Nicknamed the Crossroads of America, Indy is a city of learners and doers. And Butler University plays a huge role in the life of the city. We partner with local businesses large and small so you’ll have incredible opportunities to explore your future career. And our strong relationship with the community gives students plenty of chances for service learning and volunteering. You’ll also discover museums filled with priceless art, exhilarating professional sports, and other experiences that will enrich your education and expand your worldview. Whether you’re volunteering with a local charity, gaining valuable experience in the business world, or helping shape young minds in local schools, at Butler, your experiences will shape your life for the next four years and beyond.
GRADUATE
WITH
4 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS From career advising to networking events, Butler has many resources to help you find the internship or full-time job that’s right for you. Last year, over 500 employers and organizations attended on-campus job fairs or interviews to recruit students for promising careers. If you’re ever wondering how to get started on your job search, the Career and Professional Success Office will help set you on the right path.
While at Butler, Art + Design and English double major MEGAN TRUE ’19 had the opportunity to complete three internships–one at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites–and the other two at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. She also conducted research during the Butler Summer Institute, and later presented the research at several conferences and was even published in an academic journal. She’s now pursuing her Master’s in Museum Studies at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. “My internship experiences played a key role in my admission to my master’s program. And my experiences at Butler in general without a doubt helped get me to where I am today.”
Whatever you’re interested in, there’s no teacher like experience. That’s why we stress the importance of internships and hands-on learning. In fact, more than 75 percent of Butler students complete one or more internships for academic credit, and all business students complete two. That way, when you find your dream job, you’ll have the valuable experience— inside the classroom and out in the field—that employers desire most in a job candidate.

Bull dogs domore in their first week than most students do in their first year.
EVERY AUGUST as the sun rises over Indy, so do hundreds of first-year Butler students who encircle the city as part of our annual Bulldogs Into the Streets program. It’s our voluntary, day-long service event for Butler community members and alumni to make a meaningful impact on Indianapolis. Volunteering is just the beginning of community engagement at Butler. The Indianapolis Community Requirement, which combines academic learning with relevant community service, is also a part of every Butler student’s education. Through both the Indianapolis Community Requirement and the Social Justice and Diversity requirement— another component of Butler’s Core Curriculum—all students take at least one course that involves active engagement with the community and one course that promotes the importance of social justice and diversity. This inspires many to continue their involvement throughout their time at Butler. Why? Because these experiences help students better understand themselves and their world, discern what gives their lives meaning, discover new skills they never imagined before, and forge connections with people on campus and in the city they’ll call home these next few years. At other schools, this might be a lot to expect, but that’s just what Bulldogs do.
100% of Butler students actively engage in partnerships in the Indianapolis community through the Indianapolis Community Requirement that is part of Butler’s Core Curriculum.

SAM ROYAL, EROMO ALIGBE, KAMERON LEISURE, GERALYN MILLER AND MAYA GRANDSTAFF all enrolled in the Engineering Projects in Community Services (EPICS) program, which allows students to form teams and develop cutting-edge software for local non-profit organizations. This team, paired with Butler’s Theatre Department, worked to develop a website where users can search for specific garments by size, color, and style while finding the garments’ locations in the tall hanging racks. Directors, show designers, and outside clients looking to rent costumes can access the massive inventory from anywhere. And, Royal ’20, said that while he didn’t expect sifting through costumes would help his career at first, a recent job interview proved otherwise when the recruiter was particularly interested in his EPICS work.
Whatever your major, you’ll have many opportunities to conduct real research and participate in experiential learning opportunities. Astronomy majors peer into space from our own Holcomb Observatory and from telescopes in Chile and the Canary Islands. Psychology students present their research alongside professors at national conferences in Washington, DC, and some students travel all the way to Panama to study tropical marine biology with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Never stop asking questions, because at Butler, you’ll be able to explore whatever fascinates you.

OF BUTLER STUDENTS STUDY ABROAD
AT BUTLER, WE BELIEVE IN A TRULY GLOBAL EDUCATION. It starts on campus, with courses designed to provide you with broad cultural context and historical understanding. But that’s just the beginning. We encourage you to get out of the classroom, off campus, and even out of the country—because education doesn’t stop at Butler’s borders. Check out all of the opportunities you have for global learning at Butler. Take advantage of them. The lessons you learn from venturing beyond the familiar can’t be taught in a classroom alone, and they’re lessons you’ll never forget.
Visit butler.edu/global-education to find your perfect destination. STUDY ABROAD Butler has over 200 study abroad and exchange programs in over 60 countries. Some programs focus on a certain academic area, while others can be tailored to your own interests. Choose to study for a summer term, a semester, or a full academic year.
GLOBAL ADVENTURES IN THE LIBERAL ARTS (GALA) Do you want to study abroad in more than one place? The GALA program might be perfect for you. GALA is a semester-long adventure across an entire global region, led by a Butler faculty member. You’ll also have guest professors join your group along the way to teach short classes related to whatever locale you’re in. It’s your chance to experience the global classroom, all while satisfying Core Curriculum requirements. WASHINGTON, DC AND NEW YORK CITY SEMESTER LEARNING PROGRAMS You don’t have to leave the country to expand your horizons. Spend a semester with students from other universities who are living, learning, and working in Washington, DC and New York City. You’ll earn Butler credits by taking classes in a variety of subjects and complete an internship targeted to your interests.
UNLEASH YOUR POTENTIAL
BULLDOGS MAKE THEIR PRESENCE FELT THROUGHOUT INDIANAPOLIS. Like Marissa Klingler ’21, who’s already had two internships with the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields in her first two years at Butler. The first was in public programs, planning and facilitating events; the second in volunteerism, where she developed staff training for interaction with volunteers. “Being an Arts Administration major, this experience directly overlaps with what I’m learning in my classes,” she says. In Indianapolis, you’ll be challenged to put your education into practice, create a network, and gain valuable career experience to prepare you for the road ahead. You’ll
have opportunities with a wide range of organizations based on your individual interests. Students have made an impact on children’s lives in our community’s classrooms, completed sociology research on homelessness in the city, and gained experience interning with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis Colts. And that’s just the beginning.
Whatever your dream career, Indianapolis is full of ways to help you bring it to life.
COLLEGE GRADUATES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY COMPETE FOR JOBS. But the experience you gain during your time at Butler will put you far ahead of the competition, setting you up to go anywhere your aspirations take you. Indianapolis, a city filled with business and culture, is a perfect environment to get early career experience. In fact, Indy ranks among the top 25 best places to live for young professionals by U.S. News and World Report (2020 rankings). And we can see why. We’re home to many state government offices, as well as major businesses and corporations like Eli Lilly, Roche, Salesforce, and professional sports teams. Add to that our emphasis on hands-on learning, and you’ll likely build a strong network before you even graduate. So four years from now, your biggest challenge might be deciding where to live and which job offer to take.
INVEST IN YOUR SELF COMMITTING TO A COLLEGE is a big decision, but our graduates will tell you that their time at Butler was priceless. The experiences and opportunities that you have here can’t be found at most universities. Being close to Indianapolis means that you won’t have to wait until summer break to take part in internships and make connections. Thanks to our partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, and school systems, you’ll be able to learn by doing all year long. And when you take advantage of cultural experiences like museums, live music, and shows, you’ll enhance your learning and discover your own passions. MIKAYLA EATON ’19
ALUMNI
Butler wasn’t on Mikayla Eaton’s radar until the winter of her senior year of high school when she heard about the University from a friend and decided to come for a campus tour. “As cliche as it sounds, I fell in love with Butler halfway through the tour. I could picture myself there for the next four years, and that’s when I knew I had to enroll.”
Her experiential learning opportunities didn’t stop there. Eaton also completed a sales co-op with Johnson & Johnson in Chicago during the fall semester of her senior year. While there, she helped develop and launch digital microsites for Walgreens Beauty Advisors, created sales dashboards, and analyzed data to build sales stories.
As a Marketing major with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Eaton served as the CEO for two student-run businesses through the Lacy School of Business’ First-Year Business Experience and Real Business Experience. “I had the opportunity to develop leadership, sales, and presentation skills that set me up for real-life business scenarios.”
Eaton earned a full-time job offer during her senior year with Johnson & Johnson after finishing her co-op. She now lives in Chicago and works as a sales analyst for the company’s top consumer brands: Neutrogena, Aveeno, Listerine, and Johnson’s Baby.
“I have so many memorable experiences from my time at Butler, and it really does fly by so quickly. I tried to take every opportunity I was given, and know that all of it–my experiences in the Lacy School of Business, my involvement in various student organizations, and even all-night study sessions with my best friends–all contributed to my success post-graduation.”
PROFILES
JULIAN WYLLIE ’16 Julian Wyllie came to Butler to study business and left as a journalist. “I stumbled on my life’s passion while at Butler,” he says. “I am so lucky that I was able to find that, cultivate that, almost by accident, all while still pursuing a completely different major that helped me in so many ways.” While at Butler, he served as Editor-inChief of The Butler Collegian and interned for the Indianapolis Recorder, where his social-media savvy gave the newspaper visibility it had never had before. Since graduating with a degree in Economics and Entrepreneurship, he has taken a methodical approach to his career, looking for just the right fit. He did stints
at Governing Magazine, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Politico and AARP’s print magazine, then found what he was looking for as a reporter for The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
“The primary reason I am where I am and have been able to do what I love so far is because Butler was a small enough campus to allow me to meet people who would change my life quickly,” he says. “I had people telling me to do as many things as possible, not telling me to only focus on one thing and I will forever be thankful for that.”
