Introduction
GaiusCaesarAugustusGermanicus(bAD12,dAD41,emperorAD37–41)representsa turningpointintheearlyhistoryofthePrincipate.Unfortunately,hisisthemostpoorlydocumented reignoftheJulio–Claudiandynasty.Theliterarysourcesforthesefouryearsaremeager,frequently anecdotal,anduniversallyhostile.[[1]]Asaresult,notonlyaremanyoftheeventsofthereign unclear,butGaiushimselfappearsmoreasacaricaturethanarealperson,acrazedmegalomaniac giventocapriciouscrueltyandharebrainedschemesAlthoughsomeshowmorecontent [[6]]Modernscholarshaveporedovertheseincidentsandcomeupwithavarietyofexplanations: Gaiussufferedfromanillness;hewasmisunderstood;hewascorruptedbypower;or,acceptingthe ancientevidence,theyconcludethathewasmad.[[7]]However,appreciatingthenatureofthe ancientsourcesiscrucialwhenapproachingthisissue.Theirunanimoushostilityrenderstheir testimonysuspect,especiallysinceGaius'sreportedbehaviorfitsremarkablywellwiththatofthe ancienttyrant,aliterarytypeenshrinedinGreco–Romantraditioncenturiesbeforehisreign. Further,theonlyeye–witnessaccountofGaius'sbehavior,Philo'sEmbassytoGaius,offerslittle evidenceofoutrightinsanity,despitetheantagonismoftheauthor,whomGaiustreatedwiththe utmostdisrespect.Rather,hecomesacrossasaloof,arrogant,egotistical,andcuttinglywitty––but notinsane.ThebestexplanationbothforGaius'sbehaviorandthesubsequenthostilityofthe sourcesisthathewasaninexperiencedyoungmanthrustintoapositionofunlimitedpower,thetrue natureofwhichhadbeencarefullydisguisedbyitsfounder,Augustus.Gaius,however,sawthrough thedisguiseandbegantoactaccordinglyThis,coupledwithhistroubledupbringingandalmost completelackoftactledtobehaviorthatstruckhiscontemporariesas
