The Impact Of Photography On Digital Photography

Photography is a word derived from the Greek words, photos meaning "light" and graphein meaning "to draw" (History of Photography). The word was first used by the scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839 (History of Photography and the Camera). It is a method of recording images by the action of light, or related radiation, on a sensitive material. The end of the 19th century was an important time in camera history. Shutters were incorporated into cameras, the size of the devices decreased and these moments set the stage for a new, ever–changing century of innovation in digital photography (From Shutters to DSLR). Digital camera technology was born out of the spy satellite program designed to reduce the difficulties of collecting photographic data from cameras in orbit (From Shutters to DSLR). From these early designs, digital cameras increased in resolution and decreased in size and cost until they gradually became practical for widespread consumer use. Following many years of steady development, Nikon has been contributed to incredible innovations as a leading company in digital camera industry. The first pinhole camera was invented by Alhazen, a great authority on optics in the Middle Ages who lived around 1000AD, and it was able to explain why the images were upside down (History of Photography and the Camera). The first practical process of photography was performed in 1829, Niepce used paper coated with silver chloride, succeeded in photographing the images formed in

The purpose of this report is to develop an understanding of how the digital camera industry operates in today's society as well as several factors, which influence consumer behaviour in the buying process. This report uses Canon Inc as an illustration along with the discussion of each topic.

As rules and regulations are different in each country, this understanding will help Canon to adapt their strategies in different markets.

2.2.2 Economic

Economic issues concern inflation, unemployment rate and economic growth. There are two major economic concerns; changes in income and changes in consumer spending patterns. Since economic forces can be used to forecast future sales and determine the strategies which may be used during specific economic situations. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), GDP rose 0.9% seasonally adjusted (March 2007–June 2007) and final consumption expenditure rose 0.5 % seasonally adjusted (March 2007–June 2007). This may be because the country's economy is stable. During this time, the company is expected to produce more in order to meet consumer demand. For Canon, the increase in GDP seems to affect their products in the market. However, only GDP may not be sufficient to forecast the market, and thus, marketers also need to look at other factors as well such as CPI, the country's population and changes in customer value.

With the invention the gelatin dry plate silver bromide process by Richard Leach Maddox, negatives did not have to be developed immediately (Greenspun, 2007). This was an important discovery since up until then the capture image had to be processed instantly. George Eastman invented the Kodak camera. For $22.00, an amateur could purchase a camera with enough film for 100 shots (Bellis). After use, it was sent back to the company, which then processed the film. The ad slogan read, "You press the button, we do the rest." A year later, the delicate paper film was changed to a plastic base, so that photographers could do their own processing (Bellis). Eastman's first simple camera in 1888 was a wooden, light–tight box a simple lens and shutter that was factory–filled with film. The photographer pushed a button to produce a negative (Digital Shutter Mania , 2009). Once the film was used up, the photographer mailed with the filmed still in it to the Kodak factory where the film was removed from the camera, processed, and printed. The camera was then reloaded with the film and returned. This development led to another key invention, the motion picture camera by Thomas Edison in 1891 (Bellis). Over almost 170 years, the camera has been continually developed from the big, wooden, and hard–to–use style to the most modern digital camera which everybody can

Digital photography was the reason for the graphics editing software such as Adobe Photoshop were developed, and has changed the way people take pictures. The digital camera has been in development since George Smith and Willard Boyle invented the charged–coupled device (CCD) which is an image sensor. The original intended function of the CCD was to be the new semi–conductor memory for computers. By 1975 image quality improved greatly and was able to be broadcasted over television. Since then cameras have improved eminently through the years, progressively advancing and functioning more dynamically. A digital image is a long string of 1s and 0s that represent all the pixels in an image. Just as with film cameras, the image that is recorded is visible light or flash. When the light bounces off the subject and is captured in the camera, it breaks into light patterns and is converted into a series of pixel values. The light is then converted into electric charges which are then used by the CCD or CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) to record images. There are differences between CCD and CMOS. CCD transports charges across the chip and analyzes it using Analogue–to–Digital Converter (ADC) to convert the pixel's value into digital value and converting that into binary code. CMOS uses multiple transistors at each pixel to amplify and move the charge using slightly more traditional wires. The CCD creates less noise in the image than the CMOS.

Below are some pros and cons that I have discussed to evaluate the difference between Film and Digital photography, respectively.

ADVANTAGES OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

1. You'll never have to pay for film or processing again

2. You don't have to wait to see the captured shot, you can view the shot immediately after taking the photograph.

But if you love the anticipation of developing a roll of film to see the results, watching a photograph develop on paper in front of your eyes, and the satisfaction of knowing what you created without the simplistic and robotic motions of a computer, then film photography is perfect for you. It is not like that you are a better photographer if you shoot with digital camera or film, in the end the only thing matters is the ability of the person behind the camera to capture the image. Film Vs. Digital Photography Essay

Between the use of film or digital photography, film is the more effective method when looking for originality and creativity. With the adoption of digital photography, the younger generations, as well as the older and more current photographers are becoming lazy. These groups must recognize that the art of the photograph is being jeopardized by the digital camera and the camera phone. For the current photographers as well as amateur photographers, this essay will serve as testimony to film as well as other chemical methods, and how they shouldn't be ignored, but preferred. The digital era has had a massive impact on the art world and all of its mediums, but for photography this impact has resulted in the removal of the human from the photograph making process. This intimate process is what makes it an art form. All of films imperfections and unique qualities, as well as its monetary value and scarcity are just a few factors that have made it so precious. To replace this entire process with a microchip is offensive and undermines the importance of the process that is needed to make a photograph. Anyone can take a picture but you must make a photograph, and this skill is being simplified to a digital camera. The impact of the digital era on photography has hindered the process of making a photograph; painting the art form obsolete in today's society. Photography serves many purposes and since its invention people have used it for many different reasons, but mostly for

Kodak And The First Digital Camera

Kodak is one of America's most legendary companies and long–time manufacturer and leader of American photography. In eighteen eighty–eight, George Eastman put the first simple camera into the hands of a world of consumers. Eastman developed a profitable slogan, "you press the button, we do the rest." During this era, Kodak possessed about ninety percent of the United States' photographic film market. They led way with an abundance of new products and processes to make photography simpler, more useful and more enjoyable. In nineteen seventy–five, Kodak's engineer, Steve Sassoon invented the first digital camera. Kodak saw its market share decline, as digital imaging became dominant and the threat from the new technology proved fatal. Furthermore, organizations have to adapt to the desires of the market, even if that means competing with themselves. Technology has the prospective to be disruptive of markets and companies while at the same time that it is benefiting consumers. Executives, managers and leaders should strive for entrepreneurial greatness and innovation, not to just determine preference among existing options. Marketing is not the art of selling products, as Kodak thought; smart marketing is about providing a company's customer base value satisfaction. This would allow the company to remain relevant to their customer's needs. In an age in which the consumer is in charge, the marketing strategy shall not be from the perspective of products and services alone. In two thousand thirteen, Kodak's marketing strategy proved this was not enough to make consumers want to engage. Kodak was forced to file a bankruptcy. Kodak did not fail because they missed the innovative digital age. They failed because their corporate assumed its strength was in its brand and marketing and undervalued the threat of the emerging digital imprint that was on its way.
