Dr Nathalie Weidhase, Lecturer in Media and Communication at the University of Surrey, on the reputational benefits of the coronation.
"Amidst ongoing family tensions that regularly take over media headlines, and dipping approval ratings of the monarchy, the upcoming coronation may seem like a great opportunity to improve the image of the Royal Family. Big royal events such as weddings, births, and of course coronations are commonly used to improve not just the image of the monarchy, but that of the nation itself, and used to
communicate ideas of national identity and unity.
"However, while undoubtedly a historically significant event, the reputational benefits of the upcoming coronation remain to be seen. Taking place during increased protests at royal appearances and aforementioned comparatively low approval ratings, the recent invitation to the public to swear allegiance to the King has alienated even some of the most fervent royal supporters. P
erhaps most significantly, the display of incredible wealth at the coronation and the cost of the coronation itself may also be considered misplaced when the rest of the country is still going through a significant cost of living crisis."

SOME OF THE MOST EXTRAVAGANT ITEMS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY’S JEWELLERY COLLECTION
With the King’s Coronation this past month, many Brits were eager to see the abundance of lavish jewellery on show at the ceremony.
Customised jewellery experts at Glamira have highlighted some of the Royal Family’s most extravagant pieces, from the extraordinary Nizam of Hyderabad necklace to the dazzling ‘Granny’s Chips’ Brooch.
‘Granny’s Chips’ Brooch
Considered to be the most valuable brooch in the world, the ‘Granny’s Chips’ brooch was handed down from Queen Mary to Queen Elizabeth II as she prepared to become queen, which is where the unusual name derives from. Estimated to be worth more than £50 million, the brooch consists of two diamonds, the pearcut Cullinan III weighing 94.4 carats and the cushionshaped Cullinan IV with a weight of 63.6 carats.

KING CHARLES III CORONATION - 6TH MAY 2023
St. Edward’s Crown
The nation will see King Charles don the St. Edward’s Crown this weekend, an item that is only ever worn during a Coronation to crown a new king or queen – making it a particularly special piece in the Royal collection. The crown consists of a gold frame set with an incredible total of 444 jewels, including sapphires, rubies, and topazes – overall, the item is estimated to be worth around £45 million.
Picture: Wikipedia Commons
Queen Mary’s Bandeau Tiara
Made in 1932 for Queen Mary, the bandeau tiara was designed to fit the centre brooch which was given to her in 1893. The brooch is detachable and consists of ten brilliant diamonds, while the tiara holds eleven sections of interlaced ovals and pavé diamonds. After being passed on to Queen Elizabeth II, it was loaned to the Duchess of Sussex for her wedding. However, this was not her first choice; she originally hoped to wear the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara but was denied by the Queen.
Kate Middleton’s Engagement Ring
The Princess of Wales’s engagement ring boasts a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds and is set in 18-karat white gold. The ring which once belonged to the late Princess Diana, is said to have been inspired by a sapphire and diamond brooch gifted to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert, which is now a crown heirloom. Kate Middleton’s engagement ring is valued at around £400,000, making it the most expensive engagement ring within the British Royal Family.
The Coronation Necklace
The coronation necklace dates way back to 1858 when it was made by Garrard, who was then the Crown Jeweller, and presented to Queen Victoria. It was worn by several queens during their coronations following this, including the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The platinum, gold, and silver necklace features 25 graduated brilliant cut diamonds, as well as the 22.48 carat pendant known as the Lahore Diamond.

The Greville Festoon Necklace
Worth approximately £8 million, the Greville Festoon necklace made by Cartier features five-rows of diamonds and was left to Camilla by the Queen Mother. The necklace started off with two rows in 1929, but was altered in 1938 by Mrs. Greville, the original owner, to make it five rows of diamond set in platinum weighing at around 250 to 300 carats. This incredible piece is considered to be Camilla’s most valuable item of jewellery. Pictures:
The Swan Lake Necklace
Worn by Princess Diana at a performance of Swan Lake at Royal Albert Hall in London, her last official event before her passing, the Swan Lake necklace has been auctioned several times over the years and was last on sale in 2017 for £10 million. The piece consists of five South Sea pearls and a staggering 187 diamonds, with 164 of these weighing 42.35 carats.
The Nizam of Hyderabad Necklace
Five years prior to Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne, this necklace was given to her by the Nizam of Hyderabad as a wedding gift. It includes more than 50 emerald and pearshaped diamonds worth over 2,000 carats and also features detachable rose brooches. Made by Cartier, the necklace is worth around £66 million, making it the most valuable item of jewellery owned by any Royal Family.

By swapping its traditional deadline and lifeline figures for a virtual “hotline” offering support for those experiencing climate anxiety, the Climate Clock hopes to highlight the importance of mental health and provide resources to those who need them.
“Eco-anxiety among young people is at epidemic proportions. To help us take care of ourselves and each other, we are turning the Climate Clock into a Climate Mental Health Hotline for the month of May. But to really address the growing mental health crisis amongst our youth, leaders must take the Climate Emergency seriously, and #ActInTime.” said Andrew Boyd, co-creator of Climate Clock
“The best remedy for climate anxiety is climate action. The greatest cause of climate anxiety is not confronting climate truth, but the lack of action on that truth. It is not those highlighting our shrinking window for taking decisive action who are triggering so much anguish among our population, especially young people; it is those who deny the facts, delay action and distract us from pursuing the solutions we need. ” said Gan Golan, co-creator of Climate Clock.
The new virtual hotline will provide links to support resources such as helplines,

the compounding systemic mental health issues faced by communities bearing the brunt of the climate crisis.
“I applaud the Climate Clock for creating a virtual hotline so our families, friends, and neighbors can access resources to feel empowered to tackle the climate crisis. Environmental justice communities continue to bear the brunt of climate disasters that take a lasting toll on their mental health. We need to invest big into mental health resources that are affordable and accessible and empower communities to build resilience to climate change’s catastrophic impacts. That is why I am proud to introduce the Community Mental Wellness and Resilience Act with Representatives Tonko and Fitzpatrick. I will continue to fight for large, comprehensive funding in mental health care that uplifts individuals and families who are on the frontlines of climate disasters.” said US Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts.

“The increasing number and severity of natural disasters and toxic stresses cost our communities dearly, taking lives and livelihoods—and the trauma felt from these disasters runs even further. Studies show that these impactful events can traumatize upwards of 40 percent of those who live in the affected area. That’s why I’m partnering with my colleagues to lead the way on this resilience building legislation that will help address our nation’s mental health crisis through grants and partnerships with local, community-based initiatives. I’ll continue to work to deliver science-based, evidence-informed solutions that benefit communities across our nation and offer a holistic response to the climate crisis.” said Congressman Paul D. Tonko of New York.
“The evidence shows that the climate crisis is hurting young people’s mental health worldwide. Many climate anxious youth experience moral injury from living in a system where power holders are not doing what the science says must be done to protect the future habitability of the planet. It isn’t that young people are so upset because the environment “is not doing well”, it’s that they feel betrayed by leaders on this issue, which makes their suffering worse. The good news is that courageous climate action can change that, and if we want today’s youth to enjoy a well functioning society when they’re older, it must.” Dr. Britt Wray, Lead of the Special Initiative on Climate Change and Mental Health, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford Medicine, and author of Generation Dread.

WORLD PASSWORD DAY: CYBERSECURITY EXPERT EXPLAINS HOW PASSWORD STORAGE HELPS YOUR ONLINE SECURITY
Did you know that the first Thursday of May is World Password Day?
The day is designed to foster good password habits that help to better our online security. One way to do that both safely and easily is by using a password manager. With that in mind, cybersecurity experts VPNOverview.com have revealed exactly how password managers can help and how to find ones that are trustworthy to use.
How Password Storage Helps Your Online Security
Emails, Google, web shops, social media –you name it. The likeliness is that you have countless accounts on several different websites and platforms. For almost every account you create, you have to think of a password that will allow you to access any secured data without being hacked easily. This means that you will have countless of passwords to remember – unless you use a password manager.
Password managers – for example, Blur or 1Password – allow you to store all of your passwords safely in their ‘password vaults’. From the moment you have installed one, you are only required to remember your master password, which will give you access to every single password you have saved within.
That means you do not have to write passwords down on a piece of paper that could be stolen or keep a word document with sensitive information that could fall into the wrong hands. Your password manager ultimately has you covered with one simple app.
The Advantages of Using a Password Manager
Password managers help you to remember all of the passwords you use online, but there are some additional advantages to using them. In fact, password managing apps help you to make your system far safer and more efficient. Here’s why:
• Password managers encrypt your passwords so no one but you has access to them.
• They save you time as you can log into your accounts automatically or with just one click.
They create unique and strong passwords for all of you accounts, so none of them are easy to guess.
They work on different devices, meaning you can log into your accounts on both your computer and smartphone with minimal effort.
16 Issue 114 · Business Enquirer Magazine
Are All Password Managers Safe?
Anyone who spends a lot of time online should install a password manager, so it can keep track of all your passwords and sensitive information.
However, not all password managers are 100% safe. As you will be giving the password manager access to all your passwords, it is important to choose one you can trust. Some self-proclaimed ‘password managers’ misuse that trust to gather your personal information and use it against you. Similarly, other password managers are simply not secure enough and could be compromised - even
thoughtheymayhavebetterintentions. Ultimately,iftheyareincapableofkeeping yourinformationsafe,youshouldnotrisk usingthem.

PIP INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATES ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY
May 2023 sees Protein Isolate Plant (PIP) International celebrating its first full year in business, and PIP has come a long way in just one year.
In less than 12 months, PIP International has received $7 million in purchase orders as they transformed from a PowerPoint presentation into a fully commissioned $30 million pilot facility. Processing over 5,000 metric tons of yellow peas annually, PIP will initially produce approximately 1,000 metric tons of their great tasting Ultimate Pea Protein called UP.P™.
Located in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, PIP’s pilot pea-processing and testing facility can be found in a converted craft brewery. Here, PIP’s patented Ultimate Pea Protein, UP.P™, is extracted using a targeted reaction that quickly and gently extracts proteins, keeping their functional properties intact.
“We like to say that we’ve cracked the code with our pea protein and created something the world needs and at a price that is favorable to food manufacturers,” explains Christine Lewington, PIP’s CEO. “By pairing the great taste of our protein with an affordability advantage, we are on the leading edge and poised to revolutionize the plant-based food industry with what many are calling a 3rd generation, yellow pea protein isolate.”
To date the Lethbridge, Alberta, plant has seen support from the Alberta and Canadian governments, has attracted the
attention of foreign governments, and has dozens of private food manufacturers now entered into or negotiating contracts to use PIP’s novel pea protein.
“Our team has focussed our full attention on the development and design of the most innovated and sustainable agri-processing facility the industry has every seen,” states Lewington.
Heavy construction on PIP’s larger facility is set to start this year and will be located on 20 acres inside the city of Lethbridge. It’s expected the new facility will process approximately 126,000 tonnes of yellow peas annually, and

support over $110 million per year in pea contracts for local and regional farmers.
The new $150 million processing facility is also expected to create 100 new jobs by early 2024. It will be the highest capacity plant of any pea processing facility in the world, all while offering a premium protein without the premium price. “Innovations have allowed us to reduce processing time, save significant energy costs, and produce a plant protein with flexible attributes thanks to new technologies. The result is a premium product without a premium price,” Lewington explains.
All of this means that PIP is receiving unprecedented results compared to anything developed in the plant-protein based market and is set to impact the supply of proteins globally. Consumers will soon have more great tasting, enjoyable options for their plant-base protein alternatives thanks to PIP.
“We’ve come a long way in a year,” Lewington says. “Thank you to everyone who has supported us, and we can’t wait to see what this next year holds!”

KEITH BARR, GROUP CEO TO STEP DOWN AND TO BE SUCCEEDED BY ELIE MAALOUF, AMERICAS CEO
InterContinental Hotels Group (“IHG”) [LON:IHG, NYSE:IHG (ADRs)] today announces that Keith Barr has informed the Board of his decision to step down from his role as Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and from the IHG Board. Keith intends to return with his family to the US. His final day as CEO will be 30 June, after which he will remain available to support and advise the business until the end of 2023.
Keith will be succeeded by Elie Maalouf, a member of IHG’s Board and Executive Committee, who has led IHG’s Americas business as regional CEO for the past eight years. Elie will take up his new position on 1 July and will be based in the UK to lead the business.
Keith has been a part of IHG for more than 30 years and was appointed to the Board and as CEO in July 2017. Executing a clear strategy, he has transformed IHG to position the company for long-term sustainable growth, surpassing 6,000 open hotels, broadening the portfolio with the addition of seven brands in six years, significantly investing in IHG’s digital capabilities and loyalty offer, embarking on a 10-year responsible business strategy, and progressing in key areas of DE&I. During Keith’s tenure, IHG has also successfully navigated a global pandemic and continued to grow its footprint and reputation with key stakeholders around the world.
22 Issue 114 · Business Enquirer Magazine PARTNER UPDATES
Keith Barr, Group CEO
Elie joined IHG as Americas CEO in February 2015. Under his leadership, the region’s estate has grown from approximately 3,700 hotels to more than 4,350. Elie led the delivery of record profits, oversaw the launch of new brands and formats, and strengthened how the business drives value for our hotel owners. Elie has spent several decades in the global hospitality sector and has a breadth of experience spanning hotel development, branding, finance, real estate and operations management, as well as food and beverage expertise, with a strong track record of delivering exceptional results. Elie has lived and worked internationally including in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the US, and speaks four languages.
To support Elie and Chief Financial Officer Michael Glover and to help ensure a smooth transition, Keith will remain available to the business over the rest of 2023. A process is underway to appoint a successor to Elie as Americas CEO.
Deanna Oppenheimer, Chair of IHG, commented: “It has been a pleasure to work with Keith, and on behalf of the Board and our colleagues I want to thank him for his successful leadership of IHG and congratulate him on his remarkable contribution. Starting in our hotels in the US before moving into corporate roles that have seen him work across international markets, Keith has used all his experience to lead a true transformation of IHG in his six years as CEO. He has rallied a business around a clear strategy with hotel owners and guests at its heart, strengthened IHG’s enterprise platform, and placed the business on a path to long-term sustainable growth and to continue an excellent track record of shareholder value creation. He has achieved this with great warmth and personality – not least during the depths of the pandemic – and we wish him the very best for the future.
Succession planning has been a hallmark of the business for many years and Elie’s appointment is the result of a rigorous process and a commitment to invest in the development of our leaders, as
was the case when Keith became CEO in 2017. Elie has been an instrumental part of our business in his eight years running our largest operating region and as a member of the Board since 2018. His significant industry experience and deep understanding of our business makes him extremely well placed to take on the role of CEO and ensure we continue to progress and execute against our successful strategy. The Board and I look forward to working with him in his new position.”
Keith Barr, CEO said: “I feel incredibly privileged to have spent three decades as part of IHG, working alongside the many talented colleagues that make it such a special company, and in partnership with our hotel owners who share our passion for hospitality. I have been lucky enough to experience this in multiple countries over the years and to have spent the last six as CEO has been an honour. After a long time living abroad, now is the right time for me and my family to return to the US. I am proud of the strong position that IHG is in today, thanks to the investments we have made to transform every aspect of our business, deliver for our guests and owners, and grow and operate our brands in the right way around the world. I’m excited for what lies ahead for IHG and having worked so closely together, to see Elie lead the business and build on all he has achieved in the Americas.”
Elie Maalouf, Americas CEO and CEO Designate said: “I am extremely proud to be appointed CEO of one of the world’s leading hotel companies and excited to work with our talented teams and owners around the world on what will be an important new chapter for IHG. Working closely with Keith and as an Executive Committee, we’ve made a number of critical strategic investments in recent years that position us with exciting opportunities to realise IHG’s full industry leading potential, by driving the performance and growth of our fantastic brands and delivering strong returns for all our stakeholders.”

SNPC PROJECT
DIRECTED BY: GLEN NEWTON ARTICLE
WRITTEN BY: LAURA WATLING
With the oil industry accounting for 60% of Congo’s revenue, the SNPC plays a vital role in the country’s economic development, which is seeing a slow but steady increase. By the end of 2023, the country’s GDP is expected to reach $57.47 billion, with a forecast of $94.05 billion by 2025.
As it celebrates its 25th anniversary, the national oil company, which has six subsidiaries throughout the oil industry chain (SONAREP, ILOGS, SFP, SNPC Trading, CORAF, and SNPC D) has outlined its vision for the future: Performance 2025.
Spearheaded by the SNPC’s General Director, Maxient Raoul Ominga, the program follows four key pillars: increase of revenues; reduction of costs; support of governmental action; and better governance and control of activities.
The business is also driven by a strong social and environmental vision, key to the oil company’s sustainable growth.

The SNPC (The Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo) is a beacon for Congo’s future, striving to implement innovation, sustainability and social responsibility to ensure continued growth of the country for its people.
Hydrogen: A Sustainable Investment Opportunity
To ensure both the future of the SNPC and the people of Congo, the oil company is embarking on a groundbreaking study to identify potential green energy resources sheltering in Congolese subsoil.
“The current strong global population growth requires the intensification of research into energy resources, which must however be in perfect harmony with the related recommendations in terms of sustainable development,” said Mr Ominga.
Among the energy resources which the SNPC has inventoried to date, hydrogen features prominently.
Within its research, the SNPC and its partners have highlighted favourable geological conditions for the genesis of natural hydrogen in the interior basin of the Congolese Cuvette.
From these observations, the SNPC has established natural hydrogen exploration permits for the Interior Basin of the Congolese Cuvette. In addition, at the end of 2022 the SNPC implemented a vast programme to install measurement sensors and geochemical sampling of natural hydrogen fumes.
With hydrogen considered a safe, clean, and affordable energy source, the business anticipates this will play a vital role within the Congolese energy transition.
Amongst the benefits to stakeholders it foresees:
Energy independence for Congo;
• Food self-sufficiency (due to the local integration of an ammonia and methanol fertilising chain);
Development of jobs and specialised training related to hydrogen production.

A Leading Vision
In addition to the hydrogen project, which has recently been nominated for the “Best Energy Project Award” at the Africa Investment Forum Awards 2023, the SNPC actively supports the government’s sustainability goals.
The SNPC has been working hard to establish its Environmental and Social Management plan, which will formalise its environmental policy, including monitoring mechanisms and gas flaring reduction procedures. In addition, it plans to conduct environmental impact assessments.
By 2025, the SNPC aims to allocate at least 5% of its budget to the development of low carbon and clean energy projects, and will also invest in a bio-centre to process hydrocarbon waste.
“My goal is to bring growth and modernisation to the company by introducing new technologies and processes that have increased efficiency and profits,” said Mr Ominga.

As a publicly owned business, the SNPC has established a significant role in the development of Congo via its SNPC Foundation.
The SNPC Foundation’s scope of action is large, but focuses on the positive impact it can have on the Congolese people.
Recent initiatives have seen the Foundation install boreholes in 21 rural villages to improve access to clean and safe drinking water. 11 of these boreholes are now operational, with a capacity of 5000 litres.
The SNPC Foundation has constructed two integrated health centres and a health complex, which provided vital support during the Covid-19 pandemic. The organisation has also built and developed key infrastructure for the education and training of local communities, including a high school and a technical trade centre, as well as distributing school kits to schools.
In addition, it has connected several rural villages to the E2C electricity network, providing valuable energy resources.
Performance 2025
Launched last year, in advance of the SNPC’s 25th anniversary, Performance 2025 is a clear vision for the company’s future. Through its four pillars the strategy aims to revitalise the business’ performance.
Included in these initiatives is the work outlined in its social vision, focussing on health, education and infrastructure within Congo. The business will also support governmental action in terms of the country’s supply and marketing of petroleum products.
The SNPC intends to increase its revenue by both optimising activities at its production sites whilst also acquiring and operating onshore gas resources which

Congorep-SNPC : a trust-based partnership
Founded thirty years ago, Perenco is an independent hydrocarbon producer that operates across the entire project life cycle, from exploration to decommissioning. Its gross production is 500,000 barrels of oil and gas per day.
The strength of the Group is the technical ingenuity and versatility of its employees, who bring safe and environmentally friendly solutions to oil and gas fields around the world. By enhancing and developing local resources, Perenco is proud to support economic growth and social development wherever it operates.
Perenco is based in the UK and operates in 14 partner countries. The Group’s uniqueness lies in its know-how: taking over, adapting, renovating and redeveloping existing assets in a sustainable manner. All this while guaranteeing the safety of people and the environment.
In 2001, Perenco arrived in the Republic of Congo and in partnership with SNPC created Congorep to operate the Emeraude field. 22 years later, thanks to the synergy of the teams, major investments and renovations, Emeraude is producing more, going from 1,850 bopd in 2005 to 10,000 bopd today.
Congorep became the operator of the Likouala field in 2010 with an initial rate of 5,600 bopd. Following the 2017 drilling campaign and the
installation of the LAF3 platform, production rebounded to a record high of nearly 30,000 bopd in 2019. In 2023, thanks to ongoing work and optimisations, production is maintained at around 17,000 bopd.
Since the beginning of its operations in Congo, Congorep has been a testament to the trusted partnership and operational success of the alliance between SNPC and Perenco.
At the same time, Perenco operates independently with Perenco Congo on the PNGF-Sud and Yombo-KLL operating permits. The beginning of 2023 was marked by the production launch on the Boatou permit. This undeveloped discovery, which targeted a difficult area, is already producing over 5,000 bopd.

With this project, Perenco Congo has demonstrated its ability to bring marginal fields into production in an innovative manner.
As a good corporate citizen, Perenco in Congo is also committed to Corporate Social Responsibility, listening to the concerns of the local population and supporting them, both in terms of education, health, and the environment.
Perenco in Congo regularly undertakes educational initiatives aimed at revealing talented young Congolese and increasing their professional skills. For example, thanks to the partnership signed with FONEA (National Employability Support Fund), Perenco has made a three-year commitment to host internships within its teams for young graduates between 18 and 35 years old, in both operational and support functions.
Perenco is also a partner of the UCAC-UCAM institute in Pointe-Noire, awarding one scholarship per year to the most deserving students, whom the company then supports throughout their studies.
Among the environmental projects, Perenco is supporting a fish farm designed to optimize and develop the industry in the country. In the health sector: through the PASS project, Perenco has been supporting private and public health facilities since 2012
and has helped train and support 1,065 health care workers in their place of practice, thus benefiting the overall improvement of care for nearly 30,000 patients per year.
Above all, Perenco is a group of atypical, pioneering and innovative women and men committed careers. Bold by nature, Perenco in Congo will continue to assert itself as a major, ambitious and responsible player in the Congolese oil industry.

have made a £720,000 investment into a new machine shop to support it.
The addition of CNC machinery, a beam saw and edge bander, saw the investment of the second site rise to more than £1 million.
The investment has seen the introduction of a fourth production line and efficiencies have enabled Atlas to remove the need to transport materials between sites. This has resulted in output being more than doubled.
Whilst the past 12-18 months have seen success across the board for Atlas Leisure Homes, the current economic climate and inflation rate rise has had an impact on demand.
Atlas Leisure Homes remain optimistic that, once the economy sees a sustained period of sustainability, they can start making plans for the future, including how its holiday homes and lodges can become more efficient.

“Everyone is fed up with the construction industry,” said Merit CEO, Tony Wells.
A strong sentiment, but you can’t deny the facts behind Tony’s opinion, this is a global phenomenon; The World Economic forum’s critical assessment of construction published in 2016 noted ‘This unimpressive track record can be attributed to various internal and external challenges: the persistent fragmentation of the industry’ and ‘in the face of such challenges, the industry is almost under a moral obligation to transform’.
In the UK, the lack of investment is notable with the construction industry flagging behind when it comes to Industry 4.0, with only 0.48% of GDP spent on research and development across the sector in the UK.

“Construction is restricting the UK’s GDP growth, and it needs disrupting,” he continued.
Is Merit the company to do it? It’s certainly taking strides, spending 6% of its total sales on R & D.

Since joining Merit in 2002, Tony has been focussed on developing the business, with his strategy seeing the company grow from an annual turnover of £2 million to £50 million in his first five years.
In 2015 he realised that Merit’s strategy would require significant reinvention to achieve its vision.
“We’re now totally focussed on disruptive innovation. Our fundamental aim is to generate profit to self-fund our innovation R&D, expansion investment and business development. Merit is attempting to turn

A Fully Integrated Approach
With its HQ and offsite manufacturing facility based in Northumberland, UK (and two offices in London and Glasgow), Merit is a fully integrated design, manufacturing, build, and validate, turnkey service.
Merit delivers buildings in an entirely unique manner through advanced 4D BIM modelling technology, with a commitment to sustainability. Its buildings are designed to be zero carbon enabled for direct emissions with a BREEAM Excellent rating as standard, with the ability to upgrade to Outstanding.
Distinct to Merit, it is the only company to provide a complete CSA/MEP vertically integrated BIM model all in one.
“We work with our clients to solve facility design challenges in new and efficient ways,” explained Tony, “designs are optimised for improved health and safety, reduced running costs and with direct zero carbon emissions in operation”.
Merit has a library of flexible and scalable designs to suit a range of applications, saving clients significant time and money whilst providing a right-first-time, prevalidated MHRA, GMP or FDA approved facility.
The business has invested into research to benchmark traditional construction models and completely rethought how hi-tech facilities should be designed and built.
“Developing our own offsite techniques, with advanced 4D BIM modelling and other digital technologies, we have taken our manufacturing processes and products to the next level,” said Tony.

With a focus on delivering projects through digital industrialised construction techniques, Merit spends time and effort on front-end design and schedule management. This enables its pre-assembled modules to go into manufacture early for every project, saving customers valuable time and ultimately money.
“Merit’s approach is to develop industrialised construction techniques and products to drive increased productivity and transform the way construction projects are delivered. Industrialised construction offers faster project delivery, reduced costs and carbon emissions,” explained Tony.
Finally, Merit’s performance driven and cost saving model has an integrated compliance validation service, able to certify HVAC and other building service installations to GMP, MHRA, FDA and bespoke client requirements.
Merit’s product offering includes its own UltraPOD® and FLEXI POD® solutions. Whilst these products are used across a wide range of industries, it has found particular success in healthcare, pharmaceutical, bioscience, battery manufacture and semiconductor industries.
Both products deliver projects with 75-92% Pre-Manufactured Value in around half the time of a traditional design and build process.
Time for Reinvention
Whilst the construction industry has seen a positive recovery post-pandemic, it is still facing important challenges such as rising costs and a weaker economy. Cost effective and sustainably forward businesses like Merit are crucial to the development of the UK.
Ensuring its longevity, Merit’s CEO’s focus is on ensuring it meets the growing technological and sustainable expectations of its customers, with a vision to double its revenue and profits annually.

“We are hungry for growth, but it is key to be patient and focus on growing the business EBITDA first,” said Tony.
Amongst its plans is continued digitisation, CNC, and robotic manufacturing implementation.
“As part of our business growth we have plans to develop our manufacturing facility further. We have strategies in place for the automation of our production system and ISA95 strategy,” shared Tony.
Merit is committed to delivering sustainable buildings, and to ensure it is ahead of the curve proactively designs in Revit.
“Using Revit, Merit will soon be able to calculate Scope 3 emissions, which will take our offering to the next level,” said Tony.
Merit is on the path to achieving its 2030 targets well ahead of schedule, and will then seek to improve its sustainable methods even further.
“The industry needs to go further, faster,” Tony remarked, “utilising an activity-based carbon analysis of the design choices is just one of the methods we will be researching”.
Growth Mindset
With its focus on bringing innovative, disruptive methods to the construction industry, it’s vital that Merit has the right colleagues on board.
Whilst the sector on a whole is seeing a decline in available workforce, Merit is pushing boundaries in its recruitment approach too.
“Because our technique is both software and technology driven, we see value in employing trainable staff over those that have had years of experience in traditional construction methods,” explained Tony.
Currently, the business employs 330 people, 87 of which are recent graduates and a further 20 are in Merit’s

apprenticeship programme.
With its growth mindset instilled across the business, employee levels for Merit have tripled since its pre-pandemic figures. And the trend matches in its turnover too.
In 2021 the business annual sales reached £40 million, with a record year in 2022 seeing Merit’s overall revenues climb by 44% to over £60 million (and its EBITDA rise by 374% to £4,570,521).
Now, with its strategy in full flow, the business is forecasting sales of £90 million by the close of the 22/23 financial year.
Thanks to its profitability growth and generation of free cash, it has been able to make significant investment in its facilities, opening a new office in 2020, and a second manufacturing facility midpandemic.
“The new manufacturing site has enabled us to double our capacity, and we’re aiming to continue to develop and grow further,” Tony shared.
The company is currently expanding the facilities with a further 44,000sqft double height extension. This will provide capability to assemble products up to 2-storeys high enabling precommissioning before delivery and for clients to see and sign-off their facilities before installation.
Life-saving Projects
The Group’s subsidiary Merit Health is focussed on providing a superior solution to building healthcare facilities quicker, at a lower cost, and with zero carbon emissions in operation.
The offering is ideal for any facilities with requirements for superior infection control and high containment (including biocontainment), such as advanced therapies, theatres, bioscience manufacture and laboratories.
Recent projects in this field included completion of the UK’s first Messenger

RNA vaccine manufacturing facility for CPI in Darlington. The project was completed in 30 weeks, around half the time compared to traditional construction.
At the end of 2022, Merit also completed phase one of the UK’s first CAR-T cell manufacturing facility based in Stevenage for Autolus Therapeutics.
The project saw £66 million invested into the development, which utilised Merit’s FLEXI POD® hybrid solution; comprising aspects of modern methods of construction for the shell and core, and an offsite manufactured fit out facilitated through a Pre-Assembled Module (PAM) and POD strategy.
Merit’s commitment to driving measurable improvement for sustainability means the facility has been designed to EPC A/ BREEAM Excellent rating, with scope 1 net zero carbon enabled using air source heat pumps, heat recovery systems, and 5D BIM technology to reduce waste and give fixed price cost certainty.
The phase one completion of the facility saw the handover of Grade C cleanrooms to Autolus, enabling them to transition seamlessly into their next phase of growth.
“The Autolus Therapeutics project was delivered in 17 months, three years faster than the biotech industry standard of around five years,” explained Tony, “being able to complete these projects wellahead of time is vital in bringing life-saving advanced therapies to the UK, which it is in urgent need of”.
Once launched, the facility is expected to process 2,000 treatments annually and will create 400 new jobs in Stevenage.
“We are very proud to have been able to deploy our unique industrialised construction methods to deliver this vital facility in record time. Productivity is an issue in traditional construction methods, but our approach means projects are delivered more quickly and, crucially, more sustainably.”
Continuing its work in this field, Merit has also embarked on a £45m expansion project for Piramal's Antibody Drug Conjugate manufacturing facility at Grangemouth.
With Tony’s growth-mindset at the helm, a growing, innovation-driven team, and a hunger to lead the construction sector’s Industry 4.0, the outlook for Merit is strong.
“As we continue to refine our products with a clear focus on innovation and automation, we are confident of maintaining our current growth path and winning further strategically important projects,” said Tony, “We’re investing in people, apprentices, technology, and factories, to underpin future demand. We are also helping inward investment back to the UK where life science companies are choosing us over overseas competitors”.

In 2014 it was estimated that there were five trillion plastic particles in the ocean. An alarming figure. Now, in 2023, research indicates that figure is in the realm of 170 trillion.
But how does this plastic waste end up in our planet’s water ways? The bottom line: us.
Poor recycling, littering, leakage from landfills, and flushing waste down toilets and drains all ultimately result in plastic finding its way into the ocean.
Amongst the concerns with the “plastic smog” is a threat to food safety and quality, biodiversity, human health, coastal tourism, and a contributing factor to climate change.
If nothing changes, by 2050 it is believed that there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish.
Whilst no one person will solve the issue, there is a pool of talented scientists and entrepreneurs across the globe battling to find solutions - including Dr Suvi Haimi and Dr Laura Tirkkonen-Rajasalo, cofounders of Sulapac.
Sulapac’s revolutionary new materials offer an alternative to traditional plastic, which is fully biodegradable.
“The materials are also recyclable and made with recycled bio-based content. Features that are central in reaching a sustainable circular bio-economy”, adds Suvi.
Business Enquirer Magazine · Issue 114 71 SULAPAC
One of the global current environmental crises has been labelled a “plastic smog” by Stockholm University.
Combining Beauty and Function
One of the key selling points of Sulapac’s materials is that it can be processed in existing plastic product machinery.
“Our products make switching from conventional plastic to an eco-friendly alternative easier than you would expect,” explained Suvi.
Sulapac has created materials which can be used for a variety of applications at scale, from cosmetics to food packaging, cutlery and straws.
Amongst its solutions is Sulapac Universal, a 100% bio-based material which biodegrades without leaving permanent microplastics behind and can be recycled, via mechanical or chemical recycling as soon as its available, or industrial composting.
“Sulapac Universal is a fantastic, sustainable alternative to plastic for rigid products such as jars, hangers and luxury packaging,” explained Laura.
The business has also developed Universal Flex 30, a material which is suitable for single-use and reusable cutlery.
“Universal Flex 30 is a sustainable option for injection moulding which ensures easy mass-manufacturing. It’s 78% bio-based, offers excellent flexural strain and impact strength, and complies to EU and FDA food contact regulations. This makes it a brilliant alternative for knives and forks,” Laura continued.
The business also offers a range of Luxe and Luxe Flex materials, considered the ultimate answer for brands seeking a sustainable yet luxurious material for fragrance bottle caps or jar lids.
“The materials have high density, good resistance to temperature fluctuations and they act as an excellent substitute to hard plastics such as ABS. With Sulapac Luxe materials you can create either a shiny or a matt surface depending on your mould selection,” detailed Laura, “Like all

Sulapac materials, they are recyclable and leave no permanent microplastics or toxic load behind”.
In an era where sustainability is high on the agenda for many brands, it is clear why Sulapac is an attractive supplier for major names such as Chanel, Marimekko, and Fazer.
Partnering with Chanel, Sulapac is supporting the $15 billion global brand in the launch of its latest step into sustainability.
N°1 de CHANEL takes an innovative and eco-responsible approach to beauty combining skincare, makeup and a fragrance mist.
Whilst its formulas include naturalorigin and renewable ingredients, it has ensured the product goes full-circle by including eco-designed packaging using sustainable Sulapac material.
“It was fascinating to combine byproducts like camellia seed shells and FSC certified wood chips in this unique packaging material for Chanel. It enabled Sulapac to support Chanel in reducing the environmental footprint of its N°1 de CHANEL product range even further,” said Suvi.
Whilst the sustainable credentials of Sulapac’s materials speak for themselves, customers also value the combination of functionality and beauty.
“As our materials can be used in existing plastic product processing machinery, we’re able to support brands in creating their uniquely styled products, whilst ensuring they have the high-end touch and feel too,” shared Laura, “customer experience is also very high on our agenda, and our team of 27 in Helsinki are united by that”.

To differentiate ourselves from other distributors, we are now transforming our warehouse towards a Good Distribution Practice (GDP) certified warehouse. With the storage of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), this innovation creates the perfect storage conditions for BioPlastics such as Sulapac.
Much More Than Your Stereotypical Partner
Partnerships work for APG in two ways. We deliver customized solutions and services to our customers. But we also work closely with our network of reliable international suppliers, whom we carefully select. The development of these partnerships takes time. Our cooperation with Sulapac has already been developing for seven years and we’re continually working on executing our long-term vision.
APG Europe is undoubtedly your key supply chain management partner in guiding your brand towards sustainability with the complete Sulapac portfolio.

Small But Mighty
Established in 2016 and with a relatively small team, Sulapac are making huge strides within the sustainable packaging industry.
Both Suvi and Laura hail from a scientific, biomaterial background and found mutual ambition to solve the “plastic waste problem”.
“To be successful you need good innovation, but you also need an enthusiastic, experienced team,” said Suvi, “our team is the cornerstone of the business and it’s essential that we as business leaders do our best to both promote a healthy work-life balance and support our employees in reaching their full potential”.
“By creating a safe environment for our colleagues, we know innovation can blossom,” she continued.
As well as its team, Suvi and Laura are under no illusion that systemic change isn’t vital to Sulapac’s future scale-up.
“Part of the challenge is ensuring that the infrastructure is there for our products to be recycled properly,” shared Laura, who is taking on a key role at Sulapac as Director of Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs.
“Policy makers, waste managers and industry players need to work together to build the infrastructure and support the globe’s overarching sustainability goals,” she continued, “ultimately, the materials need to be recyclable at scale by 2030. What’s important to note is that if our materials were to escape the recycling facility, they would still be safe for the environment”.
Within her role, Laura has also focused research on ensuring Sulapac’s materials are food contact compliant within different geographies.

CHILE’S MINING PIONEERS
A union between Poland’s KGHM copper mining company and Australia’s mining and metals company, South32, has seen groundbreaking developments made at Sierra Gorda SCM.
84 Issue 114 · Business Enquirer Magazine
The mine, which is found in Sierra Gorda itself, produces copper and molybdenum concentrate. On a daily basis 115,000 tons of ore are processed, with 108,000 tons of copper and 9,000 tonnes of molybdenum produced per year.
Sierra Gorda SCM is considered pioneers in low grade mining, producing the lowest grade of copper sulphides, with optimisation of resources and the use of new technologies at the core of both its success and vision for the future.
A Meeting of ‘Mines’
Whilst mineralisation of Sierra Gorda was discovered in 2006 and the mine commissioned in 2014, the joint venture between KGHM and South32 at the property dates back just a year.
KGHM International, which owns a 55% share of the joint venture, staked claim to the property in 2011, in a previous joint venture.
The business, which operates six mines in Canada, Chile and the US, is one of the largest companies in Poland. In addition to Sierra Gorda SCM, it has exploration projects: Glogow Glebaki Przemyslowy, Poland, and Victoria and Ajax, Canada.
Announcing its partnership with South32 in February 2022 (and therefore ending its partnership with Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd and Sumitomo Corporation, Marcin Chludziński commented that the Sierra Gorda mine had needed restructuring and was now beginning to bring profits.
"Sierra Gorda is a demanding but very satisfying project. We have put in a lot of effort and attention to reverse some deep-rooted trends, and the mine's results after three years of our intensive work are impressive," he said.

Driving Innovation for a Sustainable Future
The work at Sierra Gorda SCM is driven by sustainability and innovation, in particular how best to work with the region's natural resources.
Sierra Gorda SCM have made it clear that one of its main objectives has been to minimise any potential impact on communities and the environment.
In January 2023 the business announced its first month operating with 100% renewable electrical energy.
This milestone was achieved thanks to a long-term power purchase agreement with AES Andes, one of the main electric power generators in Chile. Energy from AES Andes is sourced from solar, wind, hydroelectric and battery energy. The agreement is currently in place until December 2039.
Of the achievement, Tomasz Piwowarczyk, interim General Manager, said “Our company shows that it is possible to
do green and efficient mining with a low grade like ours and develop production in a sustainable way. We are happy to share this great news that comes three years after starting our parcelled supply of green energy, and that today already has us with 100% energy from renewable sources. Thanks to this, the copper and molybdenum that we produce is greener, since it contains a smaller carbon footprint.”2
In addition, Sierra Gorda SCM has facilitated the construction of the Mejillones - Sierra Gorda aqueduct. The aqueduct plays an important role in the local environment by recovering wastewater from the cooling of electric turbines. The system operates with a water distribution system, which recovers seawater from the cooling process of a Mejillones thermoelectric plant, reaching expected pumping values above 5,000 m3 per hour.
The business also utilises High Pressure Grinding Roller mills, a crushing technology that minimises energy expenditure and ensures the competitiveness of the copper industry. This innovation is unique in Chile.
Finally, slope angle innovation enables Sierra Gorda SCM to improve its operation by increasing the sterile ore ratio in the

BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE: TRANSFORMATION FOR THE FUTURE OF CODELCO
The transformation, which saw increased success during the Covid pandemic, seeks excellence in operations and projects, aiming to capture increased value from its assets, and a cultural change that promotes new ways of operating.
Over the next 50 years, the Chilean stateowned copper mining company is on a mission to maximise its economic value and its contribution to Chile through copper mining.
Through its transformation, it aims to enhance its surplus by $1 billion per year (from 2021 onwards) whilst ensuring the financing and development of its structural projects.
Important to the future of any modernday mining company, Codelco also aims to become a world standard example in terms of sustainability, transparency and probity, innovation, and people development.
Codelco’s operations focus on seven mining divisions across Chile, with a collective personnel of 14,000. The projects, the oldest of which dates back to 1905, are Chuquicamata, Ministro Hales, Radomiro Tomic, Gabriela Mistral, Salvador, Andina and El Teniente. The projects’ reserves

represent 6% of global copper reserves.
In addition, Codelco operates Ventanas Smelter and Refinery refinery which produces more than 400,000 tonnes of cathodes per year.
Leading the Charge
Driving Codelco’s transformation is recently appointed CEO, André Sougarret Larroquete, who took on the role at the end of August 2022.
If André’s name seems recognisable, it's because he gained significant respect and recognition for his outstanding performance in leading the rescue of 33 trapped miners in the San José Mine accident.
"The complexities and urgent tasks that this company must face, but especially the expectations that Chile has of the country's main company, require leadership like André's, which I have no doubt is widely recognised. In addition

The perfect candidate to lead Codelco on its upcoming journey, André returned to Codelco at the end of 2020 to take over as Vice President of Northern Operations. He had previously taken on senior roles at Antofagasta Minerals, Enami, and Minera Fresnillo.
Of Codelco’s plans for the coming years, André said:
“Our focus is to solve the challenges of structural projects. They are being reviewed, we are better defining the roles and responsibilities, we will reinforce the teams so that they efficiently solve construction challenges and prepare their implementation. We will also manage the increasingly complex environment around logistics and input prices. At the end of the decade, we want to fulfil the promise of giving our operations 50 more years of life and recovering a production of 1.7 million tons, including our participation in El Abra and Anglo American Sur.”
Transformation in Action
On its journey to transformation, Codelco is investing significantly into its various assets.
Throughout 2021, the mining operations invested $1,226 million, a figure that

represents 45% of the total investment for the year, in the execution of the structural projects Chuquicamata Subterránea, Teniente Project Portfolio, Andina Transfer and Rajo Inca.
Among the developmental achievements, the advance investments of the Chuquicamata Underground mine stand out, including the "Level 1 continuity infrastructure" and the "Development of mining works".
This structural project at Chuquicamata is transforming the century-old, largest open pit mine, the largest in the world, into a large-scale modern underground operation.
By implementing a block caving method, Codelco is extending the life of the project by at least 40 years.
The project at Chuquicamata began its operation in 2019 and in 2021 more than eight million tons of ore were extracted from the underground mine during its ramp up.
Meanwhile, at El Teniente, which is the largest underground copper deposit on the planet, the business is implementing its recovery plan, which has allowed a sustained increase in the development of Andes Norte, Diamante and Andesita.
Implementing Innovations
Highlighted in its vision, sustainability is high on the agenda for Codelco, and is considered by the business to be fundamental in ensuring it remains viable in the long term.
Codelco has announced its six key initiatives to advance its 2030 sustainable development commitments.
Firstly, it aims to lower its carbon footprint by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70%. By innovating, the mining operation aims to replace all production and logistic equipment in underground mines with electrical equipment. It will also actively participate in the search for new clean energy sources such as green hydrogen.
96 Issue 114 · Business Enquirer Magazine
In April 2023, Codelco announced the renewal of its clean energy contract with the Pampa Elvira solar thermal plant.
Currently, the clean energy project with Pampa Elvira enables Codelco to reduce emissions of 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, and save the business more than $2 million dollars a year.
Additionally, it will reduce its water footprint by 60% and its PM10 emissions by 25%. As part of this initiative Codelco will incorporate a desalination plant and plans to reuse water from its reservoirs. The business also plans to implement new technologies in dust suppression and a detection system for adverse weather conditions to control and reduce particulate matter.
Ensuring its role within the circular economy, Codelco intends to recycle 65% of its industrial waste, including 100% of mining tires. Within this initiative it aims to increase the recycling of the main nonhazardous solid industrial waste from its operations and projects.
As part of its sustainability plans, Codelco aims to set a standard in tailings deposits, with world-class sustainability and safety measures. Using innovative systems the business will monitor the physical and chemical stability of the tailings deposits, enabling it to apply infiltration control systems.
Finally, and crucially for a business which is state-owned, Codelco plans to uplift its social value, by increasing its local supply chain by 60%, as well as increasing its local workforce.
“At Codelco we are not sitting idle; we have the resources and capabilities to resume the development path, despite the incidents of these years, and extend the life of our company for 40 or 50 more years. All of us who are part of this company are looking for the best formulas that allow us to ensure the contribution of resources to the country,” said André.

DISRUPTIVE DRINKS FROM CENTRAL EUROPE
The saying goes, “don’t judge a book by its cover”. But should you judge a drink by its bottle? The founders of Curius certainly think so.
Collectively, the founders of Curius, Alexander Curiger, Mats Olsson, and Juan Carlos Maroto Jara, have 50 years experience in launching FMCG and luxury brands. Having garnered their experience with the likes of L’Oreal, Red Bull and Pernod Ricard, it’s now the turn of their own, unique, drinks brands.
Alexander, who spoke exclusively to Business Enquirer about the launch of Curius’ three disruptive drinks, is also the man behind Silverbogen AG, the drinks marketer and distributor.
“With the hospitality sector closing down for a large proportion of the pandemic, there was huge growth in beverage e-Commerce,” shared Alexander, “we had been talking for years about doing something together and a crisis like Covid-19 was the perfect opportunity to kick-start the project with a gamechanging approach. We knew we would need to focusing on creating brands conceptualised in a digital environment, easily decodable for the consumer and putting first logistic benefits, that’s the CURIUS motto: design with purpose”.

CURIUS
A Drink for All the Senses
The first product to be launched by Curius is Match Tonic Water.
“We chose the name Match, as tonic water is rarely consumed on its own - but it’s the perfect match for spirits like gin. We’re also looking for other innovative matches with other trending topic spirits,” explained Alexander.
Curius’ concept is unique, starting from the outside and working in. “We always work by creating a purpose-driven bottle, secondary packaging (four-packs) and label design first, and then we work on a liquid to fit the concept,” Alexander continued.
Whilst Match’s bottle is made from 100% post-recycled glass and all the range is formulated with a superfoods, whats really unique is its shape.

At the end of 2021 Addison Lee shared research that showed 40% of all one-star retailers' reviews in the UK boil down to delivery issues. Not only does it leave a sour taste in the buyer’s mouth, it also costs businesses money in replacement packages.
Designed with delivery in mind, Match comes in an unusual, square, bottle. By changing the traditional cylindrical tonic bottle to a square, Curius have managed to industrialise something completely unprecedented, reducing pressure points. In addition, the square design means less packaging is needed as bottles fit compactly together where the stackability it’s another key benefit.
“To accommodate the square bottle design, we had to completely change the existing bottle line and ended up creating our own. We also had challenges with carbon pressure inside the square bottle
Business Enquirer Magazine · Issue 114 103 CURIUS
which required a lot of R & D as there was no precedent for this in the industry,” shared Alexander.
Not only does Match’s unique shape stand out for its competition, it also increases the amount of product able to fit on shelves at least by around 20%.
Match aims to push boundaries at every touch point, from its bespoke label to its four-pack container and handle.
Having seen popularity via e-Commerce, Match is now moving into the hospitality sector, with the potential for value-added products.
“We’ll be launching add-ons which will allow the bottles to be reusable in other ways, proudly pushing our circular credentials, such as a spout to create an oil pourer,” said Alexander, “we’ll also create special edition bottles using waste glass when the glass ovens change colour, turning the waste into a collection of "wild" bottles, as each one will be unique”.
With Match growing in Europe, Curius will be launching the tonic brand in the US, LATAM, APAC, Emirates and Australia in the coming months.
A Spirtited Curius-ity
On the horizon for Curius is the launch of its two spirit brands - Kabuki and Veta+.
Kabuki, which is planned to launch in Q3 2023, is considered an alternative way to look at Japanese whisky under the idea of “Respect the Unexpected”
Kabuki is a new take on world-blend, deluxe whisky. Aged in Mizunara rare casks, it aspires to become one of today’s most contemporary whiskies. Once again, Curius have taken a designcentric approach with the brand.
“With its design and high-quality packaging, Kabuki is a premium whisky brand which respects Japanese culture with an ultra-contemporary vision not based on typical clichés. The bottle has a unique shape, and like all of our brands,

stands out from its competitors,” said Alexander.
Meanwhile, Veta+ is a horizontal range of spirits, which includes a vintage single malt whisky crafted with exceptional patience; a triple distilled gin crafted with absolute precision; and a rum aged with respect and curiosity.
“The inspiration for Veta+ is to be quintessentially Swiss - with the bottle featuring clear lines and simplicity,” explained Alexander, “the beverage is a reliable safe haven, just like the famous Swiss bank upgrading the end-consumer thanks to its extremely well made spirits and a vessel that does not go unnoticed”.
Each bottle of spirit comes with its unique,
wooden label, another opportunity for Curius to push boundaries in manufacturing and packaging.
“We’re looking to launch Veta+ in Q2 2024. Currently for all of our brands we’re looking for the right partners in the right channels, so we also do not follow a traditional “route to market” scheme, micro-segmenting it to the skills of each local partner as the need of each CURIUS brand in particular.” shared Alexander.
Unquestionable Quality, Awarded Design
Driven to be considered the industry's most unique tonic water, it’s unsurprising that Match’s bottle has been recognised by the most reputable design awards worldwide.
Business Enquirer Magazine · Issue 114 105 CURIUS
106 Issue 114 · Business Enquirer Magazine
Beating 11,000 entries, Match was recently recognised as one of the 2023 iF Gold Design Award winners. Curius has also been hailed by the Pentawards, a leader in packaging design, achieving an unequalled milestone by winning four awards in the year of its debut.
They also succumbed to CURIUS' proposal in at the German Design Awards.
Ultimately, Curius want to tackle the beverage industry similarly to the beauty and lifestyle industry.
“Of course, the quality of the liquid is important, but unlike competitors, we only consider it 95% important. Our designs are purpose driven and always have strong & unique a story to tell,” explained Alexander.
Curius was established during the Covid-19 lockdown whilst Alexander, Mats, and Juan Carlos were all located in different countries.
“It meant that the business was built on a foundation of mutual trust and respect. We always look to learn and grow, and we’re not afraid of failure,” said Alexander.
Rather than a sales driven team, Curius focuses on employing colleagues who are able to embrace the brand’s story, and ensure the products look and feel is brought to the fore - people are said to eat (and in this context, drink) with their eyes, after all.

LTM ENERGY PROJECT

According to the African Development Bank, more than 640 million people across Africa are without electricity.
Africa’s 48 Sub-saharan countries collectively reach just 68 gigawatts in installed generation capacity, with as much as one quarter of that unavailable due to aging plants and poor maintenance.
Countries across Africa are consistently facing power outages, with the economic cost amounting to more than 2% of a country’s GDP. South Africa alone saw more than 200 days of power cuts in 2022, with fears that if the crisis continues at the current rate, less than 40% of African countries will reach universal access to electricity by 2050.
One of the solutions considered instrumental in the curing of Africa’s energy crisis is implementing a full package of sustainability measures.
South African based LTM Energy Group are working at the forefront of bringing a multi-disciplined strategy of measures to businesses (and beyond) to ensure energy and water becomes accessible to all.
“South Africa is struggling to meet energy demands, but with challenge comes opportunity,” explained LTM Energy CEO, Dhevan Pillay, when speaking to Business Enquirer. “Energy security, network risk and compliance to decarbonisation are all compelling drivers for our corporate customers which make our package of measures appealing”.
LTM ENERGY
Clean Energy and Water for All
LTM Energy is a multiple international award-winning company which pride themselves in using smart technologies and processes to improve people’s lives whilst saving the planet.
Developed in-house, LTM Energy recently introduced its latest version of its Enhanced Smart Utility Management System (eSUMS), helping companies not only reduce their utility costs but also boost their climate change mitigation contribution. Used by LTM Energy clients across 19 different countries in Africa for greenhousegas reporting, carbon tax compliance and science-based target setting, eSUMS has also saved companies millions.
“In the wake of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the undeniable risks posed by climate change, organisations need to measure impacts and disclose their total carbon footprint. It is wisest to consolidate their efforts using one system that is already measuring utility data,” says the LTM Energy CEO.
Real-time monitoring is coupled with control functionality, while LTM Energy engineers perform value engineering services on data
obtained from the system’s user-friendly dashboards.
Additionally, algorithms used in the various modules, such as the carbon module, allow for automated processing without any human interface, which can limit errors and improve reporting accuracy.
In addition, it has several subsidiaries working to support Africa’s green energy transition: Alliance Energy, LTM Sustainability consulting, Green Investment Corporation, Distributed Renewable Assets, Mesure, and Hydropower Generation.
LTM Energy Group, which has a team of national multi-disciplinary engineers and project managers, is on a mission to accelerate customer’s renewable energy and ESG strategies via five pillars:
Energy Management; Water Management; Renewable Energy; Off-Grid Sanitation; and Alternative Forms of Cleaner Energy
(such as gas and conduit hydro).
Whilst the business mostly supports the industrial, commercial, and mining sectors, it has recently stepped into supporting the residential sphere.

“Our vision is to ensure access to clean energy and water for all,” said Dhevan.
Enriching Lives
LTM Energy is the first company of its kind in Africa to recognise conduit hydropower as a suitable renewable energy source.
Conduit hydropower generally uses existing water pipelines, tunnels, canals and aqueducts to produce power via water turbines.
Dhevan considers this energy source an opportunity moving forward.
“Conduit hydropower is harnessing wasted energy, and it offers phenomenal cost savings,” he shared “it costs around 50 cents per kilowatt per hour, about a third of the current utility price”.
The CEO and his team are working on many innovative projects, pushing the boundaries of sustainable engineering. This includes research and development in fuel cells and vanadium for better storage and Quadgeneration as a base load source of power to mitigate energy security risks
“Advancing from Cogeneration and Trigeneration, Quadgeneration also includes carbon capture. It offers the next level in harvesting CO2 whilst meeting energy, heating and cooling needs,” explained Dhevan.
Working alongside international partners such as Tata, Coca Cola Bottling South Africa (CCBSA) and The Gates Foundation, LTM Energy have developed several projects to support communities in Africa in need of vital energy, water and sanitation solutions.
Project SICAS (Sustainability in Communities and Schools) includes LTM Energy’s work with CCBSA on the awardwinning CokeVille project.
Launched in 2019, the ground-breaking project is an off-grid, solar-powered
groundwater harvesting and treatment programme — targeting communities experiencing water insecurity.
“The aim is to roll out Project SICAS across Africa, enabling us to positively impact the quality of life for even more people. The impacts we are having on communities spans far beyond the implementation of sustainable energy,” explained Dhevan, “by facilitating clean energy and clean water, communities are able to improve their farming and agriculture, it’s going full circle”.
Working with commercial businesses, Programme CERO (Corporate Employee Roll Out) offers green energy solutions to businesses in a structured programme of measures.
Supporting employees of partners such as CCBSA, LTM Energy provides them with green solutions and methodology in energy efficiency.
Innovate, Innovate, Innovate
The CEO foresees some major technological disruptors on the horizon for sustainable energy, particularly with the rise and rise of IoT and AI.
“Let’s take Nokia as an example,” said Dhevan, “technology has changed so dramatically since the release of the first Nokia mobile phone - now, we all use Android and iOS. This is synonymous with how I see the rapid development of the energy sector through technology”.
Dhevan believes that the industry needs to embrace the future disruptive technologies, whilst ensuring it is combined with human spirit and intervention.
“LTM Energy can provide funding for a no-brainer, turn-key, clean energy and water solution with a compelling value proposition. But, above all, everyone should have dignity and access to the essentials,” the CEO concluded.

Globally, people are averaging nearly seven hours of screen time per day. QC Terme is the Italian spa, resort, and wellness brand encouraging you to disconnect.
With 12 facilities across Europe and in New York, USA, the family business has developed a wellness-driven, aesthetically beautiful, and sustainable offering to the health and wellness space.
CEO, Andrea Quadrio Curzio discusses with Business Enquire the unique QC Termemilano Wellness centre, as well as the business plans for the future.
Discovery, Knowledge, And Play
Milan is a busy, up-and-coming tourist destination, rivalling its Italian competitors for footfall such as Rome, Venice and Lake Garda.
Visitors can lose hours in Milan, from stepping on to Duomo Square to take in the breathtaking, 600-year-old gothic cathedral, to shopping until you drop in Quadrilatero d’Oro. So, you may just need some time to relax and recuperate.
There’s no better place to do so than the QC Termemilano Wellness Centre, which offers over 30 different wellness practices.
Located in the heart of Milan in Porta Romana, the facility is found in an art nouveau complex, where elegant architecture blends with technology.
“QC Termemilano is built on discovery, knowledge and play,” shared Andrea. The facilities in Milan include a water and salt room, which utilises the relaxing effects of a marine microclimate, as well as a bio-sauna inspired by Milan’s historic hay quarter, featuring a balsamic, relaxing fragrance.
Ensuring it embraces technology in a beneficial way, the QC Termemilano offers a multi-sensory treatment room in its Monte Tabor room, as well as Cinema Pool -where guests can immerse themselves whilst being captivated by endless projections running above, bringing to life the most evocative scenes.
Business Enquirer Magazine Issue 114 121 QC TERMEMILANO
And whilst guests may have experienced something similar, you will be hard pressed to find a rival for the wellness centre’s Porta Romana tram bio-sauna. That’s right, a sauna inside a historic Ventotto tram carriage.
For those wanting some fresh air, QC Termemilano’s facilities expand to the outside, too.
Guests can take a scenic walk along the Darsena Garden, the architecture of which follows the contour of the Spanish walls in which the QC Termemilano is inside. “Our outdoor ‘thousand blue bubble pool’ is encompassed with glass walls to reveal the Ancient Spanish walls, it’s a really unique and beautiful experience,” explained Andrea.
And once your feet are suitably rested, challenge your soles to a walk along Carrara stones, fir cones, volcanic lava stones and bark, to reactivate your blood circulation and inspire a feeling of wellness throughout your body.
Mill with the Milanese
With such a vast, premium, offering for its guests, it’s easy to see how the QC Termemilano has risen in popularity.
“When creating the centre we used the building’s surroundings such as the Spanish Wall and the landscape asanasset, tocreateafullyimmersive experience,”sharedAndrea,“Ithinkoneof thereasonsthewellnesscentrehasbeen successfulisbecauseoftheencompassed feelingcreatedbythewalls”.

Wellbeing for You and the Planet
Whilst you focus on taking care of yourself, QC Termemilano and the wider QC Terme group will take care of the environment.
QC Terme has made significant investment in sustainable measures across its venues, including QC Termemilano. “We’ve implemented small changes in our day-to-day that can make a big difference. This includes reducing waste water by reusing it in our heat pumps and for plants,” explained Andrea.
The brand has also designed a collection of disposable products that are fully biodegradable.
“We are providing some wellbeing for mother nature too, making our planet a more hospitable place for us and for generations to come,” he continued.
Collaborating with Colleagues
Whilst the attraction for guests to QC Termemilano is obvious, what about its staff?
Firstly, Andrea and his leadership team refer to colleagues as “collaborators”, which gives a clear indication of approach.
“Prior to establishing QC Terme, I was a lawyer, a far cry from this industry. So, I consider my colleagues as collaborators. Everyone has the opportunity to present ideas and have them listened to, and I learn a lot from them,” he said.
According to the Milan Tourism board, the Milan Metropolitan Area saw an increase in tourist footfall by 4.4% to 17.6 million in 2022, compared to prepandemic figures. Meanwhile, the wellness sector also saw a considerable boom post-pandemic.
This combination means there is a fantastic potential for QC Termemilano and its staff for longevity.
“With tourism being a key sector in Milan, a lot of jobs are seasonal,” said Andrea, “we give the opportunity for long-term careers, which are stable and growing”.

In the last 12 months, Milan has seen significant investment into its tourism sector, with an expected 24,000 new hotel rooms being added by 20261
Amongst the investments is the complete renovation and remodelling of the Hotel Cristoforo Colombo.
Director of Sales and Revenue, Fabio Bettinelli, and Sales Manager, Sarah Calza, speak exclusively with Business Enquirer about the hotel’s relaunch.
Where Classic Meets Contemporary
“Key to the hotel is its location,” shared Fabio.
Found just a 10 minute walk from the city’s Duomo di Milano Cathedral, and 1.5km from Milan’s shopping district, theHotel Cristoforo Colombo is perfectly situated for those wanting to stay central to Milan’s sights.
Officially bestowed the moniker of “Fashion Capital of the World,” Milan is home to some of the biggest names in fashion, most of which can be found in the Quadrilatero d’Oro. Meanwhile, Via Montenapoleone was named Europe’s most expensive street in Europe, and third most expensive in the world.
Ensuring the hotel is fit for the growing tourism industry in Milan, the Hotel Cristoforo Colombo has seen a complete makeover, bringing it up-to-date for the modern guest.

Whilst the building dates back to 1880, it opened its doors as a hotel around 40 years ago. It has seen several renovations in the last 15 years, but none as big as the one being launched in 2023.

And guests may very well appreciate the opportunity to burn off a few calories, with the launch of the hotel’s sophisticated, new restaurant.
Restaurant Chiantà is managed by Head Chef, Vito Paterniti, whose previous experience includes fine dining and a one Michelin star restaurant.
“The restaurant’s speciality is vegetarian with a mediterranean influence. The name itself comes from the Sicilian word “to plant”,” explained Fabio, “our chef is bringing great value to the raw materials and seasonal produce. The world-class menu offers a modern cuisine but not forgetting Italian tradition”.
Serving from 6pm to 10.30pm, Chiantà’s latest à la carte menu features mouthwatering Italian dishes, for example the Fusillo di Nola, with courgette pesto, almond mousse, anchovies and candied cedar. Flexing Vito’s 5-star and Michelin experience, the menu also includes a Mozzarella ice cream.
For those wishing to unwind in their room, the room service menu includes pizza, caesar salad, and something a little extra special. Vito’s Childhood Memory is a dessert with crunchy bread, chocolate, and rosemary ice cream.
The hotel also offers a well-stocked bar, including Chiantà’s own cocktails, such as the Chiantà Spritz, the venue’s take on the traditional Aperol Spritz, made with St Germain, Aperol, Prosecco, and Grapefruit Soda.
It’s the perfect setting to relax with loved ones or meet business partners.
Welcoming Growth
As part of the hotel’s growth, its leadership team has identified the importance of social media marketing done well, and has enlisted the support of an external company to manage this.
“Social media is becoming increasingly important to the commercial aspect of our business,” said Fabio, “its key for us to showcase not only the hotel but also what’s on offer in Milan, to attract travellers to the city. I think that by the end of 2023, Milan will be a very popular city for leisure travellers, and we have the opportunity to impact that”.
Post-launch of the fully renovated hotel, the focus for the Worldhotel Cristoforo Colombo will be to focus on the wants and needs of its residents.
“We need to transition with our guests' needs, and guest relations will always be our priority,” shared Sarah.
The challenge for the hotel is finding enough professionals to staff the busy hotel. Owing to travel restrictions caused by the global Covid pandemic, around 263,000 tourism related jobs were discontinued by the end of 2021 in Italy alone. The impact of this is causing a continued shortfall of industry professionals in 2023.
“Our General Manager, Fabio Renna, is working on improving the uptake of roles at the Worldhotel Cristoforo Colombo. Tourism is a major industry for Italy, and so there is a lot of opportunity in the sector. We welcome applications from people with little experience, as the development and training opportunities we offer are significant,” said Fabio.
As Cristoforo Colombo himself once said, “Riches don’t make a man rich, they only make a man busier”.
So, why not spend your hard earned riches by busily exploring the many facets which Milan has to offer?
“You will be warmly welcomed at Hotel Cristoforo Colombo,” closed Sarah.

Give Your Staff The Chilly’s!
Whether it’s in tech, manufacturing, or publishing like the team here at Business Enquirer, the modus operandi for almost every business is to increase productivity, whilst ensuring your colleagues are flourishing.
The European Food Safety Authority recommends a total water intake of 2.5 litres for men and 2 litres for women per day. And whilst some of this can come from food, 70–80% of this should come from fluids.
With our brains being made up of 70% water, it’s no surprise that keeping colleagues hydrated can have positive impacts on your business.
Research shared by the UK’s Natural Water Sources Organisation shows that a reduction in dehydration levels of as little as 2% of body weight can influence mood, lead to greater feelings of fatigue and reduced levels of alertness - so hydration is just as much about productivity as it is safety.
Not only that, hydration in the workplace is written into law. In the UK, The 1992
