PIP INTERNATIONAL: CELEBRATING MILESTONES AND LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
We are excited to share significant progress and milestones achieved by our company in the commissioning phase of our ground-breaking project: the development of a new type of pea protein, Ultimate Pea Protein isolate (UP.P™). As we continue to push the boundaries of innovation, sustainability, and nutritional excellence we want to provide you with a comprehensive update on our journey so far.
Project Overview:
Our journey began with a vision: to create a plant-based protein that not only meets but exceeds industry standards in terms of quality, functionality, and sustainability at an affordable price. Traditional pea protein has long been celebrated for its plant-based, hypoallergenic, and environmentally friendly attributes. However, we saw an opportunity to refine and elevate this protein source to new heights, including taking away the offputting taste, colour, and odor that is generally associated with pea protein.
Milestone 1: Cutting-Edge Processing Facility
We are thrilled to announce that we are in final commissioning steps of automating our state-of-the-art processing facility. Located in the heart of our pea-protein cultivation region, this facility is designed to maximize efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. It incorporates the latest advancements in sustainable manufacturing, including energy-efficient
equipment, water-usage reduction systems, and waste-reduction processes.
Milestone 2: Sustainable Farming Practices
Central to our mission is sustainability, and we’re proud to report that our commitment extends to the very roots of our operation. Our pea protein is sourced from farms that adhere to regenerative agricultural practices, minimizing soil erosion, conserving water, and promoting biodiversity. By working closely with local and regional farmers, we’re not only ensuring a steady supply of highquality peas but also contributing to the prosperity of the communities we operate in and around.
Milestone 3: Advanced Protein Extraction Techniques
One of the key innovations driving our project is the development of advanced protein extraction techniques. These methods allow us to obtain the purest form of pea protein while preserving nutritional and functional integrity. The result is a protein with enhanced solubility, a smoother texture, and a superior taste profile compared to conventional pea protein.
6 Issue 118 · Business Enquirer Magazine PARTNER UPDATES

CEO Edson R. Dos Santos j
Luanda city, Angolan capital from above,
The business previously known as Somoil, Etu Energias has seen an incredible shift to success since CEO Edson R. Dos Santos joined the energy company in 2020.
In the last 3 years the business has not only rebranded, but it has been reshaped, with the CEO telling Business Enquirer that “the “How” is almost as important as the “Why”.
The business’ rebrand to Etu Energias encompasses the ambitious change in the business along with embodying its vision for the future.
“Etu stands for Energy, Transparency, and Union, and it is also a Bantu word which means “you and me together”,” explained Edson, “not only are we in the energy sphere, we consider ourselves an energetic business. We believe in saying what we do and doing what we say, and making the right partnerships”.
But what’s in a name? As Edson said, the how is just as important as the result.
On its journey to shift from petroleum company to Angola’s largest private energy company, Edson and his team launched the “Emagrece” (a Portuguese word meaning “to lose weight”) program, devised to challenge every dollar spent by the business.
In addition, Etu Energias migrated its old, 1960’s technology to innovative technology designed to improve efficiencies.
“New technology enabled us to mobilise a new rig, allowing the business to increase production,” added Edson.
Operating mainly out of the Lower Congo Basin, this increased production has seen the business grow from producing 7,000 barrels per day to 20,000 barrels per day. In May 2023, it announced plans to increase this to 50,000 by 2025.
Business Enquirer Magazine · Issue 118 21 ETU ENERGIAS
“During this period of reorganisation we also improved our OpEx, bringing the production cost of a barrel down from $22 to $14,” said Edson.
These business improvements resulted in Etu Energias seeing a net profit of $180 million in 2022.
Celebrating its 23rd year in business in July 2023, Etu Energias is now on a mission to become known as the “number one integrated energy company”.
An Energy Company with Care
Recently, Etu Energias was awarded the “Best Local Company of the Year” at Angola’s largest energy event: Gala AOG 2023.
Receiving the award, CEO Edson said “this award belongs to the entire Etu Energias family. Believe in your employees, bet on them and invest in your employees”.
He added, “We are very, very proud, clearly the company and our deserves it. We believe in partnerships and he progress we made wouldn´t be possible without the support of the government, that allows us to work and perform, our partners that co-invest with us in this assets, and importantly our people and their dedication that they put into the work. Most of our workforce is Angolan, 98% of the Etu Energias workforce is national, and there is passion in the work that we do. We believe that we can grow a lot more. Clearly we will continue to invest in energy.”
Workforce is an element which Edson values very highly, believing people are a key asset in ensuring Etu Energias remains sustainable.

“The business cannot grow without investing in training” he said, “we rely on good international partnerships to ensure colleagues receive the best training opportunities which can both speed up career growth and bolster the business”.
Crucially, Etu Energias has made educational and financial investment into safety, and proudly boasts two and a half years injury free.
A key mission for the energy company is to take care of the community in which it works, which expands beyond its staff, making investments in health, education and the community.
Etu Energias social investment is founded on a “one-stop” approach, ensuring that it continually provides support to its initiatives, taking the time to identify true needs.
“In regions where we have built schools for example, the question is the quality of teaching up to standard? We have advanced our investments by providing additional training to teachers and ensuring that they have accessibility to the school,” shared Edson, telling an anecdote which involved purchasing a motorbike for a teacher to guarantee they could get to work.
Creating a circular approach to its social investment, Etu Energias also ensures its support reflects the business’ capabilities by providing sustainable energy to the schools and hospitals it works with via solar panels, for example.
“As an energy company, one thing we’re very experienced in is drilling wells. One of our health initiatives is to drill wells to provide water to communities,” added Edson. To date, more than 200,000 people have directly benefited from the business social investment into health.
“As our revenue grows, our social investment will grow too,” he continued.

The plan demonstrates the business’ clear strategy to ensure the Obuasi mine and its host communities reap sustained benefits from the mining activities of AngloGold Ashanti in the region.
The SEDP articulates the social investment strategy for Obuasi mine for the period until 2031. The ten-year plan will focus on three intermediate outcomes: improved social development; a diversified and sustained local economy; and improved partnerships.
Underpinning the key outcomes, AngloGold Ashanti will make efforts
in quality health services, education, skills development, access to water, sanitation, and hygiene, community infrastructure, industrialisation, agriculture, and business development and entrepreneurship.
To further improve access to quality health services, AngloGold Ashanti have entered a four-year partnership with the German Development Implementing Agency in Ghana, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
The focus of this agreement is on community health programmes and

building capacity, equipment, and screening activities. AngloGold Ashanti Ghana has already expanded and rehabilitated the Anyinam Clinic into a sub-district health centre to provide primary healthcare to surrounding areas. In addition, the business is working alongside the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation and Ghana Education Service to distribute 34,000 copies of numeracy and literacy books to all public basic schools in Obuasi.
In addition, it has identified the Sanso Community as a beneficiary project, and by November 2023 will complete the build of a nine-unit classroom block with WASH, ICT, and other ancillary facilities.
Vocational and trade-based training is a critical component of AngloGold Ashanti’s SEDP’s educational interventions. With this in mind, the business is implementing apprenticeship training in automechanics, auto-electricals, welding, and fabrication for young people in the Obuasi community.
From a sanitation and hygiene perspective, the organisation’s SEDP will focus on providing potable water to the communities in which it works.
Since the SEDPs launch in August 2022, AngloGold Ashanti Ghana has provided water systems to four communities with plans for five more communities in 2023. Working alongside the Environmental Protection Agency, traditional authorities, and local government, the mining business has established the “Keep Obuasi Clean” campaign. The campaign promotes hygiene with a monthly cleanup exercise, with similar programmes being run in schools where pupils will serve as ambassadors to ensure longevity of the initiative.
“All the SEDP interventions are approached with due regard for equity, diversity, and inclusion, which are integral to the process, making provision to support women, youth and physically challenged community members,” says the program report1

that are both useful and practical for water, waste, and energy management.
VEOLIA, Ecological Transformation in Mining
Veolia is the world leader in environmental solutions for the mining and metals market including water, wastewater, industrial cleaning, water management, resource recovery, and energy services. Veolia is present in all 6 continents with almost one(1) billion revenue in the mining and metals sector representing a global market share of almost 8%. We work with more than 100 mining sites worldwide and while we operate at the highest level of health & safety, we help mining companies reconcile business productivity and environmental sustainability from:
• Managing wastewater and residues;
• Optimizing industrial waste management;
• Recovering industrial by-products;
• Decarbonizing the activities of the mine.
We go beyond our portfolio of service offer and design fit-for-purpose sustainable services in accordance with industry needs. A current priority is to grow long-term water management service contracts with the mining industry and develop our activities in waste and hazardous waste management at mines, including mercury or other residues without creating an environmental legacy at the site. Veolia also began to work with mines to identify sustainable energy alternatives, such as biomass towards improved carbon footprint ambitions. At the Veolia Group level, our commitment is to achieve 15 million metric tons of CO2 eq. in emissions avoided by 2023.
When we focus on West Africa, there is a positive water balance for most mines, unlike other regions where there is a water deficit. What this means for miners is that they must remove contaminants from the water before releasing it into the environment, in compliance with the EPA regulations. Veolia is addressing these challenges in Ghana for instance, where our industrial services are mostly directed to mines and relate to water and salt management.
Our Partnership with AngloGold Ashanti in Ghana
In 2019, Veolia signed a contract with AngloGold Ashanti to operate and maintain their water treatment plants at the Obuasi mine, while the project was still on care and maintenance. Now that mining has resumed and production is aiming to increase, we have 110 people working on 24/7 rotation shifts. We have two main tasks: The first is to operate four mining effluent treatment plants to ensure that the excess water discharged complies with environmental standards, and the second is to operate two drinking water plants that deliver water to the site accommodation and the surrounding community infrastructures. We were also engaged in a feasibility study and tasked with providing a comprehensive assessment of the water management process, including checking 35 waste rings and measuring the impact of the mine on local water quality and the environment more broadly.
As such, we looked at options to reduce the salinity and deconcentrate the water to make sure that mining over the next few decades will not limit the water supply. We piloted a Multiflo™ sludge-clarifier technology which offers an efficient process for the removal of TSS, Colour, Algae, and heavy metal co-precipitates in wastewater, as well as the Brine Deconcentration technology which converts the super saturated salts of Reverse Osmosis process reject into useful by-products of Gypsum and Magnesium Hydroxide.
Meeting the Needs of Our Partner
The mining industry consistently faces the challenge of Increasingly scarce resources and environmental responsibility. As the grade and quality of deposits decline, the mining industry is forced to use more resources to extract the same amount of ore. Water, energy, and waste management combine to form a significant expense line for mines, which are often located in remote areas and where the waste generated is potentially hazardous.
In addition, stricter environmental regulations and increased public pressure make it difficult for mining companies to maintain their operating permits. They need to develop strategies to limit their exposure to risks and implement best practices to cut clean-up costs. It is also by reducing the impact of mining on land and the environment, and by improving cooperation with local communities, that mining industries can ensure sustainable acceptability and therefore the productivity of their business. As such:
• We improve productivity by treating water for production process requirements;
• We manage environmental risks by treating contaminated water to achieve water quality suitable for reuse or safe discharge into the environment;
• We seek to add value to the bottom line by treating sludge streams to recover suspended and dissolved constituents;
• We secure high-quality drinking water, even at remote mining sites;
• We have robust and reliable equipment requiring minimal unplanned maintenance;
• We cope with production peaks while complying with stringent regulations;
• We guarantee long-term efficiency and cost control through operations services.
Our solutions to combine productivity and responsibility
Thanks to our understanding of the unique requirements of mine operations and our worldwide expertise in mine water issues, we focus on system performance, environmental requirements, and long-term cost-effectiveness to meet the demanding reliability, safety, and quality standards of the mining industry.
We Deliver Value in Many Ways
• Improving operational cost-efficiency;
• Improving yield to support competitiveness;
• Securing the license to operate;
• Responsibly planning for Closure.
Benefits to the Mine
• Circular economy from the mine effluent with by-products recovery at various stages of the process. This mitigates the environmental risks as well as generates long-term local jobs for the surrounding communities and brings the potential to valorize all by-products on-site or with local third parties;
• Significant reduction of contaminated solids to be stored in tailing dams or stack pilled reducing the environmental legacy of the site;
• Salt deconcentration across the whole hydraulic scheme, leading to reduced operational costs, whilst improving infrastructure availability and water recovery.

Continuous implementation of the tenyear plan is aligned with the business sustainability performance of Ghana’s Obusai mine, with the aim to establish sustainable businesses that support livelihoods long after the life of the mine.
Redevelopment at Obuasi
Established in South Africa (where it is still headquartered) in 1998, AngloGold Ashanti is one of the largest global gold mining companies.
The business, which remains an independent gold producer, with no dominant investor and a diverse spread of shareholders, has assets in Africa, America and Australia. At the close of 2022, the business announced a total gold mineral resource of 131.4Moz, including a 30.4Moz Mineral Reserve.
The firm's Obuasi mine, which is located in Ghana’s Ashanti region, started operating in 1987. The operation underwent a feasibility study in 2017 which indicated a strong technical and economic viability which anticipated a 20 year life of mine.

In 2018, approval was received to proceed with its redevelopment project. The project is now in Phase 3, which will develop the infrastructure necessary to support the planned ramp up in production to 5,000tpd by the end of 2023.
As part of the redevelopment, AngloGold Ashanti announced a joint venture in 2018, highlighting its commitment to increasing meaningful local participation in the organisation’s work.
The $375 million, five-year underground mining contract will be undertaken by Underground Mining Alliance Limited (UMA), a joint venture between Australia’s African Underground Mining Services (AUMS) and Accra-based Rocksure International, a wholly owned Ghanaian mining contractor. The project will help develop mechanised, underground mining expertise within Ghana’s local mining and engineering sectors. Around 550 people, predominantly Ghanaians, will be employed and trained by the contractors for the duration of the contract, allowing for the transfer of knowledge and skills.

Where Passion, Skills & Experience Intersect
When the love for machines and knowledge of mining, meets with the experience of selling heavy-duty equipment, great things are possible. Such is the story of Quantum LC and its Founder, Joseph Nii Kwatey Titus-Glover. From infancy, Joseph has been fascinated by machines. As a very young child he pulled apart and reassembled his toys. Needless to say he was unable to assemble some of them which often led to deep frustration. He however dreamt of owning a lot of “big machines” in future. This passion was at the core of his decision to study science in Achimota School. As the years went by the hope from his father that he would take after him as a Medical Doctor clashed with his passion for machines. It was simply by a twist of fate that he finally took the path towards Engineering by selecting Mathematics instead of Biology in sixth form at Presec Legon. The path to Engineering was thus sealed.
Engineering school was a period for refining Joseph’s dreams. Well before graduation he knew without a shadow of doubt that he would develop a career in the heavy-duty equipment industry. The workings of internal combustion engines and the moving parts of heavy equipment had all been mastered before he started out in Sales and After-sales service of Heavy-duty VOLVO equipment at Mullti-Tech Services as a recently-graduated Mining Engineer. Under the leadership of his two directors of Multi-Tech Services, Mr. Jojo Maxwel Todd and Mr. Angelo Massimino, and mentorship of Mr. Hans Fischer from Volvo Construction Equipment in Sweden, he grew VOLVO’s share of the heavy-duty equipment market in Ghana to 20% over a few short years. So outstanding was his performance that he was appointed as a Director
of Operations over Ghana, Benin and Liberia in no time. The successes he chalked constituted the spark to start his first Mining Support Service company MAXMASS Limited with his Directors at Multi-Tech Services and thereafter formed his own company in the heavy-duty equipment rental industry. Quantum LC was thus established in Joseph’s house, from the dining table in the living room where he would sit every morning with his initial team of 4 (four) employees developing growth strategies. The company grew in leaps and bounds, increasing its fleet from just 3(three) rental units to 14 (fourteen) units within two years. A true visionary, Joseph always had his eyes on the ultimate price; to engage in mining as a mining contractor. Quantum LC went ahead to register with the Minerals Commission as a mining contractor, a mining support service company, and has since completed several major projects in the Mining industry in Ghana.
Growth through partnerships was a mantra developed in the early days. This led to active collaborations with other international companies in mining and construction like WBHO and MotaEngil to develop more in-house capacity.
The initial four-man team has metamorphosed into a fully-fledged organization with over 300 (three hundred) employees working in various disciplines on several project sites in Ghana using several heavy-duty equipment owned by the company. The vision is sacred; to become a major player in the Mining industry in Ghana. The Founder & CEO recently averred, “If the trajectory of the company is anything to go by, we are on course to achieve our vision and that gives me great satisfaction and our next mission is to own a Quantum Mine”. To where we have reached in the Mining Sector, WE Just Thank God-JTG

On 21st September 2023, Prime Minister of the UK Rishi Sunak announced a U-turn on climate commitments, including those around the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.
In his address, Sunak stated the government will delay its phase out of the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by five years to 2035.
So, what does that mean for those hoping to see more sustainability on Britain’s roads now?
As fate would have it, Business Enquirer had the opportunity to speak with the CEO of one of the UK’s leading experts in vehicle recycling the day after Sunak’s announcement. Fourth generation owner of the family business, Marc Trent, told Business Enquirer that all is not lost.
Breaking the Mould
Established in 1926, originally focussed on scrap metal, Charles Trent are one of UK’s largest and longest established car breakers. Most often, cars are broken down once they reach end-of-life, either due to age or when written off by an insurer.
The business, which currently employs 250 people across two sites, typically collects, stores, processes, and re-sells near to 50,000 vehicles per year. In turn, this allows the business to produce nearly 200,000 parts annually & stock over 80,000 used car parts, ready to give roadworthy vehicles a new lease of life.
CHARLES TRENT
CEO of Charles Trent shares how you can drive green without the charging point
Inaugurated in a time where vehicles were far and few between (and initially focussed on scrap metal), Charles Trent has continued to innovate.
“We have broken the mould in how cars are recycled,” explained Marc, “we have developed a reverse production line, which is an efficient process and keeps the integrity of the parts”.
With this method, Charles Trent can break down around 500 cars a week, in comparison to the traditional car recycler which can break just 10% of that.
Now, the business has its sights set on a big target, of 10 X that figure to 5000 cars a week.
Supporting this vision, Charles Trent opened its first-of-a-kind in the UK reverse production facility. The 100,000 square foot facility, which opened in Poole in 2022, enables the business to recover fully tested car parts faster than ever seen before.
Meanwhile, certain parts not suitable for resale can be recovered for remanufacture, including higher-grade scrap commodities such as aluminium & copper wiring harnesses. All of this goes towards the EU’s recycling target of 95% set in 2002, with Charles Trent achieving 96.3% at the last audit.
“The facility was built to be operational 24 hours a day. We are now in the third

Warehouse technology driving accelerated growth at family firm
One of the UK’s top three car automotive recycling companies is powering forwards with its ambitious five-year growth plan thanks to timely investment in a digital warehouse management system (WMS).
Since installing SnapFulfil WMS, Charles Trent Ltd, based in Poole, Dorset has doubled its stock holding with over 3,000 ‘green’ parts being processed every week without increasing head count. And with operations much more streamlined, efficient, productive, and profitable, the company is on track to achieve its predicted turnover of £250 million by 2026.
The family-owned business, which was founded in 1926, has continued to thrive thanks to its forward-thinking attitude to technology. Influenced by Amazon, the firm’s high-tech operation is the only one of its kind in the UK where you can source a particular part online and then have it delivered next day.
Having invested £4 million in a 30,000 sq. ft. distribution centre (DC) in nearby Holton Heath at the start of 2021, Charles Trent realised that an architecturally robust, highly flexible, and easily configurable WMS needed to be part of their new digital infrastructure. The award-winning SnapFulfil cloud suite was selected because of its reputation for delivering strong value through rapid ROI, industry-leading deployment speed and low total cost of ownership (TCO).
Charles Trent’s Distribution & Operations Manager, Matt Groves, said: “Our labourintensive paper picking process wasn’t geared up for quick expansion and was open to human error, with returns on wrong products and parts going missing a particular problem, with no validation of picking. Drives highly accurate storage “Almost
immediately, SnapFulfil was able to drive highly accurate storage, putaway, picking and packing via the RF scanners and massively improve visibility for all parties across some unique and diverse product ranges.”
Subsequently, the storage and distribution transition from the old Poole HQ warehouse (18,000 sq. ft. over three levels) and processes to the digitally-driven Holten Heath DC - which is 14 levels high and has a top picking height of 13 metres and state-of-the-art rackingwas seamless. There’s also perfect platform alignment with the company’s in house Pinnacle system (specifically for car parts and salvage).
Furthermore, the implementation was largely managed remotely, driving down costs and time to go live. SnapFulfil excels in creative, digital onboarding, while producing the same positive results in adoption and use as traditional on-site engagement, but with associated economies of scale.
The more recent Poole distribution centre, which opened in August 2022, followed this successful model – but with more warehousing space of 45,000 sq. ft. – and with fulfilment, production and quality control all under one roof, it’s an even more impressive facility totalling 100,000 sq. ft.
Plans are now in place for Holton Heath and Poole to increase operations from 18 hours daily across two shifts to 24/5, which will massively increase the company’s order processing capacity, demonstrating the flexibility and efficiency gains of SnapFulfil.
Full traceability
Groves added: “We used to have about 2-3 orders per day going astray within the old system, but we achieve very close to 100 per cent accuracy with SnapFulfil. Full traceability like this is a huge advantage in a variable business such as ours.
56 Issue 118 · Business Enquirer Magazine
“It’s about tempo and efficiency, because in receiving goods staff can scan, process, and have them on the shelf in next-to-no-time – and handle 30 at a time without being label reliant. SnapFulfil is easy to pick up and use for new operatives, with new staff at both DCs quickly up-tospeed and taking advantage of task grouping for optimum picking and sequencing.
“I also like how SnapFulfil - even from a long list of locations - identifies the part by the prefix of the vehicle class, as this means it can be used by our staff in both DCs, simultaneously, and at any point in our operations.
“It’s a smooth and reliable system overall, plus I like the visual aspect and colour coding of the HTML5 ‘tile’ dashboard, which is dynamic, intuitive, engaging and easy to follow, plus really improves the planning and metrics side of the job.”
Charles Trent now acknowledges it has the very latest in WMS technology to help realise plans and is confident its two distribution centres are unique in the UK.
The business is looking to open another four new recycling and distribution centre sites by 2026, in major population centres across the UK – and SnapFulfil’s kitting functionality especially can support rapid scaling of fulfilment processes, as well as quick succession of multiple site facility rollouts, as they have already benefitted from with the bigger Poole DC onboarding.
Next generation warehouse orchestration
The SnapFulfil WMS by Synergy Logistics is renowned for being high tech in terms of functionality, but what further sets them apart is a new software solution that orchestrates all automation devices and robotic systems within the warehouse from one convenient platform.
As a multiagent, rather than just a point solution, SnapControl brings a more uniform approach to automation and is also completely device and technology agnostic.
It orchestrates the prioritisation of warehouse inbound, outbound and replenishment workflows, automatically allocates tasks, evaluates which robotic devices and technologies best match specific operations, and enables data capture to assess the value each device yields.
Importantly, the solution allows for buffer creation to delay tasks, exception management, and real-time switchover if devices are damaged or unavailable. All these capabilities help to avoid subsystems for AMR deployments, which otherwise increase cost, complexity, and time constraints.
Most interestingly, it uniquely promotes bi-directional messaging between the WMS and remote warehouse devices, so human decision makers can have a ‘conversation’ with the technology, enabling the most crucial and efficient DC decisions to be made automatically.
In today’s especially challenging times the ability to rapidly augment and orchestrate your technology investments, without unnecessary service fees, has never been more important. It’s now mission critical to harness control with 24/7 visibility from one centralised system.

week of trialling a 24/5 operation and it’s showing positive results,” shared Marc, “its supporting demand and allowing us to supply parts around the clock”.
Now, the car breaker plans to expand this blueprint across the country to achieve its ambitious but achievable target.
“Over the next five years we’re planning to add another five of these facilities across the UK in strategic locations. Each will employ around 300 staff, increasing our headcount by over 600%, which will offer a great employment opportunity across the country,” added Marc.
Driving Growth
For those looking to replace a part in their car, it's important to be aware of either unregulated or illegal car breakers. Ensuring a safe and satisfied experience, Charles Trent are fully licensed and regulated, and are members of the Vehicle Recycling Association and e2e Total Loss Vehicle Management.
"Charles Trent were one of the first companies in the UK to achieve VRA accreditation. The accreditation is all about the journey of the part from the car to the shelf which includes quality, testing & provenance,” shared Marc.
“With almost 100 years in the industry, we are seen as one of the most trusted vehicle recyclers, and this has been one of the driving factors behind our growth,” he added.
Both the UK and EU fall within the 2002 EU end of life vehicle directive (ELV Directive), which sets clear targets for ELVs and their components. It also sets out minimum standards for operating sites such as impermeable surfaces.
The directive is largely aimed at the operator known as an authorised treatment facility (ATF) and the car manufacturers under producer responsibility. Over 21 years the recycling target for all ATF’s has increased from 75% to 95%. In 2023 the directive has been

revised significantly & put forward for consultation.
Marc said, if implemented, this will place more responsibility onto the car manufacturers as it clearly mentions the circular economy and the circularity of parts & materials that arise from ELV.
“This can only work viably through the facilities & processes we have developed,” he said.
Other factors are at play in Charles Trent’s growth too, with Marc witnessing a cost increase of new spare parts at around 10% in the last year. Alongside this, consumers are keeping their cars for longer due to a slower supply chain of new vehicles, therefore needing to extend the life of their existing vehicle.
Business Enquirer Magazine · Issue 118 59
“We’ve been working with Charles Trent for two years and their commitment to best practice when it comes to waste tyre recycling is second to none. Shared knowledge in this field has helped our relationship develop industry leading handling and processing.”
Henry
Hodge, Managing Director, Black-Ram Recycling Ltd
“Not only do we provide an easy to access solution with parts available 24/7 online and shipped worldwide, we are more cost effective, and of course sustainable,” Marc explained.
Realising that the business must do more than offer a sustainable product, Charles Trent also runs its facilities entirely from solar power.
“Not only are we more efficient than some of our competitors with our unique lean reverse production line, we are a business offering a green solution from a green operation,” said Marc.
The Next Generation of Breakers
Joining the business in the 1980’s, Marc now owns the business alongside his two brothers Neil and Jonathan.
“We spent our childhood working at the family business, at the weekends and in the school holidays, it was a natural progression for us to follow in our father, grandfather and great-grandfather’s footsteps,” shared Marc, “Not only are we family, but our colleagues are family too - a big family”.
But what about the next generation? With six children beneath the three brothers, two are set to follow in their footsteps and join the family business.
“It’s never been forced upon any of the family to take on roles, but there are some fantastic opportunities at Charles Trent, for any of our staff,” said Marc, highlighting that the newest facility in Poole sees the employment of qualified line operators and mechanics.
Ultimately, as long as there are vehicles being manufactured, there are many more years left for the historic car breakers. And, whilst the bulk of the vehicles it sees down its line are petrol, diesel and hybrid, Charles Trent is fully equipped to recycle EVs, too - even if it is some time until they dominate our roads.

THE INDUSTRY LEADER UNLOCKING POSSIBILITIES IN SUSTAINABLE CHEMICALS
Kraton, one of the world leaders in innovating and manufacturing polymers and biobased pine chemicals, is on a mission to “unlock the possibilities of sustainable chemicals,” says Kraton CEO Marcello Boldrini, speaking to Business Enquirer.
Originating as a division of Shell, Kraton entered its first significant growth chapter in 2016 by acquiring Arizona Chemicals, then in 2022 by uniting with DL Chemicals, a global petrochemicals company based in South Korea. This strategic partnership expanded its reach and generated synergistic advantages, strategically positioning the business for the future. The transformative impact of this collaboration is poised to propel Kraton to unprecedented levels.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability
With its vast range of polymers and pine chemicals used in products at every touch point of daily life, Kraton recognises its significant role in promoting sustainability.
Kraton not only evaluates the environmental impact of its business operations but also supports customers by offering innovative, sustainable solutions while assessing how its supply chain impacts these efforts.
“We take a holistic approach to sustainability, ensuring that our entire value chain is implementing sustainable measures,” shared Marcello, highlighting that Kraton is an active member of Together for Sustainability (TfS).
TfS is a global procurement-driven initiative to assess and improve chemical companies’ and suppliers’ sustainability management practices. As part of the programme, Kraton have been involved in the development of the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Guideline.
“The PCF Guideline will help Kraton further its supplier engagement programme and improve supplier environmental performance and practices, with product-level emissions transparency for identifying, tracking, and reducing Scope 3 GHG emissions,” Marcello added.
Kraton’s key focus is to develop innovative, customised solutions which enhance the sustainability of its customer’s products and processes.
Recently, the business has launched groundbreaking solutions to support the biobased and circular economies.
“For the construction and roadway sectors we have developed a polymer which is more efficient, offers better performance and has a reduced carbon footprint compared to other alternatives. This means customers can use less, reduce costs and increase sustainability,” shared Marcello.
66 Issue 118 · Business Enquirer Magazine
Additionally, Kraton has introduced an innovative technology known as REvolutionTM. This scalable, nextgeneration solution is specifically designed to enhance colour quality, reduce odour, and ensure stability. These characteristics make it a compelling alternative to fossil-based products in the Adhesives and Road Marking sectors.
“Kraton understands sustainability is not a destination but an ongoing journey. As we continue to develop sustainable solutions, we are firmly committed to leading the way in innovation, transparency, and accountability,” said Marcello.
Kraton has recently been awarded for its sustainability efforts, ranking in the top 1% of businesses in the EcoVadis Platinum Sustainability Rating for the third consecutive year.
Diversity Driving Innovation
Marcello shared with Business Enquirer the importance that diversity plays in both business sustainability, growth, and innovation.
Kraton, which employs 1,854 people globally across its 27 sites (made up of six regional headquarters, eight innovation centres, and 13 manufacturing facilities), reported in its 2022 sustainability report that 55% of new hires were considered diverse.
“Diversity is crucial to innovation, as you need to have a wealth of minds, knowledge, and experience to innovate,” said Marcello, “I have witnessed how diversity fosters improved performance, making a compelling business case for it alongside its ethical significance”.
Over the years, the business has developed robust learning and development programmes and streamlined HR processes. These initiatives empower its colleagues to actively engage with the organisation, grow, and advance through a combination of experiential learning and structured developmental opportunities.

“As a global business we foster inclusion, and ensure that we listen and work closely to the communities we work within,” said Marcello.
With over 30 years’ experience in the chemical industry, Marcello has had the opportunity to travel the world, taking on leadership roles in Asia, Europe, and America.
“When I joined Kraton I ensured they represented my core values such as culture and diversity. There is clear synergy between myself and the business,” Marcello shared, “I’ve been offered a unique opportunity with Kraton which has allowed me to be involved in the shaping and transformation for our culture, on which the business’ success depends”.
A Robust Pipeline of Innovation
As the inventor of the first commercially viable styrenic block copolymer (SBC) more than 65 years ago, and with over 100 years of producing Pine Chemicals, sustainable innovation is an integral part of Kraton’s DNA.
With that in mind, Marcello acknowledges the numerous benefits that modern technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) can bring to Kraton.
“AI integration not only elevates our job performance and efficiency but also expedites our time-to-market. In light of the continual advancements in AI, it represents a crucial stride towards maintaining competitiveness and fostering innovation,” he shared.
He further emphasised, “AI presents significant potential for data analysis, expediting innovation, and enhancing operational excellence. However, it’s essential to recognise that the skills and talent of our people remain irreplaceable. The key is to integrate AI alongside our human resources, not to replace them.”

over 200 R&D team members, has a robust pipeline of innovative solutions coming to market.
Innovation drives the organisation’s dedication to advancing a biobased and circular economy, where they aim to lead the path to efficient renewable resource utilisation, waste reduction, and sustainable operations. Further, sustainability is key in Kraton’s product designs, making a positive difference in various sectors, including medical solutions, automotive, coatings, road markings, cosmetics, and more.
Looking to the future, Marcello and his team have identified four key areas for the continued growth and business longevity of Kraton.
Firstly, sustainability stands as a cornerstone of Kraton’s success, underlining its commitment to a better future.
“For Kraton, embracing sustainability is paramount because it not only aligns with our ethical responsibility but also fosters innovation, resilience, and longterm viability. By integrating sustainable practices across our operations, we safeguard the environment, engage stakeholders, and ensure enduring prosperity for both our business and the communities we serve,” said Marcelllo.
The importance of organisational excellence cannot be overstated, either. It serves as a key pillar for the organisation’s long-term success and sustainability. By streamlining processes, optimising resource allocation, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, Kraton aims to bolster its competitive edge and indirectly contribute to sustainability efforts.
“It’s a strategic synergy where operational excellence aligns seamlessly with our commitment to a more sustainable and prosperous future,” added Marcello.
In addition, the business’ will continue with its steadfast commitment to further develop its diversity and inclusion measures. These efforts are aimed at nurturing an environment that fosters collaborative innovation, ensuring all voices are heard and valued in pursuit of excellence.
Finally, and at its heart, Kraton will continue to innovate.
“We firmly believe that innovation is the sole pathway to delivering superior solutions for our customers and maintaining a competitive edge within the industry,” closed Marcello.

GROWTH MINDSET LEADER ENSURING BUSINESS OPTIMISATION AT SLOVENIA’S LARGEST FOUNDRY
With 18 years experience in the financial sector, prior to joining Livar, Rok successfully advised on the restructure and financial stabilisation of Slovenia’s largest merchant.
In 4 years, CEO Rok has taken Livar from a business with a two out of ten financial stability rating, to a thriving company valued within the top 7% in Slovenia.
Joining the business in 2018 (taking on the role of CEO in 2019 alongside a new management team), Rok oversaw the implementation of Livar’s new strategy - The Roadmap to 2020+, including the business’ financial restructure.
During the financial restructure of Livar, which specialises in the production of grey and ductile cast iron with mechanical processing, the business achieved financial rehabilitation and gained new shareholders. The majority owners became financial creditors from the AnaCap Financial Partners group (currently Veld Capital Partners).
Whilst the restructure saw improved operational efficiency for Livar, one of the greatest achievements of this business turnaround was the saving of 600 jobs.

Unlocking Excellence: The Foseco-Livar Partnership
In the dynamic world of industrial partnerships, one stands out as a beacon of enduring collaboration and innovation. The partnership between Foseco and Livar isn’t merely a union of two companies; it’s a testament to the power of trust, expertise, and a shared commitment to advancing the foundry industry. Foseco and Livar boast a long-standing history of cooperation that has matured into a strategic partnership. This partnership was forged through the crucible of trust and fortified by the bonds of collaboration among our commercial, technical, and management teams. Over the years, we’ve cultivated multi-level relationships, cementing our dedication to mutual growth and success.
The Genesis of Cooperation
We started developing our partnership about three years ago when Foseco and Livar both embarked on ambitious journeys to reshape their business strategies. Livar’s forward-thinking leadership attracted innovative young talents, while Foseco underwent a comprehensive transformation in management, commercial operations, and technology in the region.Livar’s forward-thinking leadership attracted innovative young talents, while Foseco underwent a comprehensive transformation in management, commercial operations, and technology in the region. Foseco brings unmatched technical expertise to the partnership. Our specialists are always ready to engage with customers, understand their challenges, and propose innovative solutions that add value. In a market flooded with suppliers offering competitive prices, we stand out not just for our products but for our problem-solving abilities and process improvements. Conversely, Livar prioritises casting quality, process optimization, and sustainability. The synergy between our teams is rooted in the trust we’ve built and our shared commitment to challenging the status quo. Effective communication and alignment of goals are crucial for any partnership, especially when dealing with differences in organisational cultures and structures. The Foseco-Livar partnership thrives on open communication channels, enabling us to adapt, grow, and tackle challenges together.
The Journey of Innovation
In our recent collaborations, we’ve significantly improved quality, productivity, and energy efficiency. This includes reducing weight and postcasting operations, resulting in energy and labour savings. Customers now have the flexibility to conserve energy by melting less metal or produce more high-quality castings with the same amount of metal. We’ve also made remarkable enhancements in casting quality, especially in surface finish. Livar’s commitment to innovation shines through their openness to new products, like Foseco’s KALPUR direct pouring solutions, even in unconventional applications. This forward-thinking approach exemplifies our dedication to pushing the boundaries of traditional foundry practices, propelling the industry forward. Our partnership thrives on flexibility and adaptability. We’ve navigated various challenges, from pandemic disruptions to pricing volatility and raw material shortages, all while reinforcing our trust and effective communication, which has made us even stronger.
Building and Sustaining Trust
Trust is a currency that’s hard to earn and easy to lose. From day one, our commitment to openness and problem-solving has been unwavering. Through thick and thin, including the trials of Covid-19, volatile pricing, and material shortages, our trust-driven approach has fortified our partnership. With market dynamics and industry trends in constant flux, we remain resilient and adaptable by continually generating and implementing projects that define new optimization ideas and create value. Leadership and management play pivotal roles in steering our partnership forward. The synergy between leaders from both companies ensures alignment with our shared goals and vision.
A Commitment to Ongoing Value Creation
Our commitment to value creation is perpetual. We don’t rest on our laurels after improving a process; instead, we continuously seek new avenues for optimization and value creation. Collaborating with our customers to benchmark existing practices against our solutions allows us to quantify the value created. In a global business landscape, differences in cultures, time zones, and geographies can pose challenges. However, as a global company with local faces, we have the flexibility to adapt to local needs while drawing on a vast network of colleagues for support.
Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility
Both Foseco and Livar understand the importance of sustainability and corporate social responsibility in the foundry industry. We actively work

On the Path to Excellence
With the business now financially stable, Rok and his team have set their sights on a new vision: the Roadmap to Excellence 2025.
Ultimately, Livar aims to become the first choice supplier for casting production, machining and assembly solutions, empowered by sustainable centre of excellence and highly motivated team. Livar’s strategy is supported by five pillars: sustainability, people, clients, production, and processes.
“The strategy is powered by innovation and culture. Initiatives in our Roadmap to Excellence focus on adding value to clients, improving efficiencies, and reducing fixed costs,” shared Rok.
A business case has already been presented to expand machining capacity at the foundries by 30% to add value as well as plans to consolidate its operations into a single facility to improve efficiency.
When it comes to innovation, it is clear that AI will have an exciting impact on Livar, with the business already being supported by solutions in 3D modelling to help it to produce optimal casting results.
“I foresee that AI will benefit the business by offering more robust data tracking which will help to increase productivity,” shared Rok, “it will also help us to make quicker decisions and enable more precise inventory management. This will likely improve the business in terms of efficiency and cost savings, and will be another value add for clients”.

here and now.
Supported by the Norwegian financial mechanism, Livar has participated its CIRCI project, backed by the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The circular economy initiative has seen the implementation of an innovative new process which enables the reuse of specific waste materials from the foundry and machining production into a new product.
“We are now embarking on the final production tests. Initial results are promising and are indicating potential savings of €1 million. We are proud of this project and we strongly believe that the predicted savings will be delivered,” shared Rok.
At its core, Livar has been a part of the circular economy for 70 years, with its business collecting and recycling metal waste and moulding it into a new function. However, with better technology it now has a clearer vision and further opportunity to measure and report on sustainability outcomes.

Additionally it aims to increase the average salary in the company by 20%, and increase training resources by 20%, whilst reducing sick leave by 10%.
“We need to become more courageous and more ambitious with our goals. Now is the time for Livar to become more strategic and fearless about protecting our environment, people and communities, whilst creating the highest value in our field of operation,” added Rok.

Powering new age banks with decisive business intelligence
The digital era has ushered in a world of instant connectivity and incredible opportunities. There never has been a better time for banks and financial institutions to truly prosper. The fastest growing financial institutions today are the ones that bank on intelligence to drive innovation.
Transforming banking data into profitable intelligence needs data analytics built precisely around banking operations and processes. This is where Sunoida Solutions is setting new benchmarks with groundbreaking solutions built by bankers for bankers. Sunoida is the leading provider of Banking Revenue Assurance, Banking BI and RegTech & SupTech Solutions. Sunoida’s best-selling Vision Solutions help banks drive intelligence powered by their data.
Revenue leakage has for long been a bane for banks globally and remains largely unaddressed by most banks thereby negatively affecting their customer experience and profitability. Revenue leakage occurs in banks due to a number of common factors such as increasing number of channels, complex pricing rules, operational and human errors, unauthorized discounts, frauds, missing or unpriced transactions, process failures and more.
Sunoida’s best-selling Vision Revenue Assurance solution is built to prevent and plug revenue leakages across the customer engagement cycle in a systematic and automated manner, instantly boosting the banks profits, increasing operational efficiencies and enhancing customer experience. A scalable and highly adaptive solution, it helps banks gain full visibility and control over every single customer transaction and provides variance analytics comparing actual income and the expected income with detailed drill-down reports and easy to view dashboards.
Today’s banks generate humongous amount of data. With only a fraction of it being actually analysed, banks unwittingly lose vital insights they could otherwise profit from. Sunoida’s Vision Banking Business Intelligence (BI) bridges this gap by consolidating data from multiple sources to create and deliver highly valuable dashboards, analytics and actionable insights for all stakeholders across the bank for faster decision making and also achieving regulatory compliance. Vision Banking BI helps banks identify business patterns, foresee risks, and resolve issues in real-time.
Central Banks and regulatory bodies too are adopting new age technology to drive faster and more effective risk-based supervision. Sunoida’s Vision RegTech and SupTech solution is a globally acclaimed solution that has been benchmarked and applauded by many global institutions including the World Bank Group, BIS, UNCDF, FSA Japan amongst others.
Sunoida’s ground-breaking Vision Automated Data Flow (ADF) & XBRL based EDW & BI solution is the world’s first successfully deployed solution that allows regulators to automatically pull granular data from all financial institutions’ systems directly on a daily or near real time basis. It eliminates errors, inaccuracies, misrepresentations and compliance issues associated with manual reporting while also saving resources and costs. Highly accurate reports and analytical dashboards help regulators predict trends across regions and sectors.
Sunoida continues to supercharge the world’s fastest growing banks with real-time intelligence powered by today’s data and tomorrow’s possibilities.
“We have seen amazing results at banks that have deployed our Vision suite of solutions. Our Revenue Assurance solution provides one of the most tangible ROI in many cases upto 7x within few weeks of deployment enabling banks to improve their customer experience and profitability at the same time!”

PHARMACEUTICAL INNOVATION EXPANDS INTO THE US WITH FEMALE CEO
When it comes to business sustainability, our initial thoughts often revolve around improving organization efficiency, improving financial performance, and implementing a carbon reduction strategy.
However, in the UN’s SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), the intergovernmental organization has recognized the need for gender parity within business.
“Gender is woven throughout the SDGs as it sits at the intersection of economic, social and environmental issues”, states the UN. “It has its own Goal, SDG 5—with the ambition of achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls— and is mentioned explicitly in 10 of the other Goals”.
But, in 2023, are we close to achieving gender parity in leadership? A recent report by Forbes implies we have a long way to go - five generations, in fact.

The Global Gender Gap report published by the World Economic Forum highlights that at the current rate of progress, the global economy won’t see gender parity for 131 years. It reports a further stark figure of 169 years to close the Economic Participation and Opportunity gender gap.
President of PharmaBlock (USA), Dr. Jing Li, spoke to Business Enquirer about her views on Women in Leadership.
“We need to encourage women to fearlessly embrace new opportunities, whether it’s the beginning of their career journey or taking on a c-suite role,” she said.
She herself is an example of what happens when you use fear as a motivator, rather than a deterrent.
Having spent eight and a half years as an Associate Principal Scientist at Merck, Jing was offered the opportunity to join PharmaBlock.
“Whilst it was a fantastic opportunity, I was happy at Merck so it felt like a big risk to move businesses. Speaking with my daughter, she said it sounded “exciting”. It was my responsibility to show my daughter that we mustn't let fear get in the way of opportunity,” shared Jing.
This teachable moment is something that Jing aims to instil in business as well as around the dinner table.
“The leadership traits that women naturally possess are undervalued by business world,” she said, “I believe the strengths we offer include softer skills which can help to create the

right environment for colleagues to be nurtured, motivated, and developed”.
Jing finds fulfilment in her role as President, USA, not only through PharmaBlock’s contribution to the pharmaceutical industry, but also by cultivating a work environment where colleagues can realise their full potential.
Speaking of PharmaBlock in the USA, Jing feels that she and her team have fostered an inclusive and collaborative culture where colleagues genuinely feel that they have ownership in both the business outputs and their roles.
“By ensuring that our vision is clearly communicated, colleagues understand their purpose and have a sense of meaning in what they do. The opportunities at PharmaBlock are unlimited,” she added.
PharmaBlock is now a fully integrated CRDMO (contracted research, development, and manufacturing organization) with clear vision: focus on innovative chemistry and low-carbon manufacturing, bring sustainable and efficient solutions to its clients, ultimately supporting partners in bringing medicines to those in need more quickly.
When the business was first established in China in 2008, it began by designing and synthesizing a large collection of rationally designed, high-quality, and structurally diversified chemicals, known as building blocks in the field of drug R & D.
These building blocks are increasingly adopted by global drug hunters to enrich structure diversity, improve compound performance, expand patent space, and eventually accelerate drug discovery projects.
Over the years, PharmaBlock has accumulated expertise and earned the trust of its customers, allowing it to expand its business scope beyond being a building block supplier. It now serves as a comprehensive service and solution partner, supporting global pharmaceutical

and biotech companies throughout the drug R&D and commercial processes.
Enabled by sustainable strategies, PharmaBlock has gained a reputation as a quality partner for the development and manufacturing of pharmaceutical intermediates, drug substances, and drug products, all the while achieving cost efficiency and a greener footprint.
PharmaBlock team in China and US are focusing on four key areas of sustainability, with of course, one of those being People.
“Supporting diversity and inclusivity is key to sustainability,” said Jing. “It creates a collaborative and innovative work environment and has profound impact on team motivation, productivity and longterm business success.”
Supply chain resilience is an integral part of its sustainability strategy, as PharmaBlock considers not only its own supply chain, but also the role it plays in its client’s supply chain. “We have identified the supply chain values we consider to be crucial and have developed a robust way of working. We implement a supplier development program to enhance sustainability awareness and operations.” explained Jing.
Another element to its sustainability strategy is geographic diversity, ensuring accessibility to its clients - which over time has included almost all of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies as well as hundreds of small to medium biotech companies across the globe.
As part of its geographic expansion efforts, PharmaBlock launched a new R&D facility in Pennsylvania, USA in March 2023. This brings the business footprint to five facilities, three in China and two in the USA. “We intend to further expand our presence in the USA as we see significant demand for drug development and manufacturing in the country,” shared Jing.
In addition, PharmaBlock is dedicated
Business Enquirer Magazine · Issue 118 113 PHARMABLOCK
to fostering innovation. Its mission to “innovative chemistry for a better future” highlights that chemistry innovation can provide more effective, safer, easier to use, and more accessible products and services for the future; it is essential to do the right things at the very beginning, including addressing safety, environmental, and quality challenges, to enable greener and more efficient R&D and manufacturing processes.
With this mission at its core, PharmaBlock are pioneers in introducing continuous flow technology and biocatalysis into its manufacturing process. Whilst this concept has long been used in the petroleum industry, it is a new innovation for the pharma-chemical space. The new technologies are capable of overcoming the challenges that traditional chemistry processes typically struggle with.
“We are proud to have advanced innovative technologies like continuous flow manufacturing and biocatalysis for the pharmaceutical space. It brings many benefits to clients including scalability, safety, improved quality, reduced waste, cost saving and speed,” said Jing.
By designing and assembling manufacturing-scale equipment capable
of achieving yearly outputs of hundreds of metric tons, what used to take months to produce can now be accomplished in a matter of two to three weeks, with lower cost, reduced energy usage, and less waste. The company is even planning to expand its impact by commercializing some of its technologies and equipment, making their innovative technology accessible to the entire industry.
PharmaBlock’s commitment to innovation and sustainability has won several accolades recently, such as 2023 CMO Excellence in Green Chemistry Award by ACS and Top CDMOs by Pharma Tech Outlook. Additionally, PharmaBlock's sustainability practices and experiences have been documented in the recently released book "Sustainability Leaders" by DCAT (the Drug, Chemical & Associated Technologies Association), an association for companies involved in the Bio/ Pharmaceutical manufacturing value chain.
“When there is no solution available, we innovate,” shared Jing, “the innovation never stops as well as our never-ending pursuit for excellence.”.

NEW AIRPORT SUPPORTS POST-PANDEMIC TOURISM RECOVERY IN THE CARIBBEAN
In 2022, visitors to St. Vincent and the Grenadines increased by 160,000 to around 221,0001. Whilst this is not the highest footfall that the Caribbean Island has seen in the last five years (peaking at 404,000 in 2019), it is seeing positive post-pandemic recovery.
In response to the growing air traffic needs which St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ E.T. Joshua Airport could no longer accommodate, Argyle International Airport (AIA) was commissioned in February 2017.
Built to handle 1.2 million passengers per year, the airport, which is the newest airport in the Eastern Caribbean, boasts a 9000 foot long runway and an expansive apron area, which facilitates aircraft ranging from twin otters to large commercial jets.
Five times the size of its predecessor, AIA is considered one of the country’s most important infrastructure assets and a key economic driver for the island nation.

The development of the new airport was financed through grants and loans and via the “Coalition of Willing” initiative. The initiative saw donations and other forms of in kind assistance and contributions from countries such as: Cuba, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Austria, Malaysia, Turkey, Qatar, Libya, and Taiwan.
The AIA was constructed under the direction of the International Airport Development Company Ltd. (IADC), a private, limited liability Company, owned by the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, at a final cost of approximately XCD$700 million.

Construction of the 275 acre development commenced in 2008, with IADC overcoming several challenges, including the removal of two mountains that stood where the primary entrance of the runway is located. In addition, redevelopment of the land saw the filling of two valleys and the rerouting of a major river, as well as the relocation of Argyle Roman Catholic Church and Cemetery, and the relocation and compensation 135 homeowners,

the Airports Council International (ACI). The ACI is responsible for representing the interests of airport operators in Latin America and the Caribbean, focussing on safety, security, and sustainability.
Launching operations in 2017, AIA was faced with, like the rest of the world, the Covid-19 pandemic. However, meanwhile, AIA was confronted with an additional challenge - the eruption of the island’s La Soufrière volcano on 8th April 2021.
To understand the scale of the eruption, 16,000 people were evacuated with the United Nations highlighting a “crisis within

the Covid crisis”. Being completely covered in ash, the incident saw operations at AIA come to an immediate, and at the time, indefinite halt.
AIA coordinated a full scale “clean-up” spearheaded of the airport by its Building and Civil Engineering Department, which was supported by the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering department, the Ground Handling team, the Security and Operations teams, and AIA’s Administration team. Highlighting the importance of AIA’s economic input, the clean up also received support from the state-owned agency BRAGSA (The Roads Buildings and General Services Authority of St. Vincent and the Grenadines), as well as from the private sector.
Thanks to these efforts, AIA saw exceptional results. A total of 2,195 cubic feet of ash was removed from the airside and another 175 cubic feet from the landside. Excellent teamwork, commitment and sheer hard work by the AIA was able to return the facility to regular, safe operations within two weeks of the volcano’s eruption.
This is a clear example of AIA’s mission to: deliver high quality aviation services by providing customer focused and efficient operations through industry best practices with an innovative and dedicated team committed to ensuring the mission and vision of AIA is kept.
The airport has also implemented efforts to support the local community, including accommodating tours of the airport (pre-security), an initiative which has extended to schools and holiday programs to encourage education in the aviation sector.
Local students in secondary and Tertiary level education have also had the opportunity to gain understanding from research on the airport during construction phases.
As it moves into the future, AIA is investing into enhancing efficiencies. Most recently it has invested into some new environmentally-friendly equipment, including two stairs and a push-back truck.

Improving Efficiencies in the NHS
In June 2023 the UK Government outlined three key priorities for the NHS, setting out expectations and related budgets. The mandate states that all trusts across the UK should have implemented barcode scanning of their most high-risk medical devices by March 2024. Further to this, all data captured should be submitted to the Medical Device Outcome Registry, or MDOR, to track and improve patient outcomes when using high-risk medical devices.
Supporting this, The Barcode Warehouse has been working in partnership with Hull University Hospital, providing an asset tracking and inventory management solution, as part of the government's “Scan4Safety” initiative.
“By scanning globally unique barcodes that are present on patient wristbands, implantable medical devices, locations and sometimes staff badges, you create endto-end traceability and consistent processes throughout the entire patient pathway,” explained Kevan, “We have seen evidence of significant cost reductions and improved efficiency, and hope to roll this out at other trusts”.
The flagship project has seen 70,000 hospital items recorded and tracked, resulting in 88,000 hours of time saved for staff, real-time visibility of all assets, and access to better data to make more informed purchasing decisions.
The projected cost savings across the NHS on roll out are estimated to be £1 billion over seven years.
Increasing Robust Solutions
In the next step in its development, The Barcode Warehouse has partnered up with Traka, the global leader in providing intelligent management solutions for keys and equipment, to provide a complete suite of quality key and asset management solutions, securing access to vital keys and equipment across multiple sectors.
“Traka provides a best in class asset locker, which is robust and innovative,” said Kevan, “we are currently working with them on a large solution which is in the proof of concept stage with a major retailer with the plan to replicate this across other sites.”
More than just a locker, the Traka intelligent locker systems and key cabinets can control access to shared portable equipment, identify who last had access to a specific item and retain auditable logs and manage faulty equipment and repairs more effectively.
By The People, For The People
With customers at its core, The Barcode Warehouse has invested in employee engagement ensuring that everyone is on board with the company’s values and behaviours.
“Before becoming Managing Director I spent much of my career in sales. To sell a business and its benefits to customers you have to truly believe in it, and the team we have built and nurtured are aligned to this. We are proud of our quality people, who are empowered and trusted in their roles,” said Kevan.

Now is the Time to Hit Up the Golf Industry
Research by one of the world’s leading bodies in golf, the R & A, has reported that the sport saw a boom during the pandemic, which has only continued in the following years. 2022 figures highlight a 15% increase in people playing 9 or 18hole golf since 20201
2023 figures are looking healthy too, with tee time management booking company BRS Golf and tee time marketplace GolfNow reporting that more rounds of golf were played in the first half of 2023 than in the whole of 20192
What’s more, official bodies like the R & A have been pulling together comprehensive studies on the positive effect golf can have on health and wellbeing. This research is backed by clubs such as Royal Norwich, who are embarking on a triple-line study alongside the R & A and Professor Charlie Foster to encourage the government to socially prescribe golf as a support to mental health.

So, it’s a good time to be in the golf industry, for which Europe’s largest golf retailer, American Golf, can testify.
In 2022, International Leisure Group, the holding company for American Golf Trading, American Golf Leisure, and International Leisure brands reported record results for the year to January 30th, 20223
Recording the best results in its lifetime, total sales topped £166m, up 43.8% compared with the previous 12 months. Whatsmore, the firm saw its physical stores doubling online sales (£108.5 million in store compared with £44.1 million online).
The golf retailer, which stocks a full range of equipment to suit golfers of any calibre, has expanded its physical presence in the
UK and Republic of Ireland to 93 stores, with one recently launching in Doncaster. American Golf Doncaster’s implementation of innovative technology displays the organisation’s commitment to customer experience.
Featuring two custom fit bays, customers can benefit from its Foresight Sports GC3 golf launch monitor, featuring a threecamera system that delivers ball and club performance data with industry-leading precision.
Supporting customers, the store also has Visio Putting training aids, (developed by PGA Master Golf Professional and Specialist Putting Coach Phil Kenyon) which allow players to hone their skills and focus on how to increase the precision of their putting in-store4

Visitors to the store can also benefit from the new iPING 2.0 app which gives players the ability to measure what can’t be seen with the naked eye, ensuring golfers experience a tour-level putter fitting. For those not based in Doncaster, American Golf offers the in-person experience across the UK, and regularly hosts brand fitting days, such as the Titleist fitting days which took place in August and September.
The events gave golfers of any experience the opportunity to meet with Titleist tech specialists, who could guide shoppers through the full range and advise on suitable clubs.
The brand specialists are able to identify the most suitable head and shaft models for a customer’s swing before customising the loft, lie, weight, balance and grip.
In addition to its stores, American Golf has six state-of-the-art golf complexes (Rossendale, High Legh, Hemingford, Wythall, Chadwell Heath, and Barnehurst). The complexes have been designed to offer a first-class experience for golfers of all ages and abilities. Each site boasts a driving range fitted with the latest Toptracer technology, a fully stocked American Golf store, and a range of leisure facilities designed to encourage participation across generations.
