In 1954 Picasso pursued the theme of the painter and his model, this time with a real young woman seated before him: Sylvette David, whom he was absorbed with for three months. Picasso noticed David in Vallauris. He handed David an accurate pencil study of herself, drawn from memory over her fence which featured her high ponytail. David describes her initial meeting with Picasso as a “chance encounter”. Possession of the “secret de la jeunesse, a quality of graceful and disarming innocence powered by a vigorous optimism of spirit”, is how Picasso described the appeal of the young David. Picasso worked exhaustively, creating more than forty drawings and paintings based on David’s image, in addition to sheet metal sculptures, assemblage sculpture and ceramics. Picasso encompasses all of his oeuvre with the ‘Sylvette Series’. He also refused to paint Brigitte Bardot when she visited him during the 1956 Cannes Film Festival, dismissing her as a look-alike of his original muse.

PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME In the Fair Friday 27 October

12:00, 14:00 & 17:00 Ruby Tingle – Self in Shed
performance involving the A playing of an electronic drone folk song, the imbibing of green chroma-key milk, the mixing of oil and milk, a sigil made of golf-clubs and a projection of a silent film/communiqué detailing the mating of Bison with Golfing Oil Men to produce a brand new life form. The performance ends with the manifestation of a BI-SON-Oil-MAN, combining two (ancient and modern) forms of commodity - cattle and oil. The performance addresses the golf & gulf rituals of Oil-Men facing die-back and extinction everywhere, and proposes a new economic & multi-species creature. Courtesy of IMT Gallery.
Ruby Tingle will present a live interpretation of her latest self portrait, “Self in Shed”. Based on the definition of a mythical Sphinx as a ‘living image’, the roaming performance will form a live portrait of the artist as she transports herself and a new audible installation throughout the space. Fleeting images will be created as she situates herself briefly in poses across the fair, while audiences may choose to follow the scene as a procession to hear live renditions of supporting music.

Saturday 28 October 18:00 GESTURED Chetham’s Library
New live art from Belgium-based artist duo CMMC (Céline Mathieu and Myrthe van der Mark). Following unspoken codes and rules, drawn from ritual and religion, the durational performance alternates between moments of slow silent action like a tableauvivant and energetic moments of encounter with visitors. The work considers what can be understood, communicated and what remains (un)known.
Join Brass Art for an intimate torchlit tour of the public and hidden spaces of Chetham’s Library and medieval building. See the artists’ installation GESTURED illuminated at dusk, accompanied by a live performance from worldrenowned Theremin musician Lydia Kavina. Enjoy a smoking, red cocktail created and served by ‘The Alchemist’, in the building forever associated with 16th century scientist and alchemist John Dee.
