The Five Boroughs of New York City

by Ali B Zagat

New York City is always happening. Everywhere you look, there is something new (or renewed) to see, do, taste and experience – and an opportunity that bus tours should not pass by.

Live Theater

The reilluminated lights of Broadway will beckon buses to the Theatre District. All of this season’s new plays are by black playwrights; Thoughts of a Colored Man is the first play in Broadway history to feature a black writer, director and cast, as well as a predominantly black producing team. Sondheim fans will not want to miss the West End revival of Company. Shows returning this fall include perennial powerhouses Chicago, Hamilton, The Lion King and Wicked.

Cultural Vibrancy

The cultural contributions of NYC’s diverse communities are undeniable. Just look to the cuisines of Queens; send buses to Flushing for dumplings and Astoria for souvlaki.

Black culture shines citywide, and The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art showcases groundbreaking exhibitions and workshops. The Apollo Theater and Black Spectrum Theatre host film screenings and live productions featuring black creators.

Now a major motion picture, In The Heights brought the city’s vibrant Latino culture into the spotlight, but there is more to explore. El Museo del Barrio’s fine arts exhibitions, educational programming and cultural celebrations are a great entry point.

An Unmatched Dining Scene

In NYC, dining is an experience – not a pit stop. The spacious Bronx Beer Hall is ideal for groups and sits amid the Bronx’s Little Italy: Arthur Avenue. Outdoor dining is another great option for large parties – the setups at Boucherie West Village and Scarpetta are especially spectacular.

Clients can nourish body and soul at Melba’s, a destination for comfort food. Pizza connoisseurs will debate the merits of Philomena’s Pizza’s Neapolitan-style vs. Amorina Cucina Rustica’s Roman-style thin-crust pies.

Basilica & National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation

Since 1875, pilgrims of many backgrounds and traditions have journeyed to the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, Carey, Ohio to experience the powerful intercession and the maternal comfort of Mary, Consoler of the Afflicted.

This Shrine began as a parish church in the 1860s. Then, Father Joseph Gloden, a native of Luxembourg, inspired other immigrants from Luxembourg living in Carey, to acquire a statue of Our Lady of Consolation, the patroness of their native land honored in the cathedral of the capital city. From the time that statue arrived, countless people have experienced God’s presence and Our Lady’s intercession in a powerful way.

For people of faith, life is a journey leading ultimately to perfect joy and happiness in God’s eternal presence. A pilgrimage is a journey to a sacred place; it is symbolic of life’s journey and offers an opportunity to reflect on where you have been and where you are going.

Visitors may attend daily Mass in the Basilica or just enjoy some time for private prayer in the Original Shrine Church. The-30 acre Shrine Park with its shaded walkways and beautiful landscaping provides a natural setting for the Stations of the Cross. The Shrine Gift Shop offers religious books, rosaries and gifts for the shopper and is open seven days a week (closed holidays).

Our Lady of Consolation offers a number of special events throughout the year. All are welcome at any time on their journey to faith, hope and healing. q OurLadyofConsolation
