inspires!

It’s not surprising that Buxton is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Peak District, with its famous Georgian and Victorian architecture providing an impressive backdrop to a rich and vibrant range of music, theatre and festivals. Add to this the stunning ornamental gardens, a wealth of independent and high street shopping opportunities, an ever expanding choice of cafes, bars and restaurants, and you begin to see why there really is something of a renaissance. Buxton is the Gateway to the Peak District, and it’s a great base for all that the National Park has to offer, but there’s so much going on in the town itself that you might find yourself hard pressed to leave.

Famous for its natural spring water and Georgian architecture, the town was founded by the Romans who called it Aquae Arnemetiae or Spa of the Goddess of the Grove. But it was the fifth Duke of Devonshire who put Buxton on the tourist map with development in 1780s - the centre piece being the Georgian Crescent, soon to reopen as a 5 Star Thermal Spa Hotel. The town’s rich history features Roman settlers, royal prisoners, outlaws and noble benefactors.

Out and About Buxton is also home to the Pavilion Gardens, 23 acres of award winning ornamental gardens including serpentine walkways, children’s play areas, lakes and a miniature railway. There is a historic Winter Gardens conservatory linking Buxton Opera House with the main complex. The building houses a café and espresso coffee bar, the Pavilion Arts Centre, Art Café, Gallery in the Gardens with a large retail area and the Tourist Information Centre. Fairs and markets are held in the Pavilion throughout the year. Dine in the café and enjoy a stroll around the gardens before maybe taking a ride on the miniature train. Follow the Heritage Trail (page 20) to find out more about these gems. Or for a trail with a difference, pick up the Buxton Real Ale Trail from the Tourist Information Centre.

Spa Hotel

Buxton Crescent Hotel & Thermal Spa

Buxton Crescent, one of the nation’s most important buildings, was created by the Fifth Duke of Devonshire with John Carr of York, one of the leading architects of the 18th century, to create a thermal water spa resort. The original layout included two hotels, six lodging houses and a majestic ballroom. Our project is to restore, update and reinterpret the building to create a luxury hotel and spa to the highest of contemporary standards in keeping with the concept born of a great Georgian partnership.

18

In this endeavour, we are working with the town, local councils, Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic England to realise a shared ambition to restore the architectural heritage alongside the Town’s well-earned reputation for culture, art, hospitality, health and well-being. The Community & Volunteer Officer for the Buxton Crescent and Spa Heritage Experience is planning a programme of events, tours, concerts and talks for the local community and visitors, which will explore the fascinating history and legacy of the building. For further details and information on the oral history project and Friends of the Crescent scheme please email lmackenzie@buxtoncrescent.com or visit www.buxtoncrescent.com

On the Trail

of Buxton’s heritage The Crescent

Take a stroll from the magnificent Georgian Crescent and Pump Room up the Slopes past the Town Hall to the highest Market Place in England. Then wind back down through the delightful Pavilion Gardens towards the Opera House, the Dome and the imposing Palace Hotel, taking in the Octagon, Pavilion and other captivating features en route. This is a truly impressive trail around the architectural gems that make Buxton what it is. Guided Heritage tours by our experienced local guides are available. See Discover Buxton’s advert on page 30. A THE CRESCENT was built by the

To the right of the Crescent is the CAVENDISH ARCADE. Originally designed as a thermal bath in 1854, it now serves as a speciality shopping arcade. It features the original plunge bath and the interior still has most of its Minton tiling and a striking glass barrel vaulted ceiling by Brian Clarke.

fifth Duke of Devonshire in 1784 to provide accommodation for visitors attracted to the town by the healthgiving Spa. Designed by John Carr to rival the Royal Crescent at Bath, it was a Georgian ‘leisure centre’ with two hotels, apartments, shops, coffee and card rooms and a magnificent Assembly Room. Work is now in progress to restore this Grade 1 listed building to its former glory.

By the Cavendish Arcade is TURNER’S MEMORIAL, erected in 1879 at a cost of £224 in memory of a local benefactor Samuel Turner. Restored in 1994.

THE PUMP ROOM opposite was built in 1894 by Henry Currey as an addition to the ‘water treatments’ of the time and in use until 1981. It will be re-opened as part of the Crescent Development. THE NATURAL BATHS, on the site of the original Roman Bath, were built between 1851 and 1854 and will form the centre piece of the Spa Pool and treatment rooms of the hotel.

Presented to the Town in 1940, the prominent ST ANN’S WELL is constantly fed with Spring Water at a temperature of 28° Centigrade and stands next to the Pump Room.

B Nearby, at the entrance to Spring Gardens, is THE CHILDREN’S WELL. Made of pink granite, it was presented to the Town in 1886.

J BUXTON OPERA HOUSE, designed by Frank Matcham, was opened in 1903 and restored in 1979. One of the finest provincial theatres, it presents a varied programme of music, drama, comedy and dance throughout the year. Opposite Buxton Opera House you will see an original ‘Penfold’ VICTORIAN POSTBOX installed in 1867 and still in use.

K ST JOHN’S CHURCH was designed by John White & Son in 1811 in a neo classical ‘Tuscan’ style. The church is not only a place of worship, but also home to the Buxton Musical Society. The designers were also responsible for the colonnaded town houses in THE SQUARE.

L Dominating the Buxton skyline is the DEVONSHIRE DOME, the University of Derby’s Buxton Campus. The Dome, with a diameter of 46 metres, built by Robert Rippon Duke in 1882 for the Royal Devonshire Hospital, sits on the original building by John Carr which housed the horses and servants of the guests of the Crescent hotels. The general public are welcome to use the many facilities, including restaurant, coffee shop, hair salon, and holistic Spa.

M Next door to the University is the imposing PALACE HOTEL. Completed in 1868 it was one of a number of grand hotels built for the numerous Spa visitors.

N The great FAN WINDOW by Joseph Paxton is all that is left of the two Fan Windows that stood at the ends of the Railway Stations.

O The fifth Duke of Devonshire built THE OLD COURT HOUSE which now houses a variety of restaurants and cafes.

P The oldest building in Buxton is part of THE OLD HALL HOTEL. It was originally built by the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury and housed the captive Mary, Queen of Scots, who visited a number of times between 1573 and 1584 to take the waters.

Q Just outside the town, is POOLE’S CAVERN, one of the seven Wonders of the Peak, extending for over 300 metres into the limestone of the hillside above the town. Visited by prehistoric cave dwellers, Celtic and Roman visitors, medieval outlaws and Elizabethan Royalty. Poole’s Cavern has a wealth of history and legend as well as spectacular stalactite formations. Conducted tours are available all year round. Together with GO APE, an aerial forest adventure through the trees of The Country Park, or a walk up to SOLOMON’S TEMPLE, there is much to do and see.

R The Victorian CIRCULAR PARK ESTATE, like other parts of Buxton, was laid out by Joseph Paxton. In the middle is the Cricket Ground, ringed by houses of varied architectural styles including a former residence of Vera Brittain and the LEE WOOD HOTEL.

A Touch of Luxury Buxton has more than its share of top quality hotels, from the historic Old Hall Hotel which housed Mary, Queen of Scots in the 1500s, to the grand Palace Hotel, built in the style of the grand spa hotels, the Lee Wood Hotel and the many others in and around the town.

your stay

Artist: Steve Mcloughlin www.stevenmcloughlin.co.uk

Buxton was built for visitors and the accommodation reflects the long history of people coming to the heart of the Peaks for a variety of reasons. As long ago as the sixteenth century, visitors came to take the waters at the ‘New Hall’, the oldest hotel in England. Now, they come to meet friends, take in a show at Buxton Opera

As you might expect there are many very comfortable Georgian and Victorian hotels in the town, as well as a healthy choice of boutique guest houses, pubs, and cosy bed and breakfast establishments, providing the perfect accommodation for every requirement.

Home from Home Self Catering apartments may be just what you need, and there are plenty of opportunities for caravan and holiday home rentals too. Check out Lime Tree Park for instance, a caravan and campsite situated in its own wooded valley yet within easy reach of the town. A stay in Buxton means you are never more than a ten minute walk from restaurants, attractions and the town centre. To find a bed that suits you and your family, contact the Tourist Information Office on 01298 25106 or visit one of the following web sites.
