Netherlands Waste Management Partnership Teamwork in the waste chain

Teamwork in the waste chain The Netherlands is an acknowledged world leader in waste management. Its own waste chain is particularly well organized. The Netherlands has much to offer international partners, from expertise in legislation to technology which recovers valuable resources for re use. The Netherlands Waste Management Partnership promotes the export of Dutch knowledge through close cooperation between all actors in the waste management chain.

These 16 million people are only 0.267 percent of the world’s population, and yet the Netherlands is still the world’s eighth largest exporting country. The Netherlands Waste Management

The strengths of NWMP:

Partnership , or NWMP, was founded as a non profit

organization in November 2008. It is a public private partnership in which all links in the waste management chain are represented.

The objective of NWMP is to promote cooperation

between companies, and between the private and public sector, with a view to jointly profiling Dutch waste management and related expertise on the international market. Alongside the export opportunities, we believe that our cooperation will result in environmental benefits and will promote sustainability. In short, NWMP seeks ongoing cooperation between the public and private sectors in order to exploit international opportunities for Dutch businesses active in the waste chain, and to contribute to a sustainable society.

Close cooperation between public and private sectors Single point of contact for all international partners ‘One stop shop’ for embassies and consulates of the Kingdom of the Netherlands All links in the waste chain are represented Integrated solutions: legislation, enforcement and practical aspects Focus on high potential markets Extensive market information and export channels Joint export delegations and trade fair visits Local knowledge and networks.

Stronger in partnership

Dutch companies have much to offer in the field of waste management. Energy and raw materials are becoming ever more expensive, whereupon demand for alternative fuels and effective recycling methods is growing. Moreover, mankind is coming to realize that we can no longer plunder the planet’s resources without facing the consequences. This explains the emergence of an international market for waste management technology and sustainable development solutions. Before any country can successfully introduce waste management technology, a number of preconditions must be met.

There are also programmes which will help local and regional government authorities to implement that legislation, with specialist consultants on hand to help develop practical solutions. Waste processing experts can assist in implementing the necessary technical and logistic infrastructure, and can train local staff to perform their work to the highest level. Suppliers of technical equipment can provide environmentally responsible solutions, working in association with the consultants if required. Each member of the partnership therefore has the opportunity to turn their knowledge and expertise into a valuable export product, while remembering that doing so requires the input of all other members.

They include:

support and awareness on the part of both government and the public appropriate legislation which can be implemented and enforced at both national and local level a suitable infrastructure sufficient financial resources.

Clearly, not all countries will be able to meet these conditions overnight. In fact, even the Netherlands took many years to arrive at the current situation. There are many countries which aspire to reach a comparable level within a relatively short timeframe. They regard the Netherlands as a role model and wish to follow the ‘learning curve’ that we have followed for the past thirty years – but to do so much more quickly. There is no one Dutch company or government department that can meet this complex challenge alone, although international clients generally prefer to do business with a ‘single point of contact’. NWMP is that point of contact. Through cooperation between the public and private sectors, we are able to promote Dutch expertise at all levels. For international partners, NWMP represents ‘one stop shopping’ for all waste management solutions.

The Netherlands is a world leader when it comes to waste management

Due to the geographical and morphological conditions the Netherlands, ever since the 80s, landfilling has been strongly regulated to prevent soil pollution, groundwater pollution and methangasemission Separate collection of municipal waste has a long history which is supported by collection and transport vehicles and containers, produced in the Netherlands Sorting and separation of different waste streams (C&D waste, commercial waste) has a long history due to the high landfill taxes Since composting/digestion of separate collected organics became compulsory in the early 90s, the Netherlands is amongst the best performing countries.

The NWMP hosts three types of members

Suppliers of equipment in waste management • Separation / sorting • Composting / digestion • Containers / collection vehicles • Land filling • ICT • Consultancy

Helping to shape a sustainable world

Through NWMP, the Dutch government is not only investing in the national economy but is helping to create a sustainable world. While everyone seeks ‘Cradle to Cradle’ (C2C) solutions, NWMP will actively help other countries to implement the most basic and important C2C principle: full recycling and re use of valuable resources. Successful export of knowledge and expertise

Given its complexity and scale, the international demand for solutions calls for a considerable body of knowledge and expertise in various disciplines. The Netherlands Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM) is willing to assist foreign governments in formulating the legislation required for an effective system of waste management.

Waste management Operators Apart from supplying equipment and consultancy, the NWMP hosts operators of waste facilities with international interest and ambition, who like to share their knowledge and look for investment opportunities. Service providers Producers responsibility for many products like End of life vehicles, Waste of electric and electronic equipment, batteries and accumulators, car tyres etc. has been introduced in the 90 ‘s and has been the model for the EU regulations. The NWMP hosts service providers of producers responsibility for these waste streams: ARN (Car Recycling Netherlands), NVMP (Netherlands Association for Metalelectrical appliances).

Offering Cooperation around the Globe The NWMP is a public-private partnership between the entire waste management chain and the Dutch government. The Dutch government is represented by NL Agency, the department of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs that implements government policy for sustainability, innovation, and international business and cooperation. It is the contact point for businesses, (knowledge) institutions and government bodies for information and advice, financing, networking and regulatory matters. The board of NWMP consists of representatives of member companies, NL Agency and the sector association of suppliers of environmental technologies.

The NWMP is open for all parties (either private or public) that have an interest in waste management: a) policies b) waste management technology c) cooperation and / or networking activities with our members We can provide you with the following information: • • •

Legislation and governmental policies with regard to waste (management); Technical expertise and innovative solutions throughout the waste chain; Information about the country-specific programmes run by the NWMP (i.e. Turkey, Poland, Canada)
