stablished in 2010 by one of Australia’s most successful information technology and internet entrepreneurs, Bevan Slattery. The company has grown significantly since its inception and currently operates data centre facilities in major cities such as Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Perth. Craig Scroggie took the role of Chief Executive Officer in 2012 when Slattery then became non-executive Deputy Chairman. In 2015, NEXTDC was named by Deloitte as Australia’s fastest growing technology company and today it continues to report record results as it continues to succeed.
DATA CENTRE AS A SERVICE (DCAAS) As Australia’s leading independent data centre operator with 9 data centres nationwide, NEXTDC prides itself on its custom-built facilities that puts its customers at the heart of its operations. The company has pioneered its DCaaS model that champions a combination of first-class colocation with its customer’s choice of connectivity services and realtime analytical management software. Offering national coverage with 300MW capacity and 100% uptime guaranteed, NEXTDC claims to be one of Australia’s most trusted data centre solution providers. Its 9 data centres are
located across Australia and hold more than 500 ICT providers in its ecosystem. Combining cutting edge technology and innovative engineering design, NEXTDC promises its data centres are built to weather any storm. The business is passionate about being the first choice for the world’s leading cloud platforms, the country’s leading carrier networks and ICT service providers. Its data centres are designed to achieve a minimum of Tier III standard and include Australia’s only network of Tier IV certified data centres. SUSTAINABLE FUTURE With climate change being a hot topic across the globe, it is the forwardthinking businesses that commit to improving its energy usage that really stand out. As with any responsible business, NEXTDC is dedicated to delivering sustainable initiatives. This is particularly evident when you look at the NABERS ratings at some of the company’s facilities. With its M1 data centre being the first Australian facility to receive a 5-star NABERS rating and its S1 centre in Sydney receiving 4.5 stars. A national rating system that measures the environmental performance of Australian buildings, NABERS measures energy efficiency, greenhouse gas intensity and the overall impact of a building on the environment. To top off the energy efficient credentials that NEXTDC is mounting up, the company was recently certified as carbon neutral under the Australian
Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS), administered by the Australian Federal Department of Environmental and Energy. NEXTDC CEO Craig Scroggie commented on the announcement “NEXTDC supports the science of climate change and we’re not afraid of using that conviction to show others how our business interests can help create a better future for all. We build and operate a national footprint
of Australia’s most energy efficient data centres which serves as a reminder that organisations can be engineered to both support the environment and improve business efficiencies. DATA CENTRE PROVIDER FOR QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT Reinforcing its capability as a firstclass data centre, NEXTDC recently announced in March 2019 that
its Brisbane based operation had been appointed by the Queensland Government as its new Enterprise provider on its ICT supplier panel. The appointment involves delivering data centre as a service (DCaaS) solutions to Queensland Government Departments and Agencies. The company states it is the only data centre provider in Brisbane that delivers globally-recognised data centre solutions certified to Uptime Tier
IV standards. NEXTDC announced it had been hand-picked for its industry leading facilities and ability to offer a 100% uptime guarantee. It revealed that Queensland Government Departments and Agencies will operate from a secure and highly reliable environment at its B1 CBD or B2 Fortitude Valley locations. FY19 HALF YEAR RESULTS In February 2019, NEXTDC released its half yearly results and declared it had been a bumper first half of the financial year, with a total of 10.1MW of new capacity contracted and the addition of more than 1,300 incremental interconnections. The company was delighted to report its revenue was up 17% to $90.8million, whilst its underlying EBITDA was also up 26% to $42.2million. Other noteworthy highlights included an increase of 25%
in customers, up to 1,090 and utilisation up 28% at 50.4MW. NEXTDC Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Craig Scroggie, commented on the 1H19 results: “The record results are testament to NEXTDC’s strong fundamentals reflecting the inherent operating leverage of the business. The first half also reflects a record period for new investments in both the development of our next generation of world class Tier IV data centres and our innovative connectivity service offerings.” Clearly data centres are big business and as almost every business globally relies on its IT services in one form or another, the industry is only going to increase in size and value. NEXTDC is a company that might be relatively young, at less than 10 years old, but certainly knows what its customers need and is delivering accordingly.
