PUBLISHER'S NOTE
F
Saying goodbye Five years ago, I had no idea that this special person would make such a positive impact on my life, and I definitely could not anticipate the impact that she would make on Jefferson City. Of course, I am referring to Rebecca Rademan, associate publisher and editor of City Magazine. Rebecca has been the backbone of City Magazine and my right hand since 2009. She began her career with City as an advertising designer, where she met with customers, learned their businesses and designed ads to brand and promote their messages. You would see her in the crowd at all of the Jefferson City events, smiling and asking for names as she snapped photographs. She always left you feeling happy and appreciated because that is how Rebecca lives her life. Rebecca does her work and lives her life with grace, happiness and appreciation for others at all times. This hometown girl became the face of City Magazine, and what a beautiful face it is! In 2009 she walked into my office excited about the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead, and she wanted to learn everything she could about City Magazine. This blondehaired blue-eyed young lady fresh out of Lincoln University wanted to conquer the world. I do not know about the world, but as far as I am concerned, Rebecca had the vision and work ethic to grow City Magazine from a small-town magazine to a 204-page publication that rivals larger city magazines anywhere. I am so going to miss this friend of mine who is leaving City Magazine and Jefferson City, yet she is leaving them both better than when she began. Rebecca, I love you for being so passionate about your work at City Magazine and using the magazine as a platform to highlight the wonderful people, places and businesses of Jefferson City. I love you for always being willing to go the extra mile to not only do the job but to also take the work to the next level. I love you for your compassion for all of the people whom you interviewed, photographed and wrote about in stories to bring Jefferson City alive. People trusted and relied on you to share their words, and you always followed through with such dignity and professionalism. Your eye for detail and your level of expertise make you stand above the rest. It has been truly my honor to witness you grow from a young graduate to the successful career woman you are today. I am proud to have shared this journey with you, and I will be proud to watch you move on to your next endeavor in life. You have touched so many lives in so many ways, but I guarantee there is no one who has benefited from knowing you more than me.

Discover the BLUE in YOU
B
y providing a convenient local campus, reasonable class sizes and one-on-one time with professors, Lincoln University afforded me opportunities that I may not have had if I had chosen elsewhere. I was able to serve as editor and photographer of our student newspaper, The Lincolnian; participate in a variety of academic clubs; and gain realworld experience, advice and feedback during active discussion with my instructors and classmates. In fact, many of my professors not only helped foster my interests in my academic career but also have continued to serve as mentors in my professional career. To me, that’s invaluable. When people ask where I attended college, I’m proud to tell them I’m a Blue Tiger alumna.”

From the moment he laid eyes on the property, Steve Laux had plans for the 1885 homestead where he and his wife, Stephanie, now reside with their four children. “My uncle bought this property in 1991, and I started caring for his herd of cattle and working the farm with him,” Steve says. “I joked with him on and off for years that he should let me redo the falling-down farmhouse.” Years later Steve took over care of the herd and general upkeep of the property. Somewhere in this process, his dreams for the historic home came to fruition. “Late one afternoon I was feeding the cows, and it started snowing,” Steve says. “I stepped into the house for shelter and then crawled up the pull-down attic to inspect the leaking roof. While sitting there among the rafters, it suddenly hit me that, ‘Wow’, this space would be cool for a boy’s room.’” Four and a half years later, after preserving the foundation and exterior, gutting the interior and mostly rebuilding the insides, the Laux family calls the structure home. “We went into this project with the intention of making this our weekend retreat,” Stephanie says. “Because we were expending so much of our time and resources on this house, we decided we needed to be here full time. Now every day is a retreat. “At first I was reluctant about moving in,” Stephanie continues, “but once we were able to pull down inside walls, it made the space more open, and it changed everything.”
“At first I was reluctant about moving in, but once we were able to pull down inside walls, it made the space more open, and it changed everything.” — Stephanie Laux
A WELCOMING YET NOT OVERLY FANCY ENTRANCE is one of Stephanie’s favorite features of her home. “I love the way the exposed brick gives a nice blend of modern mixed with an older feel,” she says.
THE BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED STAIRCASE opens to three floors. The attic floor was once only reachable by pull-down stairs.

I N T E R I O R D E S I G N E R R E G I N A G R E E N from Scruggs Lumber helped to create a design for the bathrooms and kitchen. She also assisted Stephanie with paint colors throughout. “Stephanie was a great client to work with because she had an idea of what she wanted,” Green says. “She brought me pictures, I gave her options, and we planned together to make it happen.” Details such as glass-stone mosaics, tumbled marble and heated floors in the master bath give the room natural aesthetics and provide comfort as well. An eat-in kitchen has granite countertops and a tumbled travertine backsplash with cracked glass tile throughout. Stephanie and Green were sure to select materials that were both attractive and durable. “I really appreciate that while our house is beautiful, Regina helped me pick materials that will withstand the abuse that can happen with four energetic children,” Stephanie says. With no looking back, the Lauxs are happily nestled into their historic home, which includes 145 herd of cattle; a friendly mule named “Skinner,” whom the children enjoy riding; five noisy roosters; a dog named “Chewy;” and several cats. “One thing led to another,” Steve says. “I love old homes, and my hope is that we might inspire someone else to preserve a historic structure instead of tearing it down. I consider our home an antique, something that should be treasured. We love this place.” JC
A ROOMY EAT-IN KITCHEN with an amply sized granite island is a favorite gathering place for family.

WHITE OUT
Sept. 19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, the only holiday on the calendar that encourages people to babble like buccaneers for the sheer anarchic fun of it. The holiday is the brainchild of John Baur and Mark Summers, two friends from Albany, Oregon, who now go by the pirate personas of Ol’ Chumbucket and Cap’n Slappy and have swashed their buckles from L.A. to Las Vegas at libraries, bookstores, schools and several seedy bars. Surprise your co-workers, and expand your pirate vocabulary by visiting their site, talklikeapirate.com/howto.html.
Approximately 300 people gathered in the 100 block of East High Street in downtown Jefferson City for the Piccadilly in White auction in late July. Guests clad in all white for the event raised more than $15,000 in funds for the beatification of downtown Jefferson City.

“Making a decision to talk to your target audience in a way that allows you to personalize the message is becoming an important part of the game.” • Always keep the big picture in view. Think about your market as a continuum. Work toward specific goals, and only spend marketing dollars where they make sense for what you are trying to accomplish. • Opt for a media mix. Online options are increasing and very practical, but keep in mind the age group of your audience. Not everyone can be reached through electronic media. • Customize the message. Consumers are looking for businesses, products and marketing vehicles that speak directly to them.

“The world is very noisy, and it is hard to get people’s attention. Every company needs to find a way to consistently stay in front of their customers so that they can influence purchasing decisions.”
“It used to be that all you had to do was put a full-page ad in the local paper, an ad on TV, some radio advertisements, and customers would pour in. It is not so easy anymore because there are so many other opportunities for people to receive information.”
• Recognizing data collection is crucial. Gathering information on customers and clients helps you understand who they are and what they like and don’t like. Knowing what your customers are looking for helps you target them more effectively. • Reach the right demographic. Whether through social media, YouTube, online and so on, choose the best fit for what you want to say and whom you want to say it to. • Be consistent. Whether you are trying to reach a group of people and confirm their beliefs or get them to consider using your services, you have to be consistent not only in what you say but also how often you say it.
A B O U T T H E C O M PA N Y : “High 5 is a communications company that helps businesses of all sizes make marketing decisions based upon research and data collection,” Heckman says. “High 5 works to understand what our clients have to offer, what they are trying to accomplish, and then we offer a strategy of how to support those goals with communication tactics and messages that resonate with customers they hope to reach.” 60 | September/October 2014
• Know your target market. It is important that the messages make sense, especially to all prospects. • Research well. Collect data through both primary and secondary research. Primary research includes surveys, focus groups and phone interviews. Secondary research can be obtained through Google and social media. Research will help you understand your clients and learn how they get their news and information. • Go where your customers are to engage them. Social media is the new word of mouth. Utilize modern technology in unique ways to start conversations such as posting pictures and graphics that engage your customers.

“Suddenly the eyes and the ears of your customers and clients are on that tiny device they carry in their pockets.”
“Dependent on target audience and goal, a balance of technology and tradition is a very important concept to keep in mind.”
• Consider today’s rapidly changing technology when making marketing decisions. Studies show that in 2013, people spent more time with digital media than any other media. • Enhance your digital presence. For instance, use mobile marketing to provide the customer with real-time sales and promotions. • Budget with today’s customer in mind. With retail and service businesses in particular, make sure to dedicate money to update online content such as addresses, phone numbers and hours of operation. It is much like checking the spelling of your business name in the Yellow Pages, except today it’s Yelp, yellowpages.com and so on.

“Have a clear idea of where you want to be next year and the years after. Your vision for your business must stay focused to keep you on track.”
• Maintain a competitive edge. With every marketing decision, ask yourself, “Is this the answer to my customer’s needs?” • Stay committed to your goals. Don’t forget that marketing encompasses every part of your business or product that comes in touch with your consumer. For instance, in structuring social media campaigns, keep a consistent commitment to ensure the content is on target and that photos tell a quality story. • Update your image to stay with the times. Stay current with industry developments, follow trends and invest in new technology. Cultivate exceptional customer service that reflects the culture of your business.

“Simply having a website used to be enough; now you have to feed that website and utilize other online and offline venues.”
• Define your target market. This may be based upon a variety of characteristics, such as age, gender, education level and/or income level, etc. By defining your target market, you are not saying that you won’t help other people, but you are focusing on the people and businesses that are best for your company. • Track your marketing. Analyzing your marketing is the first step to knowing if it is working or if changes should be made. Tracking options include Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, asking clients how they found you, revenue cycles in conjunction with specific marketing efforts, along with many more. • Learn to use social media as a marketing tool. When small businesses fail to use social media to their full potential, they often miss out on benefits or positive results. Consistency and having a good mix of content are often keys to a successful social media and email marketing campaign.

Although the official group name is Encouragement through Caring (ETC), many joke that Extra Tough Chicks should be the real name. After a look through this breast cancer support group’s history, both names are accurate representations of what has become a special sisterhood. ETC came together in the spring of 1989, when a handful of breast cancer survivors decided to start a support group. Rosie Verslues, the only surviving founding member, recalls her early experiences. “Jean Wankum, a former nurse and dear friend, called to ask if I would be a part of a cancer support group,” she says. “At first I was hesitant because the meetings were being held at St. Mary’s where I had my treatments, and it meant reliving those memories. At that point I was a threeyear survivor.” Verslues admits it took her a good six months of attending monthly meetings before the treatment memories didn’t overwhelm her, but soon she found a deeper meaning for going. “We are an upbeat bunch,” Verslues says. “The support I received from this group helped me to open up and talk about my experiences. Our stories help others in a lot of different ways. Women who have recently been diagnosed tell me they are encouraged that I have survived for so long.” Fortunately Verslues’ cancer was caught in the early stages in 1986, and though she had another lump removed in 1995, her fight to help others remains tireless through 25 years of countless volunteer hours and just being a friend. She was recognized as the 2013 Volunteer of the Year by the American Cancer Society and has received other awards for breast cancer awareness and volunteerism. “As I approach my 28th year as a survivor, I could not be more grateful,” Verslues says. “The morning of my surgery, I asked God to allow me to see my children graduate and get married and even allow me the chance to enjoy my grandchildren. He has blessed me by answering all of those prayers and more. I volunteer because I am very thankful, and I want to help others.”

“Years ago there was such a stigma about having breast cancer. Coming to our group helps us to be able to say the word ‘cancer,’ and whatever we are facing, we have support, and we can move beyond the circumstances.” — Sandy Sneller

PHILANTHROPY G I N A M A R T I N , A M E M B E R O F E T C since being diagnosed in 1994 with stage-three medullary carcinoma, ran the course from fear to hope to action by joining the group. “Initially I was scared to death,” Martin says. “I just prayed to God that he would allow me to live long enough to raise our three small children. It was hard to think of a way to tell them and help them understand. “Not only did I survive an aggressive form of breast cancer,” Martin continues, “but I was able to see my children grow up and so much more. Every day is a blessing. I hope I am an encouragement to other breast cancer patients.” In addition to personal battles with breast cancer, Martin has six family members who have been afflicted with cancer. Martin says she believes that through the grace of God and through the support she both gives and receives, she has been able to keep her illness at bay. Martin has volunteered her time with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life since it began in Jefferson City in 1996. Her roles have been numerous, including event chair, event co-chair, committee chairperson, committee member, team captain and team member. She is also a Reach to Recovery volunteer, visiting newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, offering them reference information from the ACS and giving personal support and friendship. Sandy Sneller, survivor since 1996 and also an ETC member, says she appreciates that certain taboos about breast cancer are shifting.
“Our group is very uplifting,” Sneller says. “It is a place where we can tell stupid stuff about ourselves and our condition. When we forget something, we blame it on ‘chemo brain,’ and everyone in the group laughs and understands. Years ago there was such a stigma about having breast cancer. Coming to our group helps us to be able to say the word ‘cancer,’ and whatever we are facing, we have support, and we can move beyond the circumstances. “I was diagnosed with stage-two breast cancer that was also connected to my chest wall,” Sneller continues. “It spread to ovarian cancer, which lead to a complete hysterectomy shortly after the first surgery. I had a progressive type like my dad and was scared it would not go into remission.” Although the women involved with ETC are encouraging to one another, they are also there to help members through tragedy. “Of course we have a lot of casualties in our group,” Sneller says. “Some women do not survive long, and we try to be supportive of surviving spouses and families by bringing a meal or just staying in touch. Sometimes we have husbands who leave their wives, and this is especially devastating. We are here to support each other through it all. Hope is the word you never quit saying.” Sneller has served on the ACS board and been involved with fundraising events including Relay for Life and the Boost BBQ committee. JC
ETC meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Goldschmidt Cancer Center. Carol England, oncology nurse with Goldschmidt, attends the meetings and is available to answer questions and offer support to breast cancer survivors and their families. Members also reach out to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients by making home visits, where they deliver hope and baskets filled with favors and helpful information. To learn more about ETC, call 573-635-4839.
Rosie Verslues, a founding member of ETC, celebrates 29 years as a survivor.

Gaspare Calvaruso President of Capital Region Medical Center CURRENT JOB TITLE AND NUMBER OF YEARS/MONTHS IN THAT POSITION: Beginning Sept. 1, 2014, I will serve as president of Capital Region Medical Center. FAMILY: My wife, Melissa, is native to the area. Together we have three sons: Vito, 12; Vinnie, 10; and Nic, 7. EDUCATION: Bachelor of Arts in history and a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. I earned my MBA from William Woods University. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: I currently serve as a board member for Lindenwood University. Previously, I served on the St. Charles Chamber Board, Partners for Progress Board, St. Charles Community College Foundation Board, Crisis Nursery Advisory Board, St. Charles Ambulance District Advisory Board, Commerce Bank Advisory Board, St. Charles Volunteers in Medicine Board and the Senior Elizabeth Ann Seton Men’s Club. I am excited for the opportunity to get involved and become a part of the Jefferson City community.
“We have the opportunity to make a profound impact at a very vulnerable point in the lives of patients and their loved ones. It is a tremendous responsibility.”
WHY I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT MY JOB: The patients and families we care for make my job. Everyone who works in health care influences the patient experience. It is not always direct, but everyone plays a role in patient care. We have the opportunity to make a profound impact at a very vulnerable point in the lives of patients and their loved ones. It is a tremendous responsibility.
SOMETHING THAT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE: My previous time in Jefferson City, from 1995 to 1997, was very life changing for me in that I met my wife. We knew our familiarity with the community and our family relationships would eventually lead to our return to mid-Missouri. 70 | September/October 2014

P. Y. S . K . BIGGEST CAREER OBSTACLE I HAVE OVERCOME: My undergraduate degree in history and education did not provide me much knowledge in the realm of clinical procedures and health care policies. I had to learn many things on the job. Through extensive questions, observations and firsthand experiences, I eventually gained the knowledge to succeed. FAVORITE JEFFERSON CITY CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION AND WHY: The Capital Region Medical Foundation because it directly supports the hospital mission of improving health and promoting wellness to the people and communities it serves. As I settle into the community, I am eager to learn more about charitable organizations that make an impact at the local level. ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT MAKES ME MOST PROUD: Aside from my three sons, I am very proud of my St. Charles team’s accomplishments in my previous position. We revitalized the campus, improved the financial status of the organization, positively impacted patient satisfaction and increased employee morale and retention. FAVORITE PLACE TO SPEND A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Spending time at our house at the Lake of the Ozarks. LAST BOOK READ: Lonely Planet: Western USA. This was my research project before our family embarked on an RV excursion from midMissouri to Yellowstone National Forest, Mount Rushmore and Rocky Mountain National Park. FAVORITE TV SHOW: It’s a toss-up from opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum: either The Simpsons or Forensic Files. FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD: A fresh loaf of Italian bread and a block of cheese with Italian salami. FAVORITE APP: Pandora DREAM VACATION: I’d like to revisit Positano, a little town on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy. My wife and I honeymooned there 13 years ago. I would love a return trip when our children are older. SECRET ASPIRATION: I would love to have a cameo or be cast as an extra in a Hollywood movie or be a game show contestant on Jeopardy! SOURCE OF INSPIRATION: My mom and dad. My father emigrated from Sicily in 1960, and he and my mother worked hard and built a great life together. They taught my sister and me the importance of integrity, honesty and hard work. 72 | September/October 2014

GO BIG, or Go Home A devoted kindergarten teacher brings zeal to the lives of others.

Emily Roberts is proof that passion, coupled with good old-fashioned hard work, can blaze the way for many new opportunities. Although some might fear taking on too much, Roberts takes the opposite approach. Go big, or go home. This passion has fueled her to reach some of her biggest dreams, including becoming a
teacher in the Jefferson City Public School District. “I’ve never wanted to be anything else but a teacher, and my end goal was always to teach
in Jefferson City,” Roberts says. “I love my hometown and this school district. I want my child to have a quality education just like I had.”

Roberts, a kindergarten teacher at Belair Elementary, is also a major force behind the school’s implementation of Positive Behavior Support, a program aimed at reducing behavior problems through schoolwide positive reinforcement. When no funds were available for the necessary program rewards, Roberts rolled up her sleeves and planned a 5K fundraiser, which is now an annual event, netting $2,000
each year. Although she is proud of the effort, she is quick to credit her team for making it happen. “I could not do what I do every day without my co-workers; they are my support system,” she says. “I also have an amazing boss who trusts that he has the best teachers and gives us what we need to succeed in order to create the best classrooms and school.”
Roberts acknowledges that her drive and passion for new opportunities are fueled by a strong support system. She credits her parents, Don and Katie Whitener; her husband, Mark and her closest friends with lending a hand in all that she does including owning and operating an event-planning business. “I started planning my own wedding when I was 8 years old and during college offered to help plan parties or weddings for friends,” Jefferson City Magazine | 77

W
CITY CHARACTER Roberts says. “My brain is in party-planning mode at all times, so I created another outlet to do what I love.” Roberts started the business with her dad in 2008, aptly named Dad and Daughter Events, and has been helping clients with weddings, children’s birthday parties, anniversary events and surprise parties ever since. Recently, she added fundraising to her resume as the event coordinator for the annual HALO Foundation Art Auction. Roberts helped coordinate its art auction this past March. “My passion for teaching children is the same passion HALO has for helping orphans, and it will bring you to tears to see how they embrace helping these kids,” Roberts says. “You don’t realize how generous and giving our community is until you attend a fundraiser like this.” I N A D D I T I O N T O F U L L - T I M E T E A C H I N G and event planning, not to mention a husband and 4-year-old daughter, Roberts pursues her passion for music. She is the children’s music director at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City and also sings with the church’s contemporary praise band. It’s an honor she doesn’t take lightly.
78 | September/October 2014
“It is more than just an outlet to sing,” she says. “You’re saying what the congregation is seeking and, at the same time, growing closer to God through this worship experience.” Church is a family place for Roberts, one of her childhood favorites, and now a place where she raises her own daughter. Three generations of Roberts, including her mother and daughter, share their musical talents by singing in choir within the same walls. In addition to singing with family, Roberts also cherishes weekly dinners with her parents and her 95-year-old grandmother, Alline. “The reason I do all of the things that I do is because of the lessons I’ve learned from great people around me: family, church family, coworkers, my friends,” Roberts says. “I am lucky because I know there are people that don’t have that great support system, which is why I try so hard to be that for my kids.” “My kids,” she says. It’s not an error on Roberts’ part either. It’s how she feels about all the kids she is blessed to know and teach. “I treat my kids like they are my own,” she says. “I don’t see them as a test score or just how I can push them, but I see them as individuals who want to be loved and feel special. Isn’t that what we all want?” JC

BOOK REVIEW
Unguarded Moments
G CAPTIVATIN
READ
A brief look at Unguarded Moments: Stories of Working Inside the Missouri State Penitentiary by Larry E. Neal and Anita Neal Harrison
I
In this first memoir about life in the Missouri State Penitentiary by a worker who was neither a prisoner nor a guard, Larry E. Neal reveals a portrait of prison life much different from common conceptions. As a maintenance worker, Neal led prisoner work crews, and his stories show that life inside the prison walls could be surprisingly lighthearted. He describes prisoners and staff playing pranks on one another and crawling through dark tunnels together. In addition to a rare insider’s view into prison humor, Unguarded Moments gives readers a window into the rhythms of daily life inside the prison and also the shared humanity of all who live and work behind its walls. It was a match made at the National Block and Bridle Club. Jim and Cyndi Puyear, owners of Rocking P Ranch near Jamestown, Missouri, came together out of a love for each other and a shared passion for conscientious cattle farming. While growing up in Illinois, Jim, along with his father and brothers, raised Simmental cattle, a breed known for its tender and tasty meat and docile nature. Cyndi, who is a seventh-generation farmer and one of four siblings, grew up on a grain and livestock farm, also in Illinois. “Cyndi and I first met in the early ’80s at a National Block and Bridle Club meeting while she was still in college,” Jim says. “We became good friends, dated and then married. We have always shared enthusiasm for the humane treatment of livestock animals and responsible farming in all aspects. This is how we were raised.” After graduating from Illinois State University with a degree in agricultural sciences, Jim spent years as a livestock nutritionist, during which time he carefully researched and studied the latest standard methods of livestock management. With his in-depth background and work experience, Jim felt a strong urge to get back into farming. His goal was to incorporate modern techniques with the timeless methods he learned as a young man.

Jim rented an Illinois farm in 1991, purchased three heifers and reactivated his membership in the American Simmental Association. Never short on energy, he then became the county environmental health inspector and a certified food handler. Six years later, he rented a larger plot of land and convinced Cyndi to join him with the running of the farm. In 2002, Jim and Cyndi relocated Rocking P Ranch to land they purchased in Moniteau County, Missouri. Today they raise 30 head of Simmental cattle with a coup of Rhode Island Red chickens. They also grow a variety of carefully selected heirloom vegetables. Both livestock and produce are harvested for local restaurants and individual consumers. Besides running the farm with Jim, Cyndi works as managing farm director with Brownfield Ag News, the largest agricultural radio network in the nation. She received her degree from Western Illinois University in agricultural education and animal science. “Cyndi and I come from strong agricultural backgrounds and realize it could be easier and cheaper to use certain tools; however, our methods of farming fill a need for health-conscious

All Things French Kas A Designs rolls out a new jewelry line influenced by the owner’s travels. BY LAUREN SABLE FREIMAN PHOTOS BY TRAVIS DUNCAN
W
With a French grandmother and a family lineage based in France, it’s no wonder that Kas Jacquot, owner of Kas A Designs, has always been drawn to French design. Now a new jewelry line, Joie De Vivre, celebrates the sights and influences of French architecture and art. “Everything is beautiful in France,” Jacquot says. “”The food is beautiful, the people are beautiful, the architecture is beautiful and the language is beautiful.” Although she traveled to France twice before, it was a two-week trip three years ago that set her creativity awhirl. Starting in Paris, Jacquot took a 1,500-mile journey along the Rhone River to the French Riviera, then over to Provence and back. While soaking in the scenery, she snapped photographs of the intricate ornamental ironwork and architectural embellishments that pleased her artistic eye. Additional travels took her to Portugal and the Balkans, where she also looked for inspiration, but there wasn’t a place on earth that inspired her quite like France. “I’ve been in France before and have always been intrigued by the architecture,” Jacquot says. “The ornamental ironwork is made like jewelry and is beautiful. I thought it would be a good stimulus for a new line of jewelry.” Jefferson City Magazine | 133
W
When Jacquot returned from her trip to her home in the country, the international award-winning designer and gemologist closed herself off from the outside world for a week while she sketched her newest jewelry line. Her collection currently includes eight pendants loosely based on architecture that Jacquot photographed throughout France. With names such as Provencal Balcony, Provencal Ceiling and Napoleon’s Boudoir, the pieces are reminiscent of beautiful and intricate architecture that Jacquot admired on doors and balconies around the country and in the world-renowned Louvre. Each piece is adorned with a mix of diamonds, pearls and colored gemstones, 134 | September/October 2014
which are Jacquot’s true passions. Some pieces are made of mixed metals such as white gold and rose gold, silver and gold and white gold and yellow gold. Much of the collection has interchangeable stones that can be switched in and out by the wearer. Now that the pendants are complete, Jacquot is at work on the rest of the line, which includes rings and earrings. Eventually the collection will likely include bracelets as well. In addition to challenges such as creating rings that are both beautiful and functional, the entire process of creating jewelry is painstakingly detail-oriented and time consuming.

Once Jacquot completes a jewelry sketch, which can take days, the hand-drawn sketch is turned into a 3-D drawing through a computer software program. “This can take some time because the design software is not always exactly accurate on making the curves just the way I want them, and we have to keep redoing it,” she says. The next step involves Jacquot and her team creating a wax mold that can be cast with metal, allowing them to reproduce the piece. “The intricacy of the piece dictates how long it takes to make the model,” Jacquot says. “Polishing every finished piece in all of the tiny little areas and setting stones can take a week or two for each piece.”

Fall Fishing Marvel Anglers head to the Lake of the Ozarks for the best catches of the year.
I
BY TOM LOEFFLER If there are hundreds of good golf holes, the Lake of the Ozarks has thousands of good fishing holes sprinkled along its 1,150 miles of shoreline. There are fishing holes that make you go, “Wow, what fun!” And, unfortunately, there are holes that make you go, “Wow, that one got away.” As we leave the steamy days of summer, we head into perhaps the best two fishing months at the Lake, September and October. “It’s some of the best fishing we have all year,” Jim Divincen says, “because the fish start feeding and getting ready for the winter. It’s just amazing.” Divincen is the administrator for the Lake of Ozarks Tri-County Lodging Association. Unofficially but equally as important, locals consider him an ambassador for the entire Lake area, from fishing to hunting to shopping and restaurants. “You will not find a more friendly and family-user lake than this one,” Divincen says, “especially at this time of year with the ideal weather.” An added bonus is that the local noisy aircraft carriers have been put away for the summer.

The Lake also serves as home to Marcus Sykora, who won the All-American — call it the NCAA football championship for fishing — this spring in Alabama. He collected $100,000. “It’s obviously the pinnacle of my fishing career so far,” Sykora says. “It was an amazing feeling; what an emotional high. There are a lot of hobbies out there that are all expenses. This is a hobby that has the potential for profit. It’s just an awesome thing. “I’ve seen some awesome sunrises [many on his home waters] that most people don’t see because I’m out there on the water,” he continues. “The sheer grace of our country and the beauty of our region, it’s just amazing.” Jefferson City Magazine | 143

I T ’ S A N A M A Z I N G L A K E . Sure, it has oodles of tournaments worth boodles of money, but just as important is the father-and-son fishing experience the Lake has to offer on a beautiful fall afternoon. “Absolutely,” Berhorst says. “Just to get out on the water with your kids on a great day to go fishing, the Lake of the Ozarks is the premier lake for that. Starting in late August and going through November, it’s just an awesome fishing lake for anybody…for the average fisherman to the professional fisherman to the beginner.” “I think,” Divincen says, “Dion Hibdon said it best: ‘When it comes to fish in the two- to three-pound range, Lake of the Ozarks is the No. 1 fishery in the country.’” You notice how many great fishermen have roots at the Lake? This is no accident. The great ones in all sports will be found hanging out at the great venues. And you can get in there right with them, no green fees required, with multiple chances on every hole. As many as you want. Experience fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks: Saturday afternoon, on the water, casting a few lines, with family or friends and enjoying 78 degrees of sunshine. Maybe there will not be a boat full of fish and cash at the end of the day, but there will certainly be a boat full of smiles and memories. E
THE LAST WORD Next Chapter While producing the last issue as associate publisher and editor, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by bittersweet emotions. Anyone who knows me well will notice how passionate I am about City Magazine and Jefferson City in general. That’s why I’m so proud and grateful to have had a hand in our fourth annual City’s Best issue before moving forward to new personal adventures and endeavors, outside of the magazine. Each issue of City Magazine requires an allhands-on-deck approach, but the City’s Best 2014 issue, in particular, is a huge collaboration of our tremendously talented staff of writers, photographers, designers, editors and sales reps. I’m going to miss my position at City Magazine and residing in Jefferson City, but what I’m really going to miss the most are the incredible people I’ve been fortunate to work and play alongside. I specifically want to thank my dear friend, coworker and our publisher, Tami Turner, as I couldn’t ask for a better mentor. I entered the workforce as a meek but hardworking intern with no community connections, and Tami took me under her wing and made it her personal mission to provide me with the tools, connections and environment to put me on the path to success — both professionally and personally. Never once did I hear, “You’re too young or not ready to do that,” “I don’t think that’s possible,” or, “Let’s wait and see.” Instead, her attitude was: “I hear you. Let’s have a glass of wine, and you explain to me your vision and how you seeing it play out in the future.” It is this fun and spirited attitude that has been crucial not only to my personal development but also to the magazine’s — which, in turn, I hope can help positively impact the future growth and development of Jefferson City. On behalf of the Jefferson City Magazine team and our entire staff, I’d like to congratulate the 2014 City’s Best winners and thank the numerous people and small businesses for their participation and support of this issue to make it a success. We hope you find it both a delightful and informative read that will remain a coffee ornament throughout the year as a fun resource guide to reputable people and businesses within our community. Please be sure join us for our fourth annual City’s Best celebration on Oct. 2 at Capitol Plaza, where you can mingle with this year’s winners while enjoying tasty food samplings from your favorite restaurants, live music by The Cherry Pistols (Best Band) and the chance to win a grand giveaway at the end of the evening! Rebecca Rademan has served as the associate publisher of Jefferson City Magazine since 2011 and editor since early 2013. She resided in Jefferson City for 29 years before moving to Springfield, Missouri. *Red Fedora, $42; Heavy Gold Cuff, $22, provided by Absolute Vintage, Downtown Columbia, MO.
