Issue 1, Spring 2010 Q. My home computer is not working right. Can you guys help me out?
Tech Talk with the Computer Help Guys Q: Hey Computer Help Guys. As a faculty member, can I order special software for my classroom lab using campus funds? A: Good question. The answer is MAYBE! If you need to order software with campus funds for campus-owned devices (for lab or office), please contact the Computing Help Desk (8784357, or chd@buffalostate.edu) to submit your order. Please be ready to provide the following information: software title, purpose (i.e. Academic, Administrative, Research), number of licenses required, platform (PC or Mac), device name or lab name plus building/room, and funding source (i.e. Tech Fee or Department Funds). If the software you are ordering is not a common title that we recognize, we may ask for a Web site address for purchase information and negotiation. Again, to order software with campus funds, please contact the Computing Help Desk.
Q. I’m really broke. Can you guys get me a good deal on some software? A. You’re in luck! Buffalo State faculty, staff and students may take advantage of substantial savings, ranging from 40% – 90% off, on popular software titles such as Adobe, Microsoft Office and SPSS. For more information, go to http://www.ubmicro.buffalo.edu/1/bsc.php/
A. We can’t work on home computers, but we can send you to the right place. Buffalo State has partnered with UB Micro to offer a convenient pickup and delivery service to faculty, staff, and students for repairs of personally owned computers. For more information, go to http://www.ubmicro.buffalo.edu/1/bsc.php/
Q. Hey Computer Help Guys, is it okay to use my kid’s first name as a password? A. We really don’t recommend it. Your password should be as strong as possible - avoid using dictionary words, names of people you know (such as your children), phone numbers, or anything else that might easily be associated with you. Your password must be 6 to 14 characters long, and should contain a combination of upper/lower case letters, numbers, and special characters. Protect your accounts, files, and other computer resources by periodically changing your Buffalo State password. To do so, visit the Password Change Utility (http://chngpwd.buffalostate.edu/ ). Note: Changing your Buffalo State password will affect the following campus systems: Campus Logon, EMail/Barracuda, ANGEL, Library Databases, Online Directories, CyberQuad Registration, SUNY Administration System, and Degree Navigator (initial logon). Word to the Wise: Never share your passwords with anyone for any reason, and never logon to campus computers for someone else! Doing so violates the campus policy on the use of electronic resources.
Q. Hey Computer Help Guys. What if I have another Tech Talk question? A. If you have Tech Talk questions you’d like to see answered in this column, please send them to the editor at forresla@buffalostate.edu. For all other inquiries, please contact the Computer Help Desk at x4357 or chd@buffalostate.edu
