Welcome to the 2024 Spring Parade of Homes!
It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I extend to you a warm welcome to the 2024 Spring Parade of Homes! As the President of the Home Builders Association of Columbia, I am honored to have the opportunity to showcase the remarkable talent and craftsmanship of our local home builders.
Our community is fortunate to have an abundance of skilled contractors who pour their hearts and souls into each and every project. The homes on display during this parade are a testament to their dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to excellence. In addition to our home builders, I would be remiss not to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of our local vendors and suppliers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help these homes come to life.
I would also like to give special thanks to our Parade of Homes committee, which is made up entirely of volunteers, and our Executive Officer, Jami Clevenger. Without their time, effort, and a tremendous amount of planning, this event could not happen.
To enhance your parade experience, I encourage you to download our mobile app where you can explore detailed information, view photos, vote for your favorite homes, and customize a personalized parade route. We invite you to visit our website to download the app and learn more.
On behalf of the HBA of Columbia, I’d like to thank you for supporting our local home builders by participating in this event. Enjoy the parade!

Low-Cost Energy Saving Solutions for Your Home
Energy Saving
BY JAMI CLEVENGER Executive Officer, Home Builders Association of Columbia (HBAC)With prices going up on goods and services across the board, you might be looking for ways to lower your household expenses. Now is a great time to think about making some home improvements so you can save money on your utility bills throughout the year. With approximately 13% of greenhouse gas emissions coming directly from buildings due to heating, cooling, and cooking needs, here are a few ways to both save money on energy and reduce your carbon footprint this year.
• Get a Free Home Energy Assessment. An energy audit completed by a professional is a great first step to help benchmark where your home stands in terms of energy efficiency, and will give you a better sense of what actions you can take to help improve your home’s energy performance.
• Weatherize Your Home. You can do this by sealing any noticeable cracks, particularly around leaky doors and windows. Caulking these areas and weatherstripping can help air-seal troublesome spots in your house. For low- or moderate-income customers, you also might be eligible for the Weatherization Assistance Program to help offset costs.
• Add Insulation. After you take steps to air-seal your home, adding insulation to your attic, basement, and walls can go a long way for saving money on electricity – the insulation helps keep the heat inside your house, also making your home more comfortable.
• Make Window Improvements. Even if you don’t have the upfront cash to upgrade your windows at the moment, less expensive options include caulking, weatherstripping, and adding thicker window coverings to keep you warm during the winter.
• Reduce Phantom Loads. Phantom loads include electricity being used by appliances or devices purely because they are plugged into the walls, even if the device is on standby mode or off. Consider getting a programmable smart power strip, or simply unplug your devices whenever they are not in use.
• Check Your Water Heater Settings. Chances are you haven’t touched your water heater in years. Try lowering the temperature to reduce your energy use.
• Take Advantage of Your Blinds. To best take advantage of the sun, let the natural light in during the day to help heat your house, but close your curtains at night to help lock the heat in.
• Close Your Vents and Doors. For rooms you don’t use often, consider closing those vents and doors to help eliminate energy waste.
More Buyers Seek Outdoor Features in New Homes
As the home building industry celebrates New Homes Month in April, recent research shows that the pandemic had long-term effects on buyers’ expectations for their homes. One of the most lasting consequences is the desire to spend more time outside in the comfort and safety of porches and backyards.
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) asked recent and prospective home buyers about the top features they want in a new home. More than 50% of buyers ranked nearly a dozen outdoor features as essential or desirable in a home. Among the most popular outdoor features are a patio, exterior lighting, a front porch, landscaping, and a deck. The survey also found that between 2020 and 2023, outdoor fireplaces and outdoor kitchens increased in popularity.
Surprisingly, the desired features varied across generations. Boomers are significantly less likely than younger generations to want outdoor features in their homes. Less than half (49%) of Boomers considered an outdoor fireplace essential or desirable, compared to a majority (70%) of Gen Z and Millennial buyers. A similar dichotomy exists for an outdoor kitchen; only 45% of Boomers want an outdoor kitchen compared to most younger generations.
Functional outdoor spaces are one of the many advantages of a newly constructed home. Builders in our community closely follow buyers’ exterior needs and wants, so spring home buying season is a perfect time to find a home that fits modern lifestyles.
There are many other benefits of owning a new home that may be less obvious but just as valuable. For example, builders generally construct homes in new neighborhoods, and when families move into a new community simultaneously, lasting bonds of friendship and neighborliness often form immediately. Many home builders host community block parties to help neighbors meet and connect.
Entertaining new neighbors, friends, or family outdoors or indoors is easier with newer homes. Older homes often have smaller rooms, and therefore can be challenging to host gatherings with friends and family. Today’s home builders are creating more open spaces with higher ceilings, oversized windows, and expansive great rooms for added convenience and modern living.
To learn more about the benefits of new homes, contact us at www.columbiahba.com.
Is Remodeling Right for You?
America’s housing stock is steadily aging. According to a National Association of Home Builders analysis of America Community Survey estimates, the median age of owner-occupied homes is 40. The data shows that many homeowners across the country now reside in dwellings that are not new or modern. The analysis revealed that a majority (60%) of owner-occupied homes in the U.S. were built before 1980.
If your home is among the many due for an update, consider a remodel. Regardless of scale, any improvement project can elevate your home’s
livability and comfort, potentially enhancing its value. According to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value 2023 report, upgrades such as a garage door replacement, an HVAC conversion, and manufactured stone veneer provide a great return on investment and add to the sale price of the home.
Investing in a professional remodeler safeguards your valuable time and resources while ensuring the highest quality standards. Our community’s remodelers possess extensive experience, unwavering integrity, and the expertise to navigate any design
challenges that may arise throughout your project.
Home remodeling inherently involves overcoming challenges, such as maximizing existing space, strategically constructing additions, and navigating budgetary constraints. Professional remodelers can assist homeowners in effectively managing these issues and achieving their desired outcomes while adhering to their budget.
To find a professional remodeler or other contractor professional in our community, submit a request on our website at www.columbiahba.com.
