INTERVIEW
If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
Who has been your biggest mentor? What was the most valuable lesson you learned from him/her?
I have learnt how critical it is to seek out people and environments where one can learn, grow, test your ideas and assumptions, be challenged in positive ways and be supported to maximise your skills and talents. I would likely do that earlier and better – using what I have learnt over time. However, I prefer to look forward.
I do not have one ‘biggest mentor’. However, I am tremendously grateful for my family – both blood and chosen, my professional advisors and mentors, and myself. I could not do what I do without my community. I also learn from myself –my needs, my thoughts and emotions. My skills in adapting and being resilient learnt through change and failure.
What are your biggest achievements till date? Most recently, I was selected for the Next Einstein Fellowship, by the Next Einstein forum, an offshoot of the African Institute of Mathematical Scientists. I would also consider my current work so far a success while I aim to keep making greater impacts. Tell us about your day-to-day activities as a researcher My typical day involves first of all reviewing my plan for that day, which I typically create on the Friday of the previous week. I decide if there are things that need to be revised. I respond to urgent requests from collaborators. I then get to work – usually working on research protocols, collecting or analysing or writing up data, attending and coordinating meetings with collaborators. I also take breaks to walk, eat, drink water, get some sunshine. I enjoy listening to music or a podcast while I am working. To what do you attribute your success? I attribute my success to my intelligence, my imaginativeness, my hard work, and also to my community – my family, my mentors, minds I have never met but whose ideas, writings and words have inspired me –, peers who sharpen my mind, and to those scientists, thinkers, advocates amongst others, who did ground-breaking works that I build upon through my work.

In your opinion, what ways do you think Africa is lacking in public health and what must we do right? We must design with the health and wellbeing of our people in mind. We must think of how to prevent people from dying instead of resigning to fate. Imagine an Africa where people – and not only the rich - live in communities with clean, well maintained roads complete with side-walks, bike lanes, and pedestrian signs.
ground you and help you create ideas that are actually appropriate. It is a beautiful, sometimes complex, sometimes confusing, but ultimately fulfilling path. It is a path where you can really make an impact.
We need to start developing “glocal” economies – where people have what they need right in their neighbourhoods and drawing from sustainable local economies built on clean energy sources.
Imagine where people live in high quality, clean and safe housing. Imagine where our communities have parks and libraries and economies that can sustain the population while also being good for the environment. Imagine when less people have to go into poverty to pay for medical treatment because their communities are conducive for their wellbeing and they have access to care, to spot, and treat risks for illness on time. Imagine a government that listens and puts all people – rich or poor,– first. What advice do you have young upcoming public health practitioners? I would advise them to keep at it. It takes a while to find one's way, find the resources one needs, and to have a good idea of how to shape one's work and contribution to society. You never arrive. Be open to the process of exploration. Connect with communities and people you see doing similar things to you and people who will challenge you to grow and sharpen your ideas. Use the internet to stay abreast of opportunities, resources, research and developments. Pay attention to your community and to people's experiences around – you are working for the public after all, and it is that public that will

Meaningful business relationships are the lifeblood of an organisation. Relationship building does not happen in a vacuum.
