SiGMA´s biggest event yet: 27,000 turn out for SiGMA Europe 2024

Despite weather channels predicting a week of gloom for SiGMA Europe 2024, the sun came out just as doors opened, welcoming 27,000 delegates to the Mediterranean Maritime Hub. We couldn’t have planned it better ourselves.

Held on the eve of our 10 year anniversary celebrations, SiGMA´s Malta Week summit is undoubtedly our biggest yet and is the result of significant investment into the quality of the event – transforming 45,000 square metres into a hub of exhibition, conference, and networking in just three weeks. Warmed by the late autumn sun, outdoor spaces were transformed, with big brand booths such as Pin Up Global, Riddick, Melbet Partners, Barbara Bang, and Pragmatic Pay adding to the unique festival vibe.

The expo floor has seen a sizable increase to its footprint due to an unprecedented amount of new exhibitors clamouring for a spot. To cater for this we introduced a fourth shed, which offered an additional 15,000 sqm of much needed space to the venue, including new networking areas, a media lounge and meeting rooms.

Conferences: Exploring new frontiers in gaming

SiGMA Europe 2024 hosted a dynamic range of conferences covering critical topics, from the potential of e-sports to shape betting’s future to insights into the Brazilian regulatory landscape. Big industry names brought high value content to the stage, providing actionable strategies for navigating new markets and capitalising on emerging opportunities. Top speakers included Joe Pisano, founder and CEO of Jade Entertainment and Gaming Technologies, Uri Poliavich, founder and CEO of Soft2Bet, Alex Tomic, Founder of Alea, Vitali Matsukevich, COO at Softswiss, and Charles Mizzi, CEO of the MGA.

A series of highly attended workshops on the 11th offered an immersive learning experience ahead of the main event. The sessions were so popular that many attendees had to make do with standing room only. XGENIA, an AI-powered leader in game development, claimed victory in the SiGMA Europe Startup Pitch, while Silo Team, specialising in training and compliance, earned top honours as the AIBC Pitch winner.

The first day of Malta Week kicked off with a press conference for the official launch of the SiGMA Poker Tour. Operations Manager, Ivonne Montealgre, announced the launch of two official tour locations for 2025 – Brazil and Malta. The firstever edition of the Hendon Mob Latam Championships (THMC Latam) will take place during the Brazil leg of the tour.

The first of two award ceremonies saw a spectacular turnout, welcoming just under 700 individuals from prestigious gaming and tech companies, with the gala evening also serving to officially kick off celebrations for our 10th anniversary. The night also acted as the perfect launchpad for a special announcement introducing our new destinations and dates for 2025: SiGMA Central Europe runs from the 23rd to 26th November in Milan and SiGMA Euro-Med, rebranding from SiGMA East Europe, moves to a September slot at the MMH in Malta.

“Today we feel there is no SiGMA without the SiGMA Foundation,” remarked SiGMA Group founder Eman Pulis when thanking H.E the President of Malta following the on stage presentation of a donation to the MCCF on behalf of SiGMA. Since its launch in 2021, the SiGMA Foundation has gone from strength to strength, bringing its philanthropy to a number of global projects. Between 2023 and 2024, SiGMA raised just under a million Euros through its charity auctions. At this year’s B2B

charitable auction, the highest bid item, “Bronze Lady” by Tommy Zegan, sold for €65,000 to SoftConstruct, a leading technology provider redefining the iGaming experience. The B2C auction, powered by VBET, saw “Ace Beyond Limits” by Veronika Bjurfjäll sell for €12,000 to Highbet, an established online sportsbook and casino operator.

Visits from government officials, sporting and diplomatic ambassadors

H.E the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, the Hon Robert Abela, Prime Minister of Malta, Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Hon. Silvio Schembri, government officials and international ambassadors, including a delegation from Ghana received an official tour on the second day of the event.

In her keynote, the President of Malta lauded SiGMA’s commitment to philanthropy and its global impact, stating, “SiGMA exemplifies Malta’s leadership in the gaming sector and its dedication to meaningful progress.”

Meanwhile, football legend Ronaldinho caused a stir, making an appearance as an ambassador for Betify, while Boomerang was represented by AC Milan icons Massimo Ambrosini and Serginho, who also made their presence felt at the company’s booth. UFC champ Alex Pereira attended as a representative for Spribe.

Sporting competitions, poker tournaments and an MMA fight night

The event kicked off with exhilarating sports activities, including a fun run, golf and poker tournament, football match, and a boat cruise, creating an exciting atmosphere for participants to bond while promoting health and wellness. Cristina also highlighted the internationality of the technology team, which fosters an environment of kindness and challenge with respect.

Despite Cristina’s focus on creativity, she also highlighted the importance of utilising data to drive improvements.

Partnerships Optimise Security

Casumo, which holds licences in Matla, the UK, Sweden, and Spain, offers gamers distinctive and innovative online casino experiences, as well as sports betting.

With this in mind, it is crucial that the business implements banking standards to ensure security for its customers. To support this, in 2023 Casumo migrated its platform to Google Cloud, in a move which Cristina described as a “game changer”.

“Our relationship with Google Cloud and their sales partner in Malta, AmagisTech, has been a true partnership, with their team offering a lot of support and training to ensure a smooth transition and enabling us to build a more robust platform,” she said.

Casumo has developed a rigorous protocol to ensure Casumo gamers can enjoy i-gaming safely and securely.

The business has implemented advanced encryption to ensure data protection, as

well as a complete and transparent audit trail for all transactions.

Partnerships, such as its one with Google Cloud, are crucial for Casumo’s growth, with Cristina commenting that these relationships help to “build trust and leverage” with customers.

Additionally, it supports the business in enhancing and expanding, on its mission to become an entertainment platform and not simply a gambling platform.

“It’s incredibly important to us that we encourage our users to play for entertainment and not to encourage unhealthy gambling habits,” said Cristina.

“We have been transforming both internally and externally in order to better our user experience,” explained Cristina.

I was fortunate to host events around the world, creating memorable experiences for our VIPs.” Over time, Steve transitioned from VIP management to player retention, expanding his focus to the broader customer base.

“Moving from a niche segment to managing retention strategies for the entire player base was a fascinating challenge,” he said. “It required adapting strategies to different segments, but with the help of a great team, it was a rewarding experience.”

Now, as Director of Gaming Revenue, Steve focuses on commercial growth, working closely with third-party providers to drive success.

“It’s a different section of the business, but just as interesting,” he said. “Collaboration and innovation remain at the heart of everything we do.”

Rather than focusing solely on improving the average player session, the Platform team aims to enhance even the worst 1% percentile of player experiences. "We strive to ensure that even in the worst-case scenarios, the impact on gameplay is minimal. Every player deserves a top-notch experience," Mylotskyi emphasized.

Game Production Domain: Seeking to eliminate "losses in translation" between the artists’ vision and the final product, the team is developing tools that enable art to integrate seamlessly with technology. "Our goal is to empower our artists with the tools they need to create without constant engineering support," Mylotskyi added. This way the artist’s vision is fully realized without compromise, enhancing the gaming experience and providing players with the utmost joy.

multiplayer experience. "We focus on scaling our promotional features rapidly and effectively. Real-time streaming of player progress and achievements makes the gaming experience more engaging and competitive."

Challenges of Scalability in iGaming

The iGaming industry faces significant challenges when it comes to scalability. Mylotskyi explained that many operators manage scalability semi-manually, preparing for expected traffic spikes but often struggling to handle sudden increases in demand.

"This can lead to performance issues during peak times, ultimately impacting the player experience. We need to be proactive,"

To address these challenges, Playson is focused on designing scalable SaaS solutions like xPlatform that can effortlessly process thousands of transactions per second.

"Our architecture supports multi-region setups and handles traffic fluctuations without breaking a sweat, as we are talking about such a number as 200 million transactions daily," Mylotskyi added.

Adopting a micro-service architecture allows to provide operators and players with the seamless scaling they expect, and top-notch availability.

Improvements in scalability, faster load times, and higher reliability are essential for driving growth in the iGaming market. Mylotskyi draws a parallel to streaming services, where slow load times or service interruptions can lead to user attrition.

"In iGaming, if your platform can’t handle traffic efficiently, players will simply leave and never return. Because the competition is very high, we can’t afford to be slow or unavailable."

Faster spin time contributes to a smoother player experience, increasing engagement and session times. Mylotskyi emphasises that even a few milliseconds of delay can make a difference in player retention.

"If we can maintain average spin times of 150 milliseconds, we can keep players engaged longer, which ultimately boosts revenue for operators," Reliability is another crucial factor. Downtime or server issues can lead to frustration and a loss of trust among players. "A platform that offers near-perfect reliability creates a secure environment for players, enhancing satisfaction and driving growth in a competitive landscape," said Mylotskyi.

Reducing Latency and Load Times

In the pursuit of real-time gaming experiences, reducing latency and load times is paramount. Mylotskyi highlights that players expect instant outcomes, whether they are engaged in a live casino game or a fast-paced slot session.

Additionally, optimising game assets and utilising distributed Content Delivery Networks (CDN) can significantly improve load times, ensuring that players can quickly access their favourite games.

Achieving near-perfect reliability in iGaming is a complex challenge. Mylotskyi identifies several key obstacles, including infrastructure vulnerabilities like server failures, network outages, and unexpected traffic spikes.

"We need to invest in redundant systems and failover protocols to ensure continuous uptime, even during peak usage periods. It is a complex endeavour of handling petabytes of analytical data in storage that are processed on dozens of servers," he stated.

Playson, for example, addresses these challenges by utilising a crossregional SaaS platform that is carefully tuned to scale efficiently during traffic spikes.

"By employing regional canary deployment strategies, we can minimise downtime and maintain service continuity for tens of thousands of users simultaneously playing on the platform around the world," Mylotskyi added.

What is Mynt and how does it improve Greentube’s operations?

AAs a global iGaming provider since 2000, we rely heavily on tech and our remote gaming server (RGS) is our main vehicle to deliver our products to our operator partners. To ensure we stay ahead of the game, we realised there was a need to upgrade our tech stack and that’s how Mynt was born. We have worked hard to develop this new state-of-the-art RGS for producing and supplying games and the result is a more streamlined experience for both operators and players.

The platform has been designed with a wide range of next-level engagement

By offering a true revolution in technology and gamification, Greentube is set to make further inroads into regulated markets worldwide as it aims to further accelerate its growth plan.

QMynt is now live in a few markets, what has the initial feedback been and where will we see it launch next?

AWe have rolled out the platform in several markets now, and we used it to make our debut in South Africa. As the platform is both cloud and on-premise ready we can serve both remote markets and those that require a local setup. This will ensure we can tackle any new market opening and our strategy going forward is to use Mynt and not the old tech stack. So far, the feedback has been as expected, and we will work closely with partners to make any improvements required to further improve the product.

One advantage of the platform is that we will be able to use it to bring new exclusive studios and games to the market. This is another important proposition for us as a content supplier as this helps operators stand out from the crowd and attract players to their online casinos.

LatAm is the next big opportunity for the industry and there we are preparing to use the aggregation platform of our Italian subsidiary Capecod to combine games from Mynt, our old stack, and proprietary titles from Capecod to serve markets with the biggest possible collection of group content.

AThe biggest change is that the tech is becoming more and more advanced, offering full-service solutions including engagement and retention tools, compliance support and marketing. This ‘one-stop shop’ is something we need to be able to offer to be the supplier of choice for operators.

The most important thing for a platform is to fully understand the development journey and ensure that the creative ideas of a studio can rapidly become an exciting game that is put in front of the players without much hassle.
