Buzz on the Bus News and notes for bus tour planners Update: Chicago “Party Bus” Ordinance In the March/April 2018 issue BUS TOURS MAGAZINE reported on Chicago’s “Party Bus” Ordinance, which states buses transporting 15 or more passengers must have a security guard and cameras on board if passengers intend to drink alcohol on the bus or visit a location that serves alcohol. Those scheduling school field trips or youth group outings will be pleased to know the ordinance’s security guard requirement will not be enforced provided passengers remain dry during their trip. On October 12, Rupal Bapat, deputy commissioner of Chicago’s Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP), explained in an e-mail, “The ordinance only requires that a security guard be present if the bus is transporting at least 15 passengers and there is an opportunity for passengers to drink alcohol on the bus or at an interim stop.

“We feel that requiring a small fee for group tours to make use of these properties is reasonable as we have never charged before and we carried the burden of staffing and upkeep. This is the perfect way for these properties to be properly cared for so that tourists may enjoy them for years to come.” Due to limited parking and their goal to provide visitors with onsite service, Pike County also requests tour companies and receptors provide them with advance notice of incoming tours they have scheduled. Ghost Ranch Abiquiu, New Mexico Ghost Ranch is the site of one of the best-known paleontological digs in the Northern Hemisphere, yielding an abundance of well-preserved Coelophysis skeletons. Before the 1947 discovery, this reptile, one of the oldest and most primitive carnivorous dinosaurs, was known only from scant fossil evidence. The discovery is considered by some as one of the most important single fossil finds in the American Triassic, and the 55-acre Coelophysis Quarry was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1976. The landscape of Ghost Ranch – made famous by painter Georgia O’Keeffe – encompasses 21,000 acres of towering rock walls, vivid

sonopolis changed its name to Jacksonburgh before simply becoming Jackson. The community served as an early meeting location for the newly formed Republican Party, which is commemorated by the Under the Oaks monument. Groups interested in local history should visit
the Mann House, the Coe House Museum, Waterloo Farm Museum, St. Demetrius Orthodox Church and the Ella Sharp Museum. Sparks Foundation County Park, also known as Cascades Park, is home to Cascade Falls, a unique hillside water fountain, and the Cascades Ice Cream Co. The park hosts numerous summer events, including Civil War re-enactments with a live show, complete with artillery fire and music, performed by the Jackson Civil War Muster. Famous local eateries and chocolatiers include Jackson Coney Island, Gilbert Chocolates and The Parlour, where patrons can “Dare to be Great” by polishing off a 21-scoop sundae. Jackson has many restaurants, bakeries, breweries and shops to enjoy, and area hotels make perfect hubs for hub and spoke tours of south-central Michigan. For more information, visit experiencejackson.com or phone (517) 764-4440.
Historic Prison Tours – Jackson Two years after attaining statehood, Michigan built its first state prison in 1839. The original wooden prison, referred to as “The Tamaracks,” was soon replaced by a larger brick structure now known as The Old State Prison and Armory Arts Village, a commercial and residential haven for local artists. In addition to touring the Old State Prison, groups visit Cell Block 7, a museum within the still functioning State Prison of Southern Michigan. In disuse since 2007, Cell Block 7 gives visitors a rare glimpse at a contemporary prison and its history and inmates through semi-permanent and temporary exhibits. For more information, visit historicprisontours.com.
Lost Railway Museum – Grass Lake Opened in 2017, the Lost Railway Museum houses a collection of restored Victorian and early 20th century vehicles, such as a horse-drawn trolley that once served passengers on Coronado Beach, San Diego. The trolley has even appeared in the films Hello Dolly and Newsies. Visitors can also see early bicycles and a rail car, number 47, from Chicago. Number 47 is typical of what ran on Jackson County’s electric interurban lines, which connected passengers to Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Jackson and Lansing before the rise of the automobile. Speaking of automobiles, the museum has a Ford Model T that dates from 1909. For more information, visit lostrailwaymuseum.org.
Michigan International Speedway – Grass Lake Michigan International Speedway (MIS) has been the state’s premier racing facility since 1968. Thanks to the vision of Lawrence H. LoPatin, the track is nestled on more than 1,400 acres in the lush Irish Hills in southeastern Michigan. The track will host a pair of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races in 2019. NASCAR’s most entertaining track will host the Monster Energy Series FireKeepers Casino 400 on June 9 and the Consumers Energy 400 on August 11. The Faster Horses Festival returns to MIS for the seventh consecutive year. Toby Keith, Keith Urban and Zac Brown Band will headline the three-day country music festival. mances. TLP presents a mix of large-scale musicals, new plays and contemporary classics. The theater hosts annual educational workshops for children and teens in conjunction with the Magic Owl Children’s Theater’s production of plays and musicals for young people and their families. Each summer, TLP produces the All-Area Teen Production and the Next Stages production for youths seven through 12. In October, you can wander, if you dare, through the haunted Timber Lake. Hear the footsteps coming from nowhere as you move quietly through the wooded trails and the two indoor haunts. You may think it is over, but it is just beginning. Timber Lake Terror includes two haunted trails, two haunted buildings, an escape room and closes out the Halloween season with an interactive showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Resident Company consists of 35-40 performers, technicians and musicians selected by interviews and auditions in cities across the country. Numerous guest and equity performers, directors and choreographers supplement the resident company each season. This summer’s season includes: Disney’s The Little Mermaid (5/306/16); Noises Off (6/20-30); Into the Woods (7/5-14); Mama Mia! (7/188/4); Man of La Mancha (8/8-18); Steel Magnolias (8/22-7/1); and Disney’s Newsies (9/12-22). Bus groups with 10 or more passengers receive a $10 discount off the $30 adult ticket price. TLP can arrange your group’s meal at a local restaurant, have a full menu catered onsite, or you can eat at the newly opened Deck Bar for a unique lakeside al fresco experience.
