mix of their communities. By employing an apprentice, companies can improve stability in their workforce while having the opportunity to train an apprentice to work for their company alongside their workforce. The mixture of on and off-the-job learning ensures apprentices gain the skills and qualifications that work best for

her Apprenticeship, Yasmine (21) worked in Retail. She’d been successful in completing all her competency levels as well as gaining promotions and transfers to other stores. However after a few years she became bored with the repetitiveness of each day and felt that she wasn’t realising her full potential. When her father, a gas and heating engineer, suggested she joined him for a few days’ work experience with him, she was unsure. Within a week of starting work alongside her father, Yasmine has already learned a lot more than she’d anticipated, and soon felt comfortable working alongside other workmen in commercial properties, as well as dealing with customers in their own homes. She relished the fact that every day was different, and she was always learning something new. Counting down to theTrafford It seems since we started getting involved with the first Trafford Business Expo last year there has been an increase in business events and networking opportunities right across Greater Manchester. This must be a reflection of the current strong recovery felt in the region, but equally should be attributed to focusing on the natural need for a forward looking business sector to reach out and stand up to be noticed.
Good business events are not simply down to riding the momentum of a bullish economy, but are inevitably driven by creating the right style of event, at the right venue, at the right time. It also doesn’t hurt to offer free admission, free car parking, a choice of free high calibre speakers, free refreshments and lunch, plus a host of added value features such breakout areas and the added interest generated by Trafford Council’s Co-
located Meet the Buyer event. Visiting the Expo has to be important for any business within not just Trafford but Greater Manchester. The business growth currently seen in the borough is now faster than the Northwest average, with general earnings up 20% compared to the rest of Greater Manchester. With huge businesses such as Kelloggs, Regatta, Peel Group,
Proctor & Gamble and L’Oreal situated locally to the venue, not to mention the 1,300 other businesses a stone’s throw away in Trafford Park, it could be said that attending an event such as the Trafford Business Expo can help grow your business in the company of some very large and iconic brands. Both exhibiting and visiting the Expo puts businesses in contact with key decision makers from other businesses. The vast majority

Business Expo... RRG Toyota attended the Trafford Business Expo of 2014 because it was new, looked exciting and was competitively priced to previous Expos we had exhibited at. So we took the decision to invest our time and money and Exhibit. We took six vehicles - Toyota, Lexus, Kia, Mazda and Nissan - and created a mini showroom outside, where visitors could see the cars and sign up for a test drive on the day. I met quality visitors and exhibitors, and was blown away to see so many queuing up to get in. We are going to exhibit again this year which looks to be bigger and better, and hope to build on that. Warren Eaton, Group Business Centre Manager, RRG Toyota
of both visitors and exhibitors are there to engage the wider business community. Essentially, in many cases the people you meet will want to engage others to buy or use their products or services, however, all businesses need other businesses to survive. In order to sell a product or service there is an inherent requirement to understand how that product or service functions. This includes the requirements of specific support from external businesses. You buy to sell – and sell to buy. Key events like the Trafford Business Expo can create exactly the right atmosphere to encourage this. The event is organised as last year by innov8 Conference Services, and James Caldwell, Show Director commented: “Exhibiting at the correct event can be the most powerful marketing tool available to any organisation. The majority of visitors who attended the Trafford Business Expo in 2014 were the key decision makers of the companies. These are the crucial people you want to notice your business, so use the exhibition to your advantage and increase your exposure; visitors
attend the exhibition with an open mind, ready to discuss business opportunities. Our aim is to provide no more than 2 types of the same company from each industry at the event, therefore providing a clear opportunity to promote your business ahead of your competitors. Exhibiting is also a chance to touch base with your existing customers and gain valuable feedback on your business, products and services from the people who know your work. There are over 11,500 businesses established in Trafford enabling great opportunities for local business partnerships to form. We have been thrilled by the amount of daily enquiries and registrations that we have been receiving regarding exhibiting and attending the Trafford Business Expo.” The next edition of Trafford Business Connect magazine will feature an in-depth preview of the event and will re-visit come of the highlights that made last year’s Expo such a phenomenal success.
Exhibiting at the inaugural Trafford Business Expo 2014 provided an excellent opportunity for Bennett Verby to market our accountancy business in a cost effective and innovative way. We found that it gave us a powerful platform to reach out to existing clients, meet new clients, and increase brand awareness, therefore we were quick to grab the opportunity to exhibit at the 2015 event. Last year The Point provided a modern and impressive venue for us to showcase our services and we were impressed by the number and variety of businesses that were represented. On the day, with over 400 guests, the Expo was well attended. The value for us, as a business, was having the chance to meet and talk with visitors to our stand. This enabled us to initiate and build good quality relationships. We followed these leads up after the show by phone or with face-to-face meetings and as a result we took on a new client a month later. We are delighted to be exhibiting again this year and to be part of what promises to be an even bigger and more exciting event. Sarah Allen, Head of Business Development, Bennett Verby LLP
Premium Collections Limited relies on contacts made at exhibitions as one of the most productive methods of networking. Of the fifteen or so exhibitions and expos we attend each year the Trafford Business Expo 2014 was by far the best and most promising for us. As a local business serving the local community and beyond we rely heavily on contact with other local businesses both for the services we provide and the for goods and services we require. Trafford should host more flagship events like this one to prove that you don’t need to travel to other major cities for great events. It was extremely well marketed and promoted and was one of the busiest events I had ever been to. We also made some very good contacts with fellow exhibitors. The event was excellent and easy to get to from Trafford, the city centre and further afield around the North West. I jumped at the chance to book the 2015 event early and secure my stand space. K-Club breakfasts in Salford Business networking can come in many different guises, and can work to many specific formulas, suitable for many different business cultures. At the beginning of February, Trafford Business Connect were invited to attend an exclusive breakfast hosted by Keystone Business Network. K-Club, as it is known, is a rapidly growing private network of entrepreneurs and business leaders, and aims to build a trusted network of high calibre contacts that meet at regular networking breakfasts in both Liverpool and Manchester. The February event was held at the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford, and certainly attracted a fantastic group of business leaders in a dynamic and exciting venue. After introductions from Keystone’s Chairman Fred Stone, and Associate Charlie Mcintyre, Elizabeth Clark, CEO and founder of dreamagility. com took to the rostrum to deliver a presentation entitled ‘Google moves in mysterious ways’, in which she explains the methods behind placing targeted advertising on Google’s rapidly evolving product listing adverts platform, Elizabeth explained “PLAs are essentially successful because they provide higher conversion rates and lower costs than traditional Google text ads. The consumer nowadays recognises that being specific when searching, and using the ability to drill down when searching using specific key data or even product codes, will ensure they find the item they want at the best possible price. “This is all driven by feeds, which is all your product data - everything you sell. In the case of retail feeds, you can have your price, product name, product number and description. So, your new ad copy is your entire product data. This means you have to be accurate. If you have incorrect information, mis-matching

product codes against descriptions for example, Google will penalise you. It’s also key to ensure your feeds are compliant, especially with everchanging guidelines from Google. “Last year, we passed the point of more searches taking place on mobiles against desktops, and it looks like this method of product placement is here to stay.” The next speaker was Kevin Doran, Chief Investment Officer at Brown Shipley. Kevin took the opportunity to deliver an insightful presentation entitled ‘Poll Dancing’ on the likely outcome of the UK general election this year, with a specific look at what this would mean for interest rates, investment intentions and asset prices around the world. Kevin started with an opinion on how to view the economy. “Our belief is that when you look at the economy you cannot look at it in isolation. In order to understand it, you need to look at it through the prism of history and politics. “We would like to share our passion for polls. Analysing the data gives us the ability to make some informed predictions about the economy based on information gathered in this process. Last year we predicted there wouldn’t be an interest rate rise until after the May Election, and this proved to be true. “Going back to history it is interesting to note that since the 2010 Election there hasn’t been a single boundary change in the UK. This leaves us with 650 seats
Elizabeth Clark, CEO, dreamagility.com
available, out of which a party wishing to secure an outright majority would need 326 seats won on May 7 this year. “From a prediction point of view, it makes it far easier to look at potential outcomes as we can work with historical data for each of these 650 seats.” Kevin then went into detail on his analysis of the political outcome for the election, giving a ‘cast-iron’ prediction of a coalition government being formed, and not only this but offered a view of how that coalition would be represented. And, by reading the current polling trends, Kevin suggested the next Government would be a coalition between Labour and the SNPs. He then explained: “So why are politics so important to the economy? I suggest that politics are only part of the story. The Bank of England has a strong impact. We think interest rates are far too low. They are producing asset-based inflation in the form of property prices, which are, particularly the case in London, being over-inflated. “Now, the dangerous thing about this situation is that money is just like oil. It is a commodity, and the Bank of England has a monopoly on the supply of this. And the price of money are interest rates, which in our view are too low. The reason we can say this is that the Bank of England is now passing ‘macro prudential policies’. These are laws that affect the banking industry. In essence, allowing the Bank of England to have
“In fact, one of the first of these was to restrict the amount of credit to first time buyers. Rather than raise interest rates the Bank of England are starting to restrict areas of banking to solve the issue. “So, back to predictions. The influence that the Bank of England is exerting over the economy is only currently affecting groups like first time buyers. However, it’s our view that more people will experience the influence on their personal situations, causing more lobbying over the next few years, which makes a strong case for the Bank to lose their independence – in our view this will happen by 2025. So, to summarise, according to how we’re reading the polls, plus looking at history, we are looking at a coalition government forming on May 7. This is predicted to take up to 30 days to happen (not the 5 days it took in 2010). The domestic economy is fairly robust currently, with not much real world inflation. However, asset-based inflation will lead to real world inflation, and after a quiet Q2 after the election, interest rates will rise very slowly by August of this year.” Kevin’s predictions are based on a number of criteria, particularly the use of polls, and it will certainly be interesting to see how the future develops. One key point he raised was that in order to understand the direction of future economic growth, facts and figures weren’t enough. It’s important to developing a rounded view of the economic future to take into account historical precedents coupled with political predictions. Also, taking on board other economic forces like the Bank of England’s influence are also crucial in arriving at an informed prediction on the UK’s future economic state.

Forever Manchester celebrate 25 years in style They said it all kicks off at 6pm with drinks in the Midland foyer, followed by a serious night of partying and fundraising, followed by an ‘afterparty’ party at Manchester House from 1pm onwards.
This could only mean one thing. Forever Manchester were celebrating in style their 25th birthday on February 20 and it looked like a wild evening was in store! So, off we went to be greeted by Captain Manchester (yes - the manc superhero was in attendance throughout the night). Both events are scheduled to run regularly, and the feeling was that we had started a process to create a real effort to open the gates of Trafford Park and allow the normally isolated businesses the chance to get together and to finally say hello to their neighbours, and in doing so build a closer business community.
‘‘
The first Trafford Park Networking Group meeting highlighted the great breadth and strength of the businesses in Trafford Park, with companies as diverse as B&M Waste, UK Fast, Regatta and The’e’word amongst the 100 delegates in attendance. With over 1,000 companies and 35,000 jobs, Trafford Park is a great asset for the economy regionally and nationally, and if we can help the resident businesses work together, shortening their supply chains and increasing collaboration and innovation, it will help drive forward the economic upturn for the area. The size of the opportunity has been demonstrated by the number of people who attended this first event, and hopefully we can build on this at future meetings.

Cheese and wine bring
businesses together
Local Business Club donates over £6,000 to charity The LifeCentre, situated on Washway Road between Sale and Altrincham, was the venue for the first open networking event hosted by the Timperley & Sale Business Club on Friday 6 February. The club has been growing as a notfor-profit business networking group for over three years now, and during that time has donated more than £6,000 to worthy local good causes and charities. To mark this impressive milestone, the club, which normally meets at 6.45am at the Bean & Brush Café every Friday morning in the heart of Sale, had invited many of their previous charity recipients to enjoy an afternoon networking with a great selection of invited local businesses. Never doing things by half, the club presented a local clarinet quartet led by club member Martin Kay from J2M Consultancy who provided a sublime musical background to the event, and also featured Marc Hough from Cork of the North bringing a cheese and wine sampling experience. Over 60 local businesses attended, and with the charities also in attendance took in a frenetic session of speed networking as well as general business networking within
the fantastic surroundings of the LifeCentre, whose ambassador Helen Allen (also a club member) enjoyed the role of host for the afternoon. Speaking at the event was Laura Evans from Fathom IT (founder of the group) and club chair Karen Rawcliffe, who both laid out the group’s attitude of donating most of the membership fees to charities and deserving local causes. Local Charity the Alex Hulme Foundation was represented by Dave Hulme, Father to Alex, who sadly died from a form of childhood cancer, and who has been supported by many individual businesses present on the day as well as the club itself. Dave recognised the importance of local business networking, especially with providing support for local charities: “Without many of the businesses in this room today, and the practical support they have offered by hosting events like this,
we would certainly not have been able to raise the incredible amount of donations that have seen the Foundation grow over the past couple of years. It’s thanks to people like David Randall (club member and local IFA) with his incredible channel swim, and the fantastic donations from businesses and organisations like the Timperley & Sale Business Club, that keeps us on the path of providing a credible treatment for the terrible form of childhood cancer that is still taking young lives.”
way I would ever have approached and spoken to that many business people. Thanks again!” For more information about the group or to make arrangements to come and visit at the Bean & Brush on a Friday morning please contact Jon Cheetham on 07971 575977 or Laura Evans on 07976 894419.
Jenny Al-Radhi, Family Law Support & Resolution, also commented on the afternoon: “What a fantastic networking event. It was the best I have ever been to. There is no

social media
4 Reasons B2B Businesses should be investing the time on Social Media I hear excuses all the time from B2B Business about how Social Media doesn’t work for their business. “I can see how it will work for a restaurant or a shop, but not my business” “My business is boring - nobody wants to see tweets on XYZ” “I don’t know how I’d find something new to write about every day - it’s a static business” And yet I’ve worked with B2B businesses in the past 12 months that have earnt five figure sums via Twitter alone - businesses that aren’t on the high street and have a fairly static businesses offering. These are businesses that find something new to say every day. Here are 4 Reasons B2B Businesses Should Be Investing The Time On Social Media:
1. Social Media gives your invisible business a voice To all intents and purposes, many small independent B2B businesses are invisible unless they get out and market themselves. There are no government funded campaigns to encourage businesses to “shop local” with their local friendly accountancy or law practice in order to save our side streets and empty offices in the same way we hear about “Saving The High Street”. Social media is the platform that
gives you a voice and a touch point with your target market. And like just as many restaurants and retailers take to twitter, so to are many new startups and established B2B businesses. Altrincham for instance has the well known legal district, but despite a large number of companies being based there, two firms tend to instantly spring to mind when you think Altrincham Solicitors. And those are the two firms that are active every single day on twitter with not just one account, but multiple twitter accounts for each key member of staff. Trevor Holt of local Office Supplies and Stationery company Holt Business Solutions uses the hashtag #worldfamouswithin5miles - and that’s the question you need to be asking - is your B2B business at the top of everyone’s mind and therefore at the tip of everyone’s tongue within your local area? If you’re not present on twitter everyday and active on LinkedIn to many you simply are invisible.
2. Your customers are in “business mode” on Social Media Believe it or not B2C Brands have it tough - they’re competing for attention on facebook against baby photos, Buzzfeed articles and holiday snaps. It’s a noisy market place and you’ve
really got to go big on the creative and excel to stand out from the crowd. You’ve got to trendjack better than your competitors and have visual content with the WOW factor to really standout. Social Media works for B2B because the people you’re trying to connect with on LinkedIn and Twitter are already in heads down business mode. If you can present a service or product that makes their life easier, helps their business to grow, can provide the same level of service at a better price then you will have receptive ears. Stats show that if you post a status 20 times a month on LinkedIn you will reach 60% of your LinkedIn connections ... and yet many people don’t actively use LinkedIn. And on Twitter 72% of followers are more likely to buy something from a business they follow ... and yet many B2B businesses don’t see the value in a twitter conversation. In the past five years I’ve used the services of Solicitors, Web Designers, Printers and IT specialists - all because of conversations that started on twitter.
3. The psychology of Social Media If I told you that some of the worst examples of Social Media marketing come from the voluntary and charity sector you’d probably be surprised. Often the barrier to Social Media is not technological, but the psychology of Social Media, and the reason charities often fail on Social Media is they forget all the great storytelling and narratives they use offline and go straight into social selling.
that approach Social Media from a relationship building perspective rather than a sales perspective will actually sell.
4. B2C businesses will offer your B2B business a wider audience In the last month I’ve been retweeted by Deborah Meaden from Dragons Den (198k twitter followers) and our blogs have been tweeted out a number of times by Social Media Thought Leader Mari Smith (350k twitter followers). It’s the support from local B2C businesses that put ourselves in the spotlight several times a day though The restaurants that retweet us because we care enough to take foodporn photos or the new retail business that loves the fact we tweet about their new business to 7,500 twitter followers and wants to give us some love back. Social Media is inherently human to human and people love to be talked about whether they’re B2C or B2B. Next time you laugh at the person taking photos of their food in a restaurant, tweeting constantly about a new bar that’s opening or talking about the local football team - it’s worth noting that their updates are probably reaching more eyes than yours and they’re probably winning more business via Social Media through the act of simply being human.
And now it’s over to you - it’s 2015 - time to drop the but’s and it’s time to get social.
B2B Businesses are often schooled in the art of social etiquette via face to face business networking - the realisation that givers gain, the etiquette of not hard selling, the building of relationships and the idea that you have two ears and one mouth. It’s these ideas that fit perfectly with Social Media and just as in business networking meetings those

digital marketing
Google turns its attention to the mobile user experience ...and so should you! Quality of the searcher experience when using a website should always be an important consideration. Google is renowned for rewarding websites which deliver the best quality results for the searcher. This has always included relevance to the search term, content, on-site security and even page loading speed amongst others. And now how it performs on a mobile device becomes part of the Google algorithm. Google estimates that over 50% of all web traffic now comes from mobile and this is continually rising. To address this websites are already being given greater ranking when they cater for this growing market. As early as 2013, Google began to penalize sites which simply redirected all mobile users to a standard homepage instead of their chosen page and these penalties could now become far more severe. Google is now viewing websites through the eyes of the user Google crawling bots have traditionally indexed and analysed pages by searching directly through the code on the page. Since May 2014, these same bots have been uprated and have been rendering pages to see exactly what the end user sees. This is for all devices whether it is a desktop, tablet or mobile phone and this now presents some serious implications for webmaster and the way sites are constructed.
Poorly formatted sites will incur a penalty
increased and reduced rankings accordingly.
There are a number of factors which will raise a flag for the website crawlers; potentially bringing a ranking penalty and demotion for the website.
What you should do NOW
Pages which display perfectly on a desktop may render on a mobile device with small or illegible fonts, badly sized page layouts and text blocks. The Google bot will simulate the full mobile user experience and where users have to excessively pan and zoom just to navigate a page Google will mark down the site accordingly. Google is doing everything to protect its reputation The search engine giant has always been fiercely protective of its reputation for delivering optimum search results to the end user. At the same time, this brings positive impact and reward to those sites which do everything to follow this quality code of practice. The positive ranking factors of relevance, content and originality are still in place but these are effectively being reinforced when the actual appearance of the page is also factored in. Google has calculated that 61% of users will not revisit a site which offers a poor browsing experience on a mobile phone. This alone will have a big impact on how successful your website is on conversions, especially when you consider that the majority of searchers will only engage with a website on their third or fourth visit, the early part of browsing on the internet is the short list selection process, if your website does not make it onto the searcher’s short list then there is no chance of winning the sale! The quickest way for Google to encourage webmasters to upgrade their sites for mobile use is with the carrot and the stick or in other words
The mobile experience for the end user is not yet factored into the UK search rankings. However, Google often releases guidelines such as these to give fair notice to webmasters before full integration into the ranking algorithm. It is best practice to upgrade all mobile pages now to gain first mover advantage over your competition before the changes are brought into effect. This way, even if the changes are
months away, the experience for your visitors will increase dramatically and you will see an instant increase in user satisfaction and conversions.

finance
Raising finance - the options
for ‘Northern Powerhouse’ businesses Raising finance is not as straight forward as it used to be, with banks not being able to lend as they once were. In this article, we will take a look at some of the alternative options to obtaining funding for your business growth, and how to seek advice from the right sources. As identified by the Chancellor at the recent budget announcement, the North West is the fastest growing region economically in the UK, so now is a good time to consider funding options accelerating your business growth.
Crowdfunding Essentially, crowdfunding does what is says on the tin - organisations such as Funding Circle, KickStarter and CrowdCube organise for large
numbers of people to contribute small sums of money towards funding a venture or project. Although a fairly new method of raising finance, Crowdfunding has taken off in a big way as it has allowed investors to earn better rates of interest than the banks have offered of late, so it’s a win-win situation for all involved.
Growth Voucher Scheme Another modern method of funding is the government’s growth voucher scheme that can be used to fund costs of professional advice, such as assistance with financial and business plans. If eligible, the programme can help you get business advice on finance, recruiting and developing staff, making the most of digital
technology plus much more, in addition to potentially receiving a voucher for the value of up to £2,000 if randomly selected. For further information visit: www.gov.uk/apply-growth-vouchers
Free information A good accountant should offer you advice and assistance with planning for your growth. They should also make you aware of where to get an abundance of free information and support including how to source funding through the Business Growth Hub - a not for profit organisation set up by local authorities specifically to help businesses to grow. One key area is Access to Finance,
which enables businesses to speak to an expert with up to 12 hours of time available, designed to help you find the most relevant source of funding for your business. Your contact will work with traditional lenders as well as looking at alternative funding options such as business angels or crowdfunding.
The importance of business planning Whether you decide to use the traditional funding methods or newer options for raising finance, it is still critically important to have a robust business plan – something your accountant should be able to help with. A strong business plan presents to any funding provider that your company is worth investing in, and should at a minimum include information broken down in to the following sections: • Executive summary • Business description including a brief history and details of your products and services • The team following the ‘who-what’ structure • Market strategies and competitor analysis • Financial factors

wellbeing
Does gratitude have a role in business? How many of us in business find that we’re stressed for much of the time, have little time for ourselves or on those rare breaks feel guilty or worried that we’re not out there earning money?
We may love what we do, enjoy working all hours but are aware of the unremitting pressure to make contacts, be high-profile, generate new business. Gratitude rarely features in our minds unless it’s to thank someone for a valuable lead or great new order. It can be important though to stop occasionally and ask if gratitude has a role in modern business? Many of us in business work so hard that when we do win an order or resolve a problem and feel that we’ve earned a good result, why should we be grateful for it? We deserve to reward ourselves. Also, it’s important not to underestimate the value of letting clients and customers see trophies and evidence of our success. The nice cars and comfortable premises can provide confidence and reassurance in their decision to use our company. Equally, those of us running small businesses, perhaps from our homes, with minimal overheads can gain much satisfaction from the choices and freedom of being our own bosses.
There’s a role for gratitude in each size of business
Gratitude is important as it grounds us, allows us to appreciate what we have and remind ourselves that many people also work long hours, sometimes in desperate circumstances, with little or hardly any reward. We may have sweat blood for that lucky break, may have made many sacrifices, but it’s important to be thankful too.

Alliances may be made which result in a more comprehensive menu being offered to potential customers. Networking introduces us to people we may never have met otherwise and provides opportunities to discuss business issues and concerns informally, be introduced to new ideas and meet people with whom we may work. Staff can be a major issue for many people in business; supporting a large overhead, being responsible for motivating and developing them, ensuring there’s enough work to
justify their salaries, helping them through personal ‘stuff’.
A good boss is interested in their staff, offers training, is generous with thanks and appreciation, trusts them and delegates well. But a good member of staff can reward your faith by freeing up time for you to develop the business, they may discover new and better ways of doing things, give you a break. Being successful enough to employ staff can be a headache, but it’s also something to be thankful for. Family and friends are important when you’re in business. They may be an annoying distraction at times, having to consider them and their needs. But being made to stop work because you’ve ‘agreed’ to attend a football match, parents’ evening or dinner date is a good way to be reminded of other important things in life, that possibly motivated you to start your business and continue working as hard. Also, It’s useful to receive a different perspective on your business, a caring person who has your interests at heart but perhaps sees things in another way.
