ELPIE PARAS TURNED 60

June 1-2, 2012

P10.00

…and is now a Senior Citizen! Recent Socials of Various Personalities (R.S.V.P.) By Nena Neri Hernandez

A Surprise Party was prepared by his lovely wife ROSE and children at a local country club. I have always admired this brilliant young man. As we all know, he is responsible for our mo- dern cable system and other business enterprise that he and wife Rose gave and trained their children to handle. The family, meaning his brothers and sisters as well, are all hard working. We have to give the credit to the late father, Pabling and mother, Nanang. The beautiful landscaping at DAHILAYAN Adventure Park has Nanang’s touch. At her age, she is still active especially when it comes to plants. The foresight of Elpie is admirable. I have just visited Dahilayan Adventure Park and admired everything on it. The Zip Line where our group enjoyed but I never dared, is something that we should all be proud of. It is our top tourist attraction. The celebrant ELPIE by the way is a recipient of the GERRY ROXAS LEADERSHIP AWARD, and a DEL MONTE SCHOLAR. Now, about the surprise birthday party that was truly a surprise to Elpie, was a work of love by his wife ROSE, children, and his employees because the hall was decorated with a touch of art and was filled with enlarged photos

SURPRISE! The unsuspecting birthday celebrant walks into an ambush with son Alex and apo"Hs Tia and Pia singing "Happy Birthday".

of celebrant and of his achievements. This was the eldest daughter ROXANNE’s bright idea. She is an Interior designer. RINA, ALEX, ROSELLE, REBECCA, ANGELICA and ADRIAN worked as one, to make the party not just a success but a surprise to the celebrant. ROSE, quiet and shy and who always wants to be in the background surprised us all when she stood up to give her celebrant husband a tribute(Ah !What love can do!) She mentioned that Elpie almost lost his life twice! What a revelation! This means that God saved his life so he can pursue his dreams for Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon and Mindanao to allow us to benefit from his brilliant mind.

The happy celebrant lights up in delight at his birthday cake with wife Rose.

His Cable Industry Associates, Chamber of Commerce Group who performed for him, as well as the employees of PARASAT that gave a dance number meant that he is truly loved. Nanang’s message was to us an inspiration not only because she is still sharp at her age but remained humble in spite of the family success.

With his High School Batchmates from Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan Class '68.

Cable industry pioneers honor one of their peers (L-R): Joemar Lobregat and Tim Bautista of Cable Boss and Jecelyn Kho of HBO Asia who came all the way from Singapore to be with Elpie on his special day. Also in photo are the celebrant with daughter Rina and apo Lana. Rina is now GM of Parasat.

The delighted celebrant makes his speech. Claims it was totally unexpected.

The Oro Chamber officers and staff render a song number.

Surprised yes, but happily surprised!

The fulfilled celebrant with the love of his life Rose, their seven children, in-laws and all the grandchildren.

FIFTEEN students earned and learned office works at the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Unit-10 (DA RFU-10) after they rendered 22-day Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP). The students received their certificates of completion and checks as payment of their services on May 10, 2012 at the DA conference room. The program was implemented through the memorandum dated March 20, 2001 of the Office of the President and is in line with Department of Agriculture’s undertaking in supporting the National Council for Welfare of Disabled Persons. The students applied and went through screening procedures like written examination and series of interviews as required by the policy guidelines in implementing the PSYI program. They received 100% of the government’s minimum wage equivalent P 286 per day. It served as financial assistance for their tuition during enrollment. Moreover, the interns

were also given the chance to express their views and opinions about DA-10’s operation and identify issues that needs to be addressed and improved on. Jennifer Gono, one of the interns assigned at the Crops Division said that, “I learned a lot of things that developed and motivated me to have a better future.” Her internship exposed her to the field of agriculture and enabled her to learn natural farming, organic composting and organic agriculture. Fu r t h e r m ore , s h e stressed that, “the best thing that this job has taught me is that working in the Department of Agriculture is not just a profession, but it’s a passion because you work not just to earn money or for promotion but to accomplish the assigned task and serve other people”. In her message, DA-10 Regional Executive Director Lealyn A. Ramos said that the interns are the “lucky ones”, having been chosen as beneficiaries of the program among more than 40 applicants who vied for it. She hoped that the compensation that

the interns received will serve its purpose and that they will become successful with their education and will lead them to be good citizens. She also commended the interns who received recognition for being punctual and advised them to keep and practice the good virtues as they go on with their endeavors. Moreover, she agreed that passion for work is important so that one will be inspired to do more. She also told the interns that, “if you love your work, then it’s no longer work, its fun”. The students who benefited from PSYI program are Julymer Agad, Kenneth Asuncion, Jessica Barimbao, Chrismar Bolotano, Christy Daguimol, Jennifer Gono, Angelo Lagapa, Sheila Marie Llido, Neil Diamond Naga and Dominic Valdez. Meanwhile, Trevi Lorenz Espinosa, Ma. Lysandra Arabejo, Kheer Solamin, Mark Anthony Tamayo and Karl Villavecencio were also recognized for being punctual during their internship period. # (VANESSA MAE S. SIANO, DA-RAFID 10)

Balancing act Think a minute. You remember the first time you tried to ride a bike? It can be quite tricky. The bike shakes and wobbles everywhere until you finally learn how to balance your weight. Balance is important in everything. So eating only fattening snack food every day is not a balanced diet. Being active in sports and exercise is good for us, but we can even overdo that too, if we don’t balance it with work, rest, and other activities. In raising our children, we parents must be fair in the things we expect from our kids. Our children need balance in their life. So if you and I expect our kids every

Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst day just to study and work, then we’re not giving them a healthy, happy childhood. Our kids also need to play and just be kids. We know that the stress and pressures of school work and adult life will hit them soon enough. If you work too much, you may be admired and respected by some people for being strong, successful and hardworking. But are you successful in your

marriage and family? Is your wife or husband and children happy while with you’re gone from them working so many hours everyday? And even when you are home, are you usually tired, cranky and hard to live with? Our Creator made our bodies, minds and feelings so that we live and work best only when our life is balanced.

Consequently, any time we do too much of one thing and too little of another, we get out of balance and in trouble. Our marriage ends in divorce. Our children are not close to us. Our bodies get sick, tired and worn out. Today, if you realize that your life is out of balance, you can ask Jesus Christ to forgive you for living your own wrong way, and God the Son will show you all the things you need to do differently to change. It’s only with Jesus’ wisdom and help in your life every day, you can finally start enjoying a balanced, happy life. Just Think a Minute.

What’s in store for us after the impeachment? A LOT of political observers and analysts were practically caught flat-footed with the outcome of the impeachment trial of illfated Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato C. Corona. The 20 – 3 voting in favor of conviction surprised even the prosecution team of the House of Representatives. Some say, at most they expected a 17 - 6 or a very close 16 – 7 vote. This writer earlier wrote that an acquittal was possible because at least 8 senators have reasons, legal or personal , on the impeachment issue. Aside from Senators Joker Arroyo, Mirriam Defensor-Santiago and Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., we also expected Manuel Villar, Gregorio Honasan, Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., Lito Lapid and Jinggoy Estrada or Pia Cayetano to also go for acquittal. Revilla as president of Lakas Kampi and Lapid were expected to support

Double Barrel Vic A. Endriga the acquittal of Corona as all three of them were known loyal supporters of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Villar was likewise not expected to vote for conviction because he himself was a victim of a vicious black propaganda unleashed by supporters of now President Benigno Aquino, III. Even Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile was perceived by many as a sympathizer of Corona. So what gives? The result was attributed to, at least, four major factors. One, the visit of President Aquino to Iglesia ni Cristo head minister Edu-

ardo Manalo a week before judgment day. Two, the aborted walkout of Corona that earned the ire of most senators, Enrile included. Three, the Sunday dinner meeting at the Dasmarinas Village, Makati residence of Sen. Loren Legarda with Enrile, Villar, Revilla, Honasan, Estrada and Sotto was also seen as the deciding factor. This so called expanded Enrile bloc is now known as the swing vote that tilted the balance against Corona. Had this bloc supported Corona, then it could have been a 10 – 13 voting in favor of acquittal as Corona actually needed only 8 votes. Fourth,

the blunder of Corona’s defense team of presenting as hostile witness Ombudsman Carpio-Morales and the admission on the existence of four dollar and three peso bank accounts. The turn of events actually teaches us on the reality that our political system is still far from being mature or stable as in the end maneuverings and possibly horse trading undertaken by the administration prevailed. Let’s take notice of the fact that Corona’s impeachment was instigated by no less than President Aquino and zealously supported by majority of the House of Representatives. Now this leaves us with two more important questions. First, will Corona’s conviction finally enable the Aquino administration to gain headway on its campaign against graft and corruption by STORE/PAGE 7

Seeking first God’s kingdom BUT SEEK ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” --Matthew 6:33. What is this kingdom we are required in our text to seek? To seek it, implies that we seek to belong to it--seek to know Christ’s will and to do it--seek to be recognized by Christ as one of his subjects, and seek to promote the interests of this kingdom. We are required, not only to seek the kingdom of God, but also “his righteousness.” The command to seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness first, enjoins upon us to treat this subject as of absolute and supreme importance. This

The New Generation Alex A. Podador must be the great business of our lives. Nothing else is allowed to have any practical importance compared with this. It is also implied that we seek this kingdom with supreme earnestness. This is fully involved in the points just spoken of. It is also implied that we seek the kingdom of God with perseverance. We must press on till we obtain.

To this command Christ has annexed a promise. This next claims our attention. You will observe that the condition of this promise is, “Seek first the kingdom of God;”--as if he had said “If you will seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, you shall have all these earthly things of which he had been speaking. You shall be fed as surely as I feed the ravens, and

clothed as well as I clothe the lilies. You need not be anxious for these things. It is my business to provide them. We are to understand this promise as including all that is necessary for us. The supreme importance of the subject would render Christ’s command in the text more reasonable even without the annexed promise. For even if we were to suffer the want of bread and of poverty, this were infinitely better than to lose the kingdom of God and his righteousness. Therefore, it must be wise to seek the kingdom of God first. T h e c om m an d an d promise in our text strongly KINGDOM/PAGE 7

‘Shine Baliangao’ highlights protection of mangrove ecosystem coral reef is the mangrove coast where mangrove forest species dominate the landscape area while sea grasses and seaweeds dominate the seascape area. During the first quarter of the year, the BMS has

monitored the BPLS to have at least more than 20 types of mangrove species which is vulnerable to poaching primarily for house construction and fishing-boat making. In her report, Beverly

Affordable and Reliable Access to Power: Our Dream, Our Decision By RUTCHIE AGUHOB MISAMIS Occidental–– The town of Baliangao will continue to highlight the conservation and protection of natural resources, foremost of which is its very rich mangrove ecosystem. Mayor Svetlana P. Jalosjos-De Leon said, protection of the ecosystem is a priority of the “SHINE Baliangao” Strategy reflective of the town’s five (5) themes: “Social Enterprise Development, Health and Social Services, Infrastructure Support, New Systems of Governance and Ecology and Education.” The mayor added the town’s mangrove ecosystem is settled at the Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape (BPLS) that has become a source of pride

to its people. A biological coast, the BPLS is located in the northern part of the province of Misamis Occidental, within the geographic coordinates of 8031’ to 8039’ east latitude and 123038’ to 123039’ north longitude. It is bounded in the north by the Danao Sea, in the east by Sinian River, in the west by Barangays Tugas and Misom and in the south by Barangay Landing of Baliangao. “The BPLS has a very rich biodiversity, therefore, it has a high risk of biodiversity loss, if not regularly monitored and guarded,” the mayor further said. Hence, the LGU with the help of the Protected Area Wildlife Coastal Zone Management System, Department of Environment and

Natural Resources (PAWCZMS-DENR) has set up a Biodiversity Monitoring Station (BMS) in the area. Spanning some two kilometers, the BMS serves as the guard post to prevent poachers and to conduct a periodic monitoring of the BPLS. The interactions of the living organisms with the natural coastal processes in the BPLS are brought about by the formation of combined coral reef and mangrove coasts, Exequiel A. Barillo, Protected Area Superintendent from DENR-Mis. Occ. said. “The coral reef coast is of fringing type which serves as a barrier and protection for the mangrove forest against strong waves,” according to Barillo. He also said behind the

Council holds training on disaster response management By RUBY LEONORA R. BALISTOY MALAYBALAY City––In a move to address problems on the right response in times of calamities in the city, a training on disaster response management like Incident Command System (ICS) and rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (DANA) was conducted from May 21 to 25 in Davao City. Mayor Ignacio Zubiri, in his message, said that there is really a need for the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council members to undergo trainings on ICS and DANA in order to establish and run an effective incident command post during calamities, and learn rapid damage assessment including the mechanics in disaster reporting. Focused on unified command system, the ICS lays down the procedures for responders such as assignment of responsibilities, structure for coordinated planning between agencies, clear lines of authority, and specified incident objectives for efficient and effective disaster response operations. Trainers include Carmelito Lupo, former regional director of the Office of Civil Defense, Region 10, and Joshue Go, Regional Director, National Telecommunications Commission in Region XI.

Dili kini madali. Nagkinahanglan kini’g panahon. Mag-atubang kini ug daghang babag ug kasilid-an. Isip konsumante ug isip membro sa kooperatiba, maoy akong damgo ug pangandoy; maoy akong disisyon “ to make electric power affordable and accessible to everyone.” Kon wala pa ikaw makahukom, kon wala pa kamo makahukom, Boot ko unta nga dapiton ikaw; boot ko unta nga dapiton kamo aron damgohon kini, ug magpakanaug sa inyong disisyon alang niini. Hand-in-hand, together we can make a difference, a big difference. Let’s move on! Thank you and best wishes to all. (Sgd.) ROMY P. TIONGCO Municipal Mayor Damulog, Bukidnon PD ADVT

PLARIDEL, Misamis Occidental––The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) backed by the Misamis Occidental Police Public Safety Company led by Sr. Insp. Bryan Reponte arrested two suspected drug pushers in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Panalsalan here. Reponte identified those arrested as Dic Ongkoy, alyas “Tata,” a businessman and resident of Barangay Molatohan, Lopez Jeana, and a jobless high school graduate Kevin Pading. Reponte said the suspects were riding a motorcycle in tandem. Police authorities flagged down the motorcycle shortly after suspects sold a sachet, believed containing “shabu,” to a poseur buyer. After body search, the police confiscated from the suspects seven heatsealed sachets, containing white crystalline substance believed to be “shabu,” and the P500 bill marked money bearing serial number DY557684. Also confiscated from the suspects were seven sliced of aluminum foils, and two disposable lighters. Sr. Supt. Raul Benitez, acting provincial police director, said Ongkoy was in PDEA’s watchlist.

compelling everyone to follow the “daang matuwid?” My answer to this question is a big NO. It will not stop corruption in the bureaucracy because the big crooks are not in the judiciary. The corrupt justices and judges could not become multi-millionaires overnight because there is nothing to squeeze or rob in the coffers of the judiciary as it only gets operational and maintenance budget from the national government. At most, they earned bloody money from lawyers and fixers of big cases pending in courts and this kind of money do not come to their doorsteps on daily basis. The big crooks are in the executive department and these include top guns of public works and highways, health, education, agriculture, finance, environment and natural resources, labor and employment, bureau of customs, bureau of internal revenue, government owned and controlled corporations and financial institutions. Of course, big crooks also abound in local government units. There are also giant grafters in the House of Representatives and the Senate. So, after two years is there any sign that can assure us that things will be better for our Bayang Magiliw? The second question is: Will the conviction of Corona translate to a big win for Liberal Party candidates, including its Senate slate, in the 2013 mid-term elections? Personally, I don’t think so. not exactly anti-Aquino, has a formidable Senate ticket and strong local candidates compared to the LP. In Metro Manila alone, the Liberal Party may only be limited to 4 or 5 mayoral seats out of the 16 cities and one municipality. In the meantime, let’s hope the country can now move forward after the four months of dirty manipulations, aided by media, undertaken mostly by pro-conviction groups. We look forward to the day that impeachment trials will be viewed by the citizenry as an ordinary legal/political process instead of being a great polarizer of people. illustrate God’s great care for our souls. If God had no care for us, or but little care for us, he would not use so much effort to urge us to secure salvation. Why is it that God reiterates these commands so importantly, giving line upon line? He knows our circumstances. He sees how great our wants are, and how many, and therefore he says--your soul is in danger and will be lost if you suffer your attention to the cares for earthly things. I say, nothing is valuable to us unless we mean to seek first the kingdom of God. Every enjoyment, even life itself, is a curse to him who is treasuring up wrath

against the day of wrath. It were better for you not to have lived at all unless you seek first the blessing of God and eternal life. Quit worrying about the things––the cars, the houses, the lands and the prosperity. These things will take care of themselves if you’ll just get yourself lined up with God and His Kingdom. Seeking God’s Kingdom first is getting people saved and ministering to the needs and hurts of others. Actually, the reason why many Christians are not having the things added unto them, even though they believe God and making all the right confessions, is because they are seeking first the things––not the Kingdom of God.
