But, yes, once again there is talk of turning the falls off at least on the American side. This is not something new. A similar situation occurred in the summer of 1969 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers diverted water away from the American Falls to study erosion. Since 85 percent of the water goes down the Canadian side of the Niagara River and only 15 percent on the American side, this is not as difďŹ cult to do as you might think. What they did in 1969 was build a cofferdam out into the river between the shore and Goat Island by dumping dirt and rock to block the ow of the water. This stopped the ow of water to what is commonly known as the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. Water continued to ow over the Canadian or Horseshoe falls.
