Bush Library and Museum

NOTE: Please verify the current operating status of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum by visiting bush41.org. When the museum is open, purchase your admission tickets in advance via the “Plan Your Visit” tab or by a special “Purchase Museum Tickets” link on the homepage.

Even if the museum is closed, you can experience it from the comfort of your own home with the virtual tour. Use the arrows to explore a century of American and world history as you travel through the life of George Bush. View family photos, the Camp David office, White House Situation Room, a portion of the Berlin Wall, the Oval Office and more. You can also check out the new storytelling programs for all ages under the education tab on the Web site, focusing on the environment, chemistry and the Constitution.

There are some exciting exhibits on display through July 5, 2022. The first is called Texas Sea Grant: 50 Years of Science & Stewardship, and is located in the Ansary Gallery of American History. A hallmark of Texas A&M University is its status as a land, sea, and spacegrant university. One of those programs – the Texas Sea Grant College Program – is celebrating 50 years of science and stewardship at the Bush Library and Museum.

The second temporary exhibit is called Oceans of Plastic. Plastic pollution, particularly in the oceans, is one of the most pressing consumer and environmental issues being faced today. Oceans of Plastic is a strangely beautiful collection of art made of plastics acquired by artist and beachcomber Shelia Rogers from beaches along the Texas Gulf Coast.

A third exhibit, George Bush: An Environmental President, highlights the 27 environmental laws enacted by President Bush, including the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment, largely considered to be one of the most significant environmental acts in the 20th century.

Steubenville, Ohio

Everyone loves a story and you can find your favorite one on a visit to Steubenville and Jefferson County, Ohio. Stories of the past are uniquely presented in the City of Murals where 25 larger-than-life works of art reflect the area and America’s growth. Well-known figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Steubenville native son Dean Martin

share the fame with less familiar personalities such as “Sloopy” and Fleetwood Walker. Knowledgeable and entertaining step-on guides are available to tell the stories behind each of the paintings.

Tales of the early American frontier come to life at Historic Fort Steuben, a completely reconstructed fort built on the original site overlooking the Ohio River. Adjacent to the Fort is the First Federal Land Office west of the Alleghenies – built in 1801 as an early American home office. Copies of genealogy records of early settlers are on file here. An on-going archaeology dig is on site with historical displays in the Fort Steuben Visitor Center. Find old-fashioned games and toys as well as historical books and souvenirs at the Museum Shop.

Stories are depicted in the stained-glass windows and architecture of Steubenville’s Historic Downtown Churches. A visit to the Antique Warehouse with its huge selection of antiques and memorabilia will trigger memorable moments from your past.

Just 20 minutes from the city is the Quaker village of Historic Mount Pleasant, an important site of the Underground Railroad in the 19th century. Stories of the brave souls that worked for abolition still inspire visitors today. After touring the village, enjoy locally produced wine at Black Sheep Vineyard or one of The Farm Restaurant’s specialty desserts. Both venues have their own stories to tell.

The holiday season brings out the area’s magical Steubenville Nutcracker Village and Advent Market. This event features more than 180 life-size nutcrackers depicting characters from children’s stories, literature, movies, professions, legends and entertainment under an array of colorful lights and

music throughout the downtown. The Christmas Gift Shop, Drosselmeyer’s Nutcracker Shoppe and other merchants offer additional holiday shopping and fun.

Excellent lodging options and a variety of dining experiences make an overnight stay a unique travel experience.
