IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG), one of the world’s leading hotel companies, announces the signing of Crowne Plaza Danang City Centre under a management agreement with Regis Bay Vietnam Investment Joint-Stock Company.

Scheduled to open later this year, the 283key property will help meet the growing demand for meetings and events in the city while offering guests a choice of rooms and suites with picturesque views of the Danang landscape or Han river.

Rebranded from the existing Bay Capital Danang Hotel, this quick conversion adds to IHG’s growing portfolio of Crowne Plaza hotels in Vietnam, joining properties including Crowne Plaza Phu Quoc Starbay and Crowne Plaza Vinh Yen City Centre. In South East Asia and around the world, the brand continues to deliver its signature blended travel experience, featuring spaces offering effortless flexibility and balance between work and life.

Chris Anklin, Senior Director, Development, South East Asia & Korea, IHG Hotels & Resorts said: “We are delighted to continue IHG’s growth in Vietnam by introducing Crowne Plaza Danang City Centre – our first project with Regis Bay Vietnam Investment Joint-Stock

Company. Located in the heart of Danang, this outstanding hotel will cater to business and leisure guests by delivering exceptional experiences rooted in blended travel.

“This signing builds on the strong presence IHG has developed in Central Vietnam in recent years, which has included the successful opening of voco Ma Belle Danang. It’s the latest milestone for our business in the country and strengthens our offering in Central Vietnam by adding to our existing three hotels, featuring more than 1,000 rooms in total.

“There’s plenty more to come, too, as we double the size of our portfolio from 16 hotels to more than 40 in the next few years, introduce more brands and deliver more fantastic stay experiences for the region.”

As the commercial centre and transport hub of Central Vietnam, Danang aims to become a market leader for business travel in the Asia-Pacific region, which is forecast to be worth about USD$800 billion by 2027.

Rui Xiang Chin, Board Chairman, Regis Bay Vietnam Investment Joint-Stock Company said: “Thanks to its central location, ease of access and world-class facilities, we’re confident Crowne Plaza Danang City Centre will quickly become a hotel of choice for business and leisure travellers. Having seen IHG’s success in Danang, and its upcoming properties in

Hoi An, we believe the company’s strong in-market experience, global systems and enterprise will prove invaluable to driving performance and returns on this property.

“We look forward to working with IHG to make Crowne Plaza Danang City Centre a huge success when it opens later this year – the first chapter of what we’re sure will be a long and prosperous long-term partnership between us.”

Danang, known as the ‘city of the sea’, is the fourth largest city in Vietnam. With its magnificent mountainous coastline and picturesque beaches, its calm, cool waters provide an idyllic setting for activities including fishing, water-skiing, diving, and yachting.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The business trends of 2025 reveal a world in transformation—driven by innovation, sustainability, and shifting human priorities. Companies that embrace these trends with agility and foresight will not only survive but thrive in this rapidly evolving landscape.

THE MODERN CFO: STRATEGIC ARCHITECT OF CORPORATE SUCCESS

Once considered a numbersfocused position, the role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) has transformed into one of the most dynamic and influential positions in the corporate hierarchy. Today’s CFOs are not just financial gatekeepers but strategic visionaries, steering companies through volatile markets, technological disruptions, and evolving consumer expectations.

From Silicon Valley to Wall Street, CFOs at some of the world’s largest companies are reshaping how organizations think about growth, innovation, and sustainability. This evolution has elevated the CFO’s profile, making it a cornerstone of leadership in the 21st century.

The Expanding Role of the CFO

Traditionally, CFOs were tasked with overseeing financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance. While these responsibilities remain critical, the modern CFO’s role has expanded into areas like strategic planning, risk management, and digital transformation.

“Today’s CFOs are at the intersection of finance, strategy, and technology,” explains Ruth Porat, the widely respected CFO of Alphabet (Google's parent company). Porat, often referred to as the "most powerful woman in Silicon Valley," is a prime example of this evolution. Known for her leadership during the 2008 financial crisis as CFO of Morgan Stanley, she now helps Alphabet navigate complex regulatory environments while

championing innovation in artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Porat’s influence illustrates how CFOs are no longer back-office operators but frontline leaders, actively shaping the future of their organizations.

Data-Driven Decision-Making

At the heart of the CFO’s expanded role is the ability to harness data for decisionmaking. Advanced analytics and AI tools are enabling CFOs to predict market trends, optimize operations, and identify new revenue streams. For example, Amy Hood, CFO of Microsoft, has been instrumental in guiding the tech giant’s transition to a cloud-first business model.

Under Hood’s financial stewardship, Microsoft shifted from a traditional software company to a leader in cloud computing, with Azure now a key driver of its $200 billion market cap growth over the last decade. Hood’s expertise in leveraging financial data to support long-term strategy has made her one of the most celebrated CFOs in the technology sector.

“The numbers tell a story,” Hood often says. For her, the role of a CFO isn’t just about managing finances but understanding how to align those numbers with broader organizational goals.

The CFO as a Strategic Partner

Another defining characteristic of the modern CFO is their role as a strategic

THE MODERN CFO

advisor to the CEO. The partnership between CFO and CEO has never been more critical, especially in navigating periods of disruption.

David Wehner, CFO of Meta (formerly Facebook), exemplifies this dynamic. As Meta undergoes a dramatic pivot toward the metaverse, Wehner has had to balance heavy investment in virtual reality with the company’s core advertising business. His ability to weigh long-term potential against immediate profitability has made him a linchpin in Meta’s transformation.

Similarly, at Apple, CFO Luca Maestri is a trusted lieutenant to CEO Tim Cook. Maestri’s expertise in managing Apple’s vast supply chain and ensuring consistent returns to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks has solidified his reputation as a steady hand guiding one of the most valuable companies in the world.

Navigating Risk and Uncertainty

CFOs are increasingly responsible for navigating their companies through uncertainty. Whether it’s macroeconomic volatility, geopolitical tensions, or supply chain disruptions, CFOs must anticipate risks and develop mitigation strategies.

Take Brian Olsavsky, CFO of Amazon. During the pandemic, Olsavsky oversaw Amazon’s response to unprecedented demand, balancing the need for massive investment in logistics and personnel with the company’s long-term financial health. His ability to manage risk while scaling operations was critical to Amazon’s continued dominance in e-commerce.

For CFOs, navigating uncertainty also means preparing for the unexpected. Many are now deeply involved in scenario planning, stress testing, and ensuring liquidity in times of crisis. “The CFO’s role is no longer about managing for the known,” says Karen Parkhill, CFO of Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology. “It’s about being prepared for the unknown.”

Driving Sustainability and ESG Initiatives

As stakeholders increasingly demand accountability on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, CFOs are emerging as champions of sustainability. Their control over capital allocation makes them uniquely positioned to influence how companies address climate change, diversity, and ethical governance.

Tesla’s CFO, Zach Kirkhorn—dubbed the "Master of Coin" by Elon Musk— plays a crucial role in aligning Tesla’s financial strategies with its mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Kirkhorn oversees investments in battery production, renewable energy technologies, and global expansion, ensuring Tesla remains at the forefront of the green revolution.

Similarly, Chevron’s CFO, Pierre Breber, is helping the energy giant navigate the complex transition to cleaner energy sources. Breber’s focus on balancing profitability with sustainability goals highlights the CFO’s critical role in shaping the future of energy.

Technology and Digital Transformation

The rise of digital transformation has placed CFOs at the center of technological innovation. They are increasingly responsible for evaluating investments in emerging technologies, from AI and blockchain to cloud computing and cybersecurity.

Karen McLoughlin, the former CFO of Cognizant, is a prime example of a CFO leveraging technology to drive business outcomes. During her tenure, McLoughlin championed initiatives that modernized Cognizant’s financial operations, using automation and AI to improve efficiency. Her efforts not only enhanced the company’s financial performance but also positioned it as a leader in the digital services space.

Leadership and Cultural Influence

In addition to their technical expertise, today’s CFOs are also cultural leaders, shaping the values and priorities of their organizations. They are tasked with fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and collaboration, ensuring that financial goals are aligned with broader company values.

At Salesforce, CFO Amy Weaver has played a key role in promoting the company’s commitment to social responsibility. By integrating ESG metrics into financial reporting and decision-making, Weaver ensures that Salesforce remains true to its values while delivering shareholder value.

The ability to influence corporate culture is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the CFO’s role. As companies

THE MODERN CFO NEWS

grapple with issues like workforce diversity, employee well-being, and stakeholder engagement, CFOs are stepping up as advocates for change.

The Future of the CFO Role

The transformation of the CFO role is far from complete. As businesses face new challenges and opportunities, CFOs will continue to evolve, taking on even more strategic responsibilities. Emerging trends that are likely to shape the future of the CFO role include:

Increased Focus on AI and Automation: CFOs will need to stay ahead of technological advancements, using AI to gain deeper insights into financial performance and market trends.

Globalization and Geopolitical Strategy: As companies expand into new markets, CFOs will play a critical role in navigating international regulations, currency risks, and geopolitical tensions.

Sustainability Leadership: The integration of ESG goals into financial strategy will become standard practice, with CFOs driving efforts to achieve net-zero emissions and other sustainability targets.

The role of the CFO has evolved into one of the most dynamic and influential positions in modern business. From shaping corporate strategy to driving sustainability and leveraging technology, CFOs are redefining what it means to be a financial leader.

Whether it’s Ruth Porat guiding Alphabet through a rapidly changing tech landscape, Amy Hood steering Microsoft’s cloud transformation, or Luca Maestri ensuring Apple’s continued dominance, today’s CFOs are architects of their companies’ success. Their ability to navigate complexity, anticipate risks, and seize opportunities makes them indispensable in a world that demands both agility and vision. As the business landscape continues to evolve, the modern CFO will remain at the forefront, shaping the future of global enterprise.

UFC & IBM A KNOCKOUT PARTNERSHIP IN THE SPORTSTECH REVOLUTION

The world of sports has always thrived on innovation, whether through training techniques, athletic equipment, or game strategies. But in recent years, a new player has entered the ring: technology. In 2024, one of the most groundbreaking collaborations in the sports industry emerged as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) joined forces with tech giant IBM to redefine how data, analytics, and AI are used in sports. This partnership signals a transformative moment for not only mixed martial arts but also the broader intersection of sports and technology.

A Perfect Match: UFC and IBM's Vision

The UFC is a global phenomenon, captivating millions with its electrifying mix of athleticism and combat artistry. Yet, its appeal is not solely rooted in the octagon. Behind the scenes, the organization has been at the forefront of leveraging technology to enhance fan engagement, fighter performance, and operational efficiency. IBM, with its advanced capabilities in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud computing, is the ideal partner to push these boundaries further.

This partnership aims to harness IBM's AI platform, Watson, to revolutionize multiple aspects of the UFC's operations:

Data-Driven Match Analysis: IBM Watson’s machine learning capabilities will analyze fighter data, providing real-time insights into performance metrics such as striking accuracy, takedown defense, and endurance levels.

Enhanced Fan Engagement: Using AIpowered tools, the UFC and IBM plan to deliver personalized fan experiences, including customized content, real-time statistics during fights, and predictive insights about fight outcomes.

Streamlined Operations: IBM’s cloud technology will optimize event logistics, ticketing, and streaming services, ensuring a seamless experience for fans and fighters alike.

Data: The New Ringside Coach

One of the most exciting aspects of the UFC-IBM partnership is the potential to transform how fighters prepare for bouts. In an era where margins between victory and defeat are razor-thin, access to actionable insights can be a gamechanger. IBM Watson’s AI systems will process vast amounts of historical fight data, identifying patterns and strategies that coaches can use to fine-tune their athletes’ training regimens.

For example, a fighter with a tendency to lower their guard during specific combinations can have that vulnerability flagged by AI. Coaches can then tailor defensive drills to address this weakness. Similarly, fighters can gain insights into their opponents’ tendencies, such as favored moves in high-pressure moments, providing a tactical edge.

Fan Engagement in the Digital Age

Sports are no longer just about what happens in the ring, on the field, or on the court. Fan engagement has become a 24/7 endeavor, with audiences demanding immersive, interactive, and personalized experiences. The UFCIBM collaboration is poised to set new standards in this space.

Through IBM Watson’s AI capabilities, fans will gain access to real-time analytics during fights, such as strike speeds, energy levels, and predictive scoring. Imagine watching a high-stakes bout while receiving AI-generated insights that break down the fight’s dynamics, bringing a new level of understanding to casual viewers and hardcore fans alike.

This technology will also extend beyond live events. Personalized highlight reels, tailored content recommendations, and fan-specific statistics will ensure that every UFC follower feels directly connected to the sport. This move reflects a broader trend in sports where organizations are leveraging technology to build deeper relationships with their audiences.

The Sports-Tech Landscape: A Growing Arena

The UFC’s partnership with IBM is not an isolated case but part of a wider movement where sports organizations are increasingly collaborating with tech giants to enhance their offerings. Across the globe, sports are undergoing a digital transformation, and several trends are driving this change.

1. AI in Athlete Performance

AI is becoming an indispensable tool for teams and individual athletes. Companies like Catapult and Zebra Technologies are providing wearable devices that track performance metrics such as speed, heart rate, and impact forces, enabling athletes to optimize their training and recovery.

2. Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/ VR)

AR and VR technologies are revolutionizing fan experiences and athlete training. The NFL has partnered with companies like STRIVR to create VRbased training modules for quarterbacks, while the NBA uses AR to allow fans to interact with players' stats in real-time during games.

3. Blockchain and NFTs

Blockchain technology is redefining how fans interact with sports organizations. NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are creating new revenue streams, allowing fans to own digital collectibles. The UFC has already dipped its toes in this space with NFT collaborations, and the IBM partnership could expand these efforts.

4. Smart Stadiums

Stadiums are becoming hubs of technological innovation. Facilities like SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles are equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, ARenhanced viewing, and AI-driven crowd management systems to enhance the fan experience.

IBM’s Broader Sports Strategy

The UFC partnership is not IBM’s first foray into the sports world. The tech giant has a long history of collaborating with sports organizations to leverage technology for competitive advantage. For over two decades, IBM has worked with Wimbledon, providing AI-powered insights and cloudbased solutions to enhance both player analysis and fan experiences. In golf, IBM collaborates with The Masters Tournament, delivering AI-generated highlights and realtime leaderboard updates.

This track record positions IBM as a leader in sports technology, and its partnership with the UFC builds on a proven ability to deliver results. For the UFC, aligning with a company of IBM’s stature not only bolsters its technological capabilities but also enhances its credibility as a forward-thinking sports organization.

Challenges and Opportunities

While the UFC-IBM partnership is brimming with potential, it is not without challenges. The integration of advanced technology into a sport as dynamic and unpredictable as mixed martial arts presents unique obstacles.

1. The Complexity of MMA Data

Unlike traditional sports with fixed metrics like goals or points, MMA involves a myriad of variables, from grappling techniques to striking angles. Training AI systems to interpret this complexity accurately will require extensive fine-tuning.

2. Privacy Concerns

The collection and analysis of fighter data raise ethical and privacy concerns. Fighters may worry about sensitive information, such as injury histories or performance weaknesses, being exposed to competitors or the public.

3. Balancing Tradition and Innovation

Combat sports have a rich tradition, and some fans may resist technological intrusions that they perceive as detracting from the raw, unfiltered nature of MMA. Striking the right balance between innovation and authenticity will be key.

UFC & IBM NEWS

Despite these challenges, the opportunities far outweigh the risks. By addressing these concerns proactively, the UFC and IBM can set a blueprint for how technology can enhance sports without undermining their essence.

The Future of Sports-Tech

The UFC-IBM partnership represents just the beginning of a new era for sports. As technology continues to evolve, its integration into sports will become more seamless and sophisticated. In the coming years, we can expect:

AI-Driven Refereeing: Automated systems to assist referees in making accurate calls.

Advanced Injury Prevention: Wearable devices capable of predicting injuries before they occur.

Global Accessibility: Virtual reality allowing fans to experience events from anywhere in the world as if they were in the front row.

For the UFC, this partnership is not just about keeping up with the times—it’s about staying ahead of the curve. By embracing cutting-edge technology, the organization is positioning itself as a leader in the sports-tech revolution, ensuring its continued relevance and growth in an increasingly digital world.

The UFC and IBM’s partnership is a bold move that highlights the transformative power of technology in sports. From fighter preparation and fan engagement to operational efficiency, the collaboration promises to set new benchmarks for how sports organizations leverage innovation. But its significance extends beyond the octagon, serving as a testament to the growing role of technology in shaping the future of sports.

As the sports-tech landscape evolves, partnerships like this one will redefine not only how we watch and understand sports but also how athletes compete, train, and excel. For fans, fighters, and the broader sports industry, the UFC-IBM alliance is more than a partnership—it’s a glimpse into the future.

A TRUMP

VICTORY IN 2024 WHAT IT MEANS FOR GLOBAL TRADE AND THE ECONOMY

AMERICAN POLITICS NEWS

The 2024 U.S. presidential election concluded with a seismic shift in global politics and economics: Donald J. Trump reclaimed the White House. Running on a platform of economic nationalism, Trump’s victory has reignited debates about America’s role in the global economy, its trade relationships, and the ripple effects of his policies on international markets.

With his "America First" agenda, Trump promises a renewed focus on reshoring jobs, revamping trade agreements, and confronting adversaries like China with a bold economic approach. While this strategy resonates with his base of domestic supporters, it raises pressing questions about how global trade and the economy will evolve under his leadership.

The Road to Victory: Trump's Campaign and Economic Platform

Trump’s 2024 campaign leaned heavily on his economic record during his first term (2017–2021), emphasizing reduced unemployment, tax cuts, and a booming stock market before the pandemic. His message of restoring American strength resonated with voters concerned about inflation, economic stagnation, and international competition.

Key pillars of Trump’s 2024 economic platform include:

Universal Tariff Policy: Trump has proposed a sweeping baseline tariff on all imported goods to encourage domestic manufacturing.

China Decoupling: Building on his earlier trade war, Trump plans to further restrict trade and investments with China, labeling the country as the "greatest economic threat."

Energy Independence: Repealing Bidenera climate policies to revive fossil fuel industries, with an eye toward achieving "total energy dominance."

Reshoring Supply Chains: Offering incentives for companies to bring

manufacturing back to the U.S. and penalizing those that offshore operations.

Immigration Restrictions: Tightening immigration laws, particularly for lowskilled workers, to prioritize American labor.

Global Trade Under Trump 2.0

Trump's return to the presidency signals a dramatic shift in the global trade landscape. His policies are poised to disrupt international supply chains, redefine economic alliances, and challenge globalization itself.

1. The Tariff Tsunami

Trump's proposed "universal baseline tariff" represents an unprecedented move in trade policy. By imposing a tariff on all imports—potentially as high as 10%—the administration aims to incentivize companies to produce goods domestically. While this policy may bolster certain U.S. industries, it risks triggering retaliatory tariffs from trading partners, escalating trade wars, and driving up consumer prices.

Implications for Global Trade:

Trading Partners’ Retaliation: Countries like China, the European Union, and Mexico could retaliate with tariffs on U.S. exports, disrupting key markets for American farmers and manufacturers.

Higher Consumer Costs: Increased tariffs on imports would likely lead to higher prices for goods, from electronics to everyday consumer items, straining household budgets.

Trade Diversion: Companies may reroute supply chains to avoid tariffs, increasing costs and complicating logistics.

2. The U.S.-China Decoupling Intensifies

Trump’s victory has reignited the U.S.China economic rivalry. His administration is expected to double down on decoupling efforts, building on his first-

term trade war that saw billions in tariffs imposed on Chinese goods. Key elements include tighter restrictions on Chinese tech companies, expanded tariffs, and efforts to weaken China’s dominance in critical industries like semiconductors and rare earth minerals.

Implications for the Global

Economy:

Tech Sector Disruption: Further restrictions on Chinese tech companies could exacerbate the global semiconductor shortage, disrupting industries reliant on advanced chips. Fragmented Supply Chains: As U.S. businesses are pressured to reduce reliance on China, supply chains may fragment, increasing inefficiencies and costs.

Geopolitical Polarization: Other nations may face pressure to align with either the U.S. or China, deepening divisions in global trade alliances.

3. Energy Dominance and Climate Rollbacks

Trump has vowed to undo many of President Biden’s climate initiatives, prioritizing fossil fuel production over renewable energy development. By expanding oil and gas drilling, reviving coal, and streamlining regulations for energy companies, the administration aims to achieve energy independence and lower domestic energy costs.

Global Energy Market Implications:

Impact on Oil Prices: Increased U.S. oil production could drive down global oil prices, benefiting energy-importing countries but hurting exporters like Russia and OPEC nations.

Renewable Energy Slowdown: A shift away from clean energy investments may stall global progress on climate goals, potentially creating friction with environmentally focused trading partners like the EU.

Energy Trade Shifts: U.S. energy exports, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), could expand, reshaping energy trade dynamics.

4. Reshoring and Supply Chain Disruptions

Trump’s push to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. is central to his economic vision. His administration is likely to expand tax incentives for reshoring, while penalizing companies that rely heavily on foreign production.

Challenges and Opportunities:

Domestic Manufacturing Revival:

Sectors like steel, automotive, and electronics could see growth as companies relocate production to the U.S. Higher Production Costs: Domestic production often comes with higher labor and regulatory costs, potentially increasing prices for goods.

Impact on Developing Economies: Countries reliant on exports to the U.S., such as Mexico, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, may face economic challenges as American companies pull back.

Global Reactions to Trump’s Victory

Trump’s return to power has elicited mixed reactions from the international community. While some leaders view his policies as disruptive, others see opportunities to recalibrate their own economic strategies.

China: Beijing has criticized Trump’s proposed decoupling policies, warning of significant disruptions to global trade. Chinese officials are likely to accelerate efforts to strengthen domestic industries and expand trade ties with other nations through initiatives like the Belt and Road.

European Union: The EU, a frequent target of Trump’s tariffs, may respond with retaliatory measures while exploring deeper economic ties with Asia and Africa to offset U.S. trade tensions.

Developing Nations: Many developing economies fear reduced access to the U.S. market and diminished foreign direct investment. However, some may position themselves as alternative manufacturing hubs for American companies.

Market and Business Impacts

Trump’s policies are expected to create both winners and losers in the global marketplace.

Winners:

Domestic Manufacturers: Companies focused on U.S.-based production may benefit from tariffs and reshoring incentives.

Energy Producers: Fossil fuel companies are poised to gain from deregulation and increased drilling.

Defense Contractors: As Trump expands military spending and arms exports, defense contractors stand to benefit.

Losers:

Tech Companies: Increased restrictions on trade with China could disrupt supply chains for major U.S. tech firms.

Global Retailers: Retailers relying on lowcost imports may face higher costs and supply chain inefficiencies.

Agricultural Exporters: Farmers could suffer if trading partners impose tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods in retaliation.

AMERICAN POLITICS NEWS

A Turning Point for Globalization?

Trump’s presidency marks a critical juncture for globalization. His policies challenge the interconnected economic system that has defined global trade for decades, pushing instead for a more protectionist approach. While this strategy may resonate with domestic audiences, its long-term effects on global economic stability remain uncertain.

Potential Long-Term Outcomes:

Regional Trade Blocs: Countries may form tighter regional alliances, reducing reliance on the U.S. and China.

Shift in Global Leadership: Nations like the EU and China could step into leadership roles in global trade, filling gaps left by U.S. retrenchment.

Resilience Over Efficiency: Businesses may prioritize supply chain resilience over cost efficiency, leading to a rethinking of globalization itself.

Uncertain Times Ahead

Donald Trump’s return to the White House sets the stage for a transformative period in global trade and the economy. His policies promise to reshape America’s economic relationships, challenging the status quo and forcing businesses and governments worldwide to adapt. While some sectors stand to benefit, the broader implications—ranging from trade wars to shifts in energy markets—introduce significant uncertainty.

As the world adjusts to the realities of Trump’s presidency, one thing is clear: the decisions made in Washington over the next four years will reverberate across the globe, redefining the trajectory of the global economy for years to come.

2024 BUSINESS STRATEGIES: INNOVATION, SUSTAINABILITY, AND AI TAKE CENTER STAGE

As the global economy strides into 2024, businesses are crafting strategies to navigate an increasingly complex landscape. From economic uncertainty and rapid technological advancements to a surge in demand for sustainable practices, companies worldwide are pivoting to address new challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities. This year promises a transformative phase, with leaders setting bold agendas aimed at reshaping industries. Here's a deep dive into the most significant strategies and news shaping the business world in 2024.

A Year of Economic Resilience

The global economy enters 2024 with cautious optimism. While inflationary pressures have begun to ease in several regions, lingering geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions remain key concerns. Companies are doubling down on resilience, focusing on building agile supply chains and diversifying their supplier bases.

Case in Point: Apple's Supply Chain Overhaul

Apple has announced significant investments in India and Vietnam, aiming to reduce reliance on China for iPhone

manufacturing. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, stated during a recent investor call, "Resilience is no longer optional—it's foundational to sustained growth."

Similarly, European manufacturers are exploring "nearshoring," bringing production closer to home to mitigate risks associated with distant suppliers. By leveraging advanced technologies like predictive analytics, businesses are optimizing supply chain visibility, making real-time decisions to avoid costly disruptions.

Generative AI Dominates Boardroom Discussions

One of the most transformative trends of 2024 is the integration of generative AI into business processes. From creating hyper-personalized customer experiences to streamlining internal operations, AI is proving to be a game-changer.

Microsoft and OpenAI Partnership Expansion

Microsoft's continued investment in OpenAI underscores the strategic importance of generative AI. This year, the two companies launched Copilot 365, an AI-driven assistant integrated into Microsoft Office tools, transforming

products to experiences, and businesses are responding with strategies that prioritize emotional engagement over material offerings.

Hospitality's Big Bet

Marriott International unveiled plans to create immersive travel experiences, from curated local adventures to luxury glamping packages. This aligns with a broader industry trend of blending travel with personalization, as travelers seek connections rather than mere vacations.

Retailers Redefining In-Store Experiences

Retailers like Nike and Sephora are transforming their brick-and-mortar locations into hubs of interactivity. Nike's flagship stores now feature AR-powered customization zones, while Sephora offers AI-driven skin consultations. These strategies not only enhance customer engagement but also bridge the gap between physical and digital retail.

Cybersecurity Becomes a Strategic Priority

With digital transformation accelerating across industries, cybersecurity has become a board-level concern. The frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks have prompted organizations to rethink their defense mechanisms.

error, highlighting the importance of building a culture of cyber awareness.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Beyond the Buzzwords

2024 sees diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) evolving from buzzwords to measurable business strategies. Companies are tying DEI goals to executive compensation and publicly reporting their progress.

Starbucks’ DEI Commitment

Starbucks made headlines by setting an industry benchmark with its transparency on DEI metrics. The company reported that 48% of its U.S. workforce now consists of underrepresented groups, with a goal to reach 55% by 2030. Laxman Narasimhan, Starbucks' CEO, stated, “Inclusion is integral to innovation. Diverse teams create better outcomes.”

Other companies, such as Salesforce and IBM, are also leveraging their DEI programs to attract top talent in a competitive labor market.

The Return of Bold M&A Activity

After a relatively subdued period, 2024 is witnessing a resurgence in mergers and acquisitions, driven by companies seeking to consolidate their positions or enter new markets.

Nvidia's Strategic Acquisitions

Technology, particularly AI, will remain a cornerstone of innovation, while sustainability efforts will gain momentum amid growing climate concerns. Companies that prioritize agility, inclusivity, and customer-centricity will lead the charge in an era defined by transformation.

The year ahead promises both challenges and opportunities. For businesses ready to adapt and embrace change, 2024 could very well be a defining chapter in their stories.

GUSTO GROUP: WHERE PASSION MEETS INNOVATION

For a man who says he has never had a proper job, Steff Wright, founder of Gusto Group, was destined to have a transformative effect on the work lives of many other people.

The football-mad entrepreneur began his first business at the age of 17 running mobile discos. An archetypal customer-facing enterprise providing disco entertainment was a modest but useful starting point in his career, where he learned the nuts and bolts of commerce.

Wright says: “I didn't go to university. I didn't get any formal education in business but I've just picked stuff up on the way. I got into a job in building and I did a building diploma and off the back of that I started to get into development.”

He founded Gusto Group with his brother, Jerome, in 1992 and it has gradually evolved into a diverse range of companies. It includes a construction and development company, Gusto Construction and Gusto Homes, an architect's practice called Studio-G Architects, and a manufacturing business called Rototek. The common theme threading them all together is sustainability and innovation.

It was the 1992 Rio Summit that fired Wright’s interest in sustainability and new technologies. This passion would

see him make the unorthodox decision to switch from being the customer of a company that made rainwater harvesting systems and large underground storage tanks to buying it up when it went into administration.

“The business was just about to fall over,” Wright explains, adding: “We were going to lose them as a potential supplier. They were local to us.”

“We understood the business a little bit and decided to step in. We bought the business out of administration and it had 40 staff at the time, very good engineers but not very good at the commercial side of running a business.”

His faith in the company would pay off. Eventually the failing business was turned around and is now a successful and innovative rotational moulding company employing 120 staff out of two different factories.

Wright’s belief in innovation doesn’t stop at the workplace. He himself lives on a development of 30 houses, built on land that was owned by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, which was keen to see more innovation on it. That’s when Wright stepped in with a development concept.

It was a win-win situation for both sides, with the agricultural society benefiting from the quality sustainable housing Gusto

provides, which would not have been on offer from one of the housing behemoths that dominates the market.

Central to Wright’s vision of housing is the concept of community. He stresses that Gusto Group doesn’t just build rows of smart but soulless low-energy homes but designs developments with the intention of creating communities of people who live cheek by jowl and share each other’s joys and tears. He wants them to be full of communal spaces and places where people will bump into each other.

The development that Wright lives in is a case in point. It’s a world away from the dull, utilitarian housing developments.

Lynx AC

In 1974, Lynx Air Conditioning began as a humble sole trader operation with a single van, operating out of a small garage in the East Midlands. Over the years, it has evolved into a dynamic, industry-leading company with 19 employees and a 3,000-square-foot office, showroom, and storage facility. Our journey from small beginnings to becoming a Limited company in 1999 is one marked by steady, organic growth and a commitment to excellence. We have built a reputation for high-quality service in the design, installation, and aftercare of air conditioning and ventilation systems across sectors as diverse as education, the Ministry of Defence, public services, industrial, commercial, and domestic.

Our success is not just a reflection of the length of time we’ve been in business but the depth of experience we’ve gained. Over the years, we have secured some of the highest accolades in our industry, including significant health and safety accreditations. These achievements have enabled us to establish valuable connections and networks across the region. Some of our most notable partnerships and certifications include:

Refcom Elite

Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Quality Partner

Daikin D1+ Partner

Safe Contractor

CHAS

Avetta

Our commitment to achieving and maintaining these certifications underscores our focus on delivering not just functional solutions but also peace of mind for our clients. The recognition in our field is only one part of our story; the heart of our success lies in our people. Investing in People, Investing in Success

The driving force behind Lynx's growth in recent years has been the passionate and dedicated individuals who make up our team. We believe in the potential of ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Our employees are our future, and their personal growth is intrinsically linked to the success of the company. Whether it’s adapting to changes in technology, learning new skills, or contributing innovative ideas, our team members continually rise to the occasion.

We understand that without investing in our people, the company cannot continue to grow. That’s why we prioritise training and development, allowing team members the time and resources to expand their knowledge and expertise. This culture of learning and innovation has propelled us forward, enabling us to excel in every project we undertake.

A Vision for a Greener Future

As a forward-thinking company, Lynx Air Conditioning has aligned its vision with the global push for sustainability and environmental responsibility. We are committed to playing our part in achieving the UK’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. While our contribution may seem small in the grand scheme of things, we believe that if everyone does their part, the cumulative impact can be substantial.

Our approach to sustainability begins with the suppliers and manufacturers we choose to work with. We are selective in partnering only with those who provide the most energy-efficient and environmentally responsible equipment. Additionally, we’ve made it a priority to minimise the environmental impact of our operations. Most of our projects are located within a 30-minute radius of our base, which allows us to carefully plan our journeys to avoid wasting time and fuel.

We also take pride in our waste management practices. The vast majority of the materials we use, including cardboard, polystyrene, pallets, and scrap, are recycled. Only a small fraction of our waste is sent to external companies for further separation, and an even smaller amount ends up in landfills. By continually striving to reduce our environmental footprint, we aim to create a sustainable model for growth that can be replicated in other areas of our business.

Embracing Greener Technologies

As the UK government continues to push towards its net-zero goals, the heating and air conditioning industry has had to adapt. We have embraced the shift away from fossil fuel-based systems and are now focusing on greener technologies such as heat pump air conditioning, air-to-water heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, and mechanical heat recovery systems. These solutions are being implemented across both commercial and domestic sectors, positioning Lynx at the forefront of innovation in our industry.

To showcase these technologies, we have recently built a new showroom where consumers can see the equipment in action. Many people find it difficult to understand how these systems work and are often reliant on the word of the tradesperson they hire. By offering a space where customers can view, interact with, and learn about these technologies, we are making the transition to greener systems more accessible and easier to understand.

Collaboration and Future Growth

One of the standout collaborations in recent years has been our partnership with Gusto Construction, a company known for its forward-thinking approach to building design and energy efficiency. Our initial work with Gusto involved providing mechanical air conditioning and ventilation for their new office complex. Their commitment to going above and beyond building regulations, particularly in terms of thermal loss and air tightness, closely aligns with our own values of sustainability and quality. This partnership has now expanded into larger projects, including the design, supply, and installation of heating and ventilation systems for a new 29-bungalow estate. The primary heating source for these homes will be ducted air conditioning and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, with the added benefit of cooling during the summer months. This project represents an exciting opportunity for us to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable building design.

Looking ahead, we are excited to see where our partnership with Gusto will take us, particularly as they recently achieved B-Corp certification. We look forward to working alongside them on future projects and continuing to grow Lynx Air Conditioning in a way that is both sustainable and innovative.

In conclusion, Lynx's growth has been driven by a combination of innovation, sustainability, and a deep commitment to the people and communities we serve. We look forward to continuing this journey and helping to shape a greener, more sustainable future.

The usual commercial model for house building of adding value to land by building down to a minimum standard to maximise the margin and the profit drives out innovation, Wright feels.

The kind of bold innovation Wright champions can involve the use of some unlikely materials. One company Wright is backing, called Hemspan, is developing a range of hemp-based building products. Hemp is a very fast growing crop, which sucks the carbon back into the ground and it locks carbon up within the material itself. If you manufacture building materials using hemp, the carbon is then locked up within the fabric of the building.

Wright doesn’t anticipate hemp buildings becoming mainstream under current legislation but if it did, it would be “a massive business opportunity”, he says.

Gusto Group has prized B Corp certification, attesting to the high standards of social and environmental performance it meets but Wright’s goal is a more holistic one; he wants it to become a fully employee-owned enterprise. This will make for a more productive model, he believes, as those that work for and own slices of the company will be far more engaged in its future. They will have skin in its game, as he puts it.

Wright says: “The future for Gusto is one of growth through innovation right the way through the business and we believe that innovation will come better when every member of staff within the company effectively becomes an entrepreneur.”

The employee-ownership goal he has set for Gusto Group dovetails with his own life plans. In three years’ time Wright will be 65. As Chairman of Gusto, he hopes will still be adding value to the business but importantly he will have achieved an organisation where entrepreneurial spirit sits deeply within the company, in its employee-owners themselves.

At that stage in his life Wright will be able to devote more time to his other consuming passion: football. He was

chairman of Lincoln City Football Club many years ago and now has a small, semi-professional football club, Newark & Sherwood United FC that plays in the FA Cup. But this is a football club with a twist; it’s a plant-based operation, with players and supporters served vegan meals and snacks.

“We are very focused on sustainability in everything that we’re doing throughout the football club and we’ve got a lot of B Corp sponsors at the football club. We’re creating a B Corp football shirt that’s going to be our first team home shirt,” Wright says, adding: “We are doing innovative stuff within football and you know football is an important part of a lot of people’s lives. Football and sport has a big role to play in this transition to a more sustainable future.”

Throughout his career, Mr. Abou Jaoude has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to skill development and to building a collaborative work environment. He has played a key role in mentoring and empowering team members, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

BUTEC: Delivering Large-Scale Projects and Comprehensive Services

BUTEC provides a broad range of services, starting as an EPC firm specializing in sectors such as Water & Environment, Power & Energy, Industrial facilities, Oil and Gas, Infrastructure and Buildings. Over the years, BUTEC has successfully executed large-scale projects, including energy plants in the UAE and Qatar, water treatment stations in Lebanon and Algeria, and airports in Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. More recently, BUTEC has ventured into wasteto-energy plants, with projects in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

Expanding its services, BUTEC also offers comprehensive facility management solutions, divided into soft services, such as cleaning, administrative support, catering, and security for clients like malls and hospitals, and hard services, which ensure the smooth operation and efficiency of large facilities. Notably, BUTEC manages water treatment plants, data centers, firefighting systems, and some of the largest malls in Africa, including the biggest commercial mall on the continent. In addition, they provide Electro-Mechanical solutions, which include industrial and tertiary HVAC, low current systems, automation, and data centers, with major projects in South Africa, Morocco, and the Mohammed VI Tower in Rabat.

Lastly, in Utility Services, BUTEC optimize public service delivery by managing electrical and water networks efficiently, reducing losses and promoting sustainable resources use.

BUTEC: Strengthening its Presence in Africa through Strategic Acquisitions

At the outset of 2022, BUTEC announced the acquisition of 17 companies specializing in multi-utility building services (such as energy, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, electricity, etc.) from Engie. These companies formed a network operating across 10 African countries, divested by the French conglomerate.

Always looking ahead, two years later BUTEC has successfully finalized the acquisition of Eaux de Marseille Maroc (EMM), a subsidiary previously owned by another French corporation, Veolia which specialized in water management and sanitation services. This move not only illustrates BUTEC’s commitment to expanding their footprint in North Africa, but also emphasizes the company’s pledge to provide safe, reliable water services to local communities. This acquisition seamlessly aligns with BUTEC’s strategy to expand its presence across Africa and diversify its range in utility services, complementing BUTEC’s core operations.

BUTEC’s presence in Africa demonstrates an ability to blend international experience with local insights, forming a cooperative strategy that garners trust and fosters local development. Through various business units, including those engaged in construction and public utilities, BUTEC aims to enhance its reach across the African continent.

South African Acquisitions

BUTEC’s operations in South Africa signify another critical chapter in its expansion story. The acquisition of established local firms such as Thermaire and Ampair, known for their air conditioning and mechanical solutions, is geared toward fortifying BUTEC’s presence within the electro-mechanical sphere. The successful transition of these companies under the BUTEC umbrella includes not only a rebranding process but also an infusion of both local and international expertise.

“In addition, we saw that South Africa would eventually need our expertise in

electrical and water networks—addressing electrical losses and detecting water leaks. This presented a great opportunity to contribute to the market. While South Africa is an attractive business hub, we also see potential in neighbouring countries like Botswana and Mozambique, which are poised for growth. We don’t regret venturing into this market. Though it’s still early, we’re confident in its potential, with positive market response and the local team integrating well into the BUTEC family” Fady shares with us.

This venture into South Africa emphasizes the potential and importance of these partnerships in enhancing BUTEC’s service offerings, enabling the company to provide comprehensive solutions that span the entirety of the infrastructure lifecycle-from engineering and construction to ongoing facility management.

In-Country Value and People-Centric Approach

At the heart of BUTEC’s ethos is a commitment to nurturing human capital. The company appreciates that its most valuable asset is its workforce. By implementing an in-country value model, BUTEC has cultivated local expertise and nurtured talent through its BUTEC Academy. This academy provides upskilling opportunities for employees, as well as 40 students every year, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the evolving demands of the industry.

“BUTEC Academy plays a crucial role in ensuring our staff stays knowledgeable and up-to-date with the evolving skills needed in a changing market. We started with a branch in Lebanon, initially focused on training for utility services as we ventured into this new field. Over time, the training expanded to the entire BUTEC Group. Now, we are in the process of rolling it out across all regions as part of our geographical expansion” Fady adds

BUTEC Academy reflects an unwavering dedication to education and development- elements that are

critical for driving sustainable growth in emerging markets. This initiative not only caters to internal staff but also extends its outreach to local communities, providing vital training workshops and opportunities for skill enhancement.

In tandem with training initiatives, BUTEC actively pursues partnerships with local institutions to foster educational programs that empower youth and stimulate local economies. This comprehensive approach ensures that BUTEC contributes positively to the human capital of the regions in which it operates.

“One of the key factors that drew us to the entities in South Africa was their established legacy training center in HVAC, which we are now transforming to formalize and expand the procedures and scope. BUTEC Academy is not just a trademark; it is an integral part of our success. We don’t view it as a marketing tool, but rather as a reflection of our mindset and culture. It’s truly one of the key drivers behind our success” Fady shares.

These initiatives resonate positively in local communities. The focus on training and development not only helps employees advance their careers but also contributes to the greater socio-economic fabric of the country by equipping local populations with valuable technical skills.

BUTEC’s’ values Business Integrity, Unity of purpose, Time Commitment, Efficiency Focus and Customer Partnership serve as guiding principles as the company strives to improve the livelihoods of communities in the 21 countries it operates within.

Company Ethos and Culture

BUTEC’s corporate culture build on a deep respect for local customs and needs. Their ethos is deeply entwined with a community-centric approach, wherein stakeholders’ wellbeing is of utmost priority. The company has embedded corporate social responsibility (CSR) within its operational DNA, actively engaging in dialogues with community leaders

Since launching the platform in 2013, Uphold has powered over US $40 billion in transactions. The platform supports over 250 currencies and commodities, offering seamless foreign exchange and cross-border remittances to members across 184+ countries.

INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTOPHER ADJEI-AMPOFO, CIO/CISO

Please tell Business Enquirer’s readers about Uphold’s journey as a financial services platform.

Uphold was founded with the goal of creating a more equitable financial system, aiming to make financial services available to all. This mission remains true today. We are dedicated to empowering individuals globally by offering a transparent, affordable, and user-friendly platform that removes barriers to financial inclusion.

The security and threat landscape is ever evolving, with that comes the challenge of keeping abreast of new threats and vulnerabilities. Uphold is not immune to this threat – we consistently adopt new technology and services to protect our customers and assets. Maintaining customer confidence and trust is my highest priority, giving them comfort that Uphold is the best place for them to invest their money.

What measures has Uphold taken to strengthen its security posture?

We proactively defend against cyber threats by engaging a community of ethical hackers through our bug bounty program with Intigriti, which we launched in 2020. This program helps us identify and address vulnerabilities by harnessing the expertise of a global community of security experts, ensuring the security of our platform and maintaining customer trust.

With new threats and vulnerabilities emerging daily, it can be extremely beneficial to get the perspective of external experts dedicated to identifying potential risks within digital ecosystems. While penetration tests are valuable, they are often static and limited to a specific point in time. In contrast, bug bounty programs offer a dynamic approach to security, engaging a broad community of ethical hackers who continuously identify and address potential vulnerabilities.

This proactive method not only strengthens the security posture of our platform but also means we can continuously adapt to new threats and vulnerabilities.

Take us back to basics: What exactly is a bug bounty program?

A bug bounty program is a crowdsourced cybersecurity initiative where organizations invite ethical hackers—also known as security researchers—to find and report vulnerabilities in their systems. In exchange for their findings, these hackers receive monetary rewards based on the severity and impact of the bugs they discover.

Organizations must set the program’s scope, clearly outlining which websites, apps, or systems are included. This provides the community with specific targets to explore. They’ll then work to uncover security issues your team has missed. These can range from minor bugs to critical vulnerabilities that could significantly compromise your organization’s security.

Once a hacker finds a bug, they report it to the organization—in our case, through Intigriti’s platform. The report should include detailed steps to reproduce the issue, ensuring the organization can understand and verify the vulnerability. Once triaged by Intigriti, our security team reviews the report, validates the finding, and assesses its severity. This step is crucial for determining the appropriate reward for the hacker.

Based on the severity and impact of the bug, the hacker will be rewarded according to a predefined bounty table.

Outsmart cybercriminals with global crowdsourced security

Harness the expertise of 100,000+ security researchers to detect vulnerabilities as soon as they surface, avoiding the costly damage of breaches.

OUR CUSTOMERS INCLUDE

What are some of the most impactful vulnerabilities that have been discovered through the program?

The community has identified a range of vulnerabilities since launch, such as misconfigurations in cloud and SaaS partners, security headers, API integrations, and data handling processes. These discoveries have allowed us to address weaknesses promptly before cybercriminals can exploit them.

How have these findings influenced your security posture?

Findings from Intigriti’s bug bounty program have led to several internal improvements, including implementing additional security checks, enhancements in our software development processes, and upgrades to our overall security infrastructure.

Platform insights have also led to more datadriven decisions. By analyzing incidents over time, we can anticipate future demands, better justify budget allocations and allocate resources accordingly. These measures have significantly strengthened our capacity to safeguard user data and assets.

You mentioned you launched the bug bounty program with Intigriti in 2020. How has it evolved since then?

We’ve expanded the scope of the program to cover new features and services, increased reward tiers to recognise significant findings better, and streamlined our submission and response processes for faster resolution.

In the coming years, we anticipate further expanding the scope of our bug bounty program to include all new services and technologies we adopt. We plan to adjust our reward structure to stay competitive and to incentivise the discovery of more complex and impactful vulnerabilities.

What advice would you give to other companies considering starting a bug bounty program?

Maintaining high engagement is crucial to your program’s success, which can be achieved by fostering a collaborative and rewarding environment for researchers. For example, we offer competitive rewards, provide clear and detailed guidelines, and ensure prompt communication throughout the vulnerability assessment process. Plus, working with a bug bounty platform like Intigriti ensures researchers are matched with programs that align with their expertise, driving stronger engagement and better results.

CRYPTO UNDER SIEGE:

THE ALARMING RISE OF HACKS ON DIGITAL ASSETS (AND HOW YOU CAN STOP THEM)

Cybercriminals are targeting crypto platforms at an alarming rate, placing digital assets at heightened risk in recent years. As digital assets become more valuable and widely used, the need for security measures has never been more critical. However, even major platforms with established security protocols have been vulnerable, as evidenced by the significant breach at the prominent cryptocurrency exchange, Poloniex, on November 10, 2023. The hack resulted in the theft of over $120 million in digital assets, marking one of the largest private key compromises of the year. This incident underscores the

urgency for all digital asset holders to protect their assets against ever-evolving threats.

The Poloniex hack is particularly notable because it exemplifies how attackers target hot wallets. By gaining unauthorised access to the private keys associated with Poloniex’s hot wallets, cybercriminals were able to syphon off a substantial amount of cryptocurrency. Once they had control of these private keys, hackers could authorise the transfer of assets without any intervention from Poloniex or its security measures. This incident, like many others before it,

highlights a troubling pattern of how critical private keys can be compromised, granting attackers complete control over the assets stored within.

The Anatomy of the Hack: How Cybercriminals Exploit Crypto Security Gaps

The Poloniex breach highlights significant vulnerabilities that persist in many of today’s crypto security systems, often stemming from outdated security frameworks or insufficient encryption practices. Cybercriminals frequently exploit a variety of techniques—ranging

from leveraging zero-day vulnerabilities and executing insider attacks to employing advanced, state-sponsored hacking tools—to breach systems and compromise private keys. Once a private key is obtained, attackers gain full control over digital assets, leaving asset holders defenceless.

This incident is just one among numerous high-profile hacks that have underscored the need for robust security in the crypto industry. Many breaches succeed due to weak security practices and the reliance on single-layer defences without redundancy, making digital

asset platforms susceptible to targeted attacks. Furthermore, the absence of layered security protocols and updated encryption methods means that a single compromised point can lead to total asset loss, amplifying the risks inherent in managing digital assets in today’s rapidly evolving threat landscape.

A New Standard in Crypto Security: Theft-Proof Protection

SymmetriQ has developed the bestin-class wallet solution to counter the sophisticated threats facing digital asset security today. Unlike conventional wallets, which rely solely on public-key infrastructure (PKI) security, SymmetriQ incorporates an additional, independent authentication layer. This unique theftproof, non-custodial wallet ensures that even if an attacker compromises the private key, they cannot transfer funds without passing an additional SymmetriQ verification process. This extra layer of security provides a robust line of defence, preventing unauthorised transactions and offering a level of security unmatched by traditional wallets.

SymmetriQ’s solution directly addresses the security weaknesses that plague many digital platforms by introducing a redundant framework with enhanced authentication and quantum-resistant encryption. Built on encryption algorithms proven to withstand both current and future threats, SymmetriQ’s technology offers protection against conventional cyberattacks, such as man-in-the-middle exploits and spoofing, and prepares for future quantum threats. While quantum computing may seem like a distant concern, attackers are already adopting “harvest now, decrypt later” tactics, where encrypted data captured today may be decrypted once quantum technology advances. SymmetriQ’s proactive approach ensures clients’ assets are protected both now and in the face of tomorrow's technological advancements, providing a comprehensive solution for resilient digital asset security.

Redefining Security in the Digital Asset Era

SymmetriQ uniquely bridges the divide between cyber and crypto security, offering a hybrid model that addresses both conventional digital threats and the specific vulnerabilities inherent to digital assets. Traditional cybersecurity firms may excel in defending against general online threats but often lack the deep understanding of blockchain technology and crypto-specific security needs. Conversely, many crypto companies prioritise asset management over rigorous security measures, making them susceptible to sophisticated attacks. SymmetriQ fills this gap by integrating a

comprehensive, crypto-focused approach into a robust cybersecurity framework.

SymmetriQ’s flagship product, a theftproof non-custodial wallet, exemplifies the company’s approach to security innovation. It secures assets without needing a centralised custodian, thus mitigating the risks associated with centralised control while maintaining ease of use. Available as a Wallet-as-a-Service (WaaS) and customizable white-label solution, the wallet allows seamless integration into existing infrastructures. For private users, it offers the familiarity and simplicity of popular non-custodial options, ensuring robust protection without disrupting user experience.

SymmetriQ’s consultancy services advises clients on digital asset protection and assisting them in building resilient infrastructures to meet the demands of both the traditional cybersecurity landscape and the crypto industry. Through a boutique consultancy model, the company offers cost-effective, tailored solutions that cater to digital asset platforms, exchanges, and individual users alike. Recognizing that budget constraints often limit access to cybersecurity services for many crypto businesses, SymmetriQ provides a range of scalable options, allowing companies of all sizes to implement enterprise-level protection without a significant financial burden.

Conclusion

The increasing prevalence of cyberattacks on digital asset platforms underscores the urgent need for robust, proactive security measures. SymmetriQ’s unique approach to cyber and crypto security provides an additional layer of defence. As incidents like the Poloniex hack demonstrate, private key protection alone is insufficient. SymmetriQ’s theft-proof wallet solution and multi-layered security approach ensure that digital assets are protected even in the event of a private key compromise.

With quantum-resistant encryption and a team of experts bridging the gap between cybersecurity and crypto security, SymmetriQ is uniquely positioned to safeguard digital assets in an era of rapid technological advancement. The company’s commitment to innovation, affordability, and accessibility sets it apart from traditional cybersecurity firms, making it the ideal partner for businesses and individuals seeking to protect their assets from the growing threat of cybercrime.

Choose SymmetriQ for unmatched expertise, advanced technology, and a commitment to securing your digital assets today and into the future.

MAKINEN’S TURNKEY SOLUTIONS THE RISING DEMAND FOR MARINE INTERIOR EXPERTISE:

MAKINEN PROJECT

DIRECTED BY:

JASON WESTGATE

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: ELLIE PERRY

The cruise industry continues to place a high demand on quality marine interiors, where functionality, aesthetics, and design must come together within tight budgets and schedules. MAKINEN, a family-owned company from Finland, has been a key player in this field since 1993. The company specialises in building cruise ship interiors, including both cabins and public spaces for newbuilds, as well as providing full turnkey refurbishment solutions for cruise lines. Additionally, MAKINEN manufactures and supplies high-quality marine-grade furniture inhouse. The company has evolved from a marine furniture manufacturer to a fullservice turnkey marine interior provider, capable of managing any inquiry related to building cruise interior spaces.

"In my time leading MAKINEN alongside my family and company leadership, I’ve

seen first-hand how our commitment to precision, transparency, and long-term partnerships has been the foundation of our success. As a family-owned business, we’ve always maintained a strong sense of responsibility and understood the importance of not just delivering quality projects but doing so within a transparent and predictable timeline,” Markus Makinen, one of the owners of MAKINEN shares and continues, “Over the years, this focus has become ingrained in our company culture and is now a key differentiator for us. It’s not just about meeting deadlines, it’s about building trust with our clients and partners by consistently delivering what we promise.”

Today, with a workforce of 50 employees spread across Finland, USA, and China, MAKINEN serves clients across the globe, contributing to some of the world's largest and most prestigious vessels.

MARINE ELECTRICAL SERVICES

With over 20 years of expertise, MarineTeknik is a premier Polish - American company specializing in marine electrical projects.

Our strategically positioned offices and warehouses in Poland and Florida enable seamless global operations.

Renowned for collaboration with leading shipowners and general contractors, we bring innovation and reliability to every project, ensuring excellence in maritime electrical solutions.

MAKINEN’s success in delivering complex projects comes from its straightforward, end-to-end approach to project management. By handling every aspect of a project—from planning and material sourcing to logistics and installation—MAKINEN ensures that clients receive a fully completed interior, without the need to manage multiple vendors or deal with complicated coordination. This approach helps deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the highest quality.

A great example of this approach in action is the work done on Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, completed in November 2023. The MAKINEN scope included managing and completing

MAKINEN Value: Flexibility Meets Guaranteed Delivery

CONSTRUCTION MAKINEN

around 60 distinct work sites across the ship, overseeing the entire art installation package, a complex task that required coordination between multiple vendors, contractors, the art team, and the client. In addition, the multi-faceted project included other owner’s work scopes, highprofile areas such as the space Behind the Pearl, the Bubbles Champagne Bar, the Embarkation Portal, the Grove Entrance, and the Overlook Bar Crown in the Aquadome. As external coordinators and managers, MAKINEN collaborated with several suppliers involved in the vessel’s finishing works, to address their needs and requirements to ensure the successful completion of tasks within a very tight schedule.

Despite the challenges of working on such a massive project, MAKINEN’s team was able to manage the complexity and

deliver outstanding results.

Jaakko Mäkikalli, CEO of MAKINEN, explains: “The Icon project was unique in many ways. We were operating in a new environment with a different project concept, which provided us with valuable experience working with various new stakeholders and in roles that were unfamiliar to us.

This experience has prepared us to tackle more demanding projects in the future and validates our capabilities to deliver complex projects within short time frames. Customer feedback from the project was excellent. This success was achieved through the flawless work ethic of the entire team and the excellent cooperation we had with our customer’s team. Everyone worked seamlessly together to achieve our common goal.”

Efficient Delivery of Large-Scale Cabin Refurbishment Projects

MAKINEN’s experience with complex projects like the Icon of the Seas shows their ability to manage a wide range of tasks across a vessel. However, their approach to high-volume refurbishment projects reveals a different kind of skillset. A great example of delivering such projects is the recent refurbishment of 803 cabins at the Margaritaville at Sea Islander, completed in April 2024.

MAKINEN completed the entire Margaritaville at Sea Islander project in just 28 days. Refurbishing over 800 cabins in such a short time may seem like a huge task, but for MAKINEN, it’s all part of the job. “Like with all our cruise ship refurbishment projects, we applied our proprietary production method, the MAKINEN Way, and completed 32 cabins per day. The production pace was flexible, adjusting to material availability and ensuring that cabins under refurbishment were easily tracked for timely completion,” says Jaakko Mäkikalli. The production method minimises quality issues and increases efficiency, allowing for more cabins to be finished per day. The method allows MAKINEN’s team to monitor quality on the spot, immediately identifying and addressing any issues that may arise during the project.

With the MAKINEN Way, there’s no guesswork. While it requires careful planning, the real benefit to the customer is having a clear and reliable schedule to follow throughout the job. ”The project’s execution plan offered full visibility for the client, so they could track progress in real time. Detailed plans were shared upfront, so everyone knew exactly what to expect and when each batch of cabins were ready for the delivery to the customer,” Mäkikalli shares.

Markus Makinen adds: “I’ve personally overseen many projects where sticking to a tight schedule was critical, and I can confidently say that it’s rare to find a company that manages schedules with

the same level of precision that we do. We bring everything we’ve learned from decades of experience in the marine interiors industry to each project we’re involved. I believe that the balance of tradition and forward-thinking is what makes us both flexible and reliable, and sets us apart from others in the industry."

The Journey with SunStone Ships' Infinity-Class Series

MAKINEN is currently working on a significant long-term project for the SunStone Ships Infinity-class series, serving as the sole interior contractor for seven new expedition vessels. Six ships have already been delivered, with the final vessel, Douglas Mawson, underway and the series expected to be completed by 2025.

The Infinity-series contract, signed in 2017, has been a journey of learning and growth. Over the years, MAKINEN has built up extensive experience in delivering full vessel interiors for expedition vessels, covering everything from cabins and restaurants to shops, public spaces, galleys, and crew areas. Each ship has been completed with care and attention to detail, and every project has built on the previous one, improving processes and workflows for future vessels.

The series showcases MAKINEN’s expertise in delivering consistent, highquality results. “With our high internal standards and pride in our work, we elevated the interiors beyond industry norms, setting them apart in both craftsmanship and finish,” says Jaakko Mäkikalli. “This expertise ensured results that went above and beyond standard practices. Both the shipyard and the end customers—the owner and the charterer—have been highly satisfied with MAKINEN’s work.

This project highlights MAKINEN’s ability to execute a series of full-scope vessel interiors in unfamiliar markets and environments. “We’ve built a solid foothold in this sector, and our experience with this series gives us confidence moving

Jaakko Mäkikalli CEO

CONSTRUCTION MAKINEN

forward,” says Mäkikalli. “Future projects will be easier to handle now that we know this area well, no matter where they take place geographically.”

MAKINEN's Approach to Responsible Practices

As the cruise industry increasingly shifts toward greener practices, MAKINEN collaborates closely with customers to align its offerings with the broader sustainability goals of the industry. The company prioritises local procurement and puts effort into minimising waste, reducing unnecessary transportation, and lowering its carbon footprint. This extends to furniture manufacturing, where teams develop lightweight, durable materials and products designed to reduce vessel weight and enhance fuel efficiency.

“Sustainability, along with Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), is one of the focus areas of our business strategy. It influences all levels of our operations”, says Jaakko Mäkikalli. “The key is that we do our part in every aspect to minimise the impact caused by our operations. At the same time, we support our customers in meeting their sustainability goals by offering services and products that align with their standards and objectives.”

A Bright Future for MAKINEN in Marine Interiors

MAKINEN’s future is looking bright, driven by valuable experience from projects like the Infinity series, newbuilds such as Icon of the Seas, and large-scale turnkey refurbishments, the company has earned its reputation as a marine interior expert. The strong demand for in-house products further reinforces MAKINEN’s position in the market. Several major projects are lined up in the coming years, offering

interesting opportunities for success and global expansion.

One key area of growth for MAKINEN is in refurbishment projects, as cruise lines seek to upgrade their fleets to increase revenue and customer satisfaction. The demand for MAKINEN’s expertise in turnkey projects and efficient project management is set to rise. Dry-docks are fast-paced, with no room for delays, and timely completion is crucial to maintaining trust and customer satisfaction.

”We take immense pride in our work and deeply respect our customers and the services we provide. This is why we value partnerships so highly, as they allow us to deliver our best work together. As we continue to grow, it will become increasingly crucial for us to ensure that every project we take on receives the attention and dedication it deserves”, says Markus Makinen.

MAKINEN’s vision is to set the benchmark in the cruise industry by 2030. “As far as we know, we are the only contractor in the world that handles all three areas of marine interiors: refurbishment, custom furniture, and full-scope newbuilds. This comprehensive approach strengthens our market outlook and positions us for continued success in the industry,” says Jaakko Mäkikalli.

As MAKINEN expands its global footprint, its strong leadership, skilled team, and commitment to operational excellence will enable the company to continue succeeding in the marine interiors market. MAKINEN’s future in this specialized field looks bright.

CITY ON THE GREEN HOW DUNDEE IS PIONEERING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL PROJECT

DIRECTED BY: JESS COLLINS

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: CATHERINE LAFFERTY

We all want a cleaner, greener world in which to live and thrive yet nudging people towards a sustainable future is easier said than done. But one local authority is facing that challenge head on.

Dundee City Council, a local authority for a condensed eight mile by threemile city with a population of 150,000 people that was once known for its whaling, jute production and journalism, is at the forefront of driving environmental change with a bold mix of communication, out of the box thinking and cutting-edge technology.

This is much to do with the kind of place the Scottish east coast city has become and the age profile of its citizens. It is now home to two universities and hosts a dynamic young workforce. Fully one

in seven Dundonians are students. Ideal territory, then, for forward-looking green initiatives to take root.

Fraser Crichton, a farmer’s son who joined Dundee City Council 23 years ago, rising to become its corporate fleet operations manager, believes constant engagement with new technologies like Electric Vehicle (EV) charging will be key to the city maintaining its leading position in urban sustainability.

“The innovation over the last 10 years is incredible,” he marvels.

Crichton now heads up Dundee City Council’s 10-year EV Strategy plan and vision, which he describes as both simple and complex.

At the simple end it entails such policies

as a huge push to reduce the number of vehicles by promoting cycling and improvements in the local bus and train services.

Somewhat more complex are the significant sustainability initiatives the council is implementing. One example is its school renewal programme in which it is investing £100 million. The programme will see the amalgamation of two schools in a building with solar panels on top and heat pumps underneath. Yet even better, the renewable energy in the school will be used not solely for the school itself but will be made available to the whole community, for charging infrastructure, minibuses and surrounding houses.

There is also a £17 million levelling up project from the UK government in the offing, which will see a concrete multistorey car park, a classic of the 1970s brutalist school, lose its ugly facade, and undergo structural improvements. It will be supplied with battery storage and chargers and have solar panels installed on its roof. At the same time, the number of its parking spaces will be halved 350 to maximise space.

Crichton explains: “We want the ability not just to have people park in their cars, but also park their cars where they have space to open their doors; disabled communities will be able to use it so that the chargers that we are putting in place have an area where you can get your wheelchair around.”

Dundee’s residents are being closely involved in the council’s sustainability efforts, which is vitally important because, as Critchton stresses, people can find change difficult.

Community engagement on the city council’s environment projects starts six months in advance with focus groups held to ensure the community is kept fully informed of the details of and reasons for the city council’s initiatives.

Key to the council’s green vision is its inclusivity. It is not just building

this infrastructure or changing the transportation in the city for certain sectors but across the board, Crichton stresses.

The implementation of EV infrastructure illustrates the efforts the council is making to put social equity at the heart of its environmental plans. In 2016 Dundee was given central government funding to build three EV charging hubs across the city. The first one was intentionally built in a working-class area.

Crichton notes: “We understood that people might have a driving licence but could not afford to have a vehicle. So, we put on a lot of car clubs. We used a system where the hub was next to an employment centre. An example would be if there was a job 10 miles away. We knew that somebody had a licence but didn't have a car so we could give them the carpool to go to that job interview.”

Dundee City Council is also using the power of ordinary human interaction to embed ESG principles into its operation and get the word out about them. The city’s taxi drivers who would once talk about the weather are now chattering away about their new EVs, Crichton observes approvingly.

“They're promoting the EVs as opposed to the promotion coming out of the local authority and therefore the policies that we put in place for EVs had a much bigger knock-on effect with the community,” he says.

Another task the council has set itself is reversing the decline in people utilising its fine parks and green spaces. To that end it is putting on festivals and encouraging outdoor events in open spaces.

As part of its EV offering Dundee City Council has also partnered with Bluewater Group to enhance its charging hubs and put them to other smart uses. It’s another multi-purpose initiative that helps reduce single-use plastic consumption and improves access to clean drinking water as well as charging vehicles.

Worried About Tap Water Quality and the Impact of Single-Use Plastic Bottles?

The water purification solutions provider ensuring access to clean and sustainable drinking water across the world

Shockingly, the assumption that sourcing clean drinking water is a problem only for those in developing countries is swiftly becoming a fallacy.

A study carried out in London, UK, by water purification solutions provider, Bluewater Group, found that the level of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the capital are higher than those accepted by the European Union. This makes the UK’s drinking water amongst the worst in Europe.

But it's not just an issue for the UK. An extensive study carried out by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill indicated that 40% of people worldwide are falling out of love with tap water amid fears it is unsafe.

Alongside these concerns about the quality of water coming out of our taps, the environmental devastation of single-use plastic bottles continues to grow. Some 600 billion plastic bottles are used globally every year with only around 9 percent being recycled, with the remainder ending up being landfilled, incinerated, or leaking into our natural environment to pollute our lakes, rivers, oceans, and food system.

And although we have been led to believe that bottled water is better than tap, researchers are now raising the alarm on worrying levels of microand nanoplastic as well as toxic chemicals being detected in bottled water.

So, what is the solution to accessing clean and sustainable drinking water? According to Sweden’s Bluewater the answer is to completely transform your tap water using advanced purification and mineralisation technologies.

Established in 2013 by eco-preneur Bengt Rittri (the

innovator behind Blueair, which was sold to Unilever in 2016), Bluewater has designed and delivered a suite of products to remove the “hidden nasties” from drinking water, whether at work, rest, or play.

Its range of water purifiers uses Bluewater’s IP technology of ‘SuperiorOsmosisTM’, or ‘2nd generation reverse osmosis’, which not only purifies drinking water, but reduces water waste by up to 70% and uses less energy than a single lightbulb.

Its most recent product to launch, the Bluewater Flow, is revolutionising the water dispenser market, and has already seen great success in the US with over 14,000 installations at premium brands such as Red Bull, Apple, Marriott, Peloton, United Airlines, and Google as well as many state schools and other educational institutions.

The self-sanitising, free-standing Bluewater Flow indoor refill stations are designed for simple installation and connect to any locally available potable water line within a 100-foot range. “Bluewater Flow 7 x Advanced Purification uses an existing water source and removes up to 99% of any impurities that can be found in typical tap water,” explained Bengt Rittri, founder and CEO of the brand. “The Bluewater Flow purified water system also improves the water by adding trace elements of essential minerals and electrolytes, and finally, finishes the water through a coconut carbon filter for a crisp, fresh, delicious taste”.

In the UK, Bluewater foresees the Bluewater Flow as the perfect cost-efficient and sustainable drinking water solution for spaces such as hospitals, gyms, offices, schools and universities, replacing traditional plastic ‘drum-barrel’ water coolers which come with the increased risk of bacteria build-up.

“Our commitment to innovation and sustainability is exemplified by the Bluewater Flow station which delivers business customers the opportunity to provide healthier drinking water to customers and staff while reducing their environmental impact,” Bengt added.

Bluewater is also making an impact in the global events space, helping international events such as The Open, the America's Cup, the Cape Town Marathon, and the Desert Vipers cricket team reduce use of single use plastics via the deployment

As an increasing number of people are asking “what is the best water to drink?”, Bluewater confidently asserts that the best solution is to use your local water source and to transform it through advanced purification technologies to create pure, delicious, and planet-friendly on-site refills.

Crichton says: “We roughly eat a credit card of plastic a week when we are drinking the water out of our taps in this country.”

The scheme emerged when he spoke to Bluewater about the city’s charging infrastructure and the company suggested capturing water from it which it could filter; drivers charging their cars would be able to get clean water that had been nowhere near the draining system.

Crichton says: “if you go to our fourth hub in the city, you roll up there with your

plastic bottle, reusable plastic bottle, put your drinking water under the screen next to where you're charging your car, and there you go, presto, you've got clean drinking water that's just fallen from the sky and has just been filtered through.”

The council’s sustainability goals are also being supported by digital transformation, with smart technologies improving energy efficiency and slashing emissions in the city.

Most of its renewable solar energy comes from battery storage, with the majority being second life batteries, Crichton

DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL

observes. An electric car that's run for 15 years with a battery that has degenerated to about 90% will be stacked up in a container. Then when the solar power hits the hubs, it goes stored in this system. Following the morning school runs a fleet of taxis will all arrive at the hub at the same time to charge up. The system’s algorithms have established this pattern, that high peak electricity use is at 9am, and the solar energy stored the day before is released. But the innovative technology used in Dundee is reducing that charge by using the solar from the day before.

Dundee City Council plans to continue leading in sustainable urban living and influence environmental change nationally and internationally. It has an environmental fund of £750,000 and engages with the community encouraging people to raise their environmental plans and strategies, which can be as modest as £5-10,000.

Part of Dundee’s success in driving environmental change has been down to a dogged refusal to be constrained by local factors. Crichton recalls a thoughtprovoking chat about cycling he had with

a denizen of Helsinki. At the time he didn’t think a cycling project would work in his native city and mentioned the chill, rain-lashed weather for which it is known by way of explanation.

His interlocutor was baffled by his response and showed Crichton a video of Helsinkians cycling through snowy Finnish streets banked with six feet drifts of snow either side of the path. If cycling was possible in Helsinki’s winter conditions why not in rainy Dundee, she wondered. Crichton saw her point.

“You know, it's all a mindset,” remarks Crichton, adding: “Don't close your mind. Just because you think at the beginning it doesn't work, just spend a bit more time and then look around.”

CHATSBROOK: PIONEERING PERSONALISED FINANCE IN EAST ANGLIA

CHATSBROOK

PROJECT DIRECTED BY: JAMIE WAITE

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: ELLI PERRY

Chatsbrook is an independent finance broker that has become a trusted name in Norfolk, expanding its reach into Suffolk, Cambridge, and beyond. Specialising in vehicle, asset and business finance. Chatsbrook offer tailored financial solutions to meet the diverse needs of its clients. What started as a small, local business has evolved into a well-known brand, thanks to their strong, customer-focussed values of trust, transparency, and integrity.

The company’s growth has been driven by its founder, Adrian Brooks, whose commitment to building long-term relationships with clients has laid the foundation for the company’s reputation. Today, the team at Chatsbrook continues to build on that legacy, providing flexible financing solutions for everything from luxury and classic cars, business expansion

loans, to heavy equipment for industries like construction, sustainability and agriculture.

We sat down with Head of Business, Jed Saunders, a key figure at Chatsbrook, to discuss the company’s evolution, its approach to client relationships, and how their unique lending capabilities make them a standout player in the financial services industry.

A Personal Touch in Finance

Jed Saunders, a seasoned sales professional with over 16 years of experience, has been part of the Chatsbrook team for several years. For Jed, the focus is always on building relationships. He describes his approach to business as one of problem-solving, always aiming to ensure both parties are satisfied with the outcome.

“I’ve always been in sales, and for me, it’s not just about closing a deal—it’s about solving problems,” says Jed. “A deal is only a success when both parties are happy with the result.”

At Chatsbrook, this ethos translates into a strong commitment to personalised service. The company’s goal is to be the "funding partner of choice" for its clients, a mission it fulfils by going above and beyond to meet their needs. Whether it’s meeting with clients early in the morning, offering out of hours face-toface consultations, or simply providing exceptional customer care, the team at Chatsbrook works hard to build lasting, trusting relationships.

“We want clients to feel that they can rely on us, not just for this deal, but for future ones as well. We’re here for the long haul,” Jed explains. “That’s how we’ve built a loyal client base that has stayed with us since the very beginning.”

Tailored Solutions and the Advantage of In-House Lending

In a world where financial needs can vary widely from one client to the next, offering personalised, flexible solutions is key. Jed explains that Chatsbrook takes the time to understand each client’s unique situation, both professionally and personally, which helps the team determine the best course of action. Whether the need is for business equipment, a luxury car, or even a startup venture, the Chatsbrook team listens closely and then builds a solution around the client’s specific circumstances.

“A lot of times, clients come to us with very specific needs,” Jed says. “They may want to finance a classic car, or they may need new equipment to grow their business. We make sure to listen to their situation and tailor the financing to match their goals.”

One of the key advantages of Chatsbrook’s approach is the company’s own lending book, which has grown significantly since its start in 2021. This in-house financing capability allows the team to offer

clients faster, more efficient service. The company can act quickly on time-sensitive applications, and with an in-house underwriting team, decisions are made swiftly and smoothly.

“We’ve built trust with our clients, and having our own lending book means we can move quickly when they need us the most,” says Jed. “Whether it’s funding a dream car or helping a business expand, we can act fast and provide the certainty our clients need.”

A Vast Network of Lenders for Broader Options

While Chatsbrook’s in-house lending capabilities give it a competitive edge, the company also has access to a broad network of UK and global lenders. This dual approach- blending in-house lending with external partnerships-gives clients access to a wider range of products and terms, ensuring that their needs are met, no matter how unique or complex.

For clients seeking to finance luxury or classic cars, this combination of resources is particularly valuable. Whether it’s a rare Ferrari or a vintage Porsche, Chatsbrook’s network of lenders allows the team to offer flexible and competitive options to meet the needs of high-end buyers.

“Having access to both our own lending book and a network of other lenders gives us confidence,” Jed explains. “It means we can solve our clients' problems quickly and efficiently, whether they’re financing a luxury car or a fleet of construction vehicles.”

Trust, Transparency, and Accountability

Trust is at the core of everything Chatsbrook does. Jed emphasises the importance of clear, honest communication, particularly when things don’t go according to plan. Whether it’s delays in documentation, challenges with lenders, or any other hiccups that might arise during the financing process, the Chatsbrook team is committed to keeping clients informed every step of the way.

PERSONAL FINANCE CHATSBROOK

“We’re transparent with our clients,” Jed says. “If there’s a delay, or if we encounter a hurdle, we let them know straight away. Our clients trust us to do the right thing, and it’s important that we communicate openly with them.”

This commitment to transparency is a key part of the company’s reputation. Jed explains that the business community in Norfolk and Suffolk where the company is based, values honesty and reliability, and this has been a major factor in Chatsbrook’s success.

“People in our region take pride in keeping their word,” Jed says. “When we say we’re going to do something, we do it. That’s a big part of why our clients keep coming back to us.”

Adrian Brooks Founder & Director

PERSONAL FINANCE CHATSBROOK

Supporting Local Businesses and Giving Back

One of the unique aspects of Chatsbrook is their commitment to supporting local businesses and giving back to the community. In addition to offering financing solutions, the company runs networking events, car meets, and charity initiatives. These events not only help connect clients with other businesses, but they also serve as a platform for giving back to causes that matter.

“We’re not just in the business of finance; we’re in the business of building relationships and supporting the local community,” Jed says. “Whether it’s our annual charity events, like the Santa Run for the East Anglian Children’s Hospice, or networking events that help our clients grow their businesses, we believe in giving back.”

A Success Story: Helping Dreams Become Reality

When it comes to lending, it isn’t just large, corporate businesses that are offered the help they need. Jed shares a memorable success story about a young entrepreneur who came to Chatsbrook for financing to expand his landscaping business. As a new start-up with little trading history, the client struggled to secure funding from traditional lenders. But with the help of Chatsbrook’s in-house lending capabilities, the client was able to secure the financing needed to purchase new equipment, grow their team, and expand their business.

“Helping that young entrepreneur get the funding he needed to grow his business was one of the most rewarding experiences for me,” Jed tells us. “He’s now doing well and came back to us for a second loan to expand even further. That’s the kind of impact we want to make.”

Looking Ahead

As Chatsbrook continues to grow and evolve, the team remains focused on maintaining its core values of trust, transparency, and personalised service. With plans to expand further into the agriculture sector and continue supporting local businesses, the future looks bright for this East Anglian success story.

Whether you’re financing a dream car, expanding a business, or navigating a new venture, Chatsbrook’s personalised service and in-house lending capabilities make them a trusted partner for clients across Norfolk and beyond. They can also help you with investment opportunities, Jed shares. “So, there are investment opportunities for those who have spare capital and wondering what they want to do with it. They can invest it into a local business and help and help many others by doing so.”

“From an investor's evening we had the other night, there was a gentleman there, he always had dreams of becoming a fisherman and having his own fishing boat, a real Norfolk gentleman, based just on the outskirts of Cromer. We listened to his dreams and managed to make them a reality. Speaking with him at the evening the other week, in his words, he's now got three extra careers now. Not only has he got his own fishing business with his son, he also then goes into schools and talks about the importance of the ocean and the marine wildlife in the sea, but also goes into ports and harbours and has conversations and conducts training with all the fishermen and the industries that are involved with that. Speaking with him first hand the other night sharing that, really showed that we at Chatsbrook have made a difference to somebody's life.”

For Jed and the team, it’s all about helping people achieve their financial goals-and building lasting relationships along the way, no matter what obstacles they face along the way.

THE ‘ABC’ OF SUCCESS

ABCA

PROJECT DIRECTED BY:

GLEN NEWTON

ARTICLE

WRITTEN BY:

CATHERINE LAFFERTY

ISECURITY AND

n 1986 Philip Miller’s father had an idea about the business he had set up with Russ Colden. Anyone who opened the yellow pages would see his business first. Thus was ABCA born. Specialising in time and attendance and other low voltage systems, it was destined to make a big bang. This is the story of how it happened.

ABCA started off as a lifestyle business in the Northeast of England then in his mid-50s, the senior Mr Miller decided to get his son, Philip involved in the family business Philip Miller was then based in the US. He had recently graduated in economics from Ohio Wesleyan University on a football scholarship and was working as a graduate sales manager for Ferguson Enterprises.

It was 2005 when Philip Miller returned to the UK and joined forces with his father. The pair worked well together, sharing similar styles and motivations.

Miller observes, “Luckily me and my dad got on, you know, two very similar people, very sales orientated with mutual respect. That was always our drive.”

The time and place were auspicious for the business’s growth; ABCA was about to take off.

“I always say business is about the right people in the right place at the right time, which is something I got from my first boss, Chris Bodenstine at Ferguson Enterprises,” Miller smiles.

It was a philosophy he quickly put into practice, bringing two men on board who would be critical to ABCA’s progress. Chris Scott was an old school friend of Miller’s whom he enticed from an accountancy position in London, and Phil Batson, another accountant, joined as ABCA’s financial controller. Scott and Batson are still with ABCA and the three set about growing the business together.

LATEST LED AND LIGHTING CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES

Reduce on going running and future mainenance costs.

Lux Bright Solutions: Illuminating a Path of Quality and Integrity

At a time when energy efficiency and sustainable practices are at the forefront of industry innovation, Lux Bright Solutions has emerged as a leading player in the UK LED lighting sector. Founded in November 2013 and based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, this dynamic company has made significant strides in a competitive landscape. Lux Bright Solutions is committed to transforming how social housing and local authorities approach lighting, with an unwavering focus on quality, customer service, and long-term partnerships.

A Journey from Humble Beginnings

Lux Bright Solutions began as a small enterprise with big ambitions. From its inception, the company has sought to address the specific needs of social housing and local housing authorities, which account for approximately 85% of its turnover. The journey has not always been easy, but the commitment to becoming the best provider of lighting solutions in this sector has fueled its growth from nothing to projected sales of around £8 million by the end of November 2024. This remarkable trajectory underscores the company’s dedication to delivering exceptional value to its clients.

The core offerings of Lux Bright Solutions revolve around innovative LED technology designed for longevity and efficiency. The company prides itself on the durability of its products, measuring quality not just by initial performance but by how long each product can endure in its intended environment. By offering products that last significantly longer than competing options—some with lifespans reaching up to 100,000 hours—Lux Bright has positioned itself as a trusted partner in the social housing sector.

Understanding Client Needs

What sets Lux Bright Solutions apart from its competitors? The answer lies in its approach to understanding and addressing client needs. The company adheres to three primary principles: superior product quality, comprehensive surveying

and design services, and rapid lead times. Lux Bright insists on using only the highest quality components in its lighting solutions, ensuring reliability and longevity. Clients can experience the products firsthand, fostering confidence in their durability and performance.

The surveying process is meticulous, encompassing everything from simple schemes with just a few lights to extensive projects with hundreds of units. By providing detailed lighting layouts in CAD format and comprehensive calculations, Lux Bright not only meets but exceeds client expectations. The end result is a solution that clients can confidently pass on to installers, streamlining the entire supply chain.

Additionally, Lux Bright Solutions boasts lead times of just 2 to 3 weeks—well below the industry norm of around 6 weeks. This efficiency, combined with a steadfast commitment to customer service, reinforces the company's goal of fostering longterm relationships. In a sector where many providers may prioritise short-term gains, Lux Bright’s focus on nurturing enduring partnerships sets it apart.

Collaborative Partnerships for Success

The collaborative relationship between Lux Bright Solutions and ABCA highlights the company’s ability to work alongside other industry leaders to achieve common goals. ABCA, a prominent fire alarm and emergency lighting contractor, has been a vital partner in projects for Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing (MTVH), a housing association managing approximately 57,000 homes across the UK. Together, they have evaluated and implemented Lux Bright’s innovative SMARTLED technology, which allows for remote monitoring and compliance reporting of emergency lighting. This partnership exemplifies how Lux Bright can leverage its expertise to enhance safety and efficiency for large-scale housing providers.

Bespoke Lighting Design Process

Lux Bright’s bespoke lighting design process is particularly significant in light of recent events, such as the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017, which underscored the need for rigorous safety standards. The company adheres strictly to BS5266, the Code of Practice for Emergency Lighting, ensuring that lighting solutions meet essential safety criteria. By providing clear justifications for lighting placements, Lux Bright instills confidence in its clients, reinforcing its reputation as a specialist in the social housing sector.

Case Studies of Success

The company's track record includes notable collaborations with major clients such as the NHS and various local councils. For example, in partnership with Anchor Housing, one of the UK’s largest providers of dedicated care services for seniors, Lux Bright has delivered lighting solutions across 1,700 sites. In another impressive case, Lux Bright has provided and continues to monitor over 13,000 emergency lights across more than 500 sites for the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, showcasing its ability to handle large-scale, complex projects effectively.

The Role of Innovative Technology

As LED technology has evolved, Lux Bright has adapted its offerings to include advanced features that enhance functionality and efficiency. While improvements in LED efficiency have plateaued, the application of innovative controls is where Lux Bright shines. Their advanced photocell technology, which differentiates between natural and artificial light, optimises energy savings and enhances the performance of lighting systems. Furthermore, the integration of IoT solutions allows for seamless communication between lighting systems and asset tracking software, ensuring that clients can maintain compliance effortlessly.

Looking Ahead: Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Solutions

As Lux Bright Solutions continues to grow, it remains committed to exploring the future of energy efficiency and sustainable lighting solutions. Each client presents unique needs and budgetary constraints, and Lux Bright aims to accommodate these variances. For clients with larger budgets, automated lighting testing integrated directly into asset tracking software is increasingly desirable. Conversely, those with tighter budgets prioritise quality solutions that minimise maintenance requirements over time.

The shift from older battery chemistries like Nickel Cadmium to Lithium Ion Phosphate (LiFePO4) is a prime example of how Lux Bright is leading the charge in reducing ongoing maintenance costs and increasing reliability.

A Commitment to Quality and Integrity

Ultimately, the core values of quality and integrity lie at the heart of Lux Bright Solutions’ mission. From day one, the company has focused on providing lighting solutions that not only meet but exceed the expectations of its clients. The steadfast dedication to quality craftsmanship and ethical business practices ensures that Lux Bright Solutions remains a trusted partner in the evolving landscape of LED lighting.

As Lux Bright Solutions forges ahead, it stands poised to illuminate the path for clients seeking sustainable and reliable lighting solutions for years to come. With a robust portfolio, strong partnerships, and a commitment to innovation, Lux Bright Solutions is not just lighting the way—it's setting a standard for the industry.

www.luxbrightsolutions.com

As it grew it also began to take shape, adding fire and security to its services and developing a national presence with offices in the North West, Midlands and London. It is now structured on a threepillar basis with each pillar split into the two.

The first pillar is active fire and security, the second pillar is passive fire and the third pillar is electrical compliance. Inside each pillar, is a service department and an installation department.

ABCA’s structure is emphatically not a random one, rather it is formed in an interlocking logical structure as Miller explains: “For example, you’ve got a fire alarm system, then sitting in the service department is maintenance. So, you go out and you do your preventative fire alarm, emergency light, access control, maintenance. And you tell the customer whether it’s all working or not. If you need to upgrade it, that’s where the install sits. And that’s replicated across passive fire and now the electrical side as well. Customers realise the quality of our service and want us to do more than just one pillar for them.”

As the business grew it changed at the top: the Millers bought out Russ Colden and Chris Scott and Phil Batson became shareholders, then with Philip Miller they bought his father out.

Then in 2020 there was another significant milestone in ABCA’s story when it made its first acquisition, a Northeast based residential and B2B business called Tyneside. While Tyneside would continue providing services to businesses and residents, ABCA was evolving into a national company, specialising in the social housing market. Around 90 percent of its work currently is with social housing providers, such as Notting Hill Housing, Guinness Housing, Clarion Housing, Metropolitan Housing and Home Group.

The first part of ABCA’s story had concluded. Another chapter was about to begin.

When Miller met private equity investor Ali Khanbhai from Trimountain Partners he remembers that the pair just clicked. Their commercially fruitful relationship would illustrate yet again the pinpoint accuracy of Miller’s observation that business success is down to the right people and the right time.

Trimountain Partners invested in ABCA in 2021, enabling its expansion. It now has a turnover of £40 million and in the last quarter has acquired a further quartet of businesses. One of them, HBS, is a vertical integration into steel door manufacturing, while another is an electrical business, Citrus Group. Two of the businesses, AGS Tech and Maintec are very similar to ABCA and in the Active Fire & Security pillar, while HBS is a steel door manufacturing business.

ABCA’s acquisition of Citrus Group was not a mere impulse buy, however. There was a very definite rationale to it.

Miller notes: “The reason we want the electrical arm is because strategically it is the right thing to cross-sell to all our existing customers.”

Indeed, a lot of thought has gone into ensuring that ABCA’s growth trajectory has not been at the expense of existing relationships. It has ensured that its commitment to customer relationships remains strong amidst rapid growth and expansion by concentrating on one sector as opposed to going across various sectors.

As Miller likes to put it, ABCA hasn’t diversified across sectors, rather it has diversified its offering within sectors.

His astute stewardship of ABCA has been facilitated by his extensive knowledge of the business’s nuts and bolts, itself a product of the careful path his father steered for him.

“I went in straight as an engineer rather than anything business and sales wise,” he says.

It meant that he learned how the company worked beginning from the bottom upwards, from which everything else would follow.

“I was pulling cables on the outside of large high-rise blocks of flats for him when I first came back,” he says, adding: “In ABCA I’ve done every role there is engineering, sales, procurement, project management, finance, HR, IT, everything. “

The intimacy of his company knowledge would hold him in good stead for assuming ABCA’s reins. Miller started adopting the role of MD in 2007-8, officially taking the helm in 2009. The older Miller retired in 2011 but still kept his eye on the business.

As ABCA grew, acquired businesses and evolved, Phil Batson moved into its MD role while Miller stepped into the position of chief executive, looking at the more strategic side of the business, assessing its strengths and what sets it apart from the competition.

A clear point of differentiation is ABCA’s

concentration on writing quality tender documents, produced by its own dedicated in-house bid writing team.

“We are staying in front of that, tender writing has been vitally important for us; that’s one way that we’ve differentiated ourselves,” Miller says.

Another distinctive feature of ABCA is that it maintains a personable and familyoriented feel. The directors and owners of the business have always been very much hands-on, very involved in the day-to-day.

Miller likes to get to know the new recruits, to tell them where he’s from and what he’s like. He wants a feeling of openness to pervade the operation, where people can feel free to ask questions. He doesn’t want the atmosphere to be one that is stiff and corporate.

The roll up your sleeves and get stuck in ethos has always been central to ABCA. Miller vividly remembers his father working weekends, pulling in alarm cables when he first started.

SECURITY AND

“He was not afraid of doing anything in the business, whatever it needed, it would be done,” Miller says, adding: “It was very much hands-on, work hard, play hard kind of environment with that work ethic from my dad and Russ.”

As the future unfolds Miller sees ABCA evolving into other sectors beyond the fire and security industry but doing so crucially without losing its culture and identity.

Yet Miller strongly believes in empowerment and letting people further down the chain of command take responsibility. Key to empowering his workforce is the human resources department.

He says: “As you grow, you’ve got to have a quality HR setup. To make people feel like they’re involved, like they’ve got a say, and to really feel empowered to do that.”

A good HR department will spot and encourage the talent on which ABCA thrives. It is a source of pride for Miller that the people that are working in the business at the senior level are people that have started at the bottom, coming in as administrators or engineers and working their way up the business.

Those who have risen to the top in ABCA are the ones who speak up and think outside the box, Miller notes. It’s what people are encouraged to do throughout their career at the business.

The first volume in the ABCA has been completed. It has proven it can grow organically. Now Miller wants to show it can expand through strategic acquisitions. There’s every reason to suppose that it can. The road ahead is well lit and ABCA’s future is bright with promise.

Piraña London

A Fusion of Nikkei Cuisine and High-Energy Nightlife in Mayfair

Piraña London, located in the prestigious Mayfair area, has rapidly gained a reputation as a vibrant, upscale dining and nightlife destination, thanks to its fusion of Japanese and Peruvian (Nikkei) cuisine and live DJ-driven atmosphere. The restaurant brings together sophisticated culinary techniques with a high-energy setting, attracting a diverse crowd ranging from business executives to nightlife enthusiasts.

Market Position and Target Audience

Piraña London occupies a prime location on Saint James's Street, a bustling area known for its high-end shopping, hotels, and eateries. This advantageous setting allows Piraña to target London’s affluent locals, international tourists, and business professionals who frequent the area. By offering both high-quality Nikkei cuisine and entertainment, Piraña appeals to a broad spectrum of guests looking for more than just a dining experience; they are seeking an all-encompassing evening of luxury.

The dual appeal of fine dining and vibrant nightlife enables Piraña to capture a unique niche in the market. Its primary target audience includes business professionals looking for an upscale venue to entertain clients or celebrate professional milestones, as well as groups of friends interested in an elevated night out.

Unique Selling Proposition (USP): The Nikkei Cuisine Experience

Piraña London’s menu is centered on Nikkei cuisine—a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian flavors. This culinary style originated in Peru, where Japanese immigrants introduced their techniques to local ingredients, resulting in dishes that blend the rich flavors of Japanese sushi and sashimi with the vibrant spices and herbs of Peruvian cooking.

Dishes at Piraña are meticulously crafted to appeal to both adventurous eaters and those seeking traditional flavors with a modern twist. This emphasis on

Nikkei cuisine serves as a unique selling proposition (USP) that distinguishes Piraña from other high-end restaurants in London. This distinctive menu attracts not only Londoners looking for unique dining experiences but also international visitors who seek novel flavors and culinary innovations.

Interior and Ambiance: A Fusion of Aesthetics

Piraña London's interior design is equally strategic, blending modern luxury with cultural elements that reflect both Japanese and Peruvian influences. The decor plays an important role in setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. Guests enter into a world of dimly lit rooms featuring a mix of sleek, modern design with nods to the cultural heritage behind the Nikkei cuisine.

The design promotes a feeling of exclusivity and intimacy, which appeals to the high-end clientele. Each corner of the restaurant provides a unique backdrop, perfect for social media sharing—an added advantage in today’s digitallydriven marketing landscape.

Entertainment as an Integral Element Piraña’s decision to include a live DJ every evening further sets it apart from traditional dining establishments. The live music adds an element of excitement that enhances the dining experience, transitioning the restaurant into a nightlife venue as the evening progresses. This dynamic shift from a dining atmosphere to a vibrant nightlife scene is carefully orchestrated to appeal to younger patrons who expect more from their night out.

Entertainment is not an afterthought at Piraña; it is embedded in the business’s identity. The venue offers a curated selection of music, with the DJ lineup tailored to keep the energy high. This model has become increasingly popular among upscale dining venues, where integrating entertainment helps extend customer visits and increase per-person spend.

Cocktail and Beverage Program: Elevating the Experience

Complementing its unique food menu, Piraña London offers an innovative cocktail program, drawing on flavors and ingredients from Japan and Peru. Signature cocktails are crafted to be both visually appealing and harmoniously paired with menu offerings. This attention to detail in drink selection not only adds to the guest experience but also provides additional opportunities for high-margin sales.

The cocktail program is designed to appeal to a sophisticated palate, featuring exotic ingredients and premium spirits. Each drink is crafted with a high degree of presentation, ensuring that it’s “Instagram-ready,” which serves as an organic marketing tool. By curating a beverage menu that mirrors the inventiveness of its food, Piraña reinforces its reputation as a luxurious destination for a complete evening experience.

Digital Presence and Marketing Strategies

In today’s hospitality market, a robust digital presence is essential for success. Piraña London leverages its digital platforms to promote the unique dining and entertainment experience it offers. The restaurant maintains an active social media presence on Instagram and Facebook, sharing high-quality images of its dishes, cocktails, and ambiance to appeal to a visually-driven audience.

Additionally, Piraña collaborates with social media influencers, particularly those known for their interest in luxury dining and nightlife. These partnerships help extend the restaurant’s reach, making it accessible to a broader demographic. By capitalizing on influencer marketing, Piraña taps into the online audience that values high-end dining and exclusive experiences.

Financial Performance and Revenue Streams

Like many upscale dining venues, Piraña London’s business model relies on

PIRANA LONDON

FOOD &

multiple revenue streams to maximize profitability. The combination of dining and nightlife allows Piraña to extend the average time customers spend at the venue, increasing the likelihood of higher expenditure on both food and drinks.

Revenue from special events, such as corporate functions or private parties, forms an additional income stream. These events provide Piraña with a reliable income source that helps balance out fluctuations in regular patronage, especially valuable in the competitive London dining scene.

Challenges and Future Outlook

The success of Piraña London is not without its challenges. The high-end dining sector in London is competitive, and maintaining a reputation for excellence requires constant innovation. Additionally, the business must navigate potential economic fluctuations that affect discretionary spending, particularly among its high-end clientele.

However, Piraña’s strong brand and diversified offerings position it well for future growth. The restaurant’s commitment to culinary innovation and high-energy ambiance makes it a versatile venue that can adapt to changing consumer demands. Future expansions

may include additional locations or popup experiences in other international cities known for luxury dining, such as Dubai or New York.

Piraña London exemplifies the modern, experience-driven dining model that has gained popularity in recent years. By combining a unique culinary focus on Nikkei cuisine with an immersive entertainment experience, Piraña has successfully differentiated itself in London’s crowded high-end dining market. London’s Premier Venue Reinventing Live Entertainment

London has long been a global epicenter for live music, with a storied history that includes the birth of some of the world's most iconic music venues. Yet, as the industry evolves, so too does the city’s venue landscape, leading to the emergence of exciting, innovative spaces that redefine the concert experience. The Drumsheds, located in Meridian Water in North London, is a prime example of this evolution—a venue that combines industrial grit with cutting-edge production to deliver unforgettable live music events. This positive exploration of The Drumsheds will highlight its contributions to London’s music scene, its unique attributes, and why it has quickly become a favorite for artists and audiences alike.

A New Era in Music Venues

When it first opened its doors, The Drumsheds immediately set itself apart from traditional music venues. Housed in a vast, repurposed former gasworks site, the space boasts an industrial aesthetic that not only adds to its character but also allows for a level of flexibility rarely seen in concert venues. Unlike traditional venues that may be limited in both capacity and atmosphere, The Drumsheds leverages its large open spaces and high ceilings to accommodate thousands of attendees, creating an immersive environment that enhances the impact of live performances.

The venue is renowned for its ability

Premier Music Reinventing Entertainment

to cater to a wide array of events, from electronic music festivals to live band concerts. With its sheer scale, it has the capacity to welcome upwards of 10,000 people, making it one of the largest venues in London. This scalability has made it a natural choice for some of the biggest names in music, as well as for fans who crave the energy and ambiance that come with a large, dedicated crowd.

Top-Tier Production and Acoustics

One of the most impressive aspects of The Drumsheds is its commitment to high-quality production. The venue’s creators invested heavily in sound engineering and lighting technology, ensuring that every performance,

no matter the genre, reaches its full potential. Unlike conventional venues, which may struggle to deliver consistent acoustics in such large, cavernous spaces, The Drumsheds leverages top-tier audio systems designed specifically for expansive, open-airstyle environments. This results in crisp, clear sound that fills every corner of the venue, providing an unmatched auditory experience for fans.

Lighting at The Drumsheds is equally exceptional, often customized for individual events to enhance the unique vibe of each performance. With towering light rigs and immersive visual effects, the venue’s lighting setup transforms each show into a multisensory experience, adding a dynamic,

theatrical quality that is rare even in some of London’s most prestigious venues.

A Versatile Space for Diverse Events

One of The Drumsheds' most compelling attributes is its versatility. The layout of the venue is designed to be adaptable, allowing for a broad range of events beyond traditional concerts. This versatility has made it a popular choice for festivals, raves, and even corporate events, establishing it as a key player in the London event space market.

Prominent events at The Drumsheds include the renowned Field Day festival, which features a line-up of electronic music heavyweights each year, and other large-scale dance music events that attract both local and international attendees. These events underscore The Drumsheds’ unique ability to host large, high-energy gatherings that draw from diverse musical genres and appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Furthermore, the venue has also hosted charity events and creative exhibitions, demonstrating a commitment to broadening its reach and supporting the wider community.

The venue’s adaptability also allows it to host smaller, more intimate performances when needed. With the ability to section off areas or reconfigure its layout, The Drumsheds can tailor the space to suit both large and smaller gatherings, maintaining an engaging atmosphere regardless of the crowd size. This flexible setup has proven invaluable in recent years, especially as the live music industry navigates postpandemic dynamics and changing audience preferences.

Accessibility and Commitment to Sustainability

Located just a short walk from the Meridian Water station, The Drumsheds is more accessible than many would expect for such a unique, out-of-theway venue. Regular transport links make it easy for fans to reach the venue

from various parts of London, and the surrounding area, Meridian Water, is undergoing its own revitalization, which is sure to benefit visitors in terms of local amenities and infrastructure in the years to come.

Additionally, The Drumsheds has embraced an eco-conscious approach, working to minimize its environmental impact. The venue has implemented a number of green initiatives, from reducing plastic waste to optimizing energy efficiency in its lighting and sound systems. This commitment to sustainability is increasingly important to today's audiences, who are more mindful of their environmental impact and often favor venues that prioritize eco-friendly practices.

Fostering Community and Culture

Beyond its structural and technological innovations, The Drumsheds holds a special place in London's cultural landscape due to its role in fostering community and celebrating the diversity of the city's music scene. London has always been a melting pot of musical

influences, and The Drumsheds serves as a space where a multitude of genres and styles converge. It’s a venue where underground artists share the stage with global icons, creating an inclusive environment that brings people together in celebration of music and creativity.

The Drumsheds’ commitment to community extends beyond the stage. It has formed partnerships with local businesses and community groups, supporting local economic growth and fostering a sense of connection with the surrounding area. The venue has also taken steps to support emerging artists, providing opportunities for upand-coming performers to reach new audiences in a high-profile setting. This focus on community engagement and artist support has cemented The Drumsheds’ reputation as a venue that not only hosts events but also contributes to the cultural fabric of North London.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Like all large-scale venues, The Drumsheds has faced its fair share of challenges, particularly during the pandemic, when the entire live music industry was brought to a standstill. However, the venue has shown remarkable resilience, adapting its approach to ensure the safety of attendees and staff while gradually reopening for live events. Its success in overcoming these challenges is a testament to the dedication of its team and the enduring appeal of live music experiences.

Looking forward, The Drumsheds is poised for a bright future. As it continues to adapt to industry trends and evolving audience expectations, it’s likely to remain a cornerstone of London’s live music scene for years to come. The venue's ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability, along with its ability to attract top-tier talent and diverse audiences, positions it as a

model for the next generation of music venues. With continued growth in its surrounding area, The Drumsheds will likely benefit from increased accessibility and local amenities, further solidifying its status as one of London’s premier destinations for live entertainment.

An Essential Stop for Music Lovers

In a city brimming with legendary music venues, The Drumsheds stands out as a beacon of modernity and innovation. Its industrial charm, high-quality production values, and commitment to community make it a venue unlike any other. For artists, it offers an unparalleled platform to connect with audiences in a raw, dynamic space; for fans, it promises an immersive experience that elevates every live performance to a whole new level.

Whether you're a die-hard music enthusiast or a casual concert-goer, The Drumsheds offers a unique and unforgettable experience, redefining what a music venue can be. In just a few short years, it has become a staple of London's live music scene, embodying the spirit of a city that’s always pushing boundaries and setting trends. As it continues to grow and evolve, The Drumsheds promises to remain a vital part of London’s vibrant cultural landscape, welcoming music lovers from around the world to witness the magic of live performance in an extraordinary setting.

STAY & ESCAPE Kelly Donovan’s Vision for Redefining Luxury Travel

As November transitions into December, the city’s energy shifts with the season. The end-of-year hustle is in full swing, with professionals navigating busy schedules, braving the chill, and enduring packed commutes. The familiar rhythm of crowded tube rides and jampacked calendars leaves little room to pause, but it also highlights a growing desire: the need to escape, recharge, and indulge in something extraordinary.

This is where Kelly Donovan comes in. The founder of Stay & Escape, Donovan has built a reputation as the go-to expert in luxury travel. Since launching the business at just 22, she has redefined what it means to curate exclusive, indulgent experiences for clients seeking an escape from the everyday.

The idea for her business came to her as she was holidaying in an Italian Airbnb and admiring the glamour of her surroundings, yet couldn’t help comparing them with what was on offer back in Blighty.

Donovan recalls: “I thought, I swear we don’t have homes of this sort of style back home,” adding: “I always wanted to have

my own company, and I’ve been very passionate about property for as long as I can remember, and interior design, and I just had the inspiration to start this company, as I travel a lot myself.”

This was her first foray into the market. She struck gold with her first clients, one of whom was Lucy Choi, niece of upscale shoe designer Jimmy Choo. Donovan also had a business partner 15 years her senior, who guided her in the technical side of running a business.

Passion was what Donovan brought to the enterprise. She had a very clear vision of how she wanted her holiday homes to be managed, and right from the beginning insisted on personally supervising every last detail of her business. She would visit properties before each booking, making the beds herself, training the cleaners, making sure everything was ship-shape and finished to the highest standard. She knew her reputation was on the line with every booking and, as a new entrant to the market, that she had to work that little bit harder to gain the respect of her peers.

STAY & ESCAPE HOSPITALITY

“I was really hands on,” Donovan recalls.

With seven years’ experience serving outstanding homes to the London market, Donovan’s focus has now expanded internationally, cultivating a portfolio of hand-picked worldwide properties to delight even the most discerning of travellers. Stay & Escape’s bespoke travel concierge service caters to inspired travelers seeking exclusive, hard-to-find accommodations that define luxury and comfort.

Donovan has meticulously cultivated a portfolio of hand-picked properties, from opulent villas in sun-soaked destinations to cosy chalets in worldclass ski resorts. Each property is chosen to delight even the most discerning clients, ensuring an unparalleled travel experience tailored to individual tastes and desires.

But Stay & Escape’s offering goes far beyond accommodation. The travel concierge service is built to craft every aspect of a journey into something extraordinary:

Accommodation: Handpicked properties, perfectly suited to you. From hidden gems to untouched, exclusive spots, Stay & Escape’s portfolio ensures you’ll find the ideal match for your getaway.

Experiences: Whether it’s an in-home private chef, a curated day trip, or a bespoke itinerary, every moment is effortlessly crafted to transform your travels into unforgettable memories.

Transportation: Because every journey starts with the right connection, Stay & Escape tailors private transport services to your trip, allowing your vacation to begin the moment you step out of your front door.

With an unwavering commitment to excellence and a sharp eye for detail, Donovan and her team continue to redefine the standards of luxury travel, creating seamless, inspired escapes that leave her clients longing for more.

“I don’t believe there are any requests we can’t meet,” she says.Stay & Escape is a boutique travel service where nothing is

too much trouble. Last minute demands for private chefs and chauffeurs don’t faze Donovan. She wants her clients to enjoy the most indulgent experience possible.

“I want to have homes, beautiful homes that we’ve approved, that really are well managed across the whole world and I want to help people plan the best trips,” she comments.

To that end she is determined to ensure her specialist travel team is part of the same seamless experience as the homes themselves.

“I want to save people the time of scrolling through every platform,“ Donovan says, adding: “I want people to just come to us, send us a quick message, and we find them the ideal home.”

The jewel in the crown of her London homes is The Stables, a large, atmospheric and central property, set within a quiet private courtyard in an urban oasis of peace and tranquillity. As its name suggests, the imposing space was once dedicated to keeping horses.

These days it is an upscale urban space for affluent travellers, reflective of the high standards Stay & Escape pursue worldwide. Its bare brick walls and soaring 22 feet ceilings make it a perfect venue for entertaining. The property comes with a dining area complete with projector, as well as a dedicated living space set with luxuriant sofas upholstered in ivory; ideal for refined relaxation. Italian wood furniture features throughout and Picasso prints adorn the walls.

It’s unquestionably Donovan’s favourite and a property that she feels particularly appeals to design-conscious clients who value discretion and privacy.

That’s something provided by The Stables, which is not only beautiful and spacious, but allows clients to have a fully bespoke experience, in which they can cook if they want or have a private chef if they prefer. It’s a completely individual experience that cannot be replicated in a hotel.

STAY & ESCAPE HOSPITALITY

Donovan says “For us, it’s so much more than a business. We’re really focused on creating experiences for our guests and creating comfort with our homes as well.”

She adds: “We have larger homes. But this one, there’s something about it that I just think is so unique.”

Now firmly settled in her chosen field, Donovan is keen for Stay & Escape to keep its focus on the finest properties worldwide and become a well-known brand denoting excellence in its sector.

She says: “I want to establish the brand, so it becomes a little bit more of a household name in terms of travel.”

That will mean bringing more people on board, a prospect she anticipates with relish.

Donovan remarks: “I want to expand my team, because my team is very important to me, and it’s so much fun having a team.”

A team of people dedicated to providing the most luxurious stays in the most glamorous locations in the world. This is the last word in escapism and truly is the stuff of dreams.
