A business built on integrity
W
oolworths is Australia’s largest supermarket chain. Operating 995 stores across Australia, Woolworths relies on the 115,000 team members in stores, distribution centres and support offices to provide our customers with superior service, range, value and convenience. The company prides itself on working closely with Australian growers and farmers to ensure the best products are available to customers. Sourcing 96% of all fresh fruit and vegetables and 100% of fresh meat from Australian farmers and growers. This makes Woolworths Australia’s Fresh Food People. As one of Australia’s most innovative retailers, Woolworths understands that consumers are looking for new, simple ways to shop. Consumers can shop from the comfort of their computer at home or on the train on their way home from work using the Woolworths Supermarket App and the best part is, their groceries can be delivered straight to the kitchen bench. SUSTAINABILITY By the end of the year, Woolworths own brand products will achieve net zero deforestation for our ‘high impact’ commodities such as palm oil, timber, pulp and paper, and packaging. This will be achieved by a combination of sourcing from independently certified sustainable supply chains, and where this option is not feasible using credible offsetting schemes.

Have you got a sweet tooth? Well, look no further than William Bartlett Pears. That’s what Jimmy Kalafatis says. And he should know. His family has been producing pears since 1960, when his father Angelo bought his first 15‐hectare orchard in Victoria’s Shepparton area in the Goulburn Valley, where pears have been produced for the past 100 years. Now Managing Director of Kalafatis Fresh Produce, Jimmy presides over 5000 acres producing pears all‐year round and his family business has been supplying Woolworths with pears for the past 50 years. Truly a unique pear, the William Bartlett pear is also synonymous with Woolworths’ reputation for quality fresh produce, because the William Barlett pear ripens very quickly once picked and must be savoured soon after purchase ‐ there’s no leaving it to sit around in a supermarket! “The thing that sets the William pear apart from the others is that it ripens very quickly and once it does it tastes so sweet, like honey.” Jimmy says, “There’s no other pear that goes as sweet and that’s why it’s so popular”. Harvested in the middle of summer and the first new‐season pear to come in to stores, Jimmy says it’s his favourite type and has a simple, yet effective, way to enjoy them: pre‐cooled once ripened so it’s extra cold.

As a member of The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), a global industry network that brings together the CEOs of major global retailers and consumer brand owners, Woolworths is a signatory to the CGF Board resolution to achieve zero net deforestation through the consumer goods supply chain by the end of 2020 through sourcing commodities like palm oil, paper and board in a sustainable fashion. Residents of Burwood in east Melbourne are the first in Australia to experience Woolworths’ most sustainable supermarket after the official opening of the Woolworths Burwood Brickworks store, in December.
MANAGING DIRECTOR CLAIRE PETERS: “We recognise our responsibility to minimise our environmental footprint and are committed to playing our part in creating a greener, more sustainable future. Woolworths Burwood Brickworks incorporates a range of sustainability initiatives that aim to reduce the environmental impact of the store’s operations and help customers live more sustainably too.”
The new store will operate using 100% renewable energy which is equivalent to taking 700 cars off the road each year. MELBOURNE FRESH DISTRIBUTION CENTRE Last August, Woolworths and Vaughan Constructions commenced building works on the supermarket’s new Melbourne Fresh Distribution Centre (MFDC) in Truganina. The multi-million state-of-the-art facility, which will store and deliver fresh produce and chilled products to hundreds of Victorian supermarkets, will create 200 jobs during construction and 300 permanent new jobs when it opens KIHO557 Ritchies NPD Ad Press.pdf

later this year. The MFDC will be co-located with Woolworths’ meat supplier Hilton Meats’ production facility, and replace the current operations at the Mulgrave Produce DC. Co-location with Hilton and closer proximity to more fresh food suppliers will take up to 600 trucks off the West Gate Bridge each week and a further 3,000 truck movements off Melbourne roads each year. Woolworths Chief Supply Chain Officer Paul Graham said: “This development will help us deliver top quality fruit and vegetables to our customers fresher, faster and more efficiently than ever

before. “At one-and-a-half times the size of the MCG field, the distribution centre will provide a significant uplift in capacity to support our continued growth in Victoria. “We’re proud to be investing in a best-in-class supply chain network in Victoria - delivering fresher food to our customers, taking trucks off Melbourne’s roads, and creating hundreds of new jobs.” At full capacity more than one and a half million cartons a week will move through MFDC bringing customers fresh fruit and vegetables and chilled goods from more than 500 suppliers.
The $135m investment on the MFDC is majority funded by landowner Charter Hall, with Woolworths signing an initial 15-year lease on the site. This builds on an extensive national relationship between Woolworths and Charter Hall across both industrial and retail properties. The commissioning of the MFDC will take around 600 truck movements off the West Gate each week as Truganina is located closer to more Woolworths suppliers than Mulgrave. Co-location with Hilton Meats will take a further 3,000 truck movements off Melbourne roads each year as it eliminates shuttle runs between
