WELCOME TO THE GOLD COAST
Gold Coast Airport Marathon
I have been training on the Gold Coast for 13 years and can’t think of a better place to live and train! I invite you to consider the Gold Coast as a training centre for your high performance sporting program. Every year, millions of visitors come to Gold Coast City to experience our world famous beaches and the green behind the gold in our famous hinterland. As one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, we have a population of 515,000.
to a specific department within the Economic Development Branch to be a one stop shop for national and international sporting teams. Sport Gold Coast can assist squads with location enquiries, facilities, sports science, accommodation and more.
As a centre for sporting excellence, we have a proud sporting tradition and a dynamic can-do attitude. Sporting teams that choose to train on the Gold Coast can access our natural resources and purpose built facilities to assist with preparation for major competition.
The Gold Coast’s relaxed lifestyle and diverse attractions continue to make the region one of Australia’s most popular and enduring tourism destinations.
Excellent facilities, expert sports science capabilities and dedicated sport friendly accommodation make training in our city cost effective and enjoyable. In recognition of the importance we place on attracting and securing high performance sporting teams, the City of Gold Coast has dedicated resources
4
We are committed to sharing our success with you and providing information about our great city and what we can offer.
Tom Tate
Mayor of the City of Gold Coast
My career highlights include winning a gold medal at the World Youth Games in 2003, a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, becoming world champion (100m hurdles) at the 2011 World Athletics Championships in South Korea and achieving the ultimate goal of winning a gold medal at the London Olympic Games in 2012. I attribute part of my success to the training and coaching I have received on the Gold Coast. The warm climate, the beaches and hundreds of parks, as well as the top quality local sports facilities provide the perfect training environment.
The Gold Coast offers easy access via Gold Coast and Brisbane international airports. We are a world famous holiday destination, with a variety of available sports specific accommodation venues and plenty of activities to add to training camp programs. I think the Gold Coast is the perfect choice for high performance sports training camps - but don’t just take my word for it, come and see for yourself. What are you waiting for?
Sally Pearson Olympic Gold Medallist 2012
As a Gold Coast athlete competing internationally, I am thrilled about the upcoming Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™ and believe they will be a major driver for sports development in the city. 5
AUSTRALIA’S BEST TRAINING LOCATION
Gold Coast City is widely acknowledged as one of the best sports training locations in the world. Fabulous weather, superb facilities, sports science specialists and a welcoming local community combine to make the region ideal for sports training. Queensland and interstate sporting teams have enjoyed the benefits of training on the Gold Coast for many years, but the 2000 Sydney Olympics opened the doors for teams from around the world. More than 1300 athletes from 15 countries trained in the city during the lead up to the games. Since then a growing number of sporting teams have flocked to the Gold Coast time and again. World class training venues are within minutes of two international airports. As well as boasting Olympic-standard swimming pools and athletics facilities, the Gold Coast also offers incredible cross-training locations.
Sporting teams can make use of 52 kilometres of sandy beaches with a 36 kilometre network of pathways, stretching from the Gold Coast Seaway in the north, to the Point Danger lighthouse in the south. Alternatively, teams can head to the hinterland and train on several leafy rainforest tracks. Great weather means sporting teams are able to train outdoors more often. The region receives an average of 10 hours sunshine a day for approximately 300 days a year.
