FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH: IYC OUTSHINES INDUSTRY TRENDS AND CHARTS A COURSE FOR GROWTH IN 2024

The global yacht market experienced significant challenges throughout 2024, continuing the downturn that began in the latter part of 2022. While the overall market saw a steep 23% decline in transactions, IYC outperformed industry trends, reporting only a modest 6% drop compared to 2023. Buyer behavior in 2024 reflected the shifting market dynamics. Buyers were more price-conscious and deal-focused than in previous years, with correctly priced yachts moving quickly. IYC’s expanding global presence, recruitment of top brokers, and strong client network have bolstered

the company’s portfolio and solidified its position as a trusted leader in the industry. Indeed, IYC consistently ranks among the top three companies in annual yacht sales, with approximately 60% of transactions stemming from its own listings. This track record reinforces owners’ trust in the company. Notable achievements in 2024 included the sale of 40 yachts, the addition of 60 new sales listings over 80’ (24m), surpassing last year’s total of 44, and recording eight in-house deals.

IYC’s robust performance across departments underscores the success of its strategic approach. CEO Raphael Sauleau attributed these achievements to the company’s expertise and reach: “Our brokers’ deep knowledge, extensive global network, and strong focus on the larger yacht segment have been critical drivers of our success.”

Michel Chryssicopoulos, Global Managing Partner, reflected on the company’s resilience: “In a difficult market, we’re proud to report growth across all divisions. We end the year with over 40 yachts sold and almost 3,000 days of charter booked, securing over 790 weeks on our charter fleet. Our charter-managed fleet now includes 160+ yachts, and we’ve expanded our technical management portfolio to 56 yachts.”

IYC continues to hold the title of the largest fleet in the world. This year, we welcomed 35 new charter listings, expanding our active fleet to over 160 yachts and solidifying our #1 position globally. Our charter management team successfully executed 804 charter contracts, achieving a remarkable total charter fee value of $115 million.

Frankie Maxwell, IYC’s US Sales & Charter Director, emphasized the strong synergy between the company’s Charter Retail and Charter Management departments, stating, “Our brokers take the time to know each yacht personally, thanks

to our collaborative approach.” This empowers brokers to provide tailored recommendations, significantly boosting booking conversions.

Greece remains a favorite for yacht charters, continuing to lead globally, capturing 26% of the world’s charter market. In summer 2024, IYC maintained its foothold in the region, boasting the

largest charter fleet in Greece with over 60 yachts available. The East Mediterranean region, encompassing Greece, Croatia, Turkey, and nearby hotspots, accounted for an impressive 51% of all summer bookings, reflecting its enduring appeal among charter clients.

While the East Mediterranean shines in the summer, the Caribbean and The Bahamas dominate as winter destinations. Despite a slight slowdown in The Bahamas attributed to updated VAT regulations, interest in the Caribbean is on the rise. This seasonal shift highlights the importance of adaptability in catering to client preferences.

Looking forward, Southeast Asia, and Thailand in particular, is gaining traction as an emerging charter destination. With its pristine waters, vibrant culture, and unique cruising experiences, the region presents an exciting opportunity for IYC to expand its reach and offer clients a variety of charter experiences.

Pioneering Digital Innovation

IYC’s success across departments stems from a decade of digital evolution, with a significant emphasis on SEO and advanced online tools. This strategy has paid off, with 2024 marking a five-year high for both revenue and conversion rates on IYC.com. IYC’s exceptional charter performance in 2024 is not only a result of its industry expertise but also a reflection of its strategic investments in digital growth.

With a strong focus on leveraging technology, the company continues to set benchmarks for innovation and client engagement in the sector. In fact, 127 charters were booked through IYC. com in 2024, representing over $10 million in total charter fees. “Our investment in data analytics and technical tools has helped us stay competitive, particularly in the large yacht market of 131’-197’ (40-60m)” shared CEO Raphael Sauleau.

Marketing efforts, both digital and traditional, have amplified global exposure for the company’s listings, bolstering IYC’s search engine rankings and enhancing lead generation. As Chryssicopoulos explained, “Our targeted campaigns have strengthened IYC’s global presence while ensuring measurable growth in website traffic.”

The introduction of the Horizons Blog in January 2024, for example, has helped shape and grow how IYC connects with its audience, generating hundreds of thousands of new visitors to the website. By offering engaging content on yachting trends, destinations, and insights, the blog drives traffic and builds trust with potential clients.

Innovation extends to IYC’s proprietary tools like BLUE, an AI-powered yacht management software, and the RESERVE feature, which streamline operations and simplify the client journey. RESERVE, for example, offers clients the ability to secure their desired yacht with just a 5% authorization of the charter fee. This priority reservation remains flexible, with no payment processing until the contract is finalized, allowing clients to confidently hold their yacht and consult with IYC experts to finalize details. “This tool has not only enhanced booking efficiency but also increased conversion rates,” Sauleau noted.

Strengthening Industry Partnerships

This year, IYC solidified its position as a leader in the yachting industry through major collaborations with renowned shipyards. We are honored to have become the exclusive commercial agent for Sunreef Yachts in the UK, bringing their innovative catamarans to discerning clients in this key market. Additionally, IYC was appointed as the official global representative for Moonen Yachts.

With 15 yacht shows attended globally, 2024 saw IYC’s presence resonate strongly with both clients and industry partners. Our signature lounges and activations drew acclaim for their hospitality and immersive experiences, made possible through the support of our valued partners, including Jet Aviation, Bollinger, Panerai, GWS, and many others who contributed to enhancing the moments we shared with our clients.

Introducing the Green Team: A Sustainability Initiative

In 2024, we proudly launched the Green Team, reflecting IYC’s commitment to a more sustainable future. Key actions of this program include implementing waste reduction strategies across all IYC offices, establishing green guidelines to drive sustainable practices companywide, prioritizing suppliers and partners with demonstrable sustainability commitments, actively participating in local environmental events to give back to the communities we serve, and organizing worldwide eco-focused initiatives to inspire change and promote environmental awareness.

Looking to 2025, Sauleau concluded, “We’ve strengthened our performance across sales, charter, and yacht management. Our fleet has grown, and we’ve maintained our position among the top companies in sales. Strong activity in this last quarter of 2024 gives us confidence for the year ahead.”

THE ORACLE OF OMAHA: BUSINESS TRIUMPHS

In the pantheon of global business legends, few names command as much reverence as Warren Buffett. Dubbed the “Oracle of Omaha,” Buffett’s journey from a precocious young investor to one of the wealthiest and most influential figures in the world is a story of discipline, acumen, and a keen understanding of the markets. His investment philosophy, anchored in value investing and a deep belief in the power of patience, has shaped not only his portfolio but the broader financial landscape.

Humble Beginnings and Early Business Ventures

Buffett’s story begins in Omaha, Nebraska, where he demonstrated a knack for entrepreneurship early in life. At age 11, he made his first stock purchase, investing in Cities Service Preferred at $38 per share. While the stock initially dipped to $27, Buffett’s resolve paid off when it climbed to $40. This formative experience instilled in him the importance of patience—a hallmark of his future success.

By his teenage years, Buffett was already building small businesses, including a pinball machine operation that he

WARREN BUFFETT’S

sold for a tidy profit. These ventures laid the foundation for his understanding of capital allocation and operational efficiency.

The Birth of Berkshire Hathaway

In 1965, Buffett took control of Berkshire Hathaway, a struggling textile manufacturing company. Recognizing the challenges in the textile industry, Buffett pivoted the company towards investments in more lucrative sectors, eventually transforming Berkshire into a diversified conglomerate.

Today, Berkshire Hathaway boasts a market capitalization exceeding $700 billion and owns a portfolio of businesses ranging from insurance giants like GEICO to consumer favorites like Dairy Queen and Duracell. It also holds significant stakes in blue-chip companies such as Apple, Coca-Cola, and American Express. This transformation has cemented Buffett’s reputation as a visionary.

Investment Philosophy: Patience Pays

Buffett’s investment philosophy is deceptively simple: identify undervalued companies with strong fundamentals and hold them long-term. His mantra, “Our favorite holding period is forever,” underscores his belief in the power of compound interest and the importance of resisting market whims.

A notable example is Berkshire Hathaway’s investment in Coca-Cola. In 1988, Buffett began acquiring shares in the beverage giant, ultimately investing $1 billion. Decades later, the value of this investment has grown exponentially, providing Berkshire with consistent dividends.

Buffett has also emphasized the importance of investing in businesses with enduring competitive advantages. “The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how much it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and, above all, the

durability of that advantage,” he once explained.

Partnerships and Endorsements

Buffett’s success has often been bolstered by his partnerships with other visionary leaders. His long-standing relationship with Charlie Munger, Berkshire’s Vice Chairman, is one such example. Munger’s analytical rigor complements Buffett’s intuitive understanding of markets, creating a dynamic duo that has driven Berkshire’s meteoric rise.

Their investments have also won the admiration of business leaders worldwide. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, recently commented on Buffett’s substantial stake in Apple: “Warren and Berkshire Hathaway’s investment in Apple is a testament to their belief in our mission and our products. We are honored to have their support.”

Similarly, American Express CEO Stephen Squeri lauded Buffett’s loyalty to the company: “Warren’s trust in our brand and our strategy reinforces the value we deliver to our customers every day.”

Resilience Through Crises

Buffett’s leadership has been tested through multiple economic downturns, including the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. His steady hand and prudent decision-making during these turbulent times have earned him widespread respect.

During the 2008 crisis, Buffett famously referred to derivatives as “financial weapons of mass destruction” but also demonstrated his willingness to act decisively. Berkshire provided critical capital to companies like Goldman Sachs and General Electric, earning significant returns and showcasing Buffett’s role as a stabilizing force in the market.

Philanthropy and Legacy

Beyond his business acumen, Buffett’s philanthropic endeavors have cemented

his legacy. In 2006, he pledged to give away the majority of his wealth, primarily through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. To date, he has donated over $50 billion, making him one of the most generous philanthropists in history.

Buffett’s Giving Pledge, co-founded with Bill Gates, encourages billionaires to commit a significant portion of their wealth to charitable causes. “The truth is, I have been treated extraordinarily well by this world,” Buffett once remarked. “I have no problem giving back what I can.”

Lessons for Aspiring Investors

Buffett’s career offers valuable lessons for investors at all levels. His disciplined approach, commitment to ethical business practices, and long-term perspective stand as guiding principles. Among his most memorable pieces of advice is his caution against market speculation: “The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.”

Buffett’s emphasis on continual learning also resonates deeply. A voracious reader, he spends hours each day consuming financial reports, newspapers, and books. “The more you learn, the more you earn,” he often says.

The Enduring Legacy

As Warren Buffett approaches his centennial years, his influence shows no signs of waning. His ability to adapt to changing market dynamics while staying true to his core principles sets him apart in the world of finance. Whether it’s through his investments, philanthropy, or words of wisdom, Buffett continues to inspire generations of entrepreneurs and investors.

In the words of Buffett himself, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” His actions, both in business and beyond, have planted countless trees, ensuring his legacy will endure for decades to come.

THE SPACE RACE OF 2025: NEW FRONTIERS AND FIERCE COMPETITION

SPACE RACE NEWS

The year 2025 marks a pivotal moment in the modern space race. With private companies, national space agencies, and multinational collaborations all vying for dominance, the cosmos has never been more crowded or contested. This article explores the major players, groundbreaking projects, and challenges shaping humanity’s reach for the stars.

A New Era of Space Exploration

Gone are the days when space exploration was a two-horse race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Today, the competition is fueled by an eclectic mix of governments, private companies, and even emerging economies. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson recently described this period as “the most exciting era of space exploration since Apollo,” adding, “We’re not just racing to the Moon or Mars; we’re defining what it means to be an interplanetary species.”

While NASA’s Artemis program aims to establish a sustainable presence on the Moon by the late 2020s, China’s lunar ambitions have accelerated with its Chang’e program. Meanwhile, private enterprises like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Rocket Lab are innovating at breakneck speed to make space travel more accessible and cost-effective.

The Major Players

SpaceX: Elon Musk’s company remains at the forefront of space innovation. In 2025, SpaceX is focusing on completing the Starship program, designed for Mars colonization. Musk recently stated, “Starship will enable a future where we can live on other planets. “We need a 21st-century framework for space governance,” said Jessica West, a space policy expert.

Space Debris: With thousands of satellites in orbit, managing space junk has become critical. ESA’s ClearSpace-1 mission, aiming to remove debris, is a promising step but far from a comprehensive solution.

Ethics and Equity: Critics argue that space exploration often overlooks pressing terrestrial issues. “The money spent on space could address poverty and climate change,” said economist Vandana Shiva. However, proponents counter that space technologies often yield Earth-based benefits, such as climate monitoring.

The Role of Private Sector Innovation

The privatization of space is both a boon and a challenge. While companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are driving down costs and increasing access, their dominance raises questions about monopolies and national security.

“Space is a public good,” argued a recent report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “We must ensure it remains accessible to all.”

The Vision for 2030 and Beyond

Looking beyond 2025, the ambitions are staggering:

Mars Colonization: SpaceX’s goal of establishing a self-sustaining colony on Mars by the 2030s is both visionary and daunting.

THE RISE OF ROBOTICS TRANSFORMING MODERN BUSINESS IN 2025

In the fast-evolving world of technology, robotics has emerged as a cornerstone of modern business, reshaping industries and redefining the limits of possibility. From manufacturing floors to boardrooms, the year 2025 marks a pivotal era where robots are not just tools but strategic assets driving efficiency, innovation, and growth.

The State of Robotics in 2025

Once confined to assembly lines, robots now permeate every aspect of business operations. With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and sensor technologies, today’s robots are smarter, more adaptive, and more collaborative than ever before. According to a report by the International Federation of Robotics, the global robotics market is projected to reach $75 billion by 2025, fueled by increasing demand in sectors such as healthcare, logistics, retail, and agriculture.

ROBOTICS

“Robots are no longer just machines; they are becoming integral members of the workforce,” says Dr. Maria Chen, Head of Robotics at TechCore Innovations. “Their ability to analyze data in real time, adapt to changing environments, and perform tasks with precision is transforming how we approach problem-solving in business.”

Robotics in Key Industries

Manufacturing: The Powerhouse of Automation

Manufacturing remains the flagship industry for robotics. In 2025, factories are hyper-automated, with robots performing complex tasks such as quality inspections, 3D printing, and collaborative assembly alongside human workers. Companies like Tesla and General Motors lead the way, with Tesla’s Gigafactories boasting production lines almost entirely run by robots.

“Our goal has always been to make manufacturing smarter, faster, and more sustainable,” explains Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. “Robots help us achieve all three by reducing waste, increasing precision, and accelerating production timelines.”

Furthermore, smaller manufacturers are adopting robotics as the cost of technology declines. Collaborative robots (or cobots) are particularly popular, designed to work safely alongside humans without the need for extensive safety measures. This democratization of robotics ensures businesses of all sizes can reap the benefits of automation.

Healthcare: Robots Saving Lives

In healthcare, robots are making waves as surgical assistants, rehabilitation aids, and even in diagnostic roles. Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci robotic system, a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery, continues to save lives. Meanwhile, robotics companies like Boston Dynamics and ABB are developing robots to assist in patient care and facility maintenance.

“Robots are enabling us to provide personalized care at scale,” notes Dr. Sarah Patel, Chief Surgeon at MedFuture. “They’re not replacing doctors or nurses but augmenting their capabilities in ways we couldn’t imagine a decade ago.”

Telepresence robots are also gaining traction, allowing doctors to consult and diagnose patients remotely. With healthcare systems under strain from global challenges, robotics provides a lifeline, ensuring consistent and efficient care delivery across regions.

Logistics and Retail: Seamless Operations

Robots are revolutionizing supply chains, warehouses, and retail spaces. Amazon’s use of robotics in its fulfillment centers is a textbook example of efficiency, with autonomous robots handling inventory management and order picking at lightning speed. Meanwhile, retail giants like Walmart are experimenting with robotic shelf scanners to ensure inventory accuracy.

“Efficiency and speed are non-negotiable in today’s economy,” states Jeff Wilke, former CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer. “Robots allow us to meet consumer expectations while optimizing costs.”

In addition to warehouses, robots are entering customer-facing roles in retail. Autonomous delivery robots and instore assistants are becoming common, offering customers a seamless shopping experience while reducing operational burdens on staff.

Robotics and Artificial Intelligence: A Perfect Partnership

The synergy between robotics and AI is a game-changer. AI empowers robots to make decisions, learn from experiences, and interact with their environment in ways that were once science fiction. For instance, self-driving

cars by companies like Waymo and Tesla rely on AI-powered robotics to navigate complex traffic scenarios.

“AI gives robots the ability to think,” explains Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet. “It’s this intersection of robotics and intelligence that’s enabling groundbreaking innovations.”

AI-driven robots are also transforming data analysis. In finance, robo-advisors use AI to provide personalized investment advice, while in agriculture, AI-powered drones and robots optimize crop yields by analyzing environmental data in real time.

FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS TO GLOBAL GIANTS:

DANGOTE GROUP’S PURSUIT OF SELF-RELIANCE AND INNOVATION IN NIGERIA

DANGOTE REFINERY PROJECT DIRECTED BY: ADEL MHIRI ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: LAURA WATLING

DANGOTE PETROLEUM REFINERY

It is said that from small acorns great oaks grow, and that is true to the story of growth at Dangote Group (Dangote), founded by its namesake, Aliko Dangote.

Initially established in bulk commodity trading in the 1970’s, Dangote is a diversified and fully integrated conglomerate with vibrant operations across a wide range of sectors including cement, sugar, salt, condiments, packaging, energy, port operations, fertiliser, and now, Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals.

By investing its profits in its next venture to provide self-reliance in Nigeria, Dangote boasts:

• The world’s largest flour milling capacity; under one ownership;

• The world’s largest polypropylene bag manufacturing capacity;

• The world’s second largest sugar refinery;

• Africa’s largest pasta and noodle production capacity;

• The largest cement producer in Africa.

• Africa’s largest fertiliser production capacity;

• Africa’s largest petrochemical production capacity;

• And the World’s largest single train petroleum refinery

Thanks to its growing business streams designed to reduce the amount of import into Nigeria and Africa, Dangote is considered the second largest employer in the country after its government.

The business has almost single-handedly taken Nigeria to self-sufficiency in cement and is expanding rapidly across Africa, helping other countries achieve the same.

Striving for self-reliance in Nigeria, Dangote Group is embarking on ambitious plans to set up world-class

projects in new realms such as agriculture, fertiliser and petroleum refinery and petrochemicals. In fact, this has turned the country from being the world’s largest or second largest cement importer in the world, to being an exporter of cement. Similarly, the country has turned from being an importer of fertiliser to an exporter of fertiliser.

Supporting the Group in its growth is Group Vice President Devakumar V. G. Edwin, who joined the business in 1991 to focus on the manufacturing arm of the business.

“I’ve had the privilege of building and scaling every business pillar we’ve established in the last 33 years,” shared Devakumar, “it’s given me a unique opportunity to learn the complexities of each sector, and adapting to them”.

The Pursuit of Self Reliance

In a transformational move for the business, Dangote, overseen by Devakumar, inaugurated its flagship petrochemical complex in May 2023 in an investment of over US$19 billion.

The Dangote Petrochemical Complex consists of Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemical Plant, located in the Dangote Industries Free Zone in IbejuLekki, Lagos, and covering a land area of approximately 2,735 hectares.

The project boasts many opportunities for both Dangote and Nigeria, including supplying the entirety of Nigeria’s domestic fuel demand with just 46% of its production capacity.

“The remaining 54% of production can be exported, offering significant financial gains as well as putting both Nigeria and Dangote on the map for petrochemical production,” shared Devkumar.

Additionally, the project has developed 135,000 jobs in the region (both direct and indirect), helping to boost the local economy and financial stability for the employees.

DANGOTE PETROLEUM REFINERY

One of the bigger challenges for Dangote in the progression of the Dangote Petrochemical Complex was finding an EPC contractor which would be able to fully meet the demands of the project.

“We decided to create our own EPC company to meet our needs. This is something which has not been done by major industry players such as Shell, Exxon Mobil, Chevron or Total. So we took up the challenge and we were successful in executing this project,” said Devakumar. And, true to Dangote form, the development of its EPC arm has seen it become one of the largest in terms of capacity, boasting 2,600 civil construction equipment, including 350 cranes.

Lack of infrastructure in the region saw Dangote build its own port and road, granite quarry, ready-mix concrete facility, welding gases plant, etc..

“Understanding the complexities of the region meant we were able to foresee the challenges ahead and plan for them, something we believe would impact the speed at which an external contractor

could complete the project,” explained Devakumar.

A business which is always one step ahead, Dangote had initially left availability at the facility to double its production capacity. However, as Devakumar highlighted, “global thinking is changing”.

“We have decided that we will utilise this potential expansion to reinvest into new business streams which are currently imported into the Sub Sahara,” explained Devakumar, “this includes linear alkyl benzene production which can be used in detergent, base oils to support the production of engine oil and lubricants, and polyethylene. These are an example of some of the great opportunities we have for future expansion once the refinery has been stabilised,” he continued,

At full production, the facility will process about 650,000 barrels of crude oil daily, transported via sub-sea pipelines from the SPMs which will receive the crude oil ships, whereas the natural gas will be sourced from the pipeline from the Niger Delta, to supply the fertiliser factory (which

As a system provider, Coperion has the unique benefit of offering and merging all the essential process steps of the dry end package in one place. Coperion’s portfolio includes all equipment and engineering services from the reactor outlet to bagging, container or railcar loading. This encompasses the conventional packages of extrusion, material handling, conveying and additive feeding systems. www.coperion.com

DANGOTE PETROLEUM REFINERY

Apart of Coperion's activities in the food/ nutrition, minerals, battery, recycling and compounding market, Coperion is known for reliable, high-capacity equipment for the polyolefin industry. It is currently developing its relationship with the Nigerian Dangote Group and its massive refinery close to Lagos, the country’s commercial capital. The Dangote refinery can supply 100% of Nigeria’s fuel requirements and retain extra capacity for export.

Coperion has a proven record in the design and realisation of complete polyolefin production plants. The equipment caters to all polyolefin process steps – from additive feeding, material handling, extrusion, degassing, through pelletizing and storage, even into finished product logistics.

With its expertise in every stage of the polyolefin production chain Coperion’s solutions suit customer requirements by means of first-class process equipment, project management and engineering. Coperion always pursues the goal of realizing the most efficient and cost-effective solutions. Examples in this context are Coperion’s CLC solutions and the color change concept.

CLC stands for Coperion Lean Concepts. The CLC approach can apply to an entire

system, from the reactor outlet to packaging, or it can concentrate on specific areas within the process chain. By optimizing the combination of Coperion’s equipment and designs, Coperion enhances the relevant sections of the plant, focusing not only on CAPEX but also on Total Installed Costs and OPEX, all while maintaining industry leading process warranty.

As for the Color Change Concept it is a very utilitarian concept. Developing countries like Nigeria, and infrastructure projects such as gas pipes, water and sewer pipes worldwide are driving the HDPE market growth. The pipes are of various strengths and colours; black, blue, yellow, orange, and natural.

Coperion’s ZSK technology concept is based on a self-wiping, self-cleaning, co-rotating twin screw extruder. This naturally allows for all the polymer to exit the machine without any “hangup points”. Leveraging this principle, polymers can then be compounded in various colours – without interrupting the production or reactor stoppage.

The strong partnership between Dangote and Coperion is built on trust. With ongoing research and development Coperion’s reliable technologies provide Dangote with a competitive edge.

will produce three million tonnes per annum). 620 MW of electrical power is generated in this complex. The Dangote Group has already commenced the work for doubling the capacity of the fertiliser plant, to 6 million tonnes per annum.

A History of Early Adoption

An early adopter of sustainability, by bringing cement production in-country Dangote saved 1.9 million tonnes of c02 by eradicating shipping. Its oil and gas production will follow in the same footsteps. Again, by producing oil and gas in-country, Dangote will help the country to see savings of 1.5 to two

million tonnes of c02, which would have been produced by importing the products.

Additionally, the business has invested in a fleet of over 3000 new trucks which can travel long distances using CNG, a far less polluting fuel.

Further to this, Dangote has adopted the more stringent standards between the US EPA and the EU environmental regulations and, the refinery is designed to ensure that its products meet Euro 5 standards, providing consumers in Nigeria and beyond with environmentally friendly fuels.

“This means that our fuels will burn 22% less emissions in diesel vehicles and 56% less in petrol, creating a vast improvement,” shared Devakumar. In terms of next steps of sustainability incorporation into the business, Devakumar highlighted that the business continually seeks out future technological advancements.

“The aviation industry is seeking ways to migrate into sustainable fuel, which is coming from vegetable oil with fat and waste. We may look to start producing some and blending into our existing fuel lines,” he explained.

The business is also an early adopter when it comes to digitisation, and has implemented many transformational technologies to aid the business in becoming more efficient.

Amongst its technologies, Dangote

has implemented a fully automated tank farm management system which Devakumar highlighted is “the most advanced software on the market, which very few companies are using,”.

In addition, it uses an advanced system with gantry automation to monitor its trucks, and is taking steps to implement a robotic warehouse management system.

Taking its technology into another realm, Dangote will be using immersive virtual reality for its operator training, as well as digital twin simulation for operational management.

“Something I have witnessed in my many years in business with Dangote is that, if you’re not an early adopter, your business will be left behind,” added Devakumar.

Since then, AMAK has achieved several significant milestones. In 2010, the company commenced construction of the Al Masane Copper Zinc Underground Mine and Process Plant. By 2012, it marked the start of commercial production of copper and zinc concentrates, a major turning point for the company. "Diversifying our product portfolio was crucial," said Geoff, referring to the 2017 addition of gold and silver doré production.

AMAK’s growth continued with the inauguration of the Moyeath orebody in 2019, followed by the commissioning of the Guyan Gold Mine and processing plant in 2021. By 2022, AMAK’s successful IPO on the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) set the stage for further expansion, including the development of the Moyeath processing plant.

“This journey has taken us from one portal and one process plant in 2017 to producing high-quality copper and zinc concentrates, along with gold and silver doré, in just seven years,” Geoff highlighted.

Geoff Day’s Journey in the Mining Industry

Day’s career path mirrors the dynamic nature of AMAK’s growth. With a degree in geochemistry and over 35 years in the mining sector, he has worked across various countries and roles. From his early career in Papua New Guinea to leading technical services for Rio Tinto and serving as COO for Newcrest, Australia’s largest gold company, Day brings a wealth of experience to AMAK. “I have had the privilege to experience all aspects of the mining business,” he reflected, “from exploration and operations to M&A and closure.”

Day’s leadership and vision for AMAK have been instrumental in steering the company through its recent expansions and positioning it for sustainable growth.

Strategic Initiatives for Sustainable Growth

At the core of AMAK's strategy for the future is its focus on sustainable growth and market expansion. “Our Strategic Initiatives for Sustainable Growth and Market Expansion for 2025 and beyond will see us reaching new heights,” Geoff explained. This growth plan includes both operational excellence and an aggressive exploration strategy for AMAK’s 21 licences, covering base and precious metals as well as industrial minerals.

Key initiatives include the development of the Khutainah Gold Project, the expansion of satellite pits to supplement gold production, and the advancement of the Nuham Iron Ore Project. Additionally, AMAK has launched a wholly-owned drilling company to accelerate exploration activities across its licences.

“This strategy not only strengthens our business but also aligns us with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030,” said Geoff. The company’s exploration efforts and its commitment to national procurement are set to drive significant economic benefits for the Kingdom.

Technological and Sustainable Innovation

AMAK is embracing technology and digital transformation to enhance its mining operations. According to Day, the company is leveraging advanced technologies like prospectivity mapping to identify new mineral deposits more efficiently. "The integration of digital tools into our operations is vital for improving efficiency and making more informed decisions," Geoff noted, highlighting upcoming systems like Reconcilor, which will allow real-time tracking of metals from the mine to the smelter.

In terms of sustainability, AMAK is taking significant steps in water and waste management, and exploring the use of hydrogen-powered vehicles to reduce its carbon footprint. “We recycle nearly all our water across the site and are exploring innovative waste management solutions, such as creating topsoil for revegetation programs,” Geoff explained.

AMAK’s Role in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030

AMAK’s growth and strategic initiatives are closely aligned with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which emphasises economic diversification and sustainable development. “Our strategic plan fully supports the Kingdom’s vision by targeting the development of the Kingdom's rich mineral resources and contributing to local economies,” said Geoff.

With a focus on local procurement and employment, AMAK is playing a vital role in fostering the development of Saudi Arabia’s mining industry. The company’s commitment to training and hiring young Saudi engineers is another important aspect of its contribution to Vision 2030. “We see these young professionals as the future of the industry,” Day emphasised.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, Geoff is optimistic about the future of Saudi Arabia’s mining sector. “Saudi Arabia is one of the most progressive and supportive countries for mining I have worked in,” he said. With government incentives, a supportive policy framework, and a wealth of untapped mineral resources, Day believes the Kingdom is well-positioned to become a global mining hub.

AMAK, with its established assets and clear growth plan, aims to be at the forefront of this transformation. “Our focus is to ensure we take full advantage of the opportunities afforded to us, for the benefit of our shareholders, the communities in which we operate, and the Kingdom as a whole,” Geoff concluded.

AMAK’s remarkable journey from its humble beginnings in the 1960s to becoming a key player in Saudi Arabia’s mining sector is a testament to its vision, strategic focus, and commitment to sustainable growth. Under the leadership of Geoff Day, AMAK is set to continue its growth trajectory, contributing to the Kingdom’s economic diversification goals while maintaining its focus on innovation, sustainability, and community development.

REDEFINING HOME INNOVATION FOR THE MODERN WORLD

TGTECH

PROJECT

DIRECTED BY: JAMIE WAITE

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: CATHERINE LAFFERTY

he rolling lush green fields of Worcestershire are rarely associated with world beating innovative industrial designs and products. But it is the home of Grey Technology Ltd. and Nick Grey, its founder and owner. It's quite likely the name Nick Grey rings a bell but it's a certainty that the trading name used by Grey Technology ‘Gtech’, is a household name for many people.

Based in Worcester where he grew up as one of seven children, Nick Grey is the founder/owner of Gtech and it is very much a bleeding edge innovator in its field. His background lies not in the rarified climes of academia and theoretical research but very much in practical problem solving design.

When Grey left Ludlow College, the local sixth form college, he took a job with VAX, the then thriving vacuum cleaner

company. Crucially it was in their design department where he was to thrive and develop as a designer. The next step was to break away and set up his own company.

Initially based in his own home, Grey was to design and develop the world’s first cordless floor sweeper, the SW01 cordless floor sweeper, in 2002. Before long and after a considerable amount of hard work the SW01 went on to be a massive success in both the domestic and European markets.

In the years since Gtech has expanded its range of products adding popular floor sweepers such as the Multi, Pro and HyLite, a range of gardening products such as hedge trimmers and more surprisingly an automated massage bed! More recently the AirRAM, AirRAM K9, AirRAM Platinum and AirRAM 3 cordless

floor sweepers have been added. As well as a range of eBikes aimed at the growing market for similar products.

Not only have Gtech won a number of awards for the innovative designs of their own products they have also designed white gods for other companies. Chances are that you have used a Gtech design even if you do not yet own one of their own products.

From the start Gtech were also pioneering in direct marketing their products combining strategically placed television advertising and a dedicated

website. Unlike many rival companies their customer care is first class and the availability of spare parts and accessories is taken seriously by the company.

The marketplace is however fickle and its locus changes from time to time. Not one to fall behind current trends Nick and Gtech are now placing a growing emphasis on marketing in partnership with influencers. In conversation with us Nick remarked that very often today the shopping experience is completely on line often beginning with a recommendation from a trusted influencer.

Speaking of influencers Nick told us ‘the first thing is just how bright and intelligent they are. And people with good social media following are no different. Bright, super intelligent, and very creative.’ And that Gtech’s approach to working with influencers is ‘pretty like we go about everything. What we always say is we want your honest opinion. Any known problem, even if it's only ever happened once, if we can fix it, we'll fix it. So we say to influencers, say whatever you want about the product, people like your style, they trust you, whatever occurs to you, do that’.

He continued by telling us that, ‘over

recent years the way people choose and buy household appliances has changed at an incredible speed. They trust independent reviews and opinions, even though those are often sponsored. Their entire purchase journey could be on a social media platform. We've realised this game has changed and we don't know anything about these new channels. We're trying to establish ourselves in what is called a digital first approach and finding out what being good at it looks like.’

Having conquered the British and European markets, Gtech is now expanding into the gigantic American

Innovation in delivery

We thrive on innovation and are always looking for the next technological leap forward that delivers more for shippers and shoppers.

We are proud to support Gtech with our innovative delivery service.

What are the key strategies that have allowed DPD to establish itself as a leading courier service in the UK?

Investment and innovation. Over the last 15 years, DPD has consistently invested in its people, its infrastructure and innovation. As a result, DPD now boasts three of the largest automated overnight sortation facilities in Europe, a dedicated International Gateway to support exporters and has added more than 40 brand new, purpose built, state of the art regional depots and distribution centres to its UK-wide network.

successfully since July 2022, using the Cartken robots, which have also since been rolled out in Raunds, Bristol and Lincoln.

Innovation in delivery

We thrive on innovation and are always looking for the next technological leap forward that delivers more for shippers and shoppers.

DPD was the first parcel company to introduce a one-hour delivery window to give recipients advanced notification of exactly when their parcel would be delivered.

We are proud to support Gtech with our innovative delivery service.

Parcel recipients can also access a comprehensive set of ‘inflight options’ enabling them to request a delivery to a safe place or a neighbour if they aren’t going to be home or divert the parcel to one of DPD’s 11,000 plus, Pickup shops and lockers.

How has DPD adapted to the growing demand for e-commerce deliveries in the UK, and what innovations have played a pivotal role in your success?

Creating the scale of operation to handle the volume of parcels has been key and the investment in that network is ongoing. Innovation also means that the operation can work far smarter with greater automation enabling higher volumes of parcels through the network, faster.

Earlier this year, DPD became the first UK parcel delivery company to deploy multi-compartment, fully autonomous ‘Locker’ robots. DPD’s first locker robot was deployed in Milton Keynes, where the company has been operating autonomous robot deliveries

Increasingly the DPD app is now used to enable recipients to tailor their delivery preferences so that their driver is fully briefed before every delivery and can be more efficient. That can include instructions detailing their ‘leave safe’ place including the option to include a photograph of the safe place to help the driver further.

App users can set a preference for deliveries to go to a specific neighbour, and even which neighbours to avoid. Using the DPD App, all consumers can also track their parcel delivery to their doorstep in real time and receive a head's up 'You're next' notification, so there are no surprises.

Customer satisfaction is vital in the delivery industry. How does DPD ensure a seamless delivery experience for businesses and their customers?

For business customers it is about working with them in partnership, to create the best possible delivery service for them and their customers. That includes helping with everything from advising on the packaging to tailoring how we collect their parcels and the data and visibility they have on all deliveries.

In September, DPD won the Customer Care Award for the eighth time in the last ten years at the prestigious Motor Transport Awards – the transport and logistics Oscars.

For parcel recipients, it is a case of constantly refining the service from enabling them to add their precise what3words address so that drivers know the exact building entrance, doorstep, or side passage or creating a ‘More Time

Needed’ option on the DPD app to enable customers to specifically flag to their DPD driver that they need more time to get to the door.

As a result, DPD UK topped the Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert parcel delivery customer satisfaction poll for the ninth time in 2024.

What role has sustainability played in DPD’s growth in the UK market, and can you share specific examples of initiatives or achievements?

Sustainability is an issue that DPD has focussed on for many years. DPD has continued to invest in fleet decarbonisation and over a third of its final mile van fleet (close to 4,000 vans) is now electric.

In late 2023, DPD opened its new flagship London sortation facility, with capacity for 500 electric vehicles. This will enable an all-electric DPD delivery service within London’s north and south circular area. DPD UK confirmed in July that it is on target to deliver a 46% reduction in emissions by the end of 2024, equating to a total reduction of 167,664 tCO2e from the 2020 baseline.

What unique value does DPD offer to UK businesses that differentiates you from other courier services?

Talking to business customers and parcel recipients, we know that sustainability is a major concern and our investment in this area is something that truly differentiates DPD. Being sustainability focused is enshrined in our company DNA – our core values – alongside innovation, inclusivity, being ethical and community spirited.

DPD UK’s parent, the Geopost group, now has two key targets, a near-term of 2030 to reduce emissions by 43% and a Net Zero target of 2040. Both targets are fully

validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and have been key to our decarbonisation strategy.

DPD UK has confirmed that the UK operation is on track with the trajectory required to meet the group targets.

How has the partnership with Gtech contributed to DPD’s reputation and success in serving UK businesses?

A large amount of DPD’s innovation and the need to keep improving is driven by business customers. By talking to customers all the time, we understand what they need and what they would like to see happen in future. We don’t operate in isolation. Our job is to be a delivery partner for Gtech and execute that part of their operation in the way that they would expect to it to be fulfilled for their customers. That is a big responsibility, which is why it has to be a real partnership.

Innovation in delivery

We thrive on innovation and are always looking for the next technological leap forward that delivers more for shippers and shoppers.

We are proud to support Gtech with our innovative delivery service.

Fast moving customers like Gtech, push us to innovate and help us to keep coming up with new and better ways of doing things. We have to keep innovating to keep ahead of customer expectations and when you work with innovative companies, that becomes part of the relationship. We want to keep going back to Gtech and saying “we’ve got something new for you…”

What makes Gtech a standout partner, and how has this collaboration strengthened your commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction?

Gtech’s story is genuinely inspirational and a real home-grown British success. Working with smart, fast-moving UK companies pushes us to keep on improving.

market hence in part the turn to partnering with influencers. For Nick; ‘It's a different world and in some ways, we don't suit the modern world. There's lots of hype and lots of kind of, wow, this is amazing. That's not my way. I don't really like my company overselling. I think learning to use other people, influencers in the modern world to test our products and give honest opinions on them is probably the way to go. I see some companies, and I read their claims about their products, and it just makes me laugh because I've tried their products and I know what I think of them as a consumer.’

Gtech and its owner understand that America is unusual in that they buy a lot of corded upright vacuums at a time when most of the developed world has gone to cordless stick vacuums. As a result of this insight Gtech have designed products which will run for a very long time. They are rightly of the opinion that their Air Arm 3 is a pretty good product for America, but have adapted it so that it will be even better for Americans.

Although a company with a growing international profile and reputation, Gtech has deep roots and strong core values. Values which Nick describes, in his

typically pithy fashion, in relation to Gtech’s first product. ‘Modern vacuum cleaners have gotten worse in the last 15 years.. It astonishes me that people put up with it, but it's almost become accepted that vacuum cleaners are disposable within a relatively short time.

I don't think they should be like that.

I think they should be usable. The Air Arm 3, we address trying to make it the opposite, that you never need to do any maintenance. That's what we try to do with our products rather than add things which might sound good, but aren't that useful to the consumer, we make our products to do their job.’

Gtech makes it a habit to keep attacking, to keep moving forwards. Much like Brentford FC which has entered into a partnership with Gtech which now sponsors their stadium. Nick’s description of Brentford and its values sounds remarkably similar to the terms in which his own company is often described. We can then take Nick seriously when he tells us that Brentford are ‘Down-to-earth, hard-working, they work as a team, they make a big effort to do things properly and being associated with them is a great honour.’

NV HAVENBEHEER SURINAME PORT MANAGEMENT COMPANY

PROJECT DIRECTED BY: GARY SMITH

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: ELOISE PERRY

As the NV Havenbeheer Suriname Port Management Company approaches its 53rd anniversary, it stands as a beacon of resilience and innovation in the region's maritime sector. Operating the Dr. Jules Sedney Port of Paramaribo, this state-owned limited liability company has undergone significant transformations since its inception. The port has evolved into a vital logistics hub, continually adapting to meet the needs of an ever-changing global economy.

The Dr. Jules Sedney Port serves as the primary maritime gateway for Suriname, playing a crucial role in facilitating trade and commerce for decades.

From its early days as a small harbour, it has developed into a landlord port, which means it provides the essential infrastructure and superstructure for its two terminal operators: DPWorld and VSH Transport. This arrangement has allowed the port to optimise its operations while fostering collaboration that ensures efficiency and effectiveness in cargo handling.

NAVIGATING CHANGE AND GROWTH

Leadership and Vision

At the helm of this dynamic company is CEO Andreas Talea, who took on the role in 2013 after serving as president of the board. Holding an MSc in General Economics with a specialisation in statistics, Andreas’ background includes working at the National Bureau of Statistics for several years before leading the port. This extensive experience has equipped him with the necessary skills to spearhead transformative projects and strategies aimed at modernising and enhancing port operations.

As NV Havenbeheer Suriname management company navigates the complexities of modern port operations, it currently boasts a workforce of 192 employees, comprising 125 men and 67 women. Gender diversity is also reflected in management roles, where out of 34, 20 are men and 14 are women. This inclusive workplace culture fosters innovation and strengthens collaborative efforts which are vital for enhancing port services.

Facilities and Services

The port's facilities are designed to cater to a diverse array of maritime needs. The quay, currently measuring 600 metres in length, is set for expansion in both the north and south to accommodate growing trade demands. Construction of the northern extension is well underway, while plans for the south expansion are in their preparatory stages.

Central to port operations is the Dr. Jules Sedney Terminal, complemented by a support facility dedicated to project cargo and an oil jetty for fuel imports. In line with the port's forward-thinking approach, a new trucking centre soon to be completed, alongside a logistics centre financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), promises significant improvements to the logistical chain. As Suriname prepares to delve into oil exploration, the company is also investing in infrastructure designed to support this burgeoning industry.

A Competitive Edge

What distinguishes NV Havenbeheer Suriname from other ports in the Caribbean and South America is its geographical advantage. Located outside the typical trajectories of tropical storms, the port maintains a level of safety and stability that many competitors cannot guarantee. Alongside this, the management company's continuous investment in operational enhancements has not gone unnoticed, with NV Havenbeheer winning several awards that underscore its commitment to excellence in maritime operations.

Collaboration with terminal operators is a cornerstone of the company’s operational philosophy, proving that a public-private partnership (PPP) can yield significant benefits. By working closely with these partners, NV Havenbeheer has become adept at streamlining processes and improving efficiency.

Future Projects and Investments

Looking ahead, NV Havenbeheer is poised for major developments. One of the most significant projects is the establishment of a deep-water port and special economic zone in western Suriname, strategically located near the Guyana border. Encompassing a vast 1,500 hectares, this greenfield project is set to capitalise on the burgeoning oil sector in the Suriname/ Guyana basin, poised to transform the region's economic landscape.

Internally, the port is also investing heavily in upgrading its systems. A new camera surveillance system and a control room are in the final stages of implementation, significantly enhancing security protocols. An automated gate system is also being integrated into the Port Management System, which will facilitate a seamless transition to a Port Community System (PCS) designed to streamline operations further.

PORT

MARITIME NV HAVENBEHEER SURINAME PORT MANAGEMENT COMPANY

Adapting to Challenges

The COVID-19 pandemic brought forth unprecedented challenges, especially for international ports. Although the port is still recovering to pre-pandemic cargo volumes, it is not solely attributing downturns to COVID; the broader economic climate in Suriname has also posed hurdles. However, the company remains optimistic, noting an upward trend that suggests recovery is on the horizon.

Political fluctuations often present additional challenges as changes in government can lead to varying policies and approaches that influence port operations. Yet NV Havenbeheer Suriname views these challenges as opportunities for growth, striving to become more resilient while assisting in the creation of clear policies that lay the groundwork for a strategically healthy future for Suriname’s port sector.

Investing in Human Capital

An organisation's success largely depends on the quality of its workforce and this is an area that Suriname’s port management company has heavily invested into. Having adopted a robust training and development strategy aimed at equipping staff with necessary skills and knowledge, the company is committed to upskilling and developing their teams. By providing in-house training, facilitating participation in webinars, and enabling employees to attend international seminars, the company fosters professional growth. Alongside this, the port has partnered with the Port of Antwerp-Brugge, providing opportunities for workers from different departments to engage in collaborative projects, cultivating a sense of unity while boosting productivity.

NV HAVENBEHEER SURINAME PORT MANAGEMENT COMPANY

“The port of Antwerp has a specialist in every workgroup to assist the workgroups consist of employees of different departments which in itself result in a better integration and understanding of several work processes, but most of all, it gives the employees the ability to interact with each other in a way that would not be possible under normal circumstances resulting in a more cohesive workforce.” Andreas explains to us.

A Vision for the Future

In the coming years, NV Havenbeheer Suriname will embark on a transformative journey. With 11 designated project groups focused on themes such as greening initiatives, digitalisation, and enhancing operational processes, the company is committed to evolving into a more efficient, environmentally-friendly, and community-oriented port.

These projects include innovative waste management solutions, increasing greenery around facilities, and further investments in renewable energy sources such as solar panels. The ambition to adopt electric vehicles and smart technologies reflects a renewed commitment to sustainability.

The CEO envisions a gradual transformation over the next 12 to 18 months, aiming for the successful implementation of these projects. The drive for continuous improvement will not only enhance the port’s operational capabilities but also generate positive impacts across the board, influencing the logistics community in Suriname and beyond.

As NV Havenbeheer Suriname approaches its 53rd year, its leadership remains committed to navigating the evolving landscape of port management. By embracing transformation through strategic investments, upholding a culture of inclusivity, supporting staff development, and committing to sustainability initiatives, the future looks promising. The port is poised to become an even more significant player in the maritime sector, contributing positively to Suriname's economy and positioning itself as an exemplary model among Caribbean and South American ports.

In an ever-changing world, the continuous evolution of NV Havenbeheer Suriname serves as a reminder that challenges can shape opportunities, heralding a bright future for all stakeholders involved. www.havenbeheer.com

DRIVING CHILE’S ECONOMY: CODELCO’S LEADERSHIP IN COPPER, SUSTAINABILITY, AND INNOVATION

CODELCO PROJECT

DIRECTED BY: GARY SMITH

Codelco (Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile) the National Copper Corporation of Chile is a major. driver of the Chilean economy. It is also the largest copper producing company in the world. In addition to copper it also produces small quantities of gold and other rare metals. All of which is carried out through its seven mining divisions: Chuquicatmata, Ministro Hales, Radomiro Tomic, Gabriela Mistral, Salvador, Andina, El Teniente, as well as the Ventanas Smelter and Refinery.

Founded as the state Copper Office in 1951 by President Carlos Ibanez del Campo, Codelco has deeper roots. In fact copper mining in Chile goes back for centuries at Chuquicamata as was shown by the discovery in 1898 of "Copper Man", a mummy dated at about 550 A.D. which was found trapped in an ancient mine shaft by a fall of rock. It was only in the 19th century that mining began in earnest and in 1971 copper mining was taken into state ownership by President Salvador Allende being

From supplying industrial fans for underground ventilation systems to compressors used in critical processes, Howden's solutions have played a key role in increasing productivity, reducing operating costs and improving working conditions at Codelco's mines. The partnership with Codelco also reflects Howden's commitment to sustainability. The company has dedicated itself to developing technologies that not only meet operational needs, but also reduce the environmental impact of mining activities. Our solutions are designed to be energy efficient, environmentally responsible and safe, which further reinforces its commitment to a sustainable future for the industry.

Howden’s Solutions

formalized by decree on April 1st 1976 by the then dictator General Augusto Pinochet.

Ruben Alvarado was appointed CEO on September 1st 2023 and is leading the company forward as well as diversifying its operations. For example in May a massive desalination plant began construction with the aim of supplying Radomiro Tomic, Ministro Hales and Chuquicamata with desalinated water.

Additional milestones attained in 2023 include the signing of a joint venture with Rio Tinto to explore and develop a copper project in the northern Atacama region and as Ruben told us achieving ‘ The Copper Mark certification for our mines, smelters, and refineries, confirms that we are applying the highest sustainability standards’. Numerous development projects are also progressing positively. Not only was the construction of Trepaso Andina completed on April 2, with the delivery of secondary crushing to the operation, but the first phase of the Level One infrastructure of Chuquicamata Underground reached 56.2% progress.

Another sector in which Codelco is making advances is the vital lithium business where an agreement with SQM is in place for the exploitation of lithium in the Salar de Maricunga. Making this possible is the completion of exploration of Codelco properties and the purchase of Lithium Power International (LPI) in March of this year. Given the growing demand for lithium this promises to be a key strategic acquisition. The promise of more growth can also be seen in the company's collaborations with Rio Tinto as well as those with El Abra and Anglo-American, with the latter being the owner of Los Bronces. The recent agreement with Rio Tinto makes the exploration and development of Nuevo Cobre in the Atacama region a reality.

As for the continued exploitation of existing assets Ruben Alvarado has a perspective that annual production in 2024 will be slightly above that for 2023. This being as a result of increased operational continuity at the Andina concentrator, improved performance at the Chuquicamata underground mine, the commissioning of the Rajo Inca project, and improved open-pit mine production at Ministerio Hales. Ruben envisages that ‘starting in 2024 production will begin a long term growth trajectory, progressively increasing until reaching the level of 1.7 million t/y by 2030’.

Key to the growth of production is the Chuquicamata mine complex. The present pit is a conventional truck and shovel operation which is now approaching a point at which it will become uneconomic to continue production as the quality of the orebody reachable using older technologies continues to decline. This development

is not the end of copper production at Chuquicatamata but the prelude to a new epoch of cleaner and more efficient production.

As the open pit at Chuquitamata approaches the end of its life production has continued in the new underground pit having commenced in 2019 and is planned to extend the life of the mine to 2060. The traditional drill and blast drifting method is used in underground mining. The ore is removed through a lengthy process called block-caving. The mine features two air-extraction shafts, five clean air injection ramps, a 7.5 km main access tunnel, and four production levels. Estimates suggest that by 2060 the tunnels will have dug the mine almost 787 meters deeper. An estimated $4.2 billion will be spent on the underground mine, which is expected to generate 140,000 tonnes of ore every day. It is anticipated that the mine will yield 18,000 tpa of fine molybdenum and 366,000 tpa of copper.

El Teniente underground mine is perhaps the largest underground copper mine in the world with a history of production stretching back to 1818. Today it is the largest division of Codelco in operation with over 3,000 kilometres (1,900 mi) of underground drifts. Production statistics are similarly impressive with around 350,000 fine metric tons (ft) of copper mined each year from El Teniente alone. As a result of the New Mine Level structural project, which began in 2011, output is scheduled to increase in the future without impeding ongoing production as more ore is extracted from beneath the 2,200-meterhigh hill.

As production grows due to modern techniques, that same new technology not only improves efficiency and reduces operational costs but also ensures a cleaner and greener production process. Codelco already integrates robotics, increased levels of automation and advanced analytics into its operations, which has led to a greater gender balance in the workforce, but now utilizes Integrated Operations Centres located at a distance from their primary operations. For example, 280 rock breakers, LHDs, hoppers, and semi-autonomous or teleoperated trains for the underground mines of Chuquicamata, Andina, and El Teniente.

Ahead of the game Codelco are as CEO Ruben Alvarado recently pointed out Codelco is working with Komatsu on a safer tunnelling machine that will eliminate explosives and allows for resource development in a sustainable manner. In addition to which Ruben told us that they are ‘involved in the joint development with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and Enaex of an industrial pilot for a green corridor to transport copper concentrates from Chile, using a new technology of ships powered by green ammonia’. The future for Codelco looks green and productive.

THE QATARI AIRPORT TAKING PIVOTAL STRIDES IN THE INDUSTRY

HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AVIATIONS

HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

PROJECT DIRECTED BY: GARY SMITH

ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: ELOISE PERRY

As of Q3 2024, Hamad International Airport (HIA) has achieved remarkable growth, serving over 137 million passengers. This milestone reflects a substantial 26.84% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same period last year, solidifying HIA’s status as one of the busiest airports in the world.

In 2024, Qatar continues to break tourism records. The country witnessed an astonishing 1.163 million visitors by mid-March, marking a staggering 268% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023. Notably, 45% of these tourists arrived by air, highlighting Hamad International Airport’s crucial role in the nation’s travel and tourism sector.

Digital Travel: providing a seamless and secure traveling experience at major sporting events

SITA, a global IT provider specializing in aviation, has been a pivotal force in ensuring the seamless execution of major global sporting and religious events for over 35 years. Beginning with the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where SITA introduced the world's first common use terminal equipment at Los Angeles International Airport, the company has consistently played a critical role in managing the complex logistics of these events.

The latest testament to SITA's expertise came during the 2022 World Cup hosted by Qatar. With over 3.4 million spectators attending 64 matches and 1.4 million coming from various corners of the globe, the logistical challenge was enormous.

Hamad International Airport and Doha International Airport saw a staggering 43,600 aircraft movements in November and December alone. To tackle this influx efficiently, SITA worked closely with the Government of the State of Qatar, Hamad International Airport, and Qatar Airways.

One of the key elements ensuring a smooth entry and exit process was SITA's Advance Passenger Processing (APP) at the border. This technology enabled realtime determination of a passenger's border security status during check-in, streamlining the process and avoiding complications at the destination border. Pre-clearance not only minimized passenger hassle but also reduced the burden on airlines for potential repatriation costs.

The integration of hotels into the system, coupled with the issuance of the digital Hayya Card to spectators, further enhanced the visitor experience. The Hayya Card facilitated quick and secure entry into the country, as well as easy access to transportation and venues. SITA's expertise in digital identity and authorization played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth and secure flow of fans throughout the country.

Consistently focused on digital advancements, Hamad International Airport leveraged on SITA’s solutions ranging from SITA CUTE (Common Use self service systems), Kiosks, Electronic gates with future proof biometric technologies. The SITA Airport Management system allowed the airport to optimize resources, allocate efficiently, and reduce flight delays and bottlenecks during the World Cup.

The digital future of Hamad International Airport also saw the implementation of SITA Smart Path, a biometrics, selfservice, and mobile-enabled platform. This innovation, with the tagline 'Your face is your passport and boarding pass,' enabled fast and touchless identity verification, contributing to increased throughput of travelers at the airport.

As part of its broader smart airport program, Hamad International Airport launched a digital twin initiative with SITA, combining 3D modeling, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. This initiative, recognized with the 'Smart Solution of the Year' accolade at the Qatar IT Business Awards, provides a real-time view of airport operations, optimizing resources and streamlining decision-making processes.

SITA's long-standing involvement in major sporting and religious events, including the Olympics, Formula 1, and the Hajj, underscores its role as a crucial player in the seamless execution of these global gatherings. With a track record that includes events like the Sydney 2000 Olympics, South Africa World Cup 2010, and Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, SITA continues to set its sights on providing cutting-edge border and passenger technology for future major events worldwide.

Architecture

Shaping Tomorrow: 11 Architecture Projects Redefining the World in 2025

Travel

The Ultimate in Luxury How Private Cruises Are Transforming High-End Travel

2025 THE YEAR OF SOUND BATHS, FISHERMAN CHIC, AND AI PERSONAL TRAINERS

As we dive headfirst into 2025, the air feels charged with the promise of change—both sublime and slightly absurd. With wellness trends taking center stage and fashion making bold (and sometimes bizarre) statements, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of experimentation, self-expression, and an occasional return to childhood nostalgia. From sound baths to sardine tattoos, here's a guide to the trends predicted to define the year ahead.

Goodbye Fillers, Hello Natural Beauty

Injectable cosmetic treatments have had their moment, but 2025 will see a mass exodus from dermal fillers.

Aesthetician Dr. Ed Robinson observes a growing trend of clients dissolving their fillers, citing dissatisfaction with overly plumped “pillow faces.” Celebrities have already led the charge, and everyday beauty enthusiasts are following suit. The natural, untouched look is making a comeback, signaling a shift toward selfacceptance and timeless beauty.

2025 LIFE, HEALTH, AND FASHION

The Rise of Fisherman Chic

You don’t need to live near water to embrace the "fisherman aesthetic."

Inspired by rugged coastal wear, this trend incorporates yellow raincoats, beige cable-knit sweaters, and leather fisherman sandals into everyday fashion. Pinterest has reported surging interest in “fisherman sandals” and even “sardine tattoos,” suggesting a maritime moment is upon us. Whether you call it practical or quirky, one thing's certain: it’s reeling in the masses.

Animal Print Takes Over the Jungle Leopard print had its claws in 2024, but 2025 will unleash an entire menagerie of patterns. From crocodile to giraffe, animal prints are being hailed as the new neutral, offering versatility and boldness in equal measure. Fashion insiders, like Simone Oloman of Need It For Tonight, predict these prints will become wardrobe staples, effortlessly elevating outfits while maintaining a playful edge.

2025 LIFE, HEALTH, AND FASHION

Wellness in Full Harmony: The Sound Healing Boom Move over, reformer Pilates; sound healing is the new zen. This centuries-old practice uses vibrations and tones from instruments like Tibetan singing bowls and gongs to soothe the nervous system and promote well-being. Trendy sound baths are popping up in wellness centers, and even iconic venues like the Royal Albert Hall are hosting immersive sound healing events. Expect your lunch break to sound like a meditation retreat as this calming therapy takes over the wellness scene.

Beige is Out: Color and Chaos are In

The minimalist "clean girl aesthetic" that dominated 2024 is making way for bold prints, vibrant colors, and louder personal statements in 2025. Homes will shed their millennial-grey interiors, and fashion will rebel against muted tones. Whether through statement pieces or playful makeup, the year is shaping up to be anything but boring.

Chunky Highlights Return

Remember the bold, streaky highlights of the 2000s? They’re back. Avril Lavigne’s signature pink stripes have already made a splash, signaling a resurgence of high-contrast hair trends. Subtle balayage will take a backseat as people opt for edgy, eye-catching styles reminiscent of Y2K pop-punk days.

The Wellness Coffee Craze Matcha was just the beginning. The 2025 wellness beverage market will expand to include coffee alternatives infused with supplements like collagen, magnesium, and Lion’s Mane mushrooms. Gen Z, with its focus on health-conscious living, is driving this movement, trading jitter-inducing espressos for nutrient-packed drinks. Brands like DIRTEA are leading the charge, offering mushroom coffee blends designed to boost energy and wellness in one sip.

Fashion

Gets Playful with Nursery School-Core 2025 fashion will channel childhood nostalgia, embracing pastel palettes, Mary Jane shoes, and doll-like proportions. Dubbed “All Dolled Up” by Pinterest, this trend blends whimsy and creativity, making life feel like a page out of a storybook. Think charming necklaces, cute-core room décor, and playful makeup—all inspired by the innocence of a three-yearold’s wardrobe.

LIFE, HEALTH, AND FASHION

Psychics: The New Decision-Makers

Angel numbers captivated us in 2024, but this year, we’ll seek wisdom from real-life psychics. As Sarah Lloyd, co-founder of the wellness festival Mind Body Spirit, notes, more people are turning to intuitive practitioners for clarity and validation in their personal lives. Whether it’s life advice or a peek into the future, this spiritual trend is all about reconnecting with inner guidance.

AI Takes Over Personal Training

Say goodbye to human trainers and hello to AI-powered fitness coaches. Apps like Freeletics’ Coach+ offer real-time guidance and motivation, turning workouts into hyper-personalized experiences. As wearable tech and connected equipment become more sophisticated, AI trainers promise to revolutionize the way we exercise—making fitness more accessible, responsive, and efficient.

Final Thoughts

In 2025, trends are more transient and eclectic than ever before. The only rule is not to get too attached. Whether you're dissolving fillers, sipping mushroom lattes, or wearing fisherman sandals with a sardine tattoo, this year promises an exciting mix of the grounded and the fantastical. So go ahead: embrace the trends, laugh at the absurdity, and make 2025 your most adventurous year yet.

11 Architecture Projects

Redefining the World in 2025

As the architecture world balances grand feats of engineering with the elegance of thoughtful design, 2025 promises a striking array of projects destined to leave their mark. From expansive infrastructure to intimate, eco-conscious spaces, these 11 architectural marvels exemplify the industry’s dual pursuit of ambition and sustainability. Let’s dive into the projects shaping the global landscape this year.

1. New Sydney Fish Market, Australia

In Sydney’s Blackwattle Bay, the thirdlargest fish market in the world is set to open its doors after eight years of development. Designed by 3XN Architects and BVN, this four-floor facility merges functional wholesale operations with a tourist-friendly layout. Visitors can enjoy a “multi-sensory” experience in a market hall and auction space while appreciating a distinctive undulating roof featuring 350 solar panels. Beyond its fish market roots, the development promises to rejuvenate the harbor area with shops, restaurants, a promenade, and an urban park.

2. The Grand Ring, Osaka, Japan

Expo 2025 in Osaka will welcome millions to a site anchored by the Grand Ring, a vast circular wooden structure spanning over 1.2 miles. Created by Sou Fujimoto, this timber marvel incorporates local cedar and cypress, echoing Japan’s ancient temple-building techniques. As one of the world’s largest wooden buildings, the Grand Ring offers an innovative alternative to concrete construction and raises questions about its future preservation post-expo.

3. Life and Mind Building, Oxford, UK

The University of Oxford’s largest construction project to date brings experimental psychology, plant sciences, and zoology under one roof. The 270,000-square-foot Life and Mind Building emphasizes collaboration with flexible lab spaces and a public plaza for informal interactions. Designed by NBBJ, its stone facades and projected buttresses offer a modern nod to Oxford’s iconic Gothic architecture.

4. Canadian School, Cholula, Mexico

Nestled in the shadow of the Popocatépetl volcano, this serene campus by Sordo Madaleno blends seamlessly into its surroundings. 6. South Station Redevelopment, Boston, USA

Boston’s busiest transport hub has undergone a transformative expansion. The historic 1899 Classical Revival station now coexists with a 51-story glass skyscraper by Pelli Clarke & Partners. The tower’s sculptural design contrasts sharply with the station’s weathered stone facade, while the revamped concourse welcomes travelers into an airy and grand space.

8. Urban Glen, Hangzhou, China

Ole Scheeren’s latest project, Urban Glen, reimagines urban space in Hangzhou with two cascading towers inspired by the city’s natural hills. Housing offices, hotels, and public spaces, the stepped design creates a manmade valley featuring roof terraces, shops, and art installations, demonstrating a seamless integration of architecture and nature.

9. Riyadh Metro, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s long-awaited metro system will reshape the capital’s transportation with six lines and 85 striking stations. Among them, Snøhetta’s Qasr Al Hokm station stands out with a stainless-steel canopy designed to optimize natural light and shade. This ambitious project aims to transport 3.6 million passengers daily, transforming mobility in Riyadh.

10. Skypark Business Center, Luxembourg

Luxembourg pushes the boundaries of hybrid timber architecture with Skypark Business Center, a striking structure by BIG. Featuring over 542,000 cubic feet of timber and a copper facade made of 80% recycled metal, the building’s unique design alternates between zigzagging strips, ensuring every occupant is close to green terraces. This eco-conscious project includes offices, shops, and a hotel, opening February 2025.

11. Danjiang Bridge, Taipei, Taiwan

Zaha Hadid Architects’ Danjiang Bridge connects major highways over the Tamsui River with an elegant, asymmetrical design supported by a single concrete mast.
