THE RESURGENCE of IPOs in 2014 THE RISE OF MOBILE in KSA

MOBILY Moves to Take Pole Position in the Mobile and ICT Market

August 2014

AHMED ELSHRIF IT expert and Kronos Director

edito r ’ s comme n t

The month of mobile A u g u s t s e e s u s s t e p into the world of mobile in the Middle East, with a special focus on regional leader, Saudi Arabia. Following a feature on the rise of mobile in the country with expert comment from Ciena, we go behind the scenes of industry behemoth Mobily in our flagship company profile with senior executive, Taher AlDabbagh. Staying in the Middle East networking domain, I discuss with marketing specialists Caliber why business in the region should consider making the most of Arabic web content - an undoubted gap in the market as only two percent of all online material is in the native tongue of one of the world’s wealthiest population groups. Our business leader Ahmed ElShrif is also active in the Middle East as regional director of IT experts Kronos. Back in Europe, the re-emergence of the IPO market in the UK is charted, and finally we run down 10 of the best companies to work for in the continent.

Enjoy the Issue!

Q&A: Who’s the Boss

Globetrotting Kronos Director is equally at home with books as he is with gadgets Ahmed ElShrif of Kronos Middle East has scoured the world during his illustrious computing career, reinforcing his affirmation that the people side of business comes first W r i t t e n b y : T o m W a d lo w

Ahmed ElShrif is Middle East Director of Workforce Management Solutions specialists Kronos, with experience across the globe from Oceania to Asia and Europe before taking on his current role. We asked the 46-year-old, among other things, what this worldwide adventure has taught him. BR EME: Where were you educated? What subjects did you enjoy or excel at away from IT? AE: I was fortunate to receive a multicultural educational background. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Statistics with a minor in Mathematics from Kuwait University. I also hold a Management Certificate from the Australian Graduate School of Management. Beyond formal classroom education, I followed numerous courses to strengthen and sharpen my sales, presentation, negotiation and communications skills. Although IT was one of my favourite subjects (quite unsurprisingly where I ended up), I very much enjoyed human science 9

Q&A: Who’s the Boss subjects specifically: leadership/ management and history. This allowed me to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the “human/ people” side of business that has proved decisive in my career. BR EME: What led you into the world of IT and business management software? AE: When I graduated from high school, most of my colleagues wanted to study medicine or engineering as this was the trend then. Nobody was interested in IT. I, on the other

hand, wanted to do something different and actually saw in IT a great way to combine my passion for Management and Sales and apply it to human-related topics – as opposed to traditionally technical ones. That’s a path I’m happy I have taken as it has led me to be working with many visionary organisations in different industries and countries. BR EME: Are you a tech/gadget man in the home? If so, what is your favourite piece of technology you use away from work? AE: My kids are the geeks at home. I like to take a simple yet effective approach to IT just like my clients. It would not come as a surprise to anybody who knows me well that my favourite piece of technology away from work is actually… a book!

As Ahmed tracks the progress of his current projects, he mentions how important it is to have a positive work/life balance and that his free time is for his family and their relaxation

BR EME: Mac or PC? AE: Personally, I use PC for formal heavy work such as proposals, presentations, etc. However, I find iPhone/iPad great for mobility purpose as I need to stay on top of my work on-the-move by communicating with my team, partners and clients through emails, chats and others. BR EME: What has working across several continents taught you? AE: Working across several continents and with multinational teams has taught me to assume nothing and

question everything when it comes to business. Any minor assumption can have severe impact on your job, your career and your company. That is why you need to adopt a critical approach to everything without taking things for granted. On a more personal level, my work experience taught me to celebrate differences and embrace the beauty of diversity. You have to be modest in the approach you take when dealing with other people and actually believe that everyone has something to contribute and teach you. Also, having 11

Q&A: Who’s the Boss great listening skills are crucial in building bridges across differences. BR EME: Who or what has been your biggest influence during your career? AE: My career has given me the opportunity to encounter so many different people from different backgrounds, and these have all in some way influenced the person I am today. From business executives, to colleagues and customers, I have learned so much. Another memorable and influential moment in my career was attending a coaching session by Stephen Covey, the author of “The Seven Habits of the Highly Effective People”. Covey’s disciplines truly resonate with me as he has inspired millions of people around the world to achieve their goals by maintaining ethical principles of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity. BR EME: What motivates you? AE: I am a very competitive person by nature and I always aim to do my very best in anything I set out to achieve be it business or personal. My biggest competitive 12

edge being that I am always willing to learn and adapt. This really motivates me to excel at what I do. BR EME: What was the best and worst piece of advice you ever received? AE: I would say the best piece of advice I was ever given was to sign-up for the Stephen Covey session which I mentioned earlier. It was a truly inspiring course and I recommend anyone to have a read at his best-seller: “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” The worst piece of advice I was ever given was to move to a large IT company which was solid financially and had a great reputation. Doesn’t sound too bad? The issue was that the organisation lacked a true “Sales” culture and was more focused on the technical aspects of the business. As a people person, I did not feel I was in the right environment and didn’t see this company challenging me as an individual. BR EME: What do you do in your free time? AE: I always try to make the most of my free time when it’s available

and spend as much of it as possible with my family and reading books – which you will have guessed by now, I enjoy very much. BR EME: What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs in your industry? AE: For any entrepreneur I would give the following advice: 1. Never be afraid to take risks. You’ve got to go out on a limb sometimes because that’s where the fruit is. 2. Empty pockets never held anyone back, only empty heads or empty hearts can do that. I also advise them to take the time to read biographies of great entrepreneurs from all walks of life, not just business. It is a strong moral boost to read the highs and lows of kindred spirits, and to see that the path to success is often paved by many challenges, fears and the lessons learned from the same. Keeping to my simple direct approach, one of my favourites is “The One Minute Entrepreneur” by Ken Blanchard, Don Hutson and Ethan Willis. I highly recommend it: light yet so rich. 13

The resurgence of the IPO market in 2014 Justin Cooper, CEO of Shareholder Solutions, Capita Asset Services, details how the Initial Public Offering scene has picked up markedly in the UK since the financial crash and why it is important that this trend continues

14

August 2014

15

F IN A NCE The pace may have seen a summer slowdown, but the IPO market has come an awful long way since the financial crash. The first five months of the year saw the highest level of listings since 2007, marking an important turnaround for activity when compared to the doldrums of the recession. In 2009, just £600m was raised on the London Stock Exchange. Nearly ten times this level was raised by April alone in 2014. Following the listing of Royal Mail and Merlin Entertainments last year, high profile names such as AO World, McColls and Just Eat followed suit in early 2014, with Saga listing in May and TSB in June. While activity has calmed following the initial surge at the start of the year, we anticipate it will strengthen again in the remainder of 2014. Picking up Looking at the pipeline of companies considering an IPO, there is still a lot of potential new supply over the next 12 months – and especially so if the FTSE sees a traditional end of year rally. We initially forecast last year that the amount raised by IPOs 16

August 2014

Merlin’s value was listed as £3bn when it launched its IPO would be 50 percent higher in 2014 than it was in 2013, but the underlying strength of the market suggests it could be significantly higher than this by year end. The resurgence of the IPO market in 2014 is welcome news. IPOs perform a vital function, boosting the variety of investment opportunities for both retail and

‘Following the listing of Royal Mail and Merlin Entertainments last year, high profile names such as AO World, McColls and Just Eat followed suit in early 2014, with Saga listing in May and TSB in June’ institutional investors. Moreover, they replace the companies that fade, merge or get taken over. Capita Asset Services’ research shows that a proportion of companies disappear over time even from relatively recent new issues, with M&A (merger and acquisition) activity accounting for the vast majority of the attrition.

Our analysis of companies that that have undertaken an IPO in the last decade found that an average of 77 percent of firms are still listed on the London Stock Exchange. Of the 23 percent that are no longer listed, around 18 percent have either been acquired or involved in a merger, with the remainder going into administration. 17

F IN A NCE However, it is worth noting that often an acquisition or merger can be as a rescue or means to prevent administration. With this in mind, it’s crucial that companies are continually brought to market, to replenish choice and diversity across the exchange for investors and to give successful entrepreneurs and private equity houses an exit to reinvest their earnings in a new venture. Capital gains The opportunity for capital gains

is a draw for investors, and pricing is a key component new issuers must consider in order to tap into investor demand, on top of clearly communicating the strong underlying fundamentals of the company. Capita Asset Services’ analysis showed that in their first month, new listings outperformed the FTSE All Share by seven percent on average over the last 10 years. The good news for investors doesn’t stop there; after six months listings were 11.5 percent ahead, and after The Royal Mail’s IPO was valued at £3.3bn, significantly less than if its extensive prime property portfolio had also been included

a year an average listing outpaced the index by 10.5 percent. 2014 is not following the historic trend. With such a pent up supply of companies to list, the sheer volume of companies coming to market has meant fund managers have been spoiled for choice. Although the market is a far cry from where we were in 2009, there is not quite the same golden combination of a bull market and thin supply of issues seen last year which drove very strong initial performance. That’s not to say it won’t return to trend over the longer-term, so long as the companies coming to market are reasonably valued and are able to demonstrate their robust business propositions. Later years Looking at the later years of an IPO, the probability of a company outperforming the wider index inevitably falls, but the gains by those that outperform outweigh the losses. Two years on from listing, 57 percent of companies see slower growth than the index, however as an average, there is still an outperformance of 7.6 percent

Glencore raised ÂŁ6.1bn when it was initially launched on the LSE meaning a small number are doing disproportionately well. Five years on, companies should be seen as fully fledged listed entities, rather than new issues. At this point, the trend continues with 32 percent of companies outperforming the market. However, on average, outperformance continues; this time at 3.7 percent, even accounting for companies that were bought out or went into administration. 20

‘Not only do they bring fresh blood to market for investors, presenting opportunities to diversify, but they act as a key exit strategy for current owners or as a means to raise new capital for investment’

The opportunity for capital growth is not the only key draw for investors – many are drawn to the long-term income potential a new listed company may provide. The boom in commodity prices, following the puncturing of the credit bubble, triggered a surge in IPO activity from resources firms, culminating in the listing of Glencore. To give an example, Glencore International listed on the London Stock Exchange in

2011 raising ÂŁ6.1bn, the largest on LSE records. However, since the float, the giant has paid out ÂŁ2.27bn in dividends to investors. The importance of IPOs to both investors and issuers cannot be understated. Not only do they bring fresh blood to market for investors, presenting opportunities to diversify, but they act as a key exit strategy for current owners or as a means to raise new capital for investment.

Inside Saudi Arabia’s

mobile network boom As mobile continues to explode in the Kingdom and Middle East as a whole, we ask key network and infrastructure provider Ciena about the demands this creates and why the country has experienced such a rapid growth Written by: T o m W a d lo w

TECHNOLOGY Mobile is booming in Saudi Arabia. Indeed the entire Middle East is embracing the world of remote connectivity and arsenals of statistics can be used to portray how much of a powerhouse the region is becoming. Take global smartphone penetration rates; the UAE and Saudi Arabia make two of the top three with 73.6 percent and 72.8 percent respectively. Drilling down further, mobile broadband networks account for 63 percent of total mobile connections in Israel, 59 percent in Turkey, 55 percent in the UAE and 54 percent Saudi Arabia. These are higher rates than many so-called developed markets – Western Europe averages around 50 percent.

Omar Alsaied, Middle East Carriers Sales Director

August 2014

Consumers in the region are becoming more demanding, with companies such as network specialists Ciena and service provider Mobily constantly evolving their offerings to keep pace with the upward industry curve. Culture, demographics and economics The mobile market in Saudi Arabia shows no signs of letting up, especially given the average person owns two mobile phones. They are being used everywhere and for almost everything. According to Google’s My Mobile Planet, 58 percent of Saudi smartphone owners use their devices to window-shop, 47 percent track job offers and applications and even 43 percent use their phone to search for new homes. A massive 95 percent watch videos on their mobile. Ciena is modernising networks across Saudi Arabia and the rest of the region so they can adapt to the pressures attached to this proliferating trend. Omar Alsaied, Middle East Carriers Sales Director, pointed towards three key factors as to why Saudi Arabia is showing itself as a global mobile leader. “The region is very young, the

majority of the population is below 30 years old,” he said. “They are all very tech savvy and use social networking, and their expectations of service providers is extremely high.” In the Middle East as a whole, around 45 percent of people are aged under 20 and part of communities embracing family togetherness. “Culturally, we are a very social society,” Alsaied added. “People treasure family gatherings and face to face interaction which is now supported by social networking. Saudi Arabia has

one of the highest numbers of YouTube and Twitter accounts in the region.” “Thirdly, the region is economically very active with huge projects everywhere forcing the network to continue to adapt and make use of mobile technologies. Individuals here have very high buying power also.” The need for networks The demands of individual consumers and businesses alike presses the need for cutting edge networks and mobile infrastructure. 25

TECHNOLOGY Alsaied said: “The past few years have moved on fast from 2G and 3G to 4G and LTE with 50 percent of the mobile data traffic coming from video downloads such as YouTube on peoples’ handsets. The demand for bandwidth is huge in Saudi Arabia.” Networks to carry such demand must be intelligent and have the ability to allow service providers to create new applications and offerings. Alsaied also noted that these networks must have programmable interfaces which enables its users to adapt to the explosive bandwidth in the region. Ciena has been carrying out important work with Mobily, holder of more than 40 percent of the Saudi Arabia’s mobile market and our flagship company profile in this month’s Business

In the mid to long term, huge-scale infrastructure projects promise to uptake the latest mobile networks. “This will not slow down at all,” Alsaied added. “Construction is massive across Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar, the whole region is building new infrastructure and this will consume more and more mobile data.

Why Arabic content is a must for marketing in the Middle East 30

August 2014

Accounting for just two percent of online material, Arabic is a massively untapped market and one which SEO specialist Caliber believes should be exploited W r i t t e n b y : T o m W a d lo w 31

mar k e t i n g All available statistics point towards the Arab world as the next centre of internet boom. The past decade has seen a monumental rise in the numbers of Arabic-speaking people getting online, with as many as 413 million expected to be attuned to the World Wide Web by 2015. Set against the two million of 2000, this represents a rise of 20,650 percent. Even in 2011 there were just 65 million Arabic web users. Couple this enormous growth with the realisation that Arabic speakers form one of the world’s wealthiest population segments and it is staggering to realise that only two percent of digital content can be found in their native tongue. This is a massive disparity, compounded by the fact that in 2012 95 percent of Fortune 500 websites did not have an Arabic version.

As the internet and smartphone explosion gathers more and more momentum in the Middle East region, there is no better time to capture the native market and bring the undoubted clout of digital marketing to the screens of the most economically powerful. High-Caliber content Caliber is a specialist in integrated SEO, content and social marketing, and has started working with clients to provide content experience in both English and native Arabic. Ian Humphreys, Regional Director for the Middle East and protagonist of award-winning content marketing campaigns for some of the world’s biggest brands including Ticketmaster, Tesco and TUI, believes now the time is right to maximise website optimisation by making offerings multilingual. “Arabic content is an area of enormous potential in the Middle

Just two percent of web content is Arabic East,” he said. “It’s the native tongue of the wealthiest and most influential segment of the population, yet most companies ignore it and confine their marketing to English. “Only two percent of digital content is in Arabic and this needs to change. While Arabs can speak and read English, it is always preferable to reach your target demographic in their native tongue.” While the result is preferable for the end user who can surf the web in the own language, it is also viable

for companies concerned with SEO rankings looking to get a step ahead of international competition. Humphreys continued: “Arabic content is a useful approach for website optimisation in this market, primarily by helping your page rank when people search in Arabic. “Google will be much more likely to serve a page in Arabic to a user who searches with those criteria. Currently, the vast majority of searches in the region occur in English, so it isn’t a game-changer but a way to 33

mar k e t i n g gain a small, competitive edge.” Crucial steps Companies looking to extend their internet reach into Arabic, and indeed other languages, need to invest first and foremost in the right people to deliver content in an engaging manner that is accurate in translation and thus primed for SEO. For Humphreys this means finding and developing editors with an appropriate arsenal of language skills. “Companies should invest in excellent multi-lingual editors,” he Multi-Lingual Content Process

‘A superb editor is the heart of any content operation as they set the tone of voice, ensure quality and bring the best out of their writers’ when rankings come into fruition. “If you are starting a business it’s crucial to consider SEO from the outset,” Humphreys added. “Companies generally make a litany of small, hard to avoid errors that

Looking ahead As the Middle East continues to invest heavily in becoming a leading light in the technology field, backed politically by Smart Government initiatives in the likes of the UAE, the potential for digital marketing and e-commerce is patently clear. With more and more people discovering the internet via desktops, tablets and smartphones, the scope for Arabic content could not be greater. “Companies that create wellstructured websites, and invest in SEO and content will distinguish themselves from the competition and make a great deal of money in this rapidly emerging market,” Humphreys said. “As we start the run up to Expo 2020, the Middle East is a very exciting place to be.”

s Mobily enters its tenth year of operating, Saudi Arabia’s second largest provider of mobile phone services has witnessed phenomenal growth which shows no sign of abating as it gears up to be a major player in ICT solutions and take over as market leader. This year the company has earmarked SAR5 billion for infrastructure investment which includes upgrading high-speed networks, information security and data services. This also features major ‘smart cities’ projects such as King Abdullah Economic City and Yanbu Industrial City, while taking advantage of the Saudi demographics, a population of 27 million and an average age of 22 that can’t get enough of its hi-tech services. It has also become the first in the Middle East and Africa to launch its own Cloud Partnership Program as it moves to take advantage of the burgeoning opportunities to provide ICT solutions to businesses. This award-winning company, which has a list of firsts almost as long as its fibre cable network, has thrived on innovation and putting its customers first by meeting their demands with the very best solutions it can muster. It now serves in excess of 22 million subscribers and saw those figures increase fourfold over a six-year period between 2007 and 2013. From the moment of its conception, the company based in Riyadh, which employs 3,600 people, has enjoyed year-on-year growth,

Outside of Palestine, the company is intent on careful yet not insignificant expansion into neighboring territories after seeing promising signs from small-scale operations in Iraq and Jordan. Stepping up The company began operations in 1997 and provides state of the art services to the Palestinian end user, including local and international fixed telephony services, internet, data communications, mobile services and next generation services. Its revenue growth is reflective of achievements operationally. For example, it has doubled fixed broadband speeds for the past few years and is on course to deliver 3.7 megabits a second, seven times the 0.5 speed once common across Palestine. “We now have 2.6 million mobile customers and 400,000 landline customers, and want our customers to get used to using higher speed services,” Aker added. “We also want to take our offerings to outside users.” Paltel’s achievements have come despite tough challenges presented by political restrictions on business, the most significant being the absence of available 3G and equipment import/export limitations. “Data is the future and we are only allowed to use data for our fixed network which limits our growth potential,” Aker said. “The West Bank is a

In 2007 we were selling 26 million tonnes of aggregates, but that dropped by around 30 percent; but now we are starting to climb back up with current sales of 20 million tonnes, explained Russell.

Energy & Cost Saving Solutions

H

ayley Group Plc are a key supplier to the Cemex Group, looking after their MRO, Inventory Management and energy cost saving solutions. One of the biggest challenges facing businesses today is remaining competitive when energy and other costs are rising. Investment in Drivetrain related improvements offer one of the most effective solutions to this problem with fast returns. Hayley offer the complete Drivetrain with products being offered separately or as a complete integrated turnkey solution bespoke for its customer’s applications.

Gearboxes & Electric Motors

Hayley are unique in stocking the Siemens FZG industrial gearbox range in various sizes, which can be built on a 2-day lead-time. These products are stocked at its 25,000 sq. ft. engineering facility, which also offers the refurbishment and repair of any type and size of industrial gearboxes. Completing the Drivetrain Hayley can provide advice and support on a range of Variable Speed Drive applications including energy savings and optimising process control.

We also stock both IE2 and IE3 Electric Motors up to 315kw with off the shelf availability, as well as Geared Motors up to 37kw input power, again, available to be built to meet customer requirements on very short lead times.

Pumps & Dewatering

One of the issues in all quarries is keeping them dry. Pumps are therefore a major part of this process. There are several methods being used, most of which are very expensive and inefficient to run. Hayley Group has brought new pump technology into the industry to drastically reduce cost and save energy. This has also enabled Cemex to adopt a Best Practice for pump replacement through its RMC sites. The objective was to provide a standardisation, more efficient alternative to the pumps being used. Hayley also stock the pumps so they can offer either a same day or next day replacement service anywhere in the UK.

Smartvend®

Another concern that faces many customers is the amount of inventory carried in order to lessen downtime as well as 24/7 access to health and safety products for their workforce. Hayley Group Plc have identified a solution that can reduce the inventory, transaction costs, downtime costs and the supply of health and safety products.

This solution is the introduction of Smartvend®, a simple, affordable, industrial vending machine programme that provides a lean, controlled flow of products to the point of use. This technology enables customers to monitor and track usage of product, allowing a reduction in inventory and the ability to manage assets and access health and safety products 24/7.

The machines are Internet appliances and do not need expensive and complicated software installed, this means they are easy to install and maintain, both done by trained Hayley staff. Customers who have taken onboard the Smartvend® solution have enjoyed benefits such as reduced consumption by 25% or more, immediate product availability, asset control and automated ordering. This has added to the success of Hayley Group Plc in increasing its offer to Cemex and the marketplace through inventory management solutions.

their investment,” he said. “The UK aggregates industry is essential to the economy and our way of life. Our products are what builds roads, houses, schools and hospitals and are essential in the construction of generating facilities for energy and management of water. We need to have a sustainable aggregates industry to safeguard this valuable resource for future generations.” CEMEX spends millions of pounds on all manner of things such as £10m on archaeology unearthing important historical artefacts and £150,000 on protecting a newt colony. Planning fees alone were £1.5million last year just to maintain their current reserves. The cost of restoration is frightening on an annual basis. Russell explained CEMEX’s strategy to become more profitable: “We have analysed every one of our quarries in the UK and we know where our prices need to be to achieve our full cost recovery,” he said. “We have a price roadmap in place setting out where we need to be and how we will get there. “The geology of the UK dictates that not all areas or quarries are the same, but generally we are under valuing our product by around 30 percent. I have been in this industry for nearly 30 years and I feel responsible, but I am fully committed in the coming years to supporting our customers, ensuring their competitiveness, and ultimately achieving prices which will allow us to sustain and grow our business.”

The pioneering precast concrete solutions provider is continually developing new and innovative off-site products that are safer, quicker to install and offer a higher quality finish to traditional construction methods. A good example of this can be seen in its proprietary Easi-Base precast concrete manhole system. All water authorities have now adopted this with its inclusion within ‘Sewers for Adoption seventh edition’. Speaking of the future, and the challenges that lie ahead, FP McCann’s General Manager Andy Cooper said: “We will always come up against companies with a variety of materials competing against concrete.

U

nder the Presidency of Mark Rachovides, The European Association of Mining Industries, Metal Ores & Industrial Minerals (Euromines) is striving to lay to bed assertions of the past to encourage its members about the potential of the future. Mining in Europe, and indeed across the world, has often come in for criticism but through a strong focus on external industry collaboration and internal optimism, the association is well on its way to changing industry standards and consequently, public perceptions. Existing as a not-for-profit organisation in its current form since 1996, Euromines represents more than 40 different metals and minerals, more than 100 companies and about 350,000 jobs across its member states, and

Rachovides is positive that Europe can become a partner of choice within the mining industry. “The important thing through what we do is to point out where mining fits in the value chain and to get away from those old stereotypes,” he said. “We need a balanced, responsible approach to keep the value chains in the EU because it won’t contribute to our renaissance or our future if part of the value chain is being sourced outside when we have the ability to do it here. “We should be doing exploration and mining and processing and supplying to the people that need those raw materials. We can do the whole thing and that should make us the partner of choice because we should be showing ourselves as the leaders in terms of sustainable use of our resources.

Mark Rachovides is a consultant to Eldorado Gold Corporation and until recently was Chairman of Deva Gold, Eldorado’s subsidiary in Romania. He was formerly an Executive Director of European Goldfields which was acquired by Eldorado in early 2012. Rachovides is a well-known specialist in South East Europe and Chairman of the Euromines Gold Group.

“That’s what we want to achieve; to set the standard that’s higher than everyone else.” Present virtues Manufacturing in Europe currently accounts for 75 percent of the EU’s exports and many of these manufactured products depend on raw materials. It is figures like these which the Association aims to make clearer to the business world moving forward.

Mining

“Europe is surprisingly underexplored and underinvested for exploration, but in terms of technology, we’re very advanced, so we are increasingly developing the ability to mine more complex deposits and have more automated machinery,” Rachovides said. “We ultimately look to a future of stateof-the-art modern mining in Europe.” The Association is therefore striving, through affiliations with organisations and

conferences at high profile events, to start getting that positive industry message across. This can only come with a collaborative and integrated drive among its members too though, and Rachovides is adamant that all are responsible in that push and none are burying their heads in the sand. “Most of our members need and do talk more about our good stewardship and the added value that we bring across the spectrum of our activities,” he added. “A lot of the criticisms are the sins of our past and we need to talk more about the virtues of our present and our future. “Our performance today in Europe speaks for itself. We have excellent health and safety records, very low numbers of fatalities and rank very highly in terms of productivity. We invent a lot of technologies used worldwide because we are constructive, responsible, intelligent people.” Globally competitive Structured through a series of committees, comprising a decision-making steering committee, a think-tank policy committee, and some more specialised sector committees – environment, health and safety, emission training standards, communication, gold mining and magnesia production – Euromines is set up to be the recognised representative for mining in Europe; a voice and point of reference in relation to the European institutions, and a sounding board for members regarding

The main goal as a consequence of these ongoing discussions, forums, collaborations with global organisations and monitoring of international trends, is to ensure that the EU maintains and builds upon its position as a responsible and balanced source of minerals. The firm, which is a subsidiary of Israel Chemicals (ICL), has undertook numerous improvement works at the surface too; everything from the ÂŁ16m rock shaft head tower renewal to improve hoisting and capacity potential to 5.3 million tonnes, to logistical improvements at its Tees Port facility. to a previously unheard amount of polyhalite deposit, and is something which makes the organisation unique. It is the only one in the entire world mining the rare material used as a speciality fertilizers. Part of the five-year plan is to ramp up the annual polyhalite production tonnage to 600,000 by 2017. Borehole information on the mine dates as far back as the 1930’s. Planning permission was granted in a joint venture between Chartered Consolidated and ICI Chemicals which started shaft sinking in 1969. The first potash were hoisted in 1973, fullproduction came about in 1975 but it was not until recently that polyhalite started to be extracted commercially. Baines said: “We put two drifts down from the current salt horizon within the mine, in the central area, about three years ago now. “There’s millions of tonnes of it and at this stage, its looks relatively stable and strong, and we have proved you can machine cut it and support the infrastructure very well. “The compressive strength can be up to 150mpa compared 30mpa for the potash so it is significantly stronger but we have been working on it for two years now, and the mine has stood as firm as an office. “We also have a third mineral called carnallite so we have multiple options that take different processes which gives us much more flexibility

The firm’s main product is 2-4mm granular potash made from a compaction process, and fertilizers are very much the core product. It can also mine anything between 500,000 and one million tonnes of rock salt, helping to de-ice UK and US roads in winter time. Company development New technology and equipment such as the flexible conveyor train, which helps to mine a much greater tonnage, enables Cleveland Potash to achieve improved efficiency. He added: “A massive strategic advantage from a logistics sense is being just 30 kilometres away from the deep-water Port in Middlesbrough, as it can load anything from 1,100 tonne to 65,000 tonne Panamax vessels at Tees dock. It makes us accessible to a wide range of clients. “Going forward Cleveland Potash will be developing the market for polyhalite, maintaining the level of potash production and looking into carnallite more. August 2014

olt Resources has already invested €60 million in its plan to begin gold and tungsten mining at two sites in Portugal which once under construction will deliver hundreds of jobs for local people, thus helping to boost the country’s economic recovery. The exploration expert expects to spend another €100-130 million to get both projects off the ground which will ultimately require 150 permanent staff when production is underway. Once the flagship exploration projects at Boa Fé and Tabuaço are in production, the incoming cash flow will allow Colt to upscale activity at other Portuguese gold and tungsten sites, as well as abroad. Business Development Manager Luis Martins said: “I want to have both of our mines producing so we can then generate cash flow and invest in our other projects. We want to spread our activities through Europe and the Middle East, and other locations all over the world.” This includes a venture in Pakistan currently being explored by Colt Middle East, where copper mining could also bring in money to boost funds for the projects in Portugal. Founded in Canada in 2007, Colt quickly moved to the Iberian nation on receipt of data from previous operators and the Portuguese government, with whom it shares a highly constructive relationship and vision to turn around economic fortunes.

Martins outlined the importance of impending bankable feasibility studies to the progress of both projects. “We are looking to conclude this by early next year,” he said. “We are developing a resource estimation update and are pretty sure there is huge potential, the bank feasibility study will prove this and encourage investment. The strategy is to start production as soon as possible and generate some cash flow.” “We are open to many avenues of construction and production and for example have had conversations with potential German and Chinese partners about mining at Tabuaço.” Investing in Portugal Several factors combine to explain Colt’s decision to develop the gold and tungsten mining sectors in Portugal. The country has a mining legacy stretching 2,000 years back to Roman times and Martins points to a continuing enthusiasm and acknowledgement of the industry’s importance to the nation’s economic recovery. “In 2012 the government published a new strategy about mineral resources that gives clear political support to the mining sector,” he said. “We have a great relationship with them, and also have a beautiful infrastructure, a very good motorway network and our properties are nearby along with ports and prime rail connections.”

Colt has also been able to draw vital investment from a number of Portuguese sources, part of a batch of investors including a Canadian pension fund and several institutions and individuals from Germany, Switzerland, China and Hong Kong. Construction company Teixeira Duarte is a key partner. “They are a big construction group working not only here but in Brazil and Angola,” Martins added. “They have a mining division which is developing several works for Portugal’s main copper mine Neves-Corvo and can help us to develop our projects. All our investors share our view and strategy and feel that they will see a good reward on their investment.” So far investment into the two projects has exceeded €60 million with Martins predicting another €100-130 million be needed before both sites become operational, making

World Duty Free Group Revolutionises

its Supply Chain to Meet its Global Needs

To become established in the relatively young travel retail industry requires a comprehensive and flexible supply chain operation which this global company continues to expand and master Written by: Matthew Staff Produced by: Craig Daniels

orld Duty Free Group has extended its global reach over the past eight years through its ever-strengthening industry reputation and some strategic acquisitions, and is now looking to capitalise on recent successes through equally global developments of its supply chain. As a consequence, World Duty Free Group is in a better position than ever to continue its expansion through the tendering of new airport and terminal duty free stores moving forward, and with a logistics and distribution strategy more than capable of keeping up with the growth. Justin Suter, Global Head of Supply Chain and Logistics at World Duty Free Group, said: “When bidding for airports, the whole supply chain and

logistics operation is becoming more and more important because the authorities have really recognised the key role that an efficient system plays in the complex travel retail sector. “They look at how good your supply chain will be and whether you’ll be able to get great onshelf availability and get new products to market quicker than others. “The fact that we’ve got a good supply chain and have received a number of awards over recent years for the quality of our operation is becoming increasingly important.”

trend, with the company striving for consistent best practice, supply times and operational excellence, despite its widespread international presence. “We’ve put in place our new strategy which is really focused around looking at the end-toend supply chain, from supplier to shelf, based on an analysis of the business, where our brand partners are, and where our airports are,” Suter said. With 85 percent of all goods in its shops manufactured across Europe, the construction and development of a brand new distribution centre in Barcelona represents phase one of the three pronged approach that the company now takes towards its global distribution chain. Suter continued: “Over the past 18 months, we have been investing in our new global distribution centre which is a significantly bigger operation than our previous one. This gives us the capacity we need to cater for our ever growing business, as well as the option to talk to our suppliers about using any of these channels without any logistics constraints. “There will also be some instances where our brand partners will already have a distribution network set up, so it makes sense to continue to deliver directly in those cases. Conversely, where brand partners have a less developed supply chain or it makes sense for us to carry one point of stock, our global distribution centre allows our suppliers to scan and deliver everything into there

and we will then deliver it to our stores around the world.” Another development, as part of World Duty Free Group’s commitment to be as flexible and collaborative as possible, involves the establishment of consolidation platforms. These do not carry any stock, but provide the option of bringing numerous suppliers’ goods together and grouping them into full containers to further reduce costs and enhance efficiency. Brand partnerships The diversity and complexities involved in travel retail differ vastly from traditional high street retail practices, with three different stakeholders pivotal to the business, in the form of the stores’ customers, the airport owners, and the brand partners looking to showcase their goods in the shops.

World Duty Free Group

This makes a consistent global model all the more important, especially considering that a large number of World Duty Free Group’s suppliers, or brand partners, are similarly global, and are often bigger than the travel retailer itself. “Typically our big suppliers are the likes of Diageo, L’Oreal, Estée Lauder Companies, Chanel etc, who often have their own travel retail sector within their business,” Suter said. “These kinds of partners see travel retailers like us as the window to their ideal customer market. “So in the case of Chanel for example, a typically affluent demographic who can afford to travel frequently represents exactly the audience they want to have a conversation with through our shops.” With more than 120,000 SKUs, the company is now a pivotal cog in its brand partners’ marketing

strategies, especially in the beauty industry where the industry particularly thrives. To cater for the diversity in goods, cultural differences in product trends and the different timeframes needed to transport goods to its stores, World Duty Free Group has paid special attention to honing its forecasting and replenishment (F&R) system. Suter explained: “We have invested a lot into a leading class F&R system because you need to be able to order the right stock to be delivered into the country, but you also need quick replenishment from the distribution centre into the shops. Global expansion To set itself apart in this dymanic industry requires not just a world class service and accompanying supply chain strategy, but the right personnel too and this is something that World Duty Free Group has been very focused on over the years. The ability to work, think and act globally is a very specific skill that is required to ensure that the same best practices are experienced across all operating continents, where, theoretically, a local supply chain manager could be moved from Helsinki to Vancouver and implement the same strategy and model from the outset. In turn, this core consistency and high standard of expertise will make the inevitable future expansion all the more viable and successful.

anya Foods Co. Ltd is enjoying considerable progress within the Middle East and North Africa regions, and is planning substantial investment to enhance its success in the dairy products industry. Based in Northern Europe, the global dairy giant Arla Foods, producer of the recognizable Lurpak butter, is the parent company of Danya Foods. There is DKK 35 Million worth of investment earmarked for more automation in the production processes, as well as warehouse capacity expansions and automation. Further investments were approved last year to specifically invest in training, systems, process optimisation and production capacity, and the company envisages investments to at least remain the same going forward. Thomas Nordholt, Regional Supply Chain Director at Danya Foods, explained how the company has adopted new technology to help the firm become more efficient. He said: “In the last 12 months Danya has gone from manually operated to almost fully automated production. Part of our main investment is purely being able to produce more processed cheese. “Another part of it is to automate existing production facilities to reduce conversion costs. For instance, where the company had manual labourers empty pallets, wash glasses before the filling lines, fill boxes and cartons, then pack them onto pallets it now has robotic machinery for all of this.

S upp l y C h ai n / food

A conveyor belt now brings finished items from production to the distribution part of the site, and there are robots which not only bring pallets into the warehouse but even shrink-wraps the finished products being loaded for distribution. “It has been a fantastic journey. In this coming year our focus will be to increase capacity even more while reducing time and cost to market.” added Nordholt.

“What sets us apart here is we have this team spirit; it encompasses the entire organisation” – Thomas Nordholt, Regional Supply Chain Director at Danya Foods

The growth will be a mixture of organic growth, adding new products to the line and may also include mergers and acquisitions if such opportunities surface. Nordholt said: “Last month we again broke our volume and cost production record for the 12th consecutive month and immediately I took the team out to celebrate. “There are always rewards and what is unique in my opinion is that we give high achievers an opportunity but also those hardworking people who may not come with a very

high end education or a very fancy looking resume in terms of their work experience.” This inclusiveness in encouraging the careers of all people no matter what background, education or background is a focal point of staff recruitment and retention. One prominent example includes one gentleman who started working at Danya as a receptionist one year ago; today he is in charge of all direct deliveries to all the main supermarkets in Saudi Arabia. “Simply by delivering results it immediately gets noticed at the top end of the organisation. It’s those people we are willing to invest in hard and fast. We give them opportunities

to succeed and we value their ideas and contributions.” commented Nordholt. He explained: “What sets us apart here is we have this team spirit; it encompasses the entire organisation and that means if a labourer from the warehouse really believes he has a good idea or suggestion, he is not afraid to walk into the general manager’s office proposing his idea because he knows we will be very receptive.” There is a government programme called Saudization to employ at least 20% local people in companies such as Danya, and Danya has been quick to support the government on this. Increasing automation created a need for more highly-skilled employees with Nordholt recognising many Saudi’s have a high skillset in robot technology and programming, therefore naturally increasing demand for those people. Asked what sets Danya aside from competitors, Nordholt said: “Our agility in the supply chain is incomparable. Objectively we are fairly small compared to some of our competitors here but they are very heavy organisations whereas we are extremely good at getting everyone to buy into a project instantly and delivering the results in a short time.” A perfect illustration of this operational overhaul is the fact Danya now saves 97% of the total packaging material used for its industrial cheese whilst it can also fit 15% more volume on the reusable pallets; another pleasing milestone in the company’s long-term, progressive vision.

T

he Nuclear Industry Association is gearing up to meet major changes within the sector as the UK launches a rebuild programme to meet the requirements of the nation’s power generation supply. In this special Q&A from Keith Parker, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Association, he discusses what the association is all about and what role it will play in the challenges that lie ahead. Q: Tell us a little about the role and goals of the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA)? A: The Nuclear Industry Association is the trade

association and representative voice of Britain’s civil nuclear industry. It represents more than 270 companies including nuclear power station operators, those engaged in decommissioning, waste management, nuclear liabilities management and all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear equipment suppliers, engineering and construction firms, nuclear research organisations, and legal, financial and consultancy companies. We have two main roles: acting as the voice of the nuclear industry making the case for nuclear to a range of influential audiences

Keith has been Chief Executive since September 2003. Keith joined the Nuclear Industry Association in December 1995 from the DTI and in March 1997 became Head of Corporate Communications, accountable for the strategic direction of the Associations communications, public affairs, media relations and issue management programmes.

including Government, Parliament and the media; and supporting the commercial interests of our members at home and abroad.

Q: With all current power stations due to be shut down in the mid-2020s, what is industry doing to prepare for this? A: In the next 10 years or so all the UK’s current nuclear power stations will be at the end of their life. This will have a significant impact on power generation and is why the new build programme

is so important. The State Aid application for the first of these stations, Hinkley Point C, is currently before the EU Commission. We believe this will reach its conclusion by the autumn. The way will then be clear for the project to get fully underway following EDF’s Final Investment Decision. Two further new build consortia are key to the UK’s new build programme; Horizon who will develop reactors at Oldbury and Wylfa; and NuGen at Moorside. The nuclear new build programme will be a major engine for growth for the UK nuclear supply chain and the economy more generally. It will open up many opportunities for small and medium-sized companies (SME) in the nuclear supply chain. We’re looking for our larger member companies to help mentor these SMEs. There are also opportunities through Statistics decommissioning, with the Nuclear G Decommissioning Authority (NDA) also looking at how to pair small firms who want to work on upcoming projects around the country with industry professionals. The NDA has set itself the challenge of increasing its SME content from 11 percent to 20 percent and is making good progress already. Ensuring there are people with the right skills coming into the industry is imperative – not only to deal with decommissioning, but in addition we will need 25,000 people for the new build project at Hinkley Point C.

Nia The NIA has recently launched re:generation, a project to increase young people’s knowledge of the nuclear sector so they are aware of the breadth of opportunities available. Q: What is the scale of the challenge for the nuclear industry in regards to perception and meeting low carbon energy targets? A: Nuclear has a vital role to play in meeting the UK’s energy and climate change obligations. Around 20-25 percent of the energy used to power homes and businesses comes from nuclear power. Together with renewables and clean coal it can reduce UK carbon emissions as part of a diverse energy mix. The UK needs 60GW of new electricity generating capacity, and the infrastructure to run this, by 2025 – just under a quarter of this (16GW) will come from nuclear.

Q: How will technology help UK power stations become more effective? A: Most current plant technology is Gen I or Gen II. The reactors going through the GDA process for Oldbury and Wylfa are Gen III which make more use of passive and advanced safety features. The AP1000 reactors which NuGen want to use at the Moorside plant are Gen III+. The advantage of newer reactor designs is that they can make use of modern design construction techniques, allowing tasks traditionally w w w. n i a u k . o r g

to both industrial and employment benefits. Not only in the supply chain as I’ve already mentioned, but also through manufacturing and construction. Fosroc enjoys global recognition through local focus

The British Heritage construction materials organisation has always had a keen eye for capitalising on emerging markets and has subsequently become a leading solutions provider of choice on an international scale Written by: Matthew Staff and Produced by: James Pepper 231

Fosroc

F

osroc has made a name for itself over the past 60 years in bringing the most innovative and tailored constructive solutions to the architect, design and construction sectors, and continues to find differentiators through its dynamism and flexibility. The ability to act locally despite being an international player in the market is a facet that the company has worked hard on since being established in the UK initially, and since being bought by holding company, JMH Group in 2003 and the organisation’s relocation of its head office to Dubai, Fosroc’s global influence and entrepreneurial flair has taken on new dimensions once again. Chief Executive Officer, André Ladurelli explained: “In contrast to our competition, we don’t tie ourselves down to bulk chemicals

upstream and trying to find a home for one specific material. We’re free to recommend the best technology rather than being driven by one particular response.” Fosroc is now in a position to liaise and evaluate with its customers the most appropriate solution for what they’re trying to achieve, agnostic to the base chemicals behind it. “We just want to deliver what is best to the customer and that’s what sets us apart from some of our peers,” Ladurelli continued. “We provide expertise in the little corners of what our customers are trying to do, providing peer-topeer basis solutions for engineering problems to ultimately find a number of ways to create value for different partners throughout the chain.” Locals run the show A key aspect of Fosroc’s customer-focused strategy has revolved around international saturation and subsequent proximity to its clients, both current and prospective. This is summed up the company’s ethos, ‘the locals run the show’, ensuring that varying climatic conditions and regional trends are prepared and accounted for. “A lot of the success in the industry is about proximity to the customer and we’re very entrepreneurial in that respect,” Ladurelli said. “Different conditions call for different cements, aggregates and climatic considerations because it varies the way that

different materials are going to perform. “Our expertise is in delivering consistency of performance in these different circumstances.” Manufacturing locally is core to the success of this ethos and has seen Fosroc expand over the years through the Middle East, into Asia and further into emerging markets, culminating in its headquarters in Dubai. Overall, Fosroc now has a presence across 20 countries with the Middle East and India proving especially fruitful at present where the quality and technologies behind the company’s products have been very well received.

Featured project: Wynn Palace Fosroc’s US$2.5 billion Wynn Palace Project on the Cotai Strip in Macau will comprise a luxury 2,000-room hotel and a mixed-use area used for gaming, dining, retail, convention facilities, a nightclub, and specialist attractions across 210,000 square metres of construction. The key to the complex’s success will be the use of Fosroc’s complete basement solution, Proofex Engage, which will include the joints, pile cap and pile head waterproofing. The client will subsequently benefit not only from the quality of installation synonymous with Fosroc, but by the versatility of the product which will lend itself to fast and easy application throughout the construction process.

The company already has a keen eye on potential areas of further expansion though as Ladurelli explained: “We’ve got an active pipeline of new territories so we opened new operating companies last year in Vietnam and in Iraq. I was also in Myanmar recently where we’re looking to become the first British firm and the first construction chemicals company to manufacture there. “Beyond that we’re looking very seriously around Central Asia, the Caspian region and Sub-Saharan Africa as the next ports of call. “We act both locally and globally, in a joined up way, because contractors are operating the same way and that’s what our customers expect from us.”

High profile projects Excelling in its work around the lifecycle of concrete, environmental considerations, the characteristics of its products and the technological complexities of fusing engineering and chemistry has subsequently led to Fosroc receiving numerous large scale projects in recent years. This has included beating numerous international competitors to the high profile job of delivering strong concrete to the Worli high rise tower project, being built by Samsung in Mumbai. Comprising both residential and commercial entities, a specific set of performance characteristics were required, and as Fosroc has proved time and time again, it is these niche specifications which the company thrives on.
