Kansanshi Mining PLC Zambia is a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals, a global copper company that produces copper in the form of concentrate cathode and anode which has inventories of nickel, gold, and cobalt. The company operates the Kansanshi mine, which is in Solwezi in the North-Western Province of Zambia. The mine is one of the largest copper reserves in Zambia, with estimated reserves of 727 million tonnes of ore graded at 0.86% copper. The mine also produces gold as a by-product.
The General Manager of Kansanshi Copper mine is Anthony Mukutuma, who was appointed in June 2020. He is the first Zambian
to hold this position at the largest copper mine in Africa by production. Mukutuma has a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering with Minerals Engineering from University of Birmingham and a Master of Business Administration from University of Liverpool. He has over 20 years of experience in the mining industry, having worked as a Plant Metallurgist at Konkola Copper Mines plc and as a Metallurgical Manager at First Quantum Minerals Limited.
Under Mukutuma’s leadership, Kansanshi has been exploring the use of modern technologies to improve its mining operations, such as microwave rock analysis (MRA) for online ore grade analysis and subsequent possible sorting to mitigate the impacts of mining a complex vein-type orebody with highly variating grades. The company has also invested in improved infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, schools, and health facilities, to benefit the local communities. Additionally, the company has been implementing procurement and supply chain management strategies to support local businesses and suppliers, as well as to reduce costs and environmental impacts.

With a commitment to sustainable mining practices, Kansanshi Copper Mine has achieved remarkable success in operating at optimal efficiency. The company’s activities encompass exploration, extraction, processing, and reclamation, all conducted with meticulous attention to environmental stewardship. Under Mukutuma’s leadership, Kansanshi
has embraced best practices to ensure responsible resource extraction and prioritise workforce safety. Rigorous safety protocols, training programs, and state-ofthe-art equipment are employed to ensure a safe working environment. This commitment has led to reduced accidents and incidents. They also have adopted efficient resource management practices. Its advanced processes, including modern waste management systems and water con-
servation measures, ensure that operations remain sustainable and safeguard the surrounding ecosystem. Through various initiatives, such as land reclamation and reforestation programs, the mine strives to rehabilitate the surrounding areas affected by mining activities. In addition, ongoing research and implementation of sustainable energy solutions aim to reduce the mine’s carbon footprint.
Infrastructure development has been a key focus under General Manager Anthony Mukutuma’s leadership. Kansanshi recognizes that robust infrastructure is vital for operational efficiency and growth. The company has modernised facilities, established efficient transportation networks, and created state-ofthe-art operational hubs. This infrastructure not only supports current operations but also facilitates future expansions and innovations.
One of the primary areas of infrastructure improvement is the development of roads and transportation networks. Kansanshi has
made significant investments in upgrading and maintaining road networks to facilitate the transportation of equipment, supplies, and products to and from the mine site. This includes collaborating with local authorities and government bodies to ensure the construction and maintenance of quality roads that provide reliable access to the mine. Power supply infrastructure is another critical aspect of Kansanshi infrastructure improvement efforts. The company has established partnerships and invested in power generation projects to ensure a reliable and sustainable power supply for its mining operations. This has involved developing and upgrading power transmission and distribution systems to meet the increasing energy demands of the mine. Water management infrastructure is also a priority for Kansanshi Mine. Water is a crucial
resource in mining operations, and the company has implemented measures to ensure efficient water usage and responsible discharge of wastewater. Kansanshi has invested in water treatment facilities and implemented strategies to minimise water consumption by optimising processes and implementing recycling and reuse mechanisms.
Anthony Mukutuma, as the General Manager, envisions an infrastructure that not only supports the current mining operations but also contributes to the longterm development and prosperity of the region. His vision includes collaborating with local communities, government entities, and other stakeholders to identify and address infrastructure gaps beyond the immediate needs of the mine.
Mukutuma’s vision extends beyond the mine gate, recognizing that improved infrastructure can unlock economic opportunities and social progress for the surrounding communities. By investing in infrastructure, Kansanshi aims to provide lasting benefits to the region by creating employment opportunities, improving access to essential services, and promoting economic diversification. To realise this vision, Kansanshi actively engages with local communities to understand their needs, concerns, and aspirations. Through open dialogue and partnerships, the company works towards mutually beneficial solutions that contribute to shared prosperity. This approach emphasises the importance of sustainable and inclusive development, ensuring that the benefits of infrastructure improvements extend beyond the mining activities.
The economic contributions of the Kansanshi Copper Mine extend far beyond the mining sector. The company plays a crucial role in job creation, providing employment opportunities for thousands of Zambians and supporting the livelihoods of their families. Additionally, the mine’s activities contribute significantly to the country’s GDP, generating substantial
foreign exchange earnings for Zambia. Its commitment to social responsibility, aims to make a positive impact on the communities in which it operates. The company invests heavily in education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Under its CSR initiatives, the mine has established schools, health centres, and even supported educational scholarships to help improve the quality of life for locals. These efforts foster socio-economic development and
empower communities to thrive beyond mining operations.
