Hotcarz invades Oro Social entrepreneurship takes a new drift with auto show Text and photos by Mike Banos
CAGAYAN de Oro City––Social Entrepreneurship projects have literally taken a new drift in Cagayan de Oro with the advent of what aims to be Northern Mindanao’s biggest motor show aimed at raising funds for the economic upliftment of victims of the Tropical Storm Sendong disaster.
The 1st Cagayan de Oro International Motor Show dubbed “HOTCARZ Cagayan de Oro” is slated for March 30-April 1st, 2012 at the SM City Cagayan de Oro Car park Building and the Pueblo de Oro Business Park Grounds. “This is a non-profit major fundraiser that would serve as a portal for the automotive industry to manifest their support and channel their contributions and
donations to the victims of Tropical Storm Sendong in cash, kind, services or empty 1.5L or 2L PET Bottles,” said Elmer Francisco, president of ROUTE 11 (1111 Motor Corp.), an automotive service center which is spearheading the show with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber), SM City CDO, Pueblo de Oro Development Corpo- ration, eFF Elmer
Francisco Foundat i o n and MyShelter Foundation. As a social entrepreneurship venture, the exhibit
aims to raise funds for the Isang Litrong Liwanag Project and the Sendongpreneur project of the Oro Chamber and eFF-Elmer Francisco Foundation. “All of the show’s the proceeds will be for the benefit of the three projects,” Mr. Francisco added. “HOTCARZ is a motor show series that started in 2006 at Las Piñas City to promote brand new and preowned vehicles, automotive spare parts, accessories, consumables and after sales services; thus, uplifting the whole automotive industry,” Mr. Francisco recalls. The CDO show would feature dressedup show cars/ bikes in competition; aftermarket automotive OEM, spare parts, accessories and consumables; aftermarket services; banks with auto financing options and insurance, and ancillary businesses to the automotive industry.
Among the activity highlights are test drives of latest models from local distributors and importers; demos of slalom and drifting; presentations of the Sendongpreneur, Isang Litrong Liwanag and Isang Litrong Bahay Projects, Miss HOTCARZ 2012 and a photo competition. The Sendongpreneur project aims to provide start-up capital and training for Sendong survivors who have been displaced from their former communities and are now living in temporary shelters within and outside evacuation centers. Isang Litrong Liwanag, a project in cooperation with MyShelter Foundation, aims to produce and install a million Solar Bottle Bulbs in a million households 2012. Isang Litrong Bahay is another project with MyShelter Foundation which aims to construct a training center where beneficiaries would be taught how to build houses from empty PET Bottles with the help of DOST-Department of Science and Technology, MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Hassel Studios.
“With Isang Litrong Liwanag and Isang Litrong Bahay projects, we could keep away those empty PET Bottles that we just usually throw away and end up being burned in dumpsites or clogging our drainage systems; moreover, we could turn them into Solar Bottle Bulbs and affordable yet reliable houses,” Mr. Francisco said. eFF is coordinating with various government and non-government organizations such as DSWD-Department of Social Welfare
Development, CSWD-City Social Welfare Development, DTI-Department of Trade and Industry, DOLEDepartment of Labor and Employment, OB-Operation Blessing, CRS-Catholic Relief Service, HRC-Humanitarian Response Consortium, IDRN-International Disaster Response Network, ILO-International Labor Organization of the United Nations, UNDP-United Nations Development Program, Child Fund International and the UNFPA-United Nations Population Fund.

Five soldiers wounded in Surigao ambushed By CRIS DIAZ, Associate Editor
FIVE ARMY soldiers were wounded when their military convoy were ambushed by unidentified armed group believed members of the communist rebel guerrillas in Mainit, Surigao del Norte Wednesday night. A belated police report reaching Mindanao Daily last night identified the
wounded as Sgt. Dela A. Bano, Pfc Steve G. Gapoy, Pvt April June G. Añasco, Pvt. Ryan B. Corton and Pvt. Michael D. Gonzaga, all of the army’s 30th Infantry Battalion based in Placer, Surigao del Norte. Initial investigation disclosed that government troops led by Lt. Ian Christopher Molina
and a certain Lt. Mendoza were on board two KM250 and one KM450 en route to their headquarters in Placer Wednesday night when waylaid by the armed rebels. Police said that the convoy hit an improvised explosive device attached to an electrical post owned by the Surigao del Norte Electric Cooperative in Sitio Subang Daan, Ba-
rangay Cantugas, Mainit, Surigao del Norte. The improvised explosive believed planted by members of the communist New People’s Army belonging to Guerilla Front 16 exploded when the government troops passed by. A 10-minute gun battle ensued following the explosion, which resulted in the wounding of five soldiers, the police report said.
Elements of the Mainit Municipal Police Station responded to reinforce the beleaguered government troops and engaged the withdrawing rebels. Recovered from the scene of the encounter were one pair black rubber boots, eight fired cartridges of calibre 5.56, six pieces dry cell battery and assorted length of electrical wires.
Recovered items are now in the custody of Mainit police station. Police believed that the explosion of the improvised explosive was triggered by a battery operated triggering device. Except for the wounded, no fatality was reported on the government troops. The police report did not also mention if the rebels suffered casualties. cd

Part of the Park Terraces App features a sneak preview of Ayala Land Inc.’s (ALI) major redevelopment plan for Ayala Center - largely known for being a microcosm of the Makati CBD. The blueprint shows the neighboring business, comercial and recreational establishments that are present and will soon emerge in the district. “The redevelopment of Ayala Center is just part of ALI’s groundbreaking plans in making Makati a mixed-use development. Insidious form of manipulation of oil prices By BENJIE OLIVEROS, Bulatlat.com
Last part In a research, “Who is in the oil futures market and how has it changed?” written by Kenneth B. Medlock III in 2009 revealed that in the NYMEX, an equivalent of 600 million barrels, which is about seven times the daily volume of current oil demand, is being traded everyday. He also revealed that there are two types of traders in the NYMEX: the commercial traders, who include the producers and consumers, and the noncommercial traders, who include the speculators and financial institutions. The ICE, on the other hand, deals with Brent crude or north sea oil. The ICE is unregulated because technically it is not based in the US but in London; it specializes
in over-the-counter (OTC) trade; and it is an electronic trading platform. Add this to the fact that ICE was founded by a combination of hedge fund managers, banks, and oil companies and you have the perfect formula for speculation. The cabal of speculators in oil futures and the giant oil companies practically has a free hand in the ICE. So the result is frantic speculation and manipulation of prices in the ICE. The article “Global Oil Scam” revealed an insidious form of manipulation of prices going on in the ICE: “round-trip trade.” Davis wrote, “Round-trip trades occur when one firm sells energy to another, and then the second firm simultaneously sells the same amount PRICES/p.7

Lifelong pleasure THINK a minute. A father was outside with his son when he saw two geese. Wanting to teach his son about true love and faithfulness, he said: “You know, son, geese mate for life.” His son looked concerned and asked: “Don’t they do anything else, Dad?” One of God’s greatest gifts to us is sex. But like everything else, there’s a right way and a wrong way to use it. So since God invented sex, He’s the One who knows the correct purpose for it. This is why we need to understand His plan for this lifelong pleasure. First, sex produces life itself. The fact that through this simple act of love other human beings are born with souls that live forever is both awesome and scary! In this way, sex is the
Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst greatest power we humans possess—so we must be very careful to use it correctly or we’ll destroy not just our life but many other lives, even generations after us. Secondly, sex is personal. No one is just a body. God made us in His likeness with a mind, emotions, and soul. So the act of sex is not just physical. Just using someone’s body to give you physical pleasure and satisfaction is what animals do. A recent study in a cer-
tain Pacific country showed that each person had an average of 57 different sex partners during their lifetime. That is not God’s plan and purpose for sex. Real, satisfying sex is expressing your deepest love to the one person in the world whom you’ve chosen to responsibly live with every day of your life. Third, sex is permanent. God’s plan for sex is not just a one-night stand, but a pleasure for a lifetime. It only makes sense that
through the years of love and intimacy, the pleasure just gets better with your wife or husband because you get to know each other much better. As the saying goes: “Love is like wine: it gets better with age.” Love just grows deeper as you grow together through both the good times and the bad. That’s the only kind of love that satisfies and lasts. If you haven’t been using sex the way it’s made to be enjoyed as a lifelong pleasure that’s productive, personal, and permanent, you can ask Jesus to forgive you. Then ask Him to change you and help you to control and use your sexual desires rightly, so you’ll learn to enjoy this gift from God with the one you love for a lifetime. Just Think a Minute.
Butuan City’s glory is gone! BUTUAN City–Once dubbed as ‘The Timber City of the South,’ Butuan City was the logging capital of the Philippines in the early 50s. Growing up in the riverbank of the great Agusan River was one of the most memorable recollections of my younger days. I learned to swim and frolic in the once crystal-clear river teaming with fresh water crustaceans Cris Diaz and fish. We spent much of our summer days in the river. We strolled, play and ran in the river’s black sand beaches that once witnessed thousands untold stories of the past. Fly-fishing was once the hobby of the old and young where large prawns and fish locally known as ‘Esail’ (Bunog) and ‘Kikilo’ once thrived in abundance. There were mollusks known as ‘Bibe’ that would almost fill a whole rigger boat when its season comes. The most price catch was the elusive ‘eel’ and the large fresh water fish locally known as ‘gingaw.’ ‘Gingaw’ catching was through a large basket-like trap made of bamboo sticks. ‘Bantak,’ a basket-like trap made of rattan (a smaller version of the Gingaw trap), was another way of catching shrimps, prawns and assorted fresh water fishes. Another delicacy in Agusan River was ‘Banak, a silvery fish that could be part of the family of ‘Bangus.’ All these freshwater treasures were abundant in the once lush Agusan River. Logging thrived along Agusan River in the early
50s. Log ponds of big logging companies abound in riverbanks. Motor boats, speedboats and lunches were the means of transportation then. Agusan River was the most reliable commercial highways of both loggers and mountain folks. I would tell you, there were no crocs. If ever, we were not afraid of crocs then. Wanna bet? We could swim as fast as Tarzan, the mythical lord of the jungles. Yes, I grew up in a mountain of endless natural treasure. I learned to love and lived with it. I witnessed the days when Agusan River started to lay gasping in deathbed. Today, in just a matter of three decades since the 1950s, Agusan River is dead! The mountains in Agusan had lost its natural treasures. The people who once relied for a living in the bounty of virgin forest and the abundance of fresh water resources now lived in destitution. The aftermath of raping the forest offered nothing but misery toward the people who relied for a living in Agusan River and its verdant forest. The crystal-clear river turned murky and muddy. Gone were the black sands along the riverbanks where we used to roll, crawl and threw ball of sands. Gone were the fresh water fishes. House labor committee set to approve P125 wage hike bill By MARYA SALAMAT Bulatlat.com
Last part Profits, meanwhile, continue to bloat especially for big employers. As workers struggle to stretch their wages, the “Top ten firms in the country more than doubled their income in ten years from P576 billion ($13.1billion) to P1.26 trillion ($29 billion), an amount equivalent to the annual salaries of 10 million minimum wage earners,” said Maglunsod.
In announcing the House committee’s likely approval of the proposed nationwide wage hike, Northern Samar Rep. Emil Ong, chairman of House labor committee, also called for distributing the wealth created by workers. He said his committee is studying profit-sharing schemes. For Rep. Ong, that would also benefit the government in terms of greater transparency and thus greater efficiency at knowing how much taxes these companies really owe the government. “We welcome the House
Committee on Labor’s approval of the P125 Wage Hike Bill. We vow to intensify our protests to call for the House plenary’s approval of this most urgent and long-overdue of bills,” said Elmer “Bong” Labog, chairman of KMU. “We are glad that some members of the House of Representatives are already taking steps to help workers and poor people gain some relief from the rising prices of basic goods and services,” he added. The KMU and other labor groups have repeat-
edly said their experiences showed through the years “that we cannot rely on the country’s regional wage boards to give us a significant wage hike,” Labog said. The KMU praised also as “productive” the regional hearings conducted by the House Committee on Labor. It seemed to have clarified the basis for passing the P125 Wage Hike Bill. Ong has disclosed that businessmen in Mindanao also did not oppose the measure, mainly because approving it would still BILL/p.5

mean that the wage level in the island is still lower than that in Metro Manila. “The hearings showed the country’s legislators how badly workers need a significant wage hike. It also showed them that capitalists across the country have the capacity to grant a substantial wage increase,” Labog said. The hearings have reportedly showed the labor committee that the real value of workers’ wages has been shrinking due to incessant price hikes. “Workers have been made poorer and hungrier by the government’s refusal to approve a significant wage hike for a decade now,” Labog added. KMU called on Reps. Marc Douglas Cagas IV (1st Dist., Davao del Sur), Philip Pichay (1st Dist., Surigao del Sur), Antonio Lagdameo (2nd Dist., Davao del Norte), and Cesar G. Jalosjos (3rd District, Zamboanga del Norte) to become co-sponsors of the bill, having attended the last hearing in Davao. “We are calling on legislators who attended the P125 Wage Hike Bill’s regional hearings to become co-sponsors. It should be clear to them by now that workers across the country are really clamoring for a substantial wage hike,” Labog said. (http://bulatlat.com)

Misoc intensifies bamboo planting along rivers OZAMIZ City - Planting bamboo trees along the rivers is good alternative to the Banyan or the so-called “balite” trees. Like the banyan tree, bamboo trees can absorb a good amount of rain water and has the characteristic to firmly hold the ground prevent soil erosion during flashfloods. This the reason why the Misamis Occidental Provincial Government, together with the private sector, has intensified its campaign for the Misamisnons to plant
bamboo trees. “There is now a need to adapt to climate change and before it’s too late, we have to intensify planting trees to protect the environment,” Governor Herminia M. Ramiro said. Aside from its potentials to provide a balance in nature, bamboo trees can provide livelihood because of the products that can be derived from it, such as, wood to build houses, fences, furniture, fixtures, raw materials for handicrafts and many more.
We learned that the bamboo tree cannot be easily uprooted and carried away by the flashfloods because the roots around it are deeply fastened to the ground. Meanwhile, the Governor said people should properly dispose the unused portion of the bamboo, like the end branches after harvesting the tree trunk so that they cannot cause obstruction and prevent the natural flow of the river during heavy rains resulting in flashfloods and landslides. SBM, nucleus in improving educational system By ELVIE MEDADO-MAGBUJOS, Contributor
THE Department of Education (DepEd) has tightened its effort to decentralize education management, a strategy that is expected to improve the Departments operating efficiency and upgrade education quality. Schools are now urged to fully implement the School Based Management (SBM), a key component
of basic education Sector Reform Agenda or BESRA. Former Education Secretary Jesli Lapus stated that “With SBM, the school as the key provider of education, will be equipped to empower its key officials to make informed and localized decisions based on their unique needs towards improving our educational
system” SBM gives clarity that planning and consultations are done at the grassroots level it follows that the planners are the ones who does the actions. It c re at e s an e nv i ronment where all the stakeholders involved in the plans not only agree but also give their time, resources and efforts to make change happen in
the school and community as well. In this new process, school heads and teachers are hone to develop their human relation skills and managerial capabilities. Here, oppor tunities await that each potentialities will shine as empowered leaders and engine of growth and transformation in our school. SBM practitioner are
expected to; be an empowered school with an “outward-looking orientation” school head, have innovative teachers who can Identify their problems in their classroom and devise plans and course of actions to address the problem at their level, have close collaboration and sense of spirit of enterprise with community stake holders and in so doing improved
student performance. There are a lot of assumptions in the implementation of SBM both healthy and unhealthy ones, but we just tighten our seat belts, give our trust and confidence as we take off our flight towards excellence. Have faith that this is a strategy which paves the way to the attainment of quality education.
Growth and development through problems By LOTES N. FLORES, Contributor
MANY administrators find it very unpleasant and difficult to deal with their challenges and problems. They spend a great deal of time wondering why this happened to them and consider the challenge as great burden and obstacle in their progress. What really makes problems so frightening is that they usually present themselves without any warning and shake our confidence in our capabilities. They come to us when we least expect them and make us realize how feeble and frail we are in the face of challenges. The suddenness with which problems confront us often amplifies them out of
proportion. But if we look at problems from a positive perspective, we can face up to them more easily and gain useful and valuable experience in our endeavors to overcome them. Tests, difficulties and problems help us in our growth and development. In other words, without problems and difficulties our development could be retarded. No pain, no gain. Hence, we should not view problems as stumbling blocks but rather as Godgiven opportunities. Solving problems and facing difficulties would provide us with insight and useful experience which in turn could empower us to sort

out future dilemmas with more ease. Failures, tests, and trials, if we use them correctly, can become the means of purifying our spirits, strengthening our characters, and enable us to rise to greater heights of service. Problems are very effective in reminding us of our feebleness and in purifying us. Whenever we face a difficult situation, we must try to see a meaning and wisdom in it. Sometimes it may be very difficult to do so especially if we are too preoccupied with the problem itself. But if we are patient and manage to solve the difficulty, there is a great chance of finding the wisdom in it and of
discovering its usefulness in educating us. Moreover, we are told that tests are gifts of God. That is how we must view our problems- as gifts and bounties from God. Viewing problems as gifts of God and learning opportunities will enable us to handle them more effectively and discover the wisdom in them. To be able to view problems in this light, however, is not an easy task. As was explained before, problems often confront us without any prior warning and catch us off guard. The key to handling problems is, therefore, accepting the challenge courageously and not becoming overwhelmed by them. This attitude that of facing tests and trials gallantly is not developed

overnight. An important element which would help us passes through these stages and fosters the right the right attitude towards problems is to always look at the end of things. A farmer happily undergoes all the sufferings and difficulties associated with plowing
the land, sowing the seeds, watering, weeding and caring for seedlings because he knows that in the end he would reap a rich harvest. In the same way, keeping the end in mind would help us bear with hardships and difficulties of life and continuously strive to press onwards.

of energy back to the first company at exactly the same price. No commodity ever changes hands. But when done on an exchange, these transactions send a price signal to the market and they artificially boost revenue for the company. This is nothing more than a massive fraud, pure and simple.” According to Philips, two players in the ICE oil futures market admitted that they are engaging in roundtrip trades, when investigated by the US Congress. DMS energy, according to Philips, admitted that 80 percent of its trades in ICE in 2001 were round-trip trades. Duke Energy, on the other hand, admitted that it engaged in roundtrip trades in the amount of $1.1 billion. Round-trip trades create artificial demand that pushes up the price of oil. and actual demand – and, together with speculation by hedge fund managers and banks, take advantage of international events, which have not yet created an impact in demand or supply, to push prices further up. Round-trip trades are more insidious because it is being done arbitrarily, with or without events that could potentially create a supply or demand shock. And round-trip trades are made possible by ICE, which is a creation and an instrument of giant oil companies, hedge fund managers or financial investment houses, and banks to profit from the sufferings of the peoples of the world. There is an idiom in Filipino that describes a situation where one is be-
ing manipulated or fooled: “being cooked in one’s oil.” Round-trip trade is worse because price increases could be done with no justification at all, imagined or otherwise. Would we allow this to continue happening or would we begin making our voices heard? Some, especially governments, say that we could do nothing about the spikes in oil prices. That is a lot of bull because prices are being artificially pushed up due to the insatiable greed for profits of giant oil companies, speculators,
financial investment houses and banks and not by any supernatural, abstract entity that economists call as the market. And the only way to counter this is through political pressure, which governments would not do because they are being controlled by these very same giant companies, hedge fund managers, and banks. The only political pressure that would make governments, giant oil companies, financial investment houses, and banks take notice are gigantic protest actions, which demonstrate the collective will of the people.
