Gelsinger is committed to making Intel a leader in all these aspects, while also supporting the broader semiconductor ecosystem in the US and around the world. He advocates for policies and investments that will strengthen the domestic semiconductor industry, such as the CHIPS for America Act, which provides incentives for chip manufacturing and research in the US. He also supports initiatives that will foster collaboration and trust among allies and partners in the semiconductor space.

Intel’s new chip factories will also create thousands of jobs for American workers, support local communities and businesses, and stimulate economic activity and development. Moreover, Intel’s initiative will help advance the U.S. leadership in semiconductor technology and innovation, which is vital for maintaining the U.S. edge in strategic domains such as defence, intelligence, health care, energy, and education.

INTEL’S SUSTAINED INNOVATION AND PARTNERSHIPS:

Increasing the production capacity of existing and new chip factories, especially for older and less advanced chips that are in high demand for various applications. For example, Intel will spend $20 billion on two new chip plants in Ohio, Taiwan Semiconductor will invest in several new chip-making factories in the US by 20244, and Samsung will announce plans for a $17 billion new factory.

The global semiconductor industry is highly competitive, with countries around the world vying for leadership. Intel’s commitment to U.S. innovation and manufacturing is not only about economic advantages but also about maintaining a strategic edge in critical technologies. Semiconductors have become a strategic asset, and the ability to design and manufacture them domestically is vital for national security and technological leadership. The current chip shortage is a global problem that affects different industries in several ways, such as the automotive, GPU, and game console industries. The shortage is caused by a combination of factors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, trade tensions, geopolitical risks, and technological gaps. To address the chip shortage, some of the actions that are being taken or planned are:

Diversifying the supply chain and reducing the reliance on foreign suppliers, especially for critical and strategic chips. For example, the US passed the CHIPS Act in 2022 to provide $50 billion in funding for domestic semiconductor research and manufacturing, and the EU is considering a similar initiative to boost its chip industry.

Innovating and developing modern technologies and solutions that can overcome the technological challenges and gaps in the semiconductor industry. For example, some chipmakers are exploring new materials, architectures, and designs that can improve the performance, efficiency, and scalability of chips.

This shortage is expected to last until 2024, depending on the recovery of the supply chain and demand of the market. Therefore, it is important for the affected industries to find ways to cope with the challenge and prepare for the future.

Adapting and optimising the product design and features to use available chips or alternative components. For example, some automakers have removed nonessential features or minimised product customization to cope with the chip shortage.

Pat Gelsinger’s leadership and his vision for Intel Corporation represents a continuation of the company’s rich history of innovation and commitment to U.S. manufacturing. Intel’s investments in semiconductor manufacturing facilities in the United States are a testament to the importance of domestic semiconductor production in maintaining technological leadership and national security. Intel’s role in the semiconductor industry remains pivotal, shaping the future of innovation and the global technology landscape. The company has helped create Silicon Valley and shape the history of computing. As the world enters a new era of data -centric computing driven technology inflections such as AI, 5G and the intelligent edge, intel is once again demonstrating its vision and ambition to lead the future of technology by investing $20 billion in building two new chips factories in Ohio. This is not only a bold move on American manufacturing but also a significant step towards fulfilling Intel’s mission: creating world changing technology that enriches the lives of every person on Earth.

er-centricity and sustainability. “When I looked at NewCold, I was blown away by the vision and ambition of its founder, Bram Hage, who had a clear idea of how to disrupt the cold storage industry with automation and data,” he says. “I also saw a great opportunity to leverage my experience in digital transformation and customer service to help NewCold grow and scale globally.” Today, NewCold operates 10 stateof-the-art facilities across Europe, Australia, and North America, serving customers in various sectors such as food manufacturing, retail, and foodservice. Under his leadership, NewCold has received many awards and recognition for its innovative and sustainable approach to the cold chain industry. In 2020, NewCold won the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses (IARW) Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) Innovation Award for its automated pallet handling system.

LEADERSHIP At the helm of this success story is Abhy Maharaj, who joined NewCold as its global chief commercial officer and chief operating officer in July 2019. Maharaj is responsible for driving the company’s growth strategy, customer relationships, operational excellence, and innovation across all markets. Maharaj brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise in various sectors, including aviation, dairy, and technology. He started his career as a manager of

investor relations at Air New Zealand, where he helped to communicate the airline’s strategy and performance to shareholders and analysts. SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS Another core pillar of NewCold’s strategy is sustainability, which Maharaj says is embedded in everything the company does. “Sustainability is not just a buzzword for us, it’s a responsibility and an opportunity,” he says. “We believe that by being sustainable, we can create positive impacts for our customers, our employees, our communities, and our planet.” One of the ways that NewCold demonstrates its commitment to sustainability is by reducing its environmental footprint through energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. The company designs its warehouses to minimise heat loss and maximise natural light, and uses advanced insulation materials and refrigeration systems that reduce energy consumption by up to 50% compared to conventional cold storage facilities. The company’s automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) are designed to minimise energy consumption and reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. NewCold is committed to reducing its environmental impact and has implemented several initiatives to achieve this goal. One of the ways they are doing this is through their facilities, which are designed to be energy-efficient and sustainable. For example, they use natural refrigerants, LED lighting, and advanced insulation systems to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, their automated systems and robotic technology help to minimise

waste and reduce the need for human labour.

tions that help reduce waste and improve efficiency.

Another way that NewCold is promoting sustainability is through their partnerships with like-minded companies. They collaborate closely with their customers to develop sustainable supply chain solutions, such as reducing transportation miles and using renewable energy sources. They also partner with technology providers to develop innovative solu-

NewCold also invests in solar panels and wind turbines to generate clean energy for its operations. For example, its warehouse in Wakefield, UK, has a rooftop solar farm that can produce up to 1.5 megawatts of electricity per year, enough to power 400 homes. The warehouse also has a wind turbine that can generate up to 2 megawatts of electricity.

KEY STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS NewCold’s success is in part due to its strong partnerships with companies across the supply chain. They collaborate closely with their customers to develop customised solutions that meet their unique needs. This includes everything from managing inventory to perfecting transport routes. They also partner with logistics providers to ensure that

78

goods are transported in the most efficient and sustainable way possible. They have set up strong relationships with some of the world’s leading f rozen food companies, such as McCain, Unilever, Froneri, Lamb Weston Meijer, and General Mills. These companies trust NewCold to store and distribute their products with the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

BUSINESS TIMES MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2023

Also partnering with other industry players to support its growth and innovation. For example, NewCold has a long-term partnership with Westport Capital Partners, a private real estate investment firm that supplies capital and strategic guidance to NewCold. NewCold also recently formed a joint venture with Global Metal Construction (GMC), a warehousing specialist based in China, to expand its presence in the Asian market.

FEATURE

In addition to partnerships with customers and logistics providers, NewCold also collaborates with technology companies. They are always looking for innovative solutions to improve their operations and better serve their customers. For example, they use automation and robotics to increase efficiency and reduce errors. They also use data analytics and artificial intelligence to optimise inventory management and transport routes.

79

FEATURE

TECHNOLOGY INNOVATIONS AND TRANSFORMATION One of the key differentiators of NewCold is its use of technology to optimise every aspect of its operations, from warehouse design and construction to inventory management and transport planning. The company uses warehouse management software (WMS) developed by Davanti Warehousing, which delivers a cloud-based solution that integrates seamlessly with NewCold’s automated systems and equipment. The WMS enables NewCold to achieve prominent levels of efficiency, accuracy, safety, and traceability in its warehouses, which are 80-90% automated and can store up to 200,000 pallets at temperatures as low as -23°C. The WMS also allows NewCold to supply real-time visibility and control to its cus-

tomers, who can access their inventory data anytime and anywhere via a web portal or mobile app. Maharaj says that technology is at the heart of NewCold’s value proposition and competitive advantage. “Technology is not just a tool for us, it’s a way of thinking and doing business,” he says. “We use technology to deliver solutions that meet our customers’ needs and expectations, as well as our own goals of operational excellence and innovation.” He adds that technology also enables NewCold to adapt quickly to changing market conditions and customer demands. “We are constantly looking for ways to improve our processes and systems, as well as to explore new opportunities and technologies that can add value to our customers and our business,” he says. “We have a culture of learning and exper-

imentation that allows us to evaluate new ideas and scale them up if they work.” The company uses telematics technology to track the location and temperature of its trucks in real-time, ensuring that products are transported at the right temperature and arrive at their destination on time. NewCold’s trucks are also equipped with the latest safety features, such as lane departure warnings and collision avoidance systems. Another way that NewCold is using technology to improve their operations is through data analytics and artificial intelligence. They collect data on everything from inventory levels to transport routes and use this data to optimise their operations. This allows them to make informed decisions about everything from inventory management to transport routes.

Souleymane Traore, CEO of Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee

EXPORTED ANNUALLY Guinea is a small West African country that holds the world’s largest reserves of bauxite, the raw material for aluminium production. Bauxite is a vital resource for the global economy, as aluminium is most used in various industries ranging from transportation and construction to packaging and electronics. However, for a long time, Guinea has been exporting its bauxite in its raw form, without adding much value to it locally. This has limited the benefits of the mining sector for the country’s development and diversification. This situation is changing under the leadership of Souleymane Traore, the CEO of Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinee (CBG), the largest bauxite producer and ex-

porter in Guinea. Traore, who took over the helm of CBG in 2017, has a vision to transform the company and the industry into a more sustainable, responsible, and profitable one. He has initiated several projects and initiatives to modernise CBG’s operations, improve its infrastructure, optimise its supply chain, and support local communities and the environment.

HOWEVER, FOR A LONG TIME, GUINEA HAS BEEN EXPORTING ITS BAUXITE IN ITS RAW FORM, WITHOUT ADDING MUCH VALUE TO IT LOCALLY. THIS HAS LIMITED THE BENEFITS OF THE MINING SECTOR

Under the astute leadership of CEO Souleymane Traore, CBG has not only revolutionised the landscape of mining operations but also upheld a commitment to technological transformation, improved infrastructure, responsible procurement, and efficient supply chain management. One of the key projects that Traore has spearheaded is the expansion of CBG’s production capacity from 15 million tons per year to 18.5 million tons per year. The project completed in 2021, involved upgrading CBG’s mining equipment, railway network, port facilities and processing plant. The expansion has increased CBG’s efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness in the global market, as well as its contribution to Guin-

ea’s revenue and employment. Another project that Traore has championed is the development of a local alumina refinery in partnership with the Guinean government and other stakeholders. Alumina is the intermediate product obtained from bauxite after refining it. It then smelted into aluminium metal. By building an alumina refinery in Guinea, CBG aims to add more value to its bauxite locally, create more jobs and skills, and reduce its dependence on foreign markets. The refinery project is currently in the feasibility stage and expected to have a capacity of 1.5 million tons per year.

Traore is also committed to making CBG a more responsible and sustainable company that respects the highest standards of health, safety, environmental and social performance. He has implemented several policies and programs to ensure that CBG operates in harmony with its stakeholders, especially the local communities affected by its activities. For instance, he has launched a community development fund that invests in various projects such as education, health, water, sanitation, and agriculture. He has also supported the creation and training of micro-enterprises that provide goods and services to CBG and other customers.

BUSINESS TIMES MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2023

Moreover, he has promoted the preservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services by initiating a reforestation campaign that aims to plant one million trees by 2025.

TRAORE IS ALSO COMMITTED TO MAKING CBG A MORE RESPONSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE COMPANY THAT RESPECTS THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF HEALTH, SAFETY, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL PERFORMANCE.

GALIANO GOLD GHANA:

NAVIGATING THE GOLDEN PATH OF LEADERSHIP, INNOVATION, AND SUSTAINABILITY Project by: Malvern Kandemwa Words by: Michelle Duncan

Ghana is one of the top gold-producing countries in Africa, with an estimated 142.4 tonnes of gold mined in 2019. Among the many mining companies operating in the country, Galiano Gold Ghana, formerly known as Asanko Gold Ghana, is a prominent gold mining company with a rich history of exploration and resource development. Founded on the principles of responsible mining practices, sustainable development, and community en-

gagement, Galiano Gold Ghana has emerged as a leading player in the global gold mining industry. This historical narrative sheds light on the company’s evolution, its strategic location, and its mining operations in the heart of Ghana’s gold-rich terrain. The roots of Galiano Gold Ghana can be traced back to the early 2000s when exploration efforts began in Ghana’s prolific Ashanti Belt. The company’s journey commenced with the discovery of the Esaase deposit in 2001, an event that would set the stage for its subsequent growth and development. Galiano Gold Ghana’s predecessor, Asanko Gold Inc acquired the Esaase deposit in

2013, marking a significant milestone in its history. The mine is one of the largest gold mines in Ghana, with proven and probable reserves of 4.8 million ounces. The ASW works by combining an inner steel hub with an outer steel drum, which are connected by twelve nitrogen-filled cylinders and six oil dampers that supply suspension. The outer drum can be fitted with bolt-on customised polyurethane or steel treads, which can be replaced without removing the wheel. The ASW is engineered to replicate the tire size, load-bearing ability (or more if desired) and deflection of the conventional tires. It is also designed to cope with up to 50% lateral side load, making it more stable and safer than rubber tires in sharp corners. These wheels, engineered to perfection under Kemeny’s leadership, have reshaped the mining landscape. Unlike traditional solid wheels, GACW’s air suspension wheels use advanced pneumatic technology, offering many advantages:
